Train derailments

Spain Experiences its Worst Train Accident in 40 Years

An increase in train derailments was one of the first symptoms of the approach of Planet X to become noticeable, being expressed even before Planet X entered the inner solar system in 2003.

Planet X was described as affecting the Earth from afar, like tugging on the edge of a spider web where the effects are felt elsewhere on the web; in this way there has been an increase in earthquakes and unpredictable weather going back years, even before Planet X entered the solar system, due to the increased swirling of the Earth’s core.

It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail.

The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur.

This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift.

In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Five killed, dozens injured when tram derails in Brazil

    28 August 2011

RIO DE JANEIRO (BNO NEWS) -- At least five people were killed on Saturday and 54 others were wounded when a tram derailed in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Fabio Couri, the commander of the district fire department, said four people died at the scene of the accident, including the driver. One of the passengers who were seriously injured later succumbed to injuries at an area hospital, raising the total death toll to five.

Health officials said among the injured are five tourists, including three French, one Portuguese and one British citizen. At least eight patients have undergone orthopedic surgeries due to several fractures, the officials added.

Rio's Secretary of Transportation, Julio Lopes, visited the scene of the accident, which he said could hurt tourism in the city. Lopes said the tram service in the district will be suspended until the cause of the accident is determined.

According to a preliminary investigation, poor maintenance and overloading may have caused the derailment. At the time of the accident, the tram was carrying 62 passengers while the maximum allowed is 40.

On Sunday afternoon, residents of Santa Teresa demonstrated near the crash site while flowers were left to mourn the victims. Sunday's accident is not the country's first tram accident this year. In June, a French tourist died after falling from a tram as it was crossing a bridge.

21 injured when passenger train hits construction equipment

Engines from Amtrak’s No. 6 California Zephyr route derailed and toppled to their side after striking a crane being used to demolish an aging grain elevator at Doane, located between Benkelman and Parks. EMTs, firefighters and law enforcement officers from Wauneta, Palisade and Imperial were among the 200 responders assisting after the accident.

Emergency responders from Wauneta, Palisade and Imperial joined others from across southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado in responding to what many feared would be a grim scenario of disastrous proportion.

Emergency medical technicians, firefighters and other first responders braced themselves for a situation they had been warned could involve dozens of serious injuries in a train/vehicle accident and subsequent derailment of the Amtrak passenger train in the sparsely populated reaches of far southwest Nebraska.

Thankfully, when they arrived at the scene, they found crew members calmly helping most passengers climb down from the train.

The collision occurred when an Amtrak train en route from California to Chicago struck a piece of construction equipment being used on a demolition project west of Benkelman in rural Dundy County Friday morning, forcing two locomotives and several cars off the rails but causing no critical injuries, officials said.

The train, running Amtrak’s California Zephyr route from Emeryville, Calif., to Chicago, had 175 passengers and 17 crew members on board when it struck the crane shortly before 8 a.m. at an old railway loading stop called Doane.

An old tin-covered wooden elevator was being torn down at the site, with the crane used in the dismantling process.

The two locomotives left the tracks and tipped over, but the derailed passenger cars did not topple, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said. The other cars on the 10-car train remained on the tracks.

Magliari said the train collided with the crane. “Our understanding is a portion of a crane working on a demolition project near the tracks became an obstruction to us as our train approached, either across the tracks or on laying on the tracks, obstructing the path of the train,” he noted.

Officials reported that 21 people were injured in the incident and transported by ambulance to area hospitals. Those hurt in the crash were taken to hospitals in Benkelman, Imperial and Wray, Colo., where most were treated for back, shoulder and neck injuries.

None of the injuries were critical, and most of the injured had been released by Friday evening, said Dundy County emergency director Elaine Frasier.

“We all felt very fortunate that no one was critically injured,” added Frasier.

Over the course of the morning Friday the other passengers were shuttled by school buses to Benkelman’s Dundy County-Stratton High School where they were picked up later that afternoon by private buses provided by Amtrak or in vans and taxis hired by passengers.

