Fault lines, when adjusting, do not just rip apart one day during a dramatic earthquake. They most often creep. Laying gas lines along or across a fault line is asking for an accident of this sort. Fault lines are also seldom so clearly delineated that one can go a mile in this or that direction and avoid their action. Where a slip-slide fault such as the San Andreas will often leave a clear line on the surface, this is only the surface action, not what occurs in the rock layers on either side which can fracture for a long way to either side during any movement. The gas company, or the age of the pipes, will be faulted but in truth the finger should be pointed in many directions. The public, who insist on living at such a scenic spot, is to blame. Officials, who zoned for housing are to blame. The public utility company, for allowing gas lines in the area, is to blame. But this will change nothing, while man continues to live on the San Andreas, even as it awakens. EOZT

The danger from radon gas will not be increased as a result of the pole shift. Radon gas is emitted by rock containing uranium, which is degrading. In normal circumstances, where air can circulate, it is disbursed rapidly as is any methane created by decay of organic material. The danger from these gasses comes from confinement - being trapped in a mine, a basement, or beneath the permafrost. The dangers are well known. For methane, it is explosions. An accumulation of methane gas can be identified by the smell of rotten eggs, or as some have described it, dirty socks or cabbage soup. For radon gas the danger is lung cancer, from the continual exposure to the radioactive air. Radon gas is odorless and cannot be detected except by specialized equipment not in the hands of the average person.
In that the pole shift, or the Earth changes preceding the pole shift, can fracture rock and release pockets of either gas, survivors should be cautious about huddling in bunkers. You are safer out in the open air, or in a trench you have dug that will allow the pole shift winds to pass over you, but nothing to fall on and crush you. The fact that both methane gas and radon gas can accumulate in the bunkers of the elite is one of the reasons we have stated that they have dug their own graves. EOZT

Anyone watching the news, for instance the news on the San Bruno explosion in a distribution line close to the San Andreas Fault line, knows that gas in any form is a danger. Oil and gas refineries explode when rigid piping cracks. Oil or gas wells explode when the ground around them moves. And the gas distribution lines running under cities are no exception. They likewise will explode. Gas lines, whether along the street or within a home, are rigid. In some cases automatic shutoff valves can limit the amount of gas available for an explosion by sensing a drop in pressure, but this is always after the fact. The explosion has already occurred. Utilizing gas on a planet prone to earthquakes was a mistake to begin with, but man never thinks of the consequences when striving for modern conveniences. We have advised turning off the gas at the street, though when the street explodes and your neighbor's homes are on fire you are not likely to escape the holocaust. A better alternative is to live in an area where gas is not available, as in your rural safe location where you will be doing a form of camping while gardening. A campfire at night, for cooking and washing and a bit of friendly light before bed. Nothing explosive. EOZT

SOZT Answer: It is no accident that the New Madrid fault lies under the Mississippi River near Memphis, as rivers form in lowlands created when land pulls apart, separating the rock fingers and weakening support for the land. Thus, the Ohio River bed also is an indication of where rock fingers will pull apart. Two adjustments in Kentucky, a day apart, are not an accident, but an indication of the speed at which the stretch zone is starting to adjust. Rail lines are frequently an early harbinger of such adjustments, as they run long distances, whereas structures within cities, such as tall buildings, take up relatively little space and have a small footprint. Our warning that imploding cities will be experienced, before the hour of the shift, are in this regard. Be warmed, it will not just be your rail lines and gas and water mains that will shatter and be pulled apart during the stretch. The foundations of your tall buildings will likewise be vulnerable.EOZT

The staff were trapped 700 meters (2,300 feet) below ground following an unexplained blast, police said, adding "all personnel have been rescued."
The mining authority said one of the staff was seriously injured, according to the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung news website.
Before the rescue, those trapped were supplied with oxygen and took refuge in a safe section of the mine in Teutschenthal, about 150 kilometers southwest of Berlin, near the city of Halle.
The mine was closed in 1982 but is being used to deposit mining waste from elsewhere, the website said. Around 100 people are employed at the site.

Gas-line explosion rattles Pepper Pike, forces evacuations, shuts down roads
Updated 6:02 AM;Today 5:05 AM
PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — A gas-line explosion early Friday morning lit up the sky as flames leapt from the ground, forcing the evacuation of several residents and closing several roads.
Pepper Pike Chief of Police Joe Mariola says the explosion occurred just before 1 a.m. on Brainard Circle. Although nearby residents reportedly felt the blast, there are no reports of injuries or damage to homes. The gas line has been shut off and the fire is no longer burning.
Mariola says “several” residents were relocated to the Beachwood Community Center overnight, but he did not say exactly how many. More than 500 homes were without power Friday morning because of the explosion. FirstEnergy estimates power could be restored by 6:30 a.m.
Roads in the area, including Gates Mills Boulevard from Lander to Brainard Circle, Shaker Boulevard from Lander Road to Richmond Road, and Brainard Road from Fairmount to South Woodland were closed as of 5 a.m. because of damage to roads and power lines, Mariola says. It’s unclear when they will reopen.
Nearby schools have been notified and might be affected by the road closures, Mariola says. He says more information will be released as it becomes available.

