"Stretch zones primarily experience sinking ground, as the support in the rock strata is stretched thin. Thus, buildings implode and gas and water mains break." ZetaTalk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We have repeatedly stated that the Earth changes will not diminish, but will increase going into the pole shift.
This is not a lineal matter, as the closer Planet X comes to Earth, an inevitable path, the more the torque effect and the polar wobble where the N Pole of Earth is pushed away violently on a daily basis, occur. The wobble will become more pronounced, more violent. The plates are tugged back West of the Atlantic, pulled forward East of the Atlantic, during the daily rotation of the Earth. The North American continent is allowed to roll East during rotation while the S Pole is pulled West, creating the diagonal pull likely to trigger the New Madrid fault line into an adjustment, and soon. The N Pole is pushed away and allowed to bounce back, daily, as the Earth rotates, a wobble that puts stress on all fault lines when the plates are suddenly in motion, and suddenly stopped!
"As there is no other explanation for the effect on the stretch zone, lacking any earthquakes to blame, and as these stretch zone accidents will continue to emerge, and with ferocity, this is a certain clue to those on the fence, that the influence of Planet X is the cause. Or is it Global Warming?"
ZetaTalk Chat Q&A for April 13, 2013
"Sinkholes almost invariably form in areas subject to karst limestone cavern formation. Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

JUST IN: Sinkhole forces partial closure of major Gwinnett road through the weekend
April 19 2019
Heavy rain washed away part of a major Gwinnett County roadway early Friday morning, and authorities plan to keep it closed through the weekend.
A sinkhole developed on Scenic Highway, forcing the closure of a northbound right turn lane onto Henry Clower Boulevard, the Georgia Department of Transportation said in a news release.
The lane has been blocked all day.
“Georgia DOT maintenance forces are on scene to evaluate the situation, take necessary safety actions, and monitor throughout the weekend,” the agency said in the release. “Repairs will be made next week as Georgia DOT will coordinate with utility companies in order to safely repair the roadway.” continues...........

Sinkhole in high street shuts centre of Norfolk seaside resort
Sixteen-foot chasm set to force closure of road for seven days
A high street in Norfolk is set to be closed for a week after a 2ft-wide sinkhole emerged in the middle of the road.
The hole, which the fire service said was at least 16ft deep, appeared around lunchtime on Saturday in Sheringham High Street, a seaside resort north of Norwich.
Norfolk Police said officers were at the scene following “reports a hole has appeared in the road”. The force advised locals to avoid the area.
Anglian Water, which sectioned off the area, will explore the sewers beneath the hole and carry out repairs.
Andrew Munden, chair of the Sheringham Chamber of Trade, told North Norfolk News a number of businesses would be forced to close until the issue was resolved.
It comes less than a year after a supermarket in North Yorkshire was evacuated when a sinkhole opened up in an alleyway behind the building.
"This is one of the busiest weeks of the year for Sheringham being half term and could have been a disaster for the town but as a result of this camaraderie and fighting spirit the town is very much open for business."
Sinkholes mainly occur in what is known as ‘karst terrain’; areas of land where soluble bedrock (such as limestone or gypsum) can be dissolved by water.
Though most emerge gradually, ones which suddenly open up are known as cover-collapse sinkholes.
These are often created when water dissolves the bedrock underneath until only a thin layer remains between the surface and an underground opening. This thin layer can then eventually collapse.

Holy moly: City says 7.5-metre deep sinkhole may be largest ever in Regina City says it will take 3 days to fix hole
The city believes that the sinkhole, located at the intersection of Avonhurst Drive and Elphinstone Street, may be the largest ever seen locally at an estimated 7.5 metres deep.
The hole has been described alternatively as the next Capital Pointe project or the gopher hole from which the new Gainer mascot arose.
Unusual for Regina, says city
Pat Wilson, director of water, waste and environmental services with the city, said the sinkhole is expected to take three days to repair.
"Our clay soils are part of what makes this a very, very rare occurrence. We don't typically see sinkholes or large sinkholes in Regina," said Wilson.
Water typically leaks to the surface, tipping the city off to the fact there's a problem underground.
In this case, a concrete sewer trunk line likely cracked, eroding the soil, said Wilson.
"Because it's such a large line, the soil was going out through the pipe, and therefore nothing came to the surface," she said.
The crack in the 750 mm trunk could have been leading to erosion for a long time, with the recent rains finishing off that process, she speculated. One way or the other, the earth opened up cataclysmically on Monday at about 3 p.m. CST, according to Wilson, leading to a truck's front wheel sinking into the gap.
"[It must have been very frightening for the driver of the truck and we are very grateful there was no injuries," said Wilson.
A typical repair job for a sinkhole could cost $10,000 to $12,000, but with its size and complexity this sinkhole will likely cost more, she said.
In the meantime, the city is asking people to avoid the site until repairs are done and to call if other roads look like they need attention.
"If anybody sees a place that is sagging or bulging — because it could bulge if there's water building pressure up underneath— or any place that seems unusually soft, please let us know," said Wilson.
She said the city relies on these reports, along with its own checks and maintenance.
And that's the hole story.

