California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico
One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.
The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.
View Capsized vessel in a larger map
"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came," Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.
Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.
All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.
She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.
"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.
Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

A boat believed to be carrying more than 200 migrants, many of them from the Middle East, has sunk off Indonesia's main island of Java, local media reported.
Police blamed the accident on overloading, telling the official news agency Antara on Saturday that the vessel appeared to have been carrying more than twice its capacity.
So far only 33 people have been rescued, Sahrul Arifin, the head of emergency and logistics at the East Java Disaster Mitigation Centre, said.
He said strong waves wrecked the wooden boat about 90km out to sea. "Our search and rescue team have begun sweeping the water around where the accident took place but we are now sending body bags to that area."
One of the survivors, Esmat Adine, told Antara that the vessel began rocking from side to side, which triggered widespread panic.
The passengers were very tightly packed, and therefore had nowhere to go, said the 24-year-old Afghan migrant.
"That made the boat even more unstable and eventually it sank," he added.
Adine said that he and others survived by clinging on to parts of the broken vessel until they were picked up by the local fishermen.
He estimated that more than 40 children were on the ship. It was not immediately clear if any were rescued.
Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, has more than 18,000 islands and thousands of kilometres of unpatrolled coastline, making it a key transit point for smuggling migrants.
Those on board on Saturday - apparently heading to Australia - were from Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
Last month, a ship carrying about 70 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan capsized off the southern coast of Central Java; at least eight people died.

Italian cruise ship with 4,000 on board runs aground
14 Jan 2012 00:35
ROME, Jan 13 (Reuters) - A large Italian cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground on a sandbar off the coast of Italy on Friday night and passengers and crew were being evacuated to a nearby island, coastguard officials said.
They said there were no immediate reports of injuries among the some 3,200 passengers and 1,023 crew. Those on board were being evacuated by lifeboats and other ships in the area.
The ship, the 290-metre-long Costa Concordia, ran aground at about 10 p.m. (2100 GNT) near the island of Giglio off the Tuscan coast, said the officials.
A statement from the Italian coastguard said the ship had taken on water and was listing about 20 degrees but that there was no danger of it sinking.
The cruise ship company said the cause of the incident was being investigated.

But Europe also participate when the most violent push of the wobble occurs, when the Sun is high over the Pacific and Europe is in the dead of night. The globe is pushed violently north as the magnetic N Pole of Earth comes up over the horizon and is pushed away by Planet X. When this happens the globe is pushed SOUTHWARD on the opposite side of the globe, as the globe rolls as one.
What does this do to the rocky shores of Italy and any hapless ships moored or traveling just off the coast? The land is pushed UNDER the water, and the ship suddenly finds itself on rocks it though safely at a distance. Though obvious to the populace watching in amazement where the Sun is found these days, the Earth wobble is not something allowed into print. Thus the ship’s captain, desperate to explain what occurred, is at a loss and casting about to blame navigation equipment failure.

South Korean oil ship explodes; North not suspected
REPORTING FROM SEOUL -– An explosion on a fuel tanker off South Korea’s west coast Sunday killed five crewmen and left six missing, though authorities here do not suspect North Korean involvement.
Photographs showed that the blast aboard the 4,191-ton vessel Doola No. 3 broke the ship in half. The explosion took place several miles off the coast of Incheon, South Korean coast guard officials said. Five crew members aboard the ship were rescued.
Ship owners said Sunday that the explosion took place while gas was being drained from the oil tank. "The vessel usually transports diesel, but this time it carried gasoline. We are now examining whether it had any relation to the explosion," a company official told Seoul’s Yonhap news service.
Before leaving port in Incheon, the ship had unloaded 6,500 tons of gasoline.
The coast guard said it was searching for the missing crewmembers. Officials said that 11 South Korean and five Myanmar crewmen were aboard the ship.
The incident occurred far from the tense sea border with North Korea, where the communist regime is accused of torpedoing a South Korean warship in 2010, killing 46 crewmen.

