Sinkhole Incidents On the Rise

"Stretch zones primarily experience sinking ground, as the support in the rock strata is stretched thin. Thus, buildings implode and gas and water mains break."  ZetaTalk

What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

"We have repeatedly stated that the Earth changes will not diminish, but will increase going into the pole shift.

This is not a lineal matter, as the closer Planet X comes to Earth, an inevitable path, the more the torque effect and the polar wobble where the N Pole of Earth is pushed away violently on a daily basis, occur. The wobble will become more pronounced, more violent. The plates are tugged back West of the Atlantic, pulled forward East of the Atlantic, during the daily rotation of the Earth. The North American continent is allowed to roll East during rotation while the S Pole is pulled West, creating the diagonal pull likely to trigger the New Madrid fault line into an adjustment, and soon. The N Pole is pushed away and allowed to bounce back, daily, as the Earth rotates, a wobble that puts stress on all fault lines when the plates are suddenly in motion, and suddenly stopped!

"As there is no other explanation for the effect on the stretch zone, lacking any earthquakes to blame, and as these stretch zone accidents will continue to emerge, and with ferocity, this is a certain clue to those on the fence, that the influence of Planet X is the cause. Or is it Global Warming?"

ZetaTalk Chat Q&A for April 13, 2013

"Sinkholes almost invariably form in areas subject to karst limestone cavern formation. Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

The Socavón sinkhole threatens to cut the Dalcahue rural road in Chiloé.

Concern and fear exists among the inhabitants of Chiloé because of the huge cavern located in a rural area of Las Compuertas, between the communes of Castro and Dalcahue, which is being monitored by the authorities to prevent their eventual collapse.

The geographic fault is 12 meters away from the public road. The Provincial Department of Roads revised it on Friday of last week to know its status.

Massive Sinkhole in Rockingham County; Officials Say It'll Take Weeks to Fix

The Bridge Department was called to Webb Road around 4:00 p.m. Thursday to block off the road because of the potential dangers of the massive sinkhole.

MADISON, N.C. -- WFMY came across a huge sinkhole on Webb Road near Madison.

The Bridge Department was called to Webb Road around 4:00 p.m. Thursday to block off the road because of the potential dangers of the massive sinkhole.

Officials with the Bridge Department said three pipes under the road that are supposed to help carry water could not handle the pressure of an abundance of water from severe weather. The pipes cracked under the pressure, and the road was swept away in flood waters.

James Tilley has lived on Webb Road since 1979, and he said he hasn't seen anything like this in decades.

“In the early 80’s the state department of engineering said they was gonna take the bridge out, which they did, and they put three pipes in which was gonna carry the water," Tilley said. "Well you can see where the pipes are now and where the road is - it didn’t work.”

The department says it expects even more of the road to collapse because it has numerous cracks in it. They say it'll take weeks to fix. A portion of Webb Road will be closed because of it. Webb road is a residential area but luckily, there are no homes within the portion that's blocked off. Still, its an inconvenience according to those who live there.

"It'll take me longer to get where I need to go," Tilley said.

A farm right across the sinkhole on Webb Road is also suffering. Moses Sharpe's family tends to the tobacco farm and he said the rain and subsequent flooding has been devastating.

“They’ve been tending this they’re whole life and to have it destroyed in the matter of a night is mind blowing,” Sharpe said.

Sharpe said he estimates they lost $100,000 dollars worth because of flooding.

"I had just dropped my wife off for her yoga class and my son was going to go for a swim in the lake but it was too chilly so we decided to throw the ball around," Rushton said. "I just heard the rush of water and didn't think too much of it and then I felt the thump so I went to investigate."

Rushton said a part of the park was already cordoned off, but the hole had gotten much wider and a lot deeper. He estimated it was 30 to 40 feet wide in one place and more than 30 feet deep.

Mexico: Laguna Chakanbakán disappears by sinkholes in one day.

    Aug 22, 2018

The affected area covers between 15 and 20 hectares where only one layer of mud remained.

Mexico.- The Chakanbakán lagoon located in the Nicolás Bravo ejido of the municipality of Othón P. Blanco in the state of Quintana Roo, disappeared in 24 hours due to the emergence of a geological fault that formed six sinkholes where the water leaked.

In addition the appearance of cracks collapsed the trees of the surroundings and caused that the fauna fled from the place, in the zone it was only a pool with some lizards, in spite of the fact that there lived five species of felines in danger of extinction like the jaguar, the ocelot , the tigrillo, the cougar and the jaguarundi.

The lagoon is located two and a half kilometers from the Caobas-Nuevo Bécar road in the middle of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and the Om Om lake natural reserve that houses the Jaguar Sanctuary where UNAM scientists work together with ejidatarios in an ecotourism project.

