Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Liberia: ArcelorMittal Train Derails, 30 Buckets of Iron Ore Wasted

The locomotive of 90 coaches was transporting iron ore from the mine in Yekepa, Nimba County to the Port of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County for export when it derailed in District 2, Nimba County. No casualty has been recorded.

Zuluyee Town, Nimba County – One of ArcelorMittal locomotives transporting iron ore from Yekepa to Buchanan Port on early Saturday morning derailed, leaving about 30 coaches (buckets) of iron ore pouring to the ground and part of the rail damaged.

The accident occurred between the towns of Zuluyee and Tondin at about 4 a.m. in District 2, Nimba County.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established. It is, however, believed that there a mechanical fault developed between Sanniquellie and Ganta region.
There is no death or injury reported in the accident

Buckets the train was carrying were about 90 in number. The rest that left were carried to Buchanan.
Ms. Amanda Hill, Corporate Communications Manager of ArcelorMittal Liberia, told reporters that the company will come out with a statement and could therefore not comment further.
The damage of the railroad will cause the transporting of iron ore to be suspended.

This is the first accident to have occurred along the railway since ArcelorMital began operations. However, trains belonging to Mittal had in recent times killed two persons in separate locations that the causes of their encounter with the heavy machinery are yet to be established.
It can be recalled that a 40-year-old Guinean was killed by the train about two months ago while on his way from hunting for frog in the Zuluyee area.

In the Bunadin area in Loa Clan where the railroad passes, the body of another man was discovered there recently and it was established that he was killed by a train. These incidents occurred during the night.

Train derailment causes big fire in downtown Phoenix

    Jun 19, 2020

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Investigators are trying to figure out what led up to a train derailment and fire on Friday evening in downtown Phoenix.
The big plume of black smoke could be seen through the downtown area. Flames were shooting out of the cars for more than an hour.

Fire crews were called out around 7:30 p.m. to the area of Ninth Avenue and Buchanan Street, which is south of Jefferson Street. When they got there, they saw at least two train cars on fire. However, there wasn't much they could do to save the train.
"They are generators on wheels, so spraying water directly on the car is a bad idea. It's not what we do," said Capt. Todd Keller with the Phoenix Fire Department.

    (Source: 3TV/CBS 5)

Fire crews believe an engine caught fire after five of the train cars derailed, causing a diesel leak. They also got information that 11 cars back of the fire, there was ethanol in some of the cars so crews didn't want the fire to spread there. So, firefighters had to stay back and let the fire burn itself out. They protected nearby buildings by making sure the flames didn't jump.
"It's imperative we take our time with this," said Keller.
A Union Pacific spokesman said four box cars carrying plywood derailed while leaving a nearby rail yard. The locomotive caught fire. It's unclear why the train derailed.

Emergency responders took over about a square mile so they're asking everyone to avoid the area. Approximately 60 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames while even more crew members are managing the hazardous materials. The fire was put out around 9 p.m. No injuries have been reported and no buildings have been damaged.

Goods train derails, catches fire over bridge across Musi river

    June 25, 2020 14:13 IST

A major fire ensued in four wagons each with 65 kl of diesel.
Four oil tankers of a goods train caught fire when it derailed between Surareddypalem and Tangutur in Prakasam district on the Howrah-Chennai main line in the wee hours of Thursday.
As the train from Gangineni in Secunderabad railway division carrying inflammable substance approached the bridge across the Musi river, it jumped off the rails, severing links with 45 other wagons. There were no casualties.
A major fire ensued in four wagons each with 65 kl of diesel.

Five fire tenders — two from Ongole and one each from Nellore, Kandukur and Kondepi — fought the flames for over three hours and brought it under control, Prakasam District Fire Officer S. Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu. “We were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other wagons,” he said after completing the fire fighting operation in time.
As the train derailed, two wagons fell into the dry riverbed with a loud sound, while another was left hanging. The fourth one was close to the railway track. However, 45 other wagons did not suffer any damage and proceeded towards Chennai later. Railway officials rushed to the spot to ascertain the cause of the mishap.

