"Stretch zones primarily experience sinking ground, as the support in the rock strata is stretched thin. Thus, buildings implode and gas and water mains break." ZetaTalk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We have repeatedly stated that the Earth changes will not diminish, but will increase going into the pole shift.
This is not a lineal matter, as the closer Planet X comes to Earth, an inevitable path, the more the torque effect and the polar wobble where the N Pole of Earth is pushed away violently on a daily basis, occur. The wobble will become more pronounced, more violent. The plates are tugged back West of the Atlantic, pulled forward East of the Atlantic, during the daily rotation of the Earth. The North American continent is allowed to roll East during rotation while the S Pole is pulled West, creating the diagonal pull likely to trigger the New Madrid fault line into an adjustment, and soon. The N Pole is pushed away and allowed to bounce back, daily, as the Earth rotates, a wobble that puts stress on all fault lines when the plates are suddenly in motion, and suddenly stopped!
"As there is no other explanation for the effect on the stretch zone, lacking any earthquakes to blame, and as these stretch zone accidents will continue to emerge, and with ferocity, this is a certain clue to those on the fence, that the influence of Planet X is the cause. Or is it Global Warming?"
ZetaTalk Chat Q&A for April 13, 2013
"Sinkholes almost invariably form in areas subject to karst limestone cavern formation. Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

An elderly woman had her car stuck in a eight foot sinkole [DEADLINE]
Jean Lugton, 73, was horrified after her Corsa got stuck in the two foot wide chasm which appeared as she waited at a set of traffic lights.
The elderly woman was rescued by a group of passing students who managed to lift the car out of the sinkhole and police cordoned off the street.
The dramatic incident happened around 7.45pm yesterday in Edinburgh, Scotland as Ms Lugton was driving to meet friends.
Ms Lugton explained she was at a set of traffic lights when her car was almost swallowed by the sinkhole.
She said: "I thought I had hit a pothole, I tried to rev my engine to get out but it didn't work.
"When I got out of my car I saw that my wheel up to about half way was stuck in the hole."
Ms Lugton, who escaped without injury, described her experience as a "complete horror" and said the sinkhole looked more like "a cave".
She was rescued by four students who managed to get the car from the sinkhole to the side of the road.
Ms Lugton is going to take her car to a garage to get it checked for damage but declined to comment on whether she would sue the council.
She said: "It was just a complete horror.
"When we looked into the hole it was just completely hollow underneath the road, not like a pothole but more like a sinkhole. It was like a cave, it was terrifying."

Sinkholes Ravage Malaysian Neighborhood (Mar 1)

Four families escaped an incident of sinkholes in Kampung Pengkalan Gate Tambahan Dua, in Pengkalan at 3.30am on Saturday.
The first case in Perak this year, the sinkholes caused a five-metre deep crack developing inside a wooden house which extended outside in Laluan Lahat Timur 2/5 in the village.
Two houses each on the left and right side of house were also damaged, with cracks appearing on the floors and walls.
The families with 18 residents are now placed at a Kemas (Community Development Department) hall, located near their homes.
G. Sandaran, 64, a former Ipoh City Council employee, said his son, 31-year-old S. Anbakalan's house, located on the left of his unit, was badly damaged in the incident.
He said he heard what sounded like wood breaking and thought that thieves were trying to break into his house.
"When I came out, I saw the structure on the left side of my house had sunk.
"I immediately tried to shift my motorcycle and it was at that time the soil collapsed, causing the walls of two rooms in my house to crack and sink," he told reporters.
Pasir Puteh Fire and Rescue Station chief Zainasri Zainal said five other sinkholes of 1.5m to 2m deep were found at the open space in front of the houses.
A one-hectare area affected by the sinkholes had been cordoned off and firemen were at the scene to ensure work to shift out the victims' belongings and to vacate their homes were carried out safely, he added.

Sinkhole swallows two vehicles near Hayden Lake after culvert fails
HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Three people were taken to the hospital after two vehicles drove into a sinkhole early this morning near Hayden Lake, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office says.
Deputies say they found two vehicles that had driven into a large washout on Rimrock Road. Investigators say a culvert under the road failed due to heavy runoff.
The hole ended up being 10 feet wide and about eight feet deep.
The sheriff's office says 24-year-old Clifton McMahon drove into the hole as well as 31-year-old Melissa Ehrmantraut of Post Falls. The two drivers and a passenger in the van were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

30-foot sinkhole develops behind Federal Courthouse in Boston
The weather in New England has been chaotic over the last few months, but there hasn't been anything that really qualifies as a natural disaster. Until Wednesday.
Several news outlets reported that a large sinkhole appeared behind Joe Moakley Federal Courthouse on Northern Avenue in South Boston.
No injuries were reported and that the area was fenced off as a crew worked to contain and repair the damage. A 30-foot sinkhole certainly isn't the worst this country has seen, but for Boston, that's pretty bad.
BostInno said that Boston Police Captain John Greland's tweet (see above) was the first report of the sinkhole. But Wednesday night, local news outlets were on scene with live coverage.