BALTIMORE Light Rail impacted amid Downtown Baltimore street collapse Baltimore Sun |Jul 13, 2019
When an area near Howard and Pratt streets collapsed Monday, the Maryland Department of Transportation had to respond quickly to help residents and commuters who frequently travel through Baltimore via personal vehicles and public transportation.
The sinkhole has resulted in multiple partial road closures in the downtown area, and six light rail stops, between the Camden and North Avenue stops, are temporarily suspended while repairs continue.
“The safety of our riders is our first priority,” MDOT Maryland Transit Administration chief operations officer Sean Adgerson said in a news release. “We look forward to the Baltimore City Department of Public Works promptly completing these repairs, so we can restore full service quickly and minimize the impact on our riders.”
MTA put in place a “free bus bridge” for light rail passengers to minimize transportation delays. The shuttle buses pick passengers up from the North Avenue light rail station and drive through the city, closely following the light rail’s usual path through Baltimore.

Heavy rainfall causes massive sinkhole in Perth Amboy
Posted: Jul 26, 2019 6:23 PM EDT
PERTH AMBOY -
A large sinkhole developed in Perth Amboy this week after heavy rainfall.
The 20-feet hole emerged Wednesday and forced officials to close one block of Gordon Street near the Perth Amboy waterfront. Officials say that the rain, coupled with an aging brick sewer main below the street caused the ground to collapse below the asphalt.
No one was hurt and no cars were damaged by the hole.
Perth Amboy officials say that it will take several more days to fully complete repairs. The hole will need to be filled in and then the street will need to be repaved.
Repairs may be completed by Tuesday.

Sinkhole In New Lenox Closes Down City’s Busiest Road
CHICAGO (CBS)– Thousands use Gougar Road In New Lenox every day, and it’s now shut down indefinitely.
Friday’s rain event dropped 6 to 8 inches of rain in New Lenox. That amount of water in that short amount of time buckled the bottom part of a 6-foot pipe that runs right under the city’s busiest road.
It’s not the only road in need of repair.
Friday’s torrential downpour turned a small creek into a gusher and caused roadside erosion on Saturday.
Chopper 2 showed the damage from the sky.
Jeff Ronaldson’s been on the engineering beat in Will County for over 20 years.
“I have not seen anything quite like this,” he said. “The material that’s supporting the pipes, the stone around it, it washed it away, the sand, it’s like going to the beach and the water washes away the sand.”
Fourteen miles away in Wilton Township near Peotone another flooded creek created another collapse.
But in New Lenox, where roads are down and detours are up thousands, including families at nearby Lincoln Way West High School who are shuffling their daily routines around the damage.
Engineers scramble to replace the pipe, then pave and patch Gougar Road.
If materials can arrive quickly, the road can be fixed in a week. If this does not happen, it could take the better part of a month before the busiest road in New Lenox is back open to traffic.
CBS2 found the county already had plans in motion to replace the pipe that gave way this weekend. This incident forces them to move much faster on that replacement project.

Another sinkhole has opened up in Norwich
PUBLISHED: 18:57 06 November 2019
Another sinkhole has opened up on a busy city centre road.
The sinkhole has appeared on Earlham Road outside the Black Horse pub and opposite The Workshop.
According to markings around it, the sinkhole is 1.2m and was discovered earlier on Wednesday (November 6).
It has been cordoned off and is near to a set of temporary traffic lights while five months of roadworks takes place on Earlham Road.
The sinkhole is on the same road as the famous one which was 26ft deep and swallowed a double decker bus on March 3, 1988.
The picture and story of a bus stuck in the hole hit headlines worldwide.
It was the result of the collapse of a medieval chalk mine, but fortunately the drivers and passengers managed to escape unhurt.
Norwich has a long history of sinkholes.
Two people were killed on May 11, 1936, in one of the city's worst incidents, when three homes were swallowed by an 80ft-deep sinkhole on Merton Road.
More recently, a "six-metre deep cavern" caused the closure of Plumstead Road and a 20ft-deep hole was discovered in the Plantation Garden - both in 2016.
This year a sinkhole opened up on Muspole Street.

