What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

Police Officer Killed, 2 Injured After Driving into Texas Sewage Sinkhole (Dec 4)
Authorities say two passers-by rescued a driver after another vehicle went into the sinkhole. That driver and one of his rescuers were treated for minor injuries.
BCSO said in a Facebook post Monday that the deputy killed in the tragic sinkhole incident was Deputy Dora Linda (Solis) Nishihara, who had been with the agency for seven years.
The sinkhole was first reported around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8400 block of Quintana. Firefighters said a man in his 60s was driving through standing water when his vehicle entered the sinkhole.
Occupants of a car passing by saw the man stranded and stopped to help him. Firefighters said in the process of helping him, a woman was injured.
The man who entered the sinkhole and the woman who stopped to help him were both transported to Southwest General to be treated for minor injuries.
A portion of a sewer pipeline collapsed, contributing to the opening of the sinkhole.
Firefighters began to remove the two vehicles shortly after 10 a.m. Monday. Chief Hood confirmed in a press conference ahead of time that they were seeking to recover a body from one of the cars. "We know for sure that there is a body in one of those vehicles," said Chief Hood.
By the time first responders were able to make it to the scene, they realized that Nishihara's vehicle was already 90 percent submerged in the waters, and it was not likely that she would have survived.
A 100-ton crane was taken to the scene to remove both vehicles from the sinkhole Monday afternoon. The car containing Nishihara's body was removed around 1 p.m.
Gracie Rivera's home is yards from where the sinkhole formed on Quintana Road.
Rivera recounted the heroic attempts at rescue by her neighbor:
“They were coming up the street and they saw like smoke coming out (of the road) so he got (out) and ran,” she said.
“And there was a man in there with blood on his face.”
Rivera said her neighbor swam through the water but the flow was too much to reach the second driver.
Rivera’s neighbor was worried she was the second driver trapped. He called her immediately to find out.
“It could have been me, and I thank God it wasn’t,” Rivera said.

Car plunges down hole as road collapses in EU district
A water leak was to blame for the road surface giving way on Rue Stevin, a few hundred metres from the Berlaymont.
A Citroën C1 was damaged and had to be lifted out of the hole by a tow truck.
A police spokeswoman said the hole was about 10 metres long and four to five metres deep. No one was in the car at the time and there were no injuries.

A massive sinkhole at a Florida fertilizer plant that swallowed more than 200 million gallons of radioactive water is now in the process of being filled.
The toxic sinkhole that opened up at the Mosaic's New Wales plant in Mulberry, Florida, is being sealed by a concrete mixture.
Video taken from WFTS-TV's helicopter last week showed a built-up ring around the hole as crews have begun pumping the mixture inside.
The sinkhole, which measures 45 feet in diameter and is 300 feet deep, opened up beneath a pile of waste material at Mosaic, the world's largest supplier of phosphate.
A storage pond containing 215 million gallons of radioactive water sat atop the waste mineral pile and drained into the aquifer system, which supplies drinking water to millions of residents.
Aquifers are vast, underground systems of porous rocks that hold water and allow it to move through the holes within the rock.
Since then, workers and contractors have been trying to figure out the best way to stabilize and fill the hole.
The Floridan aquifer, one of the highest producing in the world, is the principal source of groundwater for most of the state, and extends into southern Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

A gaping sinkhole has opened up near Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's mansion in the affluent Sydney suburb of Point Piper.
Four homes were evacuated on Wentworth Street and part of the road and footpath caved in this morning.
Police were called to the leafy suburb after reports of a collapsed footpath about 7:00am.
Part of the street was blocked off.
Woollahra council's director of technical services Tom O'Hanlon said the site could take weeks to fix.
"We're going to make the site safe, so that our geo-tech engineer can get down into the hole and have a look at what's going on down there."
There was no damage to private property. The hole was said to be less than one kilometre from the Prime Minister's residence.
Local resident Kirsty Mirzikinian said yesterday she smelt gas and firefighters arrived in the street and started breaking away at concrete on the footpath.
"Crews stayed and worked through the night and basically we have woken up this morning and there is a massive hole on the sidewalk and on the street," Ms Mirzikinian said.
"They turned off our gas and our electricity and we can't even drive into the street.
She said her family would most likely have to stay in a hotel tonight until access is restored.
Sydney was inundated by torrential rain yesterday, with about 50mm dumped on the eastern suburbs — including Point Piper.
There were several reports of flash flooding.
"There's been a huge amount of water but at this stage we don't have a firm conclusion as to what has caused this," Woollahra Deputy Mayor Susan Wynne said.

