In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents. |

Train car derails in Phoenix, spilling 600 gallons of diesel fuel
PHOENIX — Fire officials say a single car on a freight train derailed in Phoenix and spilled about 600 gallons of diesel fuel.
The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/vofEbX ) that a hazardous material crew was sent to the accident site of Jackson and 20th streets about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Jorge Enriquez says the fuel has been contained and no one was injured.

No one was injured but the incident raises new questions about the safety of plans to use the locomotives, which carry diesel fuel, in the train tunnel under Mount Royal.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, a federal agency that investigates rail accidents, has sent an investigator to look into the Central Station incident, said spokesperson Chris Krepski.
On Friday, the 1,400 commuters on the Mont St. Hilaire train that derailed just before 8 a.m. felt the train suddenly stop but passengers were able to disembark normally, said Martine Rouette, a spokesperson for the Agence métropolitaine de transport.
The locomotive went off the tracks. It was pulling nine double-decker Bombardier train cars, one of which also went off the rails, Rouette said.
The AMT, Montreal's commuter train authority, and Canadian National, which owns the tracks, are investigating.
She said the cause of the incident is unclear.
The locomotive in question is an ALP-45 DP, which Bombardier bills as a "North American first." It is dual-powered, meaning it can switch mid-trip between diesel and electric power.
Only two agencies have ordered them - the AMT and New Jersey Transit. Two locomotives have been delivered to the AMT, only one of which is in service, said Bombardier spokesperson Marc Laforge. New Jersey received some but none are in service; they are still being tested.
Laforge said he did not know of other cases where the locomotives derailed.
The AMT ordered 20 of the locomotives in 2009. The cost: $236 million. With extra charges, including tariffs (they are built in Germany), the price tag will be $308 million.
Opened in 1918, the Mount Royal tunnel, owned by CN, runs between Town of Mount Royal and Montreal's Central Station. For most of its history, only electric trains have travelled through the tunnel.
The AMT is to begin running the new locomotives, carrying significant amounts of diesel, through the tunnel in 2013, when it launches a new Mascouche train. It is to run on diesel until it reaches the tunnel. At that point, it will switch to electric but will still be carrying diesel fuel.
Avrom Shtern, a transit activist who first raised concerns about diesel trains in the tunnel in 2009, said the derailment raises alarm bells.
"Even if it's not related to the locomotive, just imagine what would have happened if it was in the tunnel and another train was passing on the other track," he said. He said the risk of fire is too high, noting the tunnel does not feature any escape routes.
The Projet Montréal party and the Montreal firefighters' union have said they are concerned about potential accidents. The Parti Québécois has demanded escape exits be built.
AMT president Joël Gauthier insists the tunnel can safely accommodate the locomotives, which carry up to 6,800 litres of diesel. He says escape exits are not needed.

Train derailment forces detours in Montchanin: A train derailment is forcing traffic detours in the Montchanin area. Montchanin Road (Del. 100) was closed about two hours but has been reopened, DelDOT says.
Four cars of a freight train jumped the tracks Friday afternoon, snarling traffic at Del. 100 and Rockland Road in Montchanin but causing no injuries.
Montchanin Road (Del. 100) was closed for about two hours after the accident, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. just behind the old Montchanin train station. Rockland and Kirk roads remained blocked near the tracks.
Railroad and emergency officials weren't sure what caused the derailment.
One tank car had about 27,000 gallons of butane in it, but no leaks were detected, and many other cars were empty. At least one empty car had some damage, according to Al Sauer, vice president of East Penn Railroad, of Kennett Square, Pa., which operates several short lines in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
The train was moving at about 10 mph when the incident occurred, Sauer said.
Officials planned to decouple the cars from the 20-car train, removing the unaffected cars with a locomotive sent to the scene from Pennsylvania. Then, they planned to work to get the derailed cars back on track -- possibly with a crane.
"They may have to fix a little section of track, too," said Talleyville Fire Company Chief Tom Looney.
No environmental hazard was expected, according to Jamie Bethard of the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
"It may be a little noisy around here for a while, though," he said. "It's not all going to happen tonight, either."

CHARLES CITY — Thirteen cars of a Canadian Pacific train derailed just before 1 p.m. Saturday at Charles City.
Cars were carrying soybeans and scrap metal. There were no injuries.
They came off the track at a length of southbound rail, just off the Avenue of the Saints near Highway 14, according to Ed Greenberg, a spokesman for the railroad.
Cause of the derailment is under investigation, he said.
“It would be premature to speculate on a cause as we begin an extensive investigation into what happened,” Greenberg said.
He added the railroad’s concern is to conduct “an appropriate response” that includes not only cleaning up the derailed cars and spillage, but to make sure there was no adverse environmental impact.
He said each derailment case is different and he could not guess at how long that process would take.
“It just all depends on the incident,” he said.
The train was bound for Marquette, Iowa.
“We have rerouting options” for rail traffic, he said, so that is not a concern, he said.