The ejidatarios had managed one million 200 thousand pesos to build infrastructure for camping services, a trailer park, as well as cabins, besides the lagoon was used for canoeing by the guests of the Explorean Kohunlich hotel.

The reports indicate that on Sunday the ejidatarios heard a rumble after it opened a crack from where smoke would have formed and a whirlpool formed where the water ran away

"We had never seen anything like it before, the earth was opened, we believe it was a kind of tremor," declared the ejido commissar of Laguna Om, Leopoldo Santos.

Atilano López, commissioner of the ejidal brigade said that they await the authorities' diagnosis of the causes and guard the area to prevent looting of the flora and fauna.

    Oxford sinkhole is still growing.

    Aug 24, 2018

A sinkhole in Lions Park in Oxford is continuing to get bigger.

A sinkhole at a popular Oxford park is continuing to expand.

“It looks like it has grown quite a bit since yesterday,” Oxford resident Shaun Whalen said Friday. “This thing has swallowed entire trees. They’re gone, it’s like they were chewed up.”

Representatives from the provincial Energy and Mines Department are continuing to monitor the sinkhole and stress that people should stay clear of the park.

It has been barricaded since a small sinkhole in the Lions Park got much bigger earlier this week.

Security tape surrounds the perimeter of the park and there have been officials from the town on site reminding people that it’s dangerous to enter.

Amy Tizzard, regional geologist with Energy and Mines, said the sinkhole is still a developing situation. There is no indication of when it’s going to stabilize. She reassured people that the rest of the town is on a different geological formation and will not be affected.

She wouldn’t speculate on the danger to the Lions Community Centre or businesses across the street.

“It’s still a developing situation that we are continuing to monitor very closely,” Tizzard said.

Earlier this week, Tizzard said the park is situated on top of a gypsum deposit. That deposit is limited to the area around the park and a few kilometres to the west.

She is asking anyone who notices other incidents of subsidence or the development of additional sinkholes to contact the department.

Four People Dead after Massive Sidewalk Sinkhole Swallows Them

Four people died after being swallowed by a giant sinkhole in China on Sunday, authorities said today, following an unsuccessful bid to save two missing victims.
The ground opened up without warning in a district of Dazhou city, Sichuan province, at around 2:30 p.m. local time on October 7, state media said. Footage published online, some taken from a CCTV camera in a nearby shop, revealed the moment of sudden collapse.
It showed people tumbling to the ground as the 10ft-wide sinkhole opened. In another clip, two firefighters are seen scrambling for their lives during a second collapse on Sunday.
According to Yahoo7, the first victim was located at just after midnight on Monday, roughly 10 hours after the incident occurred. The second person was discovered some nine hours later. Both individuals were later declared dead by paramedics, the first while traveling to hospital.
Responders found the first victims 6.5 meters (21 ft) below ground, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported today. Excavators later burrowed to up to 8 meters.
CNN identified the remaining two victims as a “father and his 11-year-old son.” The pair were found deceased on Tuesday afternoon after a two-day search by rescue teams.
"The biggest difficulty is that the road surface is thick with a large amount of soil," Gao Mingyue, an official at the fire service, previously told China Central Television (via CNN).
Authorities said electric wires and gas pipelines underground had slowed their efforts.
Mingyue continued: “When we arrived, the caved-in area was not big, which only covered two meters both in length and depth. But during the rescue process, it collapsed again, causing another two-meter sink. Firefighters at once evacuated while doing the rescue work.”
Dozens of firefighters were involved in the operation and authorities had evacuated hundreds of buildings, according to the SCMP. The catalyst of the collapse remained unknown Tuesday.

Imperial County officials studying the muddy spring say it has has been increasing in speed through - first 60 feet over a few months, and then 60 feet in a single day.

This natural-occurring geyser has been in existence since 1953, but recently began moving. It is releasing water and carbon dioxide.

However, was only in the last six months that it picked up enough speed that it began to pose a threat to man-made infrastructure.

Earlier this year, local officials declared it an emergency as it approached railroad tracks.

'It's a slow-moving disaster,' Alfredo Estrada, Imperial County's fire chief and emergency services coordinator, told the LA Times.

'In the past 11 years, the geyser has moved slowly however recently the rate of movement has increased and has been encroaching on the railroad,' the County of Imperial said in a statement.

The County of Imperial made the first emergency declaration on June 26 as it began moving towards the  Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) railroad tracks, SR -111, and buried utilities in the area.

It has already forced Union Pacific Railroads to move their trains to alternate tracks.

Road collapse accident occurred in Guiyang, Guizhou, where two cars were swallowed up.

    2018-11-07 03:11:47

The staff are repairing the scene of the accident.

    White Volkswagen SUV lost much.

