AMSTERDAM -- Almost 125 people were injured, many seriously, when two Dutch commuter trains crashed head-on in Amsterdam on Saturday [April 21, 2012], police said.

There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but of those injured, 13 suffered major injuries while 43 or 44 were badly injured, a spokesman said. About 70 suffered minor injuries.

A trauma helicopter was used to bring the injured to hospital, a spokesman for railways group NS said.

The trains did not serve Schiphol international airport, the NS spokesman added, but the accident disrupted airport train service.

Some people were lifted from the wreckage by cranes while others were led away from the crash site in protective wraps to dozens of waiting ambulances, while police cars and fire trucks stood by.

"We heard a loud bang. I went outside and saw people on the street in panic," a woman at the scene told broadcaster AT5.  "We then saw what had happened. Quite quickly there were emergency services at the scene. It was managed well. Train Derailed by Landslide (Scotland, April 27)

Two people were rushed to hospital yesterday after a train was derailed by a landslide thought to have been caused by heavy rainfall.

All 17 passengers on board the two-carriage train were evacuated after it came off the tracks near Clarborough Tunnel in West Portal, Retford, in Nottinghamshire, just after noon.

Two of the passengers, and the train driver, received minor injuries when the train was struck by debris from the landslide and were taken to hospital.

The rest were taken by taxi to nearby stations to continue their journeys.

A BTP spokesman said it is thought the landslide was caused by the large amount of rain that has showered the county.

Train Derails Near Red Deer, Alberta (April 21)

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the derailment of 10 freight cars, about 30 kilometres south of Red Deer, Alta., early this morning.

Three of the cars jacknifed at around 1 a.m. MT and came into contact with a second freight train next to the main track at Campaign Station, John Cottreau, manager of TSB media relations, told CBC News.

Cottreau said there were no injuries, and no dangerous goods were involved in the accident, which happened on the Red Deer subdivision, a rail line between Calgary and Red Deer.

He said some of the cars contained residue of glycol. Cottreau could not provide further details, but said the substance is not classified as a dangerous good under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.

The cause of the derailment is not known. A TSB investigator has been sent to the scene.

CANOE – Residents of this small community are used to rumbling of trains only 10 metres from their homes, but what they heard in the darkness of Monday morning was something else.

"There was a loud bang," said Brian Mortensen, who lives about three houses back from the CP Rail tracks.

"At the same time you hear screeching metal and twisting up."

Only metres away from quaint homes that line Shuswap Lake just east of Salmon Arm were 11 rail cars, most of them dumping their load of coal on the grass and on 75 Avenue Northeast in Canoe.

The black material was tracked up and down the road by emergency and clean up vehicles.

CP Rail spokesman Kevin Hrysak said westbound coal train derailed at 5:30 a.m. Monday. Locomotives remained on the track and there were no injuries.

"This happened at the tail end of the train."

Eleven cars left the tracks, eight of them spewing coal on and around the rail line. One of the trains hit a rail storage shed, which was completely taken apart by crews with heavy machinery within a few hours. Rail cars were smashed and twisted.

The train hit a fire hydrant and crews were on hand to restore water service to residents. That was expected by 4 p.m. Monday.

Janice Ellis and Wes Carlson, who live only 10 metres from the tracks, where they sandwiched between the trains and lake, said they saw CP Rail workers check a section of track immediately in front of their house frequently during the past month.

"They were there every day," Carlson said.

They checked it out themselves several days ago and saw a hockey puck-sized piece of steel missing from one track. They wondered if that caused the accident.

Hrysak said CP Rail won't speculate on the cause, which will be investigated internally as well as by regulatory and safety agencies.

CP said the derailment caused only minimal delays on lines, as the rail company was co-operating with CN Rail to use alternative routes.

"I don't think we'll see any trains for four or five days," Carlson, surveying the trackside wreckage.

Another neighbour, Eko Dance, said he was awoken by a tremendous "bang," which he immediately knew was a train that left the tracks.

Passengers on board a train that connects to Miami International Airport had to exit on the track after three cars derailed.

A MIA Mover train derailed while on its way from the terminal to a car rental center at Miami International Airport Sunday morning. In all, two cars went off the tracks with 12 passengers on board. Two passengers suffered minor injuries

Monday morning the MIA Mover remained out of service.

