Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Freight train derails over bridge in Maryland, plummets into Susquehanna River

    Published 6:32 p.m. ET March 3, 2018

In the midst of this weekend's wild weather and wind storms, which caused trees, trucks and just about anything else not tethere..., a train in Maryland fell into the Susquehanna River.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a freight train on its way to Richmond, Virginia, derailed on a bridge, and four empty rail cars plummeted into the river on Friday night.

It happened between Cecil and Harford counties around 8 p.m., CSX train officials said in a statement. No injuries or hazardous materials were involved, they said.

Though gusts of winds were impacting the entire region, officials would not commit to the notion that winds caused this accident, instead saying the derailment remains under investigation, the Sun reported.

Restaurant owner Dan Lee, who owns nearby MacGregor's in Havre de Grace, told The Sun he and his wife "heard the bang" when the rail cars fell into the Susquehanna.

One of the cars, he said, floated to a dock behind his house in Perryville, about a half-mile down river.

Train derails, closes Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction

    Updated 12:54 pm, Wednesday, March 14, 2018

ROTTERDAM JUNCTION - A freight train derailed on tracks that cross Route 5S, closing the busy road Wednesday morning.

The train went of the rails on a portion of the tracks near the SI Group's plant along Route 5S.

The cars that are off the tracks appear to be containers for liquid but

it was unclear if they were filled with any fluid. Sheriff Dom Dagostino said no fluid leaked.

Police expect the closure of the road will cause significant traffic delays but they say the derailment poses no other hazards.

Police said detours are being used to move traffic around the area though the sign for the eastbound detour blew down near Route 103 and cars are continuing on Route 5S until they get to the derailment.

It appears that at least four cars near the front of the train derailed.

Route 5S in Rotterdam, N.Y., was shutdown on Wednesday March 14, 2018, after a Pan Railways freighter derailed. (Steve Hughes / Times Union)

    Media: Times Union

The westbound side of the road will be closed from Interstate 890 at

the Thruway's Exit 26 toll booth. Traffic is being routed over the Mohawk River to Route 5 in Glenville.

Eastbound traffic is being detoured over the Mohawk River at Route 103 and vehicles are then being sent east on Route 5 in Glenville.

Police say it could take some time to remove the derailed train and Route 5S is expected to be closed throughout the day.

UPDATE: CSX train derails at New River Gorge

    MCKENDREE, W.Va. (WV MetroNews/WSAZ/AP) -- UPDATE 4/16/18 @ 8:50 p.m.

    By WV MetroNews |

CSX says an empty coal train has hit a rock slide and derailed in southern West Virginia. No injuries were reported.

The company says in a news release the train heading to Hutchinson derailed about 9:30 a.m. Monday near Thurmond in the New River Gorge. CSX says 10 of the 97 empty rail cars and one of two locomotives derailed.

The statement says the derailed cars remained upright.

New River Gorge National River spokeswoman Julena Campbell says in a news release that the engine that derailed landed on its side near the New River. She said the train was traveling from Clifton Forge, Virginia, to pick up a coal shipment.

She says no diesel fuel spilled and that crews are working to remove 5,000 gallons of fuel from the locomotive.

She says the track is expected to reopen Tuesday.

“It sounds like that there was a slide, probably caused by all the wet weather, that slid across the tracks. Initially that’s looking like that’s what caused it.”

Campbell also said it was a CSX train and the locomotive is off of the tracks. Ten empty coal cars have also derailed. The locomotive and the 10 cars did not go into the river, but the locomotive was on its side.

    No one was hurt.

HazMat crews from CSX were on the scene to help with cleanup.

Officials say the train was headed from Clifton Forge, Virginia, to Peach Creek, West Virginia, to pick up coal.

CSX officials, National Park Service Rangers and Fayette County fire crews are on the scene.

Train derails east of Nappanee, weather may have been a factor

    May 3, 2018 3:01 AM EST

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. – Kosciusko County deputies responded to a CSX train derailment east of Nappanee between County Road 15 and County Road 17 early Thursday morning.

Officials say two people on board the train engine were injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment. They have since been released.

CSX says two locomotives and 8 railcars carrying 32 intermodal containers derailed.

There were no hazardous materials involved.

CR 15 is closed to traffic due to the derailment.

