Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Derailment in Bhairab suspends train service for 12hrs

    File photo

Train communication on the Bhairab-Mymensingh-Chittagong route remained suspended for 12 hours till Thursday morning following a train derailment near Bhairab Railway Station in Kishoreganj.

Abdul Motaleb, station master of Bhairab Railway Station, said nine bogies of a Chittagong-bound cargo train veered off the tracks near the station around 6:00am Wednesday.

However, all the trains on the route were continuing operations through alternative routes, reports our Kishoreganj correspondent.

A salvage train from Akhaura went to the spot and started a rescue operation in the evening.

Train service on the routes came to a complete halt around 7:00pm Wednesday after four out of nine bogies accidentally fell on the main line during the rescue operation.

Train communication on the route resumed after the salvage train managed to clear the line around 7:00am Thursday, the station master said.

Illinois town evacuated following fiery train derailment

The entire town of Tiskilwa was evacuated early this morning after a freight train derailed and several tanker cars containing ethanol exploded, according to fire officials and area residents.

There were no reports of injuries in or around Tiskilwa, a town of about 800 people south of Princeton and about 115 miles west of Chicago.

"It's a mess," said Mike McComber, owner of the Indian Valley Inn, a restaurant bar where many town residents were taking refuge. "A quarter- to a half-mile of cars derailed.  Many of them are on fire.

"Everytime one of them explodes, it sounds like a bomb is going off. Three have gone off so far."

At least six cars of the 112-car train caught fire, according to Capt. Steve Haywood of the Ottawa Fire Department. Aerial shots showed the tanker cars heaped together and burning. The fire had not been brought under control by 7:25 a.m., he said, and firefighters will probably let the fire burn out.

The derailment occurred at about 2 a.m. at the eastern edge of town, where there is a subdivision, McComber said. Responding crews could see the fire from Interstate 80, about 9 miles away. Other area residents reported the glow could be seen from 12 miles.

The cars were carrying ethanol, or denatured alcohol, and possibly other materials and chemicals, McComber said. Ethanol is used in producing gasoline and for other industrial purposes.

Evacuees were being taken to Princeton High School. Kirk Haring, superintendent for Princeton High School District 500, said the Bureau County Red Cross was using the school as a shelter. Students had the day off anyway for a teacher institute day, he said.

Mike Hellberg, the county's Red Cross disaster chairman, said evacuees have started trickling into the school while he and others try to provide cots and meals.

Fire officials said the shipper was Decatur-based ADM Corn Processing. David Weintraub, a spokesman for ADM, said he couldn’t confirm the cars contained ADM products and referred questions to the train operator. He said ADM would cooperate with investigators and the rail company.

The train is operated by Iowa Interstate Railroad, according to Jeff Johnson, the company's director of safety and security said.

Hazardous materials teams from Ottawa, Utica, Marseilles, Peru, Mendota, Oglesby and Naplate were dispatched to the fire, Haywood said.

Train Derails in Caldwell; Evacuation Orders Have Been Lifted
Eleven cars of a BNSF train derailed at the State Highway 36 railroad overpass in Caldwell. State Highway 36 is closed at this time and will likely remain closed until midday Monday.

It was a close call and a quite a scare for many residents in Caldwell Sunday night after a train carrying hazardous material derails. Many residents living near the State highway 36 overpass were asked to temporarily evacuate as a precautionary measure.

It's something you don't see every day.

“It's just one of them things,” said Caldwell resident L.R. Ellis

L.R. Ellis was inside his home Sunday night, which is located next door to the State Highway 36 railroad overpass, when a BNSF train carrying hazardous material derailed.

A derailed shipping container hanging on by a thread is the scene just outside his window.

"It rumbles going through there, and then it made that racket and I figured someone just hit something you know,” added Ellis.

Eleven shipping containers derailed, one of those was carrying Sulfuric acid. As a precautionary measure, Caldwell police say some residents were forced to temporarily evacuate their homes.

"We did talk to the engineer and found out what we had and so we verified it was not an immediate threat by the fire department,” said Sergeant Phil Knight of the Caldwell Police Department.