In the meantime school staff, community members and area volunteers hosted the stranded passengers at the school, passing out bottled water and grilling hamburgers and hotdogs on gas grills outside the school’s commons area as the commun

    Sequence of events
The train, which was running on Amtrak’s California Zephyr route from Emeryville, Calif., to Chicago, was reportedly running about eight hours behind schedule when it derailed west of Benkelman. The train was also involved in an accident near Reno, Nev.last Thursday when it collided with an SUV that was left high centered on the railroad tracks.
Meanwhile, on Friday morning Gerald Shatler, owner of G & S Recycling, and two of his employees were continuing their work of dismantling the old Doane Elevator buildings located about five miles west of Benkelman.  The three were using a truck-mounted crane that Shatler had contracted for the job.
One man was in the cab, operating the crane. Shatler and the other man were in the bucket on the end of the crane. They were up on the crane working on the side of the elevator and needed to get to the other corner of the structure. However, the crane was too close to the building.
The truck-mounted crane  was supported by four outriggers that were extended to the ground. To get to the other side of the structure, they swung the boom o

    Train derails near downtown Lancaster

LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) - Police in Lancaster are on the scene of a train derailment near the downtown area of the city.

According to railway officials, a train derailed along the Lancaster and Chester Railway between Main Street and Market Street just after noon on Friday.

Officials say three cars of the cargo train derailed from the tracks, but declined to say what was in the cars.

The derailment blocked a section of Market Street and side roads around Main Street on Friday afternoon. Early reports indicate that no one was injured in the derailment.

This section of train tracks has presented problems in the past four years for the city of Lancaster.

In August 2010, a train jumped the tracks in the same area, blocking Main, Market and 15th streets for several hours.

A train also derailed and crashed into the Buy-Rite Discount Beverage in February 2007.  Two people were inside the store when the cars came crashing through, one of those people was airlifted to the hospital.

Railroad officials say the train's engineers accidentally shoved the train's cars about 30 feet off the track while trying to add a rail car to the line. The store was demolished.

    UP train derails near Emmett

    Passenger train derails in Hedmark

    September 5, 2011

A passenger train heading from the historic mining town of Røros to Hamar derailed Monday morning, not far from the scene of a fatal train accident on the same line in Hedmark County 11 years ago. This time, though, passengers escaped death, and injuries were believed to be relatively minor.

Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported that emergency crews had to chop down trees to get to the scene of the accident, which occurred just before 7am between Koppang and Rena in the valley of Østerdalen.

    Fractures, neck and back injuries
There were 31 people on board the three-car train, including passengers and crew. Rescue workers said seven were injured and suffering from fractures, neck and back pain. An air ambulance was sent to the scene near Opphus and the injured were being taken to hospital in Elverum. Operations leader Wenche Gusjås told NRK that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The location of the accident meant it took time for police to reach the site, but “all available resources” were being put into the rescue efforts, according to a press release from the police.

Railway NSB was also awaiting more details of the derailment and said it was too early to establish its cause. Gusjås, however, told NRK that heavy rain in the area had washed away the ground under the rails. “The train is lying on its side,” she told NRK.

Dag Svinsås of state railroad Jernbaneverket, which is responsible for railroad infrastructure while NSB is responsible for operations, said crews had been inspecting various stretches of tracks because of the heavy rain. “At the exact site of this derailing, we have not had visitations,” he told news website Adressa.no.

    ‘Confusing and chaotic’
One passenger, Jannika Grimbe, said on NRK’s national radio news broadcast that she was dozing in her seat when she was abruptly awakened by a lurch and felt the train leave the track. “Then everything was very confusing and chaotic on board the train for awhile,” she said. “Folks were yelling and several were in pain.”

She said the train was leaning to the left and several seats were jarred off their mountings. “People walked back and forth but also called home to say they were okay,” she said. “I tried to help as many as I could.”

The accident forced closure of the train line, known as Rørosbanen, which also has been disrupted earlier this summer by heavy rain and flooding. A collision on the same line farther south at Åsta in January 2000 killed 19 persons and injured many others.

