Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

A Fracking Mess: Sand Train Derails in Miles

    Aug. 10, 2017 10:16 am

MILES, TX — A train has derailed just east of downtown Miles. According to Texas Pacifico Railroad who operates the rolling stock along the old Orient rail line, six cars went off the rails. All of the cars were carrying fracking sand for the oil fields west and south of San Angelo.

The derailment happened late Wednesday night at 11:15 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety told KTXS. Our first notification came at 6:30 a.m. when an eyewitness contacted us.

There were no injuries that were directly caused by the derailment. DPS told KTXS that an occupant of one vehicle suffered minor injuries after hitting debris, a rail tie, from the derailment on CR 357. The vehicle experienced "severe damage to its undercarriage," DPS reported. The vehicle’s driver was not injured, but a passenger sustained minor injuries and was taken to Shannon Medical Center, KTXS reported.

In addition, DPS reported that a large rail tie landed in the roadway of U.S. 67, the highway the railroad tracks are next to.

Texas Pacifico said they are working to get the cars cleared and the rails repaired. With no injuries or other damage other than to the railroad assets themselves, Texas Pacifico is required to conduct its own investigations. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is not required to get directly involved. While crews are clearing the tracks, U.S. 67 is down to one lane on the westbound side.

Texas Pacifico said one car will be "righted" and placed back on the tracks, the other five will be moved away from the tracks.

Coal train derails along Clark Fork River in western Montana

    Coal train derailment near Noxon

About 30 cars of a Montana Rail Link freight train carrying coal derailed Sunday near Noxon, just east of the Montana-Idaho border.

NOXON — A coal train carrying 30 cars derailed next to the Cabinet Gorge Reservoir near Noxon in northwestern Montana late Sunday night, according to the train’s operator, Montana Rail Link.

Company spokesperson Jim Lewis said in a statement that the train was not hauling hazardous material and that nobody was injured in the accident.

Sanders County Emergency Manager Bill Naegeli said that he hadn’t been out to the scene yet, so he couldn’t provide any additional information. He did confirm that coal isn’t considered a hazardous material, however.

“It comes from the ground to begin with and it’s a fossil fuel and it doesn’t break down,” Naegeli said before the connection to his phone broke up.

He said the wreck occurred at about mile marker 20 on Highway 200, between Noxon and Heron.

Cabinet Gorge Reservoir is part of the Clark Fork River that eventually flows into the Columbia River and then, finally, the Pacific Ocean.

Missoula resident Nate Haflich was out boating on the reservoir on Monday and took photos of the scene that show large amounts of coal that had spilled right on the shoreline.

The incident remains under investigation and it is unclear how long the tracks will be closed.

The clean-up continues this afternoon, where a freight train transporting Toyota Tundras and Tacomas derailed on the South Side of San Antonio early Friday morning, causing a power outage for hundreds of people in the area.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. at Briggs Avenue and Quintana Road. The San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police department showed up with a Hazmat crew and several trucks, which is standard procedure for a train derailment. None of the train cars were carrying hazardous material and no injuries were reported.

Rail yard workers were “pushing” or “shoving” between 10 to 12 train cars, then trouble started with a single runaway train.

San Antonio Fire Department Battalion Chief, Russell Johnson explained, “They were shoving cars. What they call shoving cars is when they are getting ready to pull them online. They will pull them apart and then push them together and make sure they are all hooked together. Somehow it got away from them and it started rolling towards the main track. It hit the derailment track.”

About 10 cars jumped the tracks and wrecked, striking a utility pole which caused a power outage for around 6,000 businesses and homes for a duration of about 4 hours. Power was eventually restored around 9 a.m.

Spokeswoman Melissa Sparks of Toyota said there were about 40 new Toyota Tundras and Tacomas aboard the train, and it's too early to tell whether any of the trucks were damaged.

UP: Engine of Burhwal-Balamau Passenger Train Derails at Sitapur; No injuries Reported

    Updated: September 18, 2017 11:18 PM IST
Lucknow, September 18: Engine of Burhwal-Balamau passenger train on Monday derailed at Sitapur, however, no casualties have been reported. The officials of railway and police are at the site. The reason for the train going off the track has to be ascertained.

