BULLS GAP — Rescuers dodged a big bullet Tuesday night when a Southern Railroad train derailed in Bulls Gap, and the only cars that didn’t tip over were at the back of the line including four carrying 28,000 gallons of propane each.

The accident occurred around 10:20 p.m. as some cars were being pulled through a spur at Seminole Gas. Apparently a middle car came off the track, which caused chain reaction, tipping all cars in front of it including the engine.

The biggest cleanup was for diesel fuel that leaked out of the engine. Two men were on the train at the time of the derailment, including the engineer who suffered a head injury and other bumps and bruises when the engine tipped over.

The engineer was treated for injuries but returned to the accident site early Wednesday morning. as of noon Wednesday the cars were back upright and cleanup was continuing.

Hazardous material enters Hawkins County on the Southern Railroad through Bulls Gap on a daily basis, most of which is on its way to Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport.

For years Hawkins County emergency responders have been planning and training for a train derailment of this nature, and Tuesday night that plan was put into action.

In this case, however, it wasn’t a pass-through “Eastman” train that derailed, but some cars that were being picked up for transfer to the exchange yard in Bulls Gap.

Route 66-S, which runs parallel to the tracks, was closed from the Rt. 113 intersection near Cherokee High School to the 11-E intersection in Bulls gap for about an hour until the situation was assessed and it was determined that no hazardous material had spilled or was in danger of spilling.

Hawkins County Emergency Management Agency director Gary Murrell said Southern Railroad was investigating the cause of the derailment Wednesday afternoon.

“It was a switch engine pulling out of Seminole Gas,” Murrell said. “They had pulled in to pick up four loaded (propane) tank cars to take to Bulls Gap yard so the regular train could pick them up and take them to where they’re going. They were coming out of the yard on the switch track and they don’t know how it happened, but somewhere in the middle of that train something happened and it started pulling cars off the track. It just pulled off everything from that (middle) car forward. It turned everything over including the engine.”

There were some empty tankers behind the engine.

The first emergency responders found the badly shaken engineer laying on the ground outside the train, and initially it wasn’t know that those first tankers were empty.

Aside from the four propane tanks at the rear of the train, there were some cars carrying scrap metal and some carrying plastic pellets. Some of the pellets also spilled.

Hepaco Environmental and American Environmental cleanup companies were both called to assist with the cleanup.

“Hepaco said they would be there for days for the diesel,” Murrell said. “The diesel is going to be the biggest thing. We’ve had EPA there. All the diesel was confined to one side of the railroad tracks, and they’re digging everything up to get the diesel out of the ground.”

Murrell said the emergency services from Hawkins and Greene counties that responded deserved to be commended for working together to put the emergency plan into action while the situation was being assessed.

“This is why we put in so many hours of training,” Murrell said. “If it had turned out to be a major disaster, we had the highway blocked already. That way if there was an evacuation we only had to worry about getting people out, and not new people coming in. There are a lot worse things than propane moving up and down that line, and it’s good to know everybody (in emergency services) is on the same page if something major does happen.”

An investigation is under way after a Virgin Trains service from London to Chester partially derails and crashes into barriers.

A train has derailed and smashed into the buffers at Chester railway station, leaving one man in hospital with back injuries.

Emergency services were called to the station shortly after midday following reports that the five-carriage train had partially derailed.

Among the passengers was Jake Pickering, who wrote on his Twitter page: "The @VirginTrains train I was on from London has just crashed at Chester station. I believe everyone is okay."

A Virgin Trains spokeswoman said: "We can confirm an incident took place earlier today at Chester Station.

"The incident took place at approximately 12.10pm and the train involved was the 10.10am Virgin Trains service from London Euston to Chester. No other train was involved.

"The emergency services have been called, but at this stage it is believed that there are no serious injuries."

A statement from British Transport Police said: "All coaches of the five-car train have remained upright.

"One man has been taken to a local hospital by North West Ambulance Service, with reported injuries to his back."

The statement said the crash was "being investigated to establish the full circumstances surrounding the derailment".

Eight Die in Train Derailment in Brazil

SAO PAULO – Eight people died when a train derailed over the weekend in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, officials said Monday.

The initial death toll was reported as six, but firefighters recovered two more bodies from the wreckage early Monday.

