Train carrying Lube Oil, Silica derails in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A train derailment in Baton Rouge caused traffic delays for drivers trying to get around the city, but officials said there were no chemical spills associated with it.

The train derailed on South Choctaw Drive at West Dual Street around 9:30 a.m. The cause of the derailment is not known and is being investigated. The Baton Rouge Fire Department said it has been determined none of the cars involved in the derailment are leaking.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Choctaw is shut down between North Sherwood Forest Drive and Monterrey Boulevard and is expected to be closed until late Friday night. Area roadways began reopening around 11:45 a.m. Police added there were no reports of injuries.

Officials reported seven cars derailed from an eastbound Canadian National Railroad train. Patrick Waldron, a spokesman for CN, said four of the derailed cars were carrying silica pellets, two were carrying lubricant oil and the last had diflouromethane residue in it. Diflouromethane is hazardous, but is not causing a problem because the car had been emptied before the derailment.

BRFD reported earlier that businesses in the area were being evacuated as a precaution, but that process was called off after the cars were inspected and there were no spills. Officials said the derailment caused parts of the track to be ripped out of the ground, which is why the tracks are shut down until repairs are finished. 

Waldron said the train consisted of 105 cars and two locomotives. He reported it was heading from the CN lot in Baton Rouge to Jackson, Mississippi. The lot is only about six or seven miles from where the train derailed.

Freight train derails in western Iran

A freight train derailed near Tange Haft station in Iran's western Lorestan province.

The railway is completely blocked due to the incident which took place last night, Hossein Ali Moridi, a railway official said, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported on August 12.

Moridi went on to note that currently the railway employees are trying to reopen the path, forecasting the traffic will be launched by 17:00 local time (GMT +4:30 hours).

The official did not disclose further information about possible casualties.

Several people were injured in a train accident near Tange Haft station in Lorestan province on July 17.

In 2009, at least three people were killed and two others injured when two trains collided on the outskirts of Tehran. The accident happened when a passenger train en route from Mashhad to Tehran hit a maintenance train on the line near the town of Varamin.

Back in 2004, a train loaded with chemicals and fertilizer derailed and exploded along the same route killing at least 300 people.

Dalwallinu locals had the fright of their lives on Monday night as the "deafening sound" of crumpling steel echoed across the Wheatbelt town.

Authorities have confirmed a train derailment occurred about 8.30pm, half a kilometre from the CBH Dalwallinu site.

Shire of Dalwallinu works manager Louka Shopov said he and his wife heard the noise of the crash, followed by emergency sirens.

"Shortly after I received a call from the Shire CEO to attend a train crash and manage traffic," he said.

"I arrived to find a crumpled rail car only 20 metres off the Great Northern Highway."

CBH operations general manager David Capper said no one was injured seriously.

"The locomotive and eight wagons have been damaged during the incident," he said.

"There were no grain losses."

No major delays to grain movements at the site are expected, and Mr Capper said the rail line would be cleared in the next few days.

The alternate entrance to the Dalwallinu site is currently blocked by the stationary wagons.

Traffic management is in place and the main entrance to the site is operational.

CBH group, Watco and Brookfield Rail are investigating the incident.

PORTLAND -- One person was hurt when a MAX train derailed in Northeast Portland on Friday afternoon, TriMet said.

A train was entering the Lloyd Center Station, near 13th Avenue and Holladay Street, around 1:45 p.m. when it went off the track.

One passenger reported a minor injury and was taken to an area hospital, said TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt.

The other riders were able to walk to the Lloyd Center platform.

It's unclear what caused the derailment. TriMet is investigating.

Riders should expect "major delays" during the evening commute, Altstadt said.

Around 5:30 p.m., the train was put back on the rails and just before 7 p.m. service resumed.

The train involved in the incident was taken to the Ruby Junction facility, Altstadt said.

An MBTA Green Line trolley derailed in an outbound tunnel near Kenmore Station Monday morning, sparking severe delays on the B, C and D lines.

In an email, MassDOT spokesperson Kelly Smith said the trolley derailed "just east of Kenmore Station" at approximately 9:45 a.m. "No one was hurt, and there was no damage," Smith said.

Boston Fire responded to the scene, shortly after the derailment occurred.

