The lines between Lincoln Central and Market Rasen and Grimsby are currently closed after a derailed freight train near Lincoln.
The incident happened at around 2.40pm near Station Road (A159) level crossing at Langworth.

Around eight wagons have derailed from a DB Schenker train which totalled 22 wagons. Both lines of the railway are blocked.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue attended the derailment and confirmed that there are no spillages of chemicals and no injuries.

Four carriages of the train derailed after part of the bridge collapsed

At least 12 soldiers have been killed in Pakistan after a train carrying hundreds of army personnel derailed from a bridge and plunged into a canal.

The army said four carriages derailed after part of the bridge collapsed near Wazirabad in Punjab province.

It was not clear what caused the bridge to collapse, but reports said it dated back to the British colonial era.

Khawaja Saad Rafique, Pakistan's railways minister, suggested sabotage may have been involved in the accident.

"It seems like some other hand must be involved because derailment does not happen like this," he told local media.

The dead reportedly included a senior officer.

Mr Rafique called the incident "unprecedented".

"It could either be a case of a blast or someone has tried to loosen the fish-plate on the track," he told Karachi's Geo TV.

A preliminary report would be issued on Thursday night, followed by a more detailed report within 72 hours, he said.

Thousands evacuated after freight train derails, catches fire, in Tennessee

A freight train carrying flammable and toxic gas derailed and a rail car caught fire in Tennessee, forcing the evacuation of more than 5,000 people and the hospitalization of nine for breathing in fumes, officials said.

The evacuation of homes and businesses took place after the derailment around midnight Wednesday of the CSX Corp (CSX.N) train in Blount County, eastern Tennessee, they said.

Nine people were admitted to Blount Memorial Hospital with respiratory issues, while another 21 were held for observation in the emergency room, hospital spokesman Josh West said.

Matt Farr, his brother and their parents woke up to the news in Maryville city and grabbed a change of clothes at about 8:30 a.m. ET before heading to a nearby animal center to drop off their Yorkie dog, Rosie.

Farr, 21, said the four residents planned to stay at a nearby hotel until the evacuation is lifted.

"We didn't think we'd be there that long, but now it's starting to look like we may be there for a couple days," he said from the animal center. "We've had trains derail before, but not with chemicals, so it's pretty bad."

Firefighters were allowing the blaze to burn itself out on the advice of specialists, as attempts to extinguish it could be hazardous, Blount County firefighter Kermit Easterling said.

The county has urban and rural areas and is also home to part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, he said.

Of the 30 people at the hospital, 10 officers - five each from the Blount County Sheriff's Office and the Alcoa Police Department - were exposed to chemical-laden fumes from the blaze, sheriff's spokeswoman Marian O'Briant said.

HAZARDOUS

CSX said a tank car loaded with acrylonitrile, a hazardous material used in manufacturing plastics and other industrial processes, derailed on the train headed to Waycross, Georgia, from Cincinnati, Ohio. It said no one was injured in the derailment.

The substance is flammable and presents an inhalation risk, CSX said. The 57-car train included 27 carrying hazardous materials, including cars carrying acrylonitrile on either side of the burning rail car, it said.

There was no crude oil among the 57 cars, CSX said.

The incident comes on the heels of other derailments in North America.

In May, a train carrying crude oil derailed and caught fire in Wells County, North Dakota, forcing the evacuation of a nearby town, according to local media.

In March, a freight train with cars carrying methanol derailed in central Texas. In February, 11 railway cars carrying ethanol fuel derailed in Iowa. Officials said there were no injuries in these U.S. incidents.

EVACUATION

Maryville residents could be forced from their homes for up to two days and the Red Cross has set up a shelter in a nearby high school, officials said.

About 100 people were sheltered at Heritage High School in Maryville early Thursday, while many others opted to stay with friends and family, O'Briant said.

CSX said it was offering displaced residents assistance, including lodging.

"People are coming in left and right now," Peter O'Neill, volunteer director at the Blount County Red Cross, said in a telephone interview. "We have food set up. Cots. And we sent games for the kids."

Residents within a two-mile radius were evacuated initially, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. The zone was changed to 1-1/2 miles later on Thursday, O'Briant said.

Maryville officials recommended as a precaution that some residents refrain from drinking well water until groundwater contamination could be ruled out, according to a city government Facebook post.

A stretch of railway track has reopened nine days after empty fuel tankers pulled by a freight train derailed.
The crash, near Langworth, Lincolnshire, on 30 June, closed the line between Lincoln and Grimsby.
Network Rail - which suggested heat may have caused a kink in the track - said the line reopened on Thursday and normal service resumed on Friday.
The Rail Accidents Investigations Bureau (RAIB) said it was continuing to investigate the cause.
Brakes applied
The RAIB said the train was travelling at 48mph (77km/h) when the driver reported a kink in the left-hand rail ahead of the derailment. The train's brakes automatically applied, bringing it to a stop.
The service - travelling from Kingsbury Oil Terminal to Humber Oil Refinery - consisted of 22 empty diesel wagons.
In total 10 derailed, with some leaving the track and rolling over.
There were no injuries but there was "substantial damage" to the track, points and signalling equipment.

