We'll be seeing an uptick in unusual home and business gas explosions and I'm trying to locate specific ZT on the matter.  Below is a refresher for the many gas related news articles.

Fault lines, when adjusting, do not just rip apart one day during a dramatic earthquake. They most often creep. Laying gas lines along or across a fault line is asking for an accident of this sort. Fault lines are also seldom so clearly delineated that one can go a mile in this or that direction and avoid their action. Where a slip-slide fault such as the San Andreas will often leave a clear line on the surface, this is only the surface action, not what occurs in the rock layers on either side which can fracture for a long way to either side during any movement. The gas company, or the age of the pipes, will be faulted but in truth the finger should be pointed in many directions. The public, who insist on living at such a scenic spot, is to blame. Officials, who zoned for housing are to blame. The public utility company, for allowing gas lines in the area, is to blame. But this will change nothing, while man continues to live on the San Andreas, even as it awakens. EOZT

The danger from radon gas will not be increased as a result of the pole shift. Radon gas is emitted by rock containing uranium, which is degrading. In normal circumstances, where air can circulate, it is disbursed rapidly as is any methane created by decay of organic material. The danger from these gasses comes from confinement - being trapped in a mine, a basement, or beneath the permafrost. The dangers are well known. For methane, it is explosions. An accumulation of methane gas can be identified by the smell of rotten eggs, or as some have described it, dirty socks or cabbage soup. For radon gas the danger is lung cancer, from the continual exposure to the radioactive air. Radon gas is odorless, and cannot be detected except by specialized equipment not in the hands of the average person.

In that the pole shift, or the Earth changes preceding the pole shift, can fracture rock and release pockets of either gas, survivors should be cautious about huddling in bunkers. You are safer out in the open air, or in a trench you have dug that will allow the pole shift winds to pass over you, but nothing to fall on and crush you. The fact that both methane gas and radon gas can accumulate in the bunkers of the elite is one of the reasons we have stated that they have dug their own graves. EOZT

Anyone watching the news, for instance the news on the San Bruno explosion in a distribution line close to the San Andreas Fault line, knows that gas in any form is a danger. Oil and gas refineries explode when rigid piping cracks. Oil or gas wells explode when the ground around them moves. And the gas distribution lines running under cities are no exception. They likewise will explode. Gas lines, whether along the street or within a home, are rigid. In some cases automatic shutoff valves can limit the amount of gas available for an explosion by sensing a drop in pressure, but this is always after the fact. The explosion has already occurred. Utilizing gas on a planet prone to earthquakes was a mistake to begin with, but man never thinks of the consequences when striving for modern conveniences. We have advised turning off the gas at the street, though when the street explodes and your neighbor's homes are on fire you are not likely to escape the holocaust. A better alternative is to live in an area where gas is not available, as in your rural safe location where you will be doing a form of camping while gardening. A campfire at night, for cooking and washing and a bit of friendly light before bed. Nothing explosive. EOZT

SOZT Answer: It is no accident that the New Madrid fault lies under the Mississippi River near Memphis, as rivers form in lowlands created when land pulls apart, separating the rock fingers and weakening support for the land. Thus, the Ohio River bed also is an indication of where rock fingers will pull apart. Two adjustments in Kentucky, a day apart, are not an accident, but an indication of the speed at which the stretch zone is starting to adjust. Rail lines are frequently an early harbinger of such adjustments, as they run long distances, whereas structures within cities, such as tall buildings, take up relatively little space and have a small footprint. Our warning that imploding cities will be experienced, before the hour of the shift, are in this regard. Be warmed, it will not just be your rail lines and gas and water mains that will shatter and be pulled apart during the stretch. The foundations of your tall buildings will likewise be vulnerable.EOZT

West Virginia chemical plant explosion prompt warning for neighbors

Four people suffered injuries, a county official said, and the fire at the Chemours plant site was said to be under control.

    Dec. 9, 2020, 5:19 AM UTC / Updated Dec. 9, 2020, 12:11 PM UTC

West Virginia chemical plant erupted into flames after an explosion Tuesday night, leading to a 2-mile shelter in place order for area residents, officials said.

The explosion occurred at the Chemours plant in Belle just after 10 p.m., the Kanawha County Commission said. The company that owns the plant later said the fire at the site was under control.

Four people were injured, including two plant workers, Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said in an email.

The shelter-in-place directive was lifted early Wednesday after emergency personnel cleared the area, the commission said.

"There was a fire at one of the tenant companies at our site in Belle, West Virginia. Site responders worked to contain the fire," Chemours said in an email. It directed questions to another company that did not immediately return a voice message.

Aerial video posted to social media captured images of the fire burning.

Gov. Jim Justice tweeted that he has been briefed and that he and his wife were praying for the safety of everyone involved.

School closings for Wednesday were announced by the county.

Chemours formed as a spinoff from DuPont in 2015. The plant is along the Kanawha River in eastern Kanawha County.

Belle, with a population of around 1,100, is southeast of Charleston. The county commission said that the shelter-in-place order covers all of Belle, as well as the communities Marmet, Chesapeake and Chelyan.

Unexplained” Explosion Destroys World’s Second Largest Hydroxychloroquine Raw Material Factory

Well, 2020 is refusing to go out without a bang.

    Literally.

An “unexplained” explosion just destroyed the world’s second largest hydroxychloroquine raw material factory.

The materials from this factory are necessary to make HCQ… and now, the factory has been completely destroyed.

This news comes just days after the COVID-19 vaccine has been slowly distributed across the country.

HCQ was under controversy earlier in the year when President Trump praised its suspected benefits.

Many doctors and researchers have even gone on the record to defend HCQ.

However, there appeared to be a concerted effort to diminish HCQ’s effectiveness.

And now, an unexplained explosion has destroyed a factory that is ESSENTIAL to creating hydroxychloroquine.

    Seriously.

What are the odds of this?

There are no public reports of any prior incidents or safety issues at the factory.

This “unexplained” explosion has caught everyone off guard.

Of course, the mainstream media is refusing to cover the story.

Fortunately, the folks at the American Thinker has some interesting thoughts:

Prepare for supplies to tighten for the cheap, effective therapeutic treatment for early stage Covid-19 infection, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). Just as the medical establishment in the US is relaxing its absurd and lethal suppression of the cheap, generic drug, following President Trump’s endorsement of it early in the pandemic, HCQ’s continued availability may suffer. The world’s second largest pharmaceutical facility producing the precursors for HCQ has been destroyed by an explosion and fire.

A subsequent report indicates that one of the injured workers, a Filipino guest worker who suffered third degree burns over 90% of his body, has died. The explosion broke out around noon and set off subsequent explosions in volatile substances nearby.

The Taipei Times reports that company spokesmen state, “… it would take at least six months to rebuild the plant, as most production lines were damaged by the fire….”

    […]

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Given the explosive character of some of the ingredients, there may well be a perfectly innocent explanation for the fire. But a six-month delay in resuming production may delay HCQ supplies to early stage Covid-19 patients, who could otherwise treat their affliction with it, combined with zinc and an antibiotic like azithromycin.