Smith said an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the derailment.

A train derailment in Hoxie, Arkansas has killed two people and sent two others to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Authorities believe that the four affected individuals were all crew members working aboard two Union Pacific locomotives when they collided near Hwy. 67 in Lawrence County on Monday. Both trains were carrying toxic chemicals. The train derailment and collision resulted in flames erupting from one of the engines, reported Arkansas Times.

According to Arkansas State Police, nearby roads had to be closed after the early morning train derailment, and a large number of homes needed to be evacuated. Displaced residents were sent to the Walnut Ridge Community Center.

The train crash was reported to state police at 3 a.m. One of the train engines was still in flames at sunrise. Fortunately, authorities said the toxic chemical cargo was safe from the flames. Union Pacific spokesman Brandon Morris said that the two freight cars that caught fire after the train derailment were carrying diesel fuel and an alcoholic beverage respectively. The flames were extinguished by 10 a.m. Monday.

KIEV, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- A train carrying crude oil derailed Friday morning in Ukraine's central Cherkassy region, destroying at least 25 private houses, authorities said. The accident happened at around 6:35 a.m. local time (0335 GMT) near Gorodysche town, causing extensive flames and smoke and forcing evacuation of dozens of people, the State Service for Emergencies said in a statement. A total of 46 fire engines with 230 firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze at 10:42 a.m.(0742 GMT), the statement said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

TWENTY-TWO passengers escaped with injuries on Saturday night when a Harare-bound passenger train derailed at Heany Junction 30 kilometres from Bulawayo.
Eight coaches at the back of the train which had 11 coaches derailed and fell on the side. Twenty-two passengers on the train that had 120 people, were injured and rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals where one of them is reported to be in a serious condition.  Some were treated and discharged.

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) director of operations Dennis Nyoni and acting director, technical services Thomas Kurebwaseka were at the scene yesterday leading work on the repair of the damaged line.

The two officials confirmed that the train derailed soon after it had left Heany Junction around 9PM.

The incident occurred between Swaroopganj and Bhimana railway stations, NWR PRO Tarun Jain said.

Only one wheel of the engine got derailed and there was no harm to the remaining train/coaches. The loco-pilot managed to stop the train safely by applying emergency breaks. All the passengers are safe, he said.

Jain said that restoration work has been started by the engineering and other technical staff of the railway.

Around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, the sounds of a train running off its tracks forced some people who live near it out of bed in Emerson, Man., including Richard Penner.

"It was just an enormous bang followed by rumbling and my whole house shook," said Penner.

No one was injured but shortly after the loud bang, Penner's home and about 20 others on the east side of Emerson had to be evacuated, forcing 40 people to leave. RCMP said two cars of the train left the tracks around 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 26 near 5th Street East and Taylor Avenue in Emerson, Man.

Derek Robert only had time to grab his phone and a cat after his brother woke him up.  "He's like, ‘We have to get out now because there's something happening,' so then I just ran out," he said.

Emerson Fire Chief Jeff French estimates the train was travelling about eight kilometres an hour when three railcars went off the tracks.

"One was on was listing close to on its side. The other one was kind of listing as well and a third one was off the track," said French.

Thankfully, French said as far as train derailments go, this one is as safe as one could be because investigators did not finding any leaks.

Casualties from the accident in Ledu District, Haidong City are not yet known.

WHITECOURT -- Nobody was injured after a CN train derailed east of Whitecourt, Alta.

According to CN spokesperson Emily Hamer, the eastbound freight train ran into trouble just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 near Cherhill, Alta., about 100 km northwest of Edmonton.

Eight cars filled with gravel left the tracks and four tipped over, emptying their loads on the ground around the tracks.

None of the cars involved in the derailment contained dangerous goods.

This is the second derailment this month on CN tracks in Alberta.

On Sept. 3, 15 cars filled with grain left the tracks near Hondo, northwest of Edmonton.

CP Rail crews are busy doing clean up after a train derailed in the Big Eddy late Wednesday night.

The derailment took place just west of Highway 23 South as the train was heading west from Revelstoke at about 11:15 p.m on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Several train cars could be seen lying on the banks of the track as crews cleaned up the mess on Thursday morning.