This is the sixth incident of this month.

    • On September 17, three wagons of an empty goods train derailed near Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district. No one was injured in the incident and the trains were running unhampered.
    • On September 9, an empty bogie of Sealdah Express derailed at Jammu railway station while it was being brought to the platform from the washing area. No one was injured in the incident.

The trains had derailed on September 7:

    1. Six wagons of a goods train derailed near Khandala, Maharashtra.
    2. Engine and Power car of Rajdhani Express derailed at Shivaji Bridge in the national capital.
    3. Seven coaches of Shaktipunj Express derailed in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. No one was injured in the incident as the train had maintained a low speed, said Anil Saxena, a railway ministry spokesperson.

As per a report, the new railway minister Piyush Goyal has decided to recruit one lakh people in the ‘sanraksha shreynee’- that is the safety category. In an effort to reduce derailments the railway needs manpower besides technology and equipment.

Also, Railway Ministry will soon start a track renewal exercise with an aim to cut down on train derailments. A report of Economic Times suggested that around 2,000 km of track would be renewed by the end of the year.

Train derails, crashes into house in NW Atlanta

    4:37 PM. EDT October 05, 2017

ATLANTA - A CSX train derailed early Thursday morning and crashed into a house on Andrews Street in northwest Atlanta.

Fire department officials said the train was moving 14 miles per hour when it derailed. Nine cars were completely off the train tracks and five were only partially off, totaling 14 cars.

"Naturally, when the train comes by it shakes the house," said DeAngelo Rivers Jr., whose father's home was destroyed by the derailment. "Today it was making a lot of noise, and then the train hit the house just as he was getting out of bed, and it pushed him toward the kitchen door.

"I'm trying to believe this is real."

Investigators said a train can derail at a slow speed if there's something wrong with the tracks. The train was some two miles long with a whopping 190 cars, providing tons of momentum, even at 14 miles an hour.

According to CSX Spokesperson Rob Doolittle, the train was traveling from Waycross, Ga., to Cincinnati, Ohio.

The cars were not carrying any hazardous materials, so further evacuations were not needed. According to Atlanta Fire, the train was transporting sand, rocks and dirt.

Freight train derails and catches fire in central Sweden

Freight train derails and catches fire in central Sweden
A train carrying dangerous goods derailed and caught fire in central Sweden early on Thursday morning.

The 36-carriage train derailed by the station in Ludvika, Dalarna, bringing train traffic to a stop as ten of its carriages covered lay over five tracks.

"It's a long freight train and one of the carriages was on fire, with ten-metre high flames. The fire seems to have extinguished itself," Peter Persson, a local police officer who was on duty at the time, told TT.

"It will take a long time to clean up, according to the information I have. There is no other effect on traffic in the area," Persson said.

The alarm was raised shortly before 2.30 am, and it is still unclear what caused the derailment.

The train driver was not injured and has spoken to police, though he is not suspected of any wrongdoing. He told police that the train "bounced" and that it was a light on board the train which caught fire.

For the moment, there is no sign that any of the dangerous goods leaked from the train.

The accident has caused disruption to traffic between Borlänge and Hallsberg, Borlänge and Kil, and Västerås and Ludvika in both directions, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. There is no information regarding when traffic in the area will return to normal.

"Contact lines have been damaged and there's a derailment, so it could take a long time. I don't have a specific forecast, but it's a matter of days and maybe weeks," said Per Aronsson from the Transport Administration.

Trains have been replaced by buses on the affected routes.

33 dead after freight train carrying fuel derails in Congo

Up to 33 people were feared dead Sunday in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a freight train carrying fuel plunged into a ravine.

The UN’s radio Okapi spoke of 33 fatalities with others injured or burned in the accident that occurred in the sprawling mineral-rich province of Katanga, which is the size of Spain.