Train derails in Livingston Parish due to tree on tracks, knocks out power lines
    June 25, 2020 7:11 AM

WALKER- A train carrying non-toxic chemicals derailed at Walker's Corbin Avenue and Florida Boulevard/Highway 190 on Thursday morning.
The train derailed shortly before 6 a.m. due to a tree on the tracks. The cars also knocked down power lines as they left the tracks, causing outages in the area and creating a potential Hazmat situation.
Officials acted swiftly, closing Highway 190 and Corbin Avenue (both eastbound and westbound lanes) to address the situation

Walker Mayor Jimmy Watson elaborated on the situation, telling WBRZ that one of the four derailed train cars was carrying carbon dioxide, and the other three were, at one point, carrying ammonia, but the ammonia was removed prior to the derailment.
Officials say the main concern is that a live power line was pulled down during the incident. As a precaution, one person was evacuated from the area.
Louisiana State Police, Entergy, and the Department of Environmental Quality are on the scene, with State Police leading the response to the incident.
As Entergy deals with the live wire and power outage, DEQ is monitoring the air quality and reporting that the air quality appears to be clear at this time.
DEQ officials say, "Preliminary readings are non-detect for any airborne substances of concern. One refrigerated car is leaking non-toxic carbon dioxide which should dissipate quickly. We are still assessing the situation."

Downburst Derails 86-Car Train In Texas

A mile-long swath of 80+ mph wind was likely the cause of a train derailment of 86 cars in Texas on Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Midland, TX confirmed the information Wednesday afternoon. The train was carrying cargo at the time.

The meteorologists’ report goes on to say that all of the damage was oriented in the same direction. That statement indicates the storm damage was likely due to straight-line wind, rather than a tornado. This swath of wind damage was estimated to be a little more than one mile in length with wind between 80 and 100 mph!

The train derailment damage occurred in northeastern Mitchell County, TX. A separate storm about nine miles southeast of Colorado City, TX caused damage in a cotton field. The storm “toppled a center pivot irrigation system, about 750 feet long” according to the NWS Midland office. The peak estimated wind with that storm is believed to be 65-70 mph.

This goes to show that severe thunderstorms are very powerful and can do similar damage compared to a tornado. In the short video below, WeatherNation Meteorologist Meredith Garofalo explains what straight line wind is and why it is so dangerous.

Train derails on Arizona bridge that collapses, catches fire

    July 29 2020

Officials say a freight train traveling on a bridge that spans a lake in a Phoenix suburb has derailed, setting the bridge ablaze and partially collapsing the structure

PHOENIX (AP) — A freight train traveling on a bridge that spans a lake in a Phoenix suburb derailed Wednesday, setting the bridge ablaze and partially collapsing the structure, officials said.

Video images showed huge flames and thick black smoke rising into the air and three train cars in a park next to Tempe Town Lake.

None of the train's crew members were hurt but there was a report of someone suffering from smoke inhalation, said Tim McMahan, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad. He said he did not know how many crew members were aboard when the train derailed.

Fire officials in the suburb of Tempe said the derailment happened at about 6 a.m. and that about 90 firefighters were at the scene.

Between eight and 10 of the train's cars caught fire, McMahan said. Several carried lumber and the three that fell to the ground beneath the bridge were tank cars.

Two were carrying cyclohexanone, a pale and oily liquid that is toxic and flammable. McMahan said a third tank car was carrying a “rubber material" but did not provide further details.

McMahan said the tank cars were not involved in the ensuing blaze and it appeared none of them had any leaks.

Investigators with the Federal Railroad Administration were dispatched to start a preliminary investigation, the agency said in a statement.

The bridge had its annual inspection earlier this month, McMahan said.

Fire witness Camille Kimball told AZFamily.com she was riding her bike in the park below the bridge minutes before the derailment.

“I turned around to look and got the fright of my life,” Kimball said. “Now there’s fire pouring into the lake from the middle of the bridge. ... It looks like a scene from hell, truly.”

The 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) Tempe Town Lake is is a popular recreation spot for jogging, cycling and boating and close to Arizona State University.

A high-speed train has derailed in the Portuguese district of Coimbra, killing two and injuring at least 30 others.

The train was travelling north from Lisbon to Braga, with scheduled stops in the cities of Coimbra and Porto.

However, at about 15:30 (14:30GMT) it crashed into a railway maintenance machine in the town of Soure.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that he offered "his condolences to the families and friends of those killed" in this "serious accident".

The country's national relief operations authority CNOS told Reuters news agency that emergency services were at the scene.

A spokesman said there were 163 rescue personnel, including firefighters, and two medical helicopters.

There were 240 passengers on board the Alfa Pendular train, which is the fastest in Portugal, they said.

A witness told Portuguese newspaper Diário de Noticias that there was panic inside the train at the time of the crash.

"I thought I was going to die," they said. "The carriage took about 10 or 15 seconds to stop. People were screaming and lying on the ground. Then the carriage started to fill with dust.

Strong winds ‘likely’ toppled train in western Oklahoma

    Updated: 3:14 PM CDT Aug 11, 2020

A BNSF Railways train derailment in western Oklahoma was “likely” caused by wind gusts of up to 70 mph, National Weather Service meteorologist Phillip Ware said Tuesday.