Salem Woodrow, a spokesperson for CP Rail, said in an e-mail that four cars derailed.

"There were no injuries, no public safety issues and no environmental concerns," she wrote. "We expect to resume train operations later this afternoon."

The derailed cars were intermodal shipping containers. Woodrow said she did not know their contents but there were no hazardous materials in the cars and nothing was spilled.

Chris Krepski, a spokesperson with the Transportation Safety Board, said it was the second through fifth car on the train that derailed.

"The TSB didn't deploy an investigator to the site but we are following up with the company to gather some further information," he said.

Rob Girard, Revelstoke's fire chief and emergency program coordinator, first learned of the derailment when he was contacted by the Times Review Thursday morning. He said CP Rail had not reported the incident to him, a fact that has him concerned.

"We want to go out and look. We should know about it," he said. "That's pretty major in our community. We want to know, especially in light of what's been going on in terms of train derailments."

Girard attended the scene and said five containers derailed and that they were either empty or carrying hay. The discrepancy between Girard and CP Rail's numbers is because one car was carrying two containers.

He said he was preparing a report to council to let them know about the situation. The city also wasn't notified about a 2010 derailment near McDonald's and a 2011 derailment in Albert Canyon alongside the Illecillewaet River upstream of Revelstoke.

"The city doesn't take this kind of stuff lightly," he said.

Woodrow said the lack of notification was because there were no injuries, public safety issues, or environmental issues as a result of the derailment.

"We have our own emergency protocols which were immediately enacted and all safety precautions and measures were taken as we responded to the situation," she said.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

A  train derailment sent better than 2 dozen rail cars off the tracks in New Haven early this morning. The New Haven Police and Fire Crews received the call for help at just before six this morning. When crews arrived on the scene on Dawkins Road between Webster and Ryan they found 34 rail cars had left the tracks and were in a tangled heap of twisted metal and debris. The tanker cars that were involved were empty however some of the cars were carrying construction equipment. There were no injuries and no evacuations were necessary. The cause of the derailment is being looked into.

Train derails near Fort Wayne

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) – A train derailed early Monday morning in the New Haven area, which is just east of Fort Wayne in Allen County.

The New Haven Fire Department responded to Dawkins Road and Webster Road just before 6 a.m., after several people reported the derailment. 31 of the Norfolk Southern train’s 84 cars were off the track. Five of the cars remained upright while the rest were on their sides. Officials say all the cars were empty, so nothing spilled.

Norfolk Southern sent two contractors to the scene to help clean up. There’s no estimated time on what that will be complete.

There were no injures and the cause is under investigation.

Weather causes train derailment near Picacho Peak; investigators say there was nothing hazardous in the cars.

Nearly 40 empty train cars derailed Monday night near Picacho Peak, a Union Pacific spokesman confirmed, in an incident that was thought to be weather related.

The weather also damaged roofs in a complex of warehouses about 10 miles north of Picacho Peak in a Casa Grande industrial park, according to employees.

The train was carrying 107 cars from Houston to Los Angeles when 39 cars derailed near Interstate 10 at about 10:30, according to Mark Davis, a Union Pacific spokesman.

The cars were empty and investigators expect to have the tracks cleared by noon today, Davis said. About 40 trains a day pass through the area.

A National Weather Service meteorologist said a strong downburst occurred in that area around the same time, which likely contributed to the derailment.

Chris Rasmussen, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said there could have been a microburst, but the agency's weather radar can't register data in that specific altitude.

"Given from the radar information, it was the storm that caused derailment," Rasmussen said. "Was it a microburst? I wouldn't have that specific information. But it is likely, in my opinion. It was definitely severe."

Microbursts often develop in areas with midlevel dry air cooling beneath a thunderstorm cloud base, according to the National Weather Service's website.

About 10 miles to the north of Picacho Peak, portions of the roofs at the Federal Compress and Warehouse company were ripped off, according to employees who discovered the damage when they arrived to work Tuesday.

It’s unclear what caused a train to go off the tracks near Old Spanish Trail and Produce Row in the Third Ward Monday evening.

The locomotive and second train car came within a few feet of the overpass before resting on its side.