CSX says the train was headed to Chicago when it derailed.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but CSX says it appears weather may have been a factor.

CSX has begun clearing debris and railcars from the site in Nappanee where a westbound train derailed overnight during severe weather. We’ve determined a total of two locomotives and eight railcars carrying 32 intermodal containers derailed. No hazardous materials were involved in this incident. We’re also pleased to report that the two crew members have been released from the hospital after being treated for their injuries.

    Thursday morning statement from CSX

At approximately midnight last night, a westbound CSX intermodal train headed to Chicago, IL, derailed in Nappanee, IN. Our primary concern at this point is the well-being of the dedicated crew members who sustained non-life threatening injuries. CSX appreciates the swift assistance of the local first responders, who are on scene with CSX personnel to assess the situation. While the cause of this incident is under investigation, it appears that severe weather may have been a factor. The incident involved two locomotives and several intermodal containers. No other injuries have been reported.

Freight train derails in Delco: Amtrak Northeast Corridor service resuming, SEPTA Wilmington/Newark suspended

    Thursday, May 03, 2018 04:58PM
A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed under the I-95 overpass in Ridley Township, Delaware County affecting service on Amtrak and SEPTA.

Amtrak trains started rolling again through Crum Lynne nearly 11 hours after the partial train derailment that left a commuter mess.

Earlier at 30th Street Station in Center City, and in Wilmington, Delaware, commuters were stuck trying to find ways around the service disruptions.

    SEPTA's Wilmington-Newark line was suspended.

Then Amtrak's Northeast Corridor service between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. was also suspended after initially operating with delays.

While Amtrak resumed service, SEPTA announced the Wilmington-Newark line would remain suspended for the remainder of the day.

If needed, SEPTA will add p.m. rush-hour trains on the Media/Elwyn Line to accommodate passengers.

In addition, customers can find details on travel using alternate SEPTA modes.

SEPTA also expects to be able to operate some limited service on the Wilmington/Newark Line on Friday.

All possible options are being explored

"SEPTA Wilmington/Newark Line trains operate on these tracks, which are part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Multiple tracks remain out of service due to ongoing repair work," SEPTA said.

Around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Norfolk Southern freight train with two engines and 88 cars was five miles north of Marcus Hook, near the Eddystone and Crum Lynne stations, when the last two cars derailed.
No one was hurt, but the very last car tipped over spilling stones onto the tracks.

Crews hauled in cranes to help with the clearing effort.

While several tracks were running by late morning, Amtrak says Track 3, where the incident occurred, will remain closed for at least a few days for switch and railroad tie repairs.

Shake 'like a quake' as Auckland train derails

Passengers were trapped on a derailed train for 40 minutes in an incident that has crippled the busy Britomart Station in Auckland.

Three carriages of the train derailed as the train was leaving the station, scaring passengers who described the incident as a a sudden shake "like a small earthquake".

Trains coming in and out of the Auckland station have been suspended indefinitely.

Three of the train's six carriages came off the tracks as it was leaving the station with 33 people onboard. There are no reports of injuries.

Passenger Charles Stewart was travelling on the eastern line heading into Britomart station when the train derailed.

Everything was going smoothly and then there was a sudden shake "like a small earthquake" as the train came off the tracks.

The passengers were stuck on the train for about 40 minutes, a lot of people were ringing in to work to let their bosses know they would be late, Stewart said.

All the passengers appeared to be unhurt - but were a little annoyed.

AUT student Kirstin Elphick was on board when the train derailed and felt "absolutely freaked out" when the brakes slammed on.

"It felt like it was going really, really fast... all of a sudden it stopped."

The train looked like it was leaning against the tunnel, Elphick said.

It was "really annoying" that more information was not provided before the passengers got off the carriage - they had no idea how long they would be there for.

The train was stuck upright, with about 33 onboard but there appeared to be no injuries.

"The first priority is to get people off the train."

Britomart station will remain closed while that happened and the power would be turned off, he said.

It was hoped operations could return to normal after the passengers were taken off the train as there was a spare platform that could be used, he said.

Auckland Transport confirmed train services have been temporarily stopped.

"Auckland Transport advises that three carriages (on a six-carriage train) have come off the tracks meaning that the train is immobile," a spokesman said.

"The incident occurred at low speed as it was leaving platform 2 at around 9.40am. The train remains upright and there are no injuries.