The strong winds and the derailment both occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday, Ware said.

“It appears very likely that they were related,” Ware said.

The train was traveling from Amarillo, Texas, to northwestern Ohio when 16 cars derailed, according to BNSF spokesperson Courtney Wallace.

“There are no injuries to the crew and none of the derailed cars contain hazmat. We have crews on site working to restore both main tracks. The current time for reopening is undetermined,” Wallace said in a statement.

Ware said the Oklahoma storm was not part of the derecho that swept across the Midwest on Monday with 100 mph winds and power similar to an inland hurricane, blowing over trees, flipping vehicles and causing widespread property damage from Chicago into Indiana and Michigan.

“The storms we had (Monday) night originated over Kansas and the western Texas Panhandle and just congealed over our area,” Ware said.

She said the derailed tanker spilt the acid but TransNamib's emergency response plan was activated immediately and the spillage was contained.

No injuries occurred but four metres of rail tracks were damaged and repair work was initiated.

“TransNamib expects the repairs to be finalised today and for operations to continue. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused,” Raubenheimer said

Llangennech: Diesel spill after train derails catching fire

    August 27 2020

A freight train carrying diesel has derailed and burst into flames, with fuel spilling into a nearby river.

About 300 people were evacuated from their homes in Llangennech, near Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, during the "major incident" on Wednesday night.

Natural Resources Wales said it was not safe to try and contain a diesel spill which had gone into the River Loughor.

A driver and engineer, onboard the train, were not injured and are being supported, owners DB Cargo UK said.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the driver had noticed something was wrong with the train, which was travelling from Milford Haven. It then derailed and the fire started.

The blaze was reported at about 23:20 BST on Wednesday and police said it had been declared a "major incident" due to the "initial risk of harm" to people nearby.

People living within 800m of the fire described seeing "plumes of smoke" and seeing flames from the tracks, when they were evacuated from their homes. They have since been allowed back.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said it was carrying out a preliminary examination and gathering evidence.

Puma Energy confirmed the third party-operated train was carrying its fuel from Milford Haven, in Pembrokeshire, to Theale, near Reading, when three tanks caught fire.

"Our immediate priority is to work with the emergency services, Network Rail, environmental agencies and the train operator to ensure public safety is maintained and any possible environmental impacts are mitigated," a spokesman said.

Puma Energy has not yet confirmed how much fuel the train was carrying, or how much caught fire.

The site of the derailment is close to the Loughor Estuary, which is part of the Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation.

Natural Resources Wales said it was "clear some of the diesel is already making its way into the nearby River Loughor".

But Aneurin Cox, duty incident manager for Natural Resources Wales, said it was "not currently safe" for workers to get close enough to try and contain the spill while the fire was burning.

"Once it's safe to do so, we will work with our partners to fully assess the environmental impact and advise Network Rail when the clean-up of the site can begin," he said.

"We will also be keeping local angling and cockling groups informed of the latest situation."

The cockle beds in the Burry Inlet - worked by 35 licensed pickers - have been closed following the diesel spill.

Robert Griffiths, secretary of the Burry Inlet Handgatherers Association, said he had been contacted by fisheries officers following a meeting of a number of agencies which monitor the beds.

Mr Griffiths said the extent of any diesel pollution was still being assessed and it was hoped the closure would last only a few days.

'Black, black clouds of smoke in the air'

Louise Perkins, who lives close to the railway line, said she grabbed some stuff and rushed from her home with her children, aged seven, 12 and 19, in the middle of the night.

The 38-year-old was up late watching TV when she heard an enormous bang: "There was this massive fire and black smoke.

"As we left it was just fire - you could see like balls of it puffing up, and the smell... the smell of diesel.

"It was just everywhere, and there were just black, black clouds of smoke in the air." continues...

Freight Train Carrying Diesel Catches Fire, Derails in UK

LONDON (AP) — About 300 people in Wales had to be evacuated after a freight train carrying large amounts of diesel caught fire and derailed, British Transport Police said Thursday.

Officials said two employees onboard managed to raise the alarm and escaped without injury. The fire near Llanelli, in south Wales, was reported close to midnight Wednesday. Three of the train’s cars were still ablaze Thursday afternoon and people were asked to steer clear of the area while firefighters battled the blaze.

Police declared a major incident and asked hundreds of people to move to a nearby school and community center because there was still a “substantial risk” within the immediate area.

“What we know is a freight train, carrying large amounts of diesel oil, caught fire and a number of its carriages also derailed,” Supt. Andy Morgan said. “Thankfully, despite the clear danger, no injuries have been reported.”

“The fire was significant due to the quantity of fuel it was carrying and presented a possible danger to the wider community,” he added.