A freight train carrying construction materials derailed in the community Caparroso Macuspana, mishap that left no casualties or injuries, reported the General Coordination of Civil Protection State.

The managing director of Civil Protection, Jorge Méndez Landeros, said the derailment of the machine and a wagon train that had left Macuspana bound for Merida, Yucatan, occurred between 7: 15 and 7:30 am.

He said not having the information of which the railroad, which was transporting construction materials, mainly rods and cement bags belongs.

He added that the area elements in the area are working in coordination with Public Safety and Civil Protection Macuspana. The place is sheltered.

ALTOONA, Pa. -- A train carrying passenger vans and cars derailed in Altoona Saturday morning. Crews were called to the intersection of 10th Avenue and 21st Street. They found 26 train cars damaged; 17 were derailed. The impact of the crash flipped at least one car, which landed on a parked car feet away from several homes on 10th Avenue. Robert Hofer told 6 News he stepped outside when heard a loud crash coming from the tracks. "[I felt] terror. Absolute terror because I thought the one car was gonna come down right on top of me. I saw it go up in the air, and come down and I thought I was gonna die right there," Hofer said. No one was hurt. Residents living in nearby homes had to be evacuated for safety reasons. Neighbors nearby described hearing the screeching of metal as the train came to a rest across multiple tracks. "When it first happened [I] heard a bunch of slamming. [I] could hear the train cars hitting the rocks. [I] heard it slam and hit the ground. [I] heard everything skid, and slide and then there was this big cloud of brown smoke ... it was just horrible," said Casey Case. Norfolk Southern released a statement at 2 p.m. Saturday:

"An eastbound [Norfolk Southern] train from Fostoria, Ohio, heading to Wilmington, Del., derailed as it moved through a crossover track at 9:45 a.m. Seventeen cars derailed and nine cars are on their sides. No hazardous materials were involved. No injuries. The cars that are on their sides were hauling automobiles. The train has two locomotives and 107 loaded cars.   [Norfolk Southern] acted immediately to respond to the incident. We have contractors at the scene and on their way to begin clean up. [There's] no timetable yet for when cleanup will be complete. [The] cause is under investigation." Blair County EMA Director Dan Boyels said the passenger vans and cars being transported had two gallons of gasoline inside, making the plan to remove the train delicate. "We're not out of the woods yet. Nobody's gotten hurt so whenever [Norfolk Southern] starts moving the vehicles then we have to be ready in case we have a spark," Boyels said. Officials believe the cleanup could take days, but the crew's biggest concern was removing the train cars and fixing the track. The American Red Cross is helping those displaced by the crash

The mayor of Slave Lake says the federal government needs to do more to ensure the town's safety after the sixth train derailment in about four months.

"More action needs to be taken," said Mayor Tyler Warman, less than 24 hours after a CN train derailed east of Slave Lake.

"The safety of our residents, the safety of our property, the safety of our environment and the lake and the drinking water that we have is obviously paramount."

Four engines and 21  train cars went off the tracks at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the Mitsue Industrial area, about 10 kilometres east of town. Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Chris Krepski said three of the derailed cars were carrying dangerous chemicals, although none of the cars were leaking.

Two trains go through Slave Lake each day which, in total, transport 56,000 cars full of dangerous goods annually.

"Obviously concern is starting to be a word that's vastly understated," Warman said.

Warman posted a blog on the Slave Lake website Wednesday, saying “residents are nervous and uneasy and they have every right to be.”

Lisa Wilson lives just 20 metres from the tracks. She says she and her neighbours are fed up with the situation.

"There's a real problem here,” she said. “It's really scary to think about if it happened while the kids are walking home from school or somebody is driving by. I'm just thankful that nobody got hurt."

CN is facing criticism from an Alberta mayor after two of its freight trains derailed in the province in less than 24 hours.

On Friday afternoon, a train derailed near Wildwood, Alta., about 120 kilometres east of Edmonton. CN said 15 cars carrying coal went off the tracks around 3:30 p.m. MT. On Thursday night, up to 20 CN train cars carrying peas derailed near Vermilion, Alta.

Yellowhead County Mayor Gerald Soroka is frustrated that CN did not quickly inform him about the derailment in Wildwood.