13 train cars derail in Iowa; no injuries reported
CHARLES CITY, Iowa -- Investigators are trying to determine what caused 13 train cars to derail in Iowa.
The Mason City Globe Gazette ( http://bit.ly/rzy7AQ) reports the derailment happened just before 1 p.m. Saturday in Charles City in northeast Iowa. No injuries were reported.
The cars of the Canadian Pacific train were carrying soybeans and scrap metal when they toppled off the tracks at a stretch near state Highway 14. The train was bound for the northeast Iowa town of Marquette.
Railroad spokesman Ed Greenberg says an extensive investigation is being started to determine what caused the derailment. He says the railroad is also conducting "an appropriate response" that includes cleaning up the derailed cars.

Vijayawada (AP), Dec 21 (PTI) A goods train derailed near Gannavaram on Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam route early this morning in what officials suspect to be an act of sabotage. The train carrying fertilisers was on its way from Visakhapatnam to Palavedu when its engine jumped the tracks at around 2.25 am, South Central Railway (SCR) officials said. The derailed engine was removed and the tracks were restored by 6.30 am, the officials said. An inspection of the mishap site revealed that some fishplates had been removed and iron plates kept on the tracks, they said. Local train derails in Mumbai, services hit
MUMBAI: A Kalyan-bound local train derailed near the Masjid station here this morning, disrupting rail traffic on the suburban section of Central Railway.
The train, which had started from the CST station, was approaching the Masjid station, when the sixth bogie (from the engine) derailed, railway sources said.
Efforts are on to restore the traffic, they added. The incident occurred in the morning rush hour, inconveniencing thousands of commuters. No casualty was reported, sources said.

Two injured after train derails in cyclone flooding

Two men have been injured after they were trapped in a freight train that was swept off a bridge near Katherine, south of Darwin.
The train derailed near the Edith Falls River Crossing in floodwaters caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant.
Heavy rain from the system, which is now a tropical low, has brought heavy rain and isolated flooding to the Northern Territory, cutting sections of the Stuart Highway.
Police say the train's driver and co-driver have been rescued by emergency workers and are being taken to the Katherine District Hospital to be assessed.
Earlier, a CareFlight helicopter attempted to rescue the men, but had to return to Darwin because it was unable to land in the wet conditions.
The Member for Katherine, Willem Westra Van Holthe, says the Edith River Bridge has collapsed and carriages are floating downstream.
"It's what I'd describe as a scene of devastation here," he said.
"Apart from the enormous amount of water flowing across the road, there's sheets of bitumen that have been lifted off and carried away and also it appears as though the train tried to get across this morning while the river has flooded.
"The train bridge appears to have collapsed."
Pair swept away
NT police have also rescued two people who were swept from their car in the flooding.
A man and a woman were swept off the roof of their car on the Edith River Bridge after it aquaplaned and stalled about 2am.
They were able to cling to a tree about 50 metres downstream and were rescued a short time later.
A flood warning is in effect for some low-lying parts of Katherine.
There are road closures at the Edith River Bridge Crossing and the Cullen River Crossing in the Pine Creek and Douglas Daly region.
NT Police spokesman Tony Deutrom says officers in the area have been monitoring the situation.
"From Pine Creek south we've got police on-site and have been in and out through the night," he said.
"In Katherine up to Edith Bridge, had emergency services out during the night as well.
"The Katherine emergency operations centre's been activated overnight."

Two coaches of an army freight train were derailed on Saturday between Karjoda and Palanpur railway stations of Gujarat, affecting traffic on the Palanpur-Ahmadabad route, railway officials said.
Trains including Haridwar-Ahmedabad, Jammu Tavi-Ahmedabad and Ajmer-Bangalore were delayed by two to three hours, they said, adding there were no injuries in the incident.
According to officials, the incident took place when two coaches adjacent to the engine of the train derailed blocking the railway tracks.
There has been no major damage, Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector, Abu Road station, B P Saini said, denying possibility of sabotage.
The Army personnel traveling with the train refused to divulge the destination and contents of the goods the train was carrying citing security reasons.
A technical team that was rushed from Abu Road attributed the derailment to repair work on the main railway line.
The wagons were put on the track after over four hours of work and the train resumed its journey.

