We'll be seeing an uptick in unusual home and business gas explosions and I'm trying to locate specific ZT on the matter.  Below is a refresher for the many gas related news articles.

Fault lines, when adjusting, do not just rip apart one day during a dramatic earthquake. They most often creep. Laying gas lines along or across a fault line is asking for an accident of this sort. Fault lines are also seldom so clearly delineated that one can go a mile in this or that direction and avoid their action. Where a slip-slide fault such as the San Andreas will often leave a clear line on the surface, this is only the surface action, not what occurs in the rock layers on either side which can fracture for a long way to either side during any movement. The gas company, or the age of the pipes, will be faulted but in truth the finger should be pointed in many directions. The public, who insist on living at such a scenic spot, is to blame. Officials, who zoned for housing are to blame. The public utility company, for allowing gas lines in the area, is to blame. But this will change nothing, while man continues to live on the San Andreas, even as it awakens. EOZT

The danger from radon gas will not be increased as a result of the pole shift. Radon gas is emitted by rock containing uranium, which is degrading. In normal circumstances, where air can circulate, it is disbursed rapidly as is any methane created by decay of organic material. The danger from these gasses comes from confinement - being trapped in a mine, a basement, or beneath the permafrost. The dangers are well known. For methane, it is explosions. An accumulation of methane gas can be identified by the smell of rotten eggs, or as some have described it, dirty socks or cabbage soup. For radon gas the danger is lung cancer, from the continual exposure to the radioactive air. Radon gas is odorless, and cannot be detected except by specialized equipment not in the hands of the average person.

In that the pole shift, or the Earth changes preceding the pole shift, can fracture rock and release pockets of either gas, survivors should be cautious about huddling in bunkers. You are safer out in the open air, or in a trench you have dug that will allow the pole shift winds to pass over you, but nothing to fall on and crush you. The fact that both methane gas and radon gas can accumulate in the bunkers of the elite is one of the reasons we have stated that they have dug their own graves. EOZT

Anyone watching the news, for instance the news on the San Bruno explosion in a distribution line close to the San Andreas Fault line, knows that gas in any form is a danger. Oil and gas refineries explode when rigid piping cracks. Oil or gas wells explode when the ground around them moves. And the gas distribution lines running under cities are no exception. They likewise will explode. Gas lines, whether along the street or within a home, are rigid. In some cases automatic shutoff valves can limit the amount of gas available for an explosion by sensing a drop in pressure, but this is always after the fact. The explosion has already occurred. Utilizing gas on a planet prone to earthquakes was a mistake to begin with, but man never thinks of the consequences when striving for modern conveniences. We have advised turning off the gas at the street, though when the street explodes and your neighbor's homes are on fire you are not likely to escape the holocaust. A better alternative is to live in an area where gas is not available, as in your rural safe location where you will be doing a form of camping while gardening. A campfire at night, for cooking and washing and a bit of friendly light before bed. Nothing explosive. EOZT

SOZT Answer: It is no accident that the New Madrid fault lies under the Mississippi River near Memphis, as rivers form in lowlands created when land pulls apart, separating the rock fingers and weakening support for the land. Thus, the Ohio River bed also is an indication of where rock fingers will pull apart. Two adjustments in Kentucky, a day apart, are not an accident, but an indication of the speed at which the stretch zone is starting to adjust. Rail lines are frequently an early harbinger of such adjustments, as they run long distances, whereas structures within cities, such as tall buildings, take up relatively little space and have a small footprint. Our warning that imploding cities will be experienced, before the hour of the shift, are in this regard. Be warmed, it will not just be your rail lines and gas and water mains that will shatter and be pulled apart during the stretch. The foundations of your tall buildings will likewise be vulnerable.EOZT

China coal mine blast traps 50: state media

A gas explosion at a coal mine in southwest China has trapped 50 miners underground, state media said Wednesday, in the latest mining disaster to hit the country.

A worker walks through a mine in Sichuan in 2009. A gas explosion at a coal mine in southwest China has trapped 50 miners underground, state media said Wednesday, in the latest mining disaster to hit the country.

The blast occurred late Wednesday afternoon in Panzhihua city in Sichuan province, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Rescue efforts were now underway, it added.

China's mines are known for being among the world's most deadly due to lax regulation, corruption and inefficiency, and accidents are common as safety is often neglected by bosses seeking quick profits.

Rapid economic growth has caused China's demand for energy, including coal, to surge. The world's second-biggest economy is the top global consumer of coal.

