Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Train derailment backs up traffic in Marathon, Alpine

A train derailment in Brewster County early Monday morning delayed train traffic until about 9:30 p.m. officials with Union Pacific Railroad report.

The derailment occurred at 6:20 a.m. Monday when a rail car loaded with pipe on a train going from Los Angeles, Calif. to Houston derailed about 10 miles west of Longfellow about five miles from the Brewster County line. UP officials said there were no injuries as a result of the derailment.

Train traffic was backed up around Alpine and Marathon following the derailment.

A total of 12 trains were delayed as a result of the derailment, but the line was opened to train traffic at about 9:30 p.m. said Mark Davis, a spokesman for Union Pacific.

Because of the rural location UP crews brought equipment from San Antonio so they could remove the pipe from the derailed car.

“Crews worked yesterday to place the derailed car of pipe back on the track and repair some track damaged as a result of the derailment,” Davis said.

Crews are currently working to reposition the pipe on two rail cars that shifted as the result of the derailment, Davis said.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

20 injured as train derails in Kashmir

    Additional information.

SRINAGAR/ROURKELA, 23 NOV: At least 20 people were injured today when a train from Qazigund to Srinagar derailed in Kulgam district, the first such incident since train services were launched in Kashmir Valley in 2008.
The engine and two bogies of the train derailed at Sedura village, 55 km from here, as the driver overshot the intended station stop by nearly 200 metres, officials said. They said 20 people sustained minor injuries in the mishap. “All the injured persons were evacuated to a hospital,” a senior police official in Kulgam said.
A team of Railway officials has rushed to the spot to investigate the cause of the mishap. “We are heading to the scene of the accident. The cause of derailment will be known only after the investigations are complete,” Chief Area Manager, Northern Railways, Mr Opender Singh said.
Official sources said preliminary investigations have found that there was some problem with the brakes of the train. The first train service was introduced in the Valley in October, 2008.
Today's mishap is the third involving railways since yesterday. Seven persons were killed when two coaches of the Doon Express caught fire in Jharkhand yesterday.                                                                             In another incident four passengers were injured today when the Howrah-bound Koraput-Howrah Express collided with a goods train at Jharsuguda Station in Odisha. The accident has been attributed to "signal overshooting" as both the trains started moving in the same direction, though signal was given for one to depart the station in the Chakradharpur division, about 110 km from here, the deputy superintendent of police for Government Reserve Police at Jharsuguda, Mr MK Mahato said.

    The burning train

Three rail accidents over the last two days serve as yet another reminder of poor rail safety standards. The fire in the Howrah-Dehradun Express, the collision of a goods train with Koraput-Howrah Express and the derailment of the Qazigund-Srinagar-Baramulla train all follow a recurring pattern. Since the start of the year there were fires in both the prestigious Mumbai-Delhi and the Delhi-Patna Rajdhani Express trains. The worst mishaps happened following the derailment of the Kalka Mail, which killed 70 people, and the collision between the Chennai suburban train and the Arakonam-Katpadi passenger train, which left another 10 people dead. While the Railways claims that the number of serious accidents has fallen from 100 in 2009-10 to 93 in 2010-11, the number of people killed in accidents has increased from 68 to 250 in the same period.

The actual reasons for the recent accidents will be known - hopefully - after the reports of the Commissioner of Railway Safety are filed. But the Railways can only blame itself for its lack of investment in safety. The fire and smoke detection system was introduced in 20 trains just a year back as a pilot project. Similarly, anti-collision devices, introduced more than a decade back, are still only available in about eight railway zones. A recent CAG audit noted that the number of safety personnel was well below required norms in all 16 zones. This has almost certainly contributed to the frequency of accidents. The Railways needs to take the safety and security of its passengers far more seriously than it does now.

