Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Two hurt as train derails in Hualien

Carriages of a Tzechiang-class express train yesterday lie on the side of the railway tracks between Fuyuan and Guangfu stations in Hualien County after the train derailed.
    Jun 23, 2016

Two passengers were injured when a Tzechiang-class express train derailed in Hualien County yesterday afternoon, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said.

The derailment occurred at 2:49pm when the train, which had begun its trip at Kaohsiung’s Sinzuoying Station and was carrying 200 passengers, was on its way to Hualien, the TRA said.

The Nos. 7, 8 and 9 carriages derailed when the train was between Fuyuan (富源) and Guangfu (光復) townships, with the latter two carriages overturning on the side of the tracks.

The No. 7 carriage was left severely tilted to one side.

Two female passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the Taipei Veterans’ General Hospital Fonglin Branch in Fonglien (鳳林).

The TRA said the derailment also damaged three transmission towers, 100m of power lines, 300 pre-stressed concrete sleepers and 300m of track.

Full operations on the damaged section of track are due to resume by 12pm today.

The TRA said that the derailment had affected the schedules of 37 trains and an estimated total of 5,300 passengers.

Yesterday’s incident was the second derailment on the Hualien-Taitung line this month.

On June 4, high temperatures were suspected to have caused the tracks to deform, leading to a derailment of a northbound Chukuang-class train.

The temperature of the affected tracks was recorded at 63°C, higher than the 60?C the tracks are designed to withstand.

None of the 50 passengers on that train suffered major injuries, but the incident severely damaged 250m of train track.

Asked about the cause of yesterday’s derailment, the TRA said that the temperatures on the track were measured at 54?C, which did not exceed the temperature limit.

It said footage from surveillance cameras on the train did not indicate any unusual occurance and that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.

The deformation of the tracks could have been caused by derailment or by the train driver applying the emergency brakes, it said.

The design of the tracks could be flawed as well, the TRA added.

    10 injured after rollercoaster derails

A total of 10 people were injured after a rollercoaster crashed off the rails at a theme park in North Lanarkshire in central Scotland on Sunday, local police said. The two adults and eight children were all being treated at local hospitals, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted Police Scotland as saying.

The two adults and eight children were all being treated at local hospitals, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted Police Scotland as saying.

One adult and one child are in stable condition and three children are expected to be allowed home later, said the report.

The accident involved the Tsunami ride at the M&D’s park near Strathclyde Park in Motherwell. Six ambulance crews and a specialist operation team, as well as six fire engines were on the scene after being called on Sunday afternoon.

Police Scotland revised down the number of the injured from its initial estimate of 11 and confirmed there were nine passengers on the ride at the time, while eyewitnesses claimed the carriage smashed into a toddlers’ ride when it hit the ground, as reported by the online Scotsman newspaper.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oicpSuce-kg

"On arrival it became clear a series of five gondolas connected on a train on the Tsunami ride have detached from the rails, struck the superstructure and then struck the ground." Chief Inspector David Bruce was quoted by BBC as saying.

"As a result of this accident, 10 people have been injured, two adults and eight children," he added.

The M&D’s theme park announced on its website that the theme park is closed due to an incident.

"A serious incident occurred at M&D’s today involving the tsunami rollercoaster. We have all emergency services on site to assist. The theme park is closed until further notice," said the spokesperson for the theme park.

There are also messages and videos on social media about the incident of the rollercoaster carriage crash with children and adults on board, saying "it’s like something out a horror film".

Scottish First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said:"My thoughts are with everyone involved in this terrible incident at M&D’s theme park, especially those injured."

Earlier, Police Scotland declined to make any comment on the incident on the phone when contacted by Xinhua.

Freight train derails in Selkirk, wheels torn away

Second derailment on stretch of rail line this week

CBC News Posted: Jun 30, 2016 12:31 PM CT Last Updated: Jun 30, 2016 12:31 PM CT

There is no word yet on what caused the derailment, the second one this week.

A train derailment in Selkirk, Man. on Wednesday evening has left a number of freight cars lying in ditches alongside the track, some with their wheels torn away.

It's the second time this week that a derailment has happened on that stretch of line, the first occurring on Monday, according to Kevin Crooks, who works at Kinetic Machine Works, a business that backs onto the tracks in the northwest corner of the city.

He described the scene from Wednesday as "a train-wreck, literally," saying there are some cars rolled over in the ditch "and a bunch of others all askew, just kind of piled up."