Twelve homes were evacuated Friday after a CN train derailed just north of Yorkton.

A dozen rail cars jumped the tracks near Ebenezer, Sask. around 1:50 p.m. Four of the cars were carrying liquid sulfur; seven were carrying cement, and one was empty.

A CN Rail spokesperson told CTV News that some liquid sulfur leaked.

No one was injured, according to RCMP, but a dozen homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Residents were allowed back in their homes late Friday evening.

Some roads were blocked in the area as CN police investigated.

At least five rail cars derailed from the first train after it was hit from behind by a second NS train. The first train had three locomotives and 54 rail cars. Five empty cars at the end of that train derailed.

The second train had two locomotives and 43 empty rail cars used as auto racks for carrying vehicles. Norfolk Southern says the locomotive on that train derailed and there is a diesel fuel spill.

Two crew members on the second train were taken to the hospital.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, according to Norfolk Southern.

Three homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Crude oil train derails in rural northeastern Montana

A mixed-freight train derailed in eastern Montana Tuesday evening, pausing Amtrak’s Empire Builder rail service and stranding travelers, reports the Williston Herald.

The westbound train contained 106 loaded crude oil tank cars and two buffer cars loaded with sand. Twenty-two cars derailed. Of those derailed cars, two remain upright.

Firefighters who responded to the derailment with the Culbertson Fire Department had completed hazardous materials training about a month ago due to the increase in oil shipments and other rail traffic in the area, said volunteer firefighter Travis Northington.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Jason Frederick tells The Billings Gazette that authorities have evacuated some homes within a mile of the derailment. No injuries were reported in that derailment.

He says a BNSF hazardous materials team was flying in from Texas. Oil tankers also derailed near Casselton, N.D., in December 2013, causing a massive fireball and the voluntary evacuation of the town. They had not arrived yet at 11 p.m. “It’s very unfortunate”. The derailed cars are being evaluated for any possible compromises.

Jones says the tracks were expected to re-open on Thursday afternoon.

Tuesday’s derailment disrupted Amtrak service between Whitefish, Mont., and Minneapolis, and the sheriff said he expects more delays are likely.

CULBERTSON, MT. (KFGO-AM) - A westbound BNSF train carrying oil derailed in northeast Montana Thursday evening, about 50 miles west of Williston.

It happened several hours after the tracks reopened from another train derailment that happened Tuesday in the same area.

Roosevelt County Public Information Officer Lee Almer says the train contained 100 cars. 22 derailed, 21 are on their side, and several were leaking.

He says the area is remote but as a precaution, an area in a one-and-a-half mile radius of the derailment was evacuated.

There were no injuries and no fires have been reported

CN says several cars on an intermodal train have derailed near Bowmanville, Ont

A CN freight train derailed near Bowmanville, Ont., at 2:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, causing Via Rail to suspend its trains in both directions between Toronto and Ottawa, as well as Toronto and Montreal, for the rest of the day.

Via Rail said service is expected to resume Sunday morning.

Canadian National Railway spokesman Jim Feeny told CBC News the cars were on a westbound train. He said there do not appear to be any injuries. Seven cars were affected by the derailment and are blocking rail infrastructure. It is not known what the cars were carrying. 

Via said it is organizing alternate transportation for passengers who were already en route aboard trains. For all other people travelling Saturday evening, the trains are cancelled.

Bowmanville is near Oshawa, and about 63 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

JOHANNESBURG - A train derailed between Booysens and Crown Mines stations, leaving approximately 150 passengers injured.
According to ER24's Russel Meiring, "What we know so far is unconfirmed. We believe two trains collided at Booysen train station at Johannesburg, causing one to derail.

"We responded and on our arrival we found more than 100 patients. As far as we know, there are no fatalities. Most of the injures are moderate to minor, including some serious patients."

ER24 paramedics are treating neck and back injuries as well as major and minor fractures. Injured passengers are being taken to nearby hospitals.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said,”We can confirm that the accident happened, it happened over an hour ago.”
“Rescue vehicle and personnel are on the scene. They are helping over a hundred people lying on the platform, with minor to serious injuries,” said Meiring.

Metrorail says it’s too early to say what caused the accident. The company has arranged buses to ferry commuters meant to be using the same route.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Two express trains derailed into a river in central India overnight after flood water weakened the tracks, killing 21 people, state officials said on Wednesday, reigniting criticism about lack of safety on the world's fourth-largest rail network.

Divers using gas cutters pulled out trapped passengers and 300 had been rescued by early morning, officials said. Dozens were rushed to hospital.