A vast sinkhole estimated to be 15 meters wide and 20 meters deep has caused a major road collapse in the city of Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East.
The incident took place during excavation works while a building was being constructed, the local administration said on its website.
People at the nearby Seaside Regional Institute of Education Development were evacuated following the collapse. The collapsed part of the road was cordoned off by police.

“It all happened during a lunch break… We heard a loud noise and looked in the window – a concrete wall collapsed in the abyss [on the road]. Then a big sinkhole began to form on the road,” an eyewitness told TASS.
“Regional rescue services have already been deployed to the sinkhole collapse site. According to the preliminary information, the depth of the sinkhole amounts to 20 meters while its width is 15 meters,”says the report on the incident, published on the regional administration’s website.
The incident is currently under investigation, Vladimir Miklushevsky, the governor of the Primorsky Krai region said.
No one was injured in the incident, according to administration and emergency services.
Calculation errors may be among the reasons for the road collapse, the regional construction watchdog said.

Chennai, April 9: In a shocking incident, a portion of the road caved in on the city’s Anna Salai, also known as Mount Road.
A huge crater was formed in middle of the road due to sudden cave-in, which pulled along a state-run bus and also a car on Sunday.
Passengers however managed to escape and there were no injuries.
Initial reports suggest that around 35 people were inside the bus, and sustained minor injuries. Some of them were taken to the Royapettah Government Hospital.

Gaping sinkhole collapses road in Quebec town
A massive sinkhole that swallowed a main road in a small Quebec town could take three months to repair.
It’s the second such sinkhole collapse in just a week in Rawdon, about 60 kilometres north of Montreal.
The latest collapse began just after 6 a.m. Tuesday. It continued to cave in over the next three hours, opening a hole that stretches across the two-lane road and extends 20 metres deep. City crews expect the hole could grow even bigger.
No one was hurt.
“Well yikes! I was just glad there were no buses, no cars that were going over at that time,” said Susan Beaudette, who works at one of two schools near the sink hole.
The municipality had been keeping an eye on the stretch of road for three weeks, pumping away water that was accumulating nearby and regularly inspecting the pavement. The last inspection was just hours before the collapse.
“It happens sometimes. We don’t know exactly what happened, if it was the rain or the snow thaw. We don’t know,” said Bruno Guilbault, mayor of Rawdon.
Heavy rain and spring thaw has already eroded part of Highway 341 nearby and a major landslide has closed part of Highway 25 for at least two months.
“Rawdon is built mainly on sand, sand everywhere, so of course if you get any type of water movement, of course, sand doesn't stick,” said resident John St-Denis.
Residents remember a smaller crater in the same location two years ago.
Guilbault says the road was fixed on one side. He says it’s possible the repairs were not done properly.
“To me you're going to have to take something more serious now because you have two schools that are using this every single day,” said St-Denis.

The cause of a massive sinkhole that opened up and nearly swallowed a cement-carrying flatbed truck on a San Francisco street is still a mystery to investigators.
Driver Alejandro Curiel told KRON that he had stopped the truck that was carrying concrete against the curb at 7th and Townsend in the South of Market district around 6.20am Friday when it started slowly sinking on the right side.
He scrambled to climb out of the driver's side door because a tree was blocking the passenger's side. He escaped unharmed.

Kathmandu- A road has caved-in at Bagbazaar in the Capital City. The road caved-in after the wooden bridge under the road that was constructed during the Rana Regime gave up on Saturday night.
Transportation has come to a complete halt in the area since yesterday after the road caved-in. According to Traffic Police, vehicle heading to Ratnpark from Putalisadak and from Ratnpark to Putalisadak have been diverted.
It is unclear why the road caved-in, but it has been estimated that overloaded vehicles caused the old wooden bridge to collapse.
Although government officials from the concerned agencies monitored the bridge today, but no attempts have been made so far, locals have accused.
Earlier, a public road at Naxal in the Capital City had caved-in. The cave-in of the road was blamed to an under-construction hotel chain for excessive digging. Located at Bhagbati Bahal near the Nepal Police Headquarters, the sinkhole, had led to disruption of traffic for months.

