Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Authorities say no one hurt after train derails into northwest Iowa river

    Published 4:39 p.m. CT Sept. 23, 2018 | Updated 6:20 p.m. CT Sept. 23, 2018

A Union Pacific train carrying industrial sand and soybean oil came off it’s tracks on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, near Alton, Iowa. Sioux County Sheriff, Special to the Register

Authorities responded to another train derailment in a small northwest Iowa town Sunday morning after a week of heavy rains.

Sioux County authorities said no one was hurt in the accident and no hazardous materials had leaked into the Floyd River or could be detected in the air above Alton, near where the train crashed Sunday.

In an email, Raquel Espinoza, a senior director of corporate communications for Union Pacific, said "recent flooding may have contributed to the accident."

The massive crash followed days of heavy rain in the area, which had elevated the river below the railroad bridge to a record high earlier in the week. As of early Sunday afternoon, the Floyd River was still barely above flood stage at 13 feet, meteorologist Kyle Weisser with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, told the Register.

Espinoza said an estimated 37 of the train's 95 cars derailed. The train, on its way to North Platte, Nebraska, from Mankato, Minnesota, was carrying industrial sand and soybean oil. Some of the sand spilled into the river.

Twenty of the derailed cars fell into the river, according to Union Pacific. The bridge beneath the train was destroyed.

In an aerial video posted on Facebook, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office shows a line of mangled cars sitting in the Floyd River. The accident occurred Sunday morning at around 4:30 a.m., Alton City Administrator Dale Oltmans said.

Oltmans said the bridge over the river is “gone … laying in pieces underneath the train.” Several local fire departments, county officials and Union Pacific personnel responded to the early morning crash.

Oltmans said people living three or four blocks away from the bridge heard the loud crash, the second train derailment of the year in northwest Iowa.

On June 22, 32 freight cars carrying crude oil derailed in the Rock River, spilling thousands of gallons of the oil. The river had also taken on heavy rains in the days leading up to the incident.

Weisser said that the area of the state around Alton received 4-8 inches of rain earlier in the week. According to weather service measurements, Alton received 4.58 inches of rain between Tuesday and Friday.

The heavy rains forced the city to close a section of Third Avenue that goes above the river, Oltmans said. It was still closed as of Sunday afternoon.

The Floyd River, Weisser said, peaked on Thursday afternoon at 21.96 feet — about 12 feet above flood stage. When the train derailed, the weather service’s measurements showed the fallen cars acting as a temporary dam for the river.

Espinoza said Union Pacific looks into weather forecasts and environmental conditions where trains operate, she said. The company urges its crews to be safe if they run into a weather-related issue that could affect the train's ability to move down the tracks.

Part of the crash investigation will include will include what if any communications the crew received about its trip, Espinoza said.

The sheriff’s office also issued an alert Sunday afternoon, advising drivers to avoid traveling through Alton to allow the authorities and their equipment to clean up the wreck.

20 injured as train derails near Sehwan

    September 28, 2018

Twenty passengers sustained critical injuries on Thursday when 11 coaches as well as the locomotive of Khushal Khan Khattak Express en route from Karachi to Peshawar derailed in a hilly area on Sehwan-Larkana track near Sehwan.
Reportedly, a team of rescue officers led by Karachi Divisional Superintendent Hafeezullah Bhurgari, Deputy Superintendent Shahid Hussain Samoon rushed to the spot to supervise relief and rehabilitation work. As a result of the incident, rail traffic travelling to Karachi was suspended near Sehwan. Railway officials said it would take 10 to 12 hours to clear the track.
Meanwhile, railways spokesperson confirmed that no deaths were reported and the injured passengers were rushed to a local hospital for medical attention in Sann town. Later, Sann Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Arbab Soomro and other railway staff working under Sehwan Station Master Majeed Soomro moved to the spot to assist passengers.
Meanwhile, the DSP said that the apparent cause of the accident was ‘unrepaired’ railway track and not any terrorist act. Majeed Soomro said that a technical team would hold a thorough probe to determine the actual cause of the accident. “Since the accident site is off the road, repair of the track may take more time than usual,” he said.
Pakistan Railway Assistant Engineer Maqsood Ahmed Larik led another team of 250 employees along with labourers to expedite the rehabilitation work after four hours of the accident, and subsequently restored eight coaches. He said that passengers were sent to Peshawar via a rescue train, and necessary measures were taken for passengers waiting at Amri railway station, who were facing shortages of food and water supply

