Road collapses beneath overloaded truck in China

ZHANGZHOU, China, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- An overloaded truck on a road in China's Fujian Province caused the road underneath it to give way into a sinkhole that swallowed the back half of the vehicle.

Video of the scene in Zhangzhou Jan. 12 shows the truck move a short distance on the road before the street beneath its rear-end collapses.

The truck is partially swallowed into the newly-created sinkhole, which was blamed on the vehicle carrying too much weight for the street to handle.

Officials suggested muddy conditions under the road may have also contributed to the 13-foot-deep hole forming under the truck.

Massive sinkhole closes part of Highway 101 in southern Oregon - Jan 28

HARBOR, Ore. -- A portion of Highway 101 in southern Oregon is closed due to a massive sinkhole.

The hole, at least 50 feet deep, has swallowed nearly the entire road in Harbor, Oregon, located about 100 miles north of Eureka, California, according to Q13 Fox. Though they haven't declared an official cause for the sinkhole, Department of Transportation officials said the road will be closed through at least the first week of February, the report added.

The sinkhole formed on the opposite side of the road from where another hole appeared in mid-December, according to the Curry Coastal Pilot. That sinkhole measured 30 feet wide and 25 feet deep in the parking lot of Fireside Grill, the report added.

Castle told NBC News the two holes have likely combined into one big hole. "It's a monster."

Two cars that were parked on 3rd Mytischenskaya Street in the north of Moscow fell into a sinkhole that appeared in the asphalt underneath them.
One of the cars, a Hyundai, dove into the hole, whereas the other one, a BMW X5, was luckier as it managed to stay on the surface.
According to Interfax, the hole that appeared on the site was three meters deep. The sinkhole appeared on the area of 15 square meters.
Special hardware was used to remove the vehicles from the hole.

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP —It's déjà vu for an Anderson Township nursery and not in a good way.
Plants by Wolfangel is being confronted with another sinkhole, five years after a previous hole closed the business for nearly two years.

The store's owner, Barb Henry, posted on Facebook Wednesday, "So I arrive to my store this morning to an all too familiar scene...a growing sinkhole!

It immediately has tears flowing down my face as the memories of those times were extremely trying for my family."

In 2011, a sinkhole opened at the business, forcing it to close. It reopened in 2013.

"Fence posts are being pounded into the ground once again to limit access and danger! Here we go again!" the post continued.

A young family had to be saved after a gigantic sinkhole opened up beneath them and swallowed the car they were sitting in.

Video footage of the rescue shows the car lying almost vertically in the chasm, as passersby help a man and woman climb out of the driver's side door.

Three people, Edgar Orlando Bartolo Silva, 34, Marisol Mercedes Gutierrez Siccha. 31 and their two-year-old daughter escaped unhurt, Sol TV reported.

They were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A crane was later used to extract the car from the five metre wide hole.

The incident happened on Thursday in Trujillo, in northwestern Peru.

A 60-year-old Arizona farm worker was swallowed up by a massive sinkhole that opened up near a field as a woman gardening in her yard looked on in horror.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as Guadalupe Gomez Nila, a married father-of-eight from the Phoenix suburb of Queen Creek.
The 15-foot-wide sinkhole formed between 1pm and 1.30pm on Friday as the man was working in field on the outskirts of Phoenix.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective Doug Matteson said a neighbor, identified by a local TV station as Mary Jane Mack, was working in her garden nearby and saw the moment the earth gave way beneath Nila's feet and he disappeared from sight.
The law enforcement official said the freak accident occurred as Nila was walking to the back of the truck and taking off his work belt.
‘It's kind of like getting stuck by lightning,’ Matteson said.
At first, the woman thought the worker simply fell, but when she could not find him, she called the sheriff's office for help.
'He went down fast, his hands were up in the air, and he went down fast,' Mack told the station ABC15. 'I waited to see if he would get back up. He didn't.'
Firefighters rushed to the scene but could not save the 60-year-old man.

Sinkhole opens in Nordhausen, Germany (2/20/16)

Bus Swallowed by Sinkhole in China (Mar 10)

A shocking video has emerged of a bus disappearing into a sinkhole in Guiyang, south-west China's Guizhou province.