    Train Derailments

If the Kiev trumpets are due to a stretch in the area, might this stretch of eastern Europe through to Asia that the Eurasian Plate endures have something to do with a train derailment in Poland? No cause evident, but rails to not just zig and zag suddenly without cause. Railroad lines are regularly checked, in fact, and well maintained. The Pole Shift ning has a blog of such derailments, and in addition to the stretch in the Ukraine and Poland, the eastern half of the US is a stretch zone experiencing many derailments just in this month of August, 2011, in places that the New Madrid adjustment will tear, in fact. Regularly checked rail lines, but derailments without apparent cause. In addition, two Chicago buildings collapsed on the same day. Chicago is very much in a stretch zone, impacted by the Seaway pulling apart. Same day, same location - boom. Per the Zetas, not a coincidence.

ZetaTalk Prediction 12/14/2005: Confused investigators look for reasons for disasters that have their etiology in Earth quietly pulled apart, rock flakes pulled away, rather than pressed together, so that no quakes occur. The stretch zone is that sinking feeling, where support weakens, the ground sinks, and silently so. As there is no other explanation for the effect on the stretch zone, lacking any earthquakes to blame, and as these stretch zone accidents will continue to emerge, and with ferocity, this is a certain clue to those on the fence, that the influence of Planet X is the cause.

Amtrak passenger trains between Denver and Chicago won’t be available until later this month.

Track was damaged by floods near Omaha as well as a derailment on the other end of the state near Benkleman.

Amtrak stops in Nebraska in McCook, Holdrege, Hastings, Lincoln and Omaha.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company owns the track, and is making repairs to “massive flood damage near Omaha that had led to a detour route, resulting in lengthy Amtrak delays across Nebraska and Iowa,” Amtrack officials said Sept. 1.

Amtrak also suspended the Denver-Chicago California Zephyr on Aug. 26, after the boom of a construction crane hung above the tracks near a grain elevator and caused two Amtrak train locomotives to derail near Benkelman.

After that wreck, daily passenger service from San Francisco-Denver was also suspended for a week, but resumed during the Labor Day weekend. Eastbound from Emeryville, Calif. resumed on Sept. 3, and westbound from Denver resumed Sept. 4.

AHMEDABAD: Vehicular traffic movement was disrupted early in the morning on Wednesday after six wagons of a goods train carrying coal derailed at the Sabarmati Yard.

The incident took place at 4.10 am on Wednesday. However, vehicular traffic was disrupted till 5.30 am. Officials said that the six wagon were detached from the train to allow movement of the traffic.

Senior officials rushed to the spot. After a long operation, all the six wagons were brought back on the track. Officials said that an inquiry has been ordered to find out the cause of the accident.

CHITHERI: Nine persons were killed and 100 others injured when a speeding passenger train rammed into a stationary train here, leading to derailment of five coaches.

The Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train rammed into the Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger from behind as it was waiting for a signal at Chitheri station, about 90 kms from Chennai, around 9.40pm on Tuesday night, police and railway officials said.

Of the nine killed, bodies of seven have been recovered and efforts were on to retrieve the other two buried under the mangled bogies, IG North Zone Shailendra Babu said.

He said nearly 100 people including the driver of the MEMU train were injured and of them 83 were admitted to nearby Arakkonam Government hospital. Later, 25 injured were

shifted to Chennai for treatment, he said, adding "all of them are out of danger".

Southern Railway general manager Deepak Krishnan said the MEMU driver had apparently ignored the signal and speed restrictions.

The Arakonam-Katpadi passenger was waiting for the signal. Being an automatic signalling territory, trains move one after another in this section, he said.

"Normally the previous signal would be danger (red). But apparently the MEMU train driver has not adhered to the signal," he said.

Officials said the last bogie of the stationary passenger train bore the brunt under the impact of the collision.

This is the third major accident in two months. On July 10, 70 people were killed when the Howrah-Kalka Mail derailed near Kanpur and three weeks later some coaches of Guwahati -Bangalore Express derailed in West Bengal's Malda district and were hit by another train leaving three dead.

The impact of the collision could be gauged from the heap of mangled metal and derailed bogies which the rescue workers are trying to clear.

Personnel of Tamil Nadu Commando police, special police and National Disaster Response Force besides Naval personnel from the nearby INS Rajali base have been deployed for rescue and relief works, which were initially hampered by heavy rains and poor light.

Passengers' bags and other belongings and metal parts of the train were seen strewn around the site which become slushy because of heavy overnight rains.

