Sinkhole Incidents On the Rise

"Stretch zones primarily experience sinking ground, as the support in the rock strata is stretched thin. Thus, buildings implode and gas and water mains break."  ZetaTalk

What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

"We have repeatedly stated that the Earth changes will not diminish, but will increase going into the pole shift.

This is not a lineal matter, as the closer Planet X comes to Earth, an inevitable path, the more the torque effect and the polar wobble where the N Pole of Earth is pushed away violently on a daily basis, occur. The wobble will become more pronounced, more violent. The plates are tugged back West of the Atlantic, pulled forward East of the Atlantic, during the daily rotation of the Earth. The North American continent is allowed to roll East during rotation while the S Pole is pulled West, creating the diagonal pull likely to trigger the New Madrid fault line into an adjustment, and soon. The N Pole is pushed away and allowed to bounce back, daily, as the Earth rotates, a wobble that puts stress on all fault lines when the plates are suddenly in motion, and suddenly stopped!

"As there is no other explanation for the effect on the stretch zone, lacking any earthquakes to blame, and as these stretch zone accidents will continue to emerge, and with ferocity, this is a certain clue to those on the fence, that the influence of Planet X is the cause. Or is it Global Warming?"

ZetaTalk Chat Q&A for April 13, 2013

"Sinkholes almost invariably form in areas subject to karst limestone cavern formation. Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

    Record-breaking skyscraper threatened by sinkholes

    By Euan McKirdy, CNN

updated 9:35 AM EDT, Tue August 5, 2014

CNN) -- The construction of what would be Seoul's tallest building has hit a snag following the appearance of a number of mysterious sinkholes in and around the neighborhood where it is being built.

Residents of South Korea's capital are alarmed by the increasing incidence of sinkholes -- depressions, measuring up to several feet in depth and diameter, which have suddenly appeared around Seoul.

The first one was discovered in June, and since then several others have appeared, local media have reported. Now, in a climate marked by increased safety concerns, the construction of a huge skyscraper in the city has come under scrutiny.

Last month, two holes within a couple of meters of each other were discovered near the National Assembly in the Yeouido district of the capital.

Several examples of this unexplained phenomenon have occurred near the site of the Lotte World Tower, a half-constructed commercial and office development by Korean conglomerate Lotte which, when completed, will be the sixth tallest tower in the world.

Holes have appeared in at least two streets in the Songpa district, where the new tower is being built, including a 50 centimeter (20 inch) wide hole only half a kilometer (a third of a mile) from the Lotte World Tower construction site.

So far, authorities are baffled. "We do not know the cause yet," a police officer told the Korea Times. "In cooperation with Seoul Metro and Seoul Metropolitan Government, we investigated the problem and only found that the holes have nothing to do with sewerage."

A lake near the site, which appears to be shrinking, is also cause for concern. Water levels have fallen about 70 centimeters (27 inches), although Seulki Lee, a spokesperson for Lotte Group, told CNN that it would be "nearly impossible" for the water to drain into the tower's foundations due to a slurry wall between the lake and the construction.

The spokesperson also said that the company was looking into the mysterious sinkholes.

"We are working on an investigation of sinkholes but it will take some time to figure out what's going on," she said.

She said that academics and engineers from Lotte have told the construction company that the sinkholes are not related to the site but it is "necessary to figure out what is going on" to provide assurance for the public.

Plans for the 555-meter (1,821-foot), 123-story tower were first put forward almost two decades ago, but planning permission was slow in coming, due to security concerns from a nearby military base.

Construction of the tower, designed by American firm KPF, is underway and more than half of the tower's floors have been completed. The architecture firm was, at the time of press, unavailable for comment.

Professor Hong Gun Park of Seoul National University's Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering was a consultant on the project, completing an "outsider's evaluation."

He told CNN that the foundations of the building were solid, and that Seoul had no history of subsidence.

"People found sinkholes near the building site, (and) since there is a small lake, they are worried about the robustness of the foundation of the building.

"However, recently many sinkholes were found here and there in Seoul. Furthermore the foundation of the building is deep and is sitting on the deep hard rock. Thus in my opinion there is no problem (with) the structural safety of the building."

He said that it was unlikely that the Seoul municipal government would halt construction without reasonable cause.

The safety concerns over the building come months after the country was shocked by the sinking in April of the Sewol ferry, which lead to widespread criticism throughout South Korea that safety was not a priority. Almost 300 people, mostly teenagers on a school trip, died when the ferry capsized. orv

Sinkhole Swallows Car Near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania (Aug 12)

A sinkhole is causing major concerns after swallowing a car near McKnight Road in Ross Township.

Emergency crews are on the scene and say the driver of the car was rescued before car was swallowed up by the sinkhole.

The car’s owner, Natalie Huddleston, talked with KDKA’s Ralph Iannotti and told him, “I got in the car, I backed up, I felt a thunk, and all of a sudden I was tilted and I felt movement, I was swaying, I kept drifting back and realized I was stuck in this hole.”