“Up until now the toll is eight dead and several injured. The toll could be significantly higher,” Jean-Marie Tshizainga, the minister of mines of Lualaba province told AFP.

The train, in which the victims were travelling illegally, was running between the country’s second city Lubumbashi to Luena in Katanga.

The train was transporting 13 oil tankers and derailed while climbing a slope near the station of Lubudi. It fell into a ravine and the tankers caught fire, radio Okapi said.

“It’s a freight train that derailed and it wasn’t supposed to be carrying passengers. If there were people on board, we consider them to be illegal travellers,” said Sylvestre Ilunga Ilukamba, a senior official from the national railway company.

Katanga has witnessed several deadly train accidents. In 2014, a freight train derailed killing 74 people and injured 163, according to officials but the Red Cross said up to 200 corpses had been buried.

The national news agency a month later spoke of 136 deaths.

Another train accident in July 1987 near the Zambian border killed 150 people after crashing into a truck.

Train Derails near Hells Gate, BC; Spills Fuel into Fraser River

     http://earthfirstjournal.org/newswire/2017/11/26/train-derails-near...

A Canadian Pacific Rail train has derailed near Hells Gate, B.C. in the Fraser Canyon and leaked some fuel.

The train derailed due to a rock slide on Thursday (Nov 23).

The B.C. Environmental Emergency Program posted an update Friday morning.

They will be working with Canadian Pacific Railway to monitor the spill response activities and assess environmental impacts.

“Fuel was leaking out of the vent line hole, over the steep bank and into the Fraser River at a fairly steady flow,” the update said.

The hole has been temporarily patched.

4 train accidents in less than 12 hours kill 7, injure 11

     http://www.newsnation.in/india-news/4-train-accidents-in-less-than-...

    New Delhi:

Lucknow/New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) Four train accidents in less than 12 hours in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha killed seven people and injured at least 11, officials said on Friday.

Three of the accidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh and one from Odisha.

There were two derailments, including one in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district that killed three people on Friday morning, one incident of an engine decoupling from the wagon and a train hitting a car at an unmanned crossing.

The spate of accidents began at 7.19 pm on Thursday when a local train hit a Bolero vehicle at an unmanned crossing near Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, killing four people and injuring two.

The vehicle, packed with people belonging to a marriage party, was hit at Matha Bhusunda village under the Musafirkhana police station, an official said.

Then, at 4.18 am, 13 coaches of the Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express, on its way from Goa to Patna, derailed near Manikpur in Uttar Pradesh, killing three people, including a six-year-old boy and his father, and injuring nine.

The Patna-bound passenger train, which derailed soon after leaving the Manikpur Railway Station in Chitrakoot district, was moving slowly as a result of which casualties were less, officials said.

According to ADG (Law and Order), Anand Kumar, prima facie a fractured railway track led to the accident “as per local assessment”.

“Another possible reason being cited is that due to some technical problem, emergency brakes were slammed, causing the derailment,” he said, adding that it can be confirmed only by railway authorities.

Sources in the railways said that the rail fracture was the likely cause of the derailment. However, they said an official statement can only be made after a probe by the commissioner of Railway Safety.

Train carrying molten sulfur derails in Lakeland

    Posted: Nov 27 2017 04:47AM EST

    - Lakeland residents were asked to stay indoors after a train carrying hazardous materials derailed, authorities said.

Polk County firefighters are investigating the crash in the area of Kathleen and Strickland roads. A medical call was received around 1:50 a.m. and a fire crew found several train cars rolled over and mangled, according to a media release. Officials confirm there is a molten sulfur leak and there have been no reported injuries.

Officials were asking residents along Strickland Road to stay inside their homes, but have since rescinded the request. However, spectators are asked to stay away from the derailment site. CSX and state officials are now working to clean the spillage and removed the damaged train cars

Kathleen Road is likely to remain closed between Galloway and Spivey roads until early this evening. There are currently no evacuations and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

SkyFOX flew over the scene, showing several train carts off-track and toppled over. A yellow substance was splattered on the ground and on the disheveled carts themselves. Crews on scene described a smell similar to rotten eggs

    emitting from the crash.