15 Dead, Nine Injured in China Coal Mine Explosion

Gas explosion in mine in Pingyao county
BEIJING (AP) — A gas explosion inside a coal mine in northern China has killed 15 miners and left another nine injured, authorities said Tuesday.
The blast occurred Monday afternoon at a mine operated by the local Feng Yan Group in Shanxi province’s Pingyao county. Rescue work was halted early Tuesday morning after everyone was accounted for.
The Shanxi provincial work safety administration said 11 miners escaped without injury and the cause of the explosion was being investigated. While relatively small in scale, the mine had been cited last year for failure to provide adequate training for workers.
Gas explosions in mines usually occur when volatile methane, also known as coal gas, is not properly ventilated after leaking from the seam. At a high concentration, the gas can be ignited by a simple spark, open flame or electrical equipment, setting off second explosions of coal dust in the air.
Such a scenario was blamed for the world’s deadliest mining accident, at the Benxihu, or Honkeiko, colliery in northeastern China’s Liaoning province in 1942 while it was under Japanese military management. A total of 1,549 workers were believed to have been killed, almost all of them Chinese.
China’s mines have long been the world’s deadliest, accounting for about 80% of all mining deaths globally. A drop in the price of coal, safety improvements, better training and the closure of smaller mines have reduced the toll considerably in recent years.

4 injured in Dippin' Dots factory explosion
'We are praying for their recovery'
An explosion at a Dippin' Dots ice cream fatory in Ketucky injured four people Friday night, authorities said.
Dippin' Dots CEO Scott Fischer said the four who were injured have been hospitalized. One person was discharged and another is set to be discharged soon.
"We have contacted the proper local, state and federal officials and will be working side-by-side with them to conduct a thorough investigation. It is premature for us to comment at this time without the benefit of facts from a comprehensive investigation," Fischer said in a statement to FOX Business.
"At this moment what is most important to us is our employees, especially our four team members who were injured last night. We are a close-knit company and we are praying for their recovery, and grateful there were no fatalities. Additionally, we want to thank our local first responders for their quick and capable assistance last night. We appreciate what they did to help us," Fischer added.
Paducah city spokeswoman Pam Spencer said the plant, where Dippin' Dots is headquartered, had a nitrogen leak, but it was unclear whether that leak caused the explosion or happened afterward. Nitrogen is used to flash-freeze Dippin’ Dots novelty ice cream.
The extent of the explosion victims' injuries and damage to the factory remains unknown, Hesiner told reporters, adding that he wants to "ensure that they're safe" and would bring a structural engineer to the facility to assess the damage so cleanup can begin.

Apparent natural gas explosion destroys Mt. Vernon home, closes nearby high school
by KOMO News Staff
Monday, November 25th 2019MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- An apparent natural gas leak caused a large explosion that shook a Mount Vernon neighborhood and left a home fully engulfed in flames.
The explosion was reported in the 900 block of East Fulton Street just after 6 a.m., according to Peter Donovan with the city of Mount Vernon. Firefighters arrived to find a "raging fire" in a home, reportedly fueled by a leaking natural gas line.
Two people were inside the home at the time of the explosion and managed to escape before flames took over the entire structure, Donovan said. One of the residents was injured and was taken to a local hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not given. The other resident was not hurt.
Daniel Darsch, who lives next door, immediately woke up when the explosion happened.
“I was sound asleep, I heard a big boom and I was trying to figure out what the heck it was, like a storm or something,” Darsch said. “I noticed in the curtains of my window in my bedroom, that there was some glowing, I looked and a big stinkin’ fire right over there.”
Firefighters were able to save two nearby homes from damage. Officials from Cascade Natural Gas responded to the scene to shut off the gas line. According to Mount Vernon’s assistant fire chief Bryan Harris, the gas line was shut off at around 10:15 a.m.
“I don’t necessarily know if there was a natural gas leak,” Harris said, “I don’t even know if that was the cause at this point.”
According to Harris, it will take some time before investigators will be able to determine a cause.
“We just want to get in there, get room for the investigators to try to make a cause determination,” he said.
The explosion was so powerful, it knocked items off of shelves in nearby homes.
“All of the stuff in our house, most of the stuff on the shelves and stuff, they were just falling off,” Darsch said.
Mount Vernon High School, which is across the street from the burning home, was closed for the day due to the fire response.