“This is one of the things that we’ve had concerns with in the past dealing with CN,” Soroka said, adding that sometimes it has taken as long as 12 hours before CN has been provided details about derailments.

“We want to make sure our residents are safe and our first responders are safe,” Soroka said. “Without CN communicating that to us, we have no idea the dangerous situation that [first responders] are going into.”

As of 6 p.m. on Friday night, Soroka still had not heard from CN. He found out about the derailment from a staff member who drove by the scene.

Jennie Maerz, who owns an ice cream shop in Wildwood, said CN needs to inform the town whenever there has been a derailment.

“It’s rather worrisome,” she said. “Luckily [our councillor] said there was nothing that would be a danger to us, but it’s kind of scary to have train derailments when you live very close to the track.”

CN spokesman Jim Feeny said there were no injuries in either derailment. Both trains were not carrying dangerous goods.  

TSB investigators were sent to the site at Vermilion. The train was crossing a secondary highway at the time of the derailment, causing a temporary closure. Vermilion is about 200 kilometres east of Edmonton.

6 killed, over 40 injured as 2 trains collide near Gorakhpur

LUCKNOW: Six passengers were killed and over 40 injured when three coaches of the Lucknow Barauni Express (15204) derailed following collision with Krishak Express (15007) at Nandanagar railway crossing in Gorakhpur. ​

Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar told reporters that seven coaches have derailed.

Rescue teams of railway and Gorakhpur district administration have reached the spot and rescue operations are under way.

CPRO of Northeast Railways Alok Singh told reporters that though the exact cause of accident is not known yet.

The collision between the two trains took place at around 10pm, derailing three coaches of the Lucknow-Barauni Express.

Tuesday, October 7, 2014, 7:28 PM - A train derailment east of Clair, Saskatchewan has halted highway traffic in both directions and prompted evacuations, the RCMP announced Tuesday.

The accident occurred about a kilometre east of the community of Clair, about 190 km east of Saskatoon, at around 10:40 a.m. local time -- prompting the RCMP to issue an evacuation of about 50 residents in an 8-kilometre radius.

Children in a nearby school were being kept indoors.

According to CN, the train was carrying about 100 cars of mixed freight and about 26 derailed.

At least eight of the derailed cars were carrying toxin materials, including hydrochloric acid and petroleum distillates.

Black smoke billowed from the scene of the accident. Emergency crews on the scene say it could take hours to extinguish the fire. One witness told local media that flames were at least 30 metres high.

No injuries have been reported but Highway 5 has been closed in both directions.

The cause of the accident is unknown, but Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon says there was strong winds in the area at the time, with sustained winds around 35 km/hour and gusts up to 50 kilometres per hour.

First responders in Philadelphia prepare for oil train accidents

Over the last year, a sharp increase in accidents involving trains carrying crude oil has prompted emergency planners in Pennsylvania to make sure first responders are prepared.

Officials from at least seven government agencies, the railroad CSX and the refinery in South Philadelphia recently responded to a faux fiery train accident on a rail bridge in the city's downtown.

While there was no real emergency, the scenario was based on a minor derailment that happened in January that left six tanker cars intact, but leaning across the Schuylkill Arsenal Bridge.

The Philadelphia Fire Academy buzzed with activity as officials wearing badges from a variety of local, state and federal agencies made radio calls and worked in units to evacuate residents within a half mile of the hypothetical accident scene.

A picture of a crude oil tanker engulfed in flames was projected on a large screen at the front of the room. A coordinator with a microphone called out new details and told officials to stand by for more information.

It was one of several training exercises that have taken place in Pennsylvania and across the country as an increase in crude-by-rail shipments has also led to an increase in accidents. According to a spokesman for CSX, a similar training is planned for Bucks County.

No details are available at this time regarding environmental impact or whether or not injuries occured during the derailment.

TSB is unable to confirm the size of the train or how many cars have derailed.

A train has reportedly derailed in the Montreal River area, though details are scarce.

Transportation Safety Board confirms that it has received a report of a train derailment in the Montreal River area, south of Regent.

Regent refers to a siding where train cars are loaded with logs harvested in the area. It is north of Rand Lake, about seven or eight miles from Montreal River.