One resident, Mappiare (40 years), claimed to have initially seen smoke rising from the rice fields. After a few minutes, a roar could be heard that shocked the residents.
"At first I saw that there was smoke like burning. Then there were sounds like thunder and bulldozers. Then I approached and looked at it. But the width is still like an ordinary well, "he told reporters.
The depth of the hole was initially 50 meters with an initial diameter of about 2 meters. But this hole continues to expand to a diameter of about 15 meters.
"The land continues to fall into the water, so it widens. The ground is still falling inward, it could be wider. Because now there are already 15 meters wide, "he added.
Residents continue to arrive because they are curious about the appearance of giant holes. The police are now putting a dividing line.
Camba Maros police chief, AKP Haedar Muis, said that since the emergence of the big hole, this morning, residents continued to arrive.
"Many residents from other villages have come out of curiosity to see. Earlier, the police had already been given a line because it was feared that residents would approach and fall. That land does not stop sinking, "he said.

Spain:The sinking of land in Arcas grows and the transit of heavy vehicles is prohibited.
Dec 29, 2019
From the City Councils of Arcas and Villar de Olalla, they ask for caution and avoid traveling along the road between the two locations due to the danger of landslides
The pool that arose in Arcas after the sinking of land recorded this Friday continues to grow and already reaches a diameter close to eight meters. Its proximity to the road that connects this municipality with Villar de Olalla has led the two municipalities to issue a side asking for caution to the neighbors who transit through this area, located about two kilometers from the town center of Arcas.
Given the danger of landslides, citizens are asked to avoid circulating in this area as much as possible. In addition, the passage of vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kilos has been strictly prohibited.
It should be remembered that the subsidence of lands, possibly related to the increase in the water table of the underground currents that circulate in this area, near the Ballesteros lagoon complex, caused this Friday the collapse of land giving rise to a seven-meter dolina depth that flooded with water.

Huge sinkhole swallows bus, kills nine in China
Footage showed people at a bus stop running from the collapsing road as the vehicle — jutting into the air — sank into the ground.
Several people disappeared into the sinkhole as it spread, including what appeared to be a child. The incident also triggered an explosion inside the hole, video showed.
Sinkholes are not unknown in China, where they are often blamed on construction works and the country’s rapid pace of development.
The incident occurred at around 5:30pm on Monday in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province, the state-run broadcaster CCTV said.
Nine people were confirmed dead as of 10pm on Tuesday, according to CCTV. A search and rescue operation involving more than 1,000 people and 30 vehicles was under way, according to the official Xinhua news agency. An investigation into the cause has been opened.
Video footage published by state broadcaster CGTN showed a person being pulled from the hole by rescue workers.
The collapse left an 80-square-metre (860-square-foot) pit in the street outside a hospital. The 16 injured were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition, Xinhua added, citing a local emergency management official.
Xinhua said earlier that four people were missing, although CCTV did not specify how many remained unaccounted for as of Tuesday night.
In 2016, at least three people fell into a huge sinkhole in central Henan province, which swallowed a section of road and passersby.
An initial investigation showed the collapse might have been caused by water pipes buried under the road breaking up due to the rain.
In 2013, five people died when a 10-metre (33-foot) wide sinkhole opened up at the gates of an industrial estate in Shenzhen.
Some 1,000 emergency workers and 30 vehicles were sent to the site, the emergency management bureau in the city of Xining said. A crane was called in to lift the bus above the sinkhole so rescue workers could look for victims.
Video apparently shot by security cameras just after the accident showed the bus gradually settling into the hole while people nearby scrambled for safety.
Other video showed the bus tipped more than halfway into the chasm that had opened up at a bus stop just outside a health clinic. Light and smoke were coming to the surface, possibly as a result of the rupture of gas or electricity lines. Workers using backhoes, dump trucks and other equipment excavated earth around the collapse.
The the emergency management bureau said the bus had been raised from the collapsed 80-square-metre section into which it had fallen. The hilly city of Xining is the capital of Qinghai province, one of China’s poorest regions, sitting atop the Tibetan Plateau.
The expedited building of roads, tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure to keep China’s economy strong has often led to corner-cutting on safety, causing fatal workplace and industrial accidents. Mining had also caused instability in the ground in many areas after years of barely restricted mineral extraction.

Fortunately there were no casualties...besides a few aluminum pots that tumbled into the hole
rainfall on Friday, Jan. 31, causing a section of the restaurant’s parking lot to cave in and slide into the neighbouring excavation pit. Storm water and gas connections to the building were compromised, but there were no casualties, besides a few aluminum pots that tumbled into the hole.
A resident of the neighbourhood captured the wall's collapse on video, which can be seen below:
WorkSafe BC has issued a stop work order for the construction site at 138 East Eighth Ave., which was currently being developed into a six-storey condo complex. According to Neal Wells, communications manager for the city, a geotechnical engineer made an assessment of the site over the weekend and determined there was no risk to the surrounding buildings.
The contractor has pumped out the excess water from the pit, and work to rebuild the retaining wall is due to begin on Tuesday morning. Drivers should anticipate potential traffic delays on East Eighth as crews clean up the site. A recorded message for the Congee Noodle House says that the restaurant is closed until further notice, due to a sinkhole. The exact cause of the retaining wall collapse is yet to be determined.