Explosion at Princeton reclamation plant
Nov. 28, 2019 4:00 p.m.
Envirogreen soil processing plant rocked by blast
The cause of an explosion at a soil reclamation operation near Princeton may not be known for a while.
Vijay Lanji, president of Envirogreen Technologies, said the company is in the process of investigating the explosion that occurred at their Similkameen operation on Nov. 28.
“There were no injuries. And that’s the most important thing,” said Lanji.
“Now we’re just trying to figure out what happened, whether it was a control issue or what. We’ve just had WorkSafe take a look at the site, release it back to us so we can start our investigation.”
The Envirogreen plant, located about 18 kilometres south of Princeton, on Highway 3, uses a thermal desorption process to purify hydrocarbon-contaminated soil.
Lanji said the soil it processes comes from many sites, such as old gas station brown sites and old mine sites such as the one his plant is located in.
Unlike incineration, which produces ash, the desorption process heats waste at a lower temperature, causing the hydrocarbon contaminants to off-gas. That gas is captured and used as fuel for the plant.
The resulting soil is sterilized and used for mine reclamation, according to Lanji.
Investigators are looking into where the explosion began.
“We’re trying to determine that, whether it was in some ductwork or a burner. It hasn’t been established yet,” said Lanji. “We were just on the phone with our supplier to see what might have failed.”
The plant employs about 30 people and Lanji said the company wants to make sure everything is sound before it returns to full operation.
“We want our supplier to be involved in the investigation to make sure all of our safety mechanisms etc are working before we start putting our plan together for starting up operation.”
Envirogreen has operated in the Princeton location since 1995. According to the company’s website, it operates with permits granted by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment and the facility has been audited by prominent regulatory agencies.

Thousands 'left without gas for days' in freezing conditions
A mains failure means thousands of people could be without gas for days.
Schools could be closed and thousands of people left without gas for days in central Scotland due to a mains failure.
Eight thousand properties are affected, with Gas infrastructure company SGN saying it will have to go door-to-door to turn off supplies in affected properties for safety reasons.
Temperatures in the area are below zero and are expected to remain low over the coming days. Falkirk Council said schools may have to close tomorrow and it would be working with SGN to care for vulnerable people affected.
SGN said it would provide electric heaters and cookers for the elderly, disabled, chronically sick and those with young children - and would be available from Camelon Community Centre.
In a statement, the company said a fault in a piece of equipment that regulates pressure in the gas network was to blame.
"While we repair the gas governor, we need to visit all affected properties to turn off your gas supply at the meter and we'll need access to your home to turn off your gas supply," SGN said.
"It will take us some days to reach everyone so if you do need to pop out or go to work, it would be helpful for us if you're able to leave a key with a neighbour.
"With so many homes affected, it's likely you could be without your gas supply for several days. We're sorry for the inconvenience this will cause. We're doing all we can to restore gas supplies to the area as soon as possible."
Falkirk Council said i had alerted housing and social work services to be on stand by to support SGN and was contacting head teachers to let parents know this evening about what schools may be affected.
"We have a list of vulnerable people in the area so we know were people who may have the most difficulty are," a spokesman said.
He said schools could potentially close if the buildings are very cold, though all care homes in affected areas are currently fine.
"We are ready to support SGN in any way we can," he said.

One rescued after possible gas explosion levels 3 Philadelphia row houses; search for others to start
One person was rescued and others are feared dead after a possible gas explosion toppled three South Philadelphia row houses and significantly damaged two other buildings on Thursday, officials said.
Firefighters were looking for at least one person in one collapsed building after responding to reports of an explosion and fire at a tenement on South 8th Street about 11:30 a.m., Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel told reporters.
The person was trapped under heavy debris and is believed to have died, he said.
There were unconfirmed reports of possibly one or two other people trapped in the damaged buildings, Thiel said.
"We have to bring in heavy equipment to start de-layering the collapsed building," the commissioner said, describing the scene as still "dangerous and unstable."
"While we're hopeful ... unfortunately we're probably in a recovery mode now."
About 60 people were evacuated from the block, the commissioner said.
The recovery effort was being hampered by the structural damage to the buildings and what authorities believe is a sinkhole forming in the street.
The heavy "gas-fed" fire, plus structural damage to several buildings, prevented firefighters from immediately determining whether people were trapped inside, Thiel said. The cause of the explosion and fire was under investigation.
"We are still not sure what the occupancy status is of the fully collapsed building," he said earlier.
"This will be an extremely risky and dangerous operation ... to perform a thorough search and hopefully rescue anybody who might be inside," the commissioner added.
For much of Thursday afternoon, firefighters sprayed water on buildings engulfed in flames, according to news footage from the scene.
Plumes of white smoke rose over a row of tenements as firefighters on adjoining rooftops tried to prevent the blaze from spreading. Neighboring buildings were evacuated and power was shut off to the area, Thiel said. More than 100 firefighters and other first responders descended on the block.
The blaze was declared under control at 2:43 p.m., fire officials said via Twitter.
'A lot of uncertainty'
Thiel said crews were dealing with an "active firefight" before commencing the search for possible trapped residents.
"We're still trying to figure out how many people occupied these buildings, where they were when this occurred," he said. "There's still a lot of uncertainty."
One damaged building is a commercial property, the commissioner said. Firefighters and police were going door-to-door to try to determine who might have been in the buildings.
On Thursday afternoon, utility crews were still digging up parts of the street to shut off gas valves, Thiel said.
Mike Dimatties and a friend said they were in a building one block away from the blaze when they thought their roof had collapsed, they told CNN affiliate KYW. A door in the building blew open and they rushed outside to see people running.
"I really hope nobody died," Dimatties said after discovering the nearby building collapse. "I hope they got them out. It felt like an earthquake."
Deli owner Mike Seccia told CNN affiliate WPVI the explosion was "the loudest bang" he ever heard. Seccia said he handed an employee a fire extinguisher and they headed to the scene. But the fire "became one of the worst spectacles I have ever seen," he told the station.
They tried reaching a man trapped in the rubble but were overcome by flames, Seccia told WPVI.
Gov. Tom Wolf said he has offered state assistance.
"Deeply saddened to learn of the potential loss of life and wishing for the safety of all residents and first responders," he tweeted.