Twelve coaches of the Kamayani Express to Varanasi from Mumbai derailed near Harda in the central state of Madhya Pradesh just before midnight. Six coaches of the Janata Express derailed around the same time, the railway ministry said.

"The prima facie cause of the incident is stated to be flash floods due to heavy rains," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu told parliament.

Heavy monsoon rains and the tail-end of a cyclone have killed more than 100 people across India in flooding, landslides and building collapses in recent days.

But a former railway minister said if the tracks had been maintained, the accidents could have been avoided.

"It's totally unacceptable. It's a symptom of a deep-rooted cancer in the railway system," Dinesh Trivedi told reporters.

Train wrecks killed more than 25,000 people on India's overloaded and outdated railway network last year alone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi this year massively increased spending to modernize the network, but improvements will take years.

The head of the railway board, A.K. Mittal, told reporters a flash flood struck the area just minutes before the trains came through, disturbing the tracks. "Ten minutes back at this spot, train movement was normal. There was no problem."

Television images showed train coaches smashed into each other and tilted into the river. Some police and villagers had clambered on top of the coaches lying on their side.

"It shook like a tree in storm. We thought something had hit the train," said Santosh Singh, a passenger.

India's state-run railway network, the fourth largest after the United States, China and Russia, carries some 23 million passengers each day. "The two train accidents in Madhya Pradesh are deeply distressing. Deeply pained over the loss of lives," Modi tweeted.

KATHUA (J&K): Three bogies of a goods train derailed here this morning leading to disruption of traffic on the Jammu-Pathankote railway route.

The train was on its way from Delhi to Jammu and derailed soon after crossing the Kathua railway station, a police officer said.

"Three bogies of the good train derailed, and there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the accident as the train was moving at a slow pace," he said.

Several trains on the Jammu-Pathankote railway line had to be stopped at several places following the derailment of the goods train, he said.

Senior DGM Jammu RN Mina along with technical team reached the spot to restore the railway traffic, he said.

The incident took place early in the morning and the reason seems to be a technical snag.

Train services on Chittagong route resume after six-hour halt

Rail communications on the Chittagong route have resumed six hours after a train derailed at Sitakunda on Tuesday morning.

Two Dhaka-bound trains left Chittagong Railway Station after one side of the tracks was cleared around 11am, Station Master Abul Kalam Azad told bdnews24.com.

Inter-city ‘Bijoy Express’ hit a trailer truck, stranded on the tracks, at Barhbkunda in the morning, killing one person.

The engine and four coaches of the train, which was coming from Mymensingh, derailed, snapping Chittagong’s rail links with the rest of the country.

Four trains were stranded at the Chittagong Railway Station while five more, coming to the port city, were forced to stop at stations at that time.

The situation forced many passengers at the Chittagong station to make alternative arrangements to travel to their destinations.

Railway’s East Zone Divisional Manager Mofizur Rahman said one of the two tracks had been cleared.

“It’ll take about a day to clear the other track,” he told bdnews24.com.

Railway passengers are currently stranded at many railways stations due to a derailment of a train that had occurred between the Maradana and Fort railway stations today.

Speaking to The Nation, officials at the Maradana Railway Station said even though the derailed train has just now been cleared only one out of four railway lines are currently under operation, causing a major disruption and delays in train services during after office hours.

Two couples have spoken of their holiday horror after their train travelling at 100mph crashed whilst they were sleeping.
Sue and David Williams and Karen and Peter Turnbull were ripped from their sleep when their train derailed on its way to Cape Town.

The holidaymakers said “they are lucky to be alive” as they crawled their way out of their cabin into the dust filled night.

Sisters Sue and Karen clung onto each other whilst their husbands on the top bunks scrambled for their lives as their carriage flipped and bounced off the track.

The Prasa train was heading for Cape Town from Johannesburg, in South Africa, but the 27-hour journey was cut short at midnight when it crashed leaving 60 people injured.
Sue and David, from Bare, and Karen and Peter, from Lancaster, all suffered minor injuries including dust inhalation and brusing.

David, 51, suffered a head injury after the force of the crash catapulted him towards the ceiling leaving him needing stitches. He said: “We felt lucky to be alive, it took a few seconds to realise what was going on.

“When it skidded with the dust it was really difficult to breathe. The four of us were in a sleeping cabin, it was like being in a washing machine, bed pieces and our things all over the place.”

Sue, 46, said “It made it worse because it was pitch black, it felt like ages until we got out but it must have only been about 30 minutes.”

Train derails in Randolph County

PARKER CITY - Randolph County officials were responding Wednesday afternoon to a 16-car train derailment that had closed one county road.

Sheriff Ken Hendrickson said Randolph County Road 1000-W, which runs directly east of Monroe Central Jr-Sr. High School, would be closed for several hours.