Huddleston says she called the tanning bed owner to come out and help, and she was able to escape through the passenger window.

"My customer had called me … she backed out of the spot and she literally backed right into it or the sinkhole happened right as she was driving," said Hollywood Tans owner Lisa Masley. "She called the salon and asked me to run outside and I ran out and her car was literally like a see-saw in the sinkhole. She put down her driver’s side window and I pulled her out. Within five minutes, the whole car was gone."

“I’m in shock, this is not happening, my car is gone, I’m stuck here, how am I going to get out of work?” Huddleston said.

A second, smaller sinkhole also formed in the parking lot next door, outside Midas and BJ Nails & Spa.

There is also a smell of natural gas coming from the area.

Big sinkhole develops on US 61 in Natchez

    http://www.wapt.com/news/central-mississippi/big-sinkhole-develops-...!bErT5Z

NATCHEZ, Miss. —State highway workers have blocked off a big sinkhole that developed this week on U.S. 61 near Natchez Regional Medical Center.

The Natchez Democrat reported that the hole is nearly 15 feet wide and 25 feet deep.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has blocked it off with orange barrels, and workers will start repairing it after engineers are confident it won't continue to grow.

A department engineer, Albert White, said the spot started as a small depression and grew into a sinkhole Tuesday night. He said fixing the hole could take several weeks.

Heavy rains blamed for large north Jackson sinkhole - August 18

    http://www.wbbjtv.com/news/local/Heavy-rains-blamed-for-large-north...

After most of the waters subsided from Monday afternoon's flash floods in north Jackson another problem emerged.

A sinkhole across both lanes of East University Parkway developed.
Crews believe several feet of water that flooded the street earlier in the day weakened it causing it to collapse.

A water main was also affected, cutting off water to several homes in the area. Many who live nearby say they expect the road to be impassable for awhile.

"I have never seen the water get this high. This was the first time for me. The water had gotten probably 8 feet deep in that ditch in the past and it was up to the bank this time," said Eddie Wood, who saw the road collapse.

Detours have been set up for drivers to get around the sinkhole.

Sinkhole and Sewer Collapse in Mansfield - August 19

    http://www.hucknalldispatch.co.uk/news/local/sinkhole-appears-after...

Chad was alerted to this large sinkhole on Mansfield’s Commercial Gate by a reader after some particularly heavy rain.

The road had to be closed and traffic was diverted while an inspection was carried out.

A spokesman for Severn Trent Water said the company had been informed by the Highways Authority of a suspected sewer collapse and had conducted a CCTV survey to check its condition.

She said: “Unfortunately, the survey showed that a section of our sewer had collapsed and was in need of repair.

“To keep both the local community and local traffic safe, we have closed the road, and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing.

“The work will be carried out by our contract partner KIER. We will work hard to get the pipe fixed and the road reopened as quickly as possible.”

'Terrifying' sinkhole 100ft wide appears overnight in Pennines and it's so deep  you can't see the bottom

A 100ft-wide  sinkhole that is so deep the bottom cannot be seen at one end has appeared  overnight just yards from a farmer's house in County Durham.

John Hensby, 71,  says his partner Sam Hillyard, 39, first discovered the hole on Thursday  morning, adding that it has been growing ever since.

And  Mr Hensby now  fears that heavy rain forecast for the coming days could be about to make the  situation even worse.

Mr Hensby, 71, who  lives in Cowshill, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, said: 'I am not sure  where this will end.

'The hole is still  growing. It is astonishing. If you could have heard the bangs, crashes and  rumbles when it first happened you would understand how terrifying it  was.

'My partner Sam  had been walking one of our dogs when she she found it on our land around 80  metres away from our house.

'The land is  surrounded by a sheep farm and there are two or three around at the moment. If a  sheep was to fall down the hole then that would be the end of it. It would be  the same for our two dogs. You wouldn't be able to get to them or even see  them.'

Mr Hensby believes  the collapse could be linked to 19th-century iron or lead mining in the area,  though he has been unable to find evidence of a shaft that may have  collapsed.

Mysterious Crater in Utah Irrigation Pond (Aug 29)

Farmers in southern Utah are scratching their heads and trying to figure out what caused an unusual phenomenon in an irrigation pond.

Earlier this week, Gary Dalton of Circleville discovered a mysterious crater that suddenly appeared under the water.

"The sun was just right," Dalton said, "so I saw this blasted thing that no one had ever seen."

He noticed it after most of the water was drained from the pond for irrigation. Just beneath the surface he saw concentric circles in the pond bottom with a diameter of about 25 feet. The outer ring is a circular depression filled with algae. An inner circle looks as though something erupted from beneath, forming what looks startlingly like a small volcanic crater.

Experts from the Utah Geological Survey took a look and were initially baffled.