The accident disrupted running of several trains to Coimbatore and Bangalore in the Chennai-Katpadi section and both the up and down track were expected to be restored by around 6 PM today, they said.

Tamil Nadu health minister Dr V S Vijay visited the accident spot last night along with district officials and reviewed the relief measures

San Jose: VTA train in minor derailment in downtown

In what officials describe as an "unusual incident," wheels on a Valley Transportation Authority light rail train went off the tracks early this morning in downtown San Jose.

None of the six passengers riding on the southbound train were injured, according to VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress.

The train was heading south on the Alum Rock/Santa Teresa line went it went off the tracks just north of the Children's Discovery Museum platform at about 2 a.m., Childress said. Because it was the last passenger train of the night, there were no impacts to service.

VTA officials sent a relay train to pick up the stranded six passengers and take them to their stations.

VTA workers needed about 21/2 hours to get the train back on track and towed to the yard.

Today crews are checking the rails where the train went off the tracks and making minor repairs. Crews are also checking out the train to try and determine why the derailment occurred.

Several cars derailed in Guthrie, Ky. overnight near the Robertson County line.

A train derailed early Thursday morning near Robertson County in the city of Guthrie, Ky., shutting down train traffic in the area.

Approximately 10-20 cars derailed from a 64-car train at approximately 5:30 a.m. near Adams, according to Tim Pulley of the Todd County Emergency Management.

Pulley said several of the train cars were folded up “accordion style.”

“I’ve seen cars off the tracks before, but this is the first time I have ever seen this accordion effect,” Pulley said.

The train was traveling southbound hauling freight at the time of the derailment. The train was not hauling hazardous materials and no one was injured in the incident, Pulley said.

The track was severely damaged in the derailment. All train traffic is halted through the area, according to Pulley.

The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time.

    Commuter chaos as train derails

    16 Sep, 2011 09:10 AM

There are major delays in both directions on the Illawarra, South Coast and Eastern Suburbs lines this morning.

The network is in chaos after a private freight train derailed near Tempe.

Commuters should expect delays of at least 40 minutes, with the possibility of reduced service frequency and longer journey times.

A RailCorp spokesman said it appears the train derailed at around 3.45 am between Tempe and Arncliffe.

‘‘Evidence suggests a wagon derailed and caused damage to the track and point switches,’’ the spokesman said.

‘‘The train appears to have managed to re-rail itself when it came to a stop at Tempe.’’

RailCorp staff and civil engineers are on site inspecting the damage and working to repair the track

    Train derails in Telford

A load of rubber pellets needed some help to bounce back after the railroad car in which they were being carried derailed Thursday afternoon in Telford.

The train derailed a little before reaching Washington Avenue at East Broad Street, Telford Borough Police Sgt. James Minninger said.

“The train crew tried to pull the car forward and re-right the car and get it back on track,” Minninger said.

They only got as far as Washington Avenue before getting stuck.

“It did not want to go forward or back,” Minninger said. “Here it sat.”

Repair crews were called in about 1:30 p.m., about an hour after the derailment, he said.

The crews worked through the afternoon before getting the train back on track about 5:30 p.m.

Neighbor Randy Pforter, who arrived home in time to see the last couple hours of the work, said the train rocked and appeared to almost fall at one point during efforts to get it back on track.

“A heavy rail car like that, you’re using wooden blocks instead of getting a crane in here of some type,” Pforter said as he watched the work continue. “It’s ridiculous. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

The derailed train included an engine marked East Penn Railways 3153 and a freight car.

The freight car was carrying rubber pellets for manufacturing, Minninger said. The pellets were not a hazardous substance and there was no danger of leaks, he said.

    An interesting article...

    Officials: Train derailment frequency ‘troublesome’

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas—The frequency at which cargo trains roll off tracks and overturn along a stretch of highway from Hitchcock to Santa Fe has one official concerned.

The latest derailment involving BNSF Railway track happened about 8 p.m. Tuesday and prompted the brief, precautionary evacuation of 14 residents from Freddiesville. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters and law enforcement officers ordered the roughly two-hour evacuation as a precaution until the railway could ascertain the nature of an Ethanol leak, Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Scott said.