TRAX train derails in West Valley City, strikes oncoming train

    11/2/18

The last car of a northbound TRAX train leaving West Valley City derailed Thursday night, hitting a power pole and an oncoming train, according to Utah Transit Authority.
The derailment happened about 7:30 p.m. as the northbound train turned a corner leaving West Valley Central station, 2750 W. 3590 South. The last car fishtailed into a power pole, which fell on top of the train car, and then it hit the southbound train, UTA spokesman Carl Arky said. The southbound train was also derailed in the collision.
“It’s amazing how it happened just as another train was passing it,” Arky said.

No one was riding the northbound train, which completely derailed onto the opposite tracks. Nineteen people were aboard the southbound train. No one was injured, though passengers had to wait about an hour to exit because officials wanted to make sure the broken electricity pole and been powered down, Arky said.
Arky said UTA will investigate the cause of the derailment. He expects the review to take a few weeks.
The derailments caused delays in the area, and UTA officials set up a bus bridge to carry passengers between Redwood Junction and West Valley Central while the train system was down. Arky said passengers would likely need to use the bus bridge through at least Friday morning.

Amtrak Train Derails In Hudson River Tunnel, Causing Delays For Morning Commute
    November 2, 2018 at 12:55 pm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A disabled Amtrak train caused major delays in and out of Penn Station for the Friday morning commute.
The maintenance train derailed inside the North Tube of the Hudson River Tunnel around 6 a.m., leaving only the South Tube open for use. More than four hours later, Amtrak tweeted the train had been removed and service was restored with residual delays.

As of 12:30 p.m., some Amtrak trains were experiencing residual delays, while New Jersey Transit and Long Island Rail Road said their service was close to schedule. Earlier, Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT riders faced up to 60-minute delays for the morning rush.
Riders told CBS2’s Reena Roy the disruptions made them late to work, miss meetings, cut it close with flights and even miss a wedding.
“Pretty awful, waiting here 60 minutes for a train,” one man said.
“I’m very stressed out. I was supposed to be at a meeting an hour ago,” another man added.
“It’s not a good feeling, not a good  feeling,” said Garrett Gillis, who had been asked to witness a good friend’s wedding in Trenton but had to miss out. “It just sucks that it had to happen today of all days.”

This is just the latest in a series of service disruptions for the agencies.
On Monday, an NJ TRANSIT train lost power, leaving commuters in the dark with no air circulating for hours. Then on Tuesday, the Amtrak-operated portal bridge over the Hackensack River malfunctioned for more than an hour after opening for marine traffic.

CBS2 has been demanding answers from elected officials about the aging bridge all week. Governor Philly Murphy has promised changes, and on Friday called on other officials to step up.
“It’s a mess we inherited but we’re going to claw through it,” Murphy said. “If you’re a commuter and you’re frustrated I don’t blame you. We will fix this, we need the federal government to help us fix it. We need Amtrak, but we will fix it.”
“The delayed commutes, missed family time and lost economic opportunity this week show yet again how much we need to Build Gateway Now. Today’s delays would not have happened with a new Gateway tunnel, which will create badly needed resiliency so trains can operate around minor disruptions without wreaking havoc on the entire Northeast Corridor rail system. There is simply no more time to waste in building a new Portal Bridge and Hudson River Tunnel to finally bring 21st Century transportation to 200,000 passengers a day,” Gateway Project Trustees Steven M. Cohen, Tony Coscia, and Jerry Zaro said in a statement Friday.