Train Carrying 250,000 Liters of Fuel Derails on Kenyan Coast

A cargo train carrying 250,000 liters (66,000 gallons) of super petroleum, or unleaded gasoline, derailed off its tracks after taking a sharp turn along Kenya's eastern coast, forcing the closure of a major highway over the weekend, according to local reports.

The accident occurred early Sunday in Kibarani in Mombasa County, and prompted authorities to completely close off Makupa Causeway, the main link between the mainland and Mombasa Island, fearing a fire would break out after spillage of the highly flammable liquid, The Star, Kenya reported.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded until the highway was reopened Monday after experts determined the area was safe. No injuries were reported and the exact cause of the derailment is not yet determined.

The 16-wagon Kenya Railways train was headed towards Nairobi and was carrying fuel for Vivo Energy.

Maritime and Shipping Affairs Principal Secretary Nancy Karigithu said about 3,000 liters (790 gallons) leaked from the impacted wagons. Authorities have contained the fuel with foam and coolant, she said.

"The leakage came from two wagons, one of them was profuse. Luckily enough, no oil was spilled into the ocean," Karigithu said, as quoted by The Star, Kenya.

Karigithu added that experts are working to ensure the fuel does not enter the ocean and affect the marine system.

However, a number of conflicting reports, including one published from Reuters on Monday, suggested that some cargo plunged into the Indian Ocean. Mombasa police chief Johnstone Ipara told the news service a team of engineers and other local experts were working Monday to recover five train wagons that submerged in the ocean.

A witness also told Reuters the water that the wagons submerged into was slick with a substance that appeared to be a petroleum product.

But Karigithu insisted in a People Daily report posted Monday that the fuel has not reached the ocean.

"Contrary to reports, not a drop has spilled into the ocean, the ocean is about 500 meters from scene of derailment and we are managing the situation well. Our main priority now is to secure the lives of Kenyans first, the cause of the derailment will be established later," she said.

First responders have evacuated the surrounding area “for the safety of the neighboring public” and CSX said the evacuation order “will stay in place until further notice.”
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
“CSX is working closely with local firefighters and other first responders to assess the situation, and the safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan,” the company said.

    UPDATE 6:45 p.m. EST:
CSX has issued a statement saying that emergency officials have lifted the evacuation order for residents and businesses near the derailment site.
"People can safely return to homes and businesses beginning at 4 p.m. CST today, and US 41 will reopen to roadway traffic," the company said. "This decision was made after reviewing the results of highly sensitive air-quality monitoring and closely consulting with safety and emergency management experts on site. [Environmental] experts do not anticipate any adverse impacts to returning residents."
The railroad said environmental monitoring will continue during the cleanup and restoration process.

"ga brian" .. has been covering this de-railment for you since it happened last night. at this hour.. "new details" to share "from gibson county". ///////// "it's been almost 24 hours since a train wreck here in princeton indiana. as you can see behind, the fire is still burning." from the sky you can see what remains after a train wreck sunday night. the fires are still burning today. however, if you ask residents, it is a lot more calm today then last night. "me and my daughter and my grand daughter were sitting out by the pool when we heard what sounded like a jet engine making a very loud noise. and then we heard a crash and at that time we were scrambling to see what was going on." a rail car loaded with 30,000 gallons of liquid propane exploded. resulting in a ploom of smoke and fire. "it was kind of scary because of all the smoke and at first we weren't for sure what they had in the trains." the princeton fire department evacuated a half mile radius around the wreck. despite the severity, no one was injured in the incident. princeton fire chief mike pflug says the accident's location played a major factor. "you couldn't really have found a better location. it's isolated away from everything. it's far enough out of town that it hasn't really had much effect to the neighborhoods outside of where we've just evacuated." in all, 23 railcars derailed in the incident. five of those were carrying propane. at this time residents are being allowed to return to their homes and traffic is being opened back up on us 41. "everybody here i tell you what, that's how you handle these types of situations. is that you have a good team around you."

Passenger train derails in northwest Turkey

At least 10 dead, 73 injured in passenger train derailment in northwest Turkey: Health Ministry official

    TEKIRDAG, Turkey

At least 10 people were killed and 73 others injured after bogies of a passenger train derailed in Turkey’s northwestern Tekirdag province on Sunday, a Health Ministry official said.