More than a dozen people hurt in explosion at Beechcraft plant in Wichita
Posted: Dec 27, 2019 7:20 AM MSTUpdated: Dec 27, 2019 5:09 PM MSTUPDATE: Plant three will remain closed until further notice. Operations at the remaining facilities on the East campus will resume on December 28th.
Authorities say more than a dozen people were hurt when a nitrogen line ruptured at the Beechcraft aircraft manufacturing facility in east Wichita.
The explosion happened around 8 a.m. Friday when a 3-inch nitrogen gas line ruptured at the facility located in the 300 block of North Webb Road. Part of Plant 3 collapsed.
Sedgwick County EMS Director John Gallagher initially said 11 people were taken to hospitals and four were treated at the scene.
A spokesperson for Ascension Via Christi says St. Francis received nine patients. By late Friday afternoon, four had been treated and released and a fifth was expected to be released. Two people admitted in serious condition were listed in fair condition and a third listed as serious was been upgraded to good. The person who suffered critical injuries has been upgraded to serious condition.
Wesley Medical Center had three patients in stable condition and two others who were treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The rupture was contained, but gas continued to vent, although it posed no risk to nearby residents, officials said.
“The plant closed or shut down for the holiday season so the numbers that would have been here, were not, so it was a skeleton crew,” Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Wegner said.
The cause of the blast is under investigation.
James Fromme, a chief for the Wichita Fire Department, said there were no reports that anyone was still trapped in the building.
Stephanie Harder, a spokeswoman for Beechcraft’s parent company, Textron Aviation, said the structure where the explosion happened is part of a complex of buildings and houses the business’ composite manufacturing and experimental aircraft.
“Difficult day. Difficult news,” she said.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office, OSHA and the local lodge of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers didn’t immediately respond to phone messages.
The explosion comes at a difficult time for the aircraft industry in Wichita, which is a major sector of the Kansas economy.
Boeing announced that it would suspend production of its troubled 737 Max jetliner in January, forcing the state to consider helping to pay workers at Spirit AeroSystems, which produces the jet’s fuselages. And earlier this month, Textron Aviation announced that it would lay off an unspecified number of workers, most of them in Wichita.
The plant is in the legislative district of Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, a Wichita Republican.
“I am praying for those who are injured and my staff and I will be in close contact with community and state leaders as investigators work to learn more,” Wagle said in an emailed statement.
An emergency help line has been established for employees impacted by the explosion. Those who need assistance can call (316) 517-5252.

Pipeline explosion on the East Rand sees homes evacuated
31 December 2019 - 09:01
Reports of a pipeline explosion in Alberton, Ekurhuleni, early on Tuesday saw some residents being evacuated for safety reasons.
Eric Maloka, acting disaster and emergency management services spokesperson, said the blaze was brought under control before 11am. Authorities will remain on scene to monitor the situation.
Initially believed to be a gas pipeline, Maloka confirmed that it contained jet fuel and passed Verwoerd Park to a depot in the area.
“The residents are out of danger as the situation is under control. No one was injured and about 40 houses were evacuated, some of which were not in immediate danger, but it was done as a precaution.
“At the moment we are dealing with the secondary flames, but it’s contained,” said Maloka.
“Electrical lines and other easily triggered services are also being monitored. The local policing forum is on the ground to ensure the safety of goods belonging to residents who were evacuated,” said Maloka.