One conductor and two engineers were reportedly on board the train, however, police on scene say no one was injured.

"I'm just glad everything turned out the way it did with the situation we had at hand," said Knight.

Officials say State Highway 36 will be closed down until Midday Monday. Meanwhile BNSF Officials are still trying to determine what caused the derailment. We will continue following this story and will have updates as soon as they become available.

    Train Derails In Rexburg

    Company Never Notified Police

A train carrying propane derailed last Friday night in Rexburg, but the local fire and police departments didn't find out until well after the fact. The cars slipped off the tracks, two of them were full of propane and two had just been emptied of gasoline. Luckily, nothing caught on fire or exploded, but the interesting part is Eastern Idaho Railroad didn't notify any local authorities the night it happened. The Madison Fire Department heard about the train coming off the tracks through word of mouth."The Eastern Idaho Railroad did not notify us of the derailment and they didn't consider it to be of any significant danger," said Fire Chief Corey Child.Child said when his crew investigated the accident, they quickly called in HAZ-MAT."Upon us looking at it, we found that two rail cars had splits in their outer tank," said Child.Four rail cars actually came off the tracks, two full of propane, like you would use in a grill."The potential there in the cars that were involved was obviously the propane that we were worried about," said Child. The Madison Fire Department called in the Federal Railroad Administration to check out the wreckage and a fleet from Pacific West came in from Salt Lake City, UT, to offload the propane Tuesday afternoon after it sat there all weekend.Reporter Jessica Crandall spoke with Garrett Bolyard, a representative for the railroad. When asked why his company didn't notify authorities at the time of the derailment, this is what he said."We didn't feel it was that bad and there was no contamination or leaking cars. But, we are working with authorities now," said Bolyard. The propane had to be siphoned out from the tanks Tuesday before they can be lifted up by a crane and placed back onto the tracks.Bolyard said he's glad the company is working with local agencies now and hindsight is always 20/20.Rexburg Police Captain Randy Lewis said, "somebody really dropped the ball on this one."Offloading the propane is a 24-hour process. Child said Pacific West will probably be done Wedsnesday afternoon.

Train derailment closes two Colton schools

    Colton train derailment
Two Colton schools were closed Tuesday because of a train collision and derailment that also is expected to shut a stretch of the 10 Freeway for a second time as one of the trains is set back on its tracks.

Wilson Elementary School and Colton High School will be closed, said Tom De Bellis, spokesman for the Colton Fire Department.

The collision between a Union Pacific train and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train occurred about 2:30 a.m. on tracks under the 10 south of Valley Boulevard and west of La Cadena Drive, De Bellis said.

Six cars of the Union Pacific train derailed, De Bellis said. Two of the cars were carrying ferrous chloride, a hazardous chemical used in the treatment of wastewater.

Authorities closed the freeway in both directions for three hours as a hazardous materials team searched for leaks. When none was found, the freeway was reopened, he said.

However, as a precaution, the freeway was to be shut down again later Tuesday morning as crews right the derailed cars, De Bellis said.

Chemical scare as train carrying sulphuric acid derails at Cloncurry

QR National is investigating a major chemical incident after a train carrying sulphuric acid derailed at Cloncurry.

Six of 15 bullet wagons loaded with the dangerous chemical derailed at the Cloncurry station about 5.15pm on Friday.

One is leaning over and will be emptied.

A QR National spokesman said there had been no chemical leak and the cause of the derailment was still being investigated.

“There is no major issues … this was a low level derailment … we are working with firies,” the spokesman said

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said fire crews would begin decanting the chemical from the wagons once QR National investigations were complete.

“When that process begins we may have to look at putting in evacuation zones around the stations in case of a leak, to consider all scenarios,” the spokeswoman said.

“We are probably looking at three days to get that done because it is a complicated process.”

Train Derailment Near Powhatan Dumps Coal

    October 28, 2011

POWHATAN POINT - A bad section of rail caused several train cars loaded with coal to derail Wednesday night at the southern end of Powhatan Point.

Coal littered the Ohio River bank on Thursday after some of the derailed cars tipped and lost their loads.