I’ve been to Taoyuan and visited industrial facilities there. It is very close to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, the major international airport serving Taipei and Taiwan, and also to Hsinchu Science Park, a high-tech mecca, housing over 400 companies. This area is highly sophisticated and prosperous, and has a bullet train station connecting it to central Taipei in about half an hour’s travel time. It is not at all some third world backwater; quite the contrary.

Since the COVID-19 vaccine is in short supply, demand for HCQ was expected by some people to increase.

Now, it appears that the ability to produce HCQ will be SEVERELY hampered due to this unexplainable explosion.

Though our media is refusing to cover the story, media in Taiwan is giving this massive press coverage.

    According to Taiwan English News:

An explosion at a pharmaceutical factory in Taoyuan City left two injured and caused a fire early this afternoon, December 20.

People as far as Tamsui District in New Taipei City reported hearing the massive blast shortly after noon. Immediately after the blast, thick black smoke could be seen pouring out of the SCI Pharmtech factory.

Firefighters responding to the fire found two people injured. A 30-year-old foreign migrant worker suffered third-degree burns to 80%-90% of his body, and is described as being in a critical condition.

A 40-year-old man suffered a burn to one hand. Both men were sent to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for treatment.

While the factory is located close to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, operations at the airport were not affected, according to reports in United Daily News and ET Today.

The Taoyuan City Fire Department dispatched 76 personnel, 28 fire appliances and 2 ambulances to the scene of the fire.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.

Liberty Times reported that the factory produces hydroxychloroquine APIs, and is the world’s second largest HCQ raw material supplier.

MADRID (AP) — A powerful gas explosion tore through a residential building in central Madrid on Wednesday, killing at least three people and ripping the facade off the structure.

A tower of smoke rose from the building, where repairs were being done to a gas boiler, and billowed through Toledo Street, near the city’s center. Aerial footage shared by Spain’s National Police showed rubble covering a nearby schoolyard — though Madrid’s mayor said no one was seriously injured at the school.

At least eight people were injured in the blast, one seriously, the Madrid emergency service said in a tweet. And a technician who was working on the boiler is missing, according to the Spanish government’s representative for the Madrid region, José Manuel Franco, who confirmed the three dead.

At least 6 dead, several injured in chemical leak at Georgia food processing plant

By: Theresa Seiger, Cox Media Group National Content Desk

Officials said the liquid nitrogen leak, which was initially reported as an explosion, happened around 10 a.m. at Prime Pak Foods and prompted the evacuations of at least 130 people, according to WSB.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, authorities said five people died at the plant. One of the 10 people who were taken to the hospital later died, raising the death toll to six, WSB reported.

Hall County Fire Department Division Chief Zach Brackett said responding officials found “a large contingent of employees that had evacuated, along with multiple victims that were in that crowd that were also experiencing medical emergencies around the facility,” according to The Associated Press.

Three people were taken to a hospital in critical condition and five people were in fair condition after the leak, health officials with the Northeast Georgia Health System told told WSB. The condition of the ninth person was not immediately known, the news station reported. Among those injured were also three Gainesville firefighters and a firefighter from Hall County.

It was not immediately clear what caused the chemical leak. The AP reported that liquid nitrogen is sometimes used on refrigeration systems used by poultry plants like Prime Pak Foods.

“It was a leak of unknown cause that has occurred in the system here,” Brackett said on Thursday. “We still have a lot of information we’re trying to gather from the scene.”

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Georgia’s fire marshal are investigating the cause of the chemical leak, according to the AP.

Prime Pak Foods merged into Foundation Food Group, a company that takes raw chicken and processes it into products like chicken fingers and individual chicken cuts for restaurants and food service operations. The company’s CEO did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Gainesville is the center of Georgia’s poultry industry, which is the nation’s largest, with thousands of employees working for multiple processing plants.

Chinese market gas blast kills 12

    • The explosion at a market in Shiyan in Hubei province on Sunday morning injured more than 130 people
    • Accident follows death of eight people in a chemical leak in Guizhou province the previous day

A gas blast at a market in central China has killed at least 12 and seriously injured another 37, China Central Television reported on Sunday.

The explosion took place at about 6.30am at the Yanhu market in Shiyan, a city in Hubei province, when many residents were having breakfast or buying vegetables in the market, according to the report. A total of 150 people were rescued and 138 were injured, the report added.

It was the latest serious accident in China that caused multiple deaths. A chemical leak on Saturday killed at least eight people and injured another three in Guiyang, the capital of the southern province of Guizhou, on Saturday.

A notice issued by the Shiyan government said it was looking into the cause of the blast.

An initial investigation concluded that the blast was caused by a gas pipeline, according to cqcb.com, a news portal run by the Chongqing government.

Rescuers search the rubble after the blast. Photo: Xinhua

Video footage published on the online news portal Btime.com showed the market had been destroyed, with almost all the windows and doors in the two-story building shattered and the streets filled with rubble.

The ground floor was occupied by food stalls while the second floor contained residential flats. A gas pipeline ran beneath the building.

A local trader told Beijing Youth Daily that she was woken up by the blast which was only 100 metres (330 feet) away from her shop.

“After hearing the blast, I immediately checked on my shop and found many windows were shattered but thankfully not many goods were damaged,” the woman said.

“Blood was splattered across the rubble, some people were covered in blood after being cut by broken glass.”

Another witness identified by his surname Li told Shangyounews, an online news portal, that he was knocked over by the blast and hit by falling debris, but had to take a cab to get to hospital.

“Last March, inspectors from a [local] gas company came to inquire about my shop and asked if I had smelt any natural gas leakage. I said no and they left after the inspection,” Li said.

Around 150 people were rescued from the site. Photo: Xinhua

LIVE: LAPD, ATF investigating South Los Angeles explosion; 17 hurt in blast

    Thursday, July 1, 2021 6:55AM

A Los Angeles police bomb squad truck was destroyed from the blast and the vehicle remained on the street in the 700 block of East 27th Street near San Pedro Street Thursday morning as investigators worked to retain the integrity of the scene.LIVE: LAPD, ATF investigating South Los Angeles explosion; 17 hurt in blast

A national ATF team was expected to arrive to conduct their investigation.

"This was completely unexpected. They followed all the protocols in place. It was not really one of these explosions that was unplanned. This was planned," LAPD Lt. Raul Jovel said at a press conference Thursday morning.

Officials say the material being inside the LAPD truck made the blast more dangerous.

"You put a destructive device inside a closed container where it's pressurized, when it blows up, that is a big punch," Jovel said. "If some of these devices were to explode in the open, the impact would be a lot less because the blast would really go in all directions."

VIDEO: Terrified residents describe South LA explosion
An explosion rocked a South L.A. neighborhood, damaging nearby homes and cars and leaving at least 17 people injured after an illegal fireworks seizure.

Aerial footage from AIR7 HD showed first responders treating injured residents at the scene Wednesday night.

Officials say those injured include 10 LAPD officers, who were all described as in fair condition with minor injuries; one Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officer in fair condition with minor injuries; six civilians - three with moderate injuries and three with minor injuries. One patient did not need to be transported.

Several homes in the area were also damaged and city officials were evaluating them to determine if they were structurally sound.

Earlier in the day, the LAPD seized at least 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a home. At a news conference Wednesday night, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said work was being done throughout the day to move illegal commercial-grade fireworks to an offsite location.