    Train derails

"There's a lot of wheels missing off them," he added.

Cranes were brought out Wednesday to remove some of the cars but an approaching storm forced crews to abandon the effort, Crooks said.

He estimates about 10 cars remain to be cleared at the scene.

There's no official word on what the cars were hauling, though Crooks has heard it was a concrete powder mix. Selkirk Redi Mix Ltd, a supplier of concrete mix has a plant on the other side of the tracks from Kinetic Machine Works.

The rail line is owned by CP Rail and operated by Lake Line Railroad. A CP Rail spokeswoman declined to comment and referred calls to Lake Line Railroad.

No one from Lake Line has yet returned calls from CBC.

Crooks said the ground in the area where the derailments happened is saturated after several days of rain, and he thinks it could have played a part in the crash.

"It's kind of shocking that they had two in a week," he said.

Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson said he wasn't aware of the derailment until CBC News called.

Selkirk is located about 30 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

    • Collision happened late Tuesday morning in southeastern Italian countryside
    • Two trains collided head-on about 15 kilometers south of Adriatic Sea

(CNN)Two passenger trains collided head-on Tuesday morning in a rural area of southeastern Italy, killing at least 27 people, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Pictures from the scene in the Puglia region showed both trains were on the same track about 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the Adriatic Sea, apparently headed toward each other.
Firefighters inspect the wreckage of two trains after a head-on collision Tuesday in the Puglia region.
Images distributed by firefighters there showed the smashed remains of train cars and a large area of scattered, twisted metal at the impact site about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) east of the city of Andria. More than 50 people were injured, ANSA reported. A hospital in Andria appealed to the public for blood donations for the injured.
One train was headed from Andria to Corato, while the other was coming in the opposite direction, ANSA reported.
The death toll was expected to rise, a medical official at the scene told CNN on condition of anonymity. The official said 22 bodies had been pulled from the wreckage, and one person died in a hospital.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi promised a full inquiry to find out who was responsible. He met with officials in the region Tuesday afternoon and pledged support, he told reporters in Bari on Tuesday evening.
"My thoughts go to the families of the victims," he said. "We are together in this pain and despair."
The crash happened about 7 kilometers east of the city of Andria.
The state-run rail company FS Group offered condolences and said both trains were operated by the private company Ferrotramviaria SpA, which runs commuter rail services in the area.
"The employees of the Italian FS Group are close to the victims' families, the wounded and colleagues at Ferrotramviaria," the FS Group said.
Details on what led to the crash weren't immediately available.
Crumpled wagon cars are seen after the two commuter trains collided.
The wreck happened in a relatively remote area. Local authorities took to social media to ask for any doctors and medics in the area to go to the crash site to help the injured.
"It's not an area that's easily accessible. The closest highway is miles away," CNN contributor Barbie Nadeau said.

D.C. Metro train derails; 1 passenger hurt

    Friday, July 29, 2016

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Metro says a train has derailed in northern Virginia, and fire officials say one of about 75 passengers on the train was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Metro spokesman Richard Jordan says two cars derailed at the East Falls Church Metro station platform Friday morning, but the train is upright. There’s no service between McLean and Ballston, which is causing orange and silver line delays that will likely continue through the morning.

Arlington County Fire Department spokesman Deputy Fire Marshal Peter Corbino says one passenger was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Jordan says the derailment happened by a switch where trains begin using one track in an area where Metro’s performing work as part of a major maintenance effort.

He says the cause is under investigation.

FALMOUTH, Ky. —Cleanup will continue for several days following a train derailment in Pendleton County.

it happened around 10:30 a.m. near Woodson Street in Falmouth.

Authorities said 24 cars of a 125-car CSX train en route to Atlanta derailed, including four hazardous-materials cars containing sulfuric acid.

There were no hazardous materials released, CSX said.

Aerial video showed firefighters and workers examining several rail cars, some of which were overturned, while others were off the tracks.

“It looks like a kid playing with train cars and throwing them every which way,” resident Dustin Weaver said. “There’s so much destruction down there, it’s unbelievable.”

More rail cars were still on the tracks north of the crash scene.

Several of the derailed cars were missing wheels, which were in a pile south of the main crash area. The track was also torn up in that area.

"I don’t think there’s one car that’s been derailed that’s intact," Weaver said.
The crash shook the neighborhood, causing power outages across the area.