The bus was pulling into a bus station in the town when it was suddenly swallowed by a massive sinkhole in a matter of seconds at around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.

According to Chinese media, the driver and two passengers were trapped inside for around 40 minutes while rescue teams tried to free them.

The two passengers and the driver were taken to hospital for treatment. and the road administration arrived on the scene for the cleanup operation.

Shanghaiist reports that the driver sustained serious head injuries during the accident.

The bus was finally lifted up out of the sinkhole some four hours later.

A group of homeowners were forced to evacuate their homes after a massive sinkhole appeared in their street overnight.   

The enormous hole suddenly developed just yards from the front doors of three detached properties in Plains, Lanarkshire.

The crater covers a large section of road and is estimated to be 30ft wide and 10ft deep.

As a result, residents have been told to stay away from their £130,000 properties until work is carried out to assess and fix the damage. 

Although the reason behind the hole is currently unknown, locals have speculated that a former mineshaft may have collapsed following heavy rains.

The cul-de-sac had been closed off since yesterday morning and was being inspected by workers today.

Chinese Farmer Loses 25 Tons of Fish From Sinkhole (Mar 24)

A farmer lost more than 25 tons of fish last week after a sinkhole appeared in the pond where they were reared.

Locals reported that water levels in the pond were seen falling at a dramatic rate from about 4am local time on March 24.

By about 9am, the pond had almost completely drained.

All that was left was a gaping abyss with a diameter of more than 16 feet.

The farm, part of a local collective in Guiping, south China, was being run by a man identified by his surname Yang.

The incident is under investigation.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - A 80-foot wide sinkhole forced the evacuation Wednesday of several homes in a Tarpon Springs neighborhood.

Residents in the Tarpon Shores Mobile Home Park at 89 Rachel Drive are being told to seek shelter at a nearby community center, according to authorities. About seven homes have been evacuated.

The local emergency management agencies and Red Cross are helping the displaced residents until they can return home.

The sinkhole engulfed a fence, utility pole and portion of a nearby road Wednesday as it grew. It is also estimated to be roughly 35 feet deep.

City contractors were repairing a previous road collapse when the hole opened Wednesday morning. The hole affected a 30-inch sewer line, a 6-inch sewer line and 4-inch water line. Water has been turned off at the Olympic Plaza near Mango Street and U.S. 19.

Pinellas County crews expect to make a temporary fix to the sewer line Saturday. The sinkhole will have to be stabilized before a permanent fix can be made.

A motorway in the north of Bangkok, Thailand collapsed into a massive 13ft deep sinkhole on April 4, 2016.

The deep crater stretches almost over 400ft (120 metres).

The road is now closed indefinitely and inspectors have found other small cracks along the highway.

It is still unknown how the giant chiasm opened up.

But the water level at a nearby canal has fallen significantly. This could be related to the collapse.

Investigations are continuing today after a gaping 20ft hole forced a hotel to be cordoned off and the evacuation of Norwich’s Plantation Garden, which will remain closed over the weekend.

The hole, believed to be caused by the collapse of an old mining tunnel beneath the ground, opened up at the side of the Plantation Hotel, in Earlham Road, yesterday.

Fears for the structure of the hotel led to a cordon being put up around it. A large crack was visible near the main entrance and a nearby window was pushed out of alignment.

Surveyors from CNC Building Control found the cracks extended from the Grade II-listed hotel across the car park and into a medieval wall of the Plantation Garden next door.

That led to a decision to evacuate the gardens just before 2pm yesterday. Police were called to the scene and five people in the gardens, including a family of four, had to leave.

The gardens were closed, with police tape over the gates, and will remain so until at least Monday.

Roger Connah, chairman of the Plantation Garden Preservation Trust, said he had received a call from Tony Burlingham, who owns the hotel, part of the MJB string of properties, at 2pm.

The bus which went down a hole in Earlham Road in 1988, near where the latest hole has opened up.

Mr Connah said: “There is an issue of subsidence in the corner of the hotel with the cracks leading to a major wall in the Plantation Garden.

“So, the decision was quickly and sensibly taken to close the garden and they have had to shut the hotel. I don’t know how long that will be for, whether it is for a day or for a month. We’re waiting to see.