The sheriff said nine of the 16 cars -- which were empty coal cars -- were off the tracks and on their sides near the crossing. Seven other cars remained upright but were considered derailed, he said.

The derailed cars were at the end of a westbound locomotive, on the east-west tracks that run parallel to Ind. 32.

No injuries were reported. Traffic on county roads 900-W and 1100-W has been not impacted by the derailment, which was reported just after 3:30 p.m., the sheriff said.

Hendrickson said cranes would likely have to be brought to the scene to lift the overturned cars back onto the tracks.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, but foul play was not suspected, the sheriff said.

At least 38 passengers of a Mangalore-bound express train were injured today after its five coaches derailed near Cuddalore district, about 200 kilometres from Chennai.

Police and railway officials said that the mishap occurred around 2 AM after five coaches of Chennai Egmore-Mangalore Express derailed at Puvanur in Vriddhachalam.

The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, official said, adding that the train services on the busy route were disrupted for sometime.

However, trains were later operated on alternative route but they were running late, official added.

Warwick train fire 150 passengers evacuated

• A train carrying 150 people was evacuated when a fire started underneath a carriage at Warwick Parkway railway station.

  The 07:46 Leamington to Worcester Shrub Hill via Birmingham service caught fire just before 08:00 BST.

  The fire had started in the running gear of one of the rear carriages, said Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

  Engineers for train provider London Midland are investigating and replacement bus services are in place.

• The 08:00 Leamington to Birmingham service was held up as fire crews from Leamington and Coleshill put out the flames.

  Francis Thomas, for London Midland, said the train was in the station when the fire alarm went off.

  "I'm glad to say all the automatic fire systems kicked in immediately."

Two British nationals were killed and 10 others injured when three carriages of a train that was carrying a group of tourists from Britain derailed this afternoon about 90km away from here.
According to officials, the mishap occurred at around 1pm on the Shimla-Kalka narrow gauge route near Parwanoo between the Kalka and Taksal stations.
The Great Railway Journey chartered train had 37 passengers aboard, all from Britain.
While two victims, women aged about 35 and 65 years, died on the spot, reports in Chandigarh said that one of the injured passengers had died at a hospital there.
“We have information about two persons who died on the spot. The third death can only be confirmed by authorities in Chandigarh,” said Madan Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner, Solan.
Railway authorities from Ambala and officers of Solan district administration rushed to the spot and all the injured have been taken to hospital and provided medical aid, he said.
The cause of the accident could not be immediately ascertained but experts suspect that it might have occurred due to over-speeding.
A senior Northern Railway official said that two of the passengers were seriously injured in the derailment.
An inquiry is being ordered into the derailment incident and senior officials, including Railway Board Member (Engineering) VK Gupta and Northern Railway General Manager AK Puthia, have rushed to the spot, said the official.
The train had a total of four coaches of which three got derailed on the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge section.
Three of the injured were in a critical condition, with two of them having sustained head injuries while another one had suffered a fracture, Head of Emergency Services of Max hospital, Dr Sumit Arya said in Mohali.
The patients were in a state of shock and unable to come to terms how a day of joy and outing had turned into mourning and despair.
"However, one of the woman passengers said all were travelling in a happy mood and talking about their holiday.
The woman told us that she felt a sudden jerk and almost fell out of window when she was caught by her friend. The coaches derailed after the sudden jerk, she told us,” Arya said.
“The accident occurred when the train was about 3.5 km away from Kalka. The accident site falls in Himachal Pradesh," Divisional Railway Manager of Northern Railways, Ambala, Dinesh Kumar told PTI.
Kumar also said the cause of the accident was not "immediately clear" and an inquiry had been ordered into the incident.

KALABURAGI:Two women passengers were killed and seven others injured when the Mumbai-bound Duranto Express from Secunderabad derailed at Martoor station, 15 km from here, early morning Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Jyoti Paramanddi (44) and K Pushpalata (28), of Hyderabad.

Of the seven passengers injured, six were admitted to the Kalaburagi Government Hospital with fractures. They were shifted to Hyderabad by the railway authorities in the afternoon. Another woman has been admitted to a private hospital here.

Surendra Reddy, a passenger in the ill-fated train, told Express that the train left Secundarabad at 11.10 pm on Friday. He said most of the passengers were asleep when the train derailed at 2.15 am. “There was a sudden jerk ... we all fell down and the chaos began,” Reddy added.

Express noticed that the track was broken at three spots within a 200 m range.  Coach number eight and the pantry car were completely off the track, while coach number seven was partially derailed.

Rescue teams from the Railways, ambulances and fire and police personnel reached the spot from Kalaburagi by 3 am. However, by then the passengers and Martoor locals had begun the rescue operations.

HICKSVILLE (WABC) -- Normal Long Island Rail Road service has resumed westbound. Service was suspended due to a freight train derailment west of Hicksville.