Sinkhole causes detour near Laporte
A beaver dam, spring runoff and missing riprap may be contributing causes.
Mar 12th 2020
Hubbard County Highway Department workers set up barricades Monday after a sinkhole collapsed a lane of County 93 southwest of Laporte
A roughly car-sized sinkhole opened Monday on County 93 in Lakeport Township.
According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, a section of roadway collapsed at one end of a bridge a half-mile east of State Hwy. 64, approximately 2.5 miles southwest of Laporte. The collapse left a large sinkhole in a lane of traffic, making the road impassible.
Detour signs were posted overnight, and the road reopened after temporary repairs during the week.
“The issue on (County) 93 was created by the flow of the Kabekona River being able to undermine the roadway as it gained access underneath the abutment,” County Public Works Coordinator Jed Nordin said in a written statement. “The protection for the bridge on the waterside, primarily the riprap, had been moved away from the abutment, allowing the undermining to occur.”
Nordin said he could not explain how or why the riprap was removed
“A beaver dam that spanned the full width of the waterway also assisted with the problem by diverting water directly towards the abutment, creating a swirling effect that was able to pull material from beneath the roadway,” he said. “Once there was enough material removed, the strength of the pavement was not enough to stand.”
An alert area resident discovered the hole and contacted the sheriff’s office, Nordin said. Deputies, Minnesota State Troopers and the Lakeport Fire Department responded quickly to divert traffic away from the damage until the county highway personnel set up barriers to close the road for the night.
“Thanks to a great cooperative effort of the emergency crews and Hubbard County staff, there were no injuries to report,” said Nordin. “Temporary repairs have since been made so that the roadway is safely open to traffic. Paving will take place later this spring once construction crews start up for the season.”

Sinkhole closes LaFayette Hwy bridge 'indefinitely'
Apr 8, 2020
Drivers using LaFayette Highway to travel between Main Street and Highway 431 in Roanoke will have to find an alternate route for the foreseeable future.
The city of Roanoke closed LaFayette Highway Friday night at the bridge that spans the railroad tracks due to a large hole that had opened up at the seam between the asphalt pavement and the bridge on the north end.
The ground underneath the pavement eroded leaving a small chasm that eventually caused the pavement to collapse.
That left a gap of about a foot and a half between the edge of the bridge and the other end of the hole. The hole was about 3 feet wide and swallowed up the double stripe in the middle of that portion of the road.
The hole was first reported by a Roanoke resident on the resident's Facebook page Friday, and by Friday night the city had closed the road at the bridge.
The city is responsible for the repairs. ALDOT inspected the damage Monday along with city officials to determine the nature of the repairs needed.
But before work can proceed, the city will have to accept bids, open them and select a contractor. Those are all steps that must be taken during official city council meetings, a process complicated by the fact that the council has no scheduled meetings in April due to statewide coronavirus related limitations on gatherings.
That means it could be months before the road is reopened to thru traffic.
"The road is going to be closed indefinitely until we can get everyone together and start the process," said Roanoke city clerk Patricia Truitt.
The city placed temporary barricades on either end of the bridge, and by Monday afternoon those were augmented by a dump truck on one end and a backhoe on the other

Huge sinkhole appears in Walsall road
The hole opened up in Stafford Street where part of the road had been seen to be gradually sinking in recent days at the junction with Proffitt Street.
The road has been closed and Severn Trent is investigating whether a collapsed sewer caused the road to give way.
The hole is directly outside Tyre City, which had only reopened on Monday due to coronavirus and has now had to close for up to two weeks again.
Manager Sean Dickenson said he could see the ground sinking and ran into the road to stop an oncoming Transit van which had to swerve out of the way before the hole opened up.
He explained: "We opened up on Monday and noticed there was a dip in the road. The cars were bouncing.
"Day by day it's been getting worse then this morning we were sitting here and could see the road sinking.
"Then the council came and put some signs up saying slow down.
"We were watching the road dip and all of a sudden a Transit van drown down and I had to run and stop it before the road caved in.
"He had to swerve on the pavement." story continues...