In April, nine miners were killed and 16 injured in a blast at a colliery in northern China's Inner Mongolia region.

Gas Leak Triggers Explosion in West L.A. Condo

One man is injured in thunderous explosion Monday night in condo near Barrington Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.

Natural gas that seeped from one condominium into another caused an explosion in a two-story building in West Los Angeles, slightly injuring a man, authorities said today.

The blast happened around 10:10 p.m. Monday in a condominium in an 18- unit building at 1535 S. Granville Ave., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Two men in a second-story unit had just finished cooking when they noticed the smell of gas in their kitchen, he said.

They were unable to locate the source of the odor, and moments later, after one of them had left the room, a "thunderous but fire-free explosion occurred behind the stove, fully toppling the appliance as well as a refrigerator nearby, and causing significant damage to walls within the kitchen and adjacent room,'' Humphrey said.

The man who was standing near the stove suffered a lacerated leg while the other was uninjured, he said. Both declined to be transported to a hospital.

Firefighters determined the leak came from a gas-fed fireplace in the unit below, Humphrey said. The gas collected in the upstairs wall space and was somehow ignited, he said.

A Southern California Gas Company representative determined the hazard had been abated, and a city Department of Building and Safety inspector deemed the affected condominium and the rest of the building safe for occupancy, Humphrey said.

10 hurt in gas tank explosion in Cebu

    Thursday, August 30, 2012

CEBU CITY (Updated) -- Residents of Sitio Paglaum in Barangay Calamba, this city, were going about their routine on Thursday afternoon when they heard an explosion.

Seconds later, they saw flames entering their homes. Ten people were hurt after a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank exploded in a junkshop in their neighborhood, with at least one victim in critical condition.

Six houses made of light materials were also damaged when the explosion resulted in a fire, with flames reaching houses located several meters from the junkshop.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Central Visayas received the alarm at 2:55 p.m., shortly after three auto LPG tanks were delivered to the junk shop owned by Joel Ramos.

Of the three tanks, one exploded.

The tank exploded after the junk shop worker, Carlito Tampon, 24, tried to remove its regulator.

The tanks were confiscated by the BFP. Tampon is in critical condition as his entire body was burned during the explosion.

Nine others suffered minor burns. Six of them are children.

The victims were Christian Labiste; Bianca Rama, 8; Kimberly Labistre, 4; Mico Temblor, 7; Angel Montemayor, 5; Gwendolyn Montemayor, 7; Jermalyn Labistre, 5; and Herminia Temblor, 26.

The victims were rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Hospital, but Herminia Temblor and her son Mico decided to go home after complaining that they were not entertained in the hospital.

Herminia and Mico suffered minor burns on their arms and legs, which they treated with a cream to ease the pain.

She said that she was attending to her sari-sari store when she noticed the flames coming toward them.

“We hid in the corner but the fire still caught us,” she said in Bisaya.

SFO2 Emiliano Daño said they have to investigate the incident further and see who will be held liable.

Erlinda Rama, 45, said they were just watching television when the flames reached their house. Her two granddaughters were injured.

We just heard an explosion and the next thing we knew, the flames entered the house, Rama said.

Daño said that as of Thursday, the damage was estimated to be only P1,000, but they have to assess again today, Friday, the extent of the damage.

BFP Central Visayas also has to consolidate their data and check if there were other people injured.

Ramos, the owner of the junk shop, said he was not there when the incident happened. He said his shop usually does not accept gas tanks because these pose danger to the public.

26 killed in gas pipeline explosion in Mexico

      Pipeline explosion in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- At least 26 oil workers were killed Tuesday and several dozen injured in a huge explosion and fire along a natural gas pipeline in northeastern Mexico, officials said.

Officials with Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, the state-owned oil giant, said they were investigating the cause of the explosion, which ripped through a distribution plant, sent orange flames into the sky and forced temporary evacuations of parts of the area in Tamaulipas state, which borders Texas.

Pemex initially said 10 people were killed and 40 injured. Later, via its Twitter account, the company raised the death toll to 26. It did not update the number of wounded but said four of the dead worked for Pemex and 22 worked for contractors. It was not clear if that included foreign companies.

Pemex's vast operations in Tamaulipas, a violent state dominated by drug cartels, have suffered thefts of gas and oil and the kidnappings of numerous workers.

Microwave oven ?  stirs a gas explosion destroying a home in a Castle Rock neighborhood.

    http://kdvr.com/2012/10/12/explosion-levels-house-in-castle-rock/

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Fire crews were responding to a natural gas explosion in the Castle Rock area that leveled a house on Friday morning.