On Sunday, authorities responded to the scene and evacuated all of the passengers on board. A 7News viewer sent in a photo of a mother and her children being helped out of a car by a police officer.

Two passengers suffered minor injuries as the cars tilted to one side.

The derailment caused delays for some airport passengers who wanted to return rental cars, forcing them to miss their flights. "The entrance into this area was closed down, so you could not return a car," said Alex Saavedra, a passenger who missed his flight. "So we kept riding around, looping, looping around. So I call them, and I said, 'If this continues, how much longer? Do you have a contingency plan?' He wouldn't answer me. He went around and around and then he hung up on me."

The airport bused passengers between the rental center and the terminal, but that resulted in long lines and backaches for travelers. "The problem is more lifting, carrying and dragging the bags," said Fulvia Baldera, who is taking the bus. "This way, we could have gone straight with the bags to the gate."

Airport Officials believe the cause of the derailment was due to a guide wheel issue. "I have been told that there was a guide wheel that came off, and that's the reason that the train tilted to one side," said Marc Henderson, a spokesperson for Miami International Airport.

Crews brought in a crane and worked for hours before managing to remove one of the cars off of the track. It was placed on a flatbed truck and taken away for repairs.

The MIA Mover was seen back up and running by 6 p.m., Monday.

Pan Am Railways is investigating a train derailment in Maine that damaged about 200 feet of track and sent two tanker cars into the Penobscot River.

Four train cars derailed about 7 p.m. Friday along a stretch of Pan Am Railways track that hugs the river in Bucksport. The 31-car train was bringing a delivery to the Verso Paper mill in Bucksport at the time.

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

A portion of Pemiscot County Road 208 was shut down Thursday due to a train derailment, according to the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department. 

Andy Williams with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) says 29 cars of a southbound train with 135 cars derailed around 3 a.m. Thursday.

The train was carrying coal. Three trains have been delayed and rerouted. Williams says traffic will be rerouted until the crash is cleaned up.

Trains Collide in Oklahoma Without Explanation, 3 Missing in Fireball Explosion (June 24) -

Two freight trains collided head-on and exploded into flames on Sunday in Oklahoma, sending billowing black smoke into the air and leaving three Union Pacific employees missing and possibly dead, authorities said.

There was no explanation yet on why the two trains were traveling toward one another on the same track about a mile (1.6 km) east of the panhandle town of Goodwell, in an unpopulated area near the Texas state line.

About 50 volunteer firefighters from five nearby towns had been fighting the fire, which engulfed three locomotives and about 10 rail-cars, since the morning collision but had not been able to extinguish the flames by late afternoon.

“The diesel fuel in those engines just doesn’t want to go out, and the rail cars are all tightly packed,” said Harold Tyson, emergency management director of Texas County, Oklahoma.

One Union Pacific employee escaped injury but three others were missing and possibly dead, Tyson said. A Union Pacific spokeswoman confirmed three crew were reported missing.

Union Pacific coal train derails near Junction City

A Union Pacific coal train, on a run from Colorado to Memphis, TN has derailed near Junction City, KS. Around 5PM Wednesday, 21 coal cars of the 105 car train left the tracks, and some tipped over on their sides. There were no injuries.

Union Pacific Crews will work through the night to clear the tracks and get them open again. Union Pacific Spokesperson Mark Davis estimates that the tracks might be clear and open again in 24 hours.

Mr. Davis could not tell Kansas First News if the coal cars were new or older models. The age of the cars makes a difference in how much coal each car can carry. The loads run anywhere from 75 tons to 100 tons for each coal car.

Mr. Davis also told Kansas First News that the coal on the ground is now called "Dirty Coal" and can not be delivered to an electric company. That coal is piled up on the side of the tracks and a contractor comes in to collect it. Dirty Coal would then be taken and sold to some kind of foundry whose requirements do not include Clean Coal.

A landslide has caused a freight train to derail, blocking the West Highland railway line, following fierce storms and torrential rain.

The 24-wagon train came off the tracks between Corrour and Tulloch just after 7pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said the driver, who was winched to safety and taken to hospital, was badly shaken by the incident but was not injured. No one else was hurt.