A worker at the site who declined to give his name said the derailment happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday. Crews expected to have the section of track repaired late Thursday with plans to have rail traffic running again today.

The coal that was spilled was set to be removed and cleaned up.

Workers from Norfolk Southern Railroad, which transports coal for Murray Energy, were called to the scene shortly after the derailment. They were able to remove the cars from the track and worked during the night Wednesday and all day Thursday to repair the track.

Train off track adds to concern

TASMANIA'S troubled rail network suffered another derailment last night.

TasRail said nine wagons derailed from the back end of a freight train that was travelling on the North-South line about 5.30pm.

The train was heading north when it was derailed near Campania.

TasRail said there was little damage to the freight consignment because all wagons derailed in an upright position. No one was injured in the incident.

The rest of the train was undamaged and was expected to continue its journey to Burnie last night with the remaining 15 wagons intact.

Six derailments have occurred since July last year.

TasRail said last night's derailment was the first for this financial year.

In 2006 10 wagons from a 35-wagon Burnie-Hobart train left the rails between Campania and Colebrook.

TasRail has notified customers about last night's incident and advised that there will be a delay to freight operations on the North-South Line.

TasRail crews will work throughout the weekend to recover the derailed wagons and to repair the track.

The line between Colebrook and Tea Tree is expected to remain closed until tomorrow evening.

The derailment was reported to the Rail Safety Regular, and will be subject to investigation.

Amtrak train derails in Palmer near Steaming Tenders Restaurant

PALMER- Police said an Amtrak train has derailed near Depot Street not far from the Steaming Tender Restaurant .

Police would not say what caused the derailment.

In an unrelated incident overnight, a train got stuck in Palmer with 48 people aboard, according to an Associated Press report.

Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham says the train from Chicago to Boston got stuck in Palmer about 10 p.m. Saturday. A rockslide caused by the snowstorm that slammed the Northeast was blocking the tracks.

Graham says the passengers had electricity and heat the whole time and got free food and drinks. Buses arrived about 11 a.m. Sunday to take them to destinations between Palmer and Boston. The Lakeshore Limited train had left Chicago on Friday.

The storm has forced Amtrak to suspend train service on several routes in the Northeast.

Derailment near Big Pasco spills methanol

    Tri-City Herald/Bob Brawdy
Damaged and leaking railroad tankers are scattered along the tracks Monday afternoon in a switching yard in the Big Pasco Industrial Park near Sacajawea Park Road. Forty-six BNSF Railway cars broke loose at the Pasco train hump yard and rolled into 31 cars and two engines earlier in the morning. Fire officials were concerned about a leaking tanker carrying methanol. No one was injured in the collision.

A half-mile-long runaway freight train with 46 freight cars uncoupled and rolled backward a couple of miles early Monday, ramming into an oncoming freight train near Big Pasco.

The 3:40 a.m. accident derailed two locomotives hooked in tandem on the second train that was pulling 31 freight cars and caused a tanker car to spill about 10,000 gallons of methanol.

No one was hurt in the crash, which derailed or overturned 10 cars, said Gus Melonas, BNSF Co. spokesman. The crash was on BNSF property, just north of Port of Pasco property.

Three railroad workers in the cab of the locomotive that took the brunt of the collision from the runaway cars managed to scramble away unharmed because other railroad employees radioed ahead to the cab crew to flee to safety.

Melonas said a faulty coupler is suspected of breaking loose on an 80-car train as it headed north toward the hump yard near Fourth Avenue north of downtown Pasco. It's not clear how fast the runaway cars were going.

It is about five miles between the hump yard and where the crash happened just west of East Road 40 at the far east end of Big Pasco. Melonas said exactly where the train separated is being investigated.

Chief Les Litzenberger with Franklin Fire District 3 said early reports indicated the train broke free about halfway between Big Pasco and the hump yard. That would be close to where the tracks cross Lewis Street.

Melonas said the two locomotives on the second train stayed upright, but the first three tanker cars behind them were knocked off the tracks and onto their sides, scattering their wheels and axles.

Liquid methanol began leaking from one of the 30,000-gallon cars, while the two others containing calcium chloride did not spill.