Shock as giant 40ft sinkhole drains water from pond in Stockport Park - Nr Manchester UK
The man-made pond at Abney Hall Park in Stockport took just hours to drain away after water was spotted spiralling down a ‘giant plughole’ on Thursday morning
A 40ft sinkhole has drained almost all of the water from a pond in one of Stockport’s main parks.
The man-made pond at Abney Hall Park in Stockport took just hours to drain away after water was spotted spiralling down a ‘giant plughole’ on Thursday morning.
The hole in the bed of the clay pond is believed to lie above a massive 40ft sinkhole which is taking water away to a nearby waterfall.
Work to preserve wildlife living in the pond is currently underway, while walkers and park enthusiasts have reacted with horror at the state of the former beauty spot.
Jean Goulden, chair of the Friends of Abney Hall Park, said: “You could see the water swirling around just like there was a giant plughole.
“It’s terrible for the community as it’s a much-loved area for families and dog walkers, it’s our little bit of countryside in the middle of the village and we feel very lucky to have it, so we’re hoping something can be done as soon as possible.”
Kate Peacock, who runs the nearby Abney Gardens Community Cafe - and even gave her two children the middle name ‘Abney’ after the park - said: “It’s the heart of the park and we’re determined to do whatever it takes to save it.
“We noticed the water had gone down slightly on Monday, then a bit more on Tuesday and by Wednesday we thought ‘something’s going on here’ and started reporting it to all the relevant agencies.
“It’s unbelievable that you’ve got a giant sinkhole in the middle of Cheadle.”
The pond was built in the 1970s and is currently home to a range of fish as well as mallards, swans and moorhens.
Some of the fish are thought to have been drained away and others are left in a small pocket of remaining water in the middle of the pond.
The Environment Agency has said there is no immediate risk to wildlife and no pollution to other waterways.
A Stockport Council spokesman said the pond is no longer losing water and work to assess the situation is ongoing.
He said: “The water that continues to flow out of the pond is running at a rate similar to that which is flowing in. The advice from the Environment Agency is that the fish are fine where they are.
“The outflow from the pond has been traced and there has been no flooding of surrounding land or property.”

Another sinkhole in Armala, locals terrified
The land cave-in that appeared at Thulibeshi Phant of Armala, Kaski, today morning, has further terrorised locals.
The sinkhole has destroyed Krishna Prasad Paudel's cowshed. According to Paudel, the sinkhole appeared suddenly at 4:00 am today. "We evacuated a buffalo to a safe place. Otherwise, it would have been killed," said Paudel.
After a sinkhole appeared on land deemed safe by locals, they have been terrified.
"My family members did their best to fill the sinkhole with soil, but the cave-in has not stopped, Paudel said.
"The cave-in at the upper portion of the land has taken away our sleep," Parbati Acharya said. "The sinkhole has endangered the entire settlement. Wherever we step, there seems to be a cave-in. How can we save our property?" Acharya wondered.
Thulibeshi Phant has developed more than 150 sinkholes ever since it began around five months ago. The cave-ins have jeopardised a private school, 200 houses and vast swathes of arable land.
Secretary Ram Prasad Parajuli of Armala Disaster Concern and Construction Cooperation Committee said the sinkholes have destroyed water pipelines. "The sinkholes have damaged arable land," Parajuli said, adding, "Armala locals have incurred loss of Rs 90 million so far."
A high-level government committee formed to study Armala sinkholes had recommended Rs 7.3 million to control the disaster. Experts have warned of worse consequences if appropriate measures are not adopted to control sinkholes before the onset of monsoon.

Detroit A giant sinkhole has opened up on Detroit's west side.
The sinkhole is at the intersection of Monterey Street and Linwood, near Elmhurst Street.
Crews have blocked off the intersection and have begun evaluating the damages. The sinkhole is approximately 20 feet wide and 30 feet deep.
The concrete gave way as a contractor from the Water and Sewerage Department was inspecting a dip in the road with a small camera. No one was injured.
Workers tell FOX 2's Randy Wimbley a collapsed sewer riser caused the sinkhole. It eroded the soil underground which caused an 8-inch water line to give way.
Repairs are expected to take weeks.
If a 9-foot sewer line about 38 feet underground is in disrepair because of the sinkhole, that will have to be fixed in addition to the sewer riser and the water line, which will take more time.
Crews tell Wimbley a few cracks stretch out pretty far from the collapse so the sinkhole has some potential to get larger. They are monitoring the situation.

Giant Sinkhole Swallows Mountaintop Church in Ireland (Mar 31)