Sidney firefighters were called out an early morning derailment on the Union Railroad four miles west of Sidney Christmas Eve morning with the report of possible hazardous materials involved. There was no haz-mat incident, but more than 20 cars were off the tracks, stopping rail traffic until Christmas Day. When traffic resumed trains moved slowly through the area of the mishap.

Union Pacific Railroad officials are investigating the cause of a train derailment near Sidney Saturday.

The westbound train derailed 22 cars near Sidney Christmas Eve between 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., according to UP Media Relations Director Kristin South.

"We're still investigating the cause," South said Tuesday.

She said the derailment blocked a crossing, but the crossing was opened by noon Sunday.

The train was not carrying any hazardous materials, she added. South said it was a manifest train, a mix of commodities.

Amtrak passenger train derails near station in Savannah, Ga.

USA Today NetworkEditors, USA TODAY Published 11:46 p.m. ET Jan. 3, 2018

An Amtrak passenger train derailed near Savannah, Ga., Wednesday night, according to local media reports.

WTOC-TV in Savannah reported the train derailed about 1,000 yards shorts of the train station on Seaboard Coastline Drive.

Southside Fire EMS officials told WTOC there were 311 passengers on board the train.

Emergency responders were seen hauling their gear through the snow and 23-degree temperature to get to the stranded passengers. There were no reports of injuries.

Passenger Joel Potischman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he boarded the train shortly after 9 a.m. ET in Delray Beach, Fla., headed home to New York.

Along the way, winter storm weather affected the tracks and as the train approached the Savannah station, an announcement was made that a switch was frozen, Potischman told the AJC.

“The goal was to overshoot it and back in to the platform,” he said.

The switch instead opened, causing the cars at the back of the train to derail, Potischman told the newspaper.

“Things are calm,” he said. “We’re in the car; they’ve not made any announcements about evacuating.”

The Silver Meteor line runs daily between Miami and Boston, according to Amtrak's website.

In December, three people died and dozens were injured when 13 train cars jumped the tracks during the Amtrak Cascades inaugural run along a new bypass route. The train carried 85 passengers and crew members.

The crash south of Seattle occurred on tracks where equipment for automatic braking, which Congress has required on all railroads by the end of 2018, was installed but was still being tested.

Train derails in Pointe Coupee Parish; LA 1 still closed in both directions

    Thursday, January 4th 2018, 8:47 am EST

    LABARRE, LA (WAFB) -

A train went off the tracks along LA 1 in Pointe Coupee Parish between New Roads and Morganza Thursday.

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office reports 23 cars have derailed. Officials say all of the cars were empty, except for one that was half full of isobutylene, which is a colorless gas used to make various fuel additives.

Deputies say no leaks have been reported at this time and there were no injuries. They added homes and businesses a mile in each direction of the derailment have been evacuated as a precaution.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) reports LA 1 is closed in both directions between LA 420 and Airport Road in Pointe Coupee Parish. Drivers on LA 1 South should turn onto LA 420, then turn right onto Airport Road, and then get back onto LA 1. Drivers on LA 1 North should turn right onto Airport Road, then turn left onto LA 420, and then get back onto LA 1.

A spokesperson with Louisiana State Police says they expect LA 1 to reopen sometime Thursday night, but that it's a long process to bring in the appropriate equipment to right the derailed cars.

Pointe Coupee Parish officials offered the following update around 8 p.m. Thursday night:

An update on PCFD5 operations at the train derailment: As of this time, clean up crews are working to clear the wreckage from the scene adjacent to LA 1. LA 1 between Airport Rd and LA 420 is expected to remain closed until the wreckage is cleared, it's unknown to us how long that will take. Time estimates, when available, would most likely be posted on the Pointe Coupee Sheriff's Office Facebook page and/ or the Louisiana State Police Facebook page

One of Metro’s newest trains derails near Farragut North

     https://wtop.com/local/2018/01/metro-derailment-farragut-north/slid...