The derailment occurred Sunday night in the poor Jardin Conceicao neighborhood of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, a city located about 438 kilometers (272 miles) from Sao Paulo.

Nine cars loaded with corn went off the tracks and hit four dwellings, destroying the structures and killing eight people, including children ages 2 and 5, who were inside.

Six other people were hospitalized, with two of them listed in serious condition.

Railway operator America Latina Logistica, or ALL, released a statement in which it expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and offered assistance.

“The causes of the accident will be investigated in an administrative process,” ALL said.

Company spokesmen denied that the train was traveling at more than 40 kph (25 mph), the speed limit in urban areas.

Train speeds are controlled via satellite, preventing engineers from speeding, ALL said.

Two derailments occurred in Sao Jose do Rio Preto in 2002, but there were no injuries.

ALL was fined in 2009 for failing to comply with an agreement to prevent derailments.

Evacuees at high school, Willard

WILLARD, OH (WOIO) -

Police say 400 households were affected by a chemical spill on CSX train tracks in Huron County.

At 11:42 p.m. Tuesday, a caller notified police of a leaking train on North Main Street in Willard.

Upon arrival, police found that the 33,000 gallon railcar was leaking styrene monomer, a highly flammable substance, through a four inch hole.

Authorities decided to immediately evacuate residents within a one-half mile radius. Willard High School is being used as an emergency shelter.

CSX released the following statement on Wednesday:

CSX Transportation is working with first responders in Willard, Ohio, to assist residents who have evacuated their homes due to a tank car leak. The company is establishing a community outreach center at the Willard Town Hall, and securing hotel rooms for displaced residents. The leak from the tank car of styrene monomer, a flammable product used in the manufacture of plastics, has been stopped. The tank car was damaged in a derailment at the CSX Willard Yard. CSX thanks the first responders for their support, and pledges to work with them and the community to resolve this incident as safely and quickly as possible.

There is really not much of a health threat, but the clean up is the issue.  Any kind of spark could cause a serious explosion or fire.  

No word on when evacuees will be allowed to go back to their homes.

BNSF train derails near Friend

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway workers were hard at work addressing a derailment that occurred at 2:55 a.m. on Nov. 25 near Friend. 

“The train derailed on the siding and was moving slowly when it derailed,” Andy Williams, BNSF public affairs director, said.

Out of the 75 cars, seven of them derailed and four fell on their sides.

“The main line in that area is open. That track has several trains a day, but it is not impacting customers because we can reroute the traffic,” Williams said.

Williams said that those working on the track hoped to have it up and running at approximately 5 p.m. on Nov. 25.

Damages to the track have yet not been determined, according to Williams.

At least 4 dead, more than 60 injured after NY commuter train derails in Bronx

A commuter rail line derailed in New York City Sunday morning, killing at least four people.

Officials said that at least 63 others were injured when the Metro-North train jumped the tracks as it was rounding a curve about 100 yards from a stop. Fire officials said as many as 11 of those injured were "critical."

Metro-North said the seven-car 5:54 a.m. diesel train from Poughkeepsie derailed at 7:22 a.m., just feet from the water near the historic Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, NBC New York reported. It was due at Grand Central at 7:43 a.m.

The locomotive was on the north end pushing the cars southward.

Joel Zaritsky said he was on his way to New York City for a dental convention. 

"I was asleep and I woke up when the car started rolling several times. Then I saw the gravel coming at me, and I heard people screaming. There was smoke everywhere and debris. People were thrown to the other side of the train," he said, holding his bloody right hand. 

At least four train cars were knocked completely on their side, and officials said it would be awhile to assess all of the damage and injuries involved. Early reports said that cars had gone into the Hudson river, but they narrowly avoided plunging into the frigid waters.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said the big curve where the derailment occurred is in a slow speed area approaching the station.

A commuter rail line derailed in New York City early Sunday morning, killing at least four people.

Dozens of firefighters were on the scene helping pull people from the wreckage. Many people were transported to area hospitals for treatment, said New York City Fire Department spokesman Michael Parrella. 

Speaking at the scene, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the train operator was among the injured.

At first, he said, he didn't notice that the train had flipped over.

"I didn't realize it had been turned over until I saw a firefighter walking on the window," he said.

As a result of the crash, Metro-North Hudson line service was suspended in both directions, and Amtrak service was suspended be tween New York City and Albany, rail officials said. 