During the operation, 40 coke-can-sized improvised explosive devices with fuses and 200 additional smaller devices with similar construction were found. The material was transferred to a "total containment vehicle" with an iron chamber, which is designed to house explosive material that can be safely detonated.

When the items were detonated shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Moore said there was a "total catastrophic failure of that containment vehicle."

"Clearly protocols were followed and pursued, but something happened in that containment vehicle that should have not happened and we don't know why, but we intend to find out why," Moore said.

Homes, cars and a laundromat had windows shattered and one vehicle had its side plowed in and was knocked over by the force of the blast.

Residents told Eyewitness News they felt the blast from inside a building more than a quarter-mile away.

"I was asleep when I felt like the whole bed was shaking. It felt like a really hard earthquake," one resident said. "It sounded huge."

"Everybody started running, and I couldn't find my mom... Everybody was screaming, going crazy," said 14-year-old Maricela Cortes, who was near the blast with her mother and 6-year-old sister.

MORE: LAPD seizes 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from South LA home

The LAPD seized at least 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a South L.A. home Wednesday afternoon.

Police say they discovered the massive cache at a home on 27th Street after Newton Division officers received a tip. At least 5,000 pounds of fireworks were stored in the home, which is located in a residential neighborhood near an elementary school.
A bomb squad was called to the scene to secure and remove dozens of boxes filled with fireworks, which were set to be hauled away and destroyed with the help of Cal Fire.

One man, identified as Arturo Cejas III, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a destructive device but he also may face charges of child endangerment because his 10-year-old brother was in the home, Moore said.

"We understand that this explosive material was acquired out of state and transported here for the purposes of reselling it to community members and neighbors," Moore said.

The explosion prompted police to evacuate nearby residents. Prior to the blast, only two homes had been evacuated.

"I would expect multiple houses destroyed had those explosives gone up," LAPD Capt. Robert Long told Eyewitness News before the explosion.

In March, a fireworks explosion at an Ontario home killed two people.

Fire erupts on ship, causing explosion that rocks Dubai

The blaze sent up giant orange flames on a vessel at the crucial Jebel Ali Port, the busiest in the Middle East, which sits on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula. The combustion unleashed a shock wave through the city, shaking buildings and windows in neighborhoods as far as 25 kilometers (15 miles) away from the port.

There were no immediate reports of casualties at the port, which is also the busiest port of call for American warships outside of the U.S. Early Thursday, the Dubai government issued a statement saying that emergency services had brought the blaze under control. Authorities posted footage on social media of firefighters dousing giant shipping containers. The glow of the blaze was visible in the background as civil defense crews worked to contain the fire.

The extent of damage caused to the sprawling port and surrounding cargo was not immediately clear. The cause of the fire also was not immediately known. Port officials said they were "taking all necessary measures to ensure that the normal movement of vessels continues without any disruption."

Mona al-Marri, director general of Dubai Media Office, told Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV that this incident "could happen anywhere in the world" and that the government's communication office worked to issue statements quickly to avert rumors from spreading as the cause of the fire is being investigated.

At around 11:45 p.m. residents of Dubai recording with their phones from high-rises posted frantic videos on social media showing a fiery ball illuminating the night sky.

The Jebel Ali Port at the northern end of Dubai is the largest man-made deep-water harbor in the world and serves cargo from the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Asia.

Operated by the Dubai-based DP World, the port has four sprawling container terminals that can berth some of the world's largest ships. The port is not only a critical global cargo hub, but a lifeline for Dubai and surrounding emirates, serving as the point of entry for essential imports

DP World describes Jebel Ali Port as a "gateway hub" and a "vital link in the global trade network" that connects eastern and western markets. The company did not immediately issue any public statement on the blast.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine. A breakdown at a nitrogen plant in Rivne. Orange cloud over the city

A breakdown at a nitrogen plant in Rivne, western Ukraine. The company has reported a one-time nitrous gas leak and the situation is under control. Earlier, the media reported an explosion. On the other hand, videos on social media show a red cloud heading towards the city.

Incident at the Riwne Azot factory in Rivne in the West Ukraine. The head of the regional authorities, Vitaly Koal, wrote on Facebook that the unit at the plant that produces nitric acid has been stopped in case of emergency. Kowal said that the environmental inspection to deal with threat assessment.

Witnesses reported that a red cloud was moving towards the city, the Ukrainian Prawda website wrote. Orange nitric oxide is toxic and can cause eye irritation, coughing, and respiratory illness.

Collapse of nitrogen plants in western Ukraine. “There is no danger”

The company’s press office told Ukrinform that the effects of the emergency had already been completely canceled and no one was affected. According to the company, the air quality indicators are normal and there is no danger to the population and the natural environment.

It was added that there was a pipeline depressurization at the nitric acid plant. “As a result of the exceptional situation, there was a one-time leak of nitrous gases in a small amount on the premises of the stations” – the statement states.

A spokesperson for the local emergency services confirmed to Radio Soboda that the waste collection process had been halted. He noted that “there were no explosions,” although some media outlets reported the explosion. – We informed the environmental inspection to take air samples – added the spokesperson. Radio Trek, in turn, said there was a “little fanfare”. It was later added that a nitrogen gas leak had occurred.

Four injured in fire at Exxon's Baytown, Texas plant

Dec 23 (Reuters) - Four people were injured when a fire erupted on Thursday morning at an Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) complex in Baytown, Texas, one of the largest refining and petrochemical facilities in the United States.

There were no fatalities and those injured were in a stable condition, while other personnel were accounted for, Exxon said.

Emergency response teams were working to extinguish the blaze more than five hours after it erupted at about 1 a.m. on Thursday, the company said.

The fire occurred in a hydrotreater unit at the oil refinery that had been shut on Wednesday due to a bypass line leak, people familiar with plant operations told Reuters. The injured were contractors who had been repairing the leak.

Three of the injured were flown to hospital by Lifeflight rescue helicopter and a fourth person was taken by ambulance, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter.

He said initial reports had indicated there had been some type of explosion at the plant. Social media users said on Twitter that a blast shook buildings in the area.

An Exxon official told a news conference the blaze had affected a unit that produces gasoline.

The Baytown plant houses a chemical plant, an olefins plant and the country's fourth biggest oil refinery, with capacity to process 560,500 barrels per day of crude.

The facility spans about 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Houston and employs about 7,000 people.

The olefins facility, which began operations in 1979, is one of the largest ethylene plants in the world, according to the company's website.

Production was reduced across the Baytown refining and petrochemical complex in August 2019 because of a fire in a propylene recovery unit at the olefins plant.

As many as 37 workers were injured in another fire at the olefins facility in July 2019.

11-alarm chemical fire in Passaic injures firefighter, burns into morning hours Saturday

PASSAIC — More than 200 firefighters continued to battle an 11-alarm chemical fire that sent one to the hospital early Saturday morning.

Frigid temperatures caused runoff water to freeze and create even more hazards for first responders from three counties.

Mayor Hector Lora said that the bulk of the fire, which began around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, is in the Majestic Industries portion of the property but that part has also spread to the Qualco chemical plant at 225 Passaic St.