Tuesday’s derailment marked the second one this year on the BNSF track between Santa Fe and Hitchcock and the fourth since 2009.

”We’re all concerned about it,” said Santa Fe Mayor Ralph Stenzel. “With so many derailments in such a short amount of time, it’s troublesome. There must be something wrong.  If it’s not the speed, it must be with the tracks.”

Stenzel said the crashes started happening after trains began moving 55 mph instead of 45 mph.  (NONSENSE)

The track passes in front of a school and through other small communities.

“Up until a few years ago we haven’t had any derailments,” said Stanzel, worried that someone’s eventually going to get hurt.

The company that maintains the rails says the latest crash is under investigation. BNSF also says crews inspect the rails routinely.

Meanwhile, area leaders say they will keep asking questions until they figure out what’s causing the trouble on the tracks.

Crews work to repair tracks after train derailment in Erie (Updated: 2:25 p.m.)

CSX crews were working today to repair train tracks after Saturday's derailment in downtown Erie.

No word was available yet on what caused seven of the eastbound freight train's cars to leave the tracks just south of 14th Street near State Street. Local and corporate CSX officials couldn't be reached for comment on what happened Saturday or today's repairs.

No one was injured in the derailment, which happened Saturday at about 1:20 p.m.

Crews today were clearing debris and putting down new tracks this afternoon between State and Peach streets.

Trains were moving today on the northernmost set of tracks in that area while crews worked on a center set that had been damaged.

Several derailed cars remained near trees on the north side of the tracks.

One of the cars that left the tracks was a tanker carrying propane but it wasn't believed to be leaking and no evacuation was ordered.

Derailed train causes road closure in Northeast Austin

A derailed Capital Metro train near the intersection of Daffan Lane and Johnny Morris Road in Northeast Austin will have westbound Daffan Lane closed for another couple hours, authorities said.

Capital Metro spokesman Adam Shaivitz said the derailment was, “Not something I would describe as major.”

“It’s not a situation with cars on their sides, just off the track,” Shaivitz said.

The “nine or 10” empty rail cars that derailed around 6:30 p.m. Friday were moving Westbound in an area Shaivitz said trains do not usually exceed 10 mph.

Shaivitz said Capital Metro has brought in a re-railing crew and it’s possible the whole situation would not be cleaned up until the early morning hours. Any rail cars in blocking traffic would likely be cleared within a couple hours, he said.

He was not able to say why the train derailed, but said crews will inspect the tracks to determine

whether they could have caused the derailment.

    Derailment may imperil residents

    Authorities close road near Ruston

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Office evacuated an area in the vicinity of U.S. 80 near Sims Road in Lincoln Parish because of the derailment of a Kansas City Southern train.

Officials said Sunday night residents were being asked to leave as a precaution until law enforcement can determine what's in the derailed cars.

U.S. 80 near Sims Road is closed.

Officials said the derailment was first reported about 7 p.m.

State Police said around 8:30 p.m. they had no reports of injuries.

The derailment is between Choudrant and Ruston.

In November 2007 many residents in the area were evacuated and several roads closed when 11 railcars of a westbound Kansas City Southern train left the track just west of a trestle near Sims Road in Lincoln Parish.

Among the derailed cars were five tankers carrying butadiene, a highly flammable, butane-like substance.

There's been a couple of these incidents where trains barrel in to cars due to lights or barriers not working.  We're going to see alot more of this because people just don't pay attention.  They expect lights to flash and bells to ring and barriers to come down.  Pay attention.....and look both ways before crossing......like your momma taught you.  :)

Near-miss at Ufton rail crash site to be investigated

    September 20, 2011

An investigation into a near miss at the Uften Nervet level crossing - the same crossing where a derailment in 2004 caused the deaths of seven people - happened earlier this month has been launched.

The barriers stopping traffic from driving over the line while trains are approaching failed to come down as the 11.13am train from London Paddington to Bedwyn crossed at 12.12pm on Sunday, September 4.

A car approaching the crossing, which is between Theale and Aldermaston, had slam on its brakes to avoid a collision with the train.

Now the Rail Accident Investigation Branch is investigating the incident to see what went wrong and how to make sure a serious accident does not happen.