Even though service has resumed, LIRR customers were advised that some residual delays were possible.

Two cars out of a 16-car freight train derailed west of Hicksville on Tuesday, officials tell Eyewitness News.

The freight train is operated by New York and Atlantic.

No injuries were reported.

It is unclear what caused the cars carrying construction materials to derail. One track was taken out of service.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad says 10 ethanol tanker cars derailed and two caught fire Saturday morning in southeast South Dakota.

BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth says the 98-car train carrying ethanol derailed at about 6:15 a.m. between the towns of Scotland and Lesterville. She says in a statement that there were no injuries and no nearby structures were threatened by the fire.

Bon Homme County Emergency Management spokesman Lee Rettig says one rural road was shut down as firefighters from several departments worked to extinguish the blaze at a bridge southeast of Scotland. BNSF hazardous materials teams were also responding to help with the cleanup.

Rettig says the derailed cars were near the front of the train.

Jamshedpur, Sept. 18: Around 900 passengers of Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express had a lucky escape this afternoon, as two front wheels of its engine derailed before reaching Tatanagar station, but the train managed to stand on tracks.

Though it jerked to a stop around 3.50pm just before reaching platform 2, the impact was mild enough not to hurt passengers on board.

South Eastern Railway (SER), under which Tatanagar falls, has initiated a high-level probe into why the engine of the New Delhi-bound Rajdhani derailed. But, prima facie, authorities feel it was a mechanical glitch and not sabotage.

Railway staff worked swiftly, pulling all 18 coaches of the train, including first, second and third AC ones, pantry, luggage van among others, to platform 3, and attaching a different engine.

The train chugged out of Tatanagar at 5.20pm, delayed by roughly an hour-and-a-half. Normally, Rajdhani reaches Tatanagar at 3.50pm and pulls out at 3.55pm.

The timing was also such that no other train was delayed as a domino effect.

"A major mishap was averted as the train was moving slowly at 10-12kmph while approaching Tatanagar," said Ashok Agarwal, spokesman and senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur railway division, which falls under the SER zone.

"A probe has been initiated in this regard," Agarwal said.

"There seems to be some mechanical snag that led to the derailment, not foul play," Tatanagar station manager O.P. Sharma, who along with officials of railway engineering department and loco shed, personally supervised the bogies as they were being shifted, said.

When The Telegraph met the passengers, the general mood was relief mingled with anger.

Rahul Singh (35), a third AC passenger, said he was standing near the door of his coach because he wanted to alight at Tatanagar, when he heard a "thud". "The next thing I knew, a jerk had dashed me against the door of the coach. I'm lucky I escaped a head injury. Thank god," he said.

Passenger Malini Sharma (46), who was waiting on platform 2 to board the train, said she heard the loud sound and saw the train stopping just before entering the station. "It seemed like the driver of the loco might have applied brakes after the train derailed," she said. "But, a major mishap was averted."

Sujit Mahapatra, in his twenties, who like Sharma was supposed to board Rajdhani from Tatanagar, was furious about the delay. "Unthinkable that a prestigious train like Rajdhani can be derailed. All this is the result of the sheer callousness on the part of railways," he said.

Earlier this March, Rajdhani had another narrow escape near Tatanagar railway station due to a mechanical snag in the engine.

Two Injured After Train Derails In Oklahoma City

Two people were treated for non-life threatening injuries after a train derailed in northwest Oklahoma City, Sunday night.

Oklahoma City Police said it was around 8:40 p.m. Sunday when they received the call to rush to the train tracks at N.W. 10th near the Kilpatrick Turnpike.

According to Union Pacific, which operates the train, eight rail cars and two locomotives were involved and thrown off the track.

The train was not carrying hazardous material at the time of the crash, only scrap paper and scrap metal. But the Oklahoma City Fire Department monitored the air quality and said it is does not pose a threat nearby.

The conductor and another worker on the train at the time of the crash were treated for non-life threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.

It was approximately 6 a.m. Monday when the train was removed from the area, but the cars which derailed will not be removed until later Monday afternoon, according to a Union Pacific spokesperson.

Meanwhile the investigation as to what caused this derailment is still going on and it will be some time before that can figure that out. UP will conduct its own investigation and will submit a report to the Federal Railroad Association.

The train snapped a power pole in half along Blackrock Rd after derailing, with live wires lashing the train for over an hour.

The locomotive was two-thirds full, carrying around 800 tonnes, with Wilmar Cane Supply manager Jim Kirchner saying they were unsure of how the train derailed.

“The cause of the accident is unknown, but Wilmar and the police will be investigating the accident together,” Mr Kirchner said.

“We may need to use a crane to move the locomotive, but we are don’t know just yet ... we have to assess whether the locomotive can be pulled back to the mill to be fixed.”