A senior Metro-North official told NBC News there was no evidence of criminality, but cautioned that it was still early in the investigation. National Transportation Safety Bureau officials confirmed a "go-team" is on their way to the area to launch an investigation.

In July, a CSX freight train hauling trash on the same line derailed near the the same area of the Bronx. No one was injured but questions were raised about the safety of the track design, which has a notoriously sharp turn right before the station.

Officials said the train was carrying a noxious, flammable material

A train carrying hazardous materials derailed near New Jersey highway early Thursday, officials said.

The train was backing into a facility near Exit 12 of the New Jersey Turnpike in Carteret — across the border from Staten Island — when one car of the train flipped on its side about 1 a.m., authorities said.

Another car partially overturned in the wreck.

Investigators were still trying to determine what caused the train to derail.

Train derails in Two Harbors

An ore train derailed in Two Harbors early Thursday afternoon and two injuries were reported, Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson told the News Tribune. - 

A Canadian National Railway train filled with iron ore pellets from the Iron Range derailed in Two Harbors early Thursday afternoon and two injuries were reported, Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson said.

According to the Two Harbors Police Department, at 1:14 p.m. the THPD, Lake County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division, Two Harbors Fire Department, Lake County Ambulance Service and Lake County Search & Rescue responded to the accident.

The two CN employees were transported from the scene via ambulance. Patrick Waldron, a spokesman for CN, said the injuries appear to be minor. The two other employees on the train were uninjured.

The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. on a bend in the tracks between Northshore Manufacturing and Two Harbors Lumber on Fourth Avenue, Johnson said. Waldron said the area is considered the CN train yard.

Uwe Kausch, a sales manager at Northshore Manufacturing, said the rail cars were everywhere, “stacked up like cord wood,” with some pointing up vertically.

A typical ore train has just over 100 cars and Kausch said it looked like most of them were affected by the derailment. Waldron said there were 107 cars but said it hadn’t been determined how many were damaged or upended.

LeRoy Veness, who owns a repair shop about 100 yards from the rail line, said he heard the derailment.

“Our whole building was rumbling,” Veness said.

Andy Johnson of Two Harbors was at the recycling center next to the repair shop and saw the accident take place.

“It was a rush,” Johnson said. He saw taconite pellets fly into the air and said it made a “loud rushing noise.”

Johnson said he immediately knew it was a derailment.

Waldron said a CN crew is on the scene investigating.

Train derailment sends two to the hospital in Two Harbors

Two Harbors, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities are investigating what caused a train to derail just south of Two Harbors, Minnesota Thursday afternoon.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office, along with Two Harbors Police, the Minnesota DNR and rescue squads were called to the incident around 1:15pm.

The 107 car CN train that was carrying iron ore pellets derailed next to the lumber yard. Between 20-50 cars came off the track.

Two crew members were hurt and were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two other crew members on the train were not hurt.

Patrick Waldron the CN Regional Public Relations Director spoke with the Northland's NewsCenter this afternoon saying they have not received an update on the conditions of the crew members that were hurt.

Waldron also said he was unsure if the National Transportation Safety Administration would send investigators to the scene.

Authorities continue to clean up the incident.

NORFOLK -- A Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad train derailed while changing tracks at East Princess Anne and Ingleside roads in Norfolk Thursday afternoon causing traffic to be re-directed.

City of Norfolk spokeswomen Karen Parker-Chesson said emergency communications received word around 2:30 p.m. 

Parker-Chesson says no injuries have been reported. 

Robin Chapman with Norfolk Southern told 13News Now that a Norfolk Portsmouth Belt Line train was on a Norfolk Southern track. The train was about to get on a Bay Coast Railroad track when it derailed. The Norfolk Southern Princess Anne line is now blocked by the derailment.

Chief Williamson with the Norfolk Fire Department said no evacuations were issued and they are currently investigating what the train was hauling.  Hazmat crews are on the scene as a precaution.

Kenya cargo train derails in Nairobi slum, six injured

A cargo train derailed in a sprawling Nairobi slum on Sunday, injuring at least six people as it crashed into makeshift homes where people are feared still trapped, rescuers and residents said.

Transport Minister Michael Kamau, who was at the scene, told journalists that six injured had so far been taken to hospital.

"We have rescued six people, most of them were crying out from the structures that were crushed and they couldn't move, but we managed to dig out and rescue them," said Johnson Maina of the fire service department.