Bridge Inspection Boat Capsizes in North Chelmsford
The boat was in the Merrimack River headed to Tyngsborough to do a bridge inspection.
For passers-by in North Chelmsford this morning, the scene on the Merrimack looked slightly similar the scene of the fatal cruise ship accident in Italy after a boat contracted by the state to perform a bridge inspection bridge capsized.
Officials got the call about the Harcon Corp. boat early Thursday morning as it was drifting to the waters near the North Chelmsford railroad tracks. The boat was headed out to inspect a Tyngsborough bridge.
Chelmsford Fire Department responded to the incident, which reportedly happened when the company backed the boat onto a boat ramp and a holding chain snapped. The boat floated into the water, flipped, and made its way to the waters near Brickhouse Pizza.
During bridge inspections, the boat allows inspectors to be lifted up closer to the bridge to examine its structure and determine if it is safe.
Nobody was hurt.

Freak wave causes fishing boat to capsize as crew attempts harbour entrance
Five fishermen were plucked to safety yesterday from the hull of their boat after it was capsized by a large wave off the Westcountry coast.
The Girl Rona was returning to her home port of Teignmouth when she was swamped close to the harbour entrance.
The Girl Rona lies stricken on a sandbank as rescue crews go to the aid of its five fishermen. Picture: Mark Passmore
Despite the impact, which rolled the vessel on to a well-known shingle bar, the crew were able to scramble clear and cling on to the hull of the 15-metre (49ft) vessel.
Brixham coastguards received numerous 999 calls from members of the public who saw the accident unfold.
The RNLI lifeboat from Teignmouth was alerted just after 1.30pm and was quickly at the scene, some 500 yards away.
Tony Watson, spokesman for the lifeboat station, said: "She was coming down the main channel in to the harbour and was hit by a big wave and overturned.
"She didn't sink but is resting on her side.
"They managed to climb up on top of the boat but still got a bit of a soaking.
"There was a fair sea running and it was not a simple job. Some debris is being washed off the boat and is being swept ashore – there is a whiff of diesel in the air."
The boat's crew were rushed back to the harbour where they were checked over by paramedics. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Jim Portus, chief executive of the South West Fish Producer's Organisation, said Teignmouth could be a difficult port to navigate.
"I have lived in and around Newton Abbot for 30 years and I have known a number of mariners from Teignmouth over the years," he said. "It is a tricky approach.
"A number of merchant ships have gone aground there while coming in and out of Teignmouth.
"I am certain that this was just one of those things because the shingle bank there moves, particularly in the winter months, and you don't always know the exact position of it.
"Obviously you have to keep your wits about you and hope that there hasn't been a major shift in the last 24 hours."
He added: "From a mariner's point of view the entrance and exit from any harbour is always the most tricky of operations.
"Teignmouth is not the worst entrance in the Westcountry and it is certainly not the easiest.
"We're very grateful for all concerned that there was no loss of life and hope that she's salvaged quickly and put back into service quickly."
As darkness fell last night, and the tide rose, a salvage operation was under way to free the vessel.
Teignmouth harbourmaster Captain David Platt said: "The lifeboat has gone out with the skipper and some of the crew to see if we can get the fish hold open to lighten her load.
"Having done that, we'll see if we can get a line on her and hopefully pull her upright."
Teignmouth coastguard rescue team was coordinating efforts ashore and helping to collect any debris.

At 8:00 am in South Korea, the Sun is high over the Pacific, just the location for the strong polar push of the wobble, sending the emerging magnetic N Pole of Earth back over the horizon. This is the time when the globe is shoved NORTH in the Pacific Rim, which would indeed cause the undersea landscape just 3 miles north of Jawol Island to shove under and tear apart the oil tanker. This is of course the same global push that occurred in Italy to the Contra Concordia, when the undersea landscape moved suddenly SOUTH on that side of the globe to gash its side, late in the evening. On opposite sides of the globe, on opposite sides of the clock, both victims of the same global wobble.