One compartment of the Eastern Central railway G M special train derailed near Phusro railway station on Thursday night. However, no one was injured in the incident.
Derailment of a G M Special train and blockade of a track by passengers upset over delay in running a local trains and Saktipunj both the up and down express lead to disruption of train services between Gomoh -Barkakana and Dhanbad -Barkakana in Dhanbad division on Thursday.
According to reports, the last compartment of the G.M special train derailed as the train just left Amlo block halt at 7:30pm. The derailment occurred when the train was changing tracks a few meters away from the Phusro station. All senior officials of Dhanbad railway division, rushed to the spot almost immediately after the incident.
As the derailment was not of serious nature, the special trains left for its destination about two hours leaving the derailed compartment behind .The tracks were also cleared within two hours. When contacted, DRM Sudhir Kumar told The Pioneer that there seemed to be no foul play but reason for the derailment was yet to be ascertained. He said the tracks were found to be proper condition.
An inquiry committee has been constituted to ascertain the reason behind the accident, the railway sources said. On Thursday evening Eastern Central railway General Manager Barun Bharthuyar along with DRM, Dhanbad Sudhir Kumar and other top officials of DRM office were coming back Dhanbad from Daltanoganj after official inspection. When special train reached near Phusro station its last compartment got derailed. Long distance trains including UP and DN Howrah -Jabalpur Saktipunj, were held up at Gomia and Chanderpura stations .The Gomoh bound UP and DN passengers were detained at Bokaro Thermal and Bhandaridih stations.

A senior official said, "There is no evidence to identify any particular fault and the detailed inquiry is being conducted by the commissioner of railway safety (CRS). We can speculate on unit-related failure because the derailment happened after five coaches passed the accident spot. There was no visible damage to the track. But the tongue rail, the part on the tracks that helps a train cross from one line to another, suffered damages as the derailed wheels were dragged ahead while the train was in motion."
Another theory is that the train wheels touched the fish-plate, a metal bar bolted at the ends of two rails to join them together in a track. A senior official said, "This can happen only if either the track or the wheel has got eroded. Another option is to remove the fishplate at the yard. We can try out continuous or long-welded rail method in which the lengths of the rail are welded to join them together in a track."

The train that derailed near Isipingo after a car landed on the tracks.
A Durban motorist being chased by metro police crashed off a bridge and landed on the train tracks below, causing an oncoming train to derail.
The driver managed to escape from the car before the train ploughed into it.
Twenty-one people were injured, one of them seriously, in the incident near Isipingo yesterday afternoon.
Metro police spokesman Eugene Msomi said the police had wanted to pull over the car because the driver was acting suspiciously.
“The traffic officers tried to stop the car but the man drove past. The officers gave chase and called for back-up. We suspect that the car may be stolen or hijacked,” he said.
Metro police said the driver failed to negotiate a bend and crashed through a bridge and landed on the railway line.
A Metrorail train then hit the car and left the tracks.
The Passenger Rail Agency of SA said two coaches had derailed and serious damage had been caused to infrastructure.
ER24 paramedics spokesman Derrick Banks said the car was found wedged between one of the coaches and the wall of the bridge.
Paramedics found the injured passengers sitting on the railway line near the train. They were taken to local hospitals.

Rail line to Italy reopens after derailment
The Simplon rail line is now open again after a Swiss freight train derailed yesterday near Domodossola, Italy.
Trains from Geneva to Milan should run again as normal, as well as regional traffic from Brig in the Upper Valais across the Italian border.
Crews cleared one track last night allowing some traffic through, but trains were not running normally until this morning
No one was injured in the incident. The cause of the accident has not been announced.

BOKARO: East Central Railway (ECR) general manager Varun Varthuar and 20 other officials had a narrow escape when the special train in which they were travelling to Dhanbad was derailed near the outer signalling cabin before Phusro station on Thursday night. No one was injured.

A Kalyan-bound local train derailed from its tracks at 8.42 am yesterday, throwing train services awry and inconveniencing thousands of passengers. While some had to undertake hazardous treks on the tracks back to stations, others were stranded in halted trains, or at stations waiting for delayed trains.

The train started out from platform number 7 of CST, and deviated from the rails even as it was rolling out of the platform. Sources claim that the reason for the derailment could have been a problem in a coach. Owing to the snag, the train failed to navigate a steep curve, causing part of the coach to tilt at an angle of 45 degrees from the track.
"A detailed enquiry will be conducted. Prima facie, it seems there was some problem with the coach, and not with the track," said a senior Central Railway official on condition of anonymity.
Sources have revealed that the derailment occurred owing to a mismatch between the pace of the underlying frame of the train and its wheels, which displaced the coach completely. The train was moving at a speed of 15 km per hour, with only four commuters sitting inside the coach that was derailed.
Other officials claimed that the derailment might have resulted from lack of maintenance.
Commissioner of Railway Safety Chetan Bakshi paid a visit to the spot soon after the incident, and promised that he would conduct an inquiry. Due to the derailment, the train was dragged for a distance of nearly 50 metres along the track before it came to a halt.
Services disrupted
The derailment threw train schedules awry throughout the day. Some 120 services had to be cancelled, and trains moving towards CST and Kalyan ran late by an hour.
Sangita Holkar, an inconvenienced commuter said, "I somehow managed to catch a train from Thane. But the train was cancelled at Kurla. I waited for nearly half an hour to board another train. It took 45 minutes for the train to reach Dadar from Kurla."
Commuters who boarded CST-bound trains from Kalyan in the early morning hours took nearly three hours to reach their destination.
The mishap also disrupted the departure of the long-distance Mumbai-Kolhapur Koyna Express. The train, which was waiting to depart from a platform in the station at the time of the mishap, was eventually cancelled.
Prabhakar Rankhambe, who boarded the train with his family, said, "We came to Mumbai to attend a family function, and were supposed to leave for Kolhapur this morning. We heard repeated announcements that the train would depart soon, but were kept waiting. Only at 1:30 pm was it announced that the Koyna Express was cancelled."
Meanwhile, the fast trains moving towards CST had to be diverted at Byculla. Most trains ran 15-20 minutes late all day.
Though the accident did not claim any lives, Buddhiram (42), a commuter panicked and jumped out of the derailed train, sustaining some minor injuries. "He twisted his ankle and has been admitted to the Railway Hospital in Byculla," said Rahul Jain, divisional railway manager, Central Railway.