3 Indian Train Incidents in 24 Hours

Indian Railways TrainIndia has been hit with three train incidents in less than 24 hours, and these have resulted in a total of at least seven people being killed and over 35 injured. The first tragedy happened on Tuesday with the Howrah-Dehradun Express catching fire in Jharkhand. The other two happened early on Wednesday – a train derailment in Anantnag, Kashmir and a two-train collision in Odisha.

In the Jharkhand train fire on Tuesday, seven people were confirmed dead – including two children and one Australian – and more than 12 injured after the B1 and B2 coaches caught fire at full occupancy. Dhanbad and Giridih firefighters reported to the scene and spend five hours extinguishing the blaze, which burned the coaches beyond recognition.

Dhanbad division railway superintendent of police PK Srivastav said that they are still investigating the accident. It appears that all seven passengers killed in the fire were on the B1 coach, which is believed to have caught fire first while carrying 72 passengers. The burned coaches have been detached from the train and transferred to Gomoh railway station so that the rest of the train could continue to its destination.

One passenger reported that the fire started after someone turned off the air-conditioner and switched on the heat. Railway protection force commandant Sashi Kumar says the incident happened around 2:35 in the morning, when most of the passengers were sleeping.

In the Kashmir derailment on Wednesday, at least 20 people were injured. The incident happened about 70km from Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir. A government official said that three bogeys and an engine derailed due to some technical snag. The injured passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to a disaster management official, and none of them are said to have been seriously hurt.

Senior railway officials reported to the scene to begin an investigation into what caused the incident. Indian railway technical teams were at the spot to return the bogeys to the track. They said that they didn’t yet know what caused the accident, but a preliminary probe has indicated a problem with the train’s brakes. A senior government official has requested that an enquiry be conducted and a full report be submitted to the local government.

In the Odisha collision, four passengers were injured when the Koraput-Howrah Express crashed into a goods train at Jharsuguda Station. The accident happened due to the overshooting of signals as both of the vehicles moved in the same direction. GRP DSP at Jharsuguda, MK Mahato, said that one of the trains was signalled to depart the station. Three of the injured were treated at the scene, and the other was admitted to a hospital.

South Eastern Railways said that, at first glance, the Koraput-Howrah Express driver is believed to have violated the starter signal. This resulted in the collision with a goods train that began from an adjacent line. An inquiry will be conducted into the accident, according to the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

    Northeast monsoon hits normal life

Life was thrown out of gear in most parts of Tamil Nadu as the rain battered the state, particularly in coastal districts like Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chennai besides parts of interior Perambalur.

However, the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease gradually in the northern districts from Sunday evening and a couple of days later in south TN.

According to the regional meteorological department, a sharp rise in the rainfall level was witnessed with the state receiving 5.5 cm rainfall overall, which is around 1,200 times more than the day’s (Saturday) average.

Even the cumulative total of the state was 23 per cent more than average rainfall for the northeast monsoon season, which starts from October first week.

Deputy director of regional met department, Mr Y.E.A. Raj told Deccan Chronicle said that large number of weather stations recorded around 12.5 cm rainfall.

Clear sky could be expected by Sunday evening or Monday morning. However, the southern districts will continue to receive sharp spells of rain and gradually ease around November 30 as the depression off the coast of Thiruvanthapuram is expected to move northwest, affecting the islands on Arabian sea, Mr Raj pointed out.

Areas like Mangadu, Ka-rayanchavadi and Porur besides low-lying areas in the city were worst hit with residents complaining about heavy flooding and inundation.

Besides flooding, the sharp spell of rains uprooted several trees like a huge tamarind tree on the highway that fell across the rail tracks at Perungulathur, leaving EMU movement on Tambaram-Chengalpet stretch affected for over an hour.

Vehicle movement was also deeply affected with the commuters moving in snail’s pace due to wat-erlogged and damaged roads.

Likewise, derailment of an engine at Villupuram plus the heavy downpour delayed all Chennai bound trains by over couple of hours this morning. Likewise, in the delta region, the paddy fields were inundated, leaving farmers high and dry.