Runaway train derailed in Australia after 50 minutes

    • 6 November 2018

A freight train was deliberately derailed after hurtling through Western Australia at high speed for 50 minutes without its driver.

The 268-wagon train, owned by mining giant BHP, travelled for 92km (57 miles) with no-one on board in the outback Pilbara region on Monday.

The company said it had derailed the train remotely from Perth. It has since suspended its rail operations.

BHP said the incident had begun when the driver alighted to inspect a wagon.

"While the driver was outside of the locomotive, the train commenced to run away," the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said in a statement.

No-one was injured when the train, carrying iron ore, was derailed at 05:30 local time (18:30 Sunday GMT), the ATSB said. It has begun an investigation.

BHP said the train had been travelling from its inland Newman mine to Port Hedland.

It was derailed near Turner, about 120km from its destination, damaging the train and a 1.5km section of track.

The train was estimated to have been travelling at an average speed of 110km/h (68mph).

BHP said the train had travelled through a sparsely populated region on the company's own tracks.

State Premier Mark McGowan described the incident as "very concerning".

"I am sure that there will be a full review undertaken by BHP, and I will consult about what role the state might have in that," he said on Tuesday.

The Anglo-Australian miner said it was likely to take a week to restore its operations.

In July, rival company Rio Tinto said it had become the world's first miner to complete a heavy freight journey with new driverless train technology.

At least 10 stowaways dead as DR Congo train derails

BUKAVU, DR CONGO (AFP) - At least 10 stowaways were killed and 24 were injured when a freight train derailed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said Sunday (Nov 11).
Rehema Omari, stationmaster in the town of Samba near where the accident occurred on Friday, said the toll was provisional.
"The brakes gave way when the train was going at top speed," she told AFP, adding that the driver had fled.

A migration service official said however that he saw "at least 30 mangled bodies and others under the cars" of the train.
State rail company SNCC's director general for Lubumbashi, Ilunga Ilunkamba, said experts were on the scene to determine the final toll and investigate the causes of the accident.
SNCC is headquartered in Lubumbashi, the DR Congo's mining capital, where the train had been headed from the central city of Kindu when it derailed near Samba some 280 kilometres to the south, Omari said.

Rail accidents in the sprawling former Belgian colony are frequent and often deadly because of decrepit track and ageing locomotives dating from the 1960s.
In November 2017, 35 people, many of them clandestine passengers, were killed when a freight train carrying 13 oil tankers plunged into a ravine in southern Lualaba province.

Train derails in Byromville, city evacuated

A CSX train carrying propane fell off the tracks in Byromville, which is in Dooly County.

    UPDATE:

A detour has been set as a result of the derailment.

The roadway near the derailment is completely blocked and odorless fuel spilled onto the area.

Everyone in the area should detour by taking Georgia 90 away from the area to Georgia 27 in Vienna, then to Georgia 230 in Byromville, and then back to Georgia 230.

If you are driving though the area, there will be signs to lead the way.

Once the track and roadway are cleared, a new detour will be put in place using SR 230 and SR 230 Connector while the bridge structure is inspected to ensure it is safe for motorists.

People in Byromville located in Dooly County are being asked to evacuate the area after a train derailed Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Brett Walls says between fifteen and thirty cars fell off of a bridge onto Highway 90. He added that a Haz-Mat team advised them to evacuate everyone within one-mile in every direction of the accident.

"If you know the town of Byromville, that's practically the whole town," he said.

It happened just after 7 a.m. and several railcars derailed near Main Street. A deputy witnessed the incident and called in the sheriff's department.

Walls said the cars contain non-odorous propane and that's the reason for the evacuation.

The train had two locomotives, 72 loaded rail cars and 69 empty cars. So far, they haven't had any injuries associated with the accident.