"Well, yeah, we've got several theories," said veteran geologist Bill Lund as he examined the pond. "Most of them have gone up in smoke."

Most of the theories were disposed of almost immediately. Some had speculated that the feature was caused by a natural spring, pushing up from under the pond after being supercharged by recent rains. But Lund said that theory was quickly disproved by aerial photos that were taken before the pond was excavated 2 ½ years ago.

"This was an alfalfa field and there was no spring here," Lund said. "It's not a spring."

Another theory was that a buried pipeline had been punctured during construction of the pond. But Lund said there is no pipeline.

Another possibility is that there was a burp of methane gas from decaying organic material under the pond. Lund strongly doubts that theory because the local geology isn't the type that sometimes causes such events.

"If we were in coal country," Lund said, "I'd be thinking about that a little harder but, you know, we're not."

Earthquakes sometimes will cause similar features in sand or mud, due to liquefaction of soils. But Lund ruled that out because there have been no earthquakes in the Circleville area powerful enough to trigger liquefaction.

During the geologists' visit, Dalton and his sons maneuvered a platform-lift over the crater to get a closer look.

Although the Daltons saw a fiery meteor in the sky a few weeks ago, Lund has essentially ruled that out as the cause; the sighting took place long before the crater appeared. Also, no one in nearby Circleville reported hearing any loud booms.

"We don't think it's an impact crater," Lund said. "We don't think anything hit there."

Hovering over the crater in the lift, the curious farmers and geologists lowered a tape measure into the crater. The central depression is about 7 inches deep. They were able to push the handle of a pitchfork another 13 inches or so straight down in the soft center.

"Obviously something came up and created this ring," Lund said. "But then it collapsed back on itself and closed off the vent. Whatever the vent was is closed."

"I mean there are still some unanswered questions here," Lund said. "That's for sure."

Bus gets stuck in suburban Phoenix sinkhole

    http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/sep/03/bus-gets-stuck-in-sinkho...

A city bus got stuck in a sinkhole after a water main broke in suburban Phoenix, forcing the passengers and driver to evacuate through the windows.

Tempe police say the back right side of the bus fell into the hole at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. All 11 passengers and the driver got out safely.

It took about two hours for city crews to shut off all the valves and stop the flow of water in the area of Apache Boulevard and McClintock Drive.

Two tow trucks tried to pull the bus from the sinkhole, but authorities say the bus was too heavy. A crane was brought in and hoisted the bus out of the sinkhole around 5 p.m.

Some residents in the area reported water damage in their homes, and the operators of a motel said some guests had to be moved out after water covered the bottom floor.

Authorities say the cause of the water main break hasn't been determined, but it likely was due to the age of the infrastructure. Police say nearby light rail tracks weren't impacted by the water and trains were still operating.

Romulus man falls into sinkhole and nearly drowns

    http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/26467033/romulus-man-falls-into-s...

A Romulus couple got the scare of their lives Saturday while investigating rising water around their home. The homeowner says he fell into a sinkhole and nearly drowned.

He opened the garage door to find his classic cars and a giant tool collection threatened. The flood waters were rising at Joe and Denise Klonica's property on Inkster Rd. in Romulus. Denise checked out the back yard as water made its way into the house.

"The water was just gushing out of the back door of my garage going into the backyard like a flowing river," Mr. Klonica told Fox 2.

What happened next was a total shock. Joe stepped out into the front yard and was swallowed up by a deep sinkhole. Without warning, Joe was in over his head -- treading water about eight feet deep and grabbing any earth he could to pull himself up. But, the loose mud was waterlogged and slippery.

"It was scary 'cause as I was grabbing the sides, the dirt was coming in with me," he said.

Fortunately, Joe and Denise had a carpenter at the house installing a new front door. He ran out to the sinkhole and grabbed Joe's arms, pulling him to safety. We're told there may be a water main break in the yard, but crews won't know for sure until they dry it out and do some digging to get a closer look.

The road to hell: major new highway caves in 14 times in six months

    http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1597909/sinkholes-have-cause...

A major highway that opened in Henan province in April has caved in 14 times, causing a headache for drivers who have been warned to be on the alert for sudden collapses.

The latest hole appeared Friday, ironically opening up beneath a truck cleaning up debris following a previous collapse, mainland media reported.

The incidents have become so frequent that locals have taken to mocking the state of the highway in Zhengzhou city.

The city's construction committee on Friday warned the public about the the sinkholes, but failed to explain the reason for their appearance, the Beijing News reported.

Flaw by floor: Lada 4x4 falls down giant pothole after road collapses when driver comes to a halt in Ukraine

    • A road in southeastern Ukraine collapsed underneath a 4x4
    • Local police said the pothole was caused by a broken drain
    • The unfortunate driver was able to climb out of the car unharmed

A Ukrainian man miraculously managed to escape unharmed after the road collapsed underneath him as he was driving.