"According to our first estimates, 10 people lost their lives and 73 people were injured," Eyup Gumus, the Turkish Health Ministry’s undersecretary, told Anadolu Agency.

The train, carrying 362 passengers and six train staff, was traveling from Edirne province to Istanbul when five bogies derailed near Sarilar village of Tekirdag’s Corlu district.

Around 100 ambulances have been sent to the scene, while it has also been reported that the Ministry of Health has dispatched air ambulances to the region.

Additionally, Turkish General Staff has also sent military helicopters to airlift the wounded passengers.

Mehmet Ceylan, Tekirdag’s Governor, said the accident was caused by heavy rains in the region.

Later the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications said in a statement the accident occurred after the railway track slipped down from its original spot due to torrential rains.

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also was informed about the incident by Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Arslan over the phone, a presidential source said.

A train has derailed north of Tucson near Interstate 10, officials said.

Flooding caused by heavy rains apparently contributed to the derailment, which occurred on the east side of the I-10 frontage road between Twin Peaks and Marana Roads, according to a post on Twitter by the Marana Police.

The crash has closed the frontage road, but I-10 remained open, although the Arizona Department of Transportation said backups were starting to occur on the interstate in the area.

Northwest Fire District officials posted video of the derailment on Twitter. They added they had been responding to swift-water rescue calls in the area after the heavy storm.

Egypt train accident: 55 injured as train derails in Giza province

At least 55 people were hurt on Friday in a train derailment in the province of Giza, the Egyptian Health Ministry said. Three carriages of the southbound train left the tracks in the town of Badrashin, the ministry said in a statement, without offering any details on the reasons for the derailment. The injured were taken to several nearby hospitals. This is the first serious railway incident in Egypt since February, when 10 people died in an accident in the town of Kom Hamada, Efe reported. Egypt’s worst-ever train tragedy was in 2002, when a fire broke out on a train traveling from Cairo to the southern city of Luxor, leaving 376 people dead. Rail accidents are frequent in Egypt due to the poor condition of tracks and rolling stock and to the lack of a modern system of signaling and traffic control.

Freight train derails in Saint-Polycarpe near Quebec-Ontario border

    July 17, 2018 6:39 am

A Canadian Pacific freight train derailed Monday night in the town of Saint-Polycarpe, Que., just east of the Ontario border.

Environment Ministry spokesman Stéphane Dégarie says 25 of the 95 cars derailed and there was no spill of hazardous material.

Two cars containing propane went into a river that runs through the municipality while two other cars also carrying propane came to rest on the riverbank.

Dégarie said there is no threat to the environment because the cars are intact and there are no leaks.

There was minor leak of vegetable oil from one car and Dégarie said steps were being taken to plug the leak and recover the spilled oil.

There were no injuries or evacuations because of the derailment, which happened at about 7 p.m.

There was no word on what may have caused the derailment. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says it will send an investigator to the scene on Tuesday morning.

Union Pacific train derails between Twin Peaks and Avra Valley

    Drugs found amidst cleanup

Monsoon season keeps emergency responders busy. Over the course of four hours the afternoon of last Tuesday, July 10, the Northwest Fire District received 34 emergency calls. One call, at 3:13 p.m., was for a stranded motorist near Twin Peaks Road. And at 3:15 p.m., as they drove out to the scene, a Union Pacific train derailed in the same area, scattering 27 rail cars across the train tracks and surrounding area.

“There was a bit of irony that we were already on our way,” said Brian Keeley, NWFD Captain and Public Information Officer. “So it was lucky, we were right on it.”

The derailment caused no injuries, according to Jeff DeGraff, Arizona director of media relations at Union Pacific. Two crew members were on board, however they were at the front of the train, whereas the derailment occurred toward the middle.

As of print time, the cause of the derailment was still under investigation. Union Pacific will release an official announcement once the cleanup and investigation is finished.

“The flooding and heavy rain could play a role,” DeGraff said. “But we’re holding off until we can do a full examination of the tracks.”

The fire department’s role was mainly for hazardous materials management. Although hazmat crews were dispatched, no hazardous materials were found on scene, according to the Northwest Fire District.

Workers did uncover a package containing drugs at the cleanup site.