Authorities were investigating what caused the derailment and resulting fire.

Four wagons of goods train derails near Mathura
    UPDATED: AUG 30 2020, 18:10 IST

Rail traffic on the Mathura-Delhi route was disrupted as four wagons of a goods train derailed between Vrindaban Road and Ajhai railway stations here on Sunday, officials said.
According to Northern Central Railway’s Agra Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) S K Srivastav, the Ghaziabad-bound train was coming from Chhattisgarh’s Bhilai and its wagons derailed around 10 am. The DCM said it will take four to five hours to clear the rail line.

Meanwhile, passenger trains have been diverted to the Aligarh route, he said

Iron bar-laden wagons have also disturbed an overhead electrification line as a few polls were damaged due to the impact, he added

North Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Ajit Kumar said at this state, it is difficult to tell the cause of the incident.

He said an inquiry will be conducted by railway officials to ascertain the reason behind it. The official said an operation to clear the rail line is under way under the guidance of senior officers of the department.

Derailed train in Scotland hit 'washed-out rocks and gravel'

    00:09, Sep 11 2020

An investigation into a train crash in northeastern Scotland last month that killed three people has found that the train struck a pile of washed-out rock and gravel before derailing, according to an interim report released Thursday.

The driver, a conductor and a passenger died when the ScotRail train came off the tracks near the coastal town of Stonehaven on August 12. The first of the derailed carriages is expected to be removed from the site on Thursday.

Investigators said “a significant contributing factor” to the derailment was heavy rainfall washing material from adjoining slopes, or earthworks, onto the tracks.

Network Rail, which is government-owned and responsible for the UK’s train tracks, set out plans in the report on how to reduce the risk of such landslips but acknowledged it cannot afford to strengthen all “substandard” track-side slopes.

We are all aware that we are increasingly seeing more incidents of severe weather and, as the report published today shows, earthworks and drainage infrastructure – some of which are more than 150 years old – prove to be a real challenge as the country experiences more heavy rainfall and flooding," Network Rail chief executive Andrew Haines said.

Train derails near Hope, 20 cars off tracks

Last Updated Sep 14, 2020 at 10:11 am PDT

HOPE (NEWS 1130) – A CN train has derailed near Hope.

The company says the derailment happened early Monday morning, with preliminary information indicating “at least 20 railcars carrying potash derailed off of a rail bridge.”

It doesn’t look like anyone’s been hurt in the derailment, and CN says there are also no reports of fires or dangerous goods involved.

“CN would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused by this incident and thanks the first responders present at the scene,” the company says in an email to NEWS 1130.

It’s still unclear what caused the train to derail.

Witnesses tells NEWS 1130 they saw a large police presence while driving past the derailment Monday.

“There’s a massive train wreck, like piled up train cars,” one commuter describes. “I mean, it’s a s*** show. We were shocked.”

The derailment is not impacting traffic but is a visual distraction to anyone driving west of Hope by the Hunter Creek exit on Highway 1.

Train derails, catches on fire in Gwinnett County overnight after Hurricane Delta-related storms wash out tracks

    Oct 11 2020

The heavy rains from Hurricane Delta that moved through metro Atlanta this weekend washed out train tracks in Lilburn early Sunday morning, causing a train to derail, several rail cars to catch on fire and, as a result, prompting an evacuation of homes in the surrounding area.

Lt. Justin Wilson said firefighters were called to the scene of the derailment, which was on the CSX line near Main Street and Camp Creek Parkway, at 1:43 a.m. A 9-1-1 caller said two CSX employees were trying to get out of the train and that it was taking on water.

Firefighters were already in the area looking into reports of a woods fire on Bailey Drive, which they discovered was related to the train derailment.

"On arrival, crews found what would later be confirmed as 38 railcars derailed between Main Street NW and Rockbridge Road NW," Wilson said. "A Unified Command with representatives from Gwinnett Fire and Lilburn Police was established at Lilburn City Park. Several railcars were engulfed in flames shortly after arrival between Jon Jeff Drive NW and Bailey Drive SW."

Lilburn police were able to pull the train's conductor and engineer to safety near Main Street and they were taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, hazmat crews began atmospheric monitoring for hazardous materials. Wilson said they did encounter some problems with initiating spill control measures because of a swollen creek.

Train derails in Georgia, homeowners forced to evacuate

LILIBURN, Georgia (CNN) - Crews in Georgia had to evacuate several homes and take two workers to the hospital after an early morning train derailment.

Firefighters said 38 cars derailed just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday in Liliburn.

Police officers helped the train’s engineer and conductor out of the locomotive. The injuries are said to be minor.