“But we’ve decided to keep the gardens closed until Monday, when we will decide what to do based on advice.”

Massive sinkhole opens up in Linthicum in Anne Arundel County

It has downed large trees, a large portion of a chain-link fence and virtually anything else in its path.

It's a 15-by-40 foot sinkhole, and Lucy Miller says it's creeping closer to her house every day.

"It's moving, and it's moving towards my property and I don't want these trees to all come down and I don't want anybody to get hurt,” Miller said. “That's my problem."

Miller and her husband, Jerry, approached the nearby Lynn Hill Apartments about the problem and were told the hole is on county land.

The county said it was the state, because it sits along a state road, and the state pointed back to the apartment complex as the owner of the land. 

"It seems that someone could go to the records bureau some place and pull out the deed to see who owns the property, but it seems to be too much of a bother for somebody or they just don't want to admit it," Jerry Miller said.

Adding to the Millers' frustration is the fact that it took years for them to get someone to fix the first sinkhole here years ago. 

This is now the second time they've had to try to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding who is responsible for the property, the runoff that created it and the risk it poses to the many children who live in the apartments above it.

"Well, they fixed it before,” Lucy said. “There was a big hole there before.  Somebody fixed it, but they didn't fix it right, because it came back again."

"Nobody knows,” Jerry Miller said. “The apartments said they didn't fix it.  The state said they didn't fix it, but somebody fixed it."

While the ownership of the massive sinkhole remains a mystery, the Millers say it could be a real tragedy if tons of dirt and soil should collapse on top of someone risking their life.

MADERA, Calif. (KCRA) —It’s something out of a movie: a roadway slowly crumbles, creating a 15 to 20 feet deep hole.

A large portion of a Madera road collapsed into the sewer line below Monday afternoon, the Madera Police Department said.

A video of the collapsing roadway on Schnoor Avenue, just north of Howard Avenue and south of 5th Street, was posted on the police department’s Facebook page.

Police said it’s unknown what caused the 12- by 15-foot area to give way, but it is "likely due to the recent rains."

The collapsed section of Schnoor Avenue is expected to be closed for an extended period of time.

Madera is located in Madera County and is about 25 miles north of Fresno.

Giant sinkhole swallows front yard in Des Moines, Iowa

This giant sinkhole appeared overnight in a front yard of a Des Moines house…

And the crater keeps on growing up. Will it swallow the whole house?

The cavity started forming at around 12:30 am and first start swallowing the edge.

But it wasn’t enough. Since then, the whole had expanded dramatically and by 7:00 a.m. it had even sucked down a tree.

According to officials, the pit is about 40 feet deep and still expanding.

As you might know there are 223 acres of coal mine shafts in the area and a map shows there is a vertical shaft near that exact home!

Basketball courts collapse at Huntington Park high school

Crews are working to repair a man-made water collection basin which has prompted the collapse of the basketball courts at Linda Esperanza Marquez High School in Huntington Park.

Los Angeles Unified School District officials say they've been monitoring the basin since it began to fail months ago.

"That pavement began to settle, we noticed in January, and it's continued to settle to the point that it's collapsed now back into the man-made hole that we created," LAUSD Chief Facility Executive Mark Hovatter said.

Hovatter says the gaping hole is what's left of a retention basin designed to collect stormwater, so it could soak into the aquifer instead of pouring out into the street. It's essentially an underground pond that's been covered over with pavement.

"Right now, we're still trying to investigate exactly which of those structure members failed. We'd like to know who's accountable for this, and then what we have to do to correct it," Hovatter said.

He says 40 of them have been installed at local schools, and that two others have experienced minor problems but nothing like this.

The crater has been a big fascination for students. It's been fenced off and off limits to people since cracks and settling were spotted at the start of the year.

As of Tuesday, the hole was about 45 by 75 feet long and about eight feet deep.

"It got all of a sudden way bigger after the weekend, and who knows what could happen after it sinks in," student Juan Sotelo said.

But LAUSD officials say the crater is done growing, and that there's no reason for anyone to be concerned.

"We know exactly where it's going to end. It's going to end where we see it today. There's no danger of this spreading over. The neighbors next door don't need to worry that their house is going to get sucked up in a sinkhole," Hovatter said.