More sinkholes develop alongside Mariner East construction in Chester County
Residents are asking the Public Utility Commission to shut down construction.
Sinkholes and land subsidence have developed alongside Sunoco’s Mariner East pipeline construction in West Whiteland Township, Chester County. About half a dozen sinkholes along the pipeline’s path began appearing June 13, close to active pipelines carrying natural gas liquids, a pipeline valve station and a public hiking trail, according to local officials.
The most recent subsidence occurred Friday afternoon, with growing cracks on the busy Route 30, near a sinkhole that had developed last week, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
The PUC’s Safety Division of the Bureau of Investigation & Enforcement is on-site and conducting an investigation.
“No active pipelines were exposed as a result of the subsidences and engineers from the Safety Division continue to closely monitor the situation,” according to a statement released Friday afternoon by the PUC.
The PUC says it is in contact with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and PennDot.
All of the sinkholes have been filled with cement, according to Township manager Mimi Gleason. Gleason says pipeline builder Energy Transfer, formerly known as Sunoco Logistics, continues to conduct testing and has an employee walking the area around the clock to check for any newly formed sinkholes or subsidence.
The PUC says the company is using ground penetrating radar three times a day near the roadway and the hiking trail to detect any new subsidence.
“The Township is very concerned,” said Gleason. “We’re glad the PUC is requiring additional testing to make sure the infrastructure is safe going forward.”
Gleason says Energy Transfer finished the underground drilling needed to install the pipeline, and reported the drill went through “very hard rock.”
The area around Exton is known for its limestone, or karst, geology, which is soft and porous. The state issued permits for the pipeline in 2017, despite warnings by Department of Environmental Protection employees that the area’s geology could trigger sinkholes.
Gleason says Energy Transfer also discovered a void 30 feet below the surface, which it filled with cement. It’s unclear whether that void existed before construction, or was caused by it, she said. The Township says it is now safe to use the Chester Valley Trail, which had been closed.
The company will continue to use geophysical testing and ground penetrating radar to locate any other voids or sinkholes that could impact the pipelines or nearby roadways, said Gleason.
Township resident Ginny Kerslake says she watched workers use a cement truck to fill one of the sinkholes near Lincoln Highway last Friday, July 10. After the sinkhole was filled and she planned to leave the site, she noticed another sink hole had developed by the nearby the valve station.
“All of a sudden there was a flurry of activity,” said Kerslake. “The cement truck came back and men were using wheel barrows to fill it. I lost count of how many wheel barrows of grout they put in there.”
On Monday, Kerslake noticed workers filling another nearby sinkhole.
Kerslake is a member of a local watch-dog group, Del-Chesco United for Public Safety, which has asked the Public Utility Commission to shut down the operating pipelines and halt construction while it conducts the investigation.
“They really should be shutting it down,” she said. “It’s almost as if everyone is crossing their fingers.”
It’s not the first time West Whiteland Township is dealing with sinkholes. In early 2018 sinkholes developed on Lisa Drive, leading the PUC to halt construction and the operation of the nearby Mariner East 1 pipeline. At the time the PUC said it could be “catastrophic” if the exposed pipeline leaked and led to an explosion.
Several months later, the PUC determined it was safe to re-open the pipelines, which carry natural gas liquids from the Marcellus Shale fields in western Pennsylvania to an export terminal in Delaware County.
“Sunoco continues to try to rush this export project through without regard for the potential for a disaster in the heart of Exton,” said Eric Friedman of Del-Chesco United. “These sinkholes are an invitation to a catastrophe.”
Friedman says the lives of nearby residents are in danger. The group also asked the county to to file an emergency petition with the PUC.
Natural gas liquids are more dangerous than methane. If NGL pipelines leak, the liquid turns into a gas once it is exposed to air. The gas is heavier than air and sinks to the ground, making it highly volatile and risking an explosion.
Energy Transfer did not respond to several requests for comment.

Mysterious, deep "blue hole" discovered in Gulf coast
ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — Divers and fisherman in Florida's Gulf Coast recently discovered a 425-foot "blue hole" similar to sinkholes on nearby land. The hole has been dubbed the Green Banana. It's located about 155 feet below the water's surface, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Next month, a group of researchers will begin searching the mysterious hole for signs of life. NOAA says there are many underwater sinkholes, springs and caverns scattered across Florida's Gulf continental shelf. It's not clear how many exist or where to find them, but most are believed to host booming populations of a wide variety of plants and animals.
RELATED: Mote plans groundbreaking for new aquarium
"It was more like word of mouth... these divers would go out and try to find it, and they had plenty of days where they didn't find anything and other days where, 'Eureka! There's a hole!'" Researcher Emily Hall, a staff scientist and program manager at Mote Marine Laboratory, told CBS News.
Fellow program manager at Mote and senior scientist Jay Cutler say he's discovered about 20 holes in the region since he first started looking during dives in the mid-1990s.
"You always want to go down a little bit more. Every square foot it's like, 'I wonder what's down deeper and deeper,'" Culter told CBS News. "It is exciting to get to go to someplace where you're pretty sure no one else has been."
Mote researchers were part of a team who explored a similar blue hole last year, a 350-foot deep hole known as Amberjack. The team, which included scientists with the Harbor Branch of Florida Atlantic University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the U.S. Geological Society plan to return to the Gulf Coast in August and May 2021 to study Green Banana. The 2019 mission was supported by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research. It marked the most in-depth blue hole investigations ever conducted. After deploying divers and more than 600 pounds of equipment into Amberjack Hole, the team found carbon, nutrients and microscopic life lurking inside. Researchers even found two tooth sawfish -- an endangered species.
Along with looking for new species, researchers hope next month's Green Banana mission could explain how the holes impact the global carbon cycle. Scientists want to see if there's a link between those sinkholes and Florida's groundwater. The team says that could determine whether or not to make the holes protected areas.