Two train drivers, whose freight train was flushed off a bridge across a flooded Northern Territory river are recovering in Kathrine District Hospital.
The train was washed off the tracks by floodwaters between Katherine and Pine Creek this morning.
Northern Territory police say the injured drivers managed to walk out of the train and were assessed by officers at the site of the accident, and have since been taken to hospital.
The ABC has reported some of the carriages washed of the tracks and bridge carried chemicals, although they are not expected to pose a hazzard to people.
The torrential rain from ex-tropical Cyclone Grant is causing flooding in parts of the Northern Territory, stranding motorists on the main road out of Darwin and has caused the Cullen, Ferguson and Edith Rivers to swell to dangerous levels and flooding several roadways.

Cyclone Grant leaves Ghan train carrying 200 stranded
The scene of a freight train derailment that left one train driver injured and another trapped after Cyclone Grant caused flash flooding.
PASSENGERS travelling on the Ghan became stuck in Katherine after a freight train derailed in flooding chaos.
Great Southern Rail spokeswoman Jessica Playford confirmed the Ghan, which was travelling with almost 200 passengers, was scheduled to reach Darwin this evening, reported the ntnews.com.au.
Ms Playford said they hoped to get the passengers into Darwin by coach tonight.
"Depending on what happens with the track and the roads - hopefully the roads will be open later today,'' she said.
Eyewitnesses at the scene of the iron ore train derailment - just north of Edith Falls River crossing - say the track has been badly damaged.
There are also reports that some of the train's carriages were washed by the flood waters into the car bridge down stream, and damaged that.
Ms Playford said there were already coaches organised to take the passengers from Katherine to Darwin.
The Ghan is also scheduled to leave Darwin for Adelaide tomorrow morning.
Ms Playford estimates just under 200 are booked for that journey as well.
Earlier today a train driver who sustained back injuries in this morning's derailment was flown to Katherine.
His co-driver was also rescued from the crash scene.

Derailment closes CPR line near Golden, B.C.
CALGARY — Railway operators are investigating after a train derailed west of Golden B.C. this morning.
CPR officials said Tuesday that about 25 cars from a westbound train carrying grain derailed 16 km west of Golden shortly before 10 a.m.
No injuries were reported and CPR said there are no environmental concerns associated with the incident.
“We have operations people on the scene assessing the situation,” said CPR spokesman Kevin Hrysak who said the cause of the derailment has yet to be determined.
CPR operators will have to complete their assessment before the company will be able to reopen the line, Hrysak said.
“Obviously safety is our top priority and we’re taking all necessary precautions,” Hrysak said.
The train had more than 100 cars in total and was bound for Vancouver.

THAI TRAIN DERAILS, KILLING 1, 120 injured
Bangkok - A train derailed Wednesday after smashing into a pickup at a crossing in southern Thailand, killing at least one woman and injuring 120 people, media reports said.

Empty rail cars derail Monday
A five-car train derailment near Birdseye Monday afternoon remains under investigation, according to officials.
Lynda Frost with Montana Rail Link said no injuries were reported and all the cars were empty at the time. The derailment occurred around 3 p.m.
Frost said the cars were the fourth through eighth cars in the train. One was an empty tank and the other four were flat-bed cars.
Crews were working Tuesday to lift the cars, she added.

Scanner reports indicate a train has derailed near the Dresser Rand facility in Painted Post.
The reports came in at approximately 6:40 p.m.
Though some of the rail cars apparently contained LP gas, there was no indication of fire or a gas leak.
Leader staff on the scene say the derailment is minor, though traffic in the village has been disrupted by the stopped train.

Officials say six train cars carrying propane came off the tracks while the train was in transport through the Dresser Rand Operations property. But none of the cars tipped over, and air tests by firefighters and railroad officials showed no leaks or spills.
Local law enforcement did reroute traffic patterns in portions of the village until the train could be moved safely to another location. A railroad contractor was called in to get the cars back on the tracks.
Officials at the scene including police and fire departments from Painted Post, New York State Police, Steuben County Sheriff's Office, and the Steuben County's Office of Emergency Services.