Lora, who took to Facebook Live throughout the night with updates, said the fire was in multiple buildings and that they expected to lose the whole structure.

"There have been bad fires but this is the worst that I've ever seen," he said.

“If it got to the chemicals there would have been mandatory evacuations,” Lora said. “The fire continues to burn but we have made tremendous progress.”

Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost said that the building where the fire started, which is along the river, has collapsed in on itself. It was vacant but was being used to store plastics, pallets and some chlorine.

He also said that the firefighters are drafting water from the river to supplement the water that they are using.

The smoke was so significant that it was being picked up by radar from the National Weather Service as it spread across northern New Jersey and off the coast.

Residents were being evacuated from the immediate area of the blaze and advised anyone nearby to close their windows. Passaic Street from First Street to Main Avenue was closed to traffic as well as Route 21 in both directions.

“I’m asking residents to keep your windows closed as our fire department and our emergency responders are assessing the extent of this fire,” Lora said. “We are asking all residents to stay as far away as possible. This is a chemical fire. You will see the color in the sky.”

Residents seemed to be heeding those warnings along Fourth Street as the area was empty at about 10:30 p.m.

Gov. Phil Murphy echoed that sentiment on social media, posting that he urged "everyone in Passaic to stay safe as firefighters battle a large eight-alarm fire at a chemical plant off of Route 21."

"If you live nearby, keep your windows closed," Murphy said. "Praying for the safety of our first responders on the scene."

Trentacost said that about 200 firefighters from throughout Essex, Bergen and Passaic counties have responded to the fire.

“This is by no means under control but we are doing everything we can to contain it,” he said.

Trentacost said that his department has been in touch with Passaic Valley Water to provide adequate water pressure and that fire boats from other departments were also en route.

Lora said that the buildings were empty after 5 p.m. and the security guard at the site had been accounted for.

The overwhelming scent of smoke and chemicals, particularly chlorine was enough to make people's eyes water as far away as Wallington after the wind shifted at about 10 p.m. Large embers and sprays of water are also floating across the river.

Lora stressed that it was being assessed but that it was important to stay away because it was a chemical fire.

“There are a lot of firefighters, a lot of police officers that are coming out in order to ensure that individuals are evacuated from the immediate area,” Lora said. “Because this is a chemical fire we are extremely concerned for the health and safety of those in the area.”

Mutual aid from "basically everywhere" was on hand and Lora said that "as of right now" there were no reports of loss of life but he was concerned for police, fire and emergency personnel.

Firefighters are battling the blaze in frigid conditions. The city was 20 degrees after midnight but subzero wind chills are expected overnight with winds of about 15 to 20 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Lora said the city was working to set up a shelter in the city for those displaced. Nearby Wallington sent an alert to their residents advising them to stay indoors with windows closed and to be on the lookout for large embers coming across the river. East Rutherford also posted that "shifting winds may cause smoke from the working fire at a chemical factory in Passaic to pass over areas of the borough" and encouraged residents to stay inside until the fire is under control.

Qualco, the site of the fire, produces and distributes chemicals used to treat pools and spas. They have been based in the city for more than 30 years.

The company housed more than two dozen chemicals on site in 2020 with a daily inventory ranging from 500 pounds of sodium hexametaphosphate to 500,000 pounds of the industrial disinfectant trichloroisocyanuric acid, according to the latest “Community Right to Know” data on hazardous substances from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

According to a 2016 safety datasheet on the website paspdirect.com, Qualco had several chemicals on site including aluminum chlorhydrate and 1,2-Ethanediamine that were the ingredients to a product called “Liquid Floc Rite“ that settles unfilterable substances like algae to the pool floor to be vacuumed. The report says it can cause serious eye damage and skin irritation.

The Passaic Fire Department had used the Qualco facility in the 1990s as a training ground for dealing with large scale chemical fires and spills.

The blaze was reminiscent of the infamous 1985 Labor Day fire that tore through about 20 percent of ... The fire incinerated 21 century-old factories and 17 apartment buildings as well as homes in the Lower Dundee area of the city.

The images coming out of Clinton, Iowa from Wednesday night don't look good. They show a massive explosion that occurred at a chemical plant in the Eastern Iowa town. But fortunately, despite the blast, no one at the facility was injured. And the entire event was caught on camera.

WQAD reports that LyondellBasell officials say that the explosion happened at around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday night. They say that it was caused by an operational event in which one of the plant's low-density reactors made a "loud noise". I'll say. That loud noise also was accompanied by a large fireball.

A resident who lives just outside the city of Clinton also caught the explosion on video on one of his home surveillance cameras. He told WQAD that he'd lived in the area for years and had never seen anything like this. He said that it felt like lightning had struck the entire area.

Plant officials stress that there is no cause for concern in the community and that because safety equipment at the plant worked like it was supposed to, there were no injuries during the explosion. An amazing feat when you watch the video of just how big an explosion it really was. WQAD reports that the fireball could be seen as far away as Illinois.

The Clinton Complex is one of the largest chemical plants in the state of Iowa, covering some 239 acres and employing nearly 400. WQAD reports that the plant uses natural gas as feedstock and then converts it to polyethylene plastic resins.

Small explosion and chemical release contained at OxyChem Chemical Plant

    Posted at 3:02 PM, Jan 27, 2022

and last updated 6:20 PM, Jan 27, 2022

    GREGORY, Texas — UPDATE:
Around 1:30 p.m., there was a fire at the Oxychem Chemical Plant that caused a plume that was visible from outside the plant.

According to Sara Williams, the San Patricio County Emergency Management Coordinator, the fire led to a small explosion, and Oxychem was able to contain the fire on-site with their on-site response team.

Oxychem had their staff and staff of the plant next door, Chemours Ingleside Plant, shelter in place, as is standard protocol since the plants are so close to eachother.

Oxychem is now doing air monitoring to ensure there was not residual chemicals that could harm anybody.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is aware of the explosion and leak, and released this statement to KRIS 6 News:

TCEQ’s Region office in Corpus Christi is aware of this matter and is enroute with air monitoring equipment.

We will conduct an investigation to determine whether any violations have occurred, but for now our focus is on assisting local officials in any immediate response needs they may have.

Shane K. Boyd with OxyChem provided this statement:

This afternoon, the OxyChem Ingleside facility experienced a release at the plant. There were no injuries, the issue was isolated and resolved by employees, and an all-clear has been issued. For OxyChem, protecting the safety, security and health of our workers and neighboring communities is our first priority.

    ORIGINAL STORY:

According to Sheriff Oscar Rivera, a fire and chemical release is being contained at the OXY chemical plant in Ingleside.

Rivera says it was part of one of their processing units and they believe the chemical release was chlorine.

Oxy and Chemours personnel are sheltering in place.

No vapor or product is believed to have left their site.

This is a developing story. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Winston-Salem fire: Explosion feared at fertilizer plant, thousands of residents urged to evacuate

More than 6,000 residents within a one-mile radius of a Weaver Fertilizer Plant in Winston-Salem are being mandated to evacuate their homes for up to 48 hours after a massive fire at the facility erupted Monday night.

The fire was reported before 7 p.m. in the 4400 block of Cherry Street.

Authorities said Monday night that the fire is a volatile situation with a "fairly high" chance of an explosion.