A fire on a pipeline owned by Nigeria's state oil company in the commercial capital Lagos killed three people on Sunday (January 19), a Reuters witness said.
The blaze broke out in the Abule-Egba district of the southwestern megacity. Residents said it started shortly before 8 p.m. (1900 GMT).
A Reuters television camera operator counted three dead bodies at the scene. The fire burned nearby houses and vehicles.
Another witness, resident Ayo Adewale, said there were "many dead people". Reuters was unable to verify the claim.
Many fires on pipelines in Nigeria, Africa's biggest crude oil producer, are caused by theft and sabotage. The methods used to steal oil often result in accidents that cause fires.
Oluwafemi Damilola, director general of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said he and his team were told "some undesirable elements vandalised the pipeline".
It was not immediately clear what, if any, impact the pipeline fire would have on the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
NNPC spokesman Samson Makoji late on Sunday said that the state oil company was assessing the situation.

Buildings shake, debris rains from sky as ‘MASSIVE blast’ rocks Houston (VIDEOS, PHOTOS) 24 Jan, 2020 11:11 / Updated 13 minutes ago
A massive explosion at a manufacturing plant has rattled homes in Houston, Texas with the blast echoing across the city, shattering windows and waking residents in the early hours of Friday morning.
The explosion reportedly took place at a factory in the Gessner area of the city. Video from a home doorbell captured the moment of the ferocious blast.
The blast happened around 4:25 am local time and was heard and felt up to 25 miles away. Houston Fire Department has confirmed that at least one person was injured in the incident, adding that its hazmat team is attending the scene.
Debris is reportedly raining from the sky and authorities have asked people to avoid the area while preliminary investigations are underway. Images shared on social media show the damage the blast caused to homes in the vicinity.
Local Police Chief Art Acevedo warned of increased flames and repeated smaller explosions in the aftermath of the incident. He also stated that nearby schools may be affected by the explosion.
The site of the explosion appears to be Watson Grinding and Manufacturing, a machining and manufacturing company.
The owner of the facility reportedly told local media that the explosion originated in a propylene tank. Propylene is a highly flammable gas used in manufacturing.

Explosion leaves retirement village in South Columbus rattled
Tuesday, February 4th 2020
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WYSX/WTTE) — It may be several days before investigators release the cause of a blast that happened at a retirement community in Hamilton Township early Tuesday.
Fire Chief Ralph Shillingburg said they are securing the property with a fence after an explosion around 6:40 a.m.
Shillingburg said a man and woman were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but their names will not be officially released until family is notified.
Linda Jones lives near where the blast that happened on Janice Marie Road. “I heard a big boom. It got us out of bed. We both jumped up to run to the end of our trailer, and looked out said, oh my God, that trailer is on fire.”
Firefighters said the home was completely engulfed when they arrived on the scene. They fought the flames for hours, dousing them with water, and working to reduce damage to neighboring homes.
Another neighbor had just gotten up when he heard the blast.
“I looked out my door window, that is when I seen flames, I come out here and the whole front window blew out of the trailer.
I was worried about the people getting out alive. I prayed they got out alive. They got burned but thank God they got out.”
Crews worked all day to inspect meters and gas lines.
Eric Hardgrove, Columbia Gas spokesman said, “We always take an abundance of caution to make sure there are no other risks to others in the surrounding area.”
Hardgrove said they found no evidence on Monday that natural gas was responsible for the explosion.
It left neighbors like Caroline Harrison scared. “When I looked out my front window, it was a mass of flames. You couldn’t tell how many houses was on fire, it was just a mass of flames.”
Sharon Wilson’s mobile home is only about 15 feet behind the home that exploded. Wilson felt and heard the blast, even though she hadn’t even put in her hearing aids yet.
Wilson said she couldn’t get it out of her mind that she had a Columbia Gas worker tell her she had a leak at her place this summer, and that it hadn’t been fixed yet. “He said there was a leak out back and there was a dead spot of grass, and he said that was where the leak was."
"You could smell it all the time out here. And in fact, they came back and said it would take probably a year or so, could take up to a year to get it repaired,” said Wilson. “They said it wasn’t all that dangerous, and I thought, you know, they are the experts.”
The owner of Enchanted Acres sent an email with this statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this fire. We also appreciate the quick and thorough response of the Hamilton Township Fire Department to control the damage and prevent further loss to other residents of the community. Finally, we want to thank the neighbors who rendered immediate aid and have reached out to us on how to help.
The cause of the incident remains unknown and we will assist with the investigation in any way.”