Rail services in Scotland have been disrupted after a freight train derailed in the West Highlands last night following a landslide

The driver, who was shaken up but not hurt, had to be winched to safety before being taken to hospital after the incident between Tulloch and Currour

ScotRail's Caledonian sleeper service from Fort William to London Euston, which was due to run overnight, has been cancelled.

The service will remain at Fort William to provide accommodation for passengers. Trains between Crianlarich and Mallaig are also suspended.

Network Rail said the remote location would make it difficult to recover the derailed train and it is not known when services will resume.

Rail services have also been affected on both of the main lines in and out of Scotland because of the weather.

East Coast Trains said it had cancelled all services between Newcastle and Edinburgh following floods in Cumbria and near Newcastle and a landslip near Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Commuter alert: Train derailment closes part of Santa Fe Way

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Eastbound and westbound traffic to and from Santa Fe Way has been shut down between Renfro and Kratzmeyer roads due to a train derailment.

The California Highway Patrol is advising people needing to use Santa Fe Way to get to Shafter to take Rosedale Highway to Highway 43.

Firefighters said the preliminary investigation points to a brake line failure, allowing one segment of the cargo train to buckle up onto segments in front.

No one was injured but cornmeal spilled at the crash point.

Amtrak uses the track for travel to and from Bakersfield. As of Tuesday evening, a spokeswoman said it would affect four trains.

Amtrak train 703 will originate in Wasco, with passengers being bussed from Bakersfield to Wasco.

Trains 716, 718 and 704 will terminate at Wasco and passengers will be bussed from Wasco to Bakersfield.

Train Derails, Hazmat Called To Scene

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Hazmat crews are on the scene of a fire that started when a train with several tankers derailed in north Columbus.

According to Columbus Police, the tankers were possibly carrying sulfur, although that has not been confirmed. The train derailed on the tracks near North Grant Avenue and East 11th Avenue, but it's not clear what caused the train to go off the tracks.

Several roads in the area are closed.

Columbus police and fire remain on scene, and residents in the area are being asked to evacuate.

There are no reported injuries.

Train carrying logs derails north of Talbot; no one injured

Clean-up is expected to take until Friday

TALBOT -- A northbound Portland & Western Railroad train carrying logs derailed Wednesday afternoon at a crossing on Marlatt Road just north of Talbot.

Jefferson Rural Fire Protection District  was dispatched at 5:02 p.m. to respond to the incident after neighbors noticed the accident. They discovered the road completely blocked by spilled logs near the 1300 block of Marlatt Road

A total of eight cars derailed, with several of them completely overturning onto the road and along the track.

There were only two people on the train -- the conductor and the engineer -- and neither were hurt. No cars were stopped at the crossing at the time of the accident, so no other injuries have been reported.

Crews were waiting for nearby power lines to be shut down so they could begin the clean-up, which is expected to take until at least Friday.

Trains collide and derail in Akron

AKRON, Ohio - Crews are cleaning up a train derailment in downtown Akron. The force of the collision pushed three train cars into a nearby parking lot that serves Quaker Square.

According to Akron police, one CSX train rear-ended another near the intersections of Broadway and Mill. It happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

One train was stationary. The other was traveling at around 20 miles per hour at the time.

No vehicle traffic intersections are affected by the derailment. A section of the parking lot at Quaker Square will be closed until the train cars can be removed from the parking lot.

Both trains were empty.

Goods train derails in Bihar, New Delhi-Kolkata route blocked

Mughalsarai: A goods train carrying coal jumped off the track near here tonight, disrupting movement of trains, including Rajdhani Express, on the busy route between New Delhi and Howrah.

Twenty six wagons of the train derailed at a place between Bhagua and Durgawati stations at around 2115 hours but there was no casualty or injury to drivers or guard of the train, Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Mughalsarai Ramesh Chandra said.

The goods train was coming from Dhanbad to Mughalsarai junction.

As the derailed wagons fell on both up and down tracks, the movement of trains on routes between New Delhi and Howrah and New Delhi and Sealdah was severely affected.