    V/Line off the rails

    28 Nov, 2011 01:00 AM
A V/LINE train bound for the Border derailed in Melbourne on Saturday night, leaving disoriented passengers in smoke-filled carriages.

The 135 passengers had to clamber down a ladder from the carriages.

An investigation is under way as to how the 6.01pm return train to Albury left the tracks only 10 metres from West Footscray station.

The line was closed yesterday until late afternoon to fix the track and clear the derailed carriages, with last night’s 6.01pm service to Albury expected to operate under speed restrictions.

It comes just three months after an interstate XPT train derailed on the Melbourne suburban network.

A mudhole was blamed for that 150-passenger train derailing near Coolaroo, about 20 kilometres from Southern Cross station.

Now one train down, V/Line has cancelled today’s 6.35am service from Albury to Southern Cross and the 12pm service from Southern Cross to Albury.

V/Line spokeswoman Clare Steele said although the train was travelling about 60km/h when it derailed, no one was injured.

“There was no injuries to staff or passengers but they would have felt a jolt,” she said.

“Passengers would have been about an hour late home, which we apologise for.”

Passenger Lyn McErvale, of Yarrawonga, said the jolting and the swaying of the derailed carriages, and the smoke, left some passengers in shock.

She said passengers had to walk up a slippery embankment to get to buses.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation’s Brian Dale said an investigation would be carried out by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

He said the derailment had chopped up some of the track, which had been repaired by yesterday afternoon.

“Our job is to get the track back running as fast as possible and we are working with V/Line to recommence the passenger services,” he said.

Passengers use a ladder top climb down from the derailed train, then climb the embankment.

Two locos of freight train derailed on K-K Line

    PTI | 05:11 PM,Nov 27,2011

Visakhapatnam (AP), Nov 27 (PTI) Rail traffic between Visakhaptnam railway station in Andhra Pradesh and Kirandul railway station in Chhattisgarh was disrupted following derailment of two locos of a goods train in wee hours today due to suspected sabotage by Maoists, official sources said. The incident occurred due to removal of fish plates, allegedly by suspected ultras on K-K Line (Kothavalasa-Kirandul Line) under the Waltair Line of the East Coast Railway, they said. According to sources, the role of naxals is suspected owing to the encounter of prominent Maoist leader Molajula Koteswar Rao, alias Kishenji, who was killed in a gunfight with security forces at Burisole jungle in West Midnapore district of West Bengal on November 24. Kishenji was cremated at his native Peddapalli in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. Top railway officials, including Additional Divisional Railway Manager P Madhusudhanra Rao, visited the spot to supervise the track restoration works. The rail services on the route are likely to be resumed by the evening, sources added. PTI CORR NSK

A Merseyrail train like the one that was derailed A Merseyrail train like the one that was derailed

Police are hunting vandals who are being blamed for de-railing a Liverpool region train.

British Transport Police detectives believe ballast from the track bed was deliberately moved in order to cause the Merseyrail train to come off the track at Rock Ferry station.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning on Monday 28th November) as the 00.11 Ellesmere Port to Rock Ferry service pulled out of the station.

There were no passengers on the train at the time of the derailment.

BTP say that early investigative work suggests vandals placed ballast into the workings of the tracks to cause an obstruction.

Det Chief Insp Malcolm McKinnon said: "This was an extremely dangerous and foolish act.

"Fortunately no one was injured in this incident, but there was a real risk of injury to people using the railway or to the offenders themselves as this is a line with third rail electrification.

"We need to trace those responsible and I am calling on the public to help."

    CSX train derails in Hyattsville

A CSX train derailed in Prince George's County on Tuesday after hitting a "safety derailer." (Mark Brady)
A CSX freight train derailed around 2:42 p.m. in the 2900 block of 52nd Avenue in an industrial park in Hyattsville, according to Prince George’s authorities.