At least 15 killed as gas explosion destroys 50 houses in Lagos, Nigeria
Mar 15, 2020
n explosion at a gas processing plant on Sunday killed at least 15 people and destroyed about 50 buildings after a fire broke out in a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, emergency services said.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the explosion was triggered after a truck hit some gas cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant near the corporation's pipeline in Abule Ado area of Lagos state.
The impact of the explosion led to the collapse of nearby houses, damaged NNPC's pipeline and caused the corporation to halt pumping operations on the Atlas Cove-Mosimi pipeline, the state-owned oil company said in a statement.
"15 bodies have been recovered now. So many people have been injured," National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye told Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding that around 50 buildings were also destroyed in the explosion which was followed by a fire.
The blast happened at around 8:00 am (0700 GMT) destroyed around 50 buildings in the residential district of Abule Ado. Plumes of smoke billowed into the air as people watched, while firefighters tried to quench the flames, a Reuters witness said.
"We are recovering dead bodies as we speak and putting them in bags," said local Red Cross official Adebola Kolawale.
"We have a school here and it's a residential area. And we have a trade fair here as well," Kolawale said.
In front of a crowd of onlookers, rescue workers sought to remove rubble from a girls boarding school which has more than 250 pupils.
Explosions of pipelines and tanker trucks are frequent occurrences in Nigeria, where most people live in poverty even though the country is the biggest producer of oil on the continent, with around 2 million barrels per day.
Some accidents happen when residents try to siphon off oil or petrol from pipelines or when tanker drivers have accidents on the country's ill-maintained roads.
NNPC said that the temporary shutdown of the petroleum products pipeline would not affect the normal supply of products to the Lagos and surrounding towns.

13 injured, 70 houses damaged as explosion rocks Akure
On March 29, 20204:14 am
13 persons including worshippers were yesterday injured while over 70 houses were damaged in an early hour explosion which rocked Akure, Ondo State capital, to its foundation. The blast, which occurred at about 1am along Owo- Akure highway, few metres from the Akure Airport, cut off the road and formed crater that prevented vehicular movement to the northern part of the state.
Motorists had to make a detour through Ilu -Abo community to reconnect to the highway. Dynamites used to blast rocks and for use in quarry were said to be in transit to Edo State from Oyo when the vehicle conveying them developed mechanical fault. The fault reportedly emitted fire under the vehicle which later caused a spark and ignited the dynamites. Mostly affected were a church housing over 18 structures and Aina Awwal Int’l School with no fewer than ten structures opposite the church. But for the closure of schools and the ban on religious activities by the state government following the outbreak of COVID 19 pandemic, the casualty occasioned by the blast would have been better imagined. The effect of the explosion was reportedly felt over 10 kilometres away from the scene of the blast. Buildings mostly destroyed by the explosion include those at Aina Awwal International College which is a full boarding school and a popular church in Akure, “Possibility Prayer Ground for All Nation Church”. Speaking with newsmen, the Principal of Aina Awwal International College, Roland Kayode, said: “ We thank God that no life was lost considering the impact of the blast. I received a call around 1:20am from security guards who said something had happened in the school and that all the buildings had collapsed but couldn’t explain what led to the collapse. He couldn’t explain very well because he was shivering and devastated.
“I had to rush down here and, on getting here and learnt that a vehicle was conveying some explosives and broke down opposite the school, nobody could ascertain where the vehicle was coming from. “The security guard explained that he saw some men who parked their vehicle and that they opened the bonnet of the vehicle trying to fix the vehicle. “He said he waved his searchlight at them but said the three men who were fixing the vehicle started to run for safety and met some policemen who were on the highway and told them about the situation while they all ran for safety and there was an explosion that led to all that we are seeing now.

Explosion hits gas pipeline in Turkey’s east
Mar 31 2020 01:12 Gmt+3
Last Updated On: Mar 31 2020 01:14 Gmt+3
An explosion has damaged a pipeline carrying natural gas from Iran to Turkey near the Gürbulak border crossing point in the Turkish province of Ağrı, Gazete Duvar reported.
A fire that broke out after the explosion was extinguished by cutting the gas flow as authorities investigated the cause.
Turkish security forces have not yet made a statement on the cause of the explosion, but Duvar quoted an official from Iran’s state-run energy company as saying terrorists had attacked the pipeline.
When a Turkish armoured vehicle came under rocket attack in the same part of Ağrı early in March, the Interior Ministry also blamed terrorists, likely referring to militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has fought for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey for decades.

Iran-Turkey Gas Exports Halted After Pipeline Explosion
“The explosion occurred at a natural gas pipeline inside Turkey near Iran's Bazargan border and stopped gas exports to Turkey from 06:50 Tuesday morning,” Director of National Iranian Gas Company, Mehdi Jamshidi Dana told the state news agency IRNA.
Dana added that the Iranian gas pipeline exploded several times on Turkish soil, adding that in most cases, the PKK – a Kurdish terrorist organization – was responsible.
Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency confirmed that a blast near the Gurbulak crossing, known as Bazargan on the Iranian side, in the Agri province damaged the pipeline and halted the flow of natural gas. Firefighters extinguished the flame caused by the explosion, the report said, adding that military forces had secured the area. An investigation is ongoing to find out what caused the explosion.