Local people suggested casualties may be lower than initially feared as most of those whose houses were destroyed appear not to have been at home when the accident happened, having either left for church or gone back to their villages for the Christmas holidays.

"Because of the time of year and the time of day a lot of people were not at hone," a local chief who identified himself as Patrick told AFP.

"The initial report is that people are feared trapped, but so far we have not received reports of any actual missing persons," a Red Cross emergency officer at the scene told AFP.

The Red Cross had earlier said that "scores were feared trapped".

"We are thankful for the swift effort in rescuing people, it is by luck that it did not happen at night when people are sleeping. We could have a huge disaster here," said Mercline Akelo who sells fish just next to the rail line.

"I was about to open my business, I had gone for stock and heard about it on my way back, I don't know what could have happened if the accident had occurred when I was selling my fish," she went on.

"The rescue efforts are underway, we cannot talk of the number of those injured at the moment," Nairobi Police chief Benson Kibue told AFP.

One of Africa's largest slums, Kibera's tin-roofed shacks are home to an estimated quarter of a million people, according to an NGO that carried out a population study there.

Kamau said the government has long warned the residents of Kibera not to put up houses right next to the railway, which crosses the settlement.

"We have always warned people against encroaching on the line," he said. So they must move, we cannot continue having such disasters," he went on.

Some 10 railcars were engulfed in flames after two BNSF Railway Co. trains derailed on Monday about 25 miles west of Fargo, N.D., a local official said. At least one of the trains was carrying oil, the railroad said.

Fire and hazardous materials team are battling the fire, which is about a mile west of Casselton, N.D., said Sgt. Tara Morris of the Cass County Sherrif’s office. She added that all people and animals within a 10-mile radius of the town should find shelter and avoid going outside until the area is deemed safe.

No injuries have been reported, local officials said.

The Fort Worth, Tex.-based railroad said one train derailed on a track around 2:10 p.m. Central Time and “impacted” a second train on another track, causing it to derail.

A spokesman for BNSF confirmed its trains were involved and at least one of the trains was carrying oil. He said railroad employees were on their way to the accident.

BNSF, a unit of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., told its customers it couldn’ t estimate when the main tracks would reopen, but warned customers they might experience delays of 24 to 48 hours on shipments through the corridor.

This is the latest in a series of derailments of crude-oil trains this year. In July, 47 people were killed in a crude-oil train derailment that wiped out much of the Quebec town of Lac-Mégantic. In November, a train carrying crude oil derailed in a rural area of Alabama.

Authorities urged residents to evacuate a small North Dakota town late Monday after a mile-long train carrying crude oil derailed nearby after colliding with another train.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said Monday night it is "strongly recommending" that people in the town of Casselton and anyone living 5 miles to the south and east evacuate to shelters set up in Fargo, which is about 25 miles away. Casselton has about 2,400 residents. 

The sheriff's office said the National Weather Service was forecasting a shift in the winds that would push the plume of smoke down, possibly posing a health risk. Earlier, authorities had advised nearby residents to shelter inside their homes.

The freight train carrying crude oil hit another train hauling grain that had derailed on Monday afternoon, triggering an explosion and sending flames shooting more than 100 feet into the air. No injuries were immediately reported.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and local emergency crews responded to reports of a derailment near the city of Casselton, N.D., and discovered the oil train burning, with up to 10 cars fully engulfed, said sheriff’s Sgt. Tara Morris.

“There was an explosion, where a car let loose and there was a giant fireball, hundreds of feet in the air,” said Assistant Chief Gary Lorenz of the City of Fargo Fire Department, who was in touch with a crew on the scene.

“It’s burning very strong right now,” he said. “You can see the plume of smoke for 25 miles.”

The collision occurred at a street intersection just before 2:20 p.m., when a westbound BNSF train carrying grain derailed and was then hit by an eastbound train carrying oil, Cecily Fong,  a public information officer with North Dakota Emergency Services, told NBCChicago.com.  Both trains were owned by BNSF, she said.

Amy McBeth, a spokeswoman for BNSF Railway, confirmed the collision but said she could provide no additional details.

Fong said the train carrying grain was approximately 111 cars long and crews were able to get the unaffected cars separated from the burning wreckage and moved out of the way.