One report says multiple cars may have been involved in the derailment, though a TSB spokesperson could not confirm that.

The train was carrying equipment like tanks and Humvees.

Five cars derailed near B Street, just north of Fort Carson. The cars came off the tracks, but did not tip over.

A freight train on the route from Tehran to southern Ahwaz city derailed in Iran's western Lorestan province early morning on Oct. 28, Iranian ISNA news agency reported.
The railway is completely blocked due to the incident, Abdolkarim Darvishzadeh, an official with Iran’s Railways said, adding that several passenger trains are waiting for the way to be cleared.
The official went on to note that currently the railway employees are trying to reopen the path, which may be clear in several hours.
Darvishzadeh didn't reveal any details on possible casualties.
Darvishzadeh said that about 250 kilometers of Iran’s railway in the south have outdated tracks which should be replaced - which requires time, necessary funding, and can not be done short-term.
He said this process can be completed in at least 1 to 1,5 years.
Several similar incidents have happened in recent months in the country. For example, in July 2014 a similar incident left several people injured, while a passenger train moving in the direction of Shushtar-Mashhad derailed after crashed into a freight train near Tange Haft station in Lorestan province.
In 2009, at least three people were killed and two others got injured when two trains collided on the outskirts of Tehran. The accident happened when a passenger train en route from Mashhad to Tehran hit a maintenance train on the line near the town of Varamin.
Back in 2004, a train loaded with chemicals and fertilizer derailed and exploded along the same route, killing at least 300 people.

One person has reportedly been killed and 17 others injured after a two-car train derailed and fell onto the shoreline in Russia's Sakhalin region. Work to clear the debris and repair the track continues.

“All 17 victims have been taken to a hospitals in Kholmsk and Chekhov with injuries of varying degrees. The other passengers refused medical assistance,” said the press service of the regional branch of the Emergencies Ministry.

The accident happened at 18:35 local time between the port towns of Kholmsk and Chekhov when one of the two cars slid off the track, presumably due to water washing out soil under the railroad tracks. A rail maintenance foreman died as a result of the incident, a representative of the railway, Sergey Sashinskiy, told TASS. In total, 45 people were aboard the train.

“In this area, the road runs along the seashore, and it is constantly monitored,” Sashinskiy said, calling the accident a “fateful coincidence,” that was aided by severe weather and high tide waves.

The derailment, which damaged about 150 meters of railroad track, happened on a shoreline.

“According to a preliminary investigation, the cause of the accident was the eroded railway,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica -- A West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco) train has derailed in the vicinity of Capture land and Tawes Meadows in St Catherine a short while ago.

Information is sketchy at this point but OBSERVER ONLINE can report that no one was injured.

The train is reported to have been heading to May Pen, Clarendon and upon reaching a corner in the Capture land community the train line went loose resulting in the derailment. The engineer who was the only person on board escaped unhurt.

Boston-bound freighter derails in Andover, delays commuter rail

ANDOVER — A Pan Am Railways locomotive derailed Monday morning near Burnham Road, delaying the commute into Boston and forcing some commuters to hop on buses to detour around the accident site.

At 12:12 a.m. , a freighter pulling 11 cars filled with paper, scrap metal and food, went off the tracks as it was headed from Lawrence to Boston, according to Cindi Scarano, executive vice president of Pan Am Railways.

She said the cause of the accident was still under investigation.

According to photos and witnesses, the train simply fell off to the side of the track, but didn't pull any of the cars with it. Scarano said it was going 10 mph.

By 2:22 p.m., the train was put back on the tracks and went back to Lawrence. As of late Monday afternoon, workers were still replacing railroad ties in the vicinity of the accident, which was near the playing fields off Burnham Road, just before the train bridge over that street.

Mac Daniel, spokesman for Keolis Commuter Services, which is now running the Mass. Bay Transit Authority commuter rail system, said shuttle buses were needed for commuters between Andover and Haverhill "for most of the morning" and part of the afternoon.

"We restored regular service at about 3 p.m.," he said. The 3:14 p.m. train from Haverhill to Boston was delayed about 20 minutes because it had to go slow past the accident site, he said.

In addition, the inbound morning trains from Haverhill were also delayed since they had to move slowly past the accident site.