South Korea’s bullet train derails, no casualties reported

A KTX bullet train en route to Seoul derailed shortly after departing from Gangneung with 198 passengers aboard today, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported the operator as saying.

No causalities were reported and 14 passengers suffering from minor injuries were transferred to nearby hospitals.

An official from the Korea Railroad Corp (KORAIL) said the train left the city, located 237km east of Seoul, and derailed while approaching Jinbu Station at around 7.35am.

The train went off the tracks only around five minutes after departing, passengers said.

Almost all of the train’s 10 cars went off the tracks due to a yet-to-be-determined reason, with KORAIL saying it is carrying out an investigation.

The train was originally set to reach Seoul at 9.30am. The passengers were transferred to other stations by buses.

KORAIL said other trains are running on a normal schedule from Seoul to Jinbu

“I was travelling from Gangneung to PyeongChang in the sixth car. But shortly after the train departed, it went off the tracks with a thud,” a 22-year-old passenger said.

“It was as if the train slid for around 50 metres, and I could hear the train dragging pebbles with a metallic sound.”

The passenger said people were hanging on to their chairs, with some injured people screaming during the accident.

“Even after we got off the train, we had to wait around 50 minutes outside,” the passenger added. “I saw an old lady bleeding from her head.”

Freight train derails in East Austin Sunday; MetroRail back Monday

8:20 a.m.: Capital Metro’s MetroRail commuter train service was experiencing delays of up to 25 minutes Monday morning as repairs were being made to a track in East Austin after a train derailed there early Sunday.

6:35 a.m. Monday update: Capital Metro’s passenger rail will resume operations this morning after a train derailed in East Austin early Sunday, causing several road closures in the area.

Minor delays may occur near Sixth Street as the area is repaired, Capital Metro officials said.

“We don’t expect any major disruptions,” they said.

Sunday: Greg Anderson was already awake at 4:20 a.m. Sunday at his home near the railroad tracks in East Austin when the unusually loud noise of a passing train startled him.

When he looked out his patio door, Anderson said, he saw one train car fall of the track, causing other cars to split off into different directions.

Nine of the train’s 88 cars derailed, with some being jostled enough to spill their cargo — rocks to be used as base material — and forcing the closure of several are streets in the area as workers tried to clean up the mess and get the train moving again.

There were no injuries, according to Austin police, who said the recent rains and cold weather may have shifted the tracks, causing the derailment.

Officials from Capital Metro, which runs its MetroRail on the tracks, and Watco, the company that operates the freight train, said they planned to conduct a full investigation of the incident, including evaluating factors such as speed. Capital Metro spokeswoman Mariette Hummel said the incident was not expected to be environmentally disruptive. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Austin police shut down the 2500 block of Webberville Road at Northwestern Avenue, the 2400 block of East Seventh Street, the 2400 block of East Sixth Street and the 500 block of Pedernales Street at East Fifth Street for most of Sunday.

The last car was rerailed at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, with overnight clearing expected to take place, Hummel said.

Police and Cap Metro officials said that because the derailment happened on a Sunday, it did not have a significant effect on traffic or passenger rail service, but that it was an inconvenience to residents and commuters in the area.

Hummel said the Metro Rail Red Line and freight line both operate on the same track, and the portion the rail line operates on will be cleared by Monday. Normal service is expected to continue, she said.

Herzog, the railroad service that maintains the tracks, is expected to have the freight tracks back in service by Tuesday evening, said Tracie VanBecelaere, communications director for Watco.

At least two other Austin-area train derailments have been blamed on weather in the past six months.

In September, a train with 20 cars carrying gravel derailed in Williamson County. No injuries were reported, and the Texas Department of Public Safety said the cause was tracks washed out by rains. In July, six cars in a train carrying dirt and sand derailed in Manor. City officials said they believed the cause to also be weather-related.