Rajdhani Express trains from Howrah and Sealdah, which pass through the area at night, have been diverted via Patna and Gaya, Chandra said.

Trains going from New Delhi to Howrah, Sealdah and Puri have also been asked to take Patna-Gaya routes.

A relief train has been sent to the accident spot from Mughalsarai.

Chandra said efforts are on to clear at least one track so that train movement can be partially resume.

Gazipur train derailment kills one

A youth was killed and at least 20 people including a driver were injured as the engine along with two compartments of a train derailed and plunged into a ditch in Gazipur Sadar upazila on Friday morning.

Railway authorities, witnesses and police said the accident occurred around 9:30pm when the compartments of Sundarban Express from Dhaka veered off the track near the outer signal of Gazipur railway station in Dhirasram area.

Ruhul Amin Helal, 28, of Pabna, died on the spot, reports a correspondent from Gazipur.

Gazipur police, railway police and Gazipur fire brigade and civil defence members rushed to the spot and rescued the victims.

Of the injured, Mojibur Rahman and Indrajit Kuman Sarkar, driver and helper of the train, and passengers Lipi Begum, Asma Aktar, Saiful Islam and Arafat Hossain were admitted to Gazipur Sadar Hospital and different local clinics.

Around 500 metres rail tracks were damaged due to the derailment.

Rail communications on the Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Rajshahi and Dhaka-Khulna routes remained suspended for at least six hours due to the accident.

Ziauddin Sardar, station officer of Joydevpur railway station, said a relief train from Dhaka after a hectic effort managed to drag the derailed engine and compartments from the tracks at around 2:45pm.

Communications Minister Obaidul Kader visited the spot soon after the incident.

The minister formed two separate four-member probe committees to asking them to submit their reports within four and seven days respectively.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Crews were working to re-open the line Sunday night (7/15), following a train derailment in Jefferson County.

Union Pacific officials say it happened around 11:45 a.m., near Old Highway 24 and Thompsonville Road. They say the train with 135 cars loaded with coal, was en route from Wyoming to Kentucky. Seven cars derailed.

No injuries were reported. Union Pacific crews were still working to clear and open the line Sunday night.

Oil worth Tk 53 lakh spills on ground as train derails in Chandpur

Oil worth about Tk 53.46 lakh of the state-owned Jamuna Oil Company Ltd spilled on ground near Chitoshi Railway Station in Chandpur as four tankers of an oil-laden train derailed on Sunday.

Nearly 90 thousand litres of oil spilled on ground as the Chandpur-bound train with 28 oil tankers coming from Chittagong skidded off the track around 5:10pm on Chandpur-Laksham route, report our Chandpur correspondent.

Badrul Alam, deputy manager of Jamuna Oil Company, informed that 17,500 litre of octane, 16,800 litre of kerosene and 46,500 litre of diesel have been spilled on the ground from the four tankers.

The company will investigate into the matter, he added.

Meanwhile, local people with bottles, pots and buckets rushed to the scene to collect oil since Monday morning.

There was no report of casualties in the accident.

Train services resumed at 4:40pm between Chandpur to Laksham and Chandpur to Chittagong and Sylhet after a 24-hour brake.

Tapon Kumar Mitra, station master of Chitoshi Railway Station, informed that rescue trains reached the spot and started operation at around 7:00pm Sunday to salvage all the derailed carriages.

Comilla region railways Assistant Engineer Liyakat Ali told The Daily Star, a 4-member committee led by railways Chittagong Divisional Transport Officer Jakir Hossain has been formed to investigate into the accident.

GLASGOW, Mont. (AP) - A BNSF Railway official says a train headed from Chicago to Portland, Ore., has derailed in a remote part of northeast Montana.

Spokesman Gus Melonas says about a dozen cars of the train derailed Tuesday afternoon about 20 miles east of Glasgow. He says the train had four locomotives and 57 loads of containers with general merchandise.

Crews are assessing damage and whether trains will have to be rerouted. About 30 trains use the route daily, on average.

No injuries were reported.

Train derails east of Glasgow

GLASGOW – There is a 17-car train derailment on the BNSF single-track main rail line 20 miles miles east of Glasgow, BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said in a phone interview Tuesday evening.