Battalion Chief Patrick Grubbs, a 15-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Fire Department, shared an update with members of the media early Tuesday.

"We're asking everyone to stay out of this area and evacuate the scene," he said, adding that around 6,000 citizens live in the one-mile radius of the plant.

For residents of Winston-Salem, the evacuation line is not expected to expand at this time.

The Winston-Salem fertilizer plant stores 10 times more ammonium nitrate than there was at the time of the fire and explosion at the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility in West Texas in April 2013, according to Mayor Allen Joines.

The blast in Texas nearly a decade ago killed 15 people and wiped out hundreds of homes was caused by a criminal act, investigators determined.

Emergency responders from around the Piedmont Triad, including the Greensboro and Lewisville fire departments, have been called in to help Winston-Salem crews.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation as crews can't get up close to the scene.

    HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW:

    • Emergency officials said air quality is going to be poor Tuesday. People are urged to stay away from any kind of strenuous activity or exercise.
    • Authorities urge people to call 911 only in an emergency.
    • North Hills Elementary School in Winston-Salem is within the evacuation zone and will not be opened Tuesday. North Hills will utilize remote learning as an option today. District officials said all other Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will operate normally, but parents should know that road closures could impact some bus routes and normal travel across the city. People near those areas to be aware buses could be slightly delayed today and that they may need to plan alternative routes to and from school as a precaution.
    • Video posted by the city of Winston-Salem showed towering flames and heavy smoke, and people living within a one-mile radius of the plant were asked to evacuate after the fire reached a rail car holding explosive chemicals.
    • No injuries have been reported from the fire.
    • Firefighters battled the flames two hours before the rail car, which is filled with ammonium nitrate, became impacted, Grubbs said. Since then, all crews have been evacuated.
    • A lone fire engine with no firefighter is spraying water at the scene, and drones are being used to assess the situation multiple times an hour.
    • At least 150 first responders are helping with the fire, including fire, police and emergency management teams. Grubbs did not know how long crews would be on scene but said he wouldn't be leaving "anytime soon."

To alert people to evacuate, Grubbs said firefighters have been going door-to-door all night and driving fire trucks through neighborhoods with loudspeakers to make the announcement.

Evacuees are encouraged to report to the Education Building at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds.

Residents should be prepared to be away from their homes for up to 36 to 48 hours.

EVACUATIONS INCLUDE OFF-CAMPUS WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY HOUSING:

Wake Forest students can go to the Wellbeing Center, Benson University Center and ZSR library. Students can bring a sleeping bag, pillow or blanket to be comfortable, university officials said.

University officials said they are working on long-term plans for those who don't have an alternative place to go.

Classes for Wake Forest students have been canceled for Tuesday.

EVACUATIONS INCLUDE FORSYTH COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY:

Authorities evacuated offenders housed at the Forsyth County Correctional Facility overnight due to the fire. It's unclear at this time where the inmates are being transferred.

Explosion at gold mining site kills at least 63, injures dozens in West Africa: "Bodies everywhere"

"We have 63 dead and around 40 injured," the public prosecutor in the town of Gaoua, Alpha Compaore, told AFP.

The blast in the village of Gbomblora was believed to have been caused by chemicals used to treat gold that were stocked at the site.

    gold-mine.jpg
An explosion near a gold mining site in Burkina Faso killed dozens, the national broadcaster and witnesses reported.REUTERS

State television broadcast video showing bodies covered in sheets on the ground and wounded men at a hospital, Reuters reported.

"I saw bodies everywhere. It was horrible," Sansan Kambou, a forest ranger who was at the site during the explosion, told The Associated Press by phone.

The first blast happened around 2 p.m., with more explosions following as people ran for their lives, he said.

"When we arrived the bodies were scattered, so with the security personnel which came to reinforce, we had to secure the area and use volunteers to evacuate the bodies," Poni Province High Commissioner Antoine Sylvanus Douamba said, according to Reuters. "It was probably caused by explosives but how it happened, for the moment we don't know."

Burkina Faso is the fastest-growing gold producer in Africa and currently the fifth largest on the continent, with gold being the country's most important export. The industry employs about 1.5 million people and was worth about $2 billion in 2019.

The small-scale mines are also reportedly used by jihadis linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State, which have staged attacks in the country since 2016. The groups reportedly raise funds by taxing miners, and also use the mine sites for recruiting fighters and seeking refuge.

Mining experts say the small-scale mines have fewer regulations than industrial ones and thus can be more dangerous.

"The limited regulation of the artisanal and small-scale mining sector contributes to increased risks that can be very dangerous, including the use of explosives which are often smuggled into the country and used illegally," said Marcena Hunter, senior analyst at Global Initiative, a Swiss-based think tank.

Explosion, ensuing fire destroy Houghton apartment building

Just as clocks sprung forward, an explosion rocked the Franklin Square area of downtown Houghton Sunday morning. Happening just after 3:00 AM, the blast led to a fire which subsequently destroyed an apartment complex next to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Office and Welcome Center.

Keweenaw Report spoke to Councilor Robert Megowan, a member of the Houghton Fire Department, and City Manager Eric Waara. They both say that no cause has been determined yet, but they could confirm that residents of the complex say a loud boom was heard right before the fire broke out.

It was severe enough to cause several cars in the parking lot at the front of the complex to also go up in flames.

Social media posts also suggest that an explosion occurred. All residents escaped and are accounted for.

Peter Mackin with the Salvation Army says that many residents are Michigan Tech students. University officials helped to address the immediate needs of those evacuated, namely clothing and footwear. Those who have been displaced will continue to be helped in the days and weeks ahead, including finding new living arrangements.

Multiple departments deployed to assist Houghton Fire. Keweenaw Report saw representatives from UPPCO and SEMCO, as well as the Hancock Fire Department. Ladder trucks used hoses to attack the fire from College Avenue in front of the building and East Lakeshore Drive from behind.

US-23 reopens after gas line rupture sends debris into road near Fenton

(WXYZ) — Crews are on the scene after a gas line ruptured near US-23 and Center Road in Tyrone Township on Wednesday morning. People in the area reported on social media that they heard a loud explosion this morning.

US-23 was closed for hours in both directions before reopening.

“They were cleaning the natural gas pipe. Ground started shaking. He took off running and it just blew. 50 feet in the air. Shook the whole building and blew up old 23,” said Rick Richardson of Woody's Towing. Consumers Energy says they have no reports of fire or injuries.

“The loud boom heard earlier is the result of an apparent break in a transmission line,” a spokesperson says.

We’re told there is no service being interrupted or danger to the community.

Consumers Energy is expected to provide more updates later today.

“Luckily, it didn’t catch fire. Pretty crazy. We are waiting for the call to scrape the road but haven’t gotten the call yet,” said Richardson.

The Fenton Twp. Fire Chief says people can safely leave their homes now after initially being told to stay in place. We're told gas is no longer leaking, and anyone with damage to a home or vehicle should file a report.

Old US 23 is also open for traffic.

15 injured, 1 seriously after boat explodes during refueling on Illinois River, police say

    Saturday, May 28, 2022 9:49PM

Conservation police, as well as state troopers, responded after reports of a boat fire on the Illinois River just before 4:30 p.m. at the Spring Brook Marina in LaSalle County, according to Illinois State Police.