An explosion rocked Berlin’s Humboldt Forum museum.
April 7 2020
Berlin’s long-delayed Humboldt Forum museum was the site of a workplace accident Wednesday morning, when two tar cookers exploded, injuring one construction worker and sending up a plume of smoke, the New York Times reports. The accident, which blackened a façade of the museum, has caused further uncertainty regarding its opening, currently scheduled for September.
Construction on the museum began in 2013, and the nearly-$700-million project has since been plagued by delays and controversy. It was scheduled to open in 2019 with a major show centered around ivory artifacts, including works on loan from the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art, but problems with the Humboldt Forum’s climate control system caused the institutions to rescind their loans, and the show was cancelled. The museum has also come under scrutiny for its possession of several hundred Benin Bronzes, with critics arguing that the works were seized improperly under colonial British rule of what is now Nigeria.
This latest accident compounds the stresses put on the institution, which was already facing uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While construction workers are deemed essential in Germany, the nationwide lockdown may affect attendance numbers come September. This is a problem faced by museums across the world—the Museum of Modern Art, which recently laid off educational staff due to forced closures, noted in an email that “it will be months, if not years, before we anticipate returning to budget and operations levels to require educator services.”

Catawba County: 60 homes damaged in explosion; no serious injuries reported
April 7 2020
There were no serious injuries in an explosion at the OneH2 plant in Long View Tuesday morning, according to Terri Byers, fire education coordinator for the Hickory Fire Department.
The 44 employees on duty at the plant are all accounted for and are safe, according to reports from the scene.
The building, however, was damaged. A press release from Catawba County said the cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
Some nearby houses also sustained damage -- such as broken windows and doors blown out of their frames -- but no residents living in the vicinity of the explosion have been reported injured.
The county press release listed approximately 60 surrounding homes as sustaining mostly minor damage from the explosion. They have all been inspected by Catawba County building inspectors and City of Hickory fire inspectors, according to the release. Only one home has been deemed uninhabitable, and the owner is aware and is being assisted. Affected homeowners are advised to contact their insurance company to begin the reporting process.
Johnathan Wilson lives on 20th Street NW near the plant. He said when the explosion occurred everything fell off the walls of his home and many of his dishes broke. Thankfully, he said he didn't have further damage to his home. "It shook the entire house from left to right," he said. "I've been in earthquakes before, and I thought it was an earthquake." Wilson said the police came by to find out if he had any damage and asked him to stay inside if he could. He said they didn't say why he should stay inside.
Responders are monitoring air quality, the county release stated. Earlier, officials on the scene said emergency officials were monitoring the air in case there was a gas leak. The measure was viewed as precautionary but residents were asked to remain in their homes.
OneH2's website describes the business:
"We deliver hydrogen fuel that's ready for "immediate use" - already converted to high-pressure gaseous fuel that takes only minutes to dispense. Our system monitors your daily fuel usage through web-based telemetics to alert us when to schedule the next fuel delivery and trailer swapout."

No major injuries reported after explosion at Maine paper mill
Updated 5:15 PM ET, Wed April 15, 2020
An explosion at Androscoggin Mill was reported Wednesday.
(CNN)A few people suffered minor injuries Wednesday after a large explosion at a paper mill in Jay, Maine, sent debris and plumes of smoke into the air.
The explosion at the Androscoggin Mill in Jay, about 70 miles north of Portland, occurred at the mill's digester area and caused a fire on the roof of that building, Sgt. Joel Davis of the state fire marshal's office told reporters.
"Fortunately nobody works in that area directly," Davis said.
No major injuries were reported, but a few people in the vicinity were treated for "minor respiratory issues" and released, he said.
A spokeswoman for the mill's owner, Pixelle Specialty Solutions, said more than 160 people were working at the time of the explosion but no one was injured.
Gov. Janet Mills acknowledged the explosion earlier Wednesday.
"I ask the people of Maine to join me in praying for the safety and wellbeing of all those in and around this historic mill. In this already difficult moment, let us summon the strength and resilience which has defined us as Maine people throughout our history and which has sustained us and carried us through our most challenging times," the governor tweeted.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation

Gas leak tied to Bloomington sewage district plant explosion; injured worker released from hospital
BLOOMINGTON — An explosion ripped through a boiler room Thursday morning at a Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District processing plant, leaving one worker with minor injuries. It took firefighters three hours to extinguish parts of the fire.
District Executive Director Randy Stein said an apparent gas leak inside the control and boiler room, between two digesters, tripped monitors at 25% below the explosive limit. An employee planned to take an air sample and check the monitors, but the building exploded as the employee opened the door, destroying much of the room and some wiring. The fire spread through the room and into the roof.
Investigators don't yet know what caused the leak or the explosion, said Randolph Township Fire District Fire Chief Randy Richards.
The injured employee was treated at a local hospital and released later Thursday. Two other employees at the plant were not injured.
“We’re still looking into what happened this morning, but we’re grateful that our employee was not seriously injured. That is the most important thing right now,” Stein said. “I also want to thank the multiple first-responders for their quick response.”

11 die, 300 hospitalised in Vizag after styrene gas leaks from polymer factory
In the villages closest to the LG plant located on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city, visuals on social media early this morning showed people lying motionless on the streets, at least two had fallen into the drains.