The town of Palm Beach, where Mr Trump's retreat is located, tweeted a traffic alert on Monday morning about the 4ft by 4ft (1.2m) road cavity.

A construction worker is dead after a giant sinkhole swallowed him in New York.
The New York Daily News reports Edward Sinnott was working on a cesspool at a home in Huntington, Long Island, when it suddenly collapsed Wednesday afternoon. Sinnott fell in and did not resurface, officials said.
CBS reports the tragedy occurred when Antorino & Sons workers trying to fix the cesspool decided to dig a shaft with a crane, as they weren't getting proper drainage.
According to NBC4, Sinnott was directing the crane when the cave-in occurred, spreading across the homeowner's entire front yard and parts of the driveway. Witnesses said Sinnott was sucked down and instantly covered in as much as 15 feet of dirt.
A second worker reportedly fell in as well, but managed to save himself by pulling himself out of the hole by grabbing a piece of equipment.
Emergency officials from five different departments quickly responded, trying to save Sinnott with a giant vacuum, designed to suck the mud and muck out of the hole. His body was recovered six hours later.
Sinnott was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 59.
It's unclear what caused the collapse. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.

A massive sinkhole has appeared on a street in eastern China, sending a minivan and a tree tumbling in.
The incident occurred in the city of Nantong, Jiangsu Province on Saturday, after heavy rains in the region.
Video captured the event unfolding, as the minivan was sent tumbling into the ground.
The sinkhole then continued to expand, making a large tree fall in.
Chunks of pavement gave way, and a underground water pipe also burst.
There were no reports of injuries however, and the cause of the sinkhole is being investigated.

Residents concerned for their safety after sinkhole collapses in Moxham

JOHNSTOWN -- Heavy rainfall from the past two days caused heavy damage across Cambria County.
Residents are complaining about a safety hazard in the Moxham section of the city, where a sinkhole collapsed Friday night.
But some say this is nothing new.
We first brought you this story last week, after residents said they were fed up with sinkholes and potholes up and down their street.
It’s not a problem that the city didn't know about.
City Council members Charlene Stanton and Jack Williams sent a letter to city manager Arch Liston on May 30 with their concerns.
Then we aired a story on June 7 and nothing has been done.
That's why residents say this sinkhole could have been prevented.
It's not a new issue for residents on Clover Street in the Moxham section of Johnstown, who say they've been dealing with sinkholes and potholes for years.
But the heavy rain Thursday and Friday really took a toll on the road, causing one sinkhole to collapse Friday night.
David Clifton assessed the damage Saturday afternoon, but Friday night he said rats crawled out of the hole and there was water flowing underneath the street.
He said the city doesn't care.
"Nobody wants to do anything about it,” Clifton said. “And it's not like it hasn't been reported. You can see the patches and cracks all the way up and down. And it kind of just undermined underneath it and washed away all the stability and it collapsed."
Council members Charlene Stanton and Jack Williams sent a letter to the city manager with their concerns on June 30.
And Stanton said their concerns were obviously dismissed as irrelevant, as the only response was the road will be paved when sewage project happens over the next two years.
On Saturday, Stanton and Williams sent a second letter saying the city has an obligation to provide for the safety of its residents. And the lack of concern and investigation into these sinkholes is inexcusable.
She said this collapse could have been tragic.

"This is a tight little community down here,” Clifton said. “And you might have relatives that live on each side of the street. And what happens if one of these little kids decides to run across the street to see grandma or grandpa, and next thing you know they get swallowed by a sinkhole."
As a disabled veteran, Clifton said he's concerned for his safety and the safety of his grandson, who's staying with him for the summer.
"Patches are well and good, but somebody who knows what they're doing about construction and that type of thing, that's like putting a Band-Aid on a gashing wound,” Clifton said. “You gotta fix it."
Liston said crews will be out Monday to repair the sinkhole.

Liverpool UK - Massive 20ft sinkhole suddenly opens up in busy dual carriageway causing traffic chaos for thousands
One of Liverpool's busiest roads was closed off this morning after the sudden appearance of a sinkhole.
The sinkhole, measuring ten feet deep and 20 feet wide spans both lanes of Edge Lane near the junction of Beech Street in the Wavertree area.
The dual carriageway is one of the main routes in and out of the city to the M62 motorway and is used by thousands of motorists each day.
A city council spokesman described it as a 'significant carriageway collapse' and said the hole had been cordoned off with cones and traffic was being diverted.
The spokesman said: 'We have a team on site who are trying to establish the cause of the hole.
'The highways team are calling it a "significant carriageway collapse", it is a big hole.
'We don't know how long the road will be closed for but it will take some time to fill it.
'It is across both lanes going north out of the city. It doesn't seem to be affecting lanes coming in to the city.
'We are currently putting diversions in place.'
Traffic is being diverted down either Holt Road and through Kensington or Durning Road and through Wavertree, both routes will lead drivers to the motorway.