Castle Rock Fire confirmed that a house at 6942 Sulfur Lane in the Sapphire Pointe neighborhood had been completely leveled at approximately 7:15 a.m. One woman and four children sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the blast, which also damaged two other homes.

According to the Denver Police Department, the home belonged to Lt. Jimmy Martinez. The five individuals at the house at the time of the explosion were his wife Lisa, and the couple’s four adopted children, Chuna, 6, Elen, 4, Oz, 11, and Ahbie, 7.

All of the adopted children are natives of Ethiopia, with the girls having been in the U.S. for six months and the boys about a year and a half. The family has four other children who no longer live at home and another son, 16-year-old Ryan Martinez, who was spending the night at a friends house when the explosion occurred.

Witnesses told us the entire family at 6942 Sulfur Lane was able to escape before the house collapsed, with several of the children actually riding the rubble to safety from the second story down to the ground level.

All of Sulfure Lane — approximately 20 people, according to Castle Rock Fire — has been evacuated.

Homeowners across the city reported feeling the shock waves from the blast, with one woman claiming her home shook despite being five miles away. Residents in Parker, which is approximately 16 miles away, reported being able to hear the explosion.

“I’m from southern California, and I really thought it was an earthquake,” said Wendy Emmel, who lives two streets away.

Neighbors like Emmel in the immediate area reported smelling natural gas before the explosion, with one of those neighbors calling 911. After the explosion, neighbors reported seeing insulation raining down throughout the Sapphire Pointe neighborhood as fire crews began to arrive.

There was no confirmation about what caused the explosion, though police scanner traffic indicated it could have been caused by a microwave.

Explosion Halts Iranian Gas Flow To Turkey, Again

Turkish media reports say the flow of Iranian natural gas has been halted due to an explosion in eastern Turkey.

Turkish energy officials have been quoted as saying that 28 Turkish solders were injured.

The incident took place late on October 18 near the town of Eleskirt, in Turkey's eastern province of Agri.

It is the latest explosion to hit gas pipelines in Turkey this month.

On October 8, Turkish authorities blamed the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for a blast on a pipeline in Turkey's southeast that halted the Iranian gas flow to the region.

That happened four days after an unexplained explosion on another pipeline halted the flow of Azerbaijani natural gas to Turkey via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline.

Electrical fire, possible explosion trigger downtown power outages

    _DSC0226.JPG

National Grid employees examine a manhole at the corner of Genesee and Elizabeth streets after a reported explosion on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012.

An electrical fire and a possible underground gas explosion may have triggered a series of brief power outages throughout the downtown area late this morning.

Some electrical and phone outages occurred at about 11:50 a.m., and dispatchers received a report of a minor explosion at the corner of Elizabeth and Genesee streets almost immediately thereafter.

Utica Fire Deputy Chief John Kelley said responding emergency crews found a small fire in the electrical vault under a manhole cover on the west side of Genesee Street. A National Grid crew was in the area at the time and was called to assist.

"There's no extention to any of the buildings, no power loss....," Kelly said of the extent of the fire. "It might have caused a momentary loss of power, but it's all restored."

National Grid workers could be seen kneeling or laying near the manhole shortly after noon, and occassionally leaning into the hole with flashlights. It was not immediately clear what they were looking at or for, however.

Kelly said the crew would be cutting power to the electrical vault but that it wouldn't affect any other National Grid customers.

"We can't do anything until they kill the power ... and then it usually will extinguish itself," he said of the fire.

A portion of Genesee Street was closed in both directions while crews were on the scene.

    Gas explosion in Moscow, Russia.

    http://rt.com/news/moscow-suburb-pipeline-fire-897/

A massive fire caused by a gas pipeline leak struck a Moscow suburb during the night, obliterating 17 buildings. Firemen only managed to bring the raging inferno under control three hours after it broke out.

Both gas and electricity were temporarily cut off from the Northeastern Moscow suburb of Sholkovskaya near the village of Almazovo after a gas pipe caught fire, reports RIA Novosti.

The flames of the ensuing inferno reached 10 meters in height and covered an area of approximately 600 square meters.

The fire caused significant damage to the surrounding area, destroying 17 country houses. Authorities said that no one was injured in the blaze.

The fire started at 4.50am Moscow time (00.50 GMT) and was triggered when a short-circuiting wire ignited a gas leak, according to preliminary reports.