The driver is believed to be uninjured and emergency services are still on scene.

Another derailment on the Long Island Rail Road's tracks -- the second in just over a week -- complicated Wednesday's evening commute but posed no threat to morning riders, according to the LIRR.

The train was not carrying passengers when it derailed as it was leaving the West Side Yard on its way to Penn Station shortly before 5 p.m., according to LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena, who said he did not know the cause of the derailment.

Arena said the derailed train partially obstructed train access into Penn Station, requiring the LIRR to cancel some trains during the evening rush hour. In all, 13 trains were canceled, the LIRR said.

"This basically lasted about an hour," Arena said. "As a result of the derailment at least for a time, we could not move the requisite number of trains into Penn Station that would allow us to keep on schedule, so they had to cancel a number of trains and have those folks wait for the next scheduled train."

The entrance to Penn Station was "not blocked completely," he said, but the LIRR was unable to get enough trains in to meet demand.

Arena said crews worked into the night to get the train back on its tracks, and he did not expect the problem to extend to Thursday morning's commute.

The derailment of a freight train just west of Hicksville on Sept. 15 snarled the commutes of more than 35,000 commuters for more than a day.

Other rush-hour incidents in recent weeks have also caused major service disruptions, including a Sept. 2 power outage that knocked out the signal system just outside the East River tunnels and a train that struck an abandoned vehicle accidentally driven onto the tracks in Bethpage on Sept. 10.

A freight train derailment about two miles west of Marshall early Wednesday morning created a scene that resembles war’s aftermath.
The accident happened around midnight, according to Norfolk Southern spokesman Susan M. Terpay.
The southbound “train with three locomotives, 7,053 feet long, struck a pile of crossties laying across track at Marshall, derailing nine cars . . . with some cars on their sides,” Ms. Terpay said.
The 44-car train’s two-man crew suffered no injury, she added.

A CSX spokeswoman say a train's locomotive derailed in Lynchburg after it hit debris from a rock slide.

CSX spokeswoman Kaitlyn Barrett tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1LsCAOi ) that the 104-car train was carrying empty crude oil cars, along with two cars containing industrial sand. One of the cars containing industrial sand was damaged.

Barrett says there were no leaks or injuries.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday near the site where a CSX train carrying crude oil derailed in April 2014. That derailment sent 30,000 gallons of crude oil in the James River.

The Amtrak passenger train which derailed in Northfield, Vermont, on Monday morning was sent hurtling by a 'freak' rock slide, the governor has said.

One person was airlifted to hospital and another six went in ambulances to be treated for minor injuries after the southbound train traveling at 57 mph flew off the tracks 10 miles south of Montpelier at 10am.

On Monday afternoon, Gov Peter Shumlin told reporters there was a rock on the track that could not have been avoided even if brakes were applied, adding: 'this really was a freak of nature'.

'It was a pretty brutal derailment caused by ledge on the track, and as one of the passengers said to me, "Someone was looking out for us, because literally we walked out of a very difficult situation."' 

He said the six passengers with minor injuries were taken to Central Vermont Medical Center in nearby Berlin to be treated.

The seventh was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Their injuries are unknown.

A train derailment Friday afternoon about 6 miles southwest of Simms, Texas, injured no one but left behind a large mess to be cleaned up.

There is no immediate word on whether the crossing at County Road 4269 remains blocked and, if so, how long it will be until it is cleared.

Even so, there should be no major traffic problems as the railroad company removes the debris, Bowie County, Texas, authorities say. They could not say how long the cleanup will take. 

At least 13 cars of the Union Pacific train left the tracks, with some overturning.

Simms firefighters extinguished a small fire beneath one of the cars. Otherwise, emergency crews said, the train was carrying sand and posed no threat to public safety.

"Naturally, we always worry about hazardous waste being spilled out here and having to evacuate," said Malvern Stewart, who lives near the railroad tracks nearby in Bassett, Texas. 

Simms Fire Chief Paul Beard said: "There is no reason for anyone to be scared or bothered right now as far as this is concerned because there is no haz-mat situation. And there is no danger to the public."

The westbound train was traveling through Bowie County en route to Big Sandy, Texas, when it derailed about 35 miles west of Texarkana.

Residents of the area say this is not the first derailment there.

"We have been lucky so far," Stewart said. "This is just an unforeseen situation that happens."

Representatives of the Bowie County emergency management office have been called in to assess the damage.

And what caused the rail cars to leave the tracks has yet to be determined.

The only sign of trouble aboard a Norfolk Southern train, hauling roughly 9,000 tons of Canadian crude in western Pennsylvania last year, was a moderate sway in the locomotive as it entered a bend on the Kiskiminetas River.

The first 66 cars had passed safely around the curve when the emergency brakes suddenly engaged, slamming the train to a stop. The conductor trudged back nearly a mile through newly fallen snow to see what happened.