Several of the cars burst into flames and there was a chemical spill which forced homes to be evacuated. Fire officials said rains from Hurricane Delta may have played a part in the derailment.

Residents are now back in their homes. The fire department says CSX is working with environmental cleanup groups to minimize the impact on the environment.

TRAIN CAR DERAILS INTO BACKYARD OF CENTRE TOWNSHIP HOME

    October 26 2020

Kellee Younker of Centre Township was having a normal day Monday afternoon when she left her house to pick her daughter up from school. Arriving back home on Railroad Road, she noticed something odd behind her house. An oil tanker car crashed into her backyard.

Younker is used to seeing train cars across her backyard, but this was different. “After getting the mail and pulling into the driveway, something looked funny. I was shocked to see it was in out yard” she said.

Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad, the company who owns the tracks, routinely stores tanker cars on the tracks.

The tanker cars detailed from a track siding, which splits from the main track near Main Street in Mohrsville. The siding ends abruptly just before Bellemans Church Road on a small bridge over Irish Creek.

Younker says she usually sees railroad crews monitoring the rear of the tanker cars when they are placed on the siding. “I see them time to time on their walkie-talkies backing up the cars, so I’m not sure what happened today.”

Falling down an embankment, the rail cars broke Younker’s clothes line and a few trees. Overall, she feels thankful that there was not more damage.

”It doesn’t bother me that the railroad is here, but it’s kinda like my worst nightmare that a train is going to run into my yard. It’s a little shocking, but it’s not as bad as it could be.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlZi1rrfKI8&feature=emb_logo

No injuries were immediately reported. Initial reports indicate the rail cars were empty. The cause of the derailment is still under investigation. Further details will be provided when available.

Train derailment over I-94 damages bridge, shuts down freeway in Dearborn

    October 28 2020

A portion of Interstate 94 in Dearborn briefly shut down Wednesday morning after a train car derailed over the highway.

Michigan State Police troopers arrived at the scene around 5:45 a.m. and saw a train car hanging over the exit lanes to Michigan and Wyoming avenues. The train car destroyed part of the bridge, MSP said.

Only the eastbound I-94 exit ramp to Michigan and Wyoming is closed as of 10:30 a.m. The rest of the freeway is open.

The railroad company, CSX, said it will take several hours before it can correct the issue, according to MSP. Once CSX begins work, I-94 in both directions in the area will close.

"The cause of the derailment is under investigation," a CSX spokesperson said in an email to the Free Press. "CSX personnel are on site and are coordinating with the local authorities as we work to swiftly and safely remove the derailed cars."

Train derails overnight in Roanoke Co.

    Oct. 31, 2020 at 3:31 PM EDT

ROANOKE Co., Va. (WDBJ) - UPDATE: The Norfolk Southern bridge collapsed, causing the train carrying coal to derail, according to Roanoke County PIO Amy Whittaker. Norfolk Southern has updated their official count to 22 car that were involved.

Roanoke County released a statement Saturday that further details the response to the incident:

"The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) responded to the initial incident and have been coordinating with NSC on the removal of the rail cars and coal from the Roanoke River. Any environmental impacts from the coal are expected to be largely physical in nature. However, DEQ is coordinating with local, state and federal agencies and Norfolk Southern to collect samples to determine whether there have been any impacts to water quality.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is working closely with the City of Salem Water Treatment Plant to ensure drinking water service is not disrupted. Out of an abundance of caution, Salem is currently withdrawing water from groundwater wells and not the Roanoke River until the water samples from the river can be collected and analyzed. The City has sufficient back-up water resources and no disruptions to service are anticipated.

The Emergency Managers from Roanoke County and the City of Salem are also working with Norfolk Southern to ensure the safety of citizens as response efforts continue."

UPDATE: Norfolk Southern says 26 rail cars were on their way to Norfolk from Weller, carrying coal. No hazardous substances were a part of the derailment.

The cause of the incident is still being looked into.

EARLIER: A train derailed along Barley Drive overnight near the Roanoke County-Salem City line, according to Roanoke County emergency officials.

The railroad bridge over Barley Drive collapsed, dumping multiple rail cars into the road and Roanoke River.

Norfolk Southern and contractor crews are on scene. A hazmat crew has come and gone.

The train seems to have been carrying coal.

The art sculpture is coincidentally titled "Saved the Whale's Tail"

    November 02, 2020 10:46 AM

It’s a whale of a tale involving the tail of a whale — and it likely saved a train conductor’s life.

The front carriage of an elevated metro train slammed past the end of a railway in the Netherlands on Monday, only avoiding a 32-foot drop onto the ground after it became nestled atop an art sculpture featuring the tail fin of a whale, according to reports.