This aerial photograph of Croagh Patrick taken early yesterday morning clearly shows the sinkhole and the half-swallowed church.
Experts say ‘a spate of sinkholes all over the country’ have had catastrophic consequences along the west coast, leading to a whole herd of cattle vanishing on the Erris penninsula and a holiday home near the village of Louisburgh disappearing without trace.
Emergency services were called to the holy mountain, whose pyramidal peak dominates the skyscape, shortly after 8am this morning (Monday) after a regular pilgrim made the dramatic discovery. Retired teacher, Mr Donnchadh Ó Móráin, from Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, said he normally climbs the 764-meter high mountain twice a month and that when he reached the summit around 7.30am it was – as is often the case – engulfed in rolling mists and he initially ‘didn’t notice the giant crater where the oratory used to be’.
“I was exhausted after the climb and stopped for a few minutes, looking out over Clew Bay, to catch my breath and rub moisturiser into my feet. I thought I was seeing things when I turned around and noticed the oratory had vanished into the ground. So naturally, I knelt down and said a prayer, just in case I was in the middle of some kind of miracle,” Mr Ó Morain told The Mayo News.
He continued: “But when it slowly dawned on me that this was real, I walked towards the spot where the roof of the church was jutting up and discovered a huge crater in which the oratory is now dangling perilously. All I can say is, Saint Patrick would turn in his grave, it is like an abyss.”
Mayo County Council personnel along with local community leaders, a representative of the Clergy as well as members of Mayo Mountain Rescue team were on the scene by lunchtime but such was the size of the sinkhole, they were left speechless, scratching their heads and looking into the hole.
“While we were very aware of the increased instances of sinkholes around the country because of the recent flooding and storms it is unprecedented for one to appear on the peak of a mountain. Recovery of the church hangs in the balance now but we will have more information in the coming days after geological experts assess the situation,” a spokesman for the county council said.
He confirmed, that despite budgetary constraints, the local authority hoped to engage an American Sinkholologist who headed up the famous case in Florida when in February 2013, 37-year-old Jeff Bush went to bed in the quiet residential suburb of east Tampa and disappeared down a sinkhole, sometime during the night.
When questioned, he denied that there would be any attempts to dig for gold, saying he had full faith that Minister of State, Michael Ring, would find the money for the operation somewhere.
A Fáilte Ireland spokesman said this was the second disaster to occur at a significant Discovery Point along the recently launched Wild Atlantic Way. In January a huge section of an iron-age promontory fort in Dingle, County Kerry, had been atop a cliff on Slea head since 500BC, toppled into the sea.

Sinkhole 'Big Enough to Swallow Doubledecker' Opens in Somerset England (Apr 1)

A pub landlord made a shocking discovery this morning when he took his dog out for a walk.
Mike Parkin, landlord at The Inn at Freshford, in Somerset, describes the hole as 'big enough to swallow a double decker bus', saying he discovered it while out walking his dog this morning. But he believes the sinkhole must have opened up over night in the early hours, as he didn’t hear anything.
Mike has confirmed that nobody has been harmed and fortunately, no vehicles had been left in the pub’s car park overnight.
“We’ve already got experts on the scene, who have confirmed that no nearby buildings, structures or roads are at risk.
Efforts toward repairing the 30ft wide hole have already begun, and emergency services have deemed the pub safe to open for business as usual today.
Mike added:
“I’m completely baffled by this."
Freshford resident April O'Lof said: "It is really shocking - you don't expect to see this sort of thing happening in Freshford".

LARGE SINKHOLE DESTROYS LICKING COUNTY RD.
A portion of a central Ohio road will remain closed for the foreseeable future because of a large sinkhole that opened late Thursday night. The 20 ft.-30 ft. sinkhole destroyed a chunk of S. York Road between Morse and Wesleyan Church Road near Pataskala. A representative from the Licking County Engineer's Office began examining the damage at approximately 7 a.m. Friday, when heavy rain finally subsided after falling consistently in the area since Thursday morning. Officials believe that rainfall, combined with wear and tear caused from winter weather as well as the road's position above a creek, likely caused the collapse. A timetable for the repair of the road has not been established.

Gone in just five seconds: Young mother flees with her newborn baby as sinkhole claims her house
7 April 2014
A young mother grabbed her newborn baby and fled after her home just seconds before it vanished into a massive hole.
Anastasia Tatarnikov, 28, thought she was running from an earthquake in the city of Ridder in eastern Kazakhstan.
In total 120 homes have been listed as being at risk and 480 people have been evacuated.
Several homes including Ms Tatarnikova's have completely vanished into the hole.
'I was watching TV and then it started flickering and the lights started swinging. I opened the front door and saw a massive pit appearing in the ground,' she said.
'I ran back into the house and grabbed my son Kiril out of his cot and ran out through the back door. Seconds later the entire house disappeared into the hole.
'I still can't believe that I have lost everything. I don't have any of the official paperwork from my passport through to my son's hospital documents, with his toys and all our clothes. Everything is gone.'
She said local officials had promised to help with rehousing and covering the loss of everything, but so far nothing had happened.

Sinkhole suddenly appears in Staffordshire carpark (April 3rd)
A huge sinkhole appears suddenly in the carpark of a bed and breakfast in north Staffordshire, forcing the business to close
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motoringvideo/10749529/Sinkhole...
Timelapse footage of the view overlooking a bed and breakfast carpark shows a hole in a cordoned-off square becoming bigger and bigger.
Phil Tester, owner of The Laurels in Oakamoor, said the large hole opened up on Thursday morning and now measured more than 10 feet wide and was continuing to expand.
Deep water has gathered at the bottom of the sinkhole, making it difficult to measure the full size of the chasm.
The hole appeared followed drilling work at the property to check damage caused by a nearby landslide last year, that has caused the business to close for two weeks.