A 40-person team has responded to clear the scene, Melonas said. Train traffic is being rerouted through Great Falls and Montana Rail Link line, Melonas said. He said crews are hopeful that the line will be opened sometime Wednesday. The train derailed at 3:41 p.m. Tuesday.

The line handles 30 trains a day.

The train that derailed was an intermodal train made up of four locomotives and 57 cars, according to Melonas.

Some of the cars are stacked up “accordion style,” Melonas said.

No train personnel were injured in the derailment and there does not appear to be a threat to people or the environment, but a hazardous material crew has responded to assess the damage because there were hazardous materials aboard the train, Melonas said.

Train derails with 30 passengers on board after hitting landslide

A train has derailed after hitting ten feet of mud that had washed across the tracks in a landslip in Fife.

Around 30 passengers and two crew members were on board the 2.17pm Newcraighall to Edinburgh service.

The front of two carriages came off the tracks between Rosyth and Dunfermline Town when it hit the landslip behind Pitreavie Industrial Estate in Dunfermline at 4.10pm.

No one was injured and everyone has been kept on board. Another train was dispatched to transfer the passengers, although the disruption is expected to continue, while replacement road transport is also expected to be used while the line remains closed.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: "We are transferring passengers onto another train so that they can complete their journey to Edinburgh."

Meanwhile, all serviced between Inverkeithing and Glenrothes via Dunfermline have been cancelled. Buses are being brought in to operate the route and will be stopping at Rosyth, Dunfermline Town, Dunfermline Queen Margaret, Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Cardenden and Glenrothes with Thornton.

Emergency services attended the derailment to check over passengers and carriages.

A spokeswoman for Fife Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters are in attendance of a train derailment at the back of Pitreavie Industrial Estate. We are currently carrying out checks on the train. So far no casualties have been reported."

At about 7 p.m., Amtrak Cascades 509 train derailed near Woodland, about 18 miles north of Vancouver, Wash., said Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter.

The wheels of the engine lost contact with the rails but the train remained upright and none of its 86 passengers were hurt, Hunter said. Passengers will be given alternate transportation options to arrive at their destinations.

The only train schedule affected is for tonight’s Cascades 509 train, which runs from Seattle to Eugene, Ore. Hunter said.

A shelter-in-place has been lifted as emergency crews from Hardin and Jefferson Counties continue to work to clean up a train derailment in Sour Lake.

The call came into dispatch just after 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. 

The derailment happened along Ataway Road east of FM 326.

The Department of Public Safety says approximately 8 train cars left the track.

A shelter in place was called as crews worked to see what material was in each car and if any hazardous substances were leaking.  The shelter-in-place was lifted once it was determined that no threat existed.

(WIBW/KAKE) -- Railroad crews are working to clean up quite a mess after a train derailed in Saline County and lost part of its load. It happened just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday about six miles west of Salina at the intersection of Highway 140 and Cloud Street.

The Union Pacific train was made up of three engines and 109 cars. It was hauling a large amount of coal.

Officials say approximately 25 cars derailed and dumped their loads of coal. Sparks from the derailment started a small grass fire that burned about two acres. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.

Investigators say the derailment was likely caused by heat. They believe the prolonged triple-digit temperatures caused the tracks to expand and warp.

Crews are working to clean up the pile of coal. Officials say the train happened to separate at the intersection so vehicle traffic in the area has not been affected.

BAVARIA -- An estimated 26 coal cars formed a twisted pyramid of wreckage as a Union Pacific Railroad train derailed Sunday near Bavaria.

The wreck took place about 2:30 p.m. Sunday about six miles west of Salina, along tracks just east of Kansas Highway 140 near the intersection of Muir Road.

The train was eastbound and heading toward Salina when the tracks buckled, said Deputy Eric Appel of the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

Railroad ties were split down the middle, and a series of coal cars separated from the main engine about halfway down the line of more than 100 cars.

As the tracks buckled and split, coal cars plunged to their sides in a wheat field running alongside the tracks, spilling tons of coal and starting a fire in about 30 acres of wheat stubble east of the tracks.

During the wreck, more than a dozen coal cars piled on top of each other, forming a pyramid of twisted steel at the center of the tracks.