"I thought it was an earthquake or something and it just stopped,” Sonny Hibbar Jr. said. “(I) came outside and we see this over here behind my left shoulder."

Some lost power for a millisecond. Others were without electricity for several hours. All power has since been restored.

A shelter-in-place order was in effect for several hours after the crash. Residents were asked to also turn off A/C units, as officials feared sulfuric acid may have spilled. That was not the case.

Train derails in SWAR, causes traffic delays

    Sunday, August 14th 2016, 5:59 pm EDT

Authorities in Southwest Arkansas are working to clean up more than two dozen rail cars after a train derailment.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 82 between Lewisville, Arkansas and Texarkana.

County officials say the cars were loaded with frac sand, which is not hazardous. The frac sand is a natural material made from sandstone.

The train was traveling west when 32 cars derailed.

Union Pacific investigators are still trying to determine what cause the wreck. Several hundred feet of rails were damaged as a result, along with a railroad bridge.

    Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The tracks run adjacent to Hwy. 82 which could cause some traffic delays.

"It is right down the main heart highway through our country as and we have a major traffic problem developing. It's going to be a long, drawn-out deal we are going to have to go down to one lane," explained Lafayette County Sheriff Obie Sims.

Diesel leak following two trains going in opposite directions side swiped each other.

    AUGUST 21, 2016, http://www.torontosun.com/2016/08/21/cp-rail-train-derails-in-toronto

TORONTO - Two freight trains sideswiped each other in the heart of Toronto early Sunday morning,

    resulting in a diesel leak.

Around 5:30 a.m., Toronto Fire Services responded to reports of loud, unusual noises coming from

the railway line near Dupont St. and Spadina Rd.

“It was discovered that two trains going in opposite directions side swiped each other,” district chief David Taylor said.

“The westbound train had a split in the diesel tank, which is now currently leaking, but contained.”

Taylor added the last three cars on the eastbound train derailed, and crews are on scene cleaning up the spill.

Toronto Police said there is no threat to public safety.

Angela Singer-Butler, who lives nearby, said she was woken up by the “earth-shattering” accident.

“We all heard this huge bang and we were so startled,” she said. “We often hear the trains, but it doesn’t

    really wake us up.”

John McGrath, a board member of the Annex Residents’ Association, came to the scene after seeing reports on Twitter.

He said the association, along with other groups, have been trying to get the rail line moved for years.

“It’s been three years since Lac-Megantic and we haven’t learned a thing,” he said. “We are still shipping dangerous cargo through residential neighbourhoods.”

Officials haven’t said what the trains were carrying.

CP Rail is investigating the cause of the accident.

No one was injured Sunday when a Union Pacific train carrying coal derailed near Roanoke, sending five rail cars tumbling into a creek, police said.

About 20 cars derailed and five fell into Denton Creek around 6 p.m., Roanoke police Detective Sandy Pettigrew said.

It appears the bridge failed, but Union Pacific has not confirmed a cause, she said.

The train was not carrying any hazardous materials, Pettigrew said.

12 Coaches of Express Train Derails in Kerala, None Injured

Passengers of a Mangaluru-bound express train escaped unhurt today when 12 of its bogies derailed amid heavy rains at Karukutty, about 45 km from Kochi, disrupting rail traffic in Kerala.

A possible major collision was also averted as the Chennai-Trivandrum train coming towards Ernakulam was stopped around 300 metres away from the accident site following a timely alert, a railway official said.

Railways ordered a probe into the mishap which occurred at 2.55 AM shortly after the Train 16347 Thiruvananthapuram- Mangaluru Express left Aluva station and was running at a slow speed.

There was no casualty and all passengers were safe and taken to Thrissur for their onward journey, Railways said.

Southern Railways Additional General Manager P K Mishra, who visited the accident site along with senior colleagues, told reporters there was no casualty.

One woman passenger complained of shoulder pain and was taken to a nearby hospital and after first aid she left for home, he said.

According to railway officials in Thiruvananthapuram, the derailed coaches have not detached or toppled, which is one of the reasons for passengers escaping unhurt. Continues........

THE main north-west rail line was closed on Sunday after the derailment of a grain train near Muswellbrook.

Shortly before 11am several of the train’s wagons, which were empty at the time, came off the track at Koolbury – a rail location between Muswellbrook and Aberdeen.

