U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) were ordered to start arresting visitors and staff who refuse to wear a mask on the House side of the Capitol complex starting Thursday, according to a police memo issued by new USCP Chief Thomas Manger that was obtained by a member of Congress.

Police were also advised not to arrest members of Congress for failing to wear masks but to report the lawmakers' noncompliance to the House sergeant-at-arms, the memo says.

World’s third-busiest port remains partially shut in China for the sixth day in a row

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan container port, the world’s third-busiest, remained partially closed for a sixth day Monday, amid ongoing concern over whether the shutdown will disrupt trade from the region longer term.

The port hasn’t published any updates on its operations since Wednesday, when it halted all inbound and outbound container services at its Meishan terminal after one employee tested positive for Covid-19.

Consultant GardaWorld estimated the terminal accounted for about 25% of container cargo through the port, though Ningbo-Zhoushan had said it would redirect ships to other terminals and adjust operating hours at other docks.

An employee at the port’s media center said they had no new information to share. No new infections have been reported at the port since the initial case.

New Zealand has announced a snap lockdown after a man tested positive for Covid, the first case in six months.

The case was detected in Auckland, which will be in lockdown for a week, while the rest of the country will be in lockdown for three days.  Authorities say they are working on the assumption that the new case was the Delta variant.

Just around 20% of its population has been fully vaccinated. Coromandel, a coastal town where the infected person had visited, will be in lockdown for seven days too.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the toughest "level 4" rules were required - closing schools, offices and all businesses with only essential services remaining operational.

Scientists research plants as growable, edible mRNA vaccines (September 16, 2021)

Scientists at the University of California, Riverside are studying whether they can turn edible plants like lettuce into mRNA vaccine factories. The project’s goals are threefold: showing that DNA containing the mRNA vaccines can be successfully delivered into the part of plant cells where it will replicate, demonstrating the plants can produce enough mRNA to rival a traditional shot, and finally, determining the right dosage.
“Ideally, a single plant would produce enough mRNA to vaccinate a single person,” said Juan Pablo Giraldo who is leading the research. “We are testing this approach with spinach and lettuce and have long-term goals of people growing it in their own gardens. Farmers could also eventually grow entire fields of it.”

Almost 200,000 Covid-19 testing kits recalled, due to ‘manufacturing issue’ that delivered FALSE positives

Ellume, an Australian company that supplied over 3.5 million FDA-approved Covid-19 testing kits to the US, has now recalled nearly 200,000 of them due to an unspecified manufacturing issue that resulted in false positives.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a notice on Tuesday alerting the public of “the potential for false positive results” with certain lots of Ellume’s Covid-19 Home Test, a rapid antigen kit used to detect the coronavirus using nasal swabs and a smartphone app.

'Isolate if you have Covid-19 symptoms but test negative'

A director of public health is advising people to isolate if they have Covid-19 symptoms even if they subsequently receive a negative PCR test result.

GPs in the West said they were seeing "a stream of patients" who had received positive lateral flow tests, who went on to receive negative PCR results.

The UK Health Security Agency said it was investigating the cause.

But one Independent SAGE adviser has said self-isolating after a negative test may not be practical for some.

While it is understood lateral flow device (LFD) tests can sometimes produce a false negative, false positives are much rarer.

The UK Health Security Agency said it had been made aware of "some areas across the country" anecdotally reporting positive LFD results with subsequent negative PCR tests.

CHICAGO (NewsNation Now) — Southwest Airlines has canceled or delayed hundreds of flights this weekend, leaving many passengers stranded during the holiday weekend.
According to FlightAware, a website that provides real-time flight insights, Southwest canceled 808 flights on Saturday and over 1,000 flights on Sunday.
That’s 27% of the airline’s scheduled flights on the nation’s largest domestic airline.
The airline blamed the problem on air traffic control issues and weather. In a tweet on Saturday, Southwest issued a statement asking for customers to be patient as it works through their technical problems.
However, aviation and airline sources tell NewsNation that the ATC issues causing the cancellation of nearly 1,000 Southwest Airlines flights were actually caused by a huge number of air controllers calling in sick at the Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Center.
The Jacksonville Control Center is one of the nation’s largest air traffic control centers that handle flights going to and from Florida. The sources also reported that the “sick out” relates to low morale and anger over vaccine mandates.
The FAA released the following statement on Sunday regarding flight delays and cancelations.