There were no reported injuries, officials said.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady said the locomotive “hit a derailer on a side track, which triggered an intentional derailment and resulting in “a small diesel fuel spill.” Such derailers are installed as safety devices. The train was headed for a main track at the time, Brady said. It was unclear if the train was being operated remotely.

Brady said fire department hazardous material crews assisted CSX with the clean-up. Bob Sullivan, a CSX spokesman, said the fuel spill had “all been contained.”

The incident did not cause any evacuations or disruptions to commuter rail and vehicle traffic, officials said.

Freight train derailment blocks Metra's Heritage line Photo: Freight train derailment blocks Metra's Heritage line Freight train derails Photo: Freight train derails

A freight train derailed on a viaduct at 47th Street and Archer Avenue this morning, delaying Metra trains on the Heritage Corridor line and blocking traffic in the area.

WGN-TV video showed about a half dozen derailed freight cars, with one car leaning over the overpass. The leaning car bore the markings of the intermodal transportation company J.B. Hunt.

The cars are carrying office supplies, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said. He added that the intersection would be closed at least until 9 a.m. A crane will have to upright the derailed cars, he said.

Amy McBeth, a spokeswoman for BNSF Railway Co., said the train was departing the company's Corwith Yard to the north when a stacked car derailed on the Archer Avenue bridge.

The cause of the derailment, which occurred about 6:40 a.m., is under investigation, she said. There were no reported injuries, she said.

The fire department and Chicago Police department were both at the scene.

Joliet-to-Chicago train No. 914 on the Heritage Corridor line, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 6:50 a.m.,was stopped, blocked by the derailment, according to a service advisory posted on Metra’s website. Metra said the train is running 37 minutes late.

Train #914 is the first of three trains that departs Joliet each morning for Chicago along the Heritage Corridor.

The CTA rerouted its No. 62 Archer buses both directions via 47th, Lawndale, 51st, Kedzie, and 47th, due to street blockage.

Elmira Officials Frustrated Over Train Rail Car Derailment

Elmira, N.Y. - City officials in Elmira said they're frustrated they never received a call from Norfolk Southern when its train rail carderailed over the weekend.  And now they're looking for answers.

A Norfolk Southern Rail Car is sitting upside down in an Elmira parking lot after derailing on Saturday night around 7:20.  Monday night, more than 48 hours later, city officials are still waiting to hear from the railroad company.

After derailing, the car fell over a wall near the Hilliard parking lot.  The railcar is loaded with sand.   It was just passing by Hilliard's property when the accident happened.  A spokesman for Norfolk Southern has told us only that the accident is under investigation.

At Monday's Elmira City Council meeting, city manager, John Burin, says Norfolk Southern still hasn't explained the situation to the city.

Burin says, "No one has called us to explain anything. No one had called Hilliards to explain anything and this rail car's in their yard."

Now, Burin says he's going to find out why Norfolk Southern feels they don't have to call Hilliards and the city.

He also says he wants to know the company's protocol when dealing with incidents like this.

Councilmember James Hare suggested tonight to alert the Attorney General office and even restore the lower speed limit.

Currently the train speed limit is at 50 miles per hour.  It used to be 30 miles per hour.

"Polar Express" train derails, hundreds bussed back to Union Station

    Story Updated: Dec 8, 2011
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad's "Polar Express" train derailed Thursday night in Utica, leaving nearly 370 passengers stranded.

The train was traveling from Utica towards Holland Patent. It derailed just after stopping at Union Station, but still within city limits.

Sgt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department says the train derailed in the area of Harbor Point Road, North Genesee Street and Lee Street.

Passengers were on the train for about ten minutes after departing Union Station. They were reportedly singing Christmas carols and having a good time when train officials came back and told them that the train had gone off the track and they needed to evacuate.

Officials say the train derailed about three feet off the track.