20-foot sinkhole sent coal ash into Lake Norman-area creek, NC investigators say
SEPTEMBER 26, 2020 07:00 AM
https://www.sunherald.com/news/health/article227303784.html
North Carolina environmental officials are investigating the release of sediment containing coal ash from a 20-foot-deep sinkhole beside a major Lake Norman-area road.
The sinkhole re-emerged Sept. 17 in a parking lot outside of a tire and auto-repair shop on N.C. 150 (West Plaza Drive) just east of Interstate 77 in Mooresville.
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has known about the sinkhole and has been monitoring it since July 2019, according to a department news release this week announcing the sinkhole reappeared.
“The parking lot is built on a documented coal ash structural fill,” officials said in the release, adding that the property owner previously repaired it in 2018 and 2019.
The sinkhole reopened Sept. 17 after the collapse of a stream culvert pipe under the fill, the department said. The pipe collapsed during heavy rains, officials said.
A department spokeswoman did not respond when The Charlotte Observer requested the owner’s name but did provide the address of the sinkhole property, 190 W. Plaza Drive.
Metal plates covered the sinkhole when an Observer reporter visited the site during a torrential rainstorm Friday. A backhoe and loader sat at the site outside a Tire Masters auto shop.
Shop manager Chris Medford told the Observer in a phone interview that he was complying with all sinkhole safety and repair measures recommended by the state, including placing the metal plates over the hole. He said he would have to consult his attorney before commenting further.
After the Sept. 17 storms, state inspectors saw sediment containing coal ash in the stream bed of an unnamed nearby tributary, according to the Department of Environmental Quality. “DEQ staff collected water quality samples from the stream and is conducting ongoing monitoring,” officials said in the release.
The department also alerted Iredell County and N.C. emergency management officials about the sinkhole, as well as N.C. Department of Transportation officials. The state DOT plans to expand N.C. 150 near the sinkhole eventually, according to the Department of Environmental Quality.
“There is no ongoing release of ash,” department spokeswoman Laura Leonard told the Observer in an email Friday. “It is important to note that what was released was a mixture of soil with dry, compacted ash. The DEQ staff estimated that around 125 cubic yards of material – soil and ash combined – was released based on the size of the sinkhole.”
Repairing the sinkhole “will take time, and DEQ staff are still evaluating the site to determine the specific nature of remediation efforts needed,” Leonard said.
She said placing the four metal plates across the sinkhole was a temporary measure by the property owner.
She said the department “is considering all next steps for the responsibility of this situation. Any decision on the issuance of penalty would be based on the facts of DEQ’s investigation.”
The state has used coal ash structural fill as part of “stable base layers for roads, bridges, airfields and large buildings across the state,” according to the Department of Environmental Quality website.
“Coal ash was widely used because it is considered stronger and easier to work with than other materials,” officials say on the site. “The availability and often low cost of coal ash made the product attractive to developers and landowners, especially during the 1980s and 1990s.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates coal ash, according to its website, because it contains such contaminants as mercury, cadmium and arsenic that, “without proper management can pollute waterways, ground water, drinking water, and the air.”

Sinkhole stretching width of Gower main road found
A sinkhole has been discovered that has left a main road in Swansea in danger of collapsing.
The hole, underneath the South Gower Road's surface, stretches across the carriageway, which has been shut because of a "risk of imminent collapse", Swansea council said.
It is shut between Penmaen and the turn-off to Oxwich.
Brian Williams, who owns a nearby business, said the hole had been developing for 40 years.
Traffic is being diverted via Cefn Bryn and the North Gower Road.
"For many years this has been on the move, I've thought it must be going under the road," Mr Williams told BBC Radio Wales.
"It's subsided many times, they kept filling it with material this time they've discovered there is a void under the road.
"Now and again motorists have felt a little bump going over it."