The driver of the train was not injured, and there were no passengers on board when it plowed through stop barriers at the end of the station in the town of Spijkenisse, the Associated Press reported.

The incident occurred near the port city of Rotterdam, and a spokeswoman for the local security authority told the AP that a team of experts was working to get it down safely.

“It’s tricky,” Carly Gorter told the outlet of removing the carriage, which remained suspended above a bike lane on top of the tail fins.

Coincidentally enough, the sculpture, made of reinforced polyester and put up in 2002, is called “Saved by the Whale’s Tail,” according to the Guardian.

“I’m surprised it’s so strong,” Maarten Struijs, the architect who designed the sculpture, reportedly told Dutch broadcaster RTL. “If plastic has been standing for 20 years, you don’t expect it to hold a metro carriage.”

“Of course it does look rather poetic,” Struijs reportedly added to the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper. “But it’s really lucky that the tail can bear the weight of the train.”

An investigation into how the incident occurred is ongoing, according to the AP.

ATLANTA — Authorities are investigating what preceded a train derailment Sunday night that sent one person to the hospital.

It happened in the 2900 block of Parrott Avenue NW, near the Riverside neighborhood, according to Atlanta Police. That's near the Chattahoochee River, just inside Interstate 285.

Police said they initially got a call of a traffic accident in the area, but the call was later changed to that of a rescue.

While the details of that rescue are unclear, Atlanta Police confirmed that one person was taken to the hospital. They were reportedly stable.

The train, operated by Norfolk Southern, derailed at around 8 p.m., according to the company. The company said members of its team are still gathering information from the field as to what happened exactly to cause the train to derail.

Neither the contents of the train nor its destination were available at this time.

No injuries reported after 21 Philadelphia-bound freight cars derail in Baltimore City

    NOV 24, 2020 AT 6:28 PM

A 21-car freight train derailment near Sisson and West 24th streets in North Baltimore was cleared from the tracks about 5 a.m. Tuesday, and train service resumed within the hour, according to CSX Transportation, the railroad company.

The derailment happened as the 109-car train was passing through Baltimore about 6:30 p.m. Monday on its way to Philadelphia from Avon, Indiana, a company official said.

No hazardous materials were involved, and there were no injuries to the train crew or the public, according to Cindy Schild, director of media relations and public affairs for the Jacksonville, Florida-based railroad.

The derailed cars were either empty or carrying pulpwood or sand, said Schild, who added that CSX is working closely with and appreciates the quick response by Baltimore fire and police departments as well as the Maryland Department of Transportation.

“The safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan,” Schild said.

Another CSX freight train derailed nearby in 2019. It was traveling north on elevated tracks near the North Avenue bridge when several cars derailed, plunging onto Falls Road. No one was injured, but one person’s vehicle was nearly struck by a toppled light pole.

At times Monday night, small groups of bystanders peered over the railings on the Sisson Street bridge to the tilted train cars below. From there, the train cars stretched out of sight into the darkness.

Rail cars jump tracks, spill coal

    November 25 2020

GREEN TOWNSHIP — The tiny village of Wandin was rattled Wednesday morning by the derailment of a northbound train loaded with coal and the collapse of a trestle over Wandin Road.

A spokesman at the Nicholasville, Ky., headquarters of RJ Corman Railroad Company, the owner of the rail line, said the cause of the accident was under investigation and the bridge was not thought to be responsible.

“Based on early indications, we do not believe at this time that the bridge failed,” said Todd Bivins. “But after that … I cannot say whether it was a track cause, or an equipment cause. That’s under investigation.”

Four cars of 64 in the train jumped the track: 36 had safely crossed and 24 others sat on the rails on the approach to the trestle along Starford Road, according to Assistant Chief James Hopkins III of the Commodore Volunteer Fire Department.

Tons of coal spilled into the woods on both sides of Wandin Road but appeared to pose no environmental danger or threaten any waterways.

    No one was injured.

Townspeople congregated near the collapsed bridge with cell phones and cameras, mingled among the first responders and railroad workers, and clambered through heavy brush to cross the tracks and get a gander at both sides of the ruined bridge.

“We were told someone had just driven through a moment earlier,” Hopkins said.

The train had been loaded with coal mined near Clymer and was bound for an interchange point near Clearfield, where Norfolk Southern Railroad would have taken the hopper cars to another destination, Bivins told the Gazette.

State police troopers investigated at the scene the mishap and worked with Commodore firefighters to detour traffic away from the fallen trestle. The bridge crossed Wandin Road less than 100 yards south of Starford Road.

“Certainly it’s a holiday, but we’re going to work to get this thing all cleaned up as soon as we can, today and tomorrow,” Bivins said. Wandin Road would be reopened “as soon as possible.”