Passengers were moved to train cars that were still safe, then disembarked the train near Marcy, where they gathered. Centro buses were used to transport people from Marcy back to Union Station.

At least three train cars slid off the tracks. All of the cars were still upright. Utica Fire Officials have confirmed only one minor injury.

One of the passengers on one of the derailed cars, John St. Pierre, spoke exclusively with NEWSChannel 2. Pierre said, "We were not scared. Yes, I knew what was happening. We were going really slow at the time. The car just vibrated alot and there was a loud grinding noise."

Pierre added, "The elves, train volunteers, and the Utica Fire personal have all been great and very helpful throughout this whole event. We are now on the part of the train that did not derail and we are now moving again."

Officials at the Adirondack Scenic Railroad say refunds and ticket options are being discussed to reimburse the passengers involved.

An investigation is expected to begin Friday morning.

New Dual Diesel-electric engine; Transport Safety Board to investigate cause of Central Station incident

Put in service three weeks ago, the first of 20 new Bombardier locomotives purchased for Montreal's commuter-train network derailed at Central Station on Friday.

No one was injured but the incident raises new questions about the safety of plans to use the locomotives, which carry diesel fuel, in the train tunnel under Mount Royal.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, a federal agency that investigates rail accidents, has sent an investigator to look into the Central Station incident, said spokesperson Chris Krepski.

On Friday, the 1,400 commuters on the Mont St. Hilaire train that derailed just before 8 a.m. felt the train suddenly stop but passengers were able to disembark normally, said Martine Rouette, a spokesperson for the Agence métropolitaine de transport.

The locomotive went off the tracks. It was pulling nine double-decker Bombardier train cars, one of which also went off the rails, Rouette said.

The AMT, Montreal's commuter train authority, and Canadian National, which owns the tracks, are investigating.

She said the cause of the incident is unclear.

The locomotive in question is an ALP-45 DP, which Bombardier bills as a "North American first." It is dual-powered, meaning it can switch mid-trip between diesel and electric power.

Only two agencies have ordered them - the AMT and New Jersey Transit. Two locomotives have been delivered to the AMT, only one of which is in service, said Bombardier spokesperson Marc Laforge. New Jersey received some but none are in service; they are still being tested.

Laforge said he did not know of other cases where the locomotives derailed.

The AMT ordered 20 of the locomotives in 2009. The cost: $236 million. With extra charges, including tariffs (they are built in Germany), the price tag will be $308 million.

Opened in 1918, the Mount Royal tunnel, owned by CN, runs between Town of Mount Royal and Montreal's Central Station. For most of its history, only electric trains have travelled through the tunnel.

The AMT is to begin running the new locomotives, carrying significant amounts of diesel, through the tunnel in 2013, when it launches a new Mascouche train. It is to run on diesel until it reaches the tunnel. At that point, it will switch to electric but will still be carrying diesel fuel.

Avrom Shtern, a transit activist who first raised concerns about diesel trains in the tunnel in 2009, said the derailment raises alarm bells.

"Even if it's not related to the locomotive, just imagine what would have happened if it was in the tunnel and another train was passing on the other track," he said. He said the risk of fire is too high, noting the tunnel does not feature any escape routes.

The Projet Montréal party and the Montreal firefighters' union have said they are concerned about potential accidents. The Parti Québécois has demanded escape exits be built.

AMT president Joël Gauthier insists the tunnel can safely accommodate the locomotives, which carry up to 6,800 litres of diesel. He says escape exits are not needed.

A recent study recommended $14 million in safety improvements to the tunnel. They include $5 million for evacuation sidewalks, $3 million for v

    Freight train derails in Montchanin
4 cars jump tracks; several roads closed

Train derailment forces detours in Montchanin: A train derailment is forcing traffic detours in the Montchanin area. Montchanin Road (Del. 100) was closed about two hours but has been reopened, DelDOT says.