Several families were on the boat, about to get ready to head out on the water when the boat exploded while they were fueling, conservation police said.

The vessel was apparently having engine problems and went to the marina to refuel. After refueling, they tried to restart the engine when there was an explosion, Sgt. Phillip Wire said.

The boat had 17 occupants and 13 were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The victims range from "youth" to adults.

A man was also life flighted to an area hospital with serious injuries.

A marina employee was among those injured, officials said.

The boat is still in the water as officers work to contain the fuel. They plan to be back at the scene Sunday to remove it.

The incident comes as many people are celebrating the Memorial Day weekend.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources is investigating.

17 missing, dozens injured in explosive fire at Cuban oil storage facility hit by lightning

    Updated on Aug 6, 2022 5:08 PM EDT — Published on Aug 6, 2022 2:51 PM EDT

HAVANA (AP) — A fire set off by a lightning strike at an oil storage facility raged uncontrolled Saturday in the city of Matanzas, where four explosions and flames injured nearly 80 people and left 17 firefighters missing, Cuban authorities said.

Firefighters and other specialists were still trying to quell the blaze at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, where the fire began during a thunderstorm Friday night, the Ministry of Energy and Mines tweeted. The government said later that it had asked for help from international experts in “friendly countries” with experience in the oil sector.

Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío said the U.S. government had offered technical help to quell the blaze. On his Twitter account, he said the “proposal is in the hands of specialists for the due coordination.”

Minutes later, President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked Mexico , Venezuela, Russia, Nicaragua, Argentina and Chile for their offers of help.

The official Cuban News Agency said lightning hit one tank, starting a fire, and the blaze later spread to a second tank. As military helicopters flew overhead dropping water on the blaze, dense column of black smoke billowed from the facility and spread westward more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) toward Havana.

Roberto de la Torre, head of fire operations in Matanzas, said firefighters were spraying water on intact tanks trying to keep them cool in hopes of preventing the fire from spreading.

The Facebook page of the provincial government of Matanzas said the number of injured had reached 77, while 17 people were missing. The Presidency of the Republic said the 17 were “firefighters who were in the nearest area trying to prevent the spread.”

Seven of the injured were taken to Calixto García Hospital in Havana, which has a prominent burn unit.

The accident comes as Cuba struggles with fuel shortages. There was no immediate word on how much oil had burned or was in danger at the storage facility, which has eight giant tanks that hold oil used to fuel electricity generating plants.

“I was in the gym when I felt the first explosion.  A column of smoke and terrible fire rose through the skies,” resident Adiel Gonzalez told The Associated Press by phone. “The city has a strong smell of sulfur.”

Authorities said about 800 people were evacuated from the Dubrocq neighborhood closest to the fire, while Gonzalez added that some people decided to leave the Versailles district, which is a little farther from the tank farm.

Many ambulances, police and fire engines were seen in the streets of Matanzas, a city with about 140,000 inhabitants that is on Matnzas Bay.

Diaz-Canel traveled to the area of the fire early Saturday, officials said.

Local meteorologist Elier Pila showed satellite images of the area with a dense plume of black smoke moving from the point of the fire westward and reaching east to Havana.

“That plume can be close to 150 kilometers long,” Pila wrote on his Twitter account.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - Officials say nine employees at the Vitro plant in Wichita Falls were transported to the hospital following an explosion.

Wichita County Sheriff David Duke tells our crew that a gas leak occurred inside a portion of the plant. He says the leak was next to a burner which caused an ignition leading to an explosion.

Eight victims were transported by ambulance, while one was transported by Air Evac to United Regional, Duke says.

At this moment, officials say the affected portion of the plant has been evacuated while the Wichita Falls Fire Department monitors the situation.

Transformer explosion in Lexington Center sparks large fire, forces street closures
    Updated: 6:05 AM EDT Aug 9, 2022

    LEXINGTON, Mass. —
A transformer explosion sparked a multi-alarm fire in the Massachusetts town of Lexington on Monday.

The explosion resulted in a three-alarm fire in the 1700 block of Mass. Avenue, with thick, black smoke pouring into the air.

"I was shaking. I'm still shaking. It was terrifying," said witness Emerson Graf. "We started to hear scratching and little clicking noises and we just looked over and there was this giant explosion. We didn't know what happened. It was just insane. It was so loud."

The transformer fire led to streets in the Lexington Center area being closed to vehicle traffic. Police said they also closed the Minuteman Bikeway.

Lexington fire Chief Derek Sencabaugh said the substation where the transformer explosion happened belongs to Eversource Energy.

An Eversource spokesperson said the fire was reported just before 6 p.m. and that there were no power outages associated with it.

Firefighters poured water on the 16-foot transformer for about an hour, battling both the blaze and high temperatures.

On top of trying to keep the crews as cool as possible, Sencabaugh said another big concern was water getting into the switchers in the basement of the substation. Those switchers are more than 100 years old.

"Because if the water had come up, it would start popping switches, which would then pop manholes down the street. So we, initially, were really starting to push people out of the area," Sencabaugh said.

No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

The cause of the transformer explosion remains under investigation. Sencabaugh said one possibility could be the high demand for electricity to power air conditioners given the high temperatures and humidity levels over the past several days.

Three people are dead after a house exploded in southern Indiana, officials said.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene in Evansville, after the blast occurred Wednesday afternoon on the 1000 block of North Weinbach Avenue, officials said.

Three deaths have been reported to the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office as a result of the explosion, Chief Deputy Coroner David Anson said in a statement.

Two of the victims were in the home that exploded, while the third was not, according to Evansville Fire Chief Mike Connelly.

The victims were identified by the coroner's office on Thursday as Charles Hite, 43, and Martina Hite, 37, who both lived in the home, and their next-door neighbor, 29-year-old Jessica Teague.

One person was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Connelly said.

The home where the explosion occurred was destroyed and 39 other structures were "damaged severely or suffered minor damage," Connelly told reporters Wednesday evening. The Knight Township Trustee's Office was among the buildings damaged and will be closed for the foreseeable future, officials said.

According to Evansville's building department, 11 of the 39 homes damaged in the explosion are uninhabitable, Connelly said.

Some 60 firefighters were on the scene assisting, Connelly said.

A 100-foot radius around the blast was not immediately searchable and some buildings were not safe to enter, Connelly said, who noted there could be other victims. Though no additional victims have been found following a search and nobody is unaccounted for at this time, he said on Thursday.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Connelly had initially said investigators ruled out an intentional ignition source and believed it to be accidental, though he later retracted that statement.

"The cause is undetermined," he said.

CenterPoint Energy arrived following the blast and "made the scene safe," Connelly said. "There was no detection of gas and they're restoring service now."

Natalie Hedde, a spokesperson for CenterPoint Energy, told reporters there was no work being done in the area at the time of the incident and the company had not received any phone calls "suggesting there was a natural gas emergency."

Continued surveys have shown no indications of natural gas being detected on the outside of the structure, she said.

"At this time we feel confident there are no challenges with CenterPoint Energy's natural gas system," Hedde said.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke was on-site surveying the damage.