Nine killed as high-speed train crashes into bridge

NINE passengers died and dozens of others were injured when a high-speed train hit a service engine and crashed into a pedestrian overpass.

Television images from the crash site yesterday showed rescue teams working with sniffer dogs to search the mangled wreckage for trapped survivors — but none was found.

The accident happened at around 6.30am as the train, carrying 206 passengers, was leaving the Turkish capital Ankara for the city of Konya, about 160 miles to the south.

It hit the engine which was being used to inspect tracks at Marşandiz station, said transport minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan.

At least two cars derailed, crashing into an overpass which then collapsed onto the train, he added.

Three engine drivers and six passengers were killed in the collision.

Turkey’s health minister Fahrettin Koca said 84 other people had sought medical help after the crash.

The cause was not immediately clear, but the Turkish engineers and architects union posted a tweet quoting its chairman Yunus Yener, who said ‘signalling problems’ had been flagged on the line ‘for some time’.

It added: ‘The accident is murder.’

Three railway workers were arrested on suspicion of negligence and president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to carry out a thorough investigation.

Passenger Ayse Ozyurt said the crash happened 12 minutes into the journey.

‘The train was not fast at that time. Suddenly, there was a frightening brakeage and the train was off the rail.’

In July, 24 people were killed and more than 70 injured when a passenger train derailed in northwestern Turkey after torrential rains caused a section of track to collapse.

And 15 people were hurt last month when a passenger train collided with a freight train in the province of Sivas.

Konya is home to the tomb of the Sufi mystic and poet Jalaladdin Rumi, and this week thousands of pilgrims head to the city for a feast of remembrance.

6 killed, 16 injured in train accident on Danish bridge

    Posted: 5:50 AM, Jan 02, 2019
    Updated: 6:50 AM, Jan 02, 2019

Six people were killed and 16 injured in an accident Wednesday morning involving a commuter train on the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark, Danish police said.

The accident took place around 7:35 a.m. local time. The area was experiencing high winds and powerful waves caused by Storm Alfrida.

The accident, which involved two trains, occurred on a bridge linking the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen, a Danish police spokeswoman said. Police were first called at 7:35 a.m. (1:35 am ET), she said.

Passengers have been evacuated from the train but police and rescue teams are still working at the scene.

A spokesman for brewing company Carlsberg told CNN that Carlsberg beer was being transported on a freight train over the bridge. "The train was carrying our goods apparently, but we do not transport our own goods in Denmark," said Kasper Elbjorn from Carlsberg, which has its headquarters in Copenhagen. The beer was carried by Deutsche Bahn Cargo Scandinavia, he said.

No cause for the accident has been established yet by police but the two trains may have had contact, the police spokeswoman said.

Danish police cannot yet confirm the number of dead, nor who the victims are, the spokeswoman said. All possible causes are being investigated.

Passenger Jim Nielson, who is from Denmark but lives in Ireland, told CNN he was going to the airport to catch a flight back after the holidays when the incident occurred.

"I was on the second coach when the crash happened. There was a cargo train coming from Zealand, the opposite direction. It was shaking due to the strong wind," he said.

"One of the containers was blown off the cargo train into the rails, because of the wind. Our driver tried to stop the train, pulling the brake. But the train continued to drive a bit, and crashed into the container blown off from the cargo.

"I saw sparks coming from the wheels. I ducked and bumped my head. Ten seconds later I heard a sudden bang. Then the train came into a halt. There was a lot of confusion, total darkness. Passengers on the first coach took the hardest hit, I believe that's where most of the casualties are."

Nielson said the train was very crowded at the time. Emergency services arrived within 10 to 15 minutes, he said, and used special equipment to open the doors, which were jammed.

Nielson spoke from an evacuation center in the city of Nyborg, on Funen, where he was taken with scores of others from the train. "It's a bad way to start the New Year, but I'm glad to be safe," he said.