WASHINGTON — Metro and D.C. Fire & EMS safely evacuated 63 people from a Metro Red Line train that derailed Monday morning (Jan 15) between the Metro Center and Farragut North stations.

The front end of the new 7000 series Metro train derailed about 500 feet from Metro Center platform, Metro said.

It was the first derailment on the main line for any of the new rail cars, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said during a morning news conference.

Multiple rail cars, possibly as many as seven of the train’s eight, derailed.

Stessel said derailments are  “rare.”  The last derailment occurred in East Falls Church, Virginia, in July 2016.

     http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Beat/2018/Red-Line-Metro-T...

"..The derailment immediately set off questions from officials and riders about how the derailment happened, given that Metro has spent millions of dollars and the past two years working to catch up on maintenance issues and fix problematic rail segments after a woman died from smoke inhalation on a Yellow Line train in 2015..."

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2018/01/15/red-l...

"..the initial call was for possible smoke on the tracks at Farragut North, but the fire department found no signs of a fire around the derailment. The train’s rear railcars appeared to have come off the tracks, he said. He could not say how many.

The fire department cleared the scene about 9 a.m.

Stessel said the train operator is cooperating with investigators and will be subject to standard post incident alcohol and drug screenings. He could not say how much experience the operator had, only that it was a male operator.

Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans, who was briefed by Metro CEO Paul Wiedefeld Monday morning was hocked by the news.

“It’s like, god, didn’t we do all of the fixing, the bad areas, Safetrack?” he said, he said referring to the agency’s year-long track maintenance program. “All that stuff was intended to prevent stuff like this from happening.”

Johannesburg - A second Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) train was derailed between Pretoria and Germiston in Gauteng on Wednesday.

The train was derailed after clamps were stolen that keep the track attached to the sleepers, according to United National Transport Union (UNTU) general secretary Steve Harris.

"Fortunately, nobody was injured. We are very grateful for that, but it could have been fatal to both the train crew and commuters," said Harris.

This incident comes only eight days after two trains collided at the train station in Geldenhuys, Germiston where at least 200 commuters were injured.

'It's like a bloodbath': Up to 16 passengers are injured as a train derails after smashing into a barricade at '50 to 70kmh' in major incident at Sydney's Richmond station

    • Up to 16 people have been injured and three were trapped on the crashed train
    • Two people are severely injured, train carriages were left splattered with blood
    • The suburban train reportedly hit barrier at Richmond Station, northwest Sydney
    • Rescue helicopters and emergency services have been dispatched to the scene

Up to 16 people have been injured after a train overshot and hit a barricade in Sydney's north on Monday morning.

The suburban train hit a safety barrier at Richmond station at the end of the T1 Western Line, in the city's north-west, about 10am.

Three people were freed after being trapped in the front carriage, but Fire and Rescue NSW personnel remain on the scene.

Some of the injured passengers were carried off the blood-splattered train on stretchers, while others treated by paramedics outside the station.

An injured rail worker was among the people treated by paramedics after Monday's crash

A 70-year-old woman has been taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment and two others have been transported to Nepean.

Witnesses have described a scene of chaos, with the train apparently hitting the buffer at the end of the line 'at speed'.

Brett, who witnessed the crash, told Fairfax he saw the train smash into the barrier at 50 to 70 kilometres per hour.

I witnessed all the people through the window, they were just flying through the air,' he said.

'I was straight onto the train as soon as I seen people were injured ... I walked through and seen the blood everywhere. There is absolutely blood everywhere, it's a big hit.

'Inside the train is like a bloodbath. All the dividers in between the carriages are smashed, completely crushed flat on every single one, that's how fast it was going.'

Fire and Rescue New South Wales had one crew on the scene within minutes and six more on route to the crash, described by emergency services as a 'major incident'.

'Paramedics are currently responding to a train incident at Richmond. Triple Zero (000) call came in just before 10am,' a  statement from NSW Ambulance said.

'Initial reports suggests 10 patients are being assessed for minor injuries and 2 patients for more severe injuries.