Sinkhole swallows car in downtown St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - A chaotic scene in downtown St. Louis Thursday morning after a sinkhole swallowed a car.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of 6th Street and Locust. The car’s owners were inside a nearby gym when their car went down into the sinkhole. No one was injured.

Flames and smoke as a major bubble of methane explodes causing another massive sinkhole in Russia's Yamal Peninsula

Locals say they saw flames and smoke as a major bubble of methane blasted below the surface and created another sinkhole in the Russian Arctic peninsula.
Reindeer herders in the area of Seyakh, a village on the eastern coast of the Yamal Peninsula in the morning of June 28th reported the incident to the local authorities.
They say that they from the distance saw flaring flames and a column of smoke from the area, TASS reports.
It is believed that the explosion took place place about 30-40 km from Seyakh.
Russian space authorities have been requested to localise the exact site of the incident.
The Yamal Peninsula covers a more than 700 km long area between the Gulf of Ob and the Kara Sea and is among Russia's least populated regions.
It is inhabited mostly by the indigenous reindeer herding Nenets people and a gradually increasing number of oilmen.
It is not the first explosion of its kind.
Over the last years, several major methane blasts have occured in the gas-rich peninsula.
In 2014, a major sinkhole was discovered not far from Bovanenkovo, the area which houses one of Russia's biggest natural gas fields.
That has a diameter of up to 60 meters.
There are at least ten known sinkholes in the Yamal Peninsula, as well as about 250 lakes and numerous offshore structures which indicate similar phenomena, Interfax reports.
It is not rare that the sinkholes are triggered by methane explosions with fires and smoke,
Vasily Bogoyavlensky, a research leader at the Russian Academy of Sciences, says to the news agency.
Over the last couple of years, the regional oil and gas industry has placed censors in the area which they hope will be able to tell about new and upcoming sinkholes.
The measurement instruments are now on site in Bovenenkovo, Sabetta and Kharasavey, all of them key sites for the gas industry in the area.
The methane explosions in the region could be spurred by the warmer temperatures and climate change in the Arctic.
As the permafrost melts it releases gas hydrates preserved in the ground.

Dramatic video showed the home in Land O’ Lakes, north of Tampa in Pasco County, collapsing into the hole Friday morning. It quickly engulfed one home and a boat and then consumed about 80 per cent of another home, said Kevin Guthrie, Pasco County’s assistant county administrator for public safety.
By Friday afternoon, the hole stretched up to 76 metres wide and 15 metres deep, and threatened to damage a third home, Guthrie said.
Pasco County Fire Chief Shawn Whited told reporters that no one was home when crews responded to a call about a “depression” under a boat in the backyard of a house in Lake Padgett Estates in Land O’Lakes. Within minutes, he said, “the hole opened up” and the boat fell in.
Firefighters were able to get two dogs out of the home and retrieve some belongings before the first home started collapsing into the quickly expanding hole.
Sheriff Chris Nocco said that within roughly nine metres of the sinkhole, the ground was soft underfoot and felt like it was moving.
“Walking down the street, you can see in people’s eyes the anxiety level. They’re fearful,” Nocco said.
Eleven homes were evacuated, including the two destroyed. County property records show there was a sinkhole at the property where the first house was swallowed up, and that it had been stabilised in 2014.

EL PASO, Texas - A woman and her car were swallowed by a sinkhole in west El Paso after a storm drain collapsed under the road.
The woman drove into a residential neighborhood to avoid ponding water when she ended up above the collapsing storm drain.
Paulo Cardenas, a taquero who was standing outside a neighborhood house when this happened, explained the woman was safe and unhurt when he and other neighbors pulled her out.
On Villa Hermosa and La Placita, close to Belvedere and Westwind, where the woman was standing in her car when the ground collapsed under her,. She told ABC-7 she was making a u-turn when the ground collapsed below the back part, leaving the car pointing upward. She called 911 wand was still on the phone when the part in front of her car also collapsed, leaving her car level. She then rolled down here window and climbed out, reaching up for the street.,it’s there that the taquero and other neighbors pulled here up.
Once Cardenas and neighbors pulled her out the ground and car sunk even more,they lifted her just in time.
El Paso Water explained a storm drain had collapsed under the road, creating the sinkhole.
The woman showed us scrapes on her arms, the only marks she had of the episode. She was too shaken to speak on camera, but said she was grateful for the help.