He said additional delays were not expected for today's commute

Two Trains Derail Near Casselton, ND

Two trains have derailed near Casselton, North Dakota.  The calls to the Red River Regional Dispatch Center started coming in just after 5:30 p.m. The Cass County Sheriff's Office Deputies, Casselton Fire and Ambulance were dispatched.

A Casselton firefighter confirms with Valley News Live they are responding to 3549 153rd Avenue SE in Casselton, which is right next to the Tharaldson Ethanol Plant. County Road 23 is blocked by train cars. 

The Cass County Sheriff's Office says they believe the two trains involved are BNSF and both were traveling at very low speeds. The train going eastbound was hauling lumber and the train going west had empty oil tankers. Approximately 25 cars were derailed between the two trains.

No injuries or fire have been reported as of 6:30 p.m. Propane tanks on BNSF property were hit during the derailment, but do not appear to be compromised.

A dramatic picture has emerged of a freight train that derailed at West Sleekburn in Northumberland on Monday.

The train, operated by DB Schenker came off the tracks while carrying coal from Blyth to Cottam power station.

The train ended up in a rail side hedge, with one carriage lying on its side.

Speaking to the Chronicle Live, a spokesman from DB Schenker Rail said: "We can confirm that one of our services derailed at the West Sleekburn junction at approximately 7.45pm on November 17.

"We deployed a highly trained team to the site to work closely with the relevant parties, establish a cause and minimise disruption.

An investigation is under way and we await the findings of that."

One of London's main railway stations was evacuated this morning after a  out on a train.

Passengers were ordered to leave Charing Cross after a 'screech and a bang' in the front carriage of the 10.55am departure to Robertsbridge, East Sussex, as it pulled into platform six.

Five fire engines were sent to the scene as passengers screamed and ran for the exit. No one was hurt, despite the driver being in the locomotive at the time.

Officers were able to deal with the fire quickly, but it also caused smoke damage to a live wire and  next door.

Marketing worker Jacob Lovie, 22, was waiting for a train to London Bridge when he heard what sounded like an explosion.

'I didn't see anyone hurt but there was a big bang and it was still on fire afterwards. It looked as though the fire was more on the platform and the building around it than the actual locomotive.

'The staff were clearing everyone out very quickly so it hit people more when they got outside the station and everyone was like "woah". There was one woman who looked really shaken up.'

The six-platform station between Trafalgar Square and the River Thames is a main terminal for trains from Kent, Sussex and south east London and handles almost 40 million passengers a year.

Rail operator Southeastern said there were delays of more than two hours on some services as they were diverted to other stations, including London Bridge and Victoria.

Charing Cross London Underground station was closed for 15 minutes but has since reopened. 

The mainline station remained closed until after midday and at that time a Southeastern spokesman could not  when it would re-open.

He also could not comment on claims that the train had hit the buffers. 

A Southeastern statement at 1pm said: 'Due to a fire at a station at London Charing Cross, train services running to and from this station may be cancelled, delayed or revised. London Charing Cross will not be served.

'An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as the problem has been fully assessed.'

A London Fire Brigade spokesman told MailOnline: 'There was a fire reported on a train at 10.52. Five fire engines were in attendance and the fire is now out on the train but we are dealing with the smoke damage to the hotel next door.'

At this time, Hwy. 90 remains closed from Paddle Wheel Rd to SA Jones Rd, according to Santa Rosa Sheriff's Office Dep. Rich Aloy.

It is anticipated to remain closed to thru-traffic for 24 hours or more.

SRSO is suggesting traffic to detour around the area as crews work to clear the damage. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol will be staged at the road closure to assure thru traffic is diverted.

Residents living in the affected area are allowed access to their homes but will need to show identification at the stop points.

CSX and fire units are still on scene. There are no reported injuries at this time and no major leaks have been reported.

A CSX train derailed near the Santa Rosa Industrial Park in Milton this morning, according to Joy Tsubooka, Public Information Officer for Santa Rosa County.

Approximately 20 of the 84 cars were impacted. Two cars were carrying phosphoric acid, but no leak has been found.

A 150-foot isolation area has been put in place for safety measures, but no evacuations were needed.