The high school is located at 6361 Cottage Street. The fix is expected to take between two to three months, officials said.

Sinkhole causes road closure, detour set

On Monday morning, city crews discovered a large sinkhole in the 900 block of E. Herring Avenue.

The 15 to 20 feet deep sinkhole shut down the westbound lane of E. Herring between J.J. Flewellen and Dan Rowe

According to the Water Utilities Public Relations Coordinator Jonathan Echols, the collapse of a 24-inch Waco Metropolitan Regional Sewerage System sanitary sewer main may have caused the sinkhole. 

Echols said the rain could be a contributing factor to the sinkhole. Crews will wait until the rain subsides and the ground is dry to determine the cause of the sinkhole.

Westbound Herring Ave., from J.J. Flewellen Rd. to Dallas Street will remain closed until the repairs are complete, which could take, at least, three to four weeks.

A detour has been set up using Dallas St. and Faulkner Ln.

This sinkhole is the third one in that general area in the past 18 months, according to Echols. One developed on Herring Avenue and MLK Jr. Blvd in July and the other one happened a block from that location.  

The 24-inch sewer main that may have been affected this time feeds into a line that collapsed when a sinkhole developed on Herring Ave. and MLK Jr. Blvd in July.

No sewage was released to the surrounding area and water pressure is not expected to be affected, according to Echols.

Sinkholes Drain 2 More Rivers in Eastern Mexico (Apr 20)

Two rivers in the mountains of the Mexican Gulf state of Veracruz have started to dry up following the appearance of sinkholes, bringing to three the number of rivers in the region that have drained into the subsoil in less than two months, officials said.

Residents and officials said the flow of the Tliapa and Tlacuapa rivers has been reduced by half, with the water streaming into sinkholes.

The rivers start in the mountain cities of Chocaman and Calcahualco, and flow into the Seco River in Cordoba, a city in central Veracruz.

Residents of the community of Tecolotla told officials that the first sinkhole formed in a place called Puente de Piedra, where water from one of the rivers began draining into the subsoil.

A second sinkhole appeared about one kilometer (0.62 miles) downriver, beyond where the two rivers join, residents said.

“The Tliapa and Tlacuapa rivers have now reduced their flow by up to 50 percent,” Tomatlan emergency management chief Tobias Carrillo Morales said.

Cause of Mount Vernon sinkhole not yet determined, road to remain closed (4/24/16)

Engineers have not yet been able to determine what caused a partial street collapse in Mount Vernon over the weekend, and say the area will remain blocked off for an indefinite amount of time.

The sinkhole opened up in the 100 block of West Centre Street around 5 a.m. Saturday, and the street has been closed off since. Traffic is being routed north around the sinkhole.

The street has since been stabilized and water restored to a small number of customers who lost it. A six-inch water main, BGE lines and stormwater drains in the area were damaged in the collapse.

Canal Street collapses beside tunnel under Harrah's Casino

Part of the lakebound traffic lanes on Canal Street in New Orleans collapsed Friday (April 29) adjacent to a 50-year-old tunnel under Harrah's Casino. No injuries were reported as the lanes have been closed for a week.

New Orleans contracted in 1964 with Boh Brothers Construction Co. and other companies to build the 700-foot-long tunnel, designed to usher six lanes of high-speed highway traffic between Canal and Poydras streets. It was to be the subterranean section of the otherwise elevated riverfront expressway.

Residents have been evacuated from their homes after a 60ft-deep sinkhole opened up on a housing estate in London. 

The gaping hole was discovered yesterday afternoon in Plumstead, south east London, forcing 48 residents to leave their homes.

Greenwich sinkhole may have 'serious impact' on house prices (5/12/16)

Second SF Sinkhole In 36 Hours Opens Up (5/12/16)

The depression in the road, around a foot and a half across, was reported around 9 a.m. on Polk Street at Post Street, according to San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Charles Sheehan.

...The latest sinkhole appeared only 36 hours after another much larger sinkhole opened up on Mission Street at New Montgomery Tuesday evening.