Seven other cars in the runaway train also left the tracks. Two contained corn syrup, two held ammonium nitrate in pellet form and two were carrying paper. One other car was empty, Melonas said.

About 75 people from a half-dozen fire dep

Investigators are looking into the cause of the incident, said Charles Seaton, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Following the collision, transit workers draped red tape blocking the entrance to the Ditmars Boulevard station, Seaton said. Service was suspended on both the N and Q lines between Ditmars Boulevard and Queens Plaza following the collision.

Commuters stymied by the service interruption headed to nearby M60 Manhattan-bound buses, only to find the buses filled to capacity, law enforcement sources said. A mad rush ensued, with commuters trying to board the packed buses.

Transit workers tried to keep order, turning away most of the harried commuters – some of whom headed to the street, scrambling to hail cabs.

Shuttle buses were brought to the subway entrance at about 8 a.m. to accommodate stranded straphangers.

The two trains involved in the crash were determined fully functional at about 1 p.m. and service was restored by 1:10 p.m., Seaton said.

There were no reported injuries in the collision or the resulting chaos.

Breaking News: Neighborhood evacuated after train derailment

    By: Web Staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Crews remain on the scene of a train derailment that forced the evacuation of dozens of homes in Syracuse.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday along the railroad tracks that run between Route 81 and Berwyn Avenue.

Police said two cars on a CSX train overturned, and one was carrying about 18,000 gallons of propane.

No injuries have been reported in the derailment, but officials are keeping a close eye on the propane tank.

Terry Williams of the Syracuse Fire Department said, "Right now the tank rolled off the wheels onto its roof. We have some monitoring equipment set up around it. Right now we don't have any leaks so we're just going to continue monitoring it, expand our evacuation zone and wait for the cleanup company to get here."

Route 81 has been shut down in both directions from the Route 481 interchange to the 690 interchange. Eastbound Colvin Street is also closed.

Officials expect those closures to last at least through the start of Friday night’s SU football game and potentially overnight or even through Saturday since cranes will need to be brought in to right the cars.

Propane tanker derails; I-81 shut down, neighborhoods evacuated

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse Police have evacuated homes on the city's South Side and shut down a portion of I-81 after two tankers at the end of a CSX train - including one carrying propane - rolled off a set of tracks.

Route 81 - both northbound and southbound - is shut down from the split with 481 at Rock Cut Road to the 690 split in East Syracuse.

According to Onondaga County 911 dispatchers, the tanks have not released any gas. However, as a precaution, Syracuse Police are evacuating Berwyn Avenue and Benedict Avenue neighborhoods.

50 to 60 displaced neighbors are being sent to the Westcott Community Center.  They will not be allowed to return to their homes tonight.

Police are considering expanding the evacuation area to homes west of I-81.

Syracuse Police say the incident will likely present significant traffic problems since the stretch is the most traveled in the city.

Police say fans going to the SU football team's game against South Florida at 8 p.m. may encounter changes in the traffic pattern since the derailment occurred near the university.

NewsChannel 9 and 9WSYR.com will have more information as it becomes available.

Undercarriage fire disrupts Port Klang-Batu Caves commuter service

Posted on November 14, 2011, Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: A minor fire which broke out at the undercarriage of the Port Klang-Batu Caves commuter train caused service on the route to to be disrupted for a short while yesterday.

The fire department was alerted when the fire detected at 7.32am and it took firemen just 20 minutes to extinguish the flames.

KTM Berhad corporate communications unit senior manager  Mohd Fazil Ismail said passengers on the train were transferred to another for their safety and to facilitate extinguishing of the fire.

“There weren’t many passengers on board and this helped in making the transfer of the passengers a smooth process,” he told Bernama.

He said the affected train was towed to KTM’s depot and that all its commuter services returned to normal thereafter.

He added that investigations were underway to find out how the fire started.    Four KTM Intercity services were also disrupted following a locomotive derailment at 7.10am yesterday at KM704.50 (Kulai-Layang-Layang).