Devastating Explosion in Quebec Industrial Plant Remains Unexplained (Nov 8) -

    http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/two-dead-after-explosion-fire-at-quebe...

Two people have died after an explosion and fire at a plant in Sherbrooke, Que. Another 19 people were injured, some with severe burns.

The explosion, which occurred at a Neptune Technologies & Bioressources facility, caused the fire.

The two dead were found in the rubble after the blast.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but several smaller explosions followed the initial one, which was so violent it set a local record for 911 calls, according to Gaetan Drouin, a local fire chief.

Martin Carrier, a Sherbrooke police spokesman, said more than 100 people in Sherbrooke and surrounding suburbs phoned within a minute.

"Just looking at the damage to the building you can see it was probably very violent," Drouin said.
"I was working in my garage and I heard a loud, 'Boom.' Then we were evacuated," a local resident said.

Another resident said the flames could be seen from blocks away. Neither resident wished to be identified.

The fire left the facility ruins, with the remaining walls scorched black.

The fire struck the plant's 15,000 litres of acetone reserves, causing concern about toxicity because the substance is flammable and can cause irritation if ingested.

Thick black smoke was seen coming from the plant and could be seen for miles.

"A lot of black smoke. You could see it everywhere in the city,” Carrier said.

Neptune Technologies & Bioressources produces and exports health products derived from marine life like Omega-3.

"We're in terrible shock over what's happened," Michel Chartrand, chief of operations for the company, told reporters at a press conference Thursday evening.

He added that plant officials will work with authorities to determine what caused the incident.

“We want to understand what happened,” he said.

Gas Leaks Discovered Beneath Israel’s Seafloor

cientists have discovered beneath the seafloor in northern Israel's Haifa Bay, a vast system of vents is leaking gassy emissions into the eastern Mediterranean Sea. If disturbed, this undersea reserve could disrupt the surrounding marine environment and might even unleash greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. At the outset of their study, researchers from the University of Haifa found more than 700 pockmarks (some at least 200 feet, or 60 meters, across) in the seabed that they suspected were active gas springs. Further geophysical investigation indicated these indentations were actually connected to a 27-square-mile (72-square-kilometer) reserve on the continental shelf, which is letting some gas escape from relatively shallow depths between 121 and 367 feet (37 and 112 meters) below sea-level. the new findings suggest that gas deposits in continental shelves might be releasing more methane into the sea than previously thought, at least in the Mediterranean and possibly in other mid-latitude areas. The scientists are planning further expeditions to the springs to better understand of the type of gas seeping from this deposit and its influence on marine life near the seafloor.

Gas explosion in Teignmouth Credit: ITV Westcountry

Firefighters and investigators from the gas company are baffled by a fire which broke out this morning near industrial units in Teignmouth.

Roadworkers noticed flames licking out from under the Tarmac on the A381 while they were digging. Nearby businesses were evacuated and emergency services were called.

So far they haven't been able to work out what happened. There is a low pressure gas main under the road, as well as low voltage electric cables but it's possible there was simply an old pocket of gas trapped under the road surface which has now escaped.

Investigators are now digging bore holes in the road surface to try to find if there is any more gas trapped or leaking. The road will be closed for some time.

Several injured at Springfield MA strip club explosion.
    http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/23/us/massachusetts-explosion/index.html...

Eighteen people were injured early Friday evening when a gas-fueled explosion ripped through a strip club in the western Massachusetts city of Springfield, the city's mayor said.

Those in the club and nearby buildings had evacuated by the time the blast occurred at 5:25 p.m., Mayor Dominic Sarno said.

Nine of those injured were Springfield firefighters, four were gas company employees, two were police officers, two were civilians, and one was a municipal water and sewer department employee, the mayor said. Earlier, a police sergeant said more civilians were hurt and all were transported to Baystate Medical Center or Mercy Medical Center.

"Through God's mercy, we are not aware of any fatalities," Sarno said.

People as far away as South Hadley, 10 miles north, felt the blast.

Video showed that the facade of one building was shredded by the blast, while glass from blown-out windows littered streets blocks away.

Besides the leveled multistory structure that housed Club Scores -- which Sarno referred to as "ground zero" -- 12 buildings suffered significant damage, and at least a dozen others had collateral damage, Springfield fire Commissioner Joseph Conant said.

Columbia Gas spokeswoman Sheila Doiron told reporters Friday that a call about a strong gas odor came in at around 4:20 p.m.

The gas company's employees were on site in about 25 minutes, and they shut off the gas to the building soon thereafter, according to Conant. The explosion came 15 minutes later.