About 10:30 a.m. yesterday, a road collapse accident happened at the junction of Jianan Road in Baiyun District, Guiyang. The collapse area was about 10 square meters and the depth was about 3 meters. The collapsed pit just engulfed an off-road vehicle and a car parked on the roadside. Fortunately, the accident did not cause casualties.

At 2:30 p.m., when the reporter arrived at the scene, the collapsed position was surrounded by a yellow isolation board. He walked into the isolation board, which was four or five meters long, three or four meters wide and two or three meters deep. The deep pit was particularly dazzling. The white off-road vehicle swallowed up by the crane was being lifted and the left body was damaged to varying degrees.

Thats a loud voice. A staff member at a nearby drugstore revealed that he was grabbing medicine for customers when a muffled sound came out of the door. At first, people thought there had been a rear-end accident. When everyone came out to look at it, they found a big hole collapsed on the roadside, and a Mazda car and a VW off-road vehicle all dropped out. Next, the two cars are stacked together.

Another witness also said that after the collapse of the road surface, they rushed to the collapse site for the first time to check. After observing and shouting, they found no one in the two cars. At this time, everyones suspense was lowered.

At the scene, the owner, Ms. Yu, said that after 10:00 a.m., they stopped by the roadside and went to a nearby hospital to see a doctor. About 20 minutes later, when they returned to their parking position, the road had collapsed. Their car just fell into a deep pit. On the top of their car, a red Mazda car. Ride on its body, the damage to the red car is not serious, the car itself is annoyed. Fortunately, there was no one in the car at that time. Ms. Yu was glad to say that the consequences would be unthinkable if the drivers cab had not been left for another 20 minutes. At 3 p.m., when both vehicles were hoisted out of the deep pit, the builder had arranged for a mixer to fill the mixing sand. For this reason, the slow lane from the Dashan cave to Mai Jia town was blocked. SCDOT: Drain pipe collapse causes large sink hole to open up at gas station off Haywood Rd.

    • Posted on Nov 16, 2018

Greenville, SC (FOX Carolina) - Greenville police said Haywood Road was closed at Airport Road heading toward Laurens Road Friday morning after an SUV-sized sinkhole opened at the entrance to the Kangaroo gas station.

Josh Rowe, a maintenance engineer with the SCDOT, said he was called out about 7:30 a.m.

Rowe said a drain pipe collapse caused the sinkhole to open. He said the dirt surrounding the pipe likely washed away, causing the pipe to collapse under the weight of the concrete surface above it.

The drain pipe was on gas station property and the DOT believes it will be the gas station's responsibility to repair.

The damage is not affected the road. Rowe said the damage starts at the sidewalk and then back onto the gas station property.

Rowe said crews inspected the road and determined it was structurally sound, but the lane closest to the hole on Haywood Road will be closed until the hole is fixed.

Massive washout on Bruce Road impacts local shipping company

Greenville, SC (FOX Carolina) - Thursday morning some employees of a local business arrived to work to discover a massive surprise.

Central Freight lines, a trucking company that services the Greenville, Spartanburg area, is currently trying to figure out what to do for their deliveries after a sinkhole opened trapping their shipping trucks in their property.

We're told that no one was hurt and employees can come and go, but because of where they park their shipping trucks, they have no way to access that part of the property to resume business as usual.

The Gannt Fire Department was on scene and confirmed to our crew that a creek that flows under a bridge on the property has had flooding issues in the past.

Because the sinkhole happened on private property, we're told it will be the businesses responsibility to fix it.

    Seawatch gets another sinkhole

Another sinkhole has formed at Sechelt’s Seawatch neighbourhood and is within throwing distance from a cluster of sinkholes that developed previously, including one in September.

The new sinkhole is located on vacant property, owned by developer Concordia, on the 6600 block of Seawatch Lane and measures approximately six metres (20 feet) wide with a cavernous interior and a depth of approximately six metres.

An excavator was on scene the morning of Dec. 27 to fill in the hole with rocks. The road remains open.

First responders have been made aware of the sinkhole, according to Rob Michael, interim emergency program coordinator for the Sunshine Coast. He was notified on Boxing Day. “At this point in time, first responders have been pre-notified in case the situation worsens,” he said.

“Currently the situation is well in hand with District of Sechelt staff, including an overnight watch in the area,” said Michael in an email. He also said Emergency Management BC and nearby residents have been alerted.

That did not include Elliott Held of Gale Avenue North, who lives downhill from the sinkhole and next to a condemned home from which residents were forced to leave after a sinkhole formed on the property. Held said he was notified on Dec. 24 by another resident, but as of Dec. 27 he had not been contacted by the District of Sechelt or the developer.