US Coast Guard Responds to Vessel Collision on the Caribbean Sea Mar. 12, 2012 20:30
WASHINGTON -- The Coast Guard was called to respond to a vessel collision on the Caribbean Sea on Saturday. The collision took place on Saturday morning between the 492-foot Liberia-flagged motor vessel Timor Stream and the 557-foot United Kingdom-flagged motor vessel Seagate about 60 miles northeast of Haiti's Isle de Tortue. According to reports, the Seagate had 21 crewmen on board when it started to take in water. Eighteen of them boarded life rafts while the three others remained on board to assess the damage. Out of the 18 crew members on the life rafts, 17 were rescued by the motor vessel Timor Stream, and one was rescued by a motor yacht named Battered Bull. All crew members are accounted for and there were no reports of injuries. The Seagate's captain confirmed that the vessel is stable and there is only minimal water in the engine room. However, the collision punctured one of the fuel tanks, with a potential release of about 4,000 gallons of lube oil. The Timor Stream has an unknown number of crewmen aboard, and it was confirmed that the ship only sustained minimal damage. The crew added that the ship is structurally sound and it will remain in the area until released by the Coast Guard. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Venturous arrived on scene and took on the role of on-scene commander. The Venturous is homeported in Florida, with Cmdr. Troy Hosmer as the commanding officer.

River Ferry in India Breaks in Two, Capsizes (April 30) -
A packed ferry boat capsized in remote northeastern India late Monday, leaving at least 35 people dead and 165 others feared missing, police said.
Assam state police chief J.N. Choudhury said the boat was carrying about 350 passengers and broke into two pieces. About 150 people who were travelling on the top level were rescued or swam to safety, he said.
Details were sketchy because bad weather and the remoteness of the area hampered communication.
Choudhury said the accident occurred on the Brahmaputra river near Fakiragram in west Dhubri district. The area is about 350 kilometres west of the state capital, Gauhati, and close to where the river enters Bangladesh. He said officials in that country had been contacted for help.
The area is dotted with riverside settlements and small islands, and boats are the most common mode of transport.
Mohan Lal, a senior officer with the Border Security Force, said 35 troops were at the accident site on boats and were using hand-held searchlights. He said a team of federal rescue workers was also on its way.
Lal said troops had located the upturned and broken pieces of the boat but were unable to lift them without a crane.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement expressing shock and grief at the loss of life.

Durban - Eleven German tourists were rescued by Durban lifeguards when their boat capsized off the city's popular Sun Coast Casino beach on Tuesday.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the tourists were apparently on a whale-watching trip when their boat was hit by a wave and capsized.
They sustained minor injuries and shock and were taken to the St Augustine's Hospital, in Durban.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) helped skipper Ben van Rensburg recover the boat, said spokesman Craig Lambinon.
He said the exact cause of the capsize would be investigated by the SA Maritime Safety Authority.
Initially, municipal lifeguards pulled nine of the tourists ashore. The missing two were found under the boat which, according to Lambinon and Botha, was drifting dangerously close to the shore and could have crushed the pair had it beached.
Sun Coast Casino staff rushed to the beach and gave the shocked tourists blankets and refreshments. - Sapa

JUNEAU -- A 50-foot fishing vessel capsized and sank while pulling in loaded salmon nets but another nearby boat rescued all five of the stricken vessel's crew members, the Coast Guard reports.
Lt. Ryan Erickson says the Evening Star sank early Thursday about 40 miles northwest of Sitka. The boat went down in Slocum Arm in 300 feet of water with about 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard. The fishing vessel Chickamene came to the rescue and took the Evening Star's crew to Sitka.
Erickson says the Coast Guard is working with the vessel owner to deal with pollution and salvage the boat if possible.
Inspectors saw a sheen in the area Thursday afternoon, prompting the Alaska Fish and Game Department to announce an emergency closure of an active salmon fishery.

5 missing, 28 survive as fishing boat capsizes off Agusan del Norte
BUTUAN CITY (PNA) -- Five fishermen were missing while 28 others managed to survive when a fishing boat capsized off the coastal town of Tubay and City of Cabadbaran, all in Agusan del Norte province early dawn Wednesday.
Office of the Civil Defense Chief of Technical Services and Information Amado Mazo Posas of Caraga Region said the survivors were fishermen from Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.Their fishing boat capsized as they sailed off the coast of Tubay and Cabadbaran City.
In a mobile phone interview, Posas told PNA he is now coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard in the monitoring of the search and rescue operations conducted by multi-agency teams from the Coast Guard, the PNP Maritime units, and the Cabadbaran City Search and Rescue team of the City Disaster Coordinating Council.
The OCD official said accounts from the survivors claimed that as they were sailing off the coast between Tubay and Cabadbaran City around 4 a.m. Monday morning August 1, strong winds and huge waves hit their fishing boat causing it to capsize.
The survivors claimed the incident was so sudden because when they left Buenavista town the weather was fine. Butuan City is now experiencing scorching heat of the sun.
According to Posas, the victims told him that when they are already at sea, a storm surge suddenly appeared coupled with strong winds and huge waves.
Posas said they are still in the process of identifying the those missing.
Posas said he also received reports that many fishing boats were also sailing at that time in the area where a storm surge suddenly appeared.
“We are now searching if there are other victims. We pray the initial reports that many boats capsized too were not all true,” Posas said as he appealed to families of other fishermen to report immediately to authorities if their family members went fishing and have not return yet.