"There's a big investigation and cleanup effort underway," Winnecke told ABC Evansville affiliate WEHT Wednesday.

An off-duty Evansville police officer reported the explosion, the mayor said.

"It felt like an earthquake," Max Walter, who works near the site of the explosion, told WEHT. "I'm at a loss for words as to the extent of what this is."

"As more information becomes available, the respective agencies investigating will be able to provide more information," the department said.

ABC News' Darren Reynolds contributed to this report.

“The search and recovery for further fatalities continues," said the police force, An Garda Siochana. The cause of the blast is under investigation.

Emergency responders from Ireland and neighboring Northern Ireland are involved in what police said was now a “search and recovery” operation. Sniffer dogs combed the debris, and a mechanical digger lifted piles of rubble from the site.

The explosion leveled the gas station building, which holds the main shop and post office for the village, and damaged an adjacent residential building.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said it was one of the “darkest of days for Donegal and the entire country.”

“People across this island will be numbed by the same sense of shock and utter devastation as the people of Creeslough at this tragic loss of life,” Martin said.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue, who represents Donegal in Ireland's parliament, said the service station was well known across the country because of its prominent position on the main N56 road, and was “the heart” of the local community.

“People are shocked and numbed,” he told Irish broadcaster RTE. “People have been rallying together and everyone’s concern is with the families of those who have lost their loved ones and how they can support them in the days ahead."

One dead and 'a dozen' missing after 'gas' explosion at block of flats in Jersey (UK) as police urge people to stay away

Debris was strewn across the street while smoke plumes billowed through the air, as two 'walking wounded' were rushed to hospital

One person has died and up to 12 people are missing after an explosion destroyed several flats in Jersey.

Emergency services were called to Haut du Mont flats in St Helier just before 4am amid reports of a major incident.

A search and rescue operation is underway in an attempt to find people trapped in the rubble, but the scene is reportedly 'very dangerous'.

Debris was strewn across the street while smoke plumes billowed through the air, as two 'walking wounded' were rushed to hospital.

States of Jersey Police chief officer Robin Smith said: 'Following the explosion this morning at Haut du Mont, Pier Road, a number of residents are still missing.'

He noted the search and rescue operation will likely take 'a number of days', and said the three-storey building had completely collapsed.

'From a demolition point of view, it's like a pancake that has dropped completely down... It is considerable destruction... It is a devastating scene, I regret to say.

'There needs to be a recognition that we could have more fatalities.'

The fire has now been extinguished, but emergency services are still 'carrying out significant work' at the scene, which is cordoned off

Here's what we know about an explosion, fire at a Marengo plant

    Updated: 9:01 AM CST Dec 9, 2022

    MARENGO, Iowa —
Multiple patients are being treated at University of Iowa Health Hospitals & Clinics for injuries following an explosion and fire at a Marengo plant, about 80 miles east of Des Moines.

The Iowa State Patrol tells KCCI that the explosion happened around 11:20 a.m. on Thursday. Many agencies responded within a 30-50 mile radius. The first priority was to account for the people inside the plant, several of which sustained injuries. A few injuries are burn-related.

The state patrol tells KCCI that preliminary findings indicate that approximately 30 people were in the plant.  All of those people have been accounted for.

UI Hospitals & Clinics said that they are treating 10-15 patients who were at the explosion. They cannot comment on specific conditions, but say the majority are in the minor to moderate category. Most patients are being treated for burns and trauma. Patients' immediate family members can contact the hospital at 319-356-1616.

The fire is still burning and crews are using foam and water to put it out. The state Fire Marshal is on site trying to find a cause.

Marengo residents in an eight-block radius were evacuated from their homes, but have since been allowed to return.

Iowa State Patrol continues to monitor air and water quality.

"This was a hazmat situation. This is a biofuel plant, from my understanding. With that, we look at what is possibly in there, we try and figure out what chemicals are there. Look at the hazmat guide and say, ‘OK we want to evacuate these people,'" Iowa State Trooper Bob Conrad told KCCI.

11:20 a.m. Authorities receive a call for an explosion and fire at the Marengo plant.

12:05 p.m. One business near the fire tells KCCI they are under evacuation.

12:30 p.m. The city says on Facebook if residents are evacuated due to the fire, they should go to the Iowa County Transportation Building.

12:45 p.m. A staff member with Iowa Valley Community School District said the district is not impacted. So far, they have not evacuated or canceled classes.

12:45 p.m. The State Fire Marshal's Office said they have not responded but are aware of the fire.

12:50 p.m. Staff at the Iowa County Transportation Building says they don't have any evacuated residents there yet. They are on standby to pick people up if needed.

1:15 p.m.KCCI's Beau Bowman has arrived on scene in Marengo. While keeping a safe distance from the investigation, KCCI is working to confirm new information about the explosion and whether anyone is hurt.

1:20 p.m. University of Iowa Health Hospitals & Clinics says it has received multiple patients following the explosion. Staff members say they anticipate others may be en route. At this time, UIHC says doctors are evaluating the severity of injuries and working to ensure all patients receive the care they require.

1:40 p.m. KCCI confirms the burning building is owned by Heartland Crush LLC, according to the Iowa County assessor.

1:45 p.m. Iowa Valley Community School District tells KCCI students and staff members in Marengo are advised to not go outdoors because of air quality concerns. There are currently no changes to student pickup or activities after school.

3:50 p.m. UIHC confirms 10-15 patients are being cared for that were at the explosion. Most patients are being treated for burns and trauma. Most patients are in minor to moderate condition.

8:26 p.m. Residents in an eight-block radius who had evacuated are allowed to return home.

Crews continue to put out the fire.

There was no immediate evidence of an attack, Lithuania gas transmission operator Amber Grid said.

The flames have since been put out but video published by Lithuania's public broadcaster LRT showed a fire raging at the blast site in the Panevezys county in northern Lithuania.

WEST READING, Pa. — An explosion at a chocolate factory in Pennsylvania on Friday killed five people and left six people missing, authorities said.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency confirmed the increase in the number of fatalities Saturday morning after the blast just before 5 p.m. Friday at the R.M. Palmer Co. plant in the borough of West Reading.

Chief of Police Wayne Holben said the blast destroyed one building and damaged a neighboring building.

"It's pretty leveled," Mayor Samantha Kaag said of the explosion site. "The building in the front, with the church and the apartments, the explosion was so big that it moved that building four feet forward."

The cause of the blast in the community about 60 miles (96 kilometers) northwest of Philadelphia was under investigation, Holden told reporters.

Eight people were taken to Reading Hospital Friday evening, Tower Health spokeswoman Jessica Bezler said.

Two people were admitted in fair condition and five were being treated and would be released, she said in an email. One patient was transferred to another facility, but Bezler provided no further details.

Kaag said people were asked to move back about a block in each direction from the site of the explosion but no evacuations were ordered.

Dean Murray, the borough manager of West Reading Borough, said some residents were displaced from the damaged apartment building.

Kagg said borough officials were not in immediate contact with officials from R.M. Palmer, which Murray described as "a staple of the borough."

The company's website says it has been making "chocolate novelties" since 1948 and now has 850 employees at its West Reading headquarters.