A road in Istanbul’s Üsküdar district on the Asian side of the city collapsed Monday, swallowing up a parked vehicle.
No immediate injuries were reported as a result of the caved in road.
The incident occurred at around 3:00 p.m. local time near the famous tourist hotspot Çamlıca Hill, which is known for its panoramic view of the southern part of Bosphorus Strait and the mouth of Golden Horn.
Police units cordoned off the road in question, closing it to traffic on both sides, while experts began investigating the cause of the collapse.
Media sources stated that the construction of a highway tunnel connecting the Çamlıca and Libadiye neighborhoods was being carried out beneath the collapsed road.

A seventh home has been condemned because of a Florida sinkhole that swallowed two homes in July.
The seventh house was condemned Monday morning, after two were condemned Sunday and two on Friday.
The sinkhole at Lake Padgett Estates in Tampa first opened up on July 14 and destroyed two homes when the ground caved in.
The sinkhole got bigger Friday night and is now about 260 feet wide at its widest point.

Crews brought in earth to stabilize the banks. Once the edges are stabilized, workers hope to remove debris.
Authorities hope to create a boat ramp so they can work from a barge, which will float on water in the sinkhole.
Overnight on Friday, an 80 by 10-foot-wide section of the sinkhole's banks collapsed.
The sinkhole had previously been 235 feet wide and 50 feet deep.
Cleanup was expected to begin on Friday but had to be postponed after the banks collapsed.
County spokesman Doug Tobin said officials were reluctant to say the sinkhole was growing wider without a geological survey.
He said the banks aren't considered a part of the sinkhole.
The sinkhole swallowed two homes and a boat back on July 14. No one was injured in the collapse.
Besides the two swallowed homes, residents in three other nearby homes were displaced because of the risk.
The edges of the sinkhole started caving in because there was no support for the sandy soil as it started to dry out, officials said last month.
As the water in the sinkhole recedes, the sand on the right-angled banks can't support the weight of the ground and it's giving away.
Engineers believe the solution lies in quickly getting dirt into the area to create a sloping bank that can keep the edges of the sinkhole from falling in.
Pasco County's risk manager told officials that the response to the sinkhole could cost at least $1.5million but it will be likely much more.

A 58-year-old man had to be rescued after falling into a 10-foot sinkhole while walking between parked cars in Philadelphia.
Eugene Clarke stepped off the curb between the cars in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood in the city's northwest late on Saturday night when he fell.
The sinkhole was about two feet wide and 10 feet deep.

Clarke said a car had knocked down the cones and he was going to stand them back up around the gaping hole when he fell down.
'The hole has been here about a week now,' he said. 'They could have even put a cover, one of those steel plates that you can move them but nobody would have been able to fall in that hole there.'

The road then collapses into a circle shape, with no cars being dragged down.
However, no-one appears to get out of their vehicles to escape the dangerous situation.

AN ENORMOUS sinkhole has appeared in the middle of a street as tropical storm Lidia lashes Mexico
Tropical Storm Lidia strengthened after moving into the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Thursday.
Barrelling through the resorts of Los Cabos, the storm is blowing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and moving north-northwest, the National Hurricane Centre said.
And about 1,400 people have been forced to seek refuge at storm shelters in area as heavy rains spread across a swathe of Mexico, including Mexico City where flooding briefly crossed the city’s airport.
In downtown Mexico City, a huge sinkhole of almost 30 feet in diameter opened up in the middle of the street thanks to an accumulation of water.

The collapse was just yards away from the Paseo de la Reforma, a popular tourist attraction.
The storm is expected to produce total rainfall of 6 to 12 inches across the Mexican states of Baja California Sur, Baja California, Sinaloa and the coastal section of Sonora, with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches, the NHC said.
Flash floods could also occur, with Lidia expected to bring a dangerous storm surge to Mexico’s coasts.
Lidia is expected to remain a tropical storm during the next day or so, though gradual weakening is forecast, it added.