Gordey Efremov was travelling home in the city of Dnipropetrovsk in south-eastern Ukraine, when the ground suddenly vanished below.

Images from the accident show Mr Efremov's 4x4 lying on its side in a giant pothole, practically swallowed by the road.

Potluck: A 4x4 has created a giant pothole after the road collapsed underneath it near Dnipropetrovsk in south-eastern Ukraine

Mr Efremov had been travelling in his Lada Niva when he suddenly found the ground vanishing underneath him.

He said: ‘Because of the rain, traffic was going slowly anyway and then when the car in front of me stopped I put on the brakes, and slow down.

‘Then I suddenly got this sinking feeling and before I knew it was disappearing into the road.

‘The car tipped onto its side and muddy waters started to flood in through the air vents and door.

‘I had to open the window above and climb out where some people helped me onto the street.

Down the drain: The driver of the Lada Niva, Gordey Efremov, was able to climb out of the car and escaped unharmed

‘I escaped without a scratch but that's more than can be said from the car which was pretty badly broken up.’

Police said the broken drain had been leaking rainwater into the soil underneath the road, washing away the foundations and causing it to collapse when the car stopped.

Police spokesman Leonid Pokrovski said: ‘It was an accident waiting to happen.

‘As long as the cars were moving fast over the top it bore the weight, but once a motorist stopped it was too much and it gave way.’

Phuket downpours leave sinkhole, landslip across roads

PHUKET: Workers from the Phuket Highways Office tomorrow will begin repairs to a gaping hole along the southbound lane on the bypass road left behind by the week of heavy downpours across the island.

“We have closed the outside lane and placed warning signs and cones to inform motorists of the hazard,” Phuket Highways Office Director Samak Luedwonghad told the Phuket Gazette today.

Flashing warning lamps have also been set up to prevent nighttime drivers from plunging into the sinkhole, he added.

“We will begin repairs tomorrow, as we have yet to set up the correct equipment at the site,” Mr Samak said.

Meanwhile, Kathu Municipality workers will begin clearing away a landslide that covered Luang Sua Road, which crosses the hills from Kathu to Wichit.

“We are aware of that hazard too, but that road is under Kathu Municipality’s responsibility,” Mr Samak explained.

“Both of these hazards were caused by the non-stop rain we’ve had for the past five days.”

10-point buck rescue from Iowa sinkhole is caught on video

DECORAH, Iowa —Three Iowans rescued a 10-point buck from a sinkhole near Decorah, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported.

Video of the rescue was uploaded to YouTube.

It shows the three using a rope and pulling the deer free from the sinkhole.  The video was published on Sept. 27.

The rescue happened at the Winneshiek County farm owned by Gary Smorstad

The DNR reported that while putting up hay, a tractor's tire slipped into the recently opened sinkhole.

Smorstad and the neighbor towed the tractor free and then looked down and saw a deer looking up at them from the sinkhole.

The DNR said Smorstad's son Eric, Gavin Nimrod and Bryton Meyer mounted the rescue.

"It was hard to see; only three or four feet wide and maybe ten feet deep," Nimrod told the DNR. "We made a loop, caught an antler and kept his head up. We decided to tie another rope; Eric and Bryton held my legs and I went down and re-tied it."

The deer appeared to be OK and ran away just after the rescuers pulled him from the sinkhole.

30-foot-deep hole opens in road at Holiday subdivision

     — A 30-foot-deep hole that opened up in a street Wednesday night blocked the main access road for residents in part of a Holiday subdivision, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 20-by-20-foot hole has closed Blue Marlin Boulevard at Parrot Fish Drive in the Gulfwinds subdivision.

Doug Tobin, a spokesman for Pasco County government, said Thursday morning that an engineering firm, PSI Engineering, is determining whether a sinkhole or some other cause led to the road collapse. The county water department checked the hole and did not see any evidence that a storm water issue might have caused the hole, he said.

Right now, the county is simply referring to the hole as a depression and it appears to be stabilized, he said.

“Could it grow?” Tobin said. “It certainly could grow. We’ve seen it in the past where depressions have grown. But we believe right now that’s where it’s contained to.”

Tobin said it could be as much as a week before any repair efforts start.

“You don’t want to go in filling in dirt until you understand what the problem is,” he said.

The road is a private road with public access, so it’s unclear whether the county or the homeowners association would pay for the repair, Tobin said.

Vernon June, president of the Gulfwinds homeowners association, said Thursday morning that he believes the collapse is the result of a road failure, not a sinkhole. He said residents for some time have complained to the developer, Beazer Homes, about substandard street construction, such as cracking and drainage problems.

“Every manhole is cracking up like that,” June said, pointing to a manhole cover with a crack around it a little south of the hole.

The homeowners association had an engineering study conducted and gave the developer a list of concerns, June said.