U.S. Destroyer Collides With Tanker in Persian Gulf (Aug 12) -
A U.S. navy guided missile destroyer was left with a gaping hole on one side after it collided with an oil tanker early Sunday just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The collision left a breach about three by three meters in the starboard side of USS Porter. No one was injured on either vessel, the U.S. navy said in a statement.
The collision with the Panamanian-flagged and Japanese-owned bulk oil tanker M/V Otowasan happened about 1 a.m. local time. Photos released by the navy showed workers standing amid twisted metal and other debris hanging down from the hole.
The cause of the incident is under investigation, the navy said, though the collision was not "combat related." There were no reports of spills or leakages from either the USS Porter or the Otowasan, the navy said.
Navy spokesman Greg Raelson said the destroyer now is in port in Jebel Ali, Dubai. "We're just happy there were no injuries," he said. "An investigation is under way."

U.S. Navy Nuclear Submarine, Cruiser Collide Off Florida (Oct 13) -
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/10/navy-submarine-and-cru...
Two Navy vessels collided this afternoon off the coast of northeastern Florida, there were no injuries aboard the submarine and cruiser involved in the collision.
According to a Navy statement the submarine USS Montpelier (SSN 765) and the Aegis cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) collided at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET.
The statement adds that there were no injuries aboard either ship and that the submarine’s nuclear powered reactor “was unaffected by this collision.”
The incident is under investigation.
A Navy official says the two ships were participating in a “group sail” along with another vessel. The three ships were participating in an anti-submarine exercise in preparation for an upcoming deployment as part of the strike group for the aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman.
The Navy official says that at approximately 3:30 p.m. the bridge watch aboard the San Jacinto saw the submarine Montpelier rise to periscope depth about 100 to 200 yards ahead of them. The bridge ordered an “all back,” but still collided with the sub.
According to the official, the initial assessment of damage is that there was a complete depressurization of the sonar dome aboard the San Jacinto. Located below the water line of surface warships, sonar domes provide the bulbous shape to the bows of warships.
After the collision the official said the submarine surfaced and communications were established between all the ships on the scene.
The carrier USS Harry S Truman is also there, available to provide assistance.
The two ships involved in the collision are both operating under their own power.
Collisions between Navy submarines and surface warships are rare.
In March, 2009 the submarine USS Hartford suffered severe damage to its Con tower after colliding with the amphibious transport ship USS New Orleans in the Strait of Hormuz. The subsequent investigation found fault for the collision lay with the commanders aboard the submarine. Several officers and crew aboard the submarine were later disciplined for their roles.

“I saw the tugboat sideways to the current against the barge and the first thing that crossed my mind is ‘I can’t believe that tugboat is like that after what almost happened before,’” Addison said.
Addison said that within two minutes the boat was listing to one side and two people were escaping through a side window before the boat sank into the river.
It remained submerged there Wednesday evening after crews failed to lift it out of the water during the afternoon’s slack tide.
Addison said he could see the boat labor a bit, and then list to one side before he popped his cell phone out and began taking video.
He said it was a “frantic” couple of minutes as the two men jumped from the boat onto the nearby barge.
Shortly after the ship sank, a life raft popped up downriver.
“It was pretty scary. It was almost like watching a plane crash,” Addison said.
Carol Morris, spokesman with Archer Western Construction, the lead contractor on the Memorial Bridge project, said the submerged tugboat has been secured and crews led by the Coast Guard will try again to salvage it today.
The 1,200-horsepower two screw tug owned by Riverside Marine in Eliot, Maine, was on hand to assist with the bridge reconstruction project when it became pinned against a barge, capsized and sank.