'Seventeen NSW Ambulance resources are responding as well as three rescue helicopters.'

Reported injuries include a hip injury, spinal injuries, a collarbone injury, possible leg injuries and cuts and bruises.

A rail union official said: 'Richmond is a dead-end line and there is just a buffer stop at the end of the rail line, and he has hit it by the sounds of it.'

He said most of the injured had suffered 'bumps and bruises', indicating the collision occurred at slow speed, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Witnesses claim the train failed to stop as it pulled into the station, hitting a barrier at the end of the platform before falling off the tracks.

Pictures from the scene show considerable damage caused to both the inside and outside of the train, as well as to the platform.

The station is the final stop on the Richmond line and all trains on the line to Central.

Sydney Trains CEO Howard Collins said the incident will be investigated but it was too early to say what caused the crash

Sydney Trains CEO Howard Collins said the incident will be investigated but it was too early to say what caused the crash.

'I understand that the train on Platform 2 at Richmond has hit the buffers pretty hard,' he said.

'It is a Waratah train, it is one of our new trains, so we'll have a lot of good information about the train but it is too early to say.

'My first thoughts are those people who have suffered some sort of injury. We don't believe any of those are life threatening or serious.'

Several people were rescued from the wreckage of the carriages that derailed next to the Pioltello Limito station in the morning rush hour.

The cause of the accident is not yet clear but a collapse of the rail track is under investigation.

Witnesses said the train trembled for a few minutes before the accident.

The Trenord train, carrying some 250 people, was heading to Milan's Porta Garibaldi station from Cremona when it derailed at about 07:00 local time (06:00 GMT).

The train was travelling at normal speed when the accident happened, a spokesperson for Trenord told Reuters news agency. Services in the area were halted for hours.

The identities of the victims have not been confirmed, but Italian media report that they are all women.

"A train can derail for only two reasons; either through a structural collapse of the track or a collapse of the train. This is the first thing that needs to be cleared up," said Raffaele Cattaneo, president of the regional council.

RFI, which manages the rail network, said there was a rupture in the track but that it was unclear whether this was a cause or a consequence of the accident.

"The rail track collapse was detected 2.3km [1.4 miles] before the spot of the accident... but it is premature to establish the dynamics of the accident," said regional director Vincenzo Macello.

    Train derails in downtown Quincy

    QUINCY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - UPDATE 01/30/2018 12:17 p.m.

A CSX Spokesperson released this statement about the spill:
Just after 6:00 a.m. today, approximately seven rail cars on a CSX train headed to Waycross, Ga., derailed near the Pat Thomas Parkway grade crossing in Quincy, Fla. No injuries or environmental impacts were reported. Two of the rail cars spilled a small amount of adipic acid, which is a solid chemical commonly used in the production of gelatin food products. While this product poses no safety risk to the public, CSX contractors on site are taking standard precautions as they work to clean up the area. The train consists of two locomotives, 53 loaded rail cars of mixed freight and 34 empty rail cars. CSX thanks the Quincy Fire Department and the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office for their quick response and continued support on site, and we appreciate the patience of the surrounding community as we work to safely restore this area

    From WCTV:
A train in downtown Quincy, Florida has flipped onto its side, the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office confirms

GCSO says the train was traveling along Pat Thomas Parkway when it derailed near Live Oak Street.

    There are no reported injuries.

GCSO says CSX, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the Florida Department of Emergency Management have arrived on scene.

CSX also has a crane on the way to move the train cars.

Authorities say material from the train did spill, but it is described as an "environmental hazard solid" and does not pose a safety threat to the public. The DEP is on hand to make sure it's cleaned up safely and securely.

An Amtrak train traveling from New York to Miami collided with a freight train early Sunday, killing at least two people, injuring at least 70 others and spilling thousands of gallons of fuel, according to officials.

Amtrak said Train 91, which was carrying eight crew members and 139 passengers, collided with a CSX train near Cayce, S.C., around 2:35 a.m.