KTM said in a statement that the first train service affected was the ‘Ekspress Sinaran Timur’ (No.14) which was delayed from its original schedule and would continue the journey up to the Tumpat station.

“The second service was Shuttle (No.92) which was cancelled and the third, Ekspress Rakyat (No.2) from JB Sentral to Kuala Lumpur was also cancelled,” the statement said.

The fourth service that was affected was the ‘Senandung Timur’ (No.27) where the service was halted up to Kluang and the passengers transferred by Bus to the JB Sentral station, the statement said.

“The affected KTM train services were expected to resume fully at 3pm,” the statement said.

According to the statement, no loss of life was reported following the derailment and repair works were being carried out.

Path train service between New York and New Jersey skidded to a halt for several hours last night after a fire caused all power to track signals to be lost.

The damaging blaze was an electrical fire that broke out at about 8 p.m. in an equipment closet at the station at Journal Square in Jersey City, a Port Authority spokesperson said.

Although power to the tracks was not affected, power was lost to all of the signals that control train movements throughout the system.

Three tanker cars derail in Woods Cross

WOODS CROSS -- Officials are investigating why three tanker cars derailed at Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions Inc. on Wednesday afternoon.

South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jim Rampton said the train derailment happened on the company's property at about 1100 West and 1750 South, not on the main rail.

The tanker cars, which are full of asphalt, were tipped at a 45-degree angle.

He said it is unclear if the tankers tipped while being brought in or while being pushed out of the area.

"The asphalt has hardened, and in order to get the product out, they will need to steam the tankers, offload the product and then get the tankers back on the track," Rampton said.

He said there is no public safety issue at this time.

His crews were called to the scene for a short time as a precaution.

Train derailment backs up traffic in Marathon, Alpine

A train derailment in Brewster County early Monday morning delayed train traffic until about 9:30 p.m. officials with Union Pacific Railroad report.

The derailment occurred at 6:20 a.m. Monday when a rail car loaded with pipe on a train going from Los Angeles, Calif. to Houston derailed about 10 miles west of Longfellow about five miles from the Brewster County line. UP officials said there were no injuries as a result of the derailment.

Train traffic was backed up around Alpine and Marathon following the derailment.

A total of 12 trains were delayed as a result of the derailment, but the line was opened to train traffic at about 9:30 p.m. said Mark Davis, a spokesman for Union Pacific.

Because of the rural location UP crews brought equipment from San Antonio so they could remove the pipe from the derailed car.

“Crews worked yesterday to place the derailed car of pipe back on the track and repair some track damaged as a result of the derailment,” Davis said.

Crews are currently working to reposition the pipe on two rail cars that shifted as the result of the derailment, Davis said.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

20 injured as train derails in Kashmir

    Additional information.

SRINAGAR/ROURKELA, 23 NOV: At least 20 people were injured today when a train from Qazigund to Srinagar derailed in Kulgam district, the first such incident since train services were launched in Kashmir Valley in 2008.
The engine and two bogies of the train derailed at Sedura village, 55 km from here, as the driver overshot the intended station stop by nearly 200 metres, officials said. They said 20 people sustained minor injuries in the mishap. “All the injured persons were evacuated to a hospital,” a senior police official in Kulgam said.
A team of Railway officials has rushed to the spot to investigate the cause of the mishap. “We are heading to the scene of the accident. The cause of derailment will be known only after the investigations are complete,” Chief Area Manager, Northern Railways, Mr Opender Singh said.
Official sources said preliminary investigations have found that there was some problem with the brakes of the train. The first train service was introduced in the Valley in October, 2008.
Today's mishap is the third involving railways since yesterday. Seven persons were killed when two coaches of the Doon Express caught fire in Jharkhand yesterday.                                                                             In another incident four passengers were injured today when the Howrah-bound Koraput-Howrah Express collided with a goods train at Jharsuguda Station in Odisha. The accident has been attributed to "signal overshooting" as both the trains started moving in the same direction, though signal was given for one to depart the station in the Chakradharpur division, about 110 km from here, the deputy superintendent of police for Government Reserve Police at Jharsuguda, Mr MK Mahato said.