...The hole is roughly nine feet deep, and a broken sewer main was found at the bottom. Repairs on the Mission Street sinkhole were expected to take until at least Thursday evening.

A group of Chinese motorists have been left stunned as they watched their cars be swallowed by a huge sinkhole in the middle of a busy road.

The vehicles were parked at the time of the incident in the congested Chinese city of Ruijin.

St. Louis County officials are trying to figure out why a lake in Lone Elk Park is drying up.

On May 14, park officials noticed water levels in the man-made lake started dropping. It is estimated as much of seven feet of water is gone.

Park employees have done some checking but are not sure why the lake is leaking. But the head of park operations thinks a sinkhole may have collapsed under the lake.

The body of water is the centerpiece of a park that features roaming elk and bison. The lake is stocked with bass and is a fishing spot.

The fish will die if the lake keeps drying up. Authorities say they may not know the true source of the problem until the lake is completely dry.

VERNALIS (CBS13) – A sinkhole along Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County is diverting traffic.

The sinkhole is just south of Highway 33, Caltrans says.

Northbound I-5 at Highway 132 will be closed for at least two to three days due to the sinkhole. A detour has been set up at Highway 33.

A Caltrans maintenance crew found the small hole on Tuesday morning, but that hole wouldn’t stay small for long. Caltrans says the hole was 15 feet and growing and crews will have to tear apart the roadway to find the source of the sinkhole.

How deep they will have to dig will be debatable—potentially up to 20 feet.

An irrigation pipe underneath could potentially have played a role, but crews are still investigating.

The road is expected to be closed through Thursday.

Massive Sinkhole in Downtown Ottawa Causes Gas Leaks, Evacuations - June 8

Traffic came to a standstill in downtown Ottawa Wednesday morning after a sinkhole left a gaping hole in one of its major thoroughfares.

The hole stretches almost the entire width of Rideau St., across from the busy Rideau Centre shopping mall, at the corner of Sussex Dr.

The cave-in spread from one side of the street to the next, causing a parked black van to fall into the hole at about 11:30 a.m., said Andre da Costa, who was nearby.

“There was this puff of . . . I’m not sure what it was . . . maybe it was water, maybe it was dust in the sinkhole,” he said. “Shortly after that puff of dirt, you could see the car just tilting and then (it) just toppled into the sinkhole taking a light stand with it.”

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said the cause of the collapse is not known, but that the excavation for the LRT was located “substantially below” the water main.

The street is likely to be shut down for the next few days as investigators determine the cause of the damage and begin repairs, said Chief Anthony Di Monte, with Ottawa Paramedic Services.

Nearby buildings were evacuated due to concerns about a gas leak, the city said on Twitter. Hodder had to make his way out onto the roof of the Rideau Centre, which is located some five storeys below his office.

“The smell of gas was overwhelming,” he said.

Hodder and his colleagues navigated their way through the darkened shopping mall, which was lit by emergency lights and the sunlight that poured in through skylights.

The onset of monsoon rains in Phnom Penh this week opened a sinkhole on a busy road close to the iconic Olympic Stadium.

Residents living close to a large skyscraper project next to the sinkhole have become concerned.

Hout Hang, 60, who saw the road collapse during a rainstorm on Wednesday, said he had watched in amazement as the tarmac gave way.

“It just suddenly happened, and three cars fell into the sinkhole,” he said. “Luckily the cars were just parked there, otherwise, if people were driving, it would be dangerous and could have killed people,” he said.

“I think the construction is too close to the road and that made it collapse,” he added, referring to a nearby construction site.

Prak Heng, 49, a moto-taxi driver, said the collapse had followed hours of torrential rainfall.

“We all went to see what had happened and search for the cars’ owners.”

Se Veoun, 60, a local resident, said the community was now scared that the same could happen on their property.

“Before this huge construction project started, nothing like this happened. If it rains again, sinkholes might happen again, unless the construction is finished.”

The project, which will include luxury homes and condominiums alongside a shopping complex, is being built by the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation, directed by tycoon Pung Kheav Se.

In late 2014, a woman was killed while driving by the project when construction materials fell from the site.

A construction worker at the site this week, who declined to be named for fear of losing his job, said he was also worried about the collapse, but did not think the construction was to blame.