A sink hole that opened up next to a Bed and Breakfast in north Staffordshire has been filled in.
The hole first appeared outside The Laurels, in Oakamoor, on Thursday morning and grew to more than three metres (10 ft) wide.
It followed drilling work at the property last week to check damage caused by a nearby landslide last year.
B&B owner Phil Tester said the hole had now been filled in with about 140 tonnes of rock.
Specialists in mine shaft work are expected to inject the rocks with concrete, before laying a concrete cap on the top.
The hole was more than 10ft (3m) wide
Despite the work completed, Mr Tester said the business was not expected to reopen until October.
The sink hole is one of a series of set-backs suffered at the property since a landslip in the area in December.

Massive Sinkhole Threatens Orlando Florida Homes, Residents Evacuated (Apr 19)
The houses are on Chalmer Terrace, near St. Charles Place. One home was evacuated.
“It’s about 25-30 feet across at the surface and we’re estimating between 40 and 60 feet deep,” said geologist Drew Glasbrenner.
All night long crews have been bringing in trucks, one after the other, as they work to fill a massive sinkhole here that opened up without warning Saturday morning.
Giovanni Velocci said his day started with his morning walk.
"This morning I got out about 20 to seven, everything looked normal," Velocci said.
But in the 1.5 hours he was gone, the massive sinkhole opened up right across the street from his home.
When I came back about 8:25, the tree that was next to the house, I don’t see no tree and I thought somebody stole the tree,” Velocci said.
Velocci called the fire department and then noticed that a man was inside the home right next to the sinkhole.
"There was somebody inside the house, I went to see him. He said he had no water," Velocci said. "I said you gotta get out of the house because something is wrong here."

Mistley: Sinkhole opens up at Mistley Quay, Essex, UK
Sinkhole at Mistley Quay being investigated. Picture: Rob Hankey.
Work is under way to repair a sinkhole which has suddenly appeared at an historic quay in north-east Essex.
The large hole opened up at Mistley Quay at around 2pm yesterday, said a spokesman for T W Logistics, the distribution firm that owns the quay.
She said: “We are currently investigating an apparent sinkhole that has appeared.
“We will be undertaking a full assessment over the coming days.”
The spokesman would not be drawn on what vehicles or equipment may have fallen in the sinkhole.
But when asked to comment on reports a driver of a fork-lift truck had been taken to hospital, she said she “had not heard anything about that”.
The dimensions of the sinkhole have not been disclosed.

Giant Sinkhole in Central Florida is Back After Being Filled with Concrete (Apr 23)

A sinkhole at a retirement community in central Florida is back with a vengeance and threatening two homes, reports say.
The ground outside a home in The Villages showed signs of stress in January — and after a bout of rain last week, the ground collapsed on Saturday revealing a giant hole in the ground.
A private contractor, Helicon Properties, celebrated with fanfare after filling the hole with concrete on Sunday.
"No one will ever know a sinkhole was there," Meredith Tucker, one of the contractors, told the Orlando Sentinel, but three days later, the ground collapsed again.
The latest hole in the ground was discovered by a person on an early morning walk, reported The Village News. The hole is now about 65 feet wide and about 70 feet deep.
Residents in The Villages retirement community have their bags packed and ready to go in case the ground gives out entirely.
"We don't know if we are going to have to go or what," said Rich Corr, who lives next to one of the endangered homes, told the newspaper.
No evacuation has been ordered, but in case the sinkhole spreads, Corr and his wife have already packed their bags, he said.
The homes on the edge of the sinkhole have not collapsed and, thankfully, no one is currently living in the homes at this time, according to an Orlando television station, WESH-TV.
The next step is to fill the hole with more dirt and see if it gets any bigger, the contractors told the TV station.

ROAD COLLAPSE LEAVES LORRY STUCK IN A HOLE ON UPPER CHANGI ROAD EAST
UPDATE STATEMENT FROM LTA:
"At about 8.30am on 24 April, a depression appeared at the centre lane of Upper Changi Road East (in direction towards Expo).
"A tipper truck that was passing tilted into the hole. The driver was not injured and there were no other injuries.
"To ensure the safety of motorists, two lanes were immediately closed to traffic while the truck was recovered.
"Traffic has been diverted and LTA has deployed traffic wardens to guide traffic flow. LTA is currently carrying out reinstatement works.
"LTA is investigating the incident. We will also continue to monitor underground construction works in the surrounding area.
"This incident is not expected to impact the construction progress of the Downtown Line 3."
This morning at around 8:45am a lorry fell into a sink hole on Upper Changi Road East near the Jalan Demak.
The road suddenly collapsed as a large tipper truck was driving in the centre lane.
The road was subsequently blocked off and a huge traffic jam was experienced along the road toward Singapore Expo.
There are no reports of injuries and the driver was safely able to get out of his truck. However, the driver, Mr Su, explained that once the truck fell with the road, it could no longer move.
The SCDF arrived and taped off the road and later, another truck was brought in to take the soil out of the tipper truck so that it could be pulled out of the hole.
It is understood that the sink hole occurred on a section of road where digging was occurring under the road for the construction of the Downtown line.
Here are some photos of the incident:

“You’re going down a back alley, there are puddles everywhere, you don’t expect to lose half your truck,” said Robyn Chatlain, a neighbour who captured several pictures of the truck.
Her boyfriend’s vehicle hit the same hole six hours earlier at 10 a.m. The sinkhole was much smaller at the time his vehicle fell in.
“It just looked like a puddle,” said Chris Cole, Chatlain’s boyfriend.
Cole’s car didn’t sustain nearly as much damage as the truck.
“My wheel well was cracked,” he said. “Nothing too bad on mine, but his was pretty damaged.”
Both vehicles were removed by tow trucks.