    The burning train

Three rail accidents over the last two days serve as yet another reminder of poor rail safety standards. The fire in the Howrah-Dehradun Express, the collision of a goods train with Koraput-Howrah Express and the derailment of the Qazigund-Srinagar-Baramulla train all follow a recurring pattern. Since the start of the year there were fires in both the prestigious Mumbai-Delhi and the Delhi-Patna Rajdhani Express trains. The worst mishaps happened following the derailment of the Kalka Mail, which killed 70 people, and the collision between the Chennai suburban train and the Arakonam-Katpadi passenger train, which left another 10 people dead. While the Railways claims that the number of serious accidents has fallen from 100 in 2009-10 to 93 in 2010-11, the number of people killed in accidents has increased from 68 to 250 in the same period.

The actual reasons for the recent accidents will be known - hopefully - after the reports of the Commissioner of Railway Safety are filed. But the Railways can only blame itself for its lack of investment in safety. The fire and smoke detection system was introduced in 20 trains just a year back as a pilot project. Similarly, anti-collision devices, introduced more than a decade back, are still only available in about eight railway zones. A recent CAG audit noted that the number of safety personnel was well below required norms in all 16 zones. This has almost certainly contributed to the frequency of accidents. The Railways needs to take the safety and security of its passengers far more seriously than it does now.

3 Indian Train Incidents in 24 Hours

Indian Railways TrainIndia has been hit with three train incidents in less than 24 hours, and these have resulted in a total of at least seven people being killed and over 35 injured. The first tragedy happened on Tuesday with the Howrah-Dehradun Express catching fire in Jharkhand. The other two happened early on Wednesday – a train derailment in Anantnag, Kashmir and a two-train collision in Odisha.

In the Jharkhand train fire on Tuesday, seven people were confirmed dead – including two children and one Australian – and more than 12 injured after the B1 and B2 coaches caught fire at full occupancy. Dhanbad and Giridih firefighters reported to the scene and spend five hours extinguishing the blaze, which burned the coaches beyond recognition.

Dhanbad division railway superintendent of police PK Srivastav said that they are still investigating the accident. It appears that all seven passengers killed in the fire were on the B1 coach, which is believed to have caught fire first while carrying 72 passengers. The burned coaches have been detached from the train and transferred to Gomoh railway station so that the rest of the train could continue to its destination.

One passenger reported that the fire started after someone turned off the air-conditioner and switched on the heat. Railway protection force commandant Sashi Kumar says the incident happened around 2:35 in the morning, when most of the passengers were sleeping.

In the Kashmir derailment on Wednesday, at least 20 people were injured. The incident happened about 70km from Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir. A government official said that three bogeys and an engine derailed due to some technical snag. The injured passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to a disaster management official, and none of them are said to have been seriously hurt.

Senior railway officials reported to the scene to begin an investigation into what caused the incident. Indian railway technical teams were at the spot to return the bogeys to the track. They said that they didn’t yet know what caused the accident, but a preliminary probe has indicated a problem with the train’s brakes. A senior government official has requested that an enquiry be conducted and a full report be submitted to the local government.

In the Odisha collision, four passengers were injured when the Koraput-Howrah Express crashed into a goods train at Jharsuguda Station. The accident happened due to the overshooting of signals as both of the vehicles moved in the same direction. GRP DSP at Jharsuguda, MK Mahato, said that one of the trains was signalled to depart the station. Three of the injured were treated at the scene, and the other was admitted to a hospital.

South Eastern Railways said that, at first glance, the Koraput-Howrah Express driver is believed to have violated the starter signal. This resulted in the collision with a goods train that began from an adjacent line. An inquiry will be conducted into the accident, according to the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

    Northeast monsoon hits normal life

Railway officials remove a huge tree that fell on the railway track at Perungulathur in Chennai. Suburban train services were affected for nearly an hour - DC

Life was thrown out of gear in most parts of Tamil Nadu as the rain battered the state, particularly in coastal districts like Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chennai besides parts of interior Perambalur.

However, the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease gradually in the northern districts from Sunday evening and a couple of days later in south TN.