Overhead video from CNN affiliate WWLP showed what appeared to be police lights flashing near an otherwise calm scene until a huge burst of fire soared into the sky. That was followed by thick plumes of black smoke.

Within hours, Conant said firefighters were able to bring "the fire situation ... under control."

The officials who spoke at Friday night's news conference said they had no knowledge that any of the injuries suffered in the blast and its aftermath are life-threatening.

None of the eight patients brought into Baystate Medical Center are in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Jane Albert. She said hospital officials have been told they no more injured are coming.

Authorities are working to determine what caused the fire, with state authorities assisting local first responders -- including members of the city's arson and bomb unit -- at the scene. Doiron, from Columbia Gas company, said "there have been no measurable readings of natural gas at this point" that might indicate more widespread leaks.

A shelter has been set up at nearby Central High School for anyone displaced by the explosion and evacuations in the vicinity, said Sarno.

More on the gas explosion in Springfield, Massachusetts.

"The blast levels 2 buildings, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.

People were knocked off their feet by the blast, NBC affiliate WWLP-TV reported.

Those injured in the blast included nine firefighters, four gas company employees, two police officers,  1 water and sewage employee and two civilians.

Two hospitals treated the injured people, though none were in critical condition, officials said.

The blast was heard for miles and one of the buildings destroyed was a strip club that had just been evacuated due to a strong natural gas odor."

It looked as though there had been "a missile strike," police Sgt. John Delaney said.

"It's a miracle ... Nobody got killed," Delaney said.

An explosion at a restaurant in northern China has killed 14 people and injured 47.

The government of Shouyang county in Shanxi province says on its official website that a gas leak caused the blast and triggered a fire Friday evening at the Xinyangyang hotpot restaurant.

The official Xinhua News Agency says six people were killed at the scene and eight others died at a hospital. Seventeen people were severely injured.

Xinhua says the explosion was so powerful that it shattered the windows of the two-story building that houses the restaurant and shops.

Hotpot dining is popular among Chinese, with diners gathering around a steaming pot in which they cook meats and vegetables.

Restaurant explosions are common in China, though a death toll this high is rare.

Thousands of Natural Gas Leaks Found in Boston

Beneath the streets of Boston is an aging network of natural gas pipelines that delivers fuel to heat homes and power appliances but also threatens to feed fires and even cause explosions. Highlighting the need for repairs, a new study detected more than 3,300 natural gas leaks throughout the city.

Researchers from Boston University and Duke logged 785 road miles (1,263 kilometers) in the city, driving around in a GPS-equipped car with a device to measure methane, the chief chemical component of natural gas. The team discovered 3,356 separate natural gas leaks — some of them potentially hazardous.

“While our study was not intended to assess explosion risks, we came across six locations in Boston where gas concentrations exceeded the threshold above which explosions can occur,” Nathan Phillips, associate professor at BU, said in a statement.

The leaks were associated with old cast-iron underground pipes and were distributed evenly across all neighborhoods, regardless of socioeconomic differences, the researchers said. Their findings were detailed online this week in the journal Environmental Pollution.

Concerns about aging natural gas pipelines aren’t unique to Boston. Each year, pipeline failures cause an average of 17 deaths, 68 injuries, and $133 million in property damage across the nation, according to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

A pipe explosion near a natural gas plant in Goldsmith created an approximately 250-foot fireball and burned about 4 miles of natural gas Wednesday evening.

The explosion happened at about 6 p.m. at a pipe about 30 yards from Highway 158 near the main entranceway to DCP Goldsmith Plant, said Odessa Fire and Rescue Senior Captain Kevin Jackson, acting as battalion chief. No one was injured.

The cause of the explosion remained unclear two hours later.

The pipe was 16 inches in diameter and funneled gas at 500 psi belonging to the company West Texas Gas, Jackson said. The company is headquartered in Midland.

Responding firefighters found and contacted the gas company, which shut off supply to the pipe, Jackson said. The fire, which destroyed a nearby welding shed, burned out by about 7:30 p.m.

The blast and fire destroyed 12 to 15 utility poles and trashed the road, Jackson said.

"It looks like the moon," he said. "There are caliche and rocks all over. There are rocks in the road the size of bowling balls."

Five OFR units responded, along with West Odessa and Goldsmith volunteer firefighters. Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety blocked of roads nearby such as Gulf Avenue.