In the adjoining wheat field, spilled coal mixed with shattered track and twisted metal and wheels from the cars' undercarriages. Steel bolts shot from both sides of the tracks landed in the field among shattered and split wooden tracks.

Shortly after the coal cars were separated from the main engine, three more coal cars at the end of the first half of the train separated and derailed, collapsing on their sides east of the K-140-Muir intersection.

Firefighters from Saline County Rural Fire District No. 3 responded to the fire. Although the fire was burning along 30 acres, it was contained in about 30 minutes, said Scott Abker, District 3 fire chief.

When firefighters first arrived on the scene, Abker said, it looked like they had their work cut out for them.

"The cars were peeled into each other pretty bad, and there was about a mile of track and railroad scattered around," he said. "We were concerned the tracks were so torn up that we couldn't get across to the field."

But the tracks intersecting Muir Road, although damaged, weren't impassable, Abker said.

"We got enough trucks out there and got a pretty good jump on the fire," he said.

No injuries were reported from the wreck, Appel said.

Union Pacific workers were on the scene but declined to comment as to the possible cause of the wreck. Appel said he was told heat may have been a factor causing the tracks to buckle but the official cause will be under investigation by Union Pacific officials.

Even though there is a mile of debris consisting of collapsed cars, spilled coal and shattered wood and metal, Abker said Union Pacific would be on the scene to take care of the damage in short order.

"They have such a great response team," he said. "They have great equipment and will have these trains off the tracks in no time."

Wreckage from a train derailment in Mt. Airy. The wreck occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.

There were no injuries in a train derailment earlier today in Mt. Airy.

According to Mt. Airy Police Chief Corey Allen, it will take Norfolk Southern crews several days to clean up the area and the public is asked to avoid the area.

The accident happened at approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Dicks Hill Parkway and Sunlit Hollow.

Allen said Dicks Hill Parkway remains closed between Highway 197 and Lake Russell Road as of 9:20 p.m.

"The good news is there were no injuries; nobody's hurt," Allen said. "There was no property damage other than to railroad property."

Initial dispatch calls indicated there could be potential hazardous materials on board but that wasn't the case, he said.

"There was nothing spilled; the worst thing they had on there was peanut oil," Allen said.

One freight car landed on a Norfolk Southern-owned propane tank located adjacent to the track. Precautions were taken, and according to Allen, there is no danger to homes nearby.

"Luckily, it just rolled it over," he said. He said crews remain on scene working to clear the area.

Train derailment causes explosions In Eastern Montana town

A train derailment 2 miles west of the small town of Plevna, Montana has caused several explosions and has kept emergency crews busy throughout Sunday in Fallon County.

Fallon County Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Chuck Lee says around 3p.m. on Sunday, eight cars from a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed-causing multiple explosions.

The rail company did respond to the scene along with Fallon County and several emergency crews from across the region to battle several wildfires which sparked from the explosions.

It is believed the explosions are being caused by denatured alcohol, which was one of the cargo items from the derailed cars.

Currently, no evacuation orders have been issued for Plevna or the nearby town of Baker, but people are asked to stay one-half mile away from the train line.

Highway 12 has been blocked off at either end of the derailment as a precautionary measure.

Lee says the plan for now is to allow the fire to burn itself out before clean-up can begin.

Crews will remain at the site for the remainder of the evening

Train derailment causes evacuations, hazmat response

Police closed roads, and residents took to the streets when a train derailed in Cramerton Monday around 4:29 p.m.

Despite evacuations of several blocks due to the possibility of a hazardous chemical spill, people living right down from the wreckage stood in the street, taking pictures and talking about the derailment.

A slew of emergency workers flocked to the scene, setting up a command post within sight of the snarled freight cars at 278 Eighth Ave.

A secondary command center was put in place in the parking lot of Food Lion on Market Street in Cramerton.

Only a portion of the Norfolk Southern train lay overturned and twisted, several hundred feet away from the remainder of the train that sat upright on the tracks.

Emergency crews suited up in emergency gear just in case material on the wrecked train cars proved to be hazardous.

No one was injured in the incident.

“We’re erring on the side of caution,” Maj. Clyde Cantrell with Gaston County Emergency Medical Services said shortly after the investigation began.