‘Never have I seen anything like this’: Staffing shortages cancel over 140 ferry sailings on Friday.  Dozens of Washington state ferry sailings have been canceled Friday, due to staffing shortages across numerous routes.

The first cancellations for Friday were announced late Thursday night, when Washington State Ferries said a pair of morning sailings for the Seattle/Bremerton route were being canceled due to a staffing shortage.  A reduced schedule was then announced for the Fauntleroy/Vashon for the same reason, followed by the cancellation of dozens of Friday sailings for the Edmonds/Kingston ferry.

More cancellations then began flooding in shortly before 5 a.m. Friday, including 12-hours worth of sailings for the Mukilteo/Clinton route, as well as all sailings for the day through 8:50 p.m. after a single roundtrip at 6:10 a.m. for the Anacortes/San Juan Islands ferry.

“20 years doing traffic in the city, NEVER have I EVER seen anything like this,” KIRO Radio Traffic Reporter Tracy Taylor tweeted.

As of 6:45 a.m. Friday, Taylor reports a total of 141 cancelled sailings for the day, as well hours-long delays for many other routes.

According to Washington State Ferries, four routes have been reduced to a single boat, another is down to two boats, and a one other is down to three.

Addressing the staff shortage on Twitter, WSF noted that “COVID-19 restrictions have not allowed us to hire or train new recruits at the same rate as prior to the pandemic.” Despite that, over 100 new crew members have been added so far this year.

While WSF typically ramps up hiring once a year before the summer begins, it says it is now “continuously recruiting new employees” to account for its lack of staffing.

Businesses are increasingly mandating that their workers get a COVID-19 vaccine, citing health concerns and sweeping new federal requirements for large employers. Those who do not follow company policies are in many cases subject to termination of employment.

Unemployment benefits are generally available to those who were let go through no fault of their own, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. But if someone was fired due to misconduct or violating a company policy, they might be ineligible to collect unemployment.

Multiple companies and organizations including United Airlines, UCHealth System and Novant Health have or intend to fire unvaccinated workers. In fact, 46% of organizations plan to institute a vaccine mandate where legally permissible, according to a recent survey by research firm Gartner Inc., which could mean thousands of people could potentially be forced to leave their jobs.

As COVID-19 spread to hundreds of millions of people around the world, another potentially lethal disease — influenza — hardly reared its head at all. And seasonal flu rates globally have been so low for the past 18 months, it looks as though one flu virus has been stamped out altogether.

Two studies — one published in Nature Reviews Microbiology in September and the other currently under review — show one of four flu viruses that infect humans each year hasn't been detected anywhere in the world since April 2020.

So does that mean it's gone for good? It's still too early to say.

The extent to which the flu has been crushed by the COVID-19 pandemic is extraordinary.

On average, around 100,000 flu cases are detected in Australia each year, and a few hundred people die from it, although those numbers do bounce around year to year.

In 2019, one of our worst flu seasons in recent times, more than 300,000 people became sick and more than 900 died from flu.

Romania revives COVID-19 restrictions as hospitals struggle. In Romania, only 35 percent of adults are fully inoculated against COVID-19 compared with an EU average of 74 percent.

Dr Petruta Filip is working 100-hour weeks at a Bucharest hospital which, like hospitals throughout Romania, is struggling under an onslaught of COVID-19 patients in a country with worryingly low vaccination rates.

Morocco has announced the suspension of all “direct” passenger flights due to the new coronavirus variant, Omicron. The measure comes into effect Monday and will be in place for at least two weeks.