Ambala, Jan 5 (PTI) Four wagons of a goods train today derailed near the Ambala Cantt railway station here affecting movement of trains, officials said. The goods train laden with coal was proceeding to Bathinda in Punjab when suddenly its wagons came off the track this morning. Among the trains which were held up for over an hour included New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express. The traffic had been restored and the derailed coaches had been put back on the track, Divisional Railways Manager, Northern Railways, Ambala, P K Sanghi said.

PAINTED POST — A train derailed around 6:30 p.m. at the Dresser Rand plant in Painted Post, but there were no injuries, according to a rail line spokesman.
Dave Pidgeon, manager of public relations for Norfolk Southern, said six cars of a 74-car B&H train derailed.
They were on a B&H track that is maintained by Norfolk Southern, he said.
Pidgeon said the cars were leaning Wednesday night but were not leaking.
Three of the six cars were loaded with propane. Two were empty, but had held propane and one was filled with sand, Pidgeon said.
Pidgeon said he was told that first responders ordered an evacuation of the area shortly after the derailment, but he had no further information.
The derailment affected traffic in Painted Post.
Steuben County Sheriff's deputies were sent to assist Painted Post Village Police at the scene. No further information was available.
Norfolk Southern was in the news in November when a rail car derailed and overturned, landing partly in the Hilliard Corp. parking lot in Elmira.
City officials were angry that Norfolk Southern failed to notify them of the derailment.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., got involved and arranged a meeting with his staff, Norfolk Southern, the state Department of Transportation and city officials.
After the meeting, Schumer said he was optimistic that the notification process would improve.
Pidgeon said at the time that Norfolk Southern is committee to improving communication and will continue to make safety a top priority.

Goods train derails, delays trains by hours
The derailment of a goods train near the Ambala Cantonment station led to disruption in train services. Some trains had to be diverted and the arrival at the Chandigarh Railway Station was delayed. The Kalka Shatabdi arrived four hours late.
Four wagons of a goods train carrying coal, proceeding towards Bathinda, were derailed in the morning. This led to train schedule disruption. The trains along the routes were stalled and the Kalka Shatabdi, which arrives from New Delhi in the morning, was diverted via Sirhind.
The harried passengers were stranded for around an hour before the train was diverted to an alternate route. While the train was scheduled to arrive in Chandigarh at around 11.30 am it finally arrived at around 3.30 pm. Another train that was diverted from Sirhind was the Paschim Express.
The trains were already being delayed due the heavy fog that has been experienced over the past few days.

A SEVEN wagon Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) train has derailed in Kabwe in Natuseko township, blocking traffic.
Some residents interviewed said the accident could have been caused by continued vandalism which is rampant at the spot as well as failure by the company to take remedial measures.
The accident happened on Saturday afternoon and the wagons are believed to be carrying manganese but by yesterday RSZ had not removed the derailed wagons.
RSZ Chief Executive Benjamin Even when contacted for a comment could neither confirm or deny but asked for a written query to which he did not respond by Press time.
Central Province Minister Philip Kosamu who visited the accident scene challenged RSZ to urgently clear the accident scene.
He was disappointed with poor workmanship at the site saying it was an indication that the company was failing to operate efficiently.

Station master, KP Singh confirmed the accident and reported, "The Bramhaputra Mail rammed into the stationary goods train. Rescue and relief team has rushed to the spot." The stationary goods-train was sidelined last night due to engine malfunction. The bogies of the train are being said to slide to cause the tragedy.
Samir Goswami, spokesperson for eastern railway said,"Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each of the persons killed." Rescue operations are under effect for the derailed boogie as causalities are feared to rise by the hour. Howeve, he also said that people have been rescued and only five of them were mildly injured.
For the moment, two rescue trains have been sprinted to support recue-op. The inquiry has been set and it is yet to confirm the reason as to why it happened.

Coal cars derailed near hwy 16 None injured, no water spoiled: CN
Travellers riding VIA’s passenger train had to be bussed from Smithers to Prince George just days before Christmas when tracks were blocked from a derailment. 18 fully-loaded coal cars had jumped the tracks just east of Vanderhoof, CN reported.
No one was injured but several other freight trains were delayed and coal was spilled, however not into any bodies of water, a CN spokesperson confirmed.
Crews had the tracks cleared and carrying trains again by early the next morning.

GIBSON CITY -- Illinois 9 will remain closed near Gibson City as workers prepare to right two train tankers filled with ethanol.
The train cars, which remain upright, "dug in" to the ground after track broke, said Mayor Dan Dickey. "There is no danger right now," Dickey told The Pantagraph.
"Everybody is working together," he said. "It's not a hazmat situation but the potential is there. We're monitoring, watching."
Illinois 9 is closed from Illinois 47 to Township Road 300. A detour is marked and township crews will keep the roads plowed.
Crews are expected to have the cars reset by midnight.