“The lead engine derailed, as well as some passenger cars,” Amtrak said in a statement.

The Lexington County spokesman, Harrison Cahill, said at a news conference early Sunday that about 70 people with injuries had been hospitalized. He said the injuries ranged from small scratches and bumps to broken bones, but could not say if any were life-threatening.

It was the second major crash involving an Amtrak train in less than a week. On Wednesday, a train carrying Republican members of Congress to a retreat in West Virginia hit a garbage truck in rural Virginia, killing a passenger in the truck.

The cause of the crash on Sunday was not immediately clear. The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it was beginning an investigation into the collision.

The train, operating Amtrak’s Silver Star service, originated at Pennsylvania Station in New York and was bound for Miami. The Lexington Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter that the crash occurred near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Road, close to Pine Ridge, S.C.

All passengers have been removed from the train, officials said. Capt. Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said that the uninjured had been taken to a Red Cross reception site.

“We know that they are shaken up quite a bit,” he said. “We know that this is unlike anything else that they have ever been through, so we wanted to get them out of the cold, get them out of the weather, get them to a warm place.”

The Red Cross said on Twitter that “disaster trained volunteers” were responding to the accident.

Mr. Cahill said a hazardous materials team had been called to the site because roughly 5,000 gallons of fuel had spilled as a result of the collision.

“We were able to secure two leaks of fuel from the trains,” he said, adding there was “no threat to the public at this time.”

“This is not our first train derailment,” said Derrec Becker of the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, citing a fatal derailment in January 2005. A 42-car freight train operated by Norfolk Southern crashed into a smaller train near Granitteville, S.C., killing eight people, injuring more than 200 and leaking chlorine gas.

“It’s unfortunate that we have two fatalities,” he said of the crash on Sunday. “Our hearts are with those families right now.”

Senator Tim E. Scott, Republican of South Carolina, also expressed his condolences on Twitter to the families of those killed and those injured.

Derek Pettaway, a passenger on the train, told CNN that he had been asleep at the time of the crash, but that officials reacted swiftly and passengers were led off quickly.

“Nobody was panicking, people were in shock more than anything,” he said, according to The State’s website.

He said it was too dark to see much, but most of the cars he glimpsed ended up off the tracks but upright.

Amtrak has had a number of high-profile crashes and derailments over the years, leading to criticism from consumer advocates and government officials. Federal Railroad Administration statistics have shown that in recent years the agency has had an average of about two derailments a month, accounting for about one-quarter of all the accidents it reports.

Most derailments, however, have rarely caused more than minor injuries.

Amtrak maintains that it has been a “safe and reliable transporter of more than 30 million passengers” and that it has a strong safety record. However, after a 2016 episode in Pennsylvania in which a train hit a piece of track equipment and derailed, killing two, it said in a statement, “We need to assess how we can get better.”

Amtrak has also installed technology known as positive train control on parts of its rail network in the Northeast Corridor after passenger trains traveling well above the speed limit derailed, leaving a trail of death and injuries.

In the Amtrak crash in Virginia on Wednesday, two passengers from the truck were injured — one seriously — and hospitalized. Two members of the train’s crew and at least two passengers, including Representative Jason Lewis, Republican of Minnesota, were also hospitalized with minor injuries.

Republicans had chartered the train to carry them from Washington to the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, where the party was holding its annual policy retreat. Several lawmakers who were on the train estimated that more than half of the Republican members of the House and Senate, including Speaker Paul D. Ryan, were on board, and that many were accompanied by their spouses.

In December, a passenger train on a newly opened Amtrak route jumped the tracks on an overpass south of Tacoma, Wash., slamming rail cars into a busy highway, killing at least three people and injuring about 100 others.

In 2015, an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia, killing eight people and injuring more than 200. A Pennsylvania judge dismissed involuntary manslaughter charges against the Amtrak engineer, saying it appeared to be an accident and not the result of criminal negligence.

After the crash on Sunday, Amtrak posted on Twitter: “Individuals with questions regarding passengers on train 91 can contact us at 1.800.523.9101.”