Four cars of a freight train jumped the tracks Friday afternoon, snarling traffic at Del. 100 and Rockland Road in Montchanin but causing no injuries.

Montchanin Road (Del. 100) was closed for about two hours after the accident, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. just behind the old Montchanin train station. Rockland and Kirk roads remained blocked near the tracks.

Railroad and emergency officials weren't sure what caused the derailment.

One tank car had about 27,000 gallons of butane in it, but no leaks were detected, and many other cars were empty. At least one empty car had some damage, according to Al Sauer, vice president of East Penn Railroad, of Kennett Square, Pa., which operates several short lines in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

The train was moving at about 10 mph when the incident occurred, Sauer said.

Officials planned to decouple the cars from the 20-car train, removing the unaffected cars with a locomotive sent to the scene from Pennsylvania. Then, they planned to work to get the derailed cars back on track -- possibly with a crane.

"They may have to fix a little section of track, too," said Talleyville Fire Company Chief Tom Looney.

No environmental hazard was expected, according to Jamie Bethard of the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

"It may be a little noisy around here for a while, though," he said. "It's not all going to happen tonight, either."

Train cars derail at Charles City

Grain erupted from one car derailed at Charles City. Other cars held scrap metal.

CHARLES CITY — Thirteen cars of a Canadian Pacific train derailed just before 1 p.m. Saturday at Charles City.

Cars were carrying soybeans and scrap metal. There were no injuries.

They came off the track at a length of southbound rail, just off the Avenue of the Saints near Highway 14, according to Ed Greenberg, a spokesman for the railroad.

Cause of the derailment is under investigation, he said.

“It would be premature to speculate on a cause as we begin an extensive investigation into what happened,” Greenberg said.

He added the railroad’s concern is to conduct “an appropriate response” that includes not only cleaning up the derailed cars and spillage, but to make sure there was no adverse environmental impact.

He said each derailment case is different and he could not guess at how long that process would take.

“It just all depends on the incident,” he said.

The train was bound for Marquette, Iowa.

“We have rerouting options” for rail traffic, he said, so that is not a concern, he said.

Two injured after train derails in cyclone flooding

    Updated December 27, 2011 13:30:13

Two men have been injured after they were trapped in a freight train that was swept off a bridge near Katherine, south of Darwin.

The train derailed near the Edith Falls River Crossing in floodwaters caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant.

Heavy rain from the system, which is now a tropical low, has brought heavy rain and isolated flooding to the Northern Territory, cutting sections of the Stuart Highway.

Are you in a flood-affected area in the NT? Send in your photos

Police say the train's driver and co-driver have been rescued by emergency workers and are being taken to the Katherine District Hospital to be assessed.

Earlier, a CareFlight helicopter attempted to rescue the men, but had to return to Darwin because it was unable to land in the wet conditions.

The Member for Katherine, Willem Westra Van Holthe, says the Edith River Bridge has collapsed and carriages are floating downstream.

"It's what I'd describe as a scene of devastation here," he said.

"Apart from the enormous amount of water flowing across the road, there's sheets of bitumen that have been lifted off and carried away and also it appears as though the train tried to get across this morning while the river has flooded.

"The train bridge appears to have collapsed."

    Pair swept away

NT police have also rescued two people who were swept from their car in the flooding.

A man and a woman were swept off the roof of their car on the Edith River Bridge after it aquaplaned and stalled about 2am.

They were able to cling to a tree about 50 metres downstream and were rescued a short time later.

A flood warning is in effect for some low-lying parts of Katherine.

There are road closures at the Edith River Bridge Crossing and the Cullen River Crossing in the Pine Creek and Douglas Daly region.

NT Police spokesman Tony Deutrom says officers in the area have been monitoring the situation.

"From Pine Creek south we've got police on-site and have been in and out through the night," he said.

"In Katherine up to Edith Bridge, had emergency services out during the night as well.