A representative for Beazer Homes could not be reached for comment.

Blue Marlin Boulevard exits the Gulfwinds subdivision only at Anclote Boulevard to the south, and dead-ends at the north end.

An emergency cut-through has been set up for trapped residents using a pedestrian path from Swordfish Avenue to Sweetbriar Drive. The cut-through allows access to neighborhood schools Anclote High, Paul R. Smith Middle and Gulfside Elementary.

Tobin said the county is urging residents who use the emergency exit to use caution, especially when students are walking to and from school.

Danny Rowland, who lives on a street about a block south of the hole, said the street problems in Gulfwinds come up routinely at homeowners association meetings, but seeing a section of the road collapse was still a surprise.

“I don’t think anyone expected that,” he said. “I’m glad it’s not someone’s house.”

Mystery surrounds the appearance of numerous sinkholes in the Red Cliffs area during the past 12 months, including the latest this week.

    http://www.sunraysiadaily.com.au/story/2610134/sinkhole-mystery/?cs=12

Mildura Rural City Council has confirmed up to six sinkholes had been spotted in Red Cliffs, including along Isaacs Lane and Heytesbury Avenue.

The latest appeared on Kauri Street about 12 noon on Monday.

A motorbike rider narrowly missed hitting the 40cm diameter hole thanks to a passing motorist who flagged him in the nick of time.

Resident Tamara Hocking said her husband Peter was on the road five minutes earlier and the sinkhole was not there.

“He was flagged down by another driver who called the police,” Ms Hocking said.

She said the hole was “definitely not” a pothole.

“It was reasonably large, about four feet round and about four feet deep."

Council’s infrastructure services co-ordinator Michael Vaughan said sinkholes had appeared in laneways, local roads and on a nature strip.

He said no one was certain what was causing them, or how to prevent them from reoccurring, but some theories did have weight.

Merafong sinkhole 18m wide ... and growing

    http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/merafong-sinkhole-18...

Johannesburg - Detours, dust, threats, car crashes and a R25 million repair job. At the centre of it all is a very big hole in Merafong.

On a rainy night on February 21, a sinkhole appeared right next to the R500 main road between Carletonville and the N14 on the way to Rustenburg. It’s just south of where the R41 joins the R500.

The sinkhole is about 18m across and about 25m at the deepest point, and growing.

The road is being blocked off with concrete barriers, running a detour along gravel servitude roads through farmland, a temporary fix that has left tempers frayed.

The owners of the land with the sinkhole, who did not want to be identified, said that passing motorists had threatened to sue them for costs of fuel and vehicle repairs because of the detour. Commuters are fed up with the inconvenience and damage to vehicles, while residents are irritated by the dust, road damage and noise.

“The fear is that it’s going to be a long-term thing. There’s no time frame,” said DA councillor in Merafong City, Judy Rossouw, explaining that repairs hadn’t started as expected last month.

EXACT MOMENT SINKHOLE FORMS CAPTURED ON VIDEO:

Cement Mixer Swallowed by Sinkhole in Russia (Oct 20)

A lorry driver narrowly escaped serious injury when the cement mixer he was driving was swallowed up by a massive sinkhole that appeared in the road.

Adam Zubarev, 47, had been heading to a building site in the city of Voronezh in western Russia's Voronezh Oblast when he suddenly came to an abrupt stop after the ground collapsed underneath him.

He said: 'I was travelling pretty fast when suddenly I felt the truck bump as if it had hit something and come to a stop, which sent me flying forward. I had absolutely no idea what had happened but then it started lifting in the air and suddenly I was looking at the sky. I opened the door and jumped out as quickly as possible and realised that almost the entire lorry had vanished into a hole in the ground.'

In total it was in the ground for almost two days. Yefremov said: 'We couldn't risk putting up a crane until we had tested the rest of the ground to make sure there weren't any other surprises.'

    GUAM: Massive Sinkhole/Water Main Break

    http://www.guampdn.com/article/20141030/NEWS01/141030005/Sinkhole-c...

Motorists are advised to expect slow-moving traffic on Route 16 during rush hour this afternoon because of a 100-foot by 25-foot sinkhole that caused continued closure of the inner south-bound and north-bound lanes near a tire depot and the Guam National Guard complex in Barrigada.

The hole was caused by 24-inch water line break, according to the Navy.

The Navy water line supplies water from the Radio Barrigada reservoir to the Navy's assets, including the nearby Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station and a private residence bordering federal property. Water service has been restored, the Navy stated in a press release.

Crews from Naval Facilities Engineering Command Marianas and DZSP 21 LLC worked throughout last night and repaired the broken 24-inch water line.

Crews are still on the scene evaluating the 100-foot by 25-foot hole caused by the water line break, according to the Navy.

Temporary road repairs will begin this afternoon but residents are advised to remain cautious and to expect increased traffic during this evening’s rush hour, according to the Navy.