Gas pipe explosion destroys entire Chinese street as it rips through upmarket residential area

    By Daniel Miller

    |

These two workmen can hardly believe their eyes as they survey the damage after a massive gas pipe explosion destroyed an entire street in an upmarket residential area of one of China's most prosperous cities.

The stunned pair were looking at a hefty workload following a series of blasts which tore through thick layers of concrete and tarmac in the town of Beihai, in southern China's Guangxi Province.

It is not known exactly what caused the explosion which was so powerful it rocked nearby flats and left the pleasant, palm-tree tree-lined road resembling a war zone.

Behai, which means 'north of the sea' in Chinese, is a thriving port city on the north shore of the Gulf of Tonkin. Business has boomed in recent years to the extent it is predicted to be the world's fastest growing city between 2006 and 2020.

Explosion destroys Newport house; 2 critically injured

    Video in link.

NEWPORT, Ky. - A Northern Kentucky home was destroyed after an explosion at the residence Friday morning.

Newport fire officials say an explosion caused a large fire at the home located in the 1600 block of Waterworks Road in Newport at about 4:10 a.m. Witnesses said the explosion sounded like a “war zone.”

Officials say natural gas was fueling the fire, but the cause of the actual explosion is being investigated.

"We start out looking for if there was any smell of gas or anything they reported beforehand. If there was some type of natural gas leak in the house. But the explosion itself could've caused some type of pipe break," said Newport Fire Captain Patrick Krogman. "We start there looking at where exactly people were and what happened or what they saw when the explosion occurred."

Officials say Ida Neal and her son Dwayne Luttrell sustained critical burns in the explosion and emergency crews transported them to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. Neal suffered burns to her face and hands will be released from the hospital in the next 2-3 days.

Luttrell suffered third degree burns over 78 percent of his body and will have to remain hospitalized for the next 2-4 months for treatment. He is now on a breathing tube, officials say.

Police say Neal and her son were responsive and talking when they left the scene.

A third victim, Neal's husband Paul, sustained a compressed fracture in his back and cuts on his hand.

Newport resident, Andy Crail said he heard the explosion from his neighboring house and ran outside to see what happened.

“I sounded like a bomb went off, I didn’t know what to think,” Crail said.

Crail and other witnesses found a victim at the scene and pulled him to safety.

"It was just the first thing, the right thing to do, I guess," Crail said.

Fire officials commended neighbors for stepping up during a crisis.

"It's great. You have to be careful sometimes doing that, we've had neighbors that jumped into help and got themselves in trouble, but you know, if you can help somebody out, especially with this extreme cold -- they took one patient into the house across the street -- that's what it's all about, helping each other," Krogman said.

The house went up in flames after the explosion and one officer said the house "fell into a pit" when it exploded. The frigid temperatures have made fighting the fire more difficult. The water quickly turned into ice, creating slick conditions for the firefighters.

"We're dealing with fighting the fire, which is dealing with fighting with the heat, and those type of problems, and going to the extreme opposite, dealing with the cold and frostbite," Krogman said.

An estimated cost of damages has not yet been released.

The family had two dogs inside the home at the time of the fire that have not been located.

Neal lost her only other child, a son in his late 20s, to cancer last month.

Officials have not released any additional details about the explosion at this time.

Residents allowed back into apartments after gas main break

Updated: Monday, 28 Jan 2013, 5:21 PM EST
    Published : Monday, 28 Jan 2013, 4:04 PM EST

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Hundreds of apartment residents have been allowed to return home, after a gas main break in downtown Springfield sent them onto the streets for more than an hour.

Firefighters evacuated the apartment buildings around 104 Spring Street in downtown Springfield just before 4:00 Monday afternoon.

Dennis Leger, Aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that a piece of construction equipment had stuck a gas main, causing a leak of natural gas.

Because the gas is leaked and not into any closed space, they were able to shut off the gas, check each apartment, and have people go back inside after 5:00 P.M. Only the elderly residents of St. Luke's Home on Spring Street were still not allowed to return as of 5:15.

During the evacuation, PVTA buses were brought-in to pick elderly residents up and to take them to a shelter.

Nearby residents told 22News about the frightening situation.

“The lady that lives above me was banging on my door, and she told me ‘come outside, there’s a gas leak, everybody has to go out.’ So we just came out, and we’ve been standing here since,” Spring Street resident Diana Mirayes said.

The area that has was evacuated is just a short distance away from Worthington Street, where a gas explosion the day after Thanksgiving injured several people, and destroyed three buildings.