Dramatic moment entire road explodes in mystery blast leaving one person dead and dozens hurt as it sends buses flying

    • Footage shows road cracking in city's Central Business District
    • Gas provider denies leak is the cause of the sudden blast on Bree Street

An explosion from a so far unknown origin ripped through a street in Johannesburg on Wednesday July 19, killing one person and injuring dozens.

Security CCTV footage from a building nearby shows the moment the explosion happened in the city's Central Business District, cracking the tarmac and sending minibuses and taxis flying.

The cause of the explosion on Bree Street has not yet been confirmed and officials have warned the public to avoid the area due to safety concerns.

The video shows pedestrians running frantically on pavements following the explosion.

Most vehicles appeared to have been left unable to move as a result of the blast, with one van shown attempting to reverse up the street.

Man narrowly escapes flying bus by deadly explosion in Johannesburg

Some people needed to be rescued after being left trapped in their cars.

The footage shows a large crack down the middle of the road as well as a gaping hole left by the explosion.

Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) said at least 11 people were injured in the explosion.

One of those was seriously injured, according to reports.

A disaster management squad is in the area and have cordoned off a 1 km area because of the risk of further explosions.

The buildings are also being assessed for structural damage as a result of the blast.

A gas leak is suspected to be the cause of the sudden incident, with some locals reporting smells in the area.

But Egoli Gas which manages the pipeline under the street, denied the blast was a result of their network and said that investigations had not uncovered any sign of a leak.

It pointed to the fact that its gas pipes run at extremely low pressure to the side of the road, and were left intact when the tarmac split from the centre.

In a tweet, it said: "It is unlikely that the explosion in Johannesbury CBD, Bree Street, was caused by a gas pipeline or leak.

"Our network has experienced no pressure loss which indicates the gas pipelines are intact. Our customers in the area continue to receive gas uninterrupted."

Silo blast in southern Brazil kills at least eight, one missing

SAO PAULO, July 27 (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed and nearly a dozen were injured after a grain silo explosion on Wednesday at an agricultural co-operative in southern Brazil, the government of Parana state where the incident occurred and the company involved said on Thursday.

The blast happened at the C.Vale co-operative in the small town of Palotina, about 600 km (370 miles) from the state's capital Curitiba. Parana is one of Brazil's top farm states.

A company spokesperson said seven of those who died were foreign workers, mostly Haitians, and one was Brazilian.

C.Vale said the silo where the explosion occurred stored about 12,000 metric tons of soybeans and 40,000 metric tons of corn.

The company, which stores grains in 125 units across five Brazilian states and in Paraguay, had said earlier in the day nearly a dozen people had been hospitalized after the blast, excluding the fatalities.

A similar explosion took place in 1993, C.Vale confirmed.

Ricken declined to speculate on the causes of the explosion, deferring questions to authorities as investigations are ongoing.

Grain dust particles are highly combustible and can cause fires or explosions in confined spaces such as grain storage facilities, although it is unclear what happened in this case.

Fire Department official Manoel Vasco said dogs were helping in the search for the missing worker potentially trapped under the rubble and grains.

Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva both posted on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that they received news of the explosion and deaths with sadness.

Acting Parana Governor Darci Piana headed to Palotina, a city of some 35,000 people, alongside state secretaries to follow the rescue operations and provide support to the families, the government said.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Part of a two-story apartment building in Newark was reduced to rubble after an explosion left several people injured Friday evening.

The building, managed by the Newark Housing Authority, was all but destroyed about 6 p.m. Friday after an explosion rocked the building. The cause of the blast is under investigation.

The walls of the building were blown off, leaving a refrigerator and furniture on full display.

Valery Lasky and her son work at a nearby deli.

"He said 'Ma, a building exploded.' I ran and looked and saw a guy climbing down the rubble. The owner of the store said there were people all over the ground," Lasky said.

Newark officials said six people were hurt. Five were taken to area hospitals. One woman suffered from serious burns.

Several people were injured and homes are destroyed after an explosion in Newark. Anthony Carlo has the details.

"I actually know the man who is in there. His name is Mario, and I just hope he is going to be OK," Lasky added.

The Red Cross is assisting at least 31 displaced families, including 28 adults and three children, as investigators try to pin down what happened.

"No, we don't have any information about where the explosion started, what unit it started from; this is an ongoing investigation," Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage said.

Romania explosion: Huge blasts at fuel station kill two and injure dozens

At least two people died and 56 were injured after two blasts at a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) station in Romania.

The injured included 39 firefighters who went to the scene following the first explosion near the capital Bucharest on Saturday evening.

Shortly after, a second blast sent a mushroom cloud billowing into the sky, rocking the forecourt in Crevedia.

Several people are in critical condition with severe burns, authorities said.

The two people who died were a couple, Raed Arafat, the head of Romania's emergency department, told reporters on Sunday.

They sent four people who were injured, including two firefighters, to hospitals abroad and said others would follow.

Two police officers and two gendarmes are among the injured.

Authorities do not yet know what caused the blast. Mr Arafat said the station was no longer in use and "did not have a permit to function", according to quotes reported by the Agence France-Presse news agency.

People within a 700-metre (almost half a mile) radius were initially evacuated from the area, with Mr Arafat warning there was a risk of another explosion.

But by mid-morning, the fires had been contained.

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis described the explosions as a "tragedy" and said he was "profoundly saddened" by what had happened.

"An investigation must quickly be launched to see if rules were broken. I ask the authorities to take urgent measures for the injured so that these tragedies won't happen again," he wrote on Facebook.

Chicago area home destroyed, 10 other buildings damaged in apparent natural gas explosion

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A home in northwest suburban Woodstock was destroyed in an apparent natural gas explosion Monday afternoon.

Woodstock Police said, around 12:30 p.m., a city employee reported a natural gas leak near Lincoln Avenue and Tryon Street. Nicor Gas crews were called to the scene, and nearby streets were shut down as a precaution.

Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Chief Brendan Parker said, as a Nicor team was assessing the damage, firefighters evacuated St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave., and urged nearby homeowners to shelter in place. The school at the church was closed on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday.

Around 2:40 p.m., a two-story home across the street from the church exploded, and was completely leveled.

"I heard this big boom, and it woke me up, and I was scared. I thought a car hit my house. Like, it was scary," said neighbor Abigail Scott.

A total of 10 buildings were damaged in the blast, including the church and school. At least one other home also caught fire.

The explosion left a massive debris field around the home, with some pieces of debris on top of a Nicor Gas truck parked outside the home.

Rebecca Bosowski said the explosion destroyed her brother Ben's home – one that he and his wife had moved into less than a year and half ago.

"Their whole life was in that house, and they have to rebuild, and we're here to help them, and hopefully people can help them as well," she said.

Luckily no one was home at that time, but everything they owned ended up buried under rubble. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help rebuild.

Bosowski said her brother and sister-in-law's two dogs were burned. Both were taken to the vet for treatment. They're still searching for the family's cat.

At least 11 people were left homeless as a result of the explosion.

Parker said fire department officials do not have any safety concerns for the neighborhood at this time.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. The gas leak was contained by about 3:30 p.m., after Nicor shut off gas to the area.

Parker said the Red Cross was providing assistance to any residents left homeless as a result of damage from the explosion.