US Hwy. 90 between US Hwy. 87 to the Okaloosa line is currently closed for response and cleanup.

Emergency communications received the call at 8:54 a.m. and crews from the Florida Department of Transportation, Harold, East Milton, Whiting Filed, and the HAZMAT team from NAS Pensacola fire departments are responding.

Train derails in Otter Tail County, Minn.

BLUFFTON, Minn. – Emergency responders are on the scene of a 32-car train derailment near Highway 10 just northeast of here, law enforcement officials said Monday.

Otter Tail County officials said 32 cars carrying sugar, lumber and other nonhazardous materials derailed at about 7 Monday morning on the Burlington Northern line northeast of Bluffton, near Highway 10.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s office and the Minnesota State Patrol are on the scene.

No one’s been hurt, but a hazardous materials team from the Twin Cities is en route to the scene to confirm there’s no danger to the public.

Some of the train cars that derailed were empty, said a county spokesperson.

Motorists on Highway 10 between Wadena and Bluffton may encounter intermittent lane closures and possible delays as railroad crews access the site of a derailment, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.

The lane closures will be necessary for crews to move equipment in and out of the derailment site.

Train carrying coal derails in downtown Paris; sewer line could be compromised

PARIS, Ky. (WKYT) - Crews have been working to clean up for more than 12 hours now after a train derailment. It caused some train cars carrying coal to fall into a Bourbon County creek.

Paris police think the ground gave way beneath the tracks, causing the derailment in downtown Paris Monday morning. But CSX officials say the cause of the derailment has not yet been determined.

It was a 100-car coal train, but the CSX train lost three of its cars when four of them derailed. As of 6 p.m., one of the cars was still in Stoner Creek and two of them had been removed. The CSX train was traveling from Toledo to Virginia.

"The track is built on what's called a high wall," said Bourbon County Sheriff Mark Matthews. "And it's probably 100 years old or older and just gave way."

Crews and officials from CSX, R.J. Corman, emergency management, environmental protection agency, and emergency response teams along with first responders have been out there for hours and hours since the train derailment happened at about 3:30 a.m.

After learning two people were on the train at the time but no one was hurt, their focus has been the clean-up process.

"One car is in the creek. They're going to try to drag it across the creek and bring it out on the other side at some point," said Sheriff Matthews. "That seems to be what their plan is."

The sheriff says they won't know how much damage there is to the sewer line below the cars until they are moved.

Right now, crews on scene are worried raw sewage is possibly dumping into Stoner Creek. For the EPA, coal is not a concern, but it is a water quality violation so it will be removed.

The R.J. Corman Railroad Group has been heavily involved in removing the cars and coal from the creek. Two divisions are working on scene out of Columbus, Ohio and Huntington, West Virginia.

"The biggest concern is two things. The first being the coal that has gone into the water. The Kentucky Department of Water will be able to take care of any concerns with that as far as what needs to be done with it. We also have a main sewer line that has possibly been compromised on the cliff side," said Paris Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff McFarland.

The sheriff tells me no drinking water has been contaminated in Paris because it is up stream. There are worries of the spill contaminating places down stream like Cynthiana, but that has not yet been determined.

The sheriff says he's been told the track will be rerouted around where it caved in and trains should be running through there by Tuesday.

Police tell us the Main Street bridge over Stoner Creek has been closed for now so crews can move equipment in and out.

Officials with CSX say they are still assessing the damage. They also added that they regret any impact this event may have on the city of Paris and appreciate the quick reaction of first responders.

LAPORTE, Ind. -A 10 car freight train carrying coal to the NIPSCO generating station derailed in Michigan City Friday around 5:30 a.m.

The accident happened near Highway 12 on the county line between LaPorte and Porter counties.

The South Shore train's westbound routes were disrupted for a couple of hours, but has returned to normal operations. They are experiencing some delays.

No injuries were reported.

Crews are trying prevent coal ash waste that was spilled by Canadian Pacific Railway cars from fouling the waters of a creek in Banff National Park.

The material known as fly ash was in some train cars that derailed Friday into 40 Mile Creek near the resort community.

Parks Canada spokesman Bill Hunt says CPR crews have hauled out all but one of the cars containing fly ash from the water.