Mexico's Pemex blast blamed on a buildup of gas
    February 5, 2013

(CNN) -- A deadly blast that killed at least 37 people at the headquarters of Mexico's state-run oil giant was caused by a buildup of gas in the basement, an official said Monday.

Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam told reporters that no traces of explosives were found at the scene.

"The cause is clear; it's a gas explosion," he said, adding that the gas in question is believed to be methane.

The exact source of the gas remains unclear. Investigations are ongoing, Murillo said.

Blast rocks Pemex tower in Mexico City

At least 37 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the blast, which took place Thursday at an administrative building in the Pemex office complex in Mexico City.

Pemex is Mexico's powerful and much-criticized state oil monopoly.

Of those injured, at least 28 remained hospitalized Monday night, according to the health ministry.

Thousands of people work at the company's headquarters, which includes a 54-story building that is nearly 700 feet tall. The annex where the explosion happened is adjacent to the tower.

Employees at the annex said that the basement of the building, where the explosion originated, housed a water treatment facility, storage areas and archives. The first floor, which also was heavily damaged, is where the company's human resources team worked.

A makeshift memorial for the victims has sprung up outside the complex, where handwritten notes, flowers and candles line a fence.

    Explosions rock downtown Milwaukee

Authorities are investigating multiple reports about explosions in downtown Milwaukee Sunday night at the intersection of Jefferson and Mason streets.

The fire and blast which tore up a city street, rocked buildings and knocked out power -- burned out underground lines.

Because the area remains unsafe, WISN12 News was not allowed below ground, but instead asked We Energies crews to shoot video to show the damage.

Utility workers had to wait until the fire was out and the air was safe before they could begin their repair work.

"There's lots of soot in the hole, and everything's covered because of the fire," We Energies crew leader Steven Szlarski said.

"They're working in confined spaces. They're working with live wires. It's complicated, dangerous work," We Energies spokeswoman Cathy Schulze said.

The investigation into the cause now begins.

"We need to know why this electrical fault occurred, and can come to the brunt of the cause so we can assure that this doesn't happen again," Schulze said.

Above ground, on the spot where the blast lifted manhole covers and sent smoke and flames upward, work continued in plain view.

But several feet below, the search for a cause and the assessment of damage goes on, out of sight.

"Up here in the corner is fiber optic, that little white wisp. And as I pan back and come over to the right, here's the other end of the fiber optic, that melted completely," Szlarski said.

The power company said it's unclear how long it may take find the source of the problems.

Five people die in gas explosion

    ČTK |
    18 February 2013
It is not yet clear what caused the explosion. (ČTK)

Five poeple were killed and eleven injured in a gas explosion that demolished a prefabricated house in the centre of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm in the early hours on Sunday. One person is still missing.

Two people suffered very serious burns. They are in a life threatening condition at the burns centre of the Teaching Hospital in Ostrava, north Moravia. A woman suffered burns on 90 percent of the body and a man has burns on 60 percent of the body.

The explosion occurred at c. 4:00 on Sunday and a fire broke out subsequently.

Rescuers had to pull down almost the whole house to have access to the place of accident. Three sniffer dogs are searching the debris.

One voluntary firefighter was also wounded, but his life is not threatened. He suffered burns and probably head and chest injuries.

Rescuers evacuated several inhabitants from surrounding houses.

The accident was most probably caused by a gas explosion on the first floor of the four-storey building, police spokesman Zbynek Tomsik said.

However, the real cause of the explosion is yet to be investigated.

    In Alberta a gas explosion!

Crews continue to investigate what caused a gas leak that sparked a Thursday afternoon explosion in the Fort.

The brother of a Fort Saskatchewan man who died as the result of a residential explosion last Thursday said he tried in vain to get to the hospital before his brother died.

But he wasn’t able to make it in time.

Following the basement explosion, which was attributed to a gas leak, three plumbers were rushed to hospital and were deemed to be in critical condition by Occupational Health and Safety.

At around 6 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, 33-year-old Jason Michalycia succumbed to his injuries.

According to OHS, he had suffered burns to 95 per cent of his body.

Jason’s brother Curtis lives in Calgary, and expressed his regret over not being able to see his brother one more time over Facebook.

“My brother Jason is gone, never got to say goodbye to him. Stuck in Calgary, original flight got cancelled. R.I.P bro.”

The other two who were in the explosion, Wes and Wilford “Wilf” Michalycia, remain in hospital with burns to 80 per cent and 50 per cent of their bodies, respectively.

    The pair were Jason’s cousins.