    Dec 3 2020
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Authorities are investigating after a train derailed south of Fresno on Thursday morning.
Fourteen train cars on an 85-car train came off the BNSF Railway tracks that cross Central Avenue between Maple and Cedar Avenues, west of Highway 99, at about 5 am.
One of the derailed cars was carrying railroad wheels.
    The other 13 were empty.
The cars remained upright and off the tracks. No one was injured.
Officials say the train was coming from Richmond, California and headed to Barstow, California.
Authorities say they have a workaround route, so train traffic will continue.
Lots of heavy equipment was brought in to help crews clean up the derailment.
The incident forced the California Highway Patrol to close a short but heavily traveled section of Central Avenue for hours.
A portion of Malaga Avenue, where Louis Raco lives, was also closed to traffic.
"Ordinarily we don't have too many problems here so this was surprising to me," Raco said.
Raco says she was up at 5 a.m. when the cars derailed, but didn't hear anything.
Eventually she looked outside and saw the intersection was blocked by a train.
"I kept looking out there as it got daylight, I could see this car with blinking lights and I thought something's not right," she said.
Last week, a train derailed on a Union Pacific Line near Goshen, spilling a few gallons of hydrochloric acid.
BNSF officials say no hazardous materials were compromised in Thursday's derailment.
Officials haven't said how much damage was done to the cars or tracks, but they can confirm there were no injuries.
"Just good that no one got hurt," Raco said. "That's the main thing."
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

There were no crew members in the train's cab during the incident, Bryan Tucker, railroad spokesperson, told The Enquirer, adding that the train was being operated remotely.

Tucker said the incident is currently under investigation.

Crews are continuing to work on the wreckage and Gest Street is expected to reopen late Sunday night, he said.

Previous reporting: Seven train cars derailed on a bridge near the Cincinnati Museum Center on Sunday morning, according to a release from the Cincinnati Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to a report of a butane leak and found the train had derailed on the CSX Railroad Bridge over Gest Street, officials said.

Approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel had leaked from the train and onto the street below but the firefighters were able to contain the spill, officials said.

There was no hazardous material released from any of the train cars but the Metropolitan Sewer District has activated the Millcreek Dam to prevent diesel fuel from getting into the Ohio River, according to firefighters and the Metropolitan Sewer District.

Several powerlines are also down as a result of the incident. Workers with Duke Energy, CSX Railroad, MSD and the Cincinnati Fire Department responded to the scene.

Officials said the cleanup would take "an extended period of time" and Gest Street is now closed between Dalton Avenue and Evans Street. Seven cars derailed on top of the CSX Railroad bridge overtop on Gest Street in Queensgate Sunday morning. Duke Energy has also responded to the scene.

Taiwan: Dozens killed as train crashes and derails in tunnel

    Published48 minutes ago

At least 48 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a train carrying nearly 500 crashed and then derailed in a tunnel in Taiwan.

The eight-carriage train reportedly hit a construction vehicle that had slipped onto the tracks at the tunnel's mouth.

Rescuers combed badly damaged carriages inside the tunnel to find survivors, some of whom smashed windows to flee.

The train, from the capital Taipei to Taitung, was carrying people travelling for a long-weekend annual holiday.

Many people may have been standing because the train was so full.

The 408 train is one of the fastest deployed on a network that is generally considered safe. It can reach speeds of 130km/h (80mph).

Friday's crash is Taiwan's worst rail disaster in decades. President Tsai Ing-wen has sent her condolences to the families of the victims and ordered an investigation.

The latest reports from the National Fire Agency say 490 people were on the train, with 48 dead and some 66 injured.

    'Sudden violent jolt'

The crash took place at about 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT).

Some people at the back of the train were able to walk away unscathed, while 100 were rescued from the first four carriages. Many of the dead, injured and trapped were in four crumpled carriages inside the tunnel.

"It felt like there was a sudden violent jolt and I found myself falling to the floor," one female survivor told Taiwan's UDN. "We broke the window to climb to the roof of the train to get out."

Another rescued woman said: "My whole body fell to the floor. I hit my head and it started bleeding."

A 50-year-old survivor told Apple Daily she saw many people trapped under their seats and when she walked out of her carriage she saw bodies everywhere.

Local media reports say the train driver is among the dead.

Images show a large, yellow flatbed truck lying at the side of the tracks. A construction project has been under way near the north end of the tunnel.

It is not known how the vehicle slipped down the embankment.

    Survivors on stretchers

Other pictures showed people walking along the tracks with their belongings as they were evacuated from less badly affected carriages.

Other survivors were being carried away on stretchers with their necks in braces.