Fong said the Federal Aviation Administration  was putting flight restrictions in place over the area due to the smoke.

NBC affiliate KVLY in Fargo, N.D., reported that the train emitted a cloud of toxic smoke but that prevailing winds were blowing the smoke away from Casselton.

Kevin Thompson, a Federal Railroad Administration spokesman, told NBC News that the agency was sending investigators to the scene. 

"The Federal Railroad Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration have investigative teams en route to North Dakota and will work in concert with the National Transportation Safety Board, the lead investigator, to ascertain all the relevant facts that may have contributed to the accident," he said. "FRA's goal in all investigations is to determine the facts and learn how we can minimize risk to prevent a similar incident in the future."

Lucknow: Rail traffic on the Gorakhpur section of North Eastern Railway in Uttar Pradesh was hit on Tuesday when two wagons of a goods train transporting kerosene derailed between Gonda and Gorakhpur, officials said.
No one was injured in the incident.
The train was headed to Gorakhpur when the derailment took place. The contents of the wagons spilled all over, forcing railway authorities to shut down the section for all up and down trains.
"We are trying to normalise traffic on the sector as soon as possible. For now, some trains are stranded," an official said.

Witness saw 'big cloud of orange smoke'

A CN Rail train carrying dangerous goods has derailed and caught fire in northwest New Brunswick, not far from the U.S. border.

Jim Feeny, director of public and government affairs for CN Rail, said the train derailment happened just after 7 p.m. AT about five kilometres outside of Plaster Rock in Wapske, N.B. He said the train was coming from central Canada and was heading to Moncton.

He said the train was carrying dangerous goods. 

“The number of derailed cars has not yet been confirmed. We do know that there are dangerous goods cars on the train and that they are in the derailment area these include cars carrying LPG — which is propane — and crude oil but we cannot confirm if those cars are actually derailed at this point. We know they’re in the immediate area,” said Feeny.  

He also confirmed there was a fire at the site, but said it's unclear what is fuelling the fire.

RCMP Cpl. Marty Van Dijk said emergency crews are working with the train's conductor to identify the cars and determine whether they contain hazardous materials. 

“Our emergencyresponders are just beginning to arrive, the local fire department is also on site,” he said.

Feeny said it's too early to determine what caused the derailment. 

He said none of the train's crew was injured. There's been no word of other injuries at this time.

Van Dijk said a HAZMAT team is en route. He said a two-kilometre radius is being cleared and evacuated around the site. Most of the residents within that radius have been moved out.  

There were 122 cars on the train. It's still not clear how many derailed. 

'I saw a great big cloud of orange smoke'

J.D. Saddler and his girlfriend were at her grandmother's house, next to the train tracks in Plaster Rock. 

"After we left her house, we were driving across the river over to Wapske and that’s where the train derailed. And as we were driving to Wapske, I saw a great big cloud of orange smoke and the flames were really high in the air, the smoke was really high in the air," he said. 

Saddler said they went home. About an hour later, he drove back and the route was blocked off. People were being evacuated from the area.

“I think probably a lot of people are scrambling right now,” he said.

Saddler's father owns a sawmill located not far from where the train derailed happened.

“We were a little concerned because our place of business is located half a mile from where the [derailment] happened but our place wasn’t affected,” he said.

"There’s about 10 or 12 homes along the road where the train derailed.“

A woman who lives in nearby Wapske said she was asked to evacuate her home, located about two kilometres away. She said she can't see any fire from her house.  She said there are about eight homes located near the site.

Not the first CN derailment in Plaster Rock

A CBC investigation into rail safety revealed that CN Rail did not report to authorities more than 1,800 derailments and accidents, including 44 on key rail arteries.

One of those derailments occurred in Plaster Rock which was one of two incidents that prompted the Transportation Safety Board to seek a summons ordering CN to turn over all accident records.

Train derails along Bonansinga Drive in Quincy

Workers were on the scene Tuesday morning after five railcars derailed Monday night along the Burlington Junction Railway shortline along Bonansinga Drive in Quincy, just north of the Pier restaurant.

The cars, which belong to BNSF Railway, left the tracks about 8 p.m. Monday, blocking traffic for about 90 minutes at Front and Broadway, according to the Quincy Police Department. One of the five cars rolled onto its side, spilling its load, while another had its wheels ripped off. One car was loaded with soybeans, a second with cattle feed and the rest were empty, according BNSF Railway Public Affairs Director Andy Williams.