Giant sinkholes cause fear in Wheeland estate

    http://tcweeklynews.com/giant-sinkholes-cause-fear-in-wheeland-esta...

A WHEELAND homeowner is scared for her life and her property after three huge sinkholes appeared in her garden following heavy rain.
Azizi Parker told the Weekly News that she is seeking her money back for her two bedroom home of three years which she says is currently showing signs of strain.
Cracks have appeared in the walls and Parker said she is worried that the building may collapse, leaving her homeless.
She no longer stays for long periods in the house in Millennium Heights and instead resides with nearby family members.
The holes appeared in Parker’s back yard after tropical storm Cristobal struck the TCI at the end of August dumping several inches of rain on the country.
She explained that on the following Tuesday at about 7am she went outside about 15ft from her back door to plant some seeds.
"I was digging in the dirt planting the seeds and in the side of my eye I glanced and saw a dark shadow and when I looked over it was a hole so I jumped up.
"I got up and ran over to my neighbour and said: ‘I have a sinkhole in my yard.’”

CAPE TOWN – A Parow woman narrowly escaped death when her car became engulfed by a sinkhole in Low Road, Wetton.

Cape Town local Ayesha Parker was driving home one evening when she suddenly felt the road collapse underneath her. The next moment, her car had sunk deep into the earth and all that surrounded her was gravel.

“I was in a hole and I didn’t know I was in a hole. The hole covered the entire car right up to the roof. I was terrified.”

A couple, who had witnessed the incident, rushed to Parker’s rescue by bravely pulling her out of her car to safety.

“They saw the car disappear into the ground. They just told me to get out immediately. I stood on my seat and they dragged me to safety. As they did that, the car sunk further and immediately started to fill with water.”

Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services Ernest Sonnenbergsays an investigation shows that a water main had burst which caused a hole to develop. The earth then gradually seeped into it.

The road that was covered by the tar had eventually weakened to the point that it fell into the hole that had been building up for a while.

Sonnenberg says although incidents like this rarely happen in Cape Town, he apologised to Parker who says she is still traumatised by the experience.

He says Parker has to lodge an insurance claim with the City of Cape Town to replace her car.

Harrisburg Pennsylvania Holds Sinkhole Summit (Nov 7)

Leading experts in engineering, geology and government gathered Friday in Harrisburg for the first ever Sinkhole Summit.

Pennsylvania has two dilemmas when it comes to sinkholes: limestone and water. Both are inescapable, and both cost municipalities millions of dollars in headaches.

Mayor Eric Papenfuse said the summit is a first for the area and might be a first in the nation.

"This isn't just a Harrisburg problem," Papenfuse said. "It's a statewide problem."

People packed into the room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday to debate how to fix sinkholes and fund repairs.

Harrisburg has been plagued by neighborhood-wide sinkholes that have displaced many residents in recent years.

Gulp: The moment giant Florida sinkhole swallows car whole

    • Sinkhole opened up on driveway causing six families to be evacuated
    • Initially measured just 4ft by 4ft but expanded to 10ft by 10ft in minutes
    • Some neighbours say they will stay in hostels for fear of going home

A sinkhole has swallowed a car in Florida and caused six homes to be evacuated after appearing on a driveway yesterday morning.

The hole was barely 4ft wide by 4ft deep when fire crews arrived at the mobile home in Holiday, Florida, at around 10.45am - but by 11 am it had grown to 10ft by 10ft.

The family living at 1728 Torch St, where the hole opened up, have been told their house will be condemned - while five neighbouring families were also evacuated.

Giant sinkhole swallows up old mine in Russia's Urals

    November 20, 2014

A sinkhole 20 by 30 meters (65 by 98 feet) in size has been found near a Uralkali mine in Russia's Perm region. While the company says the development is of no further threat, locals fear the whole nearby town could go underground.

The sinkhole was first  discovered by Uralkali's Solikamsk-2 mine workers on November 18.  According to local emergency services, it's located some two  miles from the mine itself, in an old abandoned mine.

Speculation on the cause of this event is unlikely to be resolved, as the establishment does not want the public to focus on an unstable footing. The Eurasian Plate is solid, though under stretch stress from one end to the other, from Europe to the shores of China. We have predicted a new seaway

ripping up toward the Ural Mountains, though this rip will not occur until the hour of the Pole Shift. The seaway will rip along the western border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and aim toward the low lands just to the east of the Ural Mountains. This region has ripped before, as the geology shows.

What happens when long frozen land, formerly tropical so that trapped vegetation has evolved into methane gas, gets stretched? Methane releases, and being lighter than air, rises. A spark of any kind will light this highly flammable gas. Air layers passing over one another are sufficient to spark this, as this is what causes lightning to spark. A slight difference in the electrical charge is all that is required. We have from the start of ZetaTalk stated that Tunguska
    http://www.zetatalk.com/science/s57.htm
was a methane explosion, the frozen ground opened by an earthquake and the rising methane lit by lightning. The explosion traveled back along the methane path to the ground, in Tunguska, thus the basis of the myth that a meteor was the cause.