Flemming Jensen, managing director of Denmark's national rail service, DSB, said it took the accident very seriously.

"Our thoughts are with relatives and we are doing all we can and what is practically possible, to assist clients and their relatives," he said.

The bridge has now reopened to road traffic heading east but with speed restrictions in place, police said. Drivers are urged to show respect by not taking pictures or slowing down to look at the crash scene.

Cleanup continues after Beaufort County train derailment

BLOUNTS CREEK, NC (WITN) - Railroad officials say they expect track repairs to be completed later today from that New Year's Day train derailment in Beaufort County.

Norfolk Southern says 12 tanker cars carrying molten sulfur derailed from a 97-car CSX train around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The CSX train was operating on Norfolk Southern tracks and was headed to the phosphate mine in Aurora.

Crews have so far been able to re-rail five of the tankers and moved them, while seven cars remain at the site near Stilley Station Road in Blounts Creek.

Norfolk Southern says between 6,000 and 8,000 gallons of the molten sulfur escaped from the tankers. The sulfur is transported as a liquid, but cools rapidly and solidifies, according to the railroad.

The hardened sulfur will be removed and replaced with new soil, Norfolk Southern told WITN News.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, while Stilley Station Road should reopen later today.

    Previous Story

First responders in Beaufort County are on the scene of a train derailment in the Blounts Creek community

Beaufort County Fire Marshal Curtis Avery says a CSX train carrying molten sulfur derailed around 1:50 am.

Blounts Creek Fire Chief David Williams says eleven tanker cars derailed and Stilley Station Rd. is shut down near the intersection with Highway 33.

Norfolk Southern Railroad, which owns the tracks, is bringing in a contractor with heavy equipment to remove the tankers.

The train was bound for Nutrien Aurora Phosphate in Aurora, formerly known as PCS Phosphate.

Avery says there was a slight fire initially that has since been contained by several responding agencies.

Beaufort County Emergency Management, North Carolina Emergency Management, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Highway Patrol, a hazmat team from Williamston Fire-Rescue-EMS and Chocowinity EMS all responded.

No injuries have been reported. Avery says there is no threat to the community.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Saskatoon train derails and catches fire

    CTV Saskatoon
    Published Tuesday, January 22, 2019 10:21AM CST
Last Updated Tuesday, January 22, 2019 6:06PM CST

Update: The locomotive fire was fully extinguished by 1 p.m. The Saskatoon Fire Department says one lane of Highway 11 southbound has now been opened. Speed and traffic restrictions will remain in place until the scene is cleared.

Original story: A train fire near Warman is proving to be a challenge for firefighters.

“We have a fire that’s flowing. The liquid fuel, the diesel, is actually flowing and igniting at the same time so it provides some additional challenge to control that,” Saskatoon Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Roger said.

Saskatoon Fire Department was called to the train derailment at Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The CN train consisted of 52 rail cars carrying grain. Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed one locomotive was leaking diesel fuel and on fire. Thirty rail cars were derailed from the tracks.

“It was kicking up some snow and I thought, ‘Gosh, this thing is going to tip. I can’t believe I’m seeing this,’” said Rachel Baird, who saw the crash.

“And then sure enough it slowly tips over. Of course next one, the next one, three or four just tip over but then they’re piling into each other just like a movie. It was pretty wild.”

No one was hurt and there is no risk to public safety, the fire department said.

The highway is closed in both directions and drivers are advised to find alternate routes.

CN crews will be able to remove cars once the fire is out.

Locomotive that pulled Hitrino disaster train derails at Bulgaria’s Plovdiv railway station

Written by The Sofia Globe staff on February 16, 2019 in Bulgaria - Comments Off on Locomotive that pulled Hitrino disaster train derails at Bulgaria’s Plovdiv railway station

A locomotive that pulled the train that exploded in the Bulgarian village of Hitrino in December 2016 derailed in Plovdiv railway station on February 16 2019, disrupting rail traffic.