Train Derailment Halts Midland County Road
MIDLAND COUNTY - On Thursday morning, Midland County businesses at County Roads 1285 and 127 were getting work done just like every other day.
Until just after 9 a.m., when five rail cars found themselves off the rails and on the road.
"They were loaded at the chemical facility. Union Pacific was taking those cars out to the main railroad line. In the process, these cars came off the tracks and sat down upright right beside the rails," Midland Assistant Fire Marshal, David Hickman, said.
The derailment closed down parts of County Road 127 and Midland County fire units and law enforcement were on scene to ensure public safety.
Suddenly every nearby residence and business was put on standby evacuation.
"Basically it's evacuation. We would assemble at a specified area, make sure we have a head count and then everybody would be removed from the property," President of West Texas Drum Company, Charles Ridge, said.
The derailment put the brakes on some local businesses.
Several told NewsWest 9, they lost valuable shipments and deliveries.
Others said they had to rush their work in case the evacuation signal went off.
Nearby Midessa Oil Patch RV Park warned the occupants of all 133 of their mobile homes, cabins and tents that the call to get out could come at anytime.
There were no injuries during the derailment but the greatest danger lied inside of the tanks.
Chemicals called methanol, xylene and ethylene glycol, all of them are dangerous to inhale and flammable.
"It is ignitable," Ridge said. "If we were to have a flash of flame, it would certainly ignite and create a nice combustion."
Thankfully, all cars remained upright and had no leaks, so no evacuations were called for.
Nexeo Solutions, a chemical business on County Road 127, were the movers of the cars.
Nexeo arrived on scene to take care of the chemicals.
"They're going to unload them and then they're going to bring out some boom equipment to pick these cars up and put them directly back on the line again," Hickman said.
Crews will continue to work long into the night to make sure this derailment stays a safe accident and that each car gets back on the right track.

DR Congo train derailment leaves 14 dead

KINSHASA - A cargo train belonging to the Congo National Railway Company (SNCC) derailed on Sunday in the central west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), leaving 14 people dead and many others injured.
The accident occurred at the Bukaka railway station. The train was coming from Ilebo, 25 km away, to Kananga in Kasai-Occidental province.
According to survivors, the number of victims could increase because other bodies were still trapped in the four wagons that overturned killing the 14 people instantly.
The survivors said the cargo train was carrying passengers who wanted to move together with their goods which they were transporting to the market.
The exact number of these passengers remains unknown, before an official report on the incident.
Train accidents are frequent in DR Congo because of the poor state of the locomotives and the dilapidated state of the railway line, which was constructed during the colonial period and has never been repaired since the Central African country obtained independence in 1960.
The SNCC has most trains operating in DR Congo, with its network running through the central west, northeast, southeast and east.
The company operates in seven provinces including Kasai- Occidental, Kasai-Oriental, Katanga, South Kivu, Maniema, North Kivu and Orientale.

Eleven wagons of goods train derail in Bihar
Eleven wagons of a goods train derailed between Jungle Gopali and Badalbaba villages in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, railway officials said on Monday.
The train, carrying coal for NTPC’s Kahalgaon thermal power plant, derailed around midnight, the sources said.
Railway track upto a distance of 300 meters and three bridges were damaged due to the derailment.

Goods train derails, rail services affected
Train services at Viramgam in the Ahmedabad division of Western Railway were disrupted on Sunday afternoon following derailment of four coaches of a goods train heading toward Pipava. The incident occurred at 1.50 pm causing a major block, forcing the railway authorities to divert nine trains via Mehsana.
Due to the incident and the consequent change of route, trains going via Viramgam on Sunday were delayed by around three hours in reaching their destinations, railway officials said. A team of senior officials from Ahmedabad rushed to the spot with a relief car, said the officials.

Freight train derails near Sandusky
SANDUSKY — A westbound Norfolk Southern freight train derailed west of Sandusky Wednesday afternoon, sending 12 of its 108 cars off the tracks along a stretch that runs parallel between Barrett Road and Sandusky Bay.
Railroad spokesman Dave Pidgeon said 11 of the derailed cars were empty; one upended car was carrying sand that spilled.
No hazardous materials were involved and no one was injured, he said. The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m.
The train, pulled by four locomotives, had left Conway, Pa., en route to Elkhart, Ind.
Both sets of tracks were closed because of the derailment, which affected freight and Amtrak passenger trains, he said.
The cause of the derailment was not immediately unknown.