Third sinkhole swallows car in Florida neighbourhood

    • Tampa Bay neighbourhood of Holiday hit by sinkholes
    • New hole is 6ft deep and about 10ft wide

A third hole has formed in in the driveway of a Tampa Bay-area neighbourhood, swallowing a car to its bumper.

Pasco County spokesman Doug Tobin said the new hole opened on Saturday in the front yard of a resident’s home. It was about 6ft deep and grew about 10ft wide. The resident was temporarily relocating.

Two other holes formed earlier this week, about a quarter of a mile away. Engineers have yet to confirm that the depressions are sinkholes.

The first hole grew to 10ft wide and 10ft deep. A mobile home at the brink of that hole was condemned. Five other homes were evacuated.

Tobin said work had been suspended on a nearby sewer lift station, due to the subsurface activity.

    Woman swallowed by Springvale sinkhole

    http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/woman-swallowed-by-springvale-sin...

A woman has collapsed at her home just hours after being pulled from a three-metre deep sinkhole in Melbourne's south-east on Tuesday.

Christina Beaumont, 52, was hanging out washing in the backyard of an Olympic Avenue property in Springvale South when the sinkhole opened up beneath her shortly after 11.30am.

She fell into deep underground water and was forced to tread water to prevent more mud collapsing around her.

The mother-of-six was trapped in the hole for more than 20 minutes before a neighbour heard her cries for help and called triple-0 about 12.10pm.

Firefighters used ropes to help Ms Beaumont climb out of the hole. She was rescued about 12.30pm.

Ms Beaumont's daughter Melissa said her mother collapsed soon after returning home.

Sinkhole appears in yet another road

    http://www.getbucks.co.uk/news/local-news/sinkhole-appears-yet-anot...

People were shocked when they saw these holes in the ground, in yet another case of a sinkhole swallowing up the ground.

The sinkhole appeared in Wooster Road , Beaconsfield.

It is not the first, with others appearing in Cherry Tree Road last week and in May one appeared in Holtspur Top Lane .

Work has just finished on the latter, but the investigation is ongoing at Cherry Tree Road.

A spokesman for Transport for Bucks said a team has visited Wooster Road today and placed barriers and cones around the hole.

He said: "Its specialist contractor will also be investigating the site today to determine the extent of the hole and the appropriate remedy."

Reportedly the sinkhole is 'very close' to a house, with a digger parked nearby.

Sinkholes have also appeared in Gerrards Cross in a garden , and on a drive in Walters Ash swallowing up a car.

Massive Sinkhole Opens on Washington Heights Street

    http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20141201/washington-heights/massive...

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A huge sinkhole opened up on West 158th Street Monday morning, leading a garbage truck to become stuck in the gaping hole and closing the street to traffic, according to locals and police.

It was unclear what caused the sinkhole, located near the corner of Edgecombe Avenue, though it managed to partially swallow a Department of Sanitation truck, a witness and police source said.

“They pulled a garbage truck out,” said Earl Green, 40, who works at a building close to the intersection. “That’s crazy.”

A police source confirmed that a truck belonging to the Sanitation Department had gotten stuck, but had since been freed. No injuries were reported.

As of Monday afternoon, West 158th Street was closed to traffic between Edgecombe and St. Nicholas avenues.

A spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection, which is normally responsible for repairing sinkholes, said an investigation at the site revealed a small break in the sewer line that runs beneath the road. Temporary repairs, including rebuilding the roadway, are currenlty under way at the site, he said.

2 sinkholes open up on San Francisco streets during rainstorm

    http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/2-sinkholes-open-up-on-S...

A parched Bay Area may need the rain, but Wednesday’s storm caused power outages, trapped three cars in a flooded highway underpass, flooded more than a dozen homes, and triggered sinkholes, including a growing 15-by-15-foot crater at a San Francisco intersection.

That sinkhole at Sixth Avenue and Lake Street in the Richmond District involved a broken 8-inch water main, but it’s unclear if the pipe burst before or after the roadway collapsed, said Tyrone Jue, a spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

It’s possible a sewer line also under the roadway could have had a hole in it, causing sand to drain into the sewer line “like an hourglass,” leaving nothing to support the roadbed, Jue said.

“We’re unclear on the sequence of events” because it was taking crews several hours to get the water pipe shut off so they could examine the damage. They were still working on it around noon, he said.

The street there will be closed there indefinitely, with the repair time unknown. A second sinkhole also appeared along a curb in the Castro.