No cause for the derailment was announced. The incident remains under investigation by BNSF.

CALEDONIA-- A train derailed in Caledonia Sunday morning just east of the intersection of 5 Mile Road and Nicholson Road. It happened around 6 a.m.

Authorities said that 19 cars had derailed and that  there was some concern that some of them could fall off the overpass at that location.

For safety reason, the roads in that area have been shut down as officials respond to the situation.

The train is a Union Pacific freight train. It had 3 locomotives and 135 cars loaded with coal.

There have been no injuries reported.

The train was heading from Wyoming to Sheboygan.

Union Pacific is sending heavy equipment to get the cars back on the track.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

A train from Chicago derailed early Monday morning in Philadelphia, leaving a tanker car and a boxcar leaning off a city bridge. Seven cars of the 101-car freight train derailed on the Schuylkill Arsenal Railroad Bridge where it crosses over the Schuylkill River, according to CSX spokesman Gary Sease. Six cars carried crude oil, but no leaking was reported. Another car contained sand, he said. No injuries were reported. The U.S. Coast Guard brought in a 25-foot response boat from its Philadelphia station to enforce a safety zone in the river just south of the bridge. Local police firefighters and emergency personnel also responded to the scene. "CSX would like to thank Philadelphia emergency first responders who arrived at the scene quickly and took prompt precautionary action," said a statement from CSX. Both directions of the Schuylkill Expressway were closed shortly after the derailment as crews worked to stabilize the cars. By 2:30 a.m. traffic began to move eastbound. It took another hour for the westbound lanes to open. There was no information as of 7 a.m. as to what caused the derailment. The bridge was built around the turn of the 20th Century and has since carried rail traffic for more than a century.

Roads will close to clear train derailment in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – St. Louis police will close several streets while crews try to clear a train derailment in south St. Louis.

Several cars jumped the tracks on a trestle near Interstate 44 and Wellington Road near the rail yard in the Ellendale neighborhood.

St. Louis police will close the roadway at Ellendale and Wellington and at Wabash andTholozon in both directions.

The closure could last from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.   Railroad recovery crash teams are on the scene surveying the damage and have moved equipment into the area to help get the train cars back on the tracks.

A minor train derailment tied up traffic in downtown Janesville during Wednesday morning's rush hour.

Police said two grain cars on a Wisconsin and Southern Railroad train jumped the tracks.

Rock County sheriff's officials got the word around 5 a.m. Media reports said none of the cars tipped over, and the fallen grain did not pose a health risk to anyone nearby.

Four box cars pulled by a Union Pacific train headed to Portland, Ore., went off the tracks Monday afternoon about 35 miles north of Redding, in the Pollard Flat area north of Lakehead.

Authorities said no one, including the two-man crew on the train, was injured in the incident, reported at 3:32 p.m. between Gibson Road and Pollard Flat under Interstate 5.

A Canadian National Railway train carrying hazardous materials derailed this morning outside New Augusta.

Canadian National Railway Spokesman Patrick Waldron said the train was traveling from Jackson to Mobile, Ala., at the time of its derailment around 9 a.m.

The Associated Press reports 50 residents from New Augusta have been evacuated.

“Our initial indications are that 18 cars are involved in the derailment,” he said. “There were more cars on the train. Several of the cars are carrying hazardous materials including fuel oil, and one is containing methanol. There are no reports of injuries. There are reports of fuel oil leaking from at least one of the cars.”

SEDALIA, Colo. — A train derailed in the small town of Sedalia, near Castle Rock, Thursday afternoon.

Initial reports indicated that 14 cars were off the tracks. The derailment happened near the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Manhart Street.

Freight train carrying 720 tonnes of ammonia derails near Huelva

A FREIGHT train carrying 18 tanks of Ammonia was overturned by a landslide near Huelva early this morning.

The train derailed 4km from the town of La Nava at 3:40am, but only the first two ammonia wagons, each carrying 40 tonnes, came off the track.

Firefighters were able to control the leak from the first tank and authorities claim there is no danger to the public.

The two drivers of the train, which was on its way to Madrid and then Portugal, were bruised but not seriously injured.

The railroad will remain closed until the accident has been cleared, the ammonia transferred and the landslide assessed.