City Hall spokesman Mean Chanyada said on Thursday the authority will “urge the construction company to pay close attention to technical standards.”

An OCIC representative was quoted by local media denying a link between the development and the sinkhole.

But Sok Kin, vice president of the Building and Woodworkers Trade Union Federation of Cambodia, said the low quality of the road combined with how close the construction was to the area of collapse were to blame.

“The investor is the one who benefits, yet the people are the victims,” he said.

Scientists have issued a grave warning to a small Texas community home to two growing sinkholes. 

Geologists at Southern Methodist University say the two sinkholes in Wink and neighboring Kermit, Texas are growing more unstable, and could spark more sinkholes or join to create one massive hole. 

This will prove devastating to the local community, which has a combined population of almost 7,000.

The first sinkhole in Wink, Texas is the smaller of the two but it is also the most unstable, and is growing at a faster rate 

SMU researchers Zhong Lu and Jin-Woo Kim recently published their sober warning in a recent article in the journal Remote Sensing. 

'This area is heavily populated with oil and gas production equipment and installations, hazardous liquid pipelines, as well as two communities. The intrusion of freshwater to underground can dissolve the interbedded salt layers and accelerate the sinkhole collapse,' co-author Kim said in a press release. 

'A collapse could be catastrophic. Following our study, we are collecting more high-resolution satellite data over the sinkholes and neighboring regions to monitor further development and collapse.' 

Lu and Kim discovered that the two holes were growing more unstable by using satellite images that measures depressions in the earth's crust.

The Atoyac river disappears overnight in Mexico

Within the last 3 months or so, newspapers have started reporting increasingly about rivers and lakes that mysteriously and suddenly disappear around the world. Here a compilation of the most baffling incidents. 

Let's start this compilation with the Atoyac River, which disappeared overnight drained by a giant 30 meters by 20 meters fissure in the riverbed. The large sink hole cut the water supply to more than 10,000 families for a few days. 

One month later, in April 2016, two other rivers flowing through the exact same mountainous region of the eastern state of Veracruz, Mexico also began to dry up due to the formation of sinkholes.

Underground garage partially collapses beneath garbage truck in Avalon

AVALON, Pa. —

A garbage truck became stuck in Avalon Saturday when the surface beneath it crumbled, leaving behind a gaping hole.

The incident happened at an apartment complex near the intersection of California Avenue and North Chestnut Street.

Channel 11 News learned that the hole formed due to a partial collapse of an underground garage. Photos from inside the garage show the truck’s rear wheels coming through the roof.

Crews at the scene said the garbage truck was pulling into a parking area where dumpsters are located when the collapse occurred.

Channel 11 News was told that one man fell into the hole, but was treated at the scene and is OK.

Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated while crews worked to remove the truck and assess the stability of the building.

Darlington road collapse closes Pearl Street

DARLINGTON, S.C. (WBTW)- Around noon Wednesday, a firetruck triggered a sinkhole on Pearl Street at the Syracuse Street intersection near Subway.

A section of the street has been blocked off along with some of the side streets leading to Pearl Street. Darlington Police say that traffic is being detoured to Washington and Broad Street.

Officers say a sewer line busted and the resulting water collapsed part of the road and they think the road could be open tomorrow.

According to the Darlington Fire Department Facebook page, crews from the DOT and the city are working to get the situation under control and make repairs.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows the aftermath of heavy flooding which left a huge sinkhole on a road in the village of Baturovo in the Altai Region. No injuries were reported. 

According to EMERCOM, 82 emergency service officers as well as 37 units of equipment are currently involved in the recovery works. 

Giant Sinkhole Swallows 4 People in China, 2 Still Missing (Aug 2)

Two people were rescued from a giant sinkhole that opened up in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, while two more remain missing.

What started out as a crack in the road on Monday night, opened up into a small hole shortly after, before swallowing up a grass verge beside it and then pulling in some of the surrounding pavements.

A number of pedestrians stood beside the hole to take photos of it as it expanded. Four were suddenly dragged in, along with three vehicles.

A 36-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were pulled from the now 600-square-meter sinkhole. Video footage of the rescue shows a group of men scrambling to help the man out of the dark depths of the hole using a rope.