Inner Mongolia: Herders Swallowed In Sinkhole Due To Mining Activity
Three members of the same herding family were blown away along with their home and belongings, as the ground suddenly caved in under their feet. While no one knows if they are dead or alive, this terrible event revived tensions between Chinese mining companies and ethnic Mongolians about the intensive and destructive exploitation of their grasslands.
Below is an article from Radio Free Asia: http://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/sinkhole-04222014122453.html
Three people are feared dead after a massive sinkhole swallowed their home in the northern Chinese region of Inner Mongolia in a formerly nomadic grassland area that is now home to intensive mining operations, residents said on Tuesday [22 April 2014].
Monday's [21 April 2014] cave-in in the region's Alxa (in Chinese, Alashan) League Left Banner, saw the ground fall to a depth of at least 50 meters (164 feet), eyewitnesses told RFA. "It was very sudden," a resident of Alxa's Alunbag (in Chinese, Alunbage) township said. "They haven't even managed to dig the people out yet." "I think that it goes down very deep; those three people are unlikely to still be alive," the resident, Urchichige, said. "Their house must have collapsed."
He blamed a local iron-ore mining operation for the accident. "It was definitely to do with the mining," he said. "The iron-ore mine has hollowed out the earth. It's been dug hollow down there." "None of us herders knew how hollow it had become, or how far it extended," Urchichige said. "We didn't know they were tunneling because we didn't see it."
He said the mine extended as far as 200 meters (656 feet) below the surface, and that local people had already complained of disturbances from dynamiting underground. "It's pretty bad when you're trying to sleep at night," he said.
The three people swallowed by the subsidence were from three different generations of the same herding family, according to posts on social media sites. "Three generations were swallowed up as they lay dreaming, along with their house, their car, their tractor, a sheepfold and a few cattle," according to a Twitter-like post from user @Uighunfan.
"Three ambulances and medical staff from Jilantai township are at the scene, but they have only managed to save a few cows," the post said.
Repeated calls to the ruling Chinese Communist Party committee in Alunbag township, the Alxa League government propaganda department and the Alxa Left Banner—the administrative equivalent of a county—government rang unanswered or went unconnected during office hours on Tuesday [22 April 2014].
A local resident surnamed Wang said the accident had happened on a hill near her house. "I heard they hadn't found them yet; I heard they died," she said.
Clashes between Chinese companies and ethnic Mongolian herders protesting the exploitation of their grasslands are increasingly common in the region, which borders the independent country of Mongolia. Rights activists say grasslands on which the herding communities depend for a living are constantly being taken over for mining and forestry exploitation, putting an end to the herders' traditional way of life. Ethnic Mongolians, who make up almost 20 percent of Inner Mongolia's population of 23 million, also complain of environmental destruction and unfair development policies in the region. Last week, Chinese authorities detained a group of herders from Chagaan-oboo Gachaa in Heshigten Banner (in Chinese, Keshiketeng Qi) to the north of Chifeng city after they staged a sit-in protest in front of the Inner Mongolia Yindu Mining Co.
Herders told RFA that the company had been dumping toxic waste onto their grazing lands in since January, causing the death of livestock. Intensive exploitation of coal seams in the past few decades to meet skyrocketing energy demands has undermined the geological structure of the earth in many locations across China, investigative journalists say.
On Aug. 15, 2011, the whole of Pangpangta village in northern Shanxi province was swallowed up by subsidence. Photos of Pangpangta village posted on Chinese news websites and bulletin boards showed houses fallen into chasms in the earth, huge cracks along a village street, and collapsed and damaged buildings similar to a scene after an earthquake. Last June, authorities in the central province of Henan sent in riot police to disperse thousands of local residents protesting subsidence linked to a local mining operation. More than 3,000 villagers from Henan's Xuchang county said local mining operations have devastated the ground near their homes, swallowed up a road, and left cracks in their houses.

Sinkholes Opening Up After Tsunami
A sinkhole is widening in Car Nicobar, but the authorities are clueless about its potential dangers. Credit: Malini Shankar/IPS.
CAR NICOBAR, India, May 2 2014 (IPS) - While the United States Geological Survey (USGS) is sparing no effort to fill a rapidly widening sinkhole in Florida since Apr. 23, India’s Geological Survey has closed its field station in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands where sinkholes have sprung up all over as an aftermath of the 2004 Asian tsunami.
The administration in this popular tourist destination in the Bay of Bengal may be prepared for another tsunami. But it seems clueless about these holes in the ground that can sometimes cave in or lead to other geological events like hot springs, water spouts, natural gas emissions or even cracks in the subterranean magma chambers.
Islanders told IPS that sinkholes have appeared all over Nicobar. Whether that is also the case with the Andamans remains a matter of speculation as there is no official documentation of it, nor did the administration facilitate this writer’s photo assignment to visit the geologically volatile islands.
IPS discovered and photographed sinkholes in three Nicobar Islands – Car Nicobar, Kamorta and Campbell Bay.
“Car Nicobar is full of sinkholes after the tsunami. Even though I grew up here, our parents are now petrified of us swimming near the beach,” says Dr. Christina Rossetti, a local of Car Nicobar who works at a government-run hospital here.
Indian Air Force officers at Car Nicobar documented a water spout in April 2013 which shot up from a sinkhole to 1,000 metres in the sky over the Bay of Bengal.
Tsunami survivors in Car Nicobar also told IPS about water spouts that injured their eyes during the disaster.
Sinkholes can be either the cause or the consequence of quicksand, hot springs, geysers, natural gas emissions or water spouts. Initially the surface starts collapsing.