"The Katherine emergency operations centre's been activated overnight."

    Published: Monday, Dec 26, 2011

Two coaches of an army freight train were derailed on Saturday between Karjoda and Palanpur railway stations of Gujarat, affecting traffic on the Palanpur-Ahmadabad route, railway officials said.

Trains including Haridwar-Ahmedabad, Jammu Tavi-Ahmedabad and Ajmer-Bangalore were delayed by two to three hours, they said, adding there were no injuries in the incident.

According to officials, the incident took place when two coaches adjacent to the engine of the train derailed blocking the railway tracks.

There has been no major damage, Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector, Abu Road station, B P Saini said, denying possibility of sabotage.

The Army personnel traveling with the train refused to divulge the destination and contents of the goods the train was carrying citing security reasons.

A technical team that was rushed from Abu Road attributed the derailment to repair work on the main railway line.

The wagons were put on the track after over four hours of work and the train resumed its journey.

Problem may have been with derailed coach

MUMBAI: Unit failure could be the reason for the derailment of the sixth coach of the Kalyan-bound train that led to a massive disruption of rail traffic on Wednesday.

A senior official said, "There is no evidence to identify any particular fault and the detailed inquiry is being conducted by the commissioner of railway safety (CRS). We can speculate on unit-related failure because the derailment happened after five coaches passed the accident spot. There was no visible damage to the track. But the tongue rail, the part on the tracks that helps a train cross from one line to another, suffered damages as the derailed wheels were dragged ahead while the train was in motion."

Another theory is that the train wheels touched the fish-plate, a metal bar bolted at the ends of two rails to join them together in a track. A senior official said, "This can happen only if either the track or the wheel has got eroded. Another option is to remove the fishplate at the yard. We can try out continuous or long-welded rail method in which the lengths of the rail are welded to join them together in a track."

Metro police spokesman Eugene Msomi said the police had wanted to pull over the car because the driver was acting suspiciously.

“The traffic officers tried to stop the car but the man drove past. The officers gave chase and called for back-up. We suspect that the car may be stolen or hijacked,” he said.

Metro police said the driver failed to negotiate a bend and crashed through a bridge and landed on the railway line.

A Metrorail train then hit the car and left the tracks.

A Kalyan-bound local train was derailed from its tracks as it rolled out of CST station at 8.42 am yesterday, wreaking havoc on railway schedules

A Kalyan-bound local train derailed from its tracks at 8.42 am yesterday, throwing train services awry and inconveniencing thousands of passengers. While some had to undertake hazardous treks on the tracks back to stations, others were stranded in halted trains, or at stations waiting for delayed trains.

pushed the derailed coach towards the platform. New tracks were also
laid, all in a span of 11 hours from the incident. Pics /Bipin Kokate