All three worked for Wil-Flo Plumbing and Heating, according to Wes and Wilford’s father, Roman Michalycia, who said they were most likely working on water and sewage lines at the time of the blast.

Mystery Explosion Levels Quebec Motel (Mar 1)
Residents in the city of Trois-Rivieres were reeling after a violent explosion leveled the Bar-Motel Turco at noon.

An enormous cloud of smoke could be seen billowing from the smouldering spot.  Some passersby say they heard two loud explosions.  Bricks and other debris littered the street outside the two-storey motel at 21 Courteau St.

A man working at a garage across the street described the sound of the explosion as "phenomenal."

While several people were in the motel during the explosion, the bar - where the blast occurred - was empty.

A witness said he saw the motel-bar lift in the air due to the explosion's impact.

"Debris was falling from the sky, there were bricks, pieces of windows," the witness said.

Trois-Rivieres is located on the St. Lawrence River, between Montreal and Quebec City.

    Gas explosion rattles Uintah County

JENSEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A gas explosion broke windows in a quarter mile radius from Adler Hot Oil Service Company in Jensen, Utah.

It lit up the early morning sky Saturday at 12:13 a.m. "I've never seen anything like this before," said truck wash manager, Jamie Cox.

Investigators say gas fueled the blast, which destroyed eight near-by buildings and at least one home in a 600 yard radius of the explosion.

"When it turned light the devastation was unreal.  It looked like you dropped an atomic bomb," said business owner Brett Woods.

Jamie Cox says the blast's shock wave rattled him awake in his Vernal home 15 miles away.

He quickly traveled Jensen. "I saw the devastation and it was heartbreaking.  There was one home that was pushed about four inches off the foundation," Cox said.

No one was hurt or killed. The timing of the blast saved lives. A cafe across the street from the explosion is often filled with hungry customers.

Business owners are marveling the sheer power of the explosion as they sift through the scattered debris.  "It carried insulation a quarter of a mile away so I mean the blast was large-- very very large," Cox said.

Locals tell ABC 4 this same building exploded about two years ago.

The explosion will leave hundreds without jobs.

A gas leak caused the explosion. Investigators suspect it was propane.

Gas explosion in China injures 20

    Last Updated: Monday, March 04, 2013, 14:16

Beijing: More than 20 workers were injured today in a gas explosion at a construction site in an underground shopping street in northeast China's Liaoning province.

The explosion at about 9 am local time, was triggered by a gas leak from underground pipelines at a construction site in the underground shopping street in front of a shopping mall in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, the city's publicity department said in a statement.

Some 40 workers were at the scene when the blast occurred, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Some of the seriously injured victims have been admitted to two hospitals for emergency treatment, injured workers and their relatives said.

Staff of a shopping mall located just in front of the site said that they heard "three huge bangs", and felt the "ground shaking".

Many workers came out with blood stains on their clothes, they said. The shock wave of the blast shattered windows of cars and buildings nearby.

The explosion could be felt from over a kilometre away, local residents said.

Explosion injures at least 10 at American Steel in Granite City

UPDATED at noon with conditions of workers taken to Mercy Hospital.

GRANITE CITY • At least 10 workers were injured this morning in an apparent gas explosion at the American Steel plant in Granite City, authorities said.

Granite City Assistant Fire Chief Jim Snelson said gas ignited at the plant shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Three of the 10 workers were in critical condition Thursday after being flown by medical helicopters to St. Louis-area hospitals, according to hospital staff. At least one of them was burned and others may have suffered inhalation burns.

Seven of the workers were receiving treatment at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City for treatment of smoke inhalation. A hospital spokeswoman said their conditions ranged from "stable to guarded." Two others were in critical condition at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.

American Steel Foundries is at 1700 Walnut Street, at Niedringhaus Avenue. It is a division of Amsted Rail Co.

No one from the company was available for comment Thursday but Scott Hassall, business manager for Elecrical Workers Local 309 that represents some plant employees, said the blast was in an area where the plant produces bolsters, or heavy central frames for railroad car wheel trucks.

Hassall said he could not talk about the incident but could only explain what the line produces where it happened. He said the plant casts the bolsters and then finishes the cooled product with grinding machines. He said the accident occurred where the grinding, or finishing, takes place.

He said his members were in the plant talking with investigators, which is why he didn't yet want to discuss the accident.

The workers at the plant also are represented by the United Steel Workers, Machinists, and Pattern Makers unions.

Karl Armstrong, assistant area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration office in Fairview Heights, said an inspector has been dispatched to the plant to begin an investigation.