Emergency services have been unable to find the two remaining pedestrians, one of whom is understood to be a child, but rescue efforts are continuing Tuesday.

There are a number of live electrical wires and exposed sewerage pipes in the hole and a nearby school has also been evacuated for safety reasons.

This is the terrifying moment a gaping sinkhole opened up in the middle of a busy shopping street - swallowing several pedestrians.

The shocking footage shows the pavement suddenly fall through, taking passers-by and a display board with it.

People are seen making a run for it as the hole gets wider and wider, eventually measuring 32 feet long, 16 feet wide and six feet deep.

According to Chinese website Huanqiu , most of the victims were unharmed and rescued by onlookers, although two people were taken to hospital with injuries .

The incident occurred in the middle of a busy shopping street in Lanzhou, which is located in China's Gansu province.

It's believed the footage was recorded around 3pm local time.

Two motorbikes also fell into the gaping hole according to witnesses. Firefighters arrived on the scene to help fellow pedestrians with rescue efforts.

Police have now cordoned off the site while the hole is repaired.

Large sinkhole snarls traffic on Turnpike in Miami-Dade

According to the Miami Herald the sinkhole has brought traffic to a standstill on the Turnpike, closing lanes and two exits.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it is assessing the sinkhole and that traffic is being diverted.

The patrol says the sinkhole was caused by a water line break at around 1 p.m.

There were no injuries or damages to vehicles reported.

Sinkholes are depressions caused when the earth collapses, caused by the dissolving of underlying limestone. An underground cavity grows larger and what's below the ground can no longer support the weight above ground, forcing a collapse.

The largest recorded sinkhole was in Winter Park in 1981, according to the Orlando Sentinel archive. It measured about 350 feet wide and 130 feet deep in the west side of town.

MULBERRY, FL (KTRK) -- Officials say a massive sinkhole in Florida has allowed millions of gallons of radioactive water to pour into one of the world's most productive aquifers.

The sinkhole was found by crews in a containment pond at the New Wales Mosaic plant in Mulberry on August 27th.

A field technician found the water level had dropped at one of the ponds, and upon investigation, found a 45-foot hole with seemingly no bottom, WFTS-TV reports.

Since then, about 215 million gallons of contaminated water used to process fertilizer has drained into the hole.

A recovery well was built to pull the contaminated water out of the aquifer. So far, tests have not detected contaminants in the groundwater, meaning the pumps are working, officials say.

A neighbour has described the moment a huge sinkhole opened up outside his Prestwichhome.

Residents on Heywood Road were shocked when they woke on Monday morning to find a gaping hole in the middle of the road.

Engineers are currently working to repair the hole and estimate that it could take around two weeks.

George, who declined to give his last name, said he was woken up by a loud ‘banging’ sound at around 12.30am.

He said: “It sounded like someone putting out the bins. I got up out of bed to see what was happening and couldn’t see anything but it carried on.

“I looked through the window and saw a little black patch on the road. Then I saw a car backing up the road quickly and I saw the road going in.

“When I spoke to the fire brigade they asked how big it is. I said you could probably fit the fire engine in it.

“It was a bit scary because it kept getting bigger.

“I had to wake everyone up to tell them to move their cars because it started to spread.”

George said the hole was around two metres wide when it first appeared but has now expanded to around six metres.

He added: “I think the problem is there’s a lot of heavy traffic that goes up and down this road - a lot of wagons and cars. The neighbours have been asking for a weight limit.”

Tom and Denise Holt, who also live on Heywood Road said the route is used as a rat run for motorists travelling along Bury Old Road.

Denise said: “The engineers have been here since 4am, and have been very attentive.

“This is the second sinkhole on this road in two years. I think it’s down to a lack of maintenance and increased traffic. We have so many lorries on here.”

The sinkhole opened up in the early hours of Monday morning (October 17).

The road is closed between Bury Old Road and Glebelands Road while engineers work to repair the damage.

A spokesman for United Utilities said: “At this stage we are not sure what has happened and whether the road has collapsed or if it’s linked to a sewer.

“The road has been closed for around half a mile and local traffic diversions are in place.”