“Union Pacific Police recovered a package of suspected narcotics from the wreckage,” said DeGraff. “There was no identifying packaging. It was turned over to Marana PD for destruction.”

The Marana Police Department is still investigating the package. Union Pacific also mentioned that the condition of the suspicious package “exposed” its contents.

The derailment obstructed two sets of tracks. Responders cleared one set of tracks on July 11 and sent some trains through, in an attempt to prevent any further delays. The second set of tracks was cleared on July 12.

Because of the intensely busy day for emergency calls caused by monsoon rains, local agencies assisted Northwest Fire due to mutual aid agreements. The Marana Police Department, Tucson Fire Department, Golder Ranch Fire District, Town of Marana, Pima County Sheriff and the Arizona Department of Public Safety all joined the effort.

“Public safety is a team effort,” Keeley said. “No one person could take care of all of this, it requires a network.”

Union Pacific coal train derails at local crossing

RIESEL, Texas (KWTX) Ten cars of a 150-car Union Pacific Railroad coal train derailed late Monday afternoon at the Mount Moriah Road crossing along State Highway 6, just past the Highway 6-Highway 164 split.

    No one was injured.

The train, which originated in Wyoming, was hauling coal to a power plant in Riesel.

The cause of the derailment, which was reported at around 5 p.m. Monday, is said to be from a shifted track due to unstable ballast rock.

“We’ll take a look at the track, we’ll take a look at the cars and we’ll be looking at that throughout the night,” Union Pacific spokesman Jeff DeGraff said.

The derailment may require delays or rerouting of other trains.

“We’ll make those decisions once we determine how much work it’s going to take to get the track reopened,” he said.

DeGraff said they are "fortunate" because there are some options for rerouting trains around Central Texas.

Crews will work through the night to clear the tracks and begin cleaning up the spilled coal, he said.

"We expect the work to last through the night and into the morning," said DeGraff.

Egyptian passenger train derails near city of Aswan; 6 hurt

It is not clear what caused the train to derail in southern Egypt, on Sunday, July 29, 2018. (Aswan Governorate via AP)
Eight of the train’s carriages were derailed and lifting tools, cranes and maintenance teams were dispatched to the site

Egypt’s railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management

LUXOR, Egypt: An Egyptian passenger train derailed Sunday near the southern city of Aswan, injuring at least six people and prompting authorities to fire the chief of the country's railways.
It was not clear what caused the derailment, which took place near the Salwa train station in Kom Ombo, north of Aswan, the Transportation Ministry said. Eight of the train's carriages were derailed and lifting tools, cranes and maintenance teams were dispatched to the site, the ministry added.
Khaled Megahed, spokesman for the Health Ministry, says the injured were taken to hospital.
Hours after the incident, the head of the railways authority, Sayed Salem was fired, according to a statement from Transportation Minister Hesham Arafat who appointed Ashraf Raslan as acting head of the authority.
The accident comes two weeks after another passenger train derailed in Cairo's twin city of Giza, when at least 55 people were injured.
Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management. Official figures show that 1,793 train accidents took place in 2017.
In March, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said the government lacks about 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or $14.1 billion, to overhaul the run-down railway system. El-Sissi spoke a day after a passenger train collided with a cargo train, killing at least 12 people, including a child.
Last August, two passenger trains collided just outside the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, killing 43 people. In 2016, at least 51 people were killed when two commuter trains collided near Cairo.
s are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and vehicles and poor enforcement of traffic laws.

Train derails on Farley Rd. in Wendell, MA

    Aug 04, 2018 08:04 PM EDT

WENDALL, Mass. (WWLP) - A train carrying hydrocholoric acid derailed in Wendell overnight.

Six cars on a Pan Am train derailed just before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday. Four of those cars overturned just off of Farley Road.

Wendell and New Salem Fire Chief Joseph Cuneo said there were no passengers on board at the time, but some of the the train cars were filled with hydrocholoric acid.

Cuneo told 22News the heavy rains may have been a factor in the derailment.

"We can't tell for sure, but that's the supposition," said Chief Cuneo. "There's a washout, it's clear. it's obvious down there."

Chief Cuneo said the derailment did not cause any of the hydrocholeric acid to leak and this is not a hazmat situation.

"The primary concern right now is stabilizing the hydrocholoric acid tank car," said Massachusetts State Fire Marshall Peter Ostroskey. "The railroad is taking care of that operation."