An RAID spokesman said: "The RAIB's preliminary investigation found that the level crossing was being controlled locally at the time of the incident. The person controlling the crossing had not received any instruction to lower the barriers before the train arrived."

The near miss happened after that stretch of the line had been closed overnight for engineering works. One of the lines had been reopened and was being used for trains in both directions.

The spokesman added: "The RAIB investigation will include an examination of the arrangements for re-opening the railway to normal train services - particularly the workload on signallers and the arrangements for operating trains in both directions on the same line.

"It will also examine staff competence and fitness."

The incident happened on the same stretch of track where a collision with a car caused the derailment of a train from Paddington to Plymouth in 2004 which killed seven people and left 37 others with serious injuries.

    Shanghai Subway Accident Injures Hundreds

SHANGHAI — Hundreds of people were injured Tuesday when a subway train slammed into the rear of another train in a sprawling transit line that had opened just last year in Shanghai. The accident cast new scrutiny on the blighted safety record of China’s rapidly modernizing mass transit rail systems.

An injured rider was evacuated from the subway.

The state-run news media reported that 262 people were injured during the afternoon accident in the Shanghai Metro system. Xinhua, the official news agency, said that equipment failure was believed to be responsible and that the accident was under investigation.

There were no deaths reported, but images from the crash site posted on blogs and social networking sites showed some people bloodied and badly injured.

The accident came just two months after a deadly crash involving two trains on China’s high-speed rail network for which officials have blamed bad weather and a signal failure. The July 23 crash in the eastern city of Wenzhou killed 40 people and injured nearly 200 others.

The Wenzhou accident unleashed harsh public criticism of the nation’s high-speed rail program amid concern that the government has not ensured its safety. Since then, the government has slowed the speed of trains and announced a thorough review of its safety program.

The accident Tuesday in Shanghai occurred around 2:50 p.m. on Metro line 10, which stretches from downtown Shanghai to Hongqiao, one of the city’s main airports. The line also travels north, south, east and west in the vast city of 23 million. The accident took place near Yuyuan Gardens, a famous Shanghai tourist spot.

State news media reported that the line’s signal system failed around 2:10 p.m. and that subway trains were being directed by telephone before the accident occurred.

It was not the first time that the line has had problems.

Two months ago, a signaling problem on the same line caused one train to take a wrong turn; some passengers even reported that the train began to run backward, posing the threat of a collision, according to a report in the state-run news media.

The Shanghai Metro insisted that the equipment supp

Freight train derails, LA commuter line disrupted

    Published: Tuesday, Sep. 27, 2011 - 6:12 am

Two freight cars have rolled off Union Pacific tracks in the San Fernando Valley, forcing some Los Angeles rail commuters onto buses between Newhall and Burbank.

Police Lt. Robert Davis tells City News Service the freight cars rolled off the tracks at about 10 p.m. in the Pacoima area. The cars didn't topple over.

Because Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line shares that track, buses are shuttling passengers between the Newhall and Burbank stations.

It's unclear when the track will be repaired.

    Place: KISHANGANJ | Agency: PTI

One person was killed as at least 19 oil tankers of a goods train caught fire while two others derailed at Chanmana village between Aluabari and Mangurjaan railway stations in Bihar's Kishanganj district today.

ADG (Railways) SK Bhardwaj said the goods train was on its way to Tatanagar in Jharkhand from Rangapara in Assam when the oil tankers derailed and caught fire at Chamanna on the New Jalpaiguri-Katihar section of Northeast Frontier Railway.

One of the burning oil tankers trailed from the track and fell on a villager working in the fields nearby, who was charred to death. The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Moti ur Rehman.

Kishanganj District Magistrate Sandip Kumar Pudkalkatti said fire tenders were rushed in from neighbouring Islampur in West Bengal to fight the blaze.

He said 24 oil tankers were detached from the rear of the train and taken to Mangurjan station, while three others from the engine were taken to Aluabari.

While the exact reason of the derailment was yet to be known, Railway sources estimate the damage to be to the tune of Rs10 crore.

Official sources said fire tenders were also rushed in from Purnia and Kishanganj and engaged to control the fire.

Train services between New Jalpaiguri to Aluabari stations on the section have been affected, the sources added.