Residents in several blocks of Eighth Avenue and Mayflower Street were evacuated from their homes. The railroad track lies between those two parallel streets.

Joey Clinton, who lives nearby on Washington Street, said he didn’t know what had happened when the train left its tracks.

Clinton was outside mowing his lawn when he saw a spray of gravel and smoke. He walked near the track to check it out and saw the wreckage.

Steve Lingerfelt and his brother-in-law, Larry Rick, heard a commotion but didn’t know what had happened until they saw it on the news.

The two Cramerton men live next door to each other on Woodlawn Avenue. Rick, who has lived in the same area since childhood, said the incident reminded him of a serious derailment in the 1950s.

Rick said that time chemicals flowed down the street following the derailment.

“I was just a young boy back then, but I can still remember,” said Rick.

While some Mayflower Street residents were told to seek shelter at First Baptist Church on 10th Street, others brought out lawn chairs, cameras, dogs and children to watch police, fire and medical workers look over the damage.

The evacuation ended just before 7 p.m.

There were three locomotives and 121 cars. At least 12 cars derailed and 10 of them were tanker cars, according to The Gazette’s news partner, WSOC-TV. There were four tanker cars containing LP gas (liquid petroleum) among the derailed, but no leaking was detected. WSOC-TV reported that one of the wrecked tanker cars had a large gash that was visible from the station’s helicopter.

Rick was among the spectators along Mayflower Street and said he was glad the incident didn’t seem too serious.

“I don’t know what was in those cars, but I think we’re very fortunate,” he said.

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Officials were on the scene of a possible hazmat situation after several train cars derailed.

It happened on the train tracks just west of I-15 by Lamb Boulevard and Ann Road.

Officials said two cars derailed from the tracks and were toppled on their sides.

They had set up a perimeter around the area for a few hours because they were concerned that a hazardous chemical had been leaking.

Once it was determined the material wasn't hazardous, they re-opened Lamb.

No word on what caused the derailment.

There were no injuries reported.

Gaibandha, Aug 13 (bdnews24.com) — At least 25 people were injured on Monday as four compartments of a Shantahar-bound local train derailed in Gaibandha.

Gaibandha Rail Station Master Abdul Wahed said the mid compartments of the local train number 484 derailed around 10am before entering Gaibandha station. The driver stopped the train hearing screams of the passengers.

He said at least 25 people were injured as some of them jumped from the train and some others received injuries in stampede.

The station master said rail communication remained snapped in the Lalmonirhat-Shantahar and Dinajpur-Shantahar route after the accident and adding that a rescue engine from the Bonarpara Junction had reached the spot.

Assistant Station Master of Gaibandha Rail Station Abul Kashem, said that the accident might have been caused due to the damaged slippers of the rail tracks.

Wahed said four of the injured had been admitted to Gaibandha Adhunik Hospital.

Train derails near Yaamba

A FREIGHT driver and his co-driver tested negative when they were checked for alcohol after the train they were driving derailed yesterday, 5kms from Yaamba, north of Rockhampton.

The train was north bound when it crashed at Milman.

No one was injured and there were no other passengers or people involved in the accident.

North Rockhampton Police Sergeant Peter Harding said it wasn't yet known how the train came off its tracks.

"The incident occurred well clear of road traffic so there was no endangerment of any cars or trucks," he said.

"There was no hazardous material on board, just general freight."

It happened early Wednesday morning.

An official with the Miami County Emergency Management office says about 22 train cars full of grain jumped the tracks.

No one was hurt.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the accident.

A train derailment in a railroad yard in northeast Houston caused headaches for rail crews Wednesday morning.

The mishap occurred in the Union Pacific rail yard near Kirkpatrick, about 12:45 a.m., said Raquel Espinoza, a Union Pacific spokeswoman.

Espinoza said no injuries were reported and no hazardous material leaked. Kirkpatrick was temporarily closed as crews cleared the area.

Crews were building a train when seven cars jumped the track, Espinoza said. At least three of the cars toppled over onto their sides. The cars were empty. It was unclear what caused the mishap.

Crews worked to put the cars back on the track and clear the site.