Lucky escape for Rajdhani near Gwalior as goods train derails
The goods train, coming from Delhi side and carrying wheat, derailed and some waggons fell on the Down-track along which Rajdhani was to pass, railway sources said.
The engine of the train hit a pole on the Up-track, and fell on the other side.
However, as the information about derailment reached Gwalior, the railway staff there immediately contacted the driver of Rajdhani over wireless and asked him to stop the train at Sithouli station before Gwalior.
As the Rajdhani, which has no stop at Gwalior, was to pass without halting, there could have been a major mishap had the staff not acted swiftly, sources added.
The train traffic on both Up and Down lines remained disrupted for over two hours. Later the stranded trains including Rajdhani moved on along the Up-track.
The rail traffic on the Down-track was restored around 11 am. No casualty has been reported in the derailment.

BHUBANESWAR: Train services were affected after a goods train derailed near Mancheswar railway station on Wednesday. Since the wagons of the goods train fell� both on up and down lines, the movement of passenger trains was affected.
�East Coast Railway sources said the cement-laden goods train was heading towards the unloading point through the loop line when it went off the tracks at about 8.45 am.
The derailed wagons fell on both the lines due to its positioning.
�This caused disruption in traffic and some long-distance trains had to be controlled. Falaknuma Express and Yeshwantpur-Howrah Duronto Express were controlled at different points whereas Rajdhani Express left Bhubaneswar on time.
�The ECoR cleared one line by 11 am while the second line was cleared by 2 pm.
No one was injured in the incident.

DECATUR, Ind. (WANE) – A train derailment has closed a Decatur street Thursday afternoon.
According to Decatur police, the train derailed near the Bunge soy bean processing plant.
Bunge officials said around noon the engine was going over a switch and the switch broke and caused the front wheels of the engine to go off the tracks. Crews were able to push the engine back onto the tracks.
Second Street is expected to be closed for two to three more hours while repairs are made.
A switch is the mechanism used to switch trains from one track to another.

Metra train derailment leaves Chicago morning commuters stranded in the cold
On the coldest day yet so far this winter, a train derailment on Chicago’s commuter rail line known as Metra left dozens of commuters stranded in the cold.
The incident took place Friday morning as the city of Chicago prepared for an onslaught of snow and cold that is likely to leave the city buried beneath as much as 8 inches of snow before it’s gone. The incident took place on the rail line’s Union Pacific North line. It caused canceled trains and delayed things by as much as an hour for frustrated and freezing commuters.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the train had been set to go into service for the morning commute when the front two wheels of the engine went off the tracks. This completely snarled things along the busy rail line. The delays caused because of the derailment and Metra’s frantic attempts to get the line cleared created a chain reaction that had commuters still frustrated, running late and stranded by as late as 11 a.m.
The temperatures along the rail lines this morning were running as low as five degrees below zero in some places. In some areas, the wind chills were down to as much as 10 degrees below zero. At many Metra stations, there is little in the way of shelter for commuters, who must stand beside the railroad tracks to await their trains.
So far there has been no word from Metra when they think normal times and conditions will be restored. Now that it is past the lunch hour, snow has started to fall across the Chicago metropolitan area, in some areas very heavy. Weather forecasters are predicting that this could be one of the biggest snow storms of the season so far. The storm is part of the same storm that dumped inches of snow in Seattle and across Colorado days ago. The heaviest snows are predicted to hit the area just in time for the evening rush, which means drivers and rail commuters could be in for a rough evening.
A winter weather warning has been issued for the Chicago area that started at 9 a.m, this morning and extends until Saturday morning. The snow fall is expected to be heavy and constant throughout the day on Friday and overnight. Some areas may get only a couple of inches, but residents near the Wisconsin-Illinois border may get up to eight inches total before the storm continues to move east.
Chicago had an abnormally mild winter throughout November and December. It was the first non-white Christmas in the past several years for the area. Now, within the space of two weeks, two large snow storms have hit the area and earlier this week the Chicago area was hit by sleet, freezing rain and then snow. This has been coupled with extremely cold temperatures with wind chills reaching well below zero.

A train derailed southeast of the city early Friday near the hamlet of Hay Lakes.
No one was injured after the northbound train derailed around 8 a.m.
A spokesperson for CN Rail says 20 cars in total went off the tracks, which were carrying a variety of items that included plastic pellets, and general merchandise.
Some of the cars were empty as well.
Crews are still on the scene. It's not known what caused the derailment.

Norfolk's Tide is running again after a light-rail train traveling westbound at low speed derailed between Colley Avenue and Second Street on Friday evening.
Hampton Roads Transit's CEO Philip Shucet said six passengers were on board when the train derailed on Brambleton Avenue around 5:45 p.m.
There were no injuries, and Shucet said the train derailed going through a switch in tracks.
The train had been returned to the tracks and service resumed this morning, HRT spokesman Tom Holden said in a press release.
HRT officials provided buses to transport passengers between the Harbor Park and Eastern Virginia Medical Center/Fort Norfolk stations. Shucet said he's expecting the train to have full service by today.
Earlier Friday, light-rail service was temporarily interrupted between the Newtown and Ballentine stations.
Repairs were made and power was restored.
Pat Miskill lives in an apartment building across the street from where the Brambleton derailment took place. He said he was eating dinner with his wife about the time the derailment occurred.
He said he and his wife have ridden the HRT trains before.
"This is just an unfortunate incident," Miskill said. "I guess these things happen; we don't want them to, but they do."