The locomotive and first three wagons were derailed, Bulgarian state railways BDZ said.

No one was injured and there was no danger from the train, which was transporting more than 2000 tons of LPG gas from Serbia to a distributor point in Plovdiv.

BDZ said that an investigative commission had been appointed to establish the cause of the derailment.

Plovdiv district prosecutor Roumen Popov said that the locomotive was the same as that involved in the Hitrino disaster. On December 10 2016, a gas tank transport train owned by the Bulmarket company exploded, leaving seven people dead, many seriously injured and causing extensive property damage in the village.

Commenting on the Plovdiv railway station incident, Bulmarket said that the train had been travelling at low speed. The company’s manager, Petar Ganev, said that the initial theory about the cause of the accident was a cracked rail.

The train had been travelling at 35km/h, below the 40km/h speed limit on that stretch of rail.

A National Investigation Service team is assisting in the investigation. Popov said that pre-trial proceedings had been initiated

Train Derails in Egyptian Capital Cairo, Multiple Casualties Reported

    11:41 27.02.2019

The train went off the rails and caught fire near the Ramses station in the Egypt capital, according to the portal Masravi.

According to preliminary information, the train left the depot and was travelling at a high speed when it slammed into a covered platform. The collision caused a fiery explosion; the inferno spread to one of the buildings at Ramses Station.

Egypt’s Transportation Minister Hisham Arafat resigned on Wednesday following a major fire at the Ramses railway station, the Al-Ahram news outlet reported.

According to Al-Ahram, Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has already accepted Arafat's resignation.

28 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a Cairo train fire, according to a source in Egypt's Health Ministry. The state TV reported that 20 people have been killed and 40 others wounded. The death toll could be much higher. According to other sources the death toll may be less.

Preliminary data suggests that the engineer of the train that caught fire at the central Ramses Station in Cairo might have lost control of the machine, resulting in it colliding with some kind of barrier, and killing and injuring dozens, a source in the Egyptian Transport Ministry told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"As a result [of the collision], a fire started in the train, which immediately spread to the first wagon with a fuel pod and then to the passenger cars," the source said.

The fire spread through Cairo's central railway station.

People reportedly suffered carbon monoxide poisoning as they couldn't leave the platform and the station during the panic.

Security officials have partially closed the entrances of the train station, according to Ahram Online news portal.

Ambulances and firefighters are at the scene.

The central train station in Cairo has been evacuated, the rail services near the station have been temporarily suspended.

Train derails in Nashville, buildings evacuated

    Posted: 3:06 PM, Feb 27, 2019

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A train has derailed in Nashville, prompting evacuations of nearby buildings and businesses.

It happened at 2605 Fessey Park Road and Berry Road Wednesday afternoon.

At least five trucks derailed, some completely overturned off the tracks and two of which spilled their contents of soybean oil and barley. The crash presented no danger to community, but crossings are blocked.

A Nashville Fire Department official said they are working to keep the oil from continuing to spill. The cause of the crash is unknown and is under investigation.

Berry Hill Police Department officials said even though the train was not carrying flammable materials, they evacuated surrounding buildings including a Goodwill and the Berry Hill Post Office.

A total about about 50 people were forced out of the area.

"Oh it could've been catastrophic if there was a flammable item inside one of these tankers it could've been real bad for everybody," said Corp. Tony Russo.

Berry Road is shut down and crossings will be blocked until CSX deems it safe to pass.

Video captured by Sadie Gerbe captured a wheel jumping up and dust flying from a train as it went by the railroad crossing.

Gerbe saw it happen as she waited on Craighead Street.

"I thought oh, that's not normal," Gerbe said.

What really alarmed her was watching the video back and seeing sparks underneath one of the train cars.

"I was glad I was safe. That was crazy. I'm glad it didn't happen right there where I was," Gerbe said.