A 10 foot wide sinkhole at 6th and Lake Streets in the Richmond District of San Francisco appeared early Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 2014. Biggest storm in years hits Bay Area hard
In the Richmond, the intersection was roped off Wednesday morning with yellow police tape and the hole surrounded by about 20 orange cones. Four backhoes and four PG&E maintenance trucks were at the scene, as crews worked through off-and-on rain jack hammering an additional hole farther away, apparently to access the pipe, which was still gushing water at 11 a.m.

Donna Delauter, 57, who lives on a corner of the intersection, said the sinkhole started off much smaller.

“It has just grown and grown,” Delauter said. “As a property owner and tax payer for the last 35 years, I wonder how this could happen all over the city. It’s shocking. It’s very disconcerting to see a hole that size. More than several cars can fit inside. I’d like to have confidence that the city can address this, especially since I live so close.”

Giant 'sinkhole' appears in Upper Basildon front garden

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-30518983

A "massive" sinkhole has appeared in the front garden of a house in Berkshire.

The 10m (32ft) wide and 5m (16ft) deep crater formed outside the family home of Sarah Jenkins, in Upper Basildon, near Reading.

Ms Jenkins said: "It's massive and it's getting bigger all the time."

Consultant engineer Dr Clive Edmonds described it as "one of the larger of the hole sizes to appear".

The hole first appeared on 5 December but is continuing to grow.

Ms Jenkins added: "The only access to our property has been across our neighbour's garden.

"It's taken out quite a bit of the driveway and garden and it's sitting underneath my children's climbing frame, so it's very serious.

"It's dangerous. Living with this is absolutely dreadful."

Massive road collapse shuts down part of downtown Bangor

    4:53 p.m. EST December 30, 2014

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police had to block off a section of Hammond Street in downtown Bangor because of a big sinkhole that opened up overnight, Tuesday.

The hole is located around 73 Hammond St., which is near the U.S. Post Office as well as The Fiddlehead restaurant and Massimos Cucina Italiana.

The hole is approximately 15-to-30 feet wide and eight feet deep, Bangor Public Works officials said.

Public Works officials said the collapse was caused by a sewage pipe that gave way. That pipe could date back all the way to the 1800s.

"They're old sewers, and just like anything they don't last forever," Public Works Director Dana Wardwell said. "They get a defect in them, and when you get rain and frost and all the elements working against it, we sometimes have these."

The collapse drew a lot of attention, with people stopping to look into it and snap pictures.

"I had to post it on Facebook, show it to my friends," onlooker Charles Daniel said. "They didn't believe me when I said there was a big hole in downtown Bangor."

Drivers are being asked to stay away from the area until further notice.

Bangor residents started a conversation on Twitter parodying the hole using the hashtag #Bangorsinkhole.

    Horse's Rescue From Florida Sinkhole

A horse that had been put out to pasture had to be rescued when a sinkhole opened up in the Florida pasture, trapping him.

Nate, a 30-year-old horse, was stuck in the hole for about three hours last Friday before personnel from the fire department in Oxford, Florida, arrived to put straps and harnesses around him and hauled him out.

"He was in the 'retirement pasture,' and we believe the ground just collapsed underneath him," Maryann Marsh, co-owner of TMMA Farms told ABC News. "He was lucky enough to almost be in a sitting position in the hole, which is why he didn’t break any legs."

PHOTO: Owner Maryann Marsh tries to comfort Nate the horse once he was found in a sinkhole.

PHOTO: Owner Maryann Marsh tries to comfort Nate the horse once he was found in a sinkhole.

Marsh said she recruited a handful of neighbors to try to pull Nate free, but the effort failed, partly because the horse's feet had fallen asleep. Marsh called the 9-1-1, which brought the help of the fire department. With the additional bodies and straps, Nate was yanked free.

Nate is one of three horses on the alpaca farm, including his "best friend" Hershey, a retired party pony, and more than 40 alpacas.

Marsh said Nate is doing "very well," and just had a back swollen leg.

"[Hershey] was very concerned through the whole process," Marsh said.

    Sinkhole Closes South Omaha Street

    http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/Sinkhole-Closes-Street-287370331...

There is a large sinkhole in the middle of the street at 20th & Pierce in Omaha.

Leslie Mosley tells WOWT 6 News she heard a loud noise about 1 p.m. Thursday. When she stepped outside, there it was.

According to Omaha Public Works, a city employee noticed the ground beginning to sink on Tuesday and alerted the city. At that point, barricades were put up to prevent anyone from driving over the area.

Two days later the hole opened.

When crews investigated on Tuesday they saw an over 100 year old manhole had failed, causing water to leak underneath the pavement and wash away the dirt. With nothing to hold up the road, the pavement collapsed.

"Yesterday I just heard a loud crash like a car accident, looked out the window, there was no cars, but I did see a huge hole in the street," Mosley said. "All I could say was, 'Oh my God, oh my God' as I was putting on clothes to come take pictures."

The city is bringing in a contractor to help fix the nearly 30 foot deep hole. The city estimates it will be fixed in about a month.