The fire service, Guardia Civil, the Emergency Andalucia Group (GREA) and emergency technicians have all been working to clear the danger.

Freight train derails in Bloomington

A derailed Union Pacific train caused traffic to back up for more than an hour Saturday afternoon along  Farm-to-Market Road 616 and state Highway 185.

Raquel Espinoza, a Union Pacific spokeswoman, said no injuries were reported when five empty rail cars derailed in the company's Bloomington yard. The incident is being investigated, and no preliminary results were available Saturday.

Deputies with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office responded at 3:50 p.m. to assist with traffic control but did not investigate the derailment. Highway traffic resumed about 5 p.m., a sheriff's dispatcher said.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A goods train heading south jumped the rails near Taman Tan Sai Gin close to the old railway station here early Sunday but no one was injured.

State Works, Utilities and Transport Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said five wagons loaded with chip board derailed and disrupted the schedule of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) commuter services.

“KTMB is in the process of doing clearing work, including lifting up the coaches and other repair works which is expected to be completed this evening,” Lim said when contacted.

“A 100-tonne crane was brought to the scene to lift up the derailed wagons,” he added.

All the affected passengers were transported in buses to other train stations to resume their journey, Lim said.

Train Derails in Pennsylvania Amid Heavy Snow

Twenty-one cars of a freight train carrying oil and propane derailed in western Pennsylvania on Thursday morning during heavy snowfall, according to officials.

The Norfolk Southern Corp. train jumped off the tracks in Vandergrift, Pa., and one car struck a nearby steel plant, said Dan Stevens, an emergency Management Coordinator in Westmoreland County, Pa. — about 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh.

The cars that derailed were carrying propane and crude oil, but the accident did not spark a fire and no one was injured, Stevens said.

The employees of the steel plant were forced to evacuate because the crash compromised "the integrity of the building," Stevens said.

Stevens said the train derailed while navigating "a slight bend," and while snow pummeled the area, a cause would not be determined until Norfolk Southern finished their investigation.

Train derails overnight in Westford, town manager says no one notified

WESTFORD, MAss. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A train derailed in Westford overnight, and police were responding to the incident Thursday morning. 

The call about the train came in overnight, according to Town Manager Jodi Ross. The train derailed at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, and nobody from the company that owns the train, Pan Am, notified anyone in the town, Ross said.

The fire chief noticed the incident as he drove by the train at 9:30 a.m. At around 10:50 a.m. Thursday, Westford police announced that Bridge Street had been closed at North Main and Pine Ridge Road. 

A spokesperson for Pan Am said  that the train has 12 cars in total, some carrying paper goods, one carrying latex and two others with propane. The two cars with propane went off the tracks, and a locomotive was expected Thursday afternoon to pull them back onto the tracks.

A call went out to warn residents within a half-mile of the incident, but Ross said there is no hazard at this point.

Members of the town's board of health, fire department and police department were meeting Thursday morning to discuss the incident and how to get the cars back on the tracks successfully without them toppling over.

The Pan Am spokesperson said the company did not notify the town because crews sent out Wednesday night did not feel there was an immediate danger, and because all of the train cars are upright.

No one was hurt in the incident but firefighters and Urgence-Environnement had a busy morning trying to recover the fuel, which spilled from one of the train’s two locomotives.

The train was transporting containers full of merchandise and tanks of grain from Halifax to Montreal. Two tankers of grain and both locomotives came off the rails but remained upright.

André Ménard, a spokesman for the provincial environmental emergency agency Urgence-Environnement, told Radio-Canada that around 3,000 litres of fuel were recovered and the other 500 litres were absorbed by the soil without risk to the water supply and sewer system.

The Transportation Safety Board and CN are now investigating the derailment.

“It’s too early to suggest a cause,” said Louis-Antoine Paquin, a spokesman for CN.

Two injured after train derails in Auckland

A derailment of an empty train in Auckland early this morning is being investigated by Auckland rail.

Transdev Auckland staff were taken to hospital with minor injuries and have now been released following the derailment near Westfield junction just before 2am.

The empty train was being pulled by a locomotive and was travelling southbound to Westfield Depot where Auckland trains are serviced and maintained.

The locomotive and first carriage left the track, with the locomotive coming to rest on its side and the carriage remaining upright.
 
Transdev Auckland Chief Operating Officer Martin Kearney says Transdev and KiwiRail will be investigating to establish the circumstances of the incident.