Massachusetts State Fire Marshall Peter Ostroskey said hazmat will be on standby during this process in case a leak does happen.

After all of the cars are turned upright, the tracks will be cleared and repaired by Pan Am.

Cuneo said once that process is complete, the rails will reopen. He did not have a timeline for how long the cleanup might take.

Train derails, dumps 4,000 gals fuel, waste into Delaware

DEPOSIT, NEW YORK - At 2:01 am Thursday morning, a train carrying various types of waste, including hazardous materials, derailed east of Binghamton near Hale Eddy Road, on the Delaware River reported the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway.

Reports say the 63-car train was traveling west from New Jersey to Binghamton along the West Branch of the Delaware River with four locomotives. Reportedly one car contained corrosive material and 13 cars contained hazardous contaminated soil, the rest were either empty or carried construction debris or non-hazardous soils. Diesel fuel, up to 4,000 gallons, spilled into the West Branch of the Delaware from at least one of the locomotives.

According to the Friends of the Upper Delaware River, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation said “the train was carrying an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel and a large percentage has spilled into the river.” At least 2 rail cars are in the river.

Emergency response teams are on site as well as the National Park Service. A State of Emergency was declared for the Town of Deposit due to severe flooding following heavy storms Tuesday night.

The train derailment was believed to have been caused by railroad tracks and a culvert washing out due to the storms.

Fast moving water is making it difficult to capture the oil, resulting in some of the fuel being swept downstream, potentially impacting water quality, river uses and wildlife for long distances

Train carrying non-hazardous material derails in Wauwatosa, no injuries reported

WAUWATOSA, WI -- A train derailment in Wauwatosa late Monday night, Aug. 20 threw 13 cars off the track and cut power to some We Energies customers. It happened around 10 p.m. just north of the Mayfair Collection near Penzeys Spices.

On Tuesday, Union Pacific Railroad officials worked as fast and as safely as they could to clear the derailment. The train was carrying a non-hazardous material. The battalion chief believes it was some type of construction sand.

"It seems like it's pretty contained on the tracks," said Tracy Justham, onlooker

By noon Tuesday, more than 12 hours after the derailment, several toppled cars could be seen about a quarter-mile down the track from Justham and her two sons.

Jimmy Justham said his father lost power overnight, about the same time the rail cars lost control. It made Jimmy and his younger brother curious about what it takes to clean up such a mess.

"We thought if we weren't in emergency personnel or workers' way, we'd come back and see what was going on," said Tracy Justham.

No injuries were reported, and at least one track appeared to be clear by early Tuesday afternoon, as the cars slowly rolled by the scene.

"It's going to be quite a while. They've got quite a few workers out here," said Tracy Justham.

We Energies reported 48 customers lost power because of the derailment, but power has since been restored.

The cause of the derailment has not been released.

A picture from the scene late Sunday showed rail cars toppled over, with one sticking far into the air.

WRAL reported that the train’s crew was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Probe launched after Tasmanian train derails

    September 22, 2018

An investigation has been launched after a freight train came off the tracks and injured two pedestrians in Tasmania this morning.

Emergency services rushed to Devonport Wharf at 9am after receiving a report that an automated TasRail train carrying cement was about to derail.

About nine minutes later, the driverless train came off the tracks and hit a fence on Formby Road, just 100 metres from the Harbour Master Cafe.

A woman sustained cuts and abrasions to her head after the impacted fencing material struck her, Tasmania Police told 9news.com.au.

A man aged in his 40s also suffered cuts and abrasions, along with a suspected broken elbow.

Both pedestrians were taken to North West Regional Hospital.

The Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ATSB) are now investigating the incident.

“We’ve got four investigators on the way to the site as we speak, and they will be commencing the evidence collection phase,” ATSB Executive Director Nat Nagy said this afternoon.

The probe will involve examination of the train, recorded data, and collecting witness statements.

“We will also look at how the operator and emergency services responded to the situation,” Mr Nagy said.

Harbour Master Cafe owner Leigh Murphy has told The Mercury he heard a “loud rumbling noise” moments before the derailment.

“I thought it was an excavator coming off the Spirit of Tasmania,” Mr Murphy told the newspaper.

Motorists are advised Formby Road remains closed between Steele Street and Best Street.