Trains stopped in the area and passenger services were transferred to buses.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) had no estimation when the rail line would reopen, as investigators inspected the damage to the track.

There were no reports of injuries.

ARTC staff were attending to level crossings in the area which had been triggered as a result of the derailment.

“We would like to apologise to our customers for the impact on operations and the community for any inconvenience experienced as a result,” an ARTC spokesman said.

A maintenance vehicle derailment and several malfunctions on the D.C. Metro caused widespread delays along three lines during the Tuesday morning rush-hour commute.

A high rail excavator used for system repairs derailed outside the Dunn Loring station Tuesday morning at roughly 5:35 a.m., crippling service for orange line riders coming from Virginia. Officials single-tracked trains while they worked to fix the problem. Maintenance personnel re-railed the construction vehicle at roughly 7 a.m., but delays persisted and normal service did not resume until 8:45 a.m, reports NBC Washington.

It is unclear what is responsible for the vehicle derailment. A Metro train derailed in Virginia July 29 due to deteriorating tracks and poor safety oversight.

Calgary Transit driver injured in CTrain derailment at Tuscany LRT station

The driver of a Calgary Transit driver is recovering in hospital and crews are working to clean up after a CTrain went off the tracks Tuesday. Global’s Mia Sosiak reports.

The driver of a Calgary Transit CTrain was taken to hospital in serious condition after the train derailed at the Tuscany LRT station in the city’s northwest. The light-rail train crashed through the end of the track at more than 60 kilometres an hour.

A power pole and heavy weights that anchored the car pierced the windshield—just missing the operator—and leaving the front car totalled.

Dan Duplessis was one of those passengers. He said he first thought the train was just moving further up the platform, but then it “accelerated as if going to the next station” despite having arrived at the end of the line.

“The train rapidly came to a halt with a crashing sound, throwing me across the row of seats,” Duplessis told Global News. “Several of the round interlocking pieces were ripped up from the impact.”

Duplessis said he pushed the emergency help button and was advised by transit security to stay on the train until first responders arrived, which he said took about 10 minutes.

“Medics banged on the door and checked to see if we were in any immediate danger and told us to wait,” Duplessis said. “Firefighters manually opened the door from the outside, which was undamaged, and helped us out of the train.”

Calgary Transit spokesperson Ron Collins said the three-car train left the tracks northwest of the station just before 7 a.m. Tuesday. Its $4.5-million replacement cost will be covered by insurance, officials said.

“The train had continued on beyond Tuscany station – which is the end terminal station – for whatever reason, and then went through the fence just off of the tail-track beyond Tuscany station – and then derailed,” Collins said. The so-called “tail track” at Tuscany station is the longest in the city.

“It’s just a question now of trying to determine what happened here.”

The driver, a woman in her 60s, was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in serious but stable condition. Transit officials hadn’t spoken to her as of 2 p.m., as she was medicated due to her injuries.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux said paramedics arrived at the scene prepared to treat multiple patients. Only three passengers were on board and none were injured.

“I just wonder what happened,” transit rider Franco Frroku said. “Was it a malfunction of the actual train or was the driver at fault for it?”

Emergency crews respond to the Tuscany LRT station on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 for a LRT derailment.

    Global News / Paul MacEachern

Calgary Transit is investigating the derailment, scouring CCTV footage from cameras at the station and looking for information related to the brakes in the train’s black box recorder.

“We have to look at a lot of things. We have to look at the condition of the vehicle, the condition of the track, signals, as well as the operator,” Calgary Transit’s acting director Russell Davies said. “We expect to have some findings fairly soon, but there’s nothing pointing a specific way just yet.”

There were delays to CTrain service while crews worked to repair the line. A large crane was on its way to help with the cleanup mid-afternoon.

“Shuttle buses will be used during the afternoon commute between Crowfoot and Tuscany stations.”

The Tuscany CTrain Station is located on Crowchild Trail N.W. near Stoney Trail N.W.

“While traffic is flowing in both directions on Crowchild Trail, there are major delays in the area,” the City of Calgary said in a statement. “Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate options.”

Calgary’s light-rail transit has been running since 1981 and has expanded over the years to connect the northwest, northeast and south sectors of the city to the downtown core. Unlike subway systems in other major cities, nearly all of the 53 kilometres of track are above ground.

Davies said there have been accidents over the years involving pedestrians and vehicles, but this one is out of the ordinary.

“I’ve never seen one of this kind of severity of our own equipment and involving our own staff.”