The train started out from platform number 7 of CST, and deviated from the rails even as it was rolling out of the platform. Sources claim that the reason for the derailment could have been a problem in a coach. Owing to the snag, the train failed to navigate a steep curve, causing part of the coach to tilt at an angle of 45 degrees from the track.
"A detailed enquiry will be conducted. Prima facie, it seems there was some problem with the coach, and not with the track," said a senior Central Railway official on condition of anonymity.
Sources have revealed that the derailment occurred owing to a mismatch between the pace of the underlying frame of the train and its wheels, which displaced the coach completely. The train was moving at a speed of 15 km per hour, with only four commuters sitting inside the coach that was derailed.
Other officials claimed that the derailment might have resulted from lack of maintenance.
Commissioner of Railway Safety Chetan Bakshi paid a visit to the spot soon after the incident, and promised that he would conduct an inquiry. Due to the derailment, the train was dragged for a distance of nearly 50 metres along the track before it came to a halt.
    Services disrupted
The derailment threw train schedules awry throughout the day. Some 120 services had to be cancelled, and trains moving towards CST and Kalyan ran late by an hour.
Sangita Holkar, an inconvenienced commuter said, "I somehow managed to catch a train from Thane. But the train was cancelled at Kurla. I waited for nearly half an hour to board another train. It took 45 minutes for the train to reach Dadar from Kurla."
Commuters who boarded CST-bound trains from Kalyan in the early morning hours took nearly three hours to reach their destination.
The mishap also disrupted the departure of the long-distance Mumbai-Kolhapur Koyna Express. The train, which was waiting to depart from a platform in the station at the time of the mishap, was eventually cancelled.
Prabhakar Rankhambe, who boarded the train with his family, said, "We came to Mumbai to attend a family function, and were supposed to leave for Kolhapur this morning. We heard repeated announcements that the train would depart soon, but were kept waiting. Only at 1:30 pm was it announced that the Koyna Express was cancelled."
Meanwhile, the fast trains moving towards CST had to be diverted at Byculla. Most trains ran 15-20 minutes late all day.
Though the accident did not claim any lives, Buddhiram (42), a commuter panicked and jumped out of the derailed train, sustaining some minor injuries. "He twisted his ankle and has been admitted to the Railway Hospital in Byculla," said Rahul Jain, divisional railway manager, Central Railway.
The tracks were finally cleared at around 7 pm, after nearly 50 workers pushed the derailed coach towards the platform. The other half of the train was kept waiting on pla

Injured crew treated at NT derailment

Two train drivers, whose freight train was flushed off a bridge across a flooded Northern Territory river are recovering in Kathrine District Hospital.

The train was washed off the tracks by floodwaters between Katherine and Pine Creek this morning.

Northern Territory police say the injured drivers managed to walk out of the train and were assessed by officers at the site of the accident, and have since been taken to hospital.

The ABC has reported some of the carriages washed of the tracks and bridge carried chemicals, although they are not expected to pose a hazzard to people.

The torrential rain from ex-tropical Cyclone Grant is causing flooding in parts of the Northern Territory, stranding motorists on the main road out of Darwin and has caused the Cullen, Ferguson and Edith Rivers to swell to dangerous levels and flooding several roadways.

Cyclone Grant leaves Ghan train carrying 200 stranded

    news

The scene of a freight train derailment that left one train driver injured and another trapped after Cyclone Grant caused flash flooding.

PASSENGERS travelling on the Ghan became stuck in Katherine after a freight train derailed in flooding chaos.

Great Southern Rail spokeswoman Jessica Playford confirmed the Ghan, which was travelling with almost 200 passengers, was scheduled to reach Darwin this evening, reported the ntnews.com.au.

Ms Playford said they hoped to get the passengers into Darwin by coach tonight.

"Depending on what happens with the track and the roads - hopefully the roads will be open later today,'' she said.

Eyewitnesses at the scene of the iron ore train derailment - just north of Edith Falls River crossing - say the track has been badly damaged.

There are also reports that some of the train's carriages were washed by the flood waters into the car bridge down stream, and damaged that.

Ms Playford said there were already coaches organised to take the passengers from Katherine to Darwin.

The Ghan is also scheduled to leave Darwin for Adelaide tomorrow morning.

Ms Playford estimates just under 200 are booked for that journey as well.

Earlier today a train driver who sustained back injuries in this morning's derailment was flown to Katherine.

His co-driver was also rescued from the crash scene.

    Empty rail cars derail Monday

A five-car train derailment near Birdseye Monday afternoon remains under investigation, according to officials.

Lynda Frost with Montana Rail Link said no injuries were reported and all the cars were empty at the time. The derailment occurred around 3 p.m.

Scanner reports indicate a train has derailed near the Dresser Rand facility in Painted Post.

The reports came in at approximately 6:40 p.m.

Though some of the rail cars apparently contained LP gas, there was no indication of fire or a gas leak.

Leader staff on the scene say the derailment is minor, though traffic in the village has been disrupted by the stopped train.