According to the regional meteorological department, a sharp rise in the rainfall level was witnessed with the state receiving 5.5 cm rainfall overall, which is around 1,200 times more than the day’s (Saturday) average.

Even the cumulative total of the state was 23 per cent more than average rainfall for the northeast monsoon season, which starts from October first week.

Deputy director of regional met department, Mr Y.E.A. Raj told Deccan Chronicle said that large number of weather stations recorded around 12.5 cm rainfall.

Clear sky could be expected by Sunday evening or Monday morning. However, the southern districts will continue to receive sharp spells of rain and gradually ease around November 30 as the depression off the coast of Thiruvanthapuram is expected to move northwest, affecting the islands on Arabian sea, Mr Raj pointed out.

Areas like Mangadu, Ka-rayanchavadi and Porur besides low-lying areas in the city were worst hit with residents complaining about heavy flooding and inundation.

Besides flooding, the sharp spell of rains uprooted several trees like a huge tamarind tree on the highway that fell across the rail tracks at Perungulathur, leaving EMU movement on Tambaram-Chengalpet stretch affected for over an hour.

Vehicle movement was also deeply affected with the commuters moving in snail’s pace due to wat-erlogged and damaged roads.

Likewise, derailment of an engine at Villupuram plus the heavy downpour delayed all Chennai bound trains by over couple of hours this morning. Likewise, in the delta region, the paddy fields were inundated, leaving farmers high and dry.

    V/Line off the rails

    28 Nov, 2011 01:00 AM
A V/LINE train bound for the Border derailed in Melbourne on Saturday night, leaving disoriented passengers in smoke-filled carriages.

The 135 passengers had to clamber down a ladder from the carriages.

An investigation is under way as to how the 6.01pm return train to Albury left the tracks only 10 metres from West Footscray station.

The line was closed yesterday until late afternoon to fix the track and clear the derailed carriages, with last night’s 6.01pm service to Albury expected to operate under speed restrictions.

It comes just three months after an interstate XPT train derailed on the Melbourne suburban network.

A mudhole was blamed for that 150-passenger train derailing near Coolaroo, about 20 kilometres from Southern Cross station.

Now one train down, V/Line has cancelled today’s 6.35am service from Albury to Southern Cross and the 12pm service from Southern Cross to Albury.

V/Line spokeswoman Clare Steele said although the train was travelling about 60km/h when it derailed, no one was injured.

“There was no injuries to staff or passengers but they would have felt a jolt,” she said.

“Passengers would have been about an hour late home, which we apologise for.”

Passenger Lyn McErvale, of Yarrawonga, said the jolting and the swaying of the derailed carriages, and the smoke, left some passengers in shock.

She said passengers had to walk up a slippery embankment to get to buses.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation’s Brian Dale said an investigation would be carried out by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

He said the derailment had chopped up some of the track, which had been repaired by yesterday afternoon.

“Our job is to get the track back running as fast as possible and we are working with V/Line to recommence the passenger services,” he said.

Passengers use a ladder top climb down from the derailed train, then climb the embankment.

Two locos of freight train derailed on K-K Line

    PTI | 05:11 PM,Nov 27,2011

Visakhapatnam (AP), Nov 27 (PTI) Rail traffic between Visakhaptnam railway station in Andhra Pradesh and Kirandul railway station in Chhattisgarh was disrupted following derailment of two locos of a goods train in wee hours today due to suspected sabotage by Maoists, official sources said. The incident occurred due to removal of fish plates, allegedly by suspected ultras on K-K Line (Kothavalasa-Kirandul Line) under the Waltair Line of the East Coast Railway, they said. According to sources, the role of naxals is suspected owing to the encounter of prominent Maoist leader Molajula Koteswar Rao, alias Kishenji, who was killed in a gunfight with security forces at Burisole jungle in West Midnapore district of West Bengal on November 24. Kishenji was cremated at his native Peddapalli in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. Top railway officials, including Additional Divisional Railway Manager P Madhusudhanra Rao, visited the spot to supervise the track restoration works. The rail services on the route are likely to be resumed by the evening, sources added. PTI CORR NSK