A BNSF freight train derailed Thursday morning on a washed-out bridge near Ferryville, leaking alcohol and diesel fuel as a second night of heavy rains triggered flooding and mudslides.

Two locomotives and five rail cars left the tracks, according to the railroad.

One of the locomotives spilled about 2,500 gallons of fuel, with some making its way into the Mississippi River, said BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth.

McBeth said two of the derailed cars were empty tankers; one last carried ethanol and the other vegetable oil. The others were carrying wall board.

The crew was not injured but were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Officials from the DNR and the federal Environmental Protection Agency are responding, but access to the site is difficult because of damage from two days of heavy rains.

McBeth said high water levels in the Mississippi are preventing crews from deploying booms to contain the spill.

Mike Dagnon lives about a mile from the derailment on Rush Creek Road near Ferryville, which he said was covered with two feet of water, mud and a jumble of downed tress.

“I saw a fish swimming down the road,” Dagnon said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Freight train derails in Paulsboro, NJ  October 11, 2016
Four tanker cars of a freight train derailed Tuesday morning in Paulsboro.

No one was injured and nothing was spilled, officials said.

Three of the cars were carrying lube oil, and the fourth was empty, Conrail spokeswoman Jocelyn Hill said. The wheels on the cars came off the rails but the cars themselves remained upright, she said.

The derailment occurred around 11 a.m. on the Conrail freight line between West Jefferson and and Monroe Streets in the Gloucester County waterfront town.

The cause is under investigation. Initial reports indicate a bent rail was to blame.

"In the whole scheme of things here with train derailments, it was very minor," said Susan Jacobucci, Paulsboro's business adminstrator.

Paulsboro was the scene of a major derailment on Nov. 30, 2012.

That accident involved 82-car freight train crossing a swing bridge across the Mantua Creek.

As the train crossed the bridge, seven cars derailed, four of which fell into the creek. One car breached, unleashing 20,000 gallons of vinyl chloride, a carcinogen, into the atmosphere. The leak would eventually cause the evacuation of hundreds from their homes and businesses.

An National Transportation Safety Board investigation blamed human error and problems with the bridge for the derailment.

Residents, businesses, and first responders have filed civil suits against Conrail for the derailment.

No injuries were reported after 12 rail cars jumped the CN Rail Westlock Sub-Line just south of the Hamlet of Pickardville at approximately 9:30 a.m. Oct. 7.

According to CN Rail spokesperson Kate Fenske there were no dangerous goods spilled in the incident, only salt, grain and lumber.

Main access to the hamlet, which is Range Road 585, was closed until the early afternoon as crews worked quickly to open the line.

A large contingent of backhoes, bulldozers and assorted heavy equipment were dispatched to the site and were able to have the line open for train traffic by Saturday, Oct. 8.

“The guys have been working around the clock trying to get it cleaned up,” said Fenske Saturday, adding that the investigation win the derailment is underway.

She noted that as each investigation is unique, there’s no timeline as to when it will be completed.

The derailment follows an one near Camrose on Oct. 5, where eight cars left the track. No injuries or dangerous goods were reported in that derailment either.

According to the Transportation Safety Board’s website, as of Aug. 31 there have been 66 reported train derailments in Alberta this year, not including the two incidents last week.

This is the second derailment to occur within the borders of Westlock County this year — a train derailed near Westlock on Feb. 14 with no reported injuries or dangerous goods spilled.

There are approximately 310 industrial railways in the province, according to the Alberta Transportation website.

Under the federal Rail Safety Act, trains moving through areas with populations of 10,000 people or more have a maximum speed limit of 40 m.p.h. or 64 km/h. The speed limit for trains outside of populated areas is 50 m.p.h. or 80 km/h.

Train Derails and Leaks Dangerous Chemicals in Superior

A Train Derailed and Spilled Chemicals in Superior

    POSTED: 05:48 PM CDT Oct 25, 2016

    SUPERIOR, Wisc

No injuries were reported as the result of the spill, and no residents had to be evacuated but the four car derailment did close a portion of state Highway 35 for several hours while a number of area fire departments responded.

Crews arrived at the derailment site just before midnight last night.

It is still unclear exactly what caused the train cars to go off the tracks but a coupler on one of the cars punctured a derailed tanker, causing a chemical leak.

That tanker started leaking octene, which is a very flammable liquid.