Six people were hurt in Berlin when a train came off the tracks at lunchtime on Tuesday.

Around 150 emergency workers raced to the spot in northern Berlin where the S25 suburban train had come off the tracks. Two carriages were completely off the rails at the accident site between the Tegel and Schulzendorf stations.

Around 50 people were in the train at the time of the accident, which happened just before midday. Those who were hurt had mostly suffered bruising as their carriage fell sideways and they were thrown around inside.

The train was yesterday left where it came to a halt while engineers tried to work out what had caused the accident.

Union Pacific Train Derails in St. Paul

A Union Pacific train traveling from Chicago to the Twin Cities derailed in St. Paul Saturday.

St. Paul Police say the train was on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe track and derailed under the Seventh Street Bridge near Interstate 94 around 1:30 p.m. The train had 114 cars, and five of them derailed in the upright position, according to Mark Davis of Union Pacific Railroad.

There were no hazardous materials in any of the train cars, and no injuries have been reported.

Crews will work through the night to clean up the incident and repair any damage to the tracks. The cause is still under investigation.

An early morning train carrying about 100 passengers has derailed in west Cumbria after a landslide near St Bees.

Emergency services were continuing to deal with the two-carriage train, which was travelling towards Sellafield nuclear plant.

Passengers included employees on their way to work at Sellafield and officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary were at the scene.

No injuries were reported and, although the train left the tracks, it remained upright.

A second train sent to the scene to transport the stranded passengers to Sellafield left at 10.25am, but it too encountered a landslide and had to return to Nethertown. Passengers will now be escorted to the nearest road for their onward journey.

Network Rail said the derailment, about a mile south of St Bees station, happened in a remote area with no easy road access. Emergency services plan to remove rubble, put the train back on the rails, examine the track for damage and carry out repairs. It is likely the line will be closed for the rest of the day.

Network Rail said: "Following a landslip on to the railway near St Bees, buses are replacing trains between Whitehaven and Sellafield. Approximately 100 passengers have been removed from a train which ran into the landslip at 6.45am, derailing the front set of wheels."

Cumbria police said earlier: "At this time, no injuries have been reported, and police, along with officers from the British Transport Police, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and other emergency services are in attendance. Traffic is asked to avoid the area whilst emergency vehicles are travelling to the scene."

A night of heavy rain severely affected the west of the UK. Police and fire crews reported cars partially submerged in the Egremont area of Cumbria.

About 20 elderly residents were moved to an emergency shelter at Egremont market hall after a power cut.

Cumbria fire service said it received more than 100 calls for help, mainly involving requests for sandbags. Forecasters said the rain was easing.

However, Cumbria police were concerned about an unstable bridge at Beckermet, near Egremont. The bridge, next to the White Mare pub, was closed while its safety was assessed. The pub was flooded and staff were trying to pump the water out on Thursday morning. One worker said: "We are literally swamped. It's all hands on deck here at the moment."

A spokesman for Cumbria fire service said that up to 150 houses in the Egremont area had been affected.

He said: "I don't have exact numbers but some people have had to be evacuated and many have made their own way out of their flooded houses.

"Cumbria county council's emergency planning team have been setting up some emergency accommodation for people. I know that roads around St Bees have been affected by the landslide there.

"We had in excess of 100 calls related to the flooding in a period of just two hours overnight. I know that this morning things are now calming down as far as the flooding goes. We have a number of fire engines at the scene of the train derailment but there are no rescues to be made."

Cumbria police said drains were unable to cope after the river Ehen and several becks in the Egremont area burst their banks.

Emma Jane Taylor said floodwater began entering her St Bees home shortly before midnight. She said: "We've had heavy rain here before, but it's never been this bad before.

"I alerted some neighbours, but within 30 minutes it was through my front door and coming up through my floorboards.

"It's lifted the block paving from my grandmother's house nearby and was also coming through her french windows. At the moment you can paddle across my floor. We just hope the rain doesn't come back because the drains are full to the top and wouldn't be able to take any more."

Wasdale mountain rescue volunteers helped the fire service to pump out several properties in the Egremont area.

Earlier this week the rear of a four-storey house in Egremont collapsed into the river Ehen after heavy rain.