GEORGE TOWN: A landslide-cum-sinkhole tore up a road in front of a row of newly-built luxury houses on a hillside in Tanjung Bungah early Sunday.
The landslide occurred at Persiaran Tanjung Bungah 3, and the land slipped down to the base of a towering condominium downhill.
The sheer retaining wall between the houses and the condominium tower gave way and tonnes of laterite earth pushed a steel wall outwards.
It is believed that the houses are unoccupied and no casualties were reported.

Fazenda Santa Cruz is 30 kilometers from the city. According to the owner, Diogo Tudela, the hole opened between 5 and 6 November and was discovered by a resident. "You can not imagine the size of the hole," he said.
The phenomenon had never occurred on the property before.
The farm owner hired a photographer with a drone to take the images.
They believe that the diameter is 15 or 20 meters and they could not calculate the depth.

Seven Bethlehem townhomes have been condemned by the city after a private water main broke and two sinkholes opened up in the 2400 block of Blake Court.
After an inspection by a structural engineer, the city deemed the seven homes in the Spring Garden Townhouses complex currently uninhabitable, Bethlehem Fire Department Capt. Allan Burghardt said Monday. Units numbered 2442 through 2454 are affected.
Some cracking was visible on the brick to the rear of one of the units as crews worked on two sinkholes at either end of the units.
An emergency shelter has been opened in neighboring Spring Garden Elementary School and the Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley is assisting evacuees, Burghardt said.
About 14 residents have been displaced from the condemned units, a representative of the complex's Altman Management Company said.
"We have everybody here doing whatever they can to get this remedied in a quick amount of time," the representative said.
Crews are working to repair the water main break, which was reported early Monday, and the sinkholes. The contractor has been able to isolate the broken water main and is working on a repair, according to the management company.
The break occurred on private property, explained Edward Boscola, city director of water and sewer resources. A city water crew was assisting in isolating the break and tying back the line, but the responsibility for the repair lies with the property owner and a private contractor, he explained.
Water has been cut off to all of the Spring Garden units east of North Boulevard and UGI Utilities has turned off the gas service for the condemned homes and an adjacent building of townhouses, Burghardt said. UGI is working to isolate the gas line, so service can be restored to the occupied building he said.
Officials are hopeful that water and gas service will be fully restored to all residents, except for the condemned homes, by the end of the day, Burghardt said.
Altman has a construction contractor and engineer drafting a repair plan for the units with the hopes they can begin work on Tuesday and get residents home as soon as possible, the company said.

The sudden leak flooded the underground site and caused a 30-metre-long (100-foot-long) stretch of the road to collapse at around 8:40pm local time, the city government said in a statement today on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter.
The statement said an initial leak was detected by the construction workers at around 7pm, but the workers failed to control the situation.

Updated: Apr 2, 2018 - 5:21 PMBARTOW COUNTY, Ga. - If you’re looking to enjoy the spring weather on Tanyard Creek, add some time to your drive.
A collapsed culvert near the Acworth boat ramp means the road will be closed for at least two weeks, Bartow County roads director Joe Sutton said Monday.
The hole, which spans both lanes, was reported about midnight Friday. Sutton says a metal culvert that carries water from one side to the other collapsed and the road went down with it.
The hole is about a half-mile from where Tanyard Creek Road Southeast meets Glade Road Southeast.
“It was just an old culvert that just failed,” Sutton said. "Probably age had a lot to do with it.”
He estimated the culvert was 30 years old.
Replacing the culvert requires a custom pipe to be fashioned, which is why he thinks it’ll take at least two weeks.
Neighbors say the road is a main route to I-75 for hundreds of drivers and the hole is adding a lot of extra time to their commute.
"It’s a main road. It’s really the only way for us to get to 75 without having to go all the way up, and around to get to the interstate," Kayla Harmon said.
She said it has added 25 minutes to her commute, but that's not her only concern.
"It’s just gonna be a big inconvenience. Especially for the people on Glade Road on the other side. Their fire department is on this side. So they’re gonna have to go all the way around now. It’s gonna cause a delay if there’s fire," she said.
Tanyard Creek Boat Ramp, a popular access to Allatoona Lake because of its close location to I-75, is also shut down until the road is repaired.
The county plans to fix the road in three phases. First, crews will have to clear out the mess. Then they will replace the metal pipe. Once that is done, crews can patch up the road, a process officials say will take about two weeks.