Thousands of fish washed onto fields after sinkhole appears in canal
Volunteers jumped into action to plug the huge leak
"Over the last two days we've found that thousands of fish were washed out across four or five fields, some as big as 20lb.
"A few hundred have been saved - some were big fish surviving in just inches of water. There were ponds that had formed in some tractor tracks that were full of about 60 fish - perch, bream, pike and all sorts.
"Yesterday I was helping get them out and put them back into the canal. There were some four fields away from the canal that were still alive and have been saved.
"I was down there Monday afternoon and yesterday and there have been hundreds of dead fish piled up for removal. There are already 21 black bin bags full of dead fish
"The scale of it is beyond comprehension."
He said that while the planks used to stop the canal flooding were still in place, the water appeared to be leaking through and he feared more fish could be washed out into the fields over the coming days as repair work takes place.
Leicestershire County Council has said its engineers are working to carry out the repairs as quickly as possible

'Rome is now Europe's sinkhole capital'
Rome has been declared the European capital of sinkholes thanks to a network of ancient Roman and medieval tunnels that have caused the city's streets to be consumed by giant chasms.
There are fears growing in Rome about the speed that the underground tunnels and quarries are causing collapses, as there are average of 100 sinkholes appearing every year, according to The Times.
Earlier this week, two parked cars, a Mercedes SUV and a Smart car, shockingly disappeared into a six-metre-deep and 20-metre-long chasm in the Torpignattara district.
The sinkhole is only the latest in a long line of 'disastrous' collapses across the capital of Italy, as an eight-foot chasm appeared in May last year, while a huge 30ft sinkhole also notably swallowed six cars back in 2018.
Sinkholes have been a common phenomenon in Rome, with over 100 openings recorded in 2019, and 175 in 2018.

Crews Working To Repair Large Sinkhole In Middle Of Upper East Side Street
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A large sinkhole opened on the Upper East Side on Thursday, causing a road to cave in. Crews have been working all day to make repairs and figure out how it happened.
You get a real sense of how large the sinkhole is when you see men inside and around it. The one-way street turned into a massive construction site after the pavement gave way at around 8:30 a.m., CBS2’s Aundrea Grymes reported.
“It looks like a horror movie. It’s quite the pit, it’s like 10 feet deep,” resident James Watson said.
Watson lives in one of two buildings on East 89th Street between York and East End avenues that lost water for a few hours as a result. The FDNY said the initial sinkhole was 8 feet by 8 feet.
Luckily, no one was injured and no cars were damaged.
“It was like very quiet street, nothing. Then you come here today and there’s a million people,” Watson said, adding the sinkhole seemingly appeared out of nowhere.
“I’ve never seen it in front of me before, it was a little surprising,” resident Vish Raman added. “And it’s actually pretty deep, because when I came in, the entire arm of the crane actually went all the way in.”

City responds to vehicle-devouring sinkholes on Saskatoon streets
Officials say the city is only liable for damages in situations where it knew or ought to have known a hazard existed.
A car encountered a sinkhole at the Preston Avenue and Adelaide Street intersection near Market Mall.
Spring is pothole season in Saskatoon, and this year’s bumper crop of chasms has already claimed a few front ends
Brendan Lemke, the city’s director of water and waste, said in an emailed statement on Tuesday that crews haven’t determined what caused the two sinkholes.
“Excavation may be necessary to determine specifics,” he wrote.
Lemke said large sinkholes are fairly uncommon. In general, he said they’re often caused when a water main break causes ground frost to melt, creating unstable conditions.
“This can evolve rather quickly” when large-diameter pipes break, Lemke added.
“We have no way of knowing whether an accumulation of water on the surface would indicate this type of scenario,” he wrote, adding that city crews arriving at the scene of a potential water main break will usually seek to isolate the rupture by manipulating valves in the area, and try to block off the area using barricades or pylons.
Lemke noted crews have no way of knowing whether an accumulation of water is a shallow puddle or hiding a crater.
“While the water remains pooled, it’s impossible to inspect visually,” he wrote.
He encouraged drivers to look out for safety barriers and avoid driving through large puddles at this time of year.
LIMITED COVERAGE FOR MOTORISTS
A city spokeswoman said drivers whose vehicles are damaged in potholes should contact their insurance providers first.
By law, the city is only liable for vehicle damages caused by potholes in situations where the city knew or ought to have known of the issue, she said.