Wainwright train derailment is third rail incident in past week
EDMONTON - A CN train derailed near Wainwright Saturday, the third rail incident in Alberta this week.
A train travelling from Winnipeg to Edmonton derailed west of Wainwright, near the hamlet of Fabyan, around 4:15 p.m. Saturday, said CN spokeswoman Julie Senécal. Of the 31 cars loaded with grain, 17 fell from a trestle into the valley below.
CN crews are working to repair damage to the bridge, said Senécal said.
On Friday, a northbound train hauling 18 cars derailed just outside of Hay Lakes around 8 a.m.
There were no injuries and no environmental impact from either incident, Senécal said. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the trains to derail.
“Every relevant factor is evaluated,” Senécal said.
Last Tuesday, a freight train with nearly a dozen coal cars collided with another, stationary train 55 kilometres north of Hinton.
Three of the company’s employees were involved in the collision. One was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital and released that day.

Train derails on bridge southeast of Edmonton
Second derailment in area since Friday
A train went off the rails Saturday near Wainwright, Alta., roughly 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
The train derailed roughly halfway across a bridge over a valley on its way from Winnipeg to Edmonton at around 4:15 p.m. MT.
In total, 31 cars fell off the tracks — 17 of them went off the bridge and into the valley below. All them were grain cars.
The steel bridge was also damaged, so trains are being rerouted in the area.
Canadian National (CN) Railway Co. spokeswoman Julie Senecal said there were no injuries or environmental concerns.
When asked if the second derailment is similar to one that happened on Friday, Senecal said they can’t comment as both are still under investigation to determine the cause.
Senecal said they don't have any resource problems trying to clean up two accidents at once.

TERMINAL ISLAND -- Los Angeles and Long Beach Fire Department crews were called to a rail yard in the Harbor area late Tuesday after two train cars derailed, dumping what was initially feared to be contaminated soil.
Fire crews from both agencies were called to the yard near the 2400 block of East Sepulveda Boulevard, which straddles Long Beach and Wilmington, at about 4:30 p.m. regarding a possible contaminated soil spill, said Long Beach Firefighter Matthew Dobberpuhl.
"The rail yard called us back and told us we didn't need to come out," Dobberpuhl said.
Nonetheless, crews were dispatched to investigate and found two rail cars had rolled onto their sides and spilled soil, which was found to be non-hazardous, Dobberpuhl said.
There were no injuries, the LBFD spokesman said.

12 train cars derail, close highway in Rogers County
ROGERS COUNTY, Okla. - A series of train cars that derailed overnight in Inola shut down State Highway 88 Tuesday.
Union Pacific says 12 cars carrying a mixed load of coal, scrap metal and flour derailed around midnight just south of 412.
The rail company brought in equipment from Tulsa and Kansas to clear the area.
Rogers County sheriff's deputies said the derailment did not affect homes or businesses in the area.
The track speed is 49 miles-per-hour. Investigators are working to determine if speed was a factor in the accident.
Only two people were on board at the time of the accident. Neither were injured.
Highway 88 was shut down for most of the morning. As of around 10:30 a.m., crews reopened one lane of the highway. Flagmen and highway patrol are directing traffic. Drivers are urged to use caution and expect delays.

CN baffled by derailment
Canadian National Railway is trying to figure out what caused a train to derail near Wainwright Saturday afternoon, the third in one week.
A train heading to Edmonton from Winnipeg around 4:15 pm. Saturday derailed as it crossed a bridge over a valley located about 32 km west of Wainwright.
It sent 17 of the 31 cars – carrying loads of grain – falling to the valley below, said CN spokeswoman Julie Senécal.
There were no reported injuries or environmental issues, she added, but crews are working to repair damage to the bridge.
Trains are now being rerouted to minimize delay to customer shipments.
Senécal said investigators remained at the site Sunday, working to determine what caused the train to go off track. There’s no word on when the line will reopen.
Around 8 a.m. Friday, a train hauling plastic pellets and other general merchandise went off the track near Hay Lakes.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of that accident.
Two days earlier, freight cars loaded with coal collided with a stationary train around noon on the main line between Hinton and Grande Cache.
One crew member was taken to hospital, but was released the next day, said Senécal. CN officials and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
“Accidents by nature are unpredictable. I can tell you it’s not common or uncommon, there are no common denominators,” said Senécal.
“One accident is too many, and every relevant factor is evaluated. We’re very serious about investigations. The last thing we want is for someone to get hurt.”