Large Sinkhole in St. Paul Minnesota (May 9)
The line that failed is a 54-inch gravity-flow concrete pipe laid in 1989 that collects sewage from as far as Forest Lake and directs it to the Met Council’s Metropolitan wastewater treatment plant on the Mississippi River in St. Paul, the largest plant in the state.
The break occurred about 2 a.m. Friday on the boulevard in the east corner of Phalen Boulevard and Johnson Parkway, said Tim O’Donnell, a spokesman for Metropolitan Council Environmental Services.
Although it was unclear what caused the break, it appeared that the top of the (concrete) pipe had corroded and collapsed under the weight of the waterlogged earth above it, O’Donnell said.
The result was a crater about 25 feet deep and measuring 25 feet across.

70-foot Sinkhole Opens in Florida Parking Lot (May 29)
When it first developed Thursday morning (May 29) in front of a Publix in Winter Haven - outside Tampa, the hole was just 30 feet wide and less than five feet deep.
By the afternoon, geologists and engineers say the depression had spread to 70 feet wide and 15 feet deep and it has shown no signs of stopping.
The collapse of the earth beneath the parking lot has caused the pavement to buckle and warp dozens of yards away from the center of the hole.
The property manager cordoned off the area while geologists examined the bedrock with sonar to determine how much the sinkhole was likely to continue to grow.

Giant 16ft SINKHOLE uncovered by highways engineers called to inspect a pothole
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/giant-16ft-sinkhole-uncovered-...
Highway engineers have repaired a giant hole that opened up in a road in Somerset.
The chasm, measuring 16ft across and more than 11ft deep, was found near Wells.
Workers quickly undertook a safety study before filling the hole, which was in the middle of the B3135 Roemead Road at Green Ore.
Nearly 200 tonnes of stone were used to repair the damage. Drainage and re-surfacing work was then able to take place, allowing the road to reopen late last week.
Harvey Siggs of Somerset County Council said it was unclear what caused the massive hole.
"I'd like to praise the highways staff and contractors involved in this repair project," Mr Siggs said.
"Our roads have been hit hard following the severe weather over the last couple of years but our teams have worked exceptionally hard throughout.
"Somerset County Council repaired over 25,000 potholes during the last financial year which is nearly 70 every day - thankfully extreme incidents like this one are very rare."
Roads across Somerset were badly damaged during the winter, which resulted in hundreds of homes being flooded.

A massive sinkhole opened up near an office complex in Jonesville, Florida on Monday, the Gainesville Sun reports.
Aerial images posted on the Alachua County Sherriff's Office Facebook page show a gaping hole in a field next to a retention pond. According to the Gainesville Sun, the sinkhole was on private property, although few other details were immediately available. Witnesses at the scene said the sinkhole opened near an office complex.

A sinkhole has opened up behind the Campus USA Credit Union headquarters near Newberry Road in Jonesville, although Alachua County Environmental Protection Director Chris Bird said Monday it doesn't appear to be an "imminent hazard."
The sinkhole is located behind the credit union on private land known as the Jonesville Plaza property, for which Tioga Town Center LLC is the managing partner, company President Gil Levy said. The property is up for sale.
Levy said the sinkhole was scheduled to be taken care of this morning at 7:30 by a contractor. He told The Sun he knows of two sinkholes in the retention pond by the fence line of the property, which they've had to deal with repeatedly over the past year.
"It's a problematic issue and it's been plugged a number of times," Levy said.