The leak was happening at a rate of around 6 gallons per minute until emergency crews were able to contain it.

Darryl Fiegle, the Superior Fire Chief, said "They've been doing an excellent job working hard getting this cleaned up as soon as possible without interfering with everyone's daily routine."

When crews arrived on the scene they first set up a perimeter to establish a safe area. They then called in the local hazmat team. As far as when things will be back to normal, officials do not know.

Fiegle said, "That's up to the railroad crews. It could be anywhere between twelve hours to three days. It depends how well they get chemicals cleaned up."

At this hour, crews continue to work on scene.

We are told people should not worry about any danger from the chemical leak but everyone should stay away while the clean up continues.

We will keep you updated as we learn more.

Train carrying chemicals derails in Calvert City

    Posted: Nov 02, 2016 7:27 PM EDTUpdated: Nov 02, 2016 9:22 PM EDT

    CALVERT CITY, Ky. -

WEDNESDAY, 8:20PM: Four of eight cars are now upright and away from the scene. Work has stopped for now and will continue in the morning, in daylight. As of now, the situation is being monitored. We'll continue to update this story as it develops.

WEDNESDAY, 6:43PM: A train was carrying chemicals when it derailed, causing eight of its cars to slide down an embankment.

It happened Tuesday night along the Paducah and Louisville Railway ...

    The railway's president, Tom G

The railway's president, Tom Garrett, says four of the cars were empty and the other four were loaded with product. He wont say what type of chemicals were in the cars because of a confidentiality contract with the shipper.

Families in the area weren't notified about the accident until the next day. Garrett says it's because no one was at risk.

"There still is not a real danger to the public and because there was no leak of the cars, there was no release," says Garrett.

Garrett says crews have been working non-stop since the accident, making sure the situation stays under control.

"They are monitoring the air to make sure that there's no contaminates releasing in to the air," says Garrett.

By Wednesday night, they already had several cars pulled out of the embankment.

As of now, no leaks have been reported.

Garrett says chemical cars are built to withstand a derailment and the railroad crew is trained in how to handle them.

"Unfortunately, like any mode of transportation, there are accidents that occur," says Garrett.

If everything goes as planned, the derailment could be cleaned up by Friday morning.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

    Wednesday 9 Nov 2016 7:16 am

Five people are trapped and 40 people have been injured after a tram overturned in south London.

Police described it as a ‘serious incident’ at Sandilands tram stop in Croydon, warning people to stay away from the area where the tram came into problems in a tunnel around 6.10am.

Witness Hannah Collier said: ‘Heard a massive crash outside my window, now emergency services everywhere for the overturned tram. Hope everyone is okay.’

It came as heavy rain drenched the capital throughout the night.

So far it is not yet clear what made the two carriages overturn.

Train Derailment Prompts Evacuation Of Ellendale

    http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/11/11/train-derailment-ellendale/

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — School bus drivers are helping with the evacuation of the southern Minnesota town of

Ellendale following a train derailment Friday morning on the community’s south side.

According to the Union Pacific Railroad, four UPRR rail cars derailed at around 5:45 a.m. At least one rail car was carrying

liquid petroleum gas, which is flammable.

The evacuation order came at the time school buses were headed out to pick up students in the New Richland-Hartland-

Ellendale-Geneva district. School superintendent Dale Carlson says the request for evacuation came around 6:45 a.m.

“Myself, our transportation coordinator, our elementary principal, our lead driver, we’ve all been here working this morning

since a little before 7,” said Carlson. “When that request was put out there is no question we would help out with that.”

All classes are cancelled in the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva school district, which has two buildings. The

district’s elementary school building is in Ellendale, and Carlson says it’s not far from where the derailment happened.

According to the Steele County Sheriff’s Office, there are no known injuries in the train derailment and multiple agencies are

going door-to-door for a precautionary evacuation.

UPRR says the train was heading from South St. Paul to North Platte, Nebraska. The UPRR’s Hazardous Materials

Management Team is now on site coordinating with first responders from the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department. The

Minnesota Chemicals Assessment team is also responding and will assist.

“Union Pacific’s priority is identifying the cause of the leak and maintaining it to preserve public safety. More details will be

available in the coming hours. The incident’s cause is under investigation,” UPRR said.

A command center working the derailment is set up at Ellendale United Methodist Church on the west side of town.

Evacuees are welcome at the church, authorities said.

    Ellendale has about 700 residents.