HUNTINGTON, Mo. — An estimated 33 cars of a Norfolk Southern train, many of them carrying new automobiles, derailed Monday afternoon in northern Ralls County, Mo. No injuries or hazardous material spills were reported.

KHQA-TV reports the Missouri State Highway Patrol and other first responders were notified of the derailment about 12:15 p.m. The accident blocked State Route DD, which will remain closed for an unknown period.

Washington, DC metro train DERAILS in tunnel, major line shut down during rush hour
A metro train serving the US capital has partially gone off the rails in a tunnel connecting Washington, DC with Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, stranding around 400 passengers and snarling up the evening commute.
Service between the Pentagon and Foggy Bottom was suspended on Tuesday afternoon, after a Blue Line train derailed in the Rosslyn tunnel, local media reported. Only one of the cars in the train, with 25 passengers on board, had lost contact with the rails – but that stranded the entire 12-car train, with an estimated 400 people stuck in the tunnel for over an hour.

Dozens dead in DR Congo train accident: Rail company

Local media quoted the provincial governor as saying 60 people had been killed.

A train crash in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed at least 60 people, the state rail company and local sources said.

“[Currently] the toll is 61 dead, men, women and children [and] 52 injured who have been evacuated,” Marc Manyonga Ndambo, director of infrastructure at the SNCC train operator, told the AFP news agency on Saturday.

Local media quoted the provincial governor, Fifi Masuka, as saying 60 people had been killed.

It was a freight train which was carrying “several hundred stowaways”, said Manyonga.

Manyonga said the train was made up of 15 wagons, 12 of which were empty. It was coming from Luen in a neighboring province destined for the mining town of Tenke, close to Kolwezi, the capital of Lualaba province in southern DRC.

It derailed at 11:50pm (21:50 GMT) on Thursday near the village of Buyofwe, about 200km (125 miles) from Kolwezi, “at a place where there are ravines”, into which seven of the 15 wagons fell, he said.

“My team is working hard to clear the track by Monday,” Manyonga added. He did not say how the crash had happened.

Train derailments are common in the DRC, as are shipwrecks of overloaded boats on the country’s lakes and rivers.

Due to the lack of passenger trains or passable roads, people use goods trains to travel long distances.

Last October, nine people died after a train derailed in the city of Kenzenze in the territory of Mutshatsha in the same province.

Highway 39 closed near Rouleau, Sask. following train derailment

Highway 39 is expected to be closed for several hours near Rouleau, Sask., after a train derailment occurred.

Saskatchewan RCMP said officers with the Milestone detachment are on scene and there are no reported injuries.

An RCMP statement added the derailment did not occur at a level crossing.

A CP Rail spokesperson added there are no public safety concerns in a statement to Global News.

CP Rail said the freight train derailed between Rouleau and Wilcox around 6:45 a.m.

    The incident is under investigation.

Rouleau resident Jackie Krasko saw the aftermath of the derailment on her way to work Wednesday morning.

“I was shocked to see it but I was happy that it was not oil or liquid natural gas tank cars that came off the rail … because that could have been an explosion,” Krasko told Global News.

Krasko pointed to other recent derailments such as one this past weekend near Drinkwater, Sask. as “scary” incidents.

“I think about (Lac-Mégantic train derailment) and I mean if it hit close to our Rouleau I’m sure it’s going to start a fire and if the oil and liquid natural gas …explodes, I think we could lose our whole town.”

Drivers are asked to check the Highway Hotline for updated information before travelling in the area.

RCMP said drivers can expect delays in this area and are asked to follow officer directions at the scene.

Drivers are also reminded to slow down to 60 km/h when passing emergency workers.

The train cars tipped over appeared to be carrying vehicles. Crews are currently on scene with cranes attempting to stand the cars back up.

1 dead after train derails in Texas and hits gas line, forcing dozens of residents to evacuate

Chantal Da Silva - 4h ago

One person is dead after a train derailed in El Paso, Texas, hitting a gas line and forcing residents to evacuate the area Monday night, officials said.

The El Paso Fire Department said late Monday that crews had responded to an incident where two train cars derailed, damaging a backyard shed, a fence and a gas meter.

It said nearby homes had been evacuated "as a safety precaution" and urged others to avoid the area of Franklin and Barton as it was an "active emergency scene."

The fire department later announced that at least one person had died in the train derailment. It was not clear how they died and officials did not release any details on the victim's identity. No other injuries were reported, the fire department said.

In an update around two hours after initially reporting the incident, the fire department said the damaged gas line had been shut down and evacuation orders were lifted. It said around 50 residents had been allowed back into their homes.

It was not immediately clear what caused the train derailment.