The black hole of Chile: 82ft-wide, 650ft-deep sinkhole appears near small town
By DAVID AVERRE FOR MAILONLINE
An enormous sinkhole linked to a copper mine in northern Chile which materialised this weekend has been captured in stunning new images.
The 82-foot-wide hole mysteriously appeared on Saturday in the commune of Tierra Amarilla in the Atacama Region, close to the giant Alcaparrosa mine, and is thought to be more than 650ft deep.
Chilean media released aerial images of the strange phenomenon which took place on land operated by a Canadian Lundin Mining copper mine, about 413 miles north of the capital Santiago.
Local mayor Cristobal Zuniga on Sunday confirmed the presence of the sinkhole, which is located right on the outskirts of the town, and spoke of the fear held by nearby residents that excessive mining in the area could have catastrophic consequences.
'Yesterday [Saturday, 30th July] we received a citizen complaint regarding a sinkhole that occurred here in our community near the Alcaparrosa mine.
'We are concerned, since it is a fear that we have always had as a community, the fact we are surrounded by mining deposits and subterranean works under our community.'
here is no official confirmation yet that the sinkhole was caused by activities related to mining, but local officials say the hole is still growing.
Mayor Zuniga said: 'It is still active, it is still growing and it is something that has not previously been seen in our community.'
Atacama Region official Gerardo Tapia ordered the National Geology and Mining Service, known as Sernageomin, to establish why the sinkhole appeared.
Sernageomin's director David Montenegro later confirmed the organisation had sent specialist personnel to the area to conduct analyses.
'There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters, to the bottom,' Montenegro said. 'We haven't detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water.'
No injuries have been reported and officials continue to monitor the area, though locals are concerned that the hole, which appeared out of nowhere, is continuing to grow.
The Lundin Mining Corporation, majority owners of the mine where the sinkhole appeared, confirmed the phenomenon was detected on Saturday and said it had suspended work in the area pending Sernageomin's tests.
The corporation said in a statement: 'Upon detection, the area was immediately isolated and the relevant regulatory authorities notified.
'There has been no impact to personnel, equipment or infrastructure.
'The surficial sinkhole has remained stable since detection. Minera Ojos del Salado is conducting a technical analysis and gathering information to determine the cause of the event.'
Lundin Mining owns 80 per cent of the property and the rest is held by Japan's Sumitomo Corporation.
There have been a number of reports of sinkholes emerging in Australia in recent weeks following a period of heavy flooding.
Sinkholes often spring up after bouts of severe wet weather, because the excess water seeps into the ground and begins to erode the earth under the surface.
An Australian farm house in Richmond Lowlands, north west of Sydney, was destroyed earlier this month after it crumbled into a huge sinkhole which appeared after heavy rain and flooding along the Hawkesbury River.
It came as the Archerfield farm was recovering after being hit by a third major flood since the start of 2022.
Meanwhile in March, a major NSW highway was closed for repairs after a sinkhole swallowed huge chunks of the road, and families in the Blue Mountains were forced to evacuate after sinkholes and landslides threatened to engulf their homes following days of torrential rain.

Vast 1,000ft sinkhole that's swallowed CARS has residents fearing for lives
The sinkhole grew overnight (Image: San Antonio Fire Department)
The sink hole measures 1,000ft wide and 400ft deep after growing in just one night.
A massive sinkhole in Texas has grown overnight after residents reported hearing "gunshots" coming from the ground. The rim of the sinkhole in Daiseta, southeastern Texas, began crumbling on Sunday night despite being stable for years. After going to bed, locals woke up to find the sinkhole had gained around 150ft in both width and depth.
Neighbour Linda Hoover told KTRK: "We just never thought it would start again.
"When we bought our house a few years ago, we were under the understanding that it was stabilised."
Linda had packed her bags along with her family in case the sinkhole spread further.
Some residents have been losing sleep over fears of the sinkhole taking out their homes and possessions.
Jordana Priessler said: "I was having a lot of trouble going to sleep last night because I didn’t know if we were going to get swallowed up. My family told me it happened kind of fast before."
The hole first started growing around 15 years ago, starting at just 20ft, but this soon grew to measure 900ft across and 250ft deep.
It sent the small town into a panic after swallowing cars, oil tanks, and power lines.
Pictures showed a building on the edge of the hole.
Experts believe the hole has been caused by the erosion of a large salt dome the town is built on top of.
Fire officials did not offer much reassurance, saying they were a force of nature and there was nothing they can do about them.
Liberty County assistant fire marshal Erskin Holcomb said: "Sinkholes and extremely unpredictable. It can take a week to move one foot, or it can crumble 20ft overnight."
City officials have also said they are not planning on evacuating anyone. They said: "We are closely monitoring the situation and will work with state and local authorities to provide updates to the community as the situation progresses."

Taiwan. Taipei sinkhole grows, Nanjing West Road closed
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A sinkhole that appeared on a Taipei City street over the weekend has grown in size due to damage to an underground sewage line.
The asphalt in front of No. 311 Nanjing West Road, from Xining North Road to Huanhe North Road, in Datong District sank late at night on Saturday (July 8). The pavement was repaired by Taipei City Government Public Works Department (PWD) crews and was opened to traffic at 8 p.m. on Sunday (July 9).
However, it began to collapse again at 1 a.m. on Monday morning (July 10) and Taipei City Councilor Chen E-jun (陳怡君) arrived at the scene to assess the situation. The preliminary assessment by the PWD is that a damaged sewage pipeline close to the Tamsui River caused the sinkhole. The river is experiencing tidal fluctuations, making it difficult to stop water from entering the sewage line, reported Liberty Times.
A forward command post has been established at the scene and repair work will continue. According to the department, due to the damage to the sewage pipeline, groundwater has continued to wash away the soil beneath the street.