Twenty-one cars had derailed, one slamming through the wall of a nearby factory. Four tank cars were punctured, sending 4,300 gallons of crude pouring out of the tangled wreckage.
The cause of the accident in North Vandergrift was identified as a failure in the rails — not aging or poorly maintained tracks, but a relatively new section laid less than a year earlier.

The February 2014 crash fits into an alarming pattern across North America that helps explain the significant rise of derailments involving oil-hauling trains over the last three years, even as railroads are investing billions of dollars in improving the safety of their networks. A review of 31 crashes that have occurred on oil trains since 2013 puts track failure at the heart of the growing safety problem.

Track problems were blamed on 59% of the crashes, more than double the overall rate for freight train accidents, according to a Times analysis of accident reports. Investigators and rail safety experts are looking at how the weight and movements of oil trains may be causing higher than expected track failures.

The growing number of trains hauling crude oil from Canada and the Northern Plains are among the heaviest on the rails today, many extending more than 100 cars in length and weighing a cumulative 19,000 tons or more.

Train services have been disrupted on the main railway line between Norwich and Cambridge and Peterborough after a freight train was derailed.
Train operator Abellio Greater Anglia says services between Norwich and Cambridge and Peterborough are likely to be disrupted until the end of the today.

The problems follow the derailment of a freight train at Wymondham earlier today.

Services are currently beginning and terminating at Thetford with a bus service on to Norwich. But it's adding an hour to journey times.

A passenger train travelling from Mora to Stockholm tore up asphalt, a level crossing barrier, and an electrical wire cabinet when it went off the rails in central Sala on Monday morning.
Nobody was injured when the train derailed just outside Sala railway station, around 100 kilometres north-west of the Swedish capital, in the morning rush hour at around 9am, a spokesperson for the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) told The Local.

Luckily the asphalt seems to have stopped the train; if it had had time to gain speed things could have been catastrophic," said Jan Eriksson, a reporter at the TT newswire and a witness at the scene.

A freight train derailed near the corner of Terrasse Thomas-Valin and Lespérance Street around 11 a.m. Thursday.

DURAND, MI – A freight train carrying automobiles derailed shortly after midnight Friday, Oct. 30, sending 14 railcars off of the tracks and closing several streets in town.

The 155-car CN train was heading west from Port Huron to Battle Creek when it derailed in Durand, according to CN Spokesman Patrick Waldron.

Oak and New Lothrop streets were  because of the crash, Waldron said, but have since been cleared of wreckage.

Main Street in Durand is still closed because of the crash, he said.

Waldron said they're investigating the cause of the crash and do not know how the train was traveling at the time of the crash.

There were no injuries reported, according to CN.

"Ultimately we'll be working through the morning and into the afternoon before we can get Main Street reopened," Waldron said.

There were no hazardous materials involved in the crash, he said.

CTA train derails in Chicago injuring one

CHICAGO (WGN) — One person was taken to the hospital following a train derailment in Chicago Saturday afternoon, according to our Chicago affiliate WGN.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a CTA car derailment in the city’s North Side near the Granville stop at Broadway.

Passengers were evacuated from the train. Officials told WGN one person was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

Power was shut off and service suspended between Howard and Bryn Mawr on the city’s Red Line following the accident.

The clean-up continues after a Huron Central freight train derailed near the town of Spanish, Ont., about 100 kilometres southwest of Sudbury.

The eastbound CP train derailed about 2 p.m. in Watertown, in the southeastern part of the state. The railroad said at least 10 cars derailed, and some were leaking.

No fires or injuries were reported. CP was sending teams to the site.

"CP takes this incident extremely seriously," the railroad said in a news release. The company did not say how much oil spilled.

Federal investigators and hazardous material specialists are on their way to the scene, the Federal Railroad Administration said in a tweet.

Residents of about 35 homes were asked to evacuate around 4 p.m., said Donna Haugom, director of the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management.

On Saturday, a freight train derailed near Alma in western Wisconsin, spilling thousands of gallons of ethanol. BNSF Railway said crews continued Sunday to transfer ethanol from the derailed cars and get the cars back on the tracks.

The BNSF train derailed at 8:45 a.m. Saturday about 2 miles north of Alma, a town along the Mississippi River. Some of the 25 derailed cars were empty auto racks and tanker cars.

BNSF said railroad crews stopped the leaks from five tanker cars and placed containment booms along the shoreline. One tanker released an estimated 18,000 gallons of ethanol, and the other four released an estimated 5 to 500 gallons each.

No one was hurt. BNSF said it expects the tracks to return to service Monday morning.

3rd train derailment in Wisconsin, 2nd in Watertown

A train derailed in Watertown on Wednesday, making this the third Wisconsin derailment in days, the second in Watertown.

WITI-TV, citing a Canadian Pacific spokesman, reports five train cars derailed at a low rate of speed as they were being moved. The cars stayed upright, and the tanks were not affected.