WHITE COTTAGE, OHIO — Never mind the March 1 sinkhole that subsided less than 40 yards from Mike Lane’s home, it took another, thousands of square feet in size, to open up late Tuesday night beneath the Stiers Lane residence for the federal government to free up funds to relocate Lane’s family of six.
Almost half the home was teetering over an expanding hole Wednesday night. Bo Keck, director of the Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency, ordered Lane to stay out of the home until it has been deemed safe to enter.
“My whole life is in that house,” Lane said, looking over a makeshift barricade that had been set up to keep people out of the affected area. “They told us to move out, but how could I move our stuff without any money? Where am I supposed to store our things?”
An unspecified amount of financial assistance is on the way for the Lanes. The emergency money, granted late Wednesday through the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, will go toward temporary housing and relocation costs. The amount will be dependent on the type of housing found by local EMA and Red Cross personnel, explained Mark Bruce, Ohio Department of Natural Resources spokesperson. Keck said he planned to meet with Red Cross workers early this morning to discuss suitable housing.
An attempt to move the trailer to a safe site will also be made on OSMRE’s tab, should a willing contractor be located, explained Bruce.
“The landowners have to provide a place for it,” Bruce said. “We’ll pay to move it there.”
Before Tuesday night’s massive sinkhole, EMA and ODNR officials had repeatedly said the funds were being held pending a federal review of the area. Gov. John Kasich’s office also was notified of the developing situation, Keck said.
Damages to the home have not been assessed. The plumbing has been torn away, and cracks can be seen along the bottom edge of the home where the ground has given way. The home is uninsured, and Mike worries that it won’t be above ground by week’s end.
As for the 12 other Stiers Lane residents living just a stone’s throw from the Lane home, no relief has been doled out yet. In fact, other than the April 25 warning to vacate, no follow-up contact has been made at all, said Kelly Landerman, who lives in the house closest to Lane’s with her husband and four children.
Landerman was watching TV around 11 p.m. Tuesday when her trailer began shaking uncontrollably. When she went outside the next morning, she saw a hole more than 20 feet wide and nearly 100 feet long beginning to consume the Lane home.
“I’m scared,” Landerman said. “I’m here with my four children. I don’t know which way to turn. ... I’m on fixed income. So for right now, I’m staying put. That’s all we can do.”

CCFR fire truck falls into sinkhole early Saturday

Sinkhole opens up near 4th Street restaurant
A Calloway County Fire-Rescue tanker truck fell into this sinkhole near the Hihburger Inn restaurant on Fourth Street early Saturday morning. NO one was injured, but officials say it was a jarring experience for the passengers.
Posted: Monday, June 9, 2014 10:40 am
It’s not unusual for firefighters to drive a truck to Renfroe’s Hihburger Inn on Fourth Street in Murray for breakfast – especially after a late-night call.
“It’s kind of a tradition,” said Calloway County Fire-Rescue Chief Tommy Morgan.
What is unusual, Morgan said Sunday, is when that fire truck falls into the pavement when a giant sinkhole forms underneath it.
Believe it or not, that’s what happened to a fire-rescue crew early Saturday morning. Morgan said a crew of firefighters were on their way back to Murray after a 5 a.m. call. They were driving what they call Tanker 1 – the department’s largest structure truck. When the driver pulled into the Hihburger parking lot, the pavement and earth around the tires fell in around it, making for a hard, fast landing for the truck and punctured tires. No one was injured.
“The poor guy driving didn’t know what happened,” Morgan said. “He called me and didn’t know what to say.”
Murray Road Superintendent Ron Allbritten said the fall was likely caused by decades of stress over a private storm drain. He said it didn’t appear to be a washed out culvert caused by recent rains. Either way, he said, it will be the property owner’s responsibility to repair.
Morgan said his crews were out just a few hours later clearing roads after Saturday’s heavy storms. It was a big day for the volunteer crew.
“I guess when your morning starts out that bad, it’s not going to be much better that night,” he laughed.

Sinkhole swallows part of Metro bus in Corryville
CINCINNATI —A Cincinnati Metro bus was nearly swallowed by a sinkhole Thursday night.
Cincinnati police said the sinkhole opened in the road on Shields Street in Corryville about 9:15 p.m.
Metro officials said the driver was the only person on the bus when the sinkhole opened up.
It appeared as if the sinkhole opened behind the bus. The bus's rear tires were stuck in the hole.
Damage was visible on the sides of the bus.
Police said the sinkhole measured 10 feet long by 15 feet wide and was 20 feet deep.
An industrial-strength tow truck and crane arrived at the scene to remove the bus from the sinkhole about 10:30 p.m.
The driver said she went over the spot in the pavement and it gave way behind the back wheels of the bus. Crews had been inspecting a buckle in the road about an hour before the sinkhole developed.
A Metro spokeswoman said the bus had just completed a layover at the Cincinnati Zoo and the driver was about to return to the garage when the sinkhole opened.
She said the bus was damaged bus able to be driven away from the scene.
Police said the bus was on top of a sewer line and was not leaking fuel.
Officers said that sewer workers will have to pump the sewage out of the sinkhole before they can repair the line and fill the hole.
Shields Street was closed near Vine Street by the Cincinnati Zoo and the Veterans' Affairs Hospital.

Sinkhole opens on St. Mary’s Avenue, gulps car; passer-by rescues driver
Posted: Sunday, June 22, 2014 8:30 am
By Nick Piastowski / World-Herald staff writer
A woman was injured early Sunday just west of downtown when her car fell into a sinkhole.
Kambry Davis of Lincoln was driving west on St. Mary’s Avenue between 22nd and 23rd Streets when the pavement collapsed under her vehicle, a white Pontiac. Omaha police said the collapse was caused by a leak in a water line that Metropolitan Utilities District said is privately owned.
Andrew McCarthy, who had been walking along St. Mary’s, was able to pull Davis from her car before police arrived.
“We just walked up from the Old Market, heard a little crack, didn’t think anything of it,” McCarthy said. He heard someone yelling from the car and saw Davis in her passenger seat.
“I took my sandals off and couldn’t feel the bottom of the water. So I just came on the other side of the vehicle and pulled her out.” McCarthy said Davis had scrapes on her forehead.
She was taken to Creighton University Medical Center for treatment of a head injury, not considered severe. A hospital spokesman said she has since been released.