Earthquakes Cause Big Sinkhole in NW Greece (Oct 22)

A large sinkhole swallowed up an olive grove in Kalpaki, a rural area outside Ioannina in northwestern Greece, on Saturday.

The sinkhole is estimated to have a depth of 20-30 meters at least, and an overall surface area of around 200 square meters, and is believed to have been caused by a series of earthquakes that struck the region a week ago.

On October 14, Ioannina was hit by a strong tremor measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale and followed by hundreds of aftershocks, some of them quite powerful.

Massive Sinkhole Devours Southern Japan Street (Nov 8)

A huge sinkhole measuring 20 metres wide has caused power outages and major traffic disruptions in downtown Fukuoka, Japan.

The road started caving in at about 5.15am local time and kept growing, said police.

Police said the sinkhole stretches across the road and continues to expand.

Electricity has been cut off to over 100 buildings in the area and people in the buildings nearby are being evacuated.

Homes evacuated as 66ft-wide sinkhole rips open ground in North Yorkshire

HOUSES have been evacuated in North Yorkshire after a huge sinkhole opened up – which practically tore through bricks and mortar.

At least seven homes in Ripon were evacuated when the giant hole appeared, which measures at least 20 metres wide.

Firefighters and emergency crews raced to properties in Magdalen Road last night to get residents away from the gaping mass.

A North Yorkshire fire service spokesperson said: "Two fire crews and an officer from Ripon attended a sinkhole that had appeared at the rear of two properties.

"There were no injuries but seven properties were evacuated."

They added the hole measures around 20 metres by 10 metres, with an unknown depth.

Ben Bramley, who was forced to flee his home, described hearing something like a landslide outside.

He told the BBC: "It was a real mess out there. It's a huge hole that runs from our back door to the garage and it's about 20ft deep."

Just over two years ago, another sinkhole appeared nearby on Magdalen Close, which caused one house to literally rip in two.

The British Geological Society said Ripon is prone to sinkholes because it sits on land that is rich with deposits of gypsum, a dissolvable rock which is slowly melting away.

Firefighters will reportedly return to the scene today to assess the safety of the area

An Algerian highway collapsed swallowing several cars and injuring 11 people.

Six of the injured required hospitalization.

The massive sinkhole opened suddenly on the Ben Akoun highway west of the capital Algiers on Friday night.

Japan's giant sinkhole is sinking again

CNN)A giant sinkhole that was hastily repaired in Japan earlier this month is showing signs of movement.

Traffic was stopped at the busy intersection in Japanese city of Fukuoka on the weekend after the road was seen to sink some seven centimeters (2.7 inches).

Earlier this month, a 30 meter (98 feet) wide, 15 meter (50 feet) deep hole suddenly opened, swallowing five lanes of road and flooding with water.
It was repaired in a matter of days in what was seen as a testament to Japanese engineering and efficiency.

Some doubt was raised over those plaudits Saturday however, when traffic had to be stopped around the hole as a section of road began sinking again. The road has since been re-opened

On Facebook, Fukuoka mayor Soichiro Takashima apologized for not warning residents the ground could sink again.

Filled sinkholes can occasionally reopen dramatically. Last year, a massive sinkhole in Florida which caused the death of a man after it opened under his bedroom, appeared again, sparking renewed fears among local residents.

Man Found Screaming in North Carolina Road Sinkhole (Nov 27)

A man was pulled from a 12-foot sinkhole in a Durham road after being trapped for hours.

"No one is around and he is down in the hole and he's screaming," a 911 caller said.

Redwood Volunteer Fire officials said the incident happened Sunday morning on a road near Falls Lake. The man was stuck in mud and cried for help. A nearby fisherman heard the man's calls for help and contacted authorities.

"He was just uncontrollably shaking," said Chief Randy Clements. "He had obviously been very cold for a long period of time; was shaking just uncontrollably. He couldn't really verbalize other than he kept saying he was OK and was not hurt."

Firefighters climbed into the hole and lowered a backboard and basket.

"We laid him in that, placed it on top of the ladder, tied it in, tied the patient in, and then took a rope and slid him up," Clements said.

The sinkhole is located on an isolated stretch of road.

"Whoever basically heard him most likely saved his life," Clements said.