Surveillance video from a nearby business gave a better look at the train went off the tracks. You could see workers walking over to where it stopped derailing six train cars.

CSX told News4 the train was on its way to Waycross, Georgia, which is almost 500 miles from Nashville

"I always remembered going into the little post office right here and it's right on the railroad tracks. The train would go by and I thought 'wow, if one ever did derail right here, this would all be wiped out,'" Linda Pettibone who used to work nearby said.

Pettibone wanted to see it for herself.

Video from Drone4 captured the soybean oil and barley spilled on the ground and ripped up railroad tracks.

As for Gerbe, a drive to work will never be the same when she's stopped at a crossing.

"A lot of times there's nice art on the trains. So, I take pictures or take a video of it. I didn't think I'd take a video like that," Gerbe said.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. There was serious damage to the tracks and it is unknown when it will reopen.

Toll rises to 32 dead, 91 hurt as DR Congo train derails

    March 18 2019

Officials said there was a large number of children among the dead when the train veered off the tracks in central Kasai province.

KINSHASA - Thirty-two people were killed and 91 others injured when a freight train carrying stowaways derailed in DR Congo overnight, officials said on Monday, updating an earlier toll of 24 dead.

Officials said there was a large number of children among the dead when the train veered off the tracks in central Kasai province.

Of the injured, 18 were in serious condition, a district official told AFP after arriving at the site on Monday.

The goods train veered off the tracks as it was crossing a bridge over a river about 140 kilometres (85 miles) northwest of the provincial capital Kananga.

"Many carriages fell into the water from the bridge over the Luembe River," a police official said late on Sunday at Bena Leka train station.

In such a vast country, stowaways tend to be very common.

"We are overwhelmed by the number of injured, we are working urgently," said Dr Jean Claude Tshimanga who works at the nearby Kakenge hospital when the initial toll stood at 24 dead and 31 injured.

It was the third train accident within the space of a month in central DR Congo. Last month, five people were killed when a passenger train crashed at Kalenda station.

Rail accidents in the sprawling former Belgian colony are frequent and often deadly because of decrepit track and ageing locomotives dating from the 1960s.

4 dead, 2 missing in China aluminum ore train derailment

    April 11 at 7:44 AM

BEIJING — A train carrying aluminum ore derailed in a central Chinese province, killing at least four people, local authorities said Thursday, in the latest in a series of industrial accidents to strike the country.

The city government of Gongy in Henan province said the train crashed into a village home after jumping the tracks around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Two other people were listed as missing, it said.

The 25-car train is owned by a subsidiary of Aluminum Corporation of China and ran on a 22-kilometer (14-mile) track built in the 1950s specially for transporting ore.

TV footage showed tangled cars from the train spread across a forested area.

China experiences frequent industrial accidents despite orders from the central government to improve safety at factories, power plants and mines or risk prosecution. Skirting of safety regulations — sometimes with the collusion of corrupt local officials — is generally given as the cause.

In March, 78 people were killed in a blast at a chemical plan that had numerous safety violations in one of China’s worst industrial accidents in recent years. In November, at least 22 people were killed and scores of vehicles destroyed in an explosion outside a chemical plant in the northeastern city of Zhangjiakou, which will host competitions in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

THIS DAY learnt that the train, which left Lagos almost five days ago, had been having technical problems during the journey which was not expected to last more than 48 hours.

According to eyewitnesses, between Maikunkele and Jangaru towns, the train was reported to have run into a herd of cows resulting in the accident.

The engine was said to be still on the track while the first class and five other wagons had veered off the track.

It was said that the few passengers left in the train as a result of the problems it encountered on the journey managed to escape death.

However, some of the passengers were injured and were rushed to Minna for medical attention with the railway ambulance.

The remaining passengers, who were not hurt, were stranded as they were seen begging for transport fare to take them to their destinations.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) claimed they were not aware of the accident.

No official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was available to comment on the incident.