Cincinnati - Sinkhole that a Bus fell into will take a month to fix.
http://www.19actionnews.com/story/25856127/avondale-sinkhole-repair...
Traffic has been detoured around the Cincinnati Zoo while street crews continue to repair a massive sinkhole that formed last week in Avondale.
The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC) said a safety fence was put up around the perimeter of the site, located on East Shields Street, to prevent public access to the work zone.
A Metro bus drove over the buckled area at about 9 p.m. last Thursday, causing the sinkhole to open up. No passengers were on the bus at the time, and no injuries were reported.
MSDGC said in addition to recent traffic detours, odor control is also being addressed.
Due to the depth of the sinkhole and the 16-foot diameter of the shaft, MSDGC said crews installed retaining walls and structural metal "ribs" into the area. The process makes the work difficult and slow, but is critical for safety.
MSDGC estimates repairs will likely take a month to complete, citing the extensive nature of the repair process, the depth of the collapsed pipe and need for safety precautions.

Large sinkhole forces closing of Akron road
http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/large-sinkhole-forces-closing-o...
Akron has blocked off Kling Street near the intersection of Rankin Street after a large sinkhole, about 20 feet long, 15 feet wide and 12 feet deep, was discovered.
“We want to make sure nobody gets hurt,” said Public Service Director John Moore, who said a resident alerted the city to the problem by calling the 311 information line about 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Moore said the hole contains sewer lines and has no water running through it. He said he didn’t see any gas lines inside.
City highway maintenance supervisor Jim Aitken, who was called to the scene, said he would have to check the sewer lines up and down the road before he could determine the cause of the collapse. He said the street will be fixed, but not overnight.
Daniel Hall, 22, who lives in the block, said cars had been driving on the street all day and he thought there was something wrong with the cars because of the clinking sounds he heard.
He was sitting on his porch at Kling and Cross streets when he saw a green pickup truck come to a halt.
“He got out of his truck and said there’s a hole in the street,” Hall said. “I thought it was a pothole and walked over, and the next thing we knew, it started spreading and pieces of concrete kept falling and it started caving in even more. It’s kind of scary; I’m glad I used my one passage of the day.”

2 Injured After Driving Into Roadway Washout and are Run Over (Jul 1)
San Juanita Pineda, 41, said she and her 15-year-old son, Benjamin Hernandez, were headed north on Thomas Road just past McDonald Road south of Burlington when they came upon a portion of the roadway that had been completely washed out. Their car fell into the sinkhole.
Pineda, who works as a carrier delivering the Daily Herald, said she and her son were working about 3:45 a.m. when they found themselves below ground and trapped in the vehicle. She was at the wheel of her uncle's Ford Taurus, she said.
"It was dark, it was pitch black, and all of a sudden I'm in the hole," Pineda said. "The impact was pretty hard. My car turned off completely. I had no emergency lights."
The sinkhole was 10 feet in diameter and deep enough that the Ford Taurus was completely below ground level, Kane County sheriff's authorities said.
Benjamin, who just finished his freshman year at Larkin High School, suffered a spinal fracture, a broken rib and a broken jaw, and he lost some teeth in the crash, his mother said. He is being treated at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon. He remains in intensive care.
"We're going to give it time to see if he's going to need surgery," Pineda said. "We don't know if he's able to get up and walk."
Pineda said she's having chest and back pains as a result of the accident.
Mother and son were on their way to deliver their fourth newspaper of the day when the accident happened on a dark stretch of road. Pineda said she was driving about 15 mph, having just left a newspaper in a mailbox, before the car was swallowed by the sinkhole.
"I was conscious. My son, I had to yell at him a couple of times (to get him to respond)," she said.
Pineda said the air bags went off and she had trouble finding her cellphone. After a few minutes, she was able to locate it and dial 911.
Sheriff's deputies were sent to the scene about 3:50 a.m., but before they arrived a Chevrolet pickup truck drove over the Ford Taurus.
The driver of the pickup truck, Irvin Moreno, 25, of Maple Park, was treated and released at the scene, authorities said.
"While I was talking to 911, this truck flies over me," she said. "About three or four minutes later, (the driver of the truck) walks up to the hole. He asked if anybody was in the car."
Fire personnel pulled Pineda out fairly quickly, but it took about 90 minutes to free her son afterward because they had to remove the roof, she said. The car is totaled, she said.
Pineda was treated at Kishwaukee Hospital in Sycamore. Her son was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and then transferred to Loyola.
Benjamin, the youngest of her four children, has been helping Pineda deliver newspapers while on summer break, she said. Pineda, a single mother, said she also has a factory job.
"He would always ask me, 'Do you want me to come with you?' And I would say, 'If you want to,'" she said. "Now I feel like I will probably panic with any hole in the road, or going over a bump."
Sheriff's authorities said it is unknown exactly why that section of roadway was washed out, but it appears to be related to the overnight storms.
Thomas Road between Middleton and McDonald roads will be closed indefinitely due to the damage to the roadway, officials said.