“We’re kind of on the perch,” said Held, who said he hasn’t been given any information about the current situation. “The only thing we know is that they’re filling that hole.”

The sinkholes are the product of geotechnical issues that began appearing in 2012, and that have required the district to close off sections of the road, resulted in a denial of occupancy permit for a nearby home, and forced a family to leave after their home was condemned. The debacle has also led to lawsuits against the developer and the District of Sechelt and a separate lawsuit between the district and the developer.

A sinkhole opened up in the field in Midlothian, Scotland. The area has had problems with the holes before

A huge 30ft-wide and 19ft (6metre) deep sinkhole has opened up in a field, starting a hurried investigation by the Coal Authority.

The public safety and subsidence team at the Coal Authority were alerted to the massive hole, in a field in Midlothian, Scotland, after the landowner spotted it on Friday.

Coal Authority bosses have already sealed the area off and will visit the site in the coming weeks to inspect the hole.

It is believed the sinkhole is related to an abandoned mine known as the Roslin Colliery.

James Hammond, regional project manager for the public safety and subsidence team at the Coal Authority, said: 'In December 2018, we received a report of a hole in a field in North Midlothian.

'Our regional team responded quickly to erect fencing to secure the area.

'We will be undertaking thorough investigations to determine the cause of this incident.

Sinkholes-plagued Sechelt neighbourhood on evacuation alert

'The (engineers) basically said that somebody's going to die,' says Sechelt District spokeswoman Julie Rogers.Fourteen homes in a Sechelt neighbourhood plagued by sinkholes have been placed on evacuation alert by the district.

A new engineering study received by the District of Sechelt this week concluded homes in the Seawatch neighbourhood near a massive new sinkhole are not safe to occupy.

Geotechnical instability has resulted in multiple sinkholes in the area of North Gale Avenue and Seawatch Lane, with “the potential of danger to life and health,” the warning reads.

Residents have been told to get packed and be ready to go.

“The (engineers) basically said that somebody’s going to die,” said district spokeswoman Julie Rogers.

A 25-metre deep sinkhole opened up without warning on or around Boxing Day that was “big enough to swallow a car.” After a drilling investigation, Thurber Engineering recommended that the district should not allow occupancy of the residences in the area.

“… [T]he sinkhole hazard is increasing with time and is not confined to locations where sinkholes have occurred previously,” the Thurber report reads. “There is a very high probability of at least one sinkhole collapse each year based on the recent history of the site.”

Residents said they were told Thursday evening that an order to evacuate could come as early as Friday afternoon.

Once that order is enacted, residents who leave their homes will not be allowed to return to their homes until the order is lifted, said homeowner Rod Goy.

Neighbours are concerned that once they leave, they may never be allowed to return to their homes, he said.

“We are sitting on pins and needles right now waiting for the other shoe to drop,” said Goy.

Much of the Seawatch area has been closed to vehicle traffic for months because of the subsidence of the roadbeds, leaving homeowners to walk to their homes past large concrete barriers.

The instability of the area has left homeowners with houses that cannot be sold and that could soon be uninhabitable.

One home has already been condemned after a sinkhole opened up under the foundation of the home, leaving the Storey family paying a mortgage on a home they aren’t allowed to enter.

“We moved here to live in our dream home and now we can’t even go inside,” said Ross Storey. “We are still paying a $450,000 mortgage and property taxes.”

Rod and Donna Goy’s home is not damaged, but they are surrounded by craters, failing roads and broken sewers.

Storey’s efforts to seek compensation have so far failed.

After mediation failed, the Storeys filed suit against the District of Sechelt, the developer Concordia Seawatch, 14 engineering firms, home insurer Travelers Guarantee and five real estate agents, among others.

Greg and Gerry Latham’s $1-million home is just a few metres from a sinkhole that opened up in 2012, swallowing a car.

“We had an independent appraisal done, but due to the special circumstances they said our house is now worth zero,” said Greg.

The Lathams dropped out of the lawsuit after it became clear they could not hope to recover their loss, because their house is so far undamaged.

An earlier assessment by Thurber Engineering noted that wet zones, spontaneous springs and sinkholes developed during site preparation for building in 2008.

“These issues were ongoing throughout construction and are documented in the available geotechnical information,” the report said.

Engineering studies of the area dating back to 1988 noted the potential for soil instability, but generally concluded the site could be used for dwellings.

The district has filed suit against Concordia to recover $500,000 in municipal repair costs.

In approving the development, the district entered into a covenant in 2008 with Concordia stating the “Municipality has no specific knowledge and makes no representations or warranties regarding the geotechnical adequacy of the lands for the proposed uses,” according to the District’s notice of civil claim.

Concordia has built and sold 15 homes in Seawatch and holds 14 more empty lots and one empty home that may never be occupied.