The incident happened around 400 feet west of the site of Sunday's derailment, during which crude oil was spilled and 35 homes were evacuated. Saturday's derailment in Alma resulted in ethanol in the Mississippi River.

The Canada Pacific spokesman said the public was not at risk during Wednesday's incident. The cars were re-railed in around 2 hours.

KiwiRail staff are working to clear a railway line in North Otago after a freight train derailed early today, leaving behind three wagons.

The train left Christchurch on an overnight freight service bound for Invercargill and lost the carriages in Wainakarua next to State Highway 1 and just south of The Mill House.

A spokeswoman for KiwiRail said the train derailed about 2am. Three wagons left the track, but the locomotive did not, and the driver was "fine", she said.

The wagons "the first three of the last six" on the 17-carriage train were not carrying any dangerous cargo, she said.

One was empty, one was carrying two empty containers, and one was carrying cement.

There was minor damage to the track.

Access to the derailed wagons was slowing the clean-up, but KiwiRail was hoping to open the track "before tonight".

This was the first derailment in nearly seven months, the spokesperson said.

KiwiRail was investigating the incident.

The engine driver and his assistant were among the dead, officials said. Brake failure caused the derailment of the Jaffar Express near Aaab-Gum area, about 75km from Quetta, they said.

The train was travelling to Rawalpindi, the garrison city adjacent to Islamabad. All carriages and the engine went off track, the state radio quoting police as saying. Railway officials said the train was carrying around 300 passengers.

Seventy wounded passengers were moved to a hospital at Mach while those with serious injuries were being moved to hospitals in Quetta.

A quick reaction force of Frontier Corps Balochistan and ambulances reached the site for the rescue operation, the military’s Inter-Services Public Relations said.

Two MI-17 helicopters of the Pakistan Army were also sent from Quetta, the statement said.

Pakistani TV footage showed several badly damaged train cars and rescuers pulling the injured from the wreckage. In a statement, the military said it dispatched a helicopter and ambulances to transport the injured to hospitals..

Rescuers were seen trying to pull the injured from the derailed cars.

“Among the dead so far confirmed, five are passengers, two drivers of the train and two members of the railway police,” Durrani said.

Train accidents are common in Pakistan, which inherited thousands of miles of track and trains from former colonial power, Britain.

The railways have seen decades of decline due to corruption, mismanagement and lack of investment.

In July, at least 17 people were killed when a special military train fell into a canal after a bridge partially collapsed.

A Norfolk Southern Train tipped off the tracks and derailed on Nutley on Saturday, spilling a load of contaminated soil and leaving a mess for local emergency workers.

According to the Nutley Police Department, the derailment took place around 3 p.m. on Saturday as the train was crossing at the intersection of Hillside Avenue and High Street.

When police arrived on the scene, they reportedly saw several cargo containers leaning hazardously off the tracks, with one container completely overturned, according to a NPD spokesman.

“It appears that the soil beneath the tracks gave way causing the train to tip,” Nutley police stated in a release.

No injuries were reported and there is no hazard to the public, police stated.

Multiple emergency response agencies worked the rest of the evening to upright the trains and contain any possible contaminant that may have spilled during the derailment, police said.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a train derailment in Brownwood.

The incident took place just before 8 p.m. Monday night under the Truman Harlow overpass near the Howard Payne University campus.

The fire department reports that six train cars came off the tracks in the accident. Four of those cars were turned over on their sides. They are said to have been carrying silica sand. Another car involved was transporting molasses.

Officials say that no hazardous materials were involved in the wreck and that evacuations are not necessary.

The Brownwood Fire Department released the following statement to update the public about the status of traffic in the region:

The derailed rail cars have been removed at this time. BNSF crews are now in the process of removing the damaged tracks to install new track. BNSF is estimating to be complete with this work at approximately 4:00pm today. After the completion of this work most of the streets will be reopened, except for the access road on the Howard Payne side of Truman Harlow overpass (east side) that is accessed from the 377 N Carnegie St exit. This part of the access road will be closed until sometime Thursday to allow for delivery of additional materials needed to repair the tracks that cross the access road.

A cause has not yet been released.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the accident which occurred near Rawlinna, 350km east of Kalgoorlie, on Friday.
The ATSB said 39 of the 59 wagons derailed, starting a fire in a refrigerated food van and damaging about 600m of track.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) deployed an investigator Thursday to a derailment involving a Canadian National (CN) train near Hinton, Alta.

A TSB spokesperson said 12 loaded grain cars derailed in the incident, though didn’t have information on whether the grain was released. There were no injuries or hazardous materials reported.

The spokesperson said a team of investigators will examine the site, document the incident, interview any witnesses and download information from the train’s black box.

Hinton is about 288 kilometres west of Edmonton.