A gas leak at a polymer plant in Visakhapatnam has killed 11 people and forced the evacuation of thousands of people in the 3-kilometre radius. The leakage of styrene gas, which causes nausea and dizziness, took place early on Thursday when the plant was preparing to resume production later today in view of the eased Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.
In the villages closest to the plant located on the outskirts of the city, visuals on social media early this morning showed people lying motionless on the streets, at least two had fallen into the drains.
Elsewhere also, there were videos of parents carrying unconscious children in their arms on the streets and running to get medical help. Many others were seen dazed sitting on the pavements. Some more lay on the roads, a young woman among them was seen collapsing.
The municipal corporation tweeted that people in an area within approximately 3-kilometre radius of the plant were vulnerable.
The incident evoked memories of the gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal in 1984. That incident, counted among one of the world’s worst industrial disasters, had killed 3,500 people.
In Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialled Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and promised all the help that he would need. Jagan Mohan Reddy left Visakhapatnam soon after.
PM Modi also called a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority that he leads. “I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being in Visakhapatnam,” PM Modi said in a tweet before the meeting started.
According to news agency ANI, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) chief SN Pradhan said about 1,000 to 1,500 people had been evacuated by the authorities and more than 800 taken to hospital.
Most of the people taken to hospital were later discharged.
Visakhapatnam District Medical and Health Officer Tirumala Rao told reporters, around 2 pm that 300 people were still admitted to various hospitals.
Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced Rs 1 crore compensation for the next of kin of the dead besides Rs 10 lakh to people who have been put on ventilator and Rs 25,000 to those who were treated as outpatients. The chief minister also announced that a committee has been set up to probe the incident and the government was prepared to have the company shift to a different location if recommended by the panel.
Gas leaked at 2.30-3 am
The gas leak is reported to have been spotted around between 2.30am and 3 am at LG Polymers India Pvt Ltd facility at RR Venkatapuram area near Gopalapatnam.
Assistant commissioner of police Swaroopa Rani said many people who woke up to the pungent smell of the gas ran out. Many, mostly children and old people, fainted at home. Police teams that went to the villages initially had to retreat for fear of being poisoned.
Andhra industries minister M Goutham Reddy said styrene gas appeared to have leaked from the storage tank of the plant. It seems the cap of the storage tank came off and by the time the engineers sealed the gap and neutralised the liquid, the damage was done.
The company had been told to adhere to all safety protocols before reopening the plant after lockdown relaxations. “It is for the company to prove that there was no negligence on its part,” Reddy said.
South Korea-headquartered LG Chem said operations at the plant had been suspended because of a nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak and was preparing to resume operations.
“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage on residents in the town and are taking all necessary measures to protect residents and employees in collaboration with related organizations,” LG Chem, the owner of LG Polymers, said in a statement, according to news agency Reuters.
It said the spokesman separately said a night shift maintenance worker had discovered the leak from a tank. The cause of the leak is being investigated, the spokesman said.

Australian mine explosion leaves five workers with horrific injuries
9 May 2020
Five coal mine workers suffered severe injuries in a gas explosion on Wednesday at Anglo American’s underground Grosvenor Mine in central Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Four of the injured workers are in critical conditions and fighting for life while another is reportedly in a very serious condition. All sustained horrific burns to their upper torsos and airways.
Unable to receive adequate treatment in the Isaac local government region, which has limited hospital facilities, the victims were flown to Brisbane in a complex medical evacuation involving five separate planes, with retrieval doctors and nurses working on patients. Four of the injured workers were intubated and ventilated.
While emergency services were called to the mine site at 3 p.m., the aeromedical services needed to transport the injured did not arrive at the local Moranbah hospital to organise the flights to Brisbane until about 6 p.m.
Moreover, there was potential for a catastrophic loss of life to have occurred because hundreds of workers were underground at the time of the blast. Such an outcome would have overwhelmed the region’s medical facilities, as well as the aeromedical services.
Isaac authorities had already raised grave concerns about the inability of the region’s medical resources to cope with a COVID-19 outbreak after the mining industry was exempted from lockdowns. The Queensland state Labor government did not act on these concerns.
Workers at the mine had raised concerns about dangerous gas levels in the days before the explosion. Anglo American had been forced to stop work at the mine repeatedly, but only for up to two hours at a time, after high methane levels triggered underground sensors.
Anglo American said the workers were hired through labour hire company One Key Resources. The mine reportedly had about 400 labour hire employees on site. The region has 26 active coalmines employing 10,000 out-of-region workers, along with local mineworkers.
There is a rising toll of deaths and injuries in Queensland mines and quarries, including eight fatalities in the 18 months to last December. In desperate damage control, designed to cover up her government’s responsibility for these disasters, state Labor Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told the media she took any failings to protect regional workers’ “extremely seriously.” story continues...