The Ngoako family are living with the danger of a sinkhole in their yard in Ngobi, North West. The sinkhole was discovered by five-year-old Otlotleng two weeks ago.
A gaping sinkhole growing wider and deeper by the day in the backyard of pensioner Dorah Ngoako is threatening the safety of her family.
The void started as a crack following heavy rains more than a week ago in Ngobi village in North West.
The sinkhole is about two metres from Ngoako’s house and her family is struggling to sleep at night as it becomes evident the ground on which their house was built is unstable.
“It started really small, more like a crack on the ground, but as time went by it was clear that the ground was caving in.
“By the third day the hole was so big we had to cover it with corrugated iron sheets as a precaution,” she said
The 68-year-old lives with her husband, Melato, 71, 36year-old daughter and their three grandchildren aged between five and 13.
They have lived in the yard for over two decades but had never seen or heard of anything like this in the village.
“It is worrying because we do not know which part of the yard will cave in next … It means the ground on which we built our house is unstable and will bury us alive.”
Ward councillor Lucky Letlhabe said he reported the sinkhole to the Moretele local municipality. “The technical team is looking into the matter for an urgent solution. The team will visit the family to further assess the situation and see what can be done to alleviate the family’s plight,” he said.
Letlhabe said the rains caused damage in the village but this was the only reported incident of a sinkhole.
The Gauteng government announced that it will cost taxpayers up to R50-million to repair a huge moving sinkhole in Laudium, Tshwane, which has resulted in the closure of parts of the R55 road and left two houses severely damaged.
According to the provincial government, 25% of Gauteng’s land is dolomitic. Tshwane municipality spokesman Lindela Mashigo said the council was attending to 44 recorded sinkholes, varying in sizes.
“Sinkholes are mainly caused by leaking wet services such as water, sewer or stormwater and surface water ponding. A higher occurrence of sinkholes occur in periods of heavy rainfall.”
Geotechnical engineering professor at the University of Pretoria, Eden Rust, said rain water was slightly acidic which chewed away dolomitic rock. “This may cause a cavity in the dolomite, which is covered by soil and if that soil wets up more than it can handle, that is when you get a sinkhole.”

Massive sinkhole opens up a SECOND time and swallows a car as the dangerous pit continues to wreak havoc on a busy road

A large sink hole has caused havoc for commuters on a busy road after it opened up for the second time.
Images of the sinkhole, caused by a burst water main, shows a white car stuck in the large crack.
The concrete around the car is darker than the rest of the street after council workers refilled the hole when the water main burst last week.

The front two wheels of the vehicle appear to be caught in the sinkhole on Sheridan Street while the rear two are safe on solid ground
The bumper of the car appears to be coming off of the vehicle.
It was towed from the site and the Queensland Ambulance Service was called to the scene, according to ABC.
They said the patient was not seriously injured and declined to be taken to hospital.
A Cairns Regional Council spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: 'A water main burst occurred at this location in the early hours of Saturday morning.
'The area around the water main was excavated, the main was isolated to prevent any further water from leaking, and the hole backfilled and compacted
'A temporary road seal was then placed over the excavated area. It appears that the compaction was not completely effective and a new void opened up under the road seal.
'The area was fully excavated again yesterday evening, refilled and compacted. A new road seal is being applied this morning and the road should be ready for use by this afternoon.
'Council is assisting the driver of the vehicle that was damaged in the road collapse.'
The sinkhole formed in the northbound lane.
Queensland Traffic has advised to make extra time for travel around the Sheridan Street and Rutherford Street intersection.

A stretch of the BR-135 between Dom Pedro and President Dutra broke out on Tuesday morning after heavy rains fell in the region.
The information was confirmed by the Federal Highway Police and the National Department of Transportation Infrastructure (DNIT).
In addition to this highway, last Tuesday (03), the volume of waters in the streams and lakes near the town of Bubasa, located between Miranda do Norte and Arari, increased considerably and began to worry those who travel on that section of highway BR 222. A strength of the waters began to erode in the stretch that collapsed a few years ago. If the volume of rain remains, the asphalt is at risk of collapsing.
The same stretch broke in February 2017. With heavy rain, part of the BR-222 caved and a large crater formed along the highway.