A driver and train manager were on the train and "had a significant shock", Mr Kearney says.

Buses are currently replacing trains between Otahuhu and Britomart on Auckland's Southern Line.

Earlier the Fire Service told ONE News the train's fuel tank ruptured, resulting in several thousand litres of diesel being spilled.

A massive train derailment left a highway shut down and dozens of cars off the tracks in spectacular fashion Saturday afternoon.

Very little information was yet available Saturday night as to what caused 45 of the train’s empty coal cars to derail just outside of Olney at approximately 3 p.m.

BNSF spokesperson Matthew Jones said no one was injured in the incident. He said the train was eastbound from British Columbia at the time of the derailment.

A notice from the Montana Department of Transportation issued shortly after the derailment indicated the closure of U.S. 93 was expected to last until 11 p.m.

Troopers with the Montana Highway Patrol diverted motorists through Olney and around the area of the derailment, minimizing the highway closure’s effect on traffic.

A massive plume of thick, black smoke was visible for miles in West El Paso Monday afternoon.  

The fire that is the source of the flames appears to have begun when a freight train derailed in the Upper Valley.  It happened shortly after 1 p.m. near Doniphan and Talbot (Transmountain).  A witness at a neighboring business told ABC-7 that approximately 15 cars appear to be off the tracks.

A brush fire may have been started by sparks in the derailment.   The fire reportedly close to neighboring businesses.  One business manager told firefighters of six propane canisters on his property.  

Firefighters from El Paso, and the West Valley Fire Department determined the train did not carry toxic chemicals. Canutillo Independent School District administrators ordered all air conditioners at nearby Canutillo elementary and Alderete Middle School turned off to prevent the smoke from going into the buildings. Service was restored within a couple of hours.

At least  18 units were dispatched to battle the fire. Firefighters put it out by early afternoon and no injuries were reported, though the train remained off the track, upright.

MAIDEN ROCK, Wis. (WEAU) -- A train containing sand derailed at the Chester Street crossing in the Village of Maiden Rock.

On Sunday, at just about 12 in the morning, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department says they were notified by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway that there had been a train derailment.

Employees of BNSF on scene said the set of cars had derailed when they were in the process of moving them.

The bow will become more stressed, cracking rock inland from San Diego all the way to the Mississippi, and forcing adjustments north and south of this point too, from the Aleutian Islands to the tip of Mexico. Sinkholes and crevasses will proliferate throughout the US in her stretch zones, in a swath that ranges from the New England states south to the tip of Florida and all points west. This is a large bow. Then quakes will increase to the point of being considered magnitude 6-7 along the long New Madrid fault line and its attendant splinters. The New Madrid adjustment will thus not sneak up on you, but will be well announced.

Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has unearthed fresh problems with its rail safety database after finding railway companies did not report more than 100 accidents, minor derailments and incidents.

TSB chief operating officer Jean Laporte confirms his agency in December began a review of all rail carriers after a CBC News investigation revealed that CN Rail had not reported more than 1,800 mostly minor accidents and incidents between 2000 and 2007.

The TSB database is used by safety investigators to analyze trends and spot potential risks across the rail system and has become increasingly important given the growing number of shipments of dangerous goods.

UPPER MT. BETHEL TWP., Pa. - Crews are responding to a train derailment in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County. Emergency communications officials said six train cars carrying sand derailed around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Slateford Road. No injuries were reported, according to emergency officials.

Guwahati: Over 50 passengers were injured, 19 of them seriously, when the engine and 10 coaches of the Dimapur-Kamakhya BG Express derailed at Teghiria in central Assam in the wee hours today.

The derailment damaged 100 mts of railway line leading to cancellation of eight trains on the route. The Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express has also been detained at Lumbing, railway officials said.

They said the engine and 10 coaches of the train derailed near Jagiroad in Morigaon district at around 2 am. Nineteen passengers were seriously injured and have been admitted to various hospitals including Gauhati Medical College Hospital, police said.Many passengers were discharged after receiving first aid in Morigaon Civil Hospital.

The ten coaches of the Dimapur-Kamahya train jumped the tracks but did not topple down near Jagiroad in Morigaon district at 0205 am, sources said.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated, railway officials said.

Senior railway officials have rushed to the site and rescue operations are on.
