Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Powerful Eruptions Continue at Russia's Shiveluch Volcano (Mar 4)

The volcano is in an intense phase of activity, characterized by strong explosions and partial collapses of the growing lava dome accompanied by tall ash plumes and pyroclastic flows.

An explosion on March 4 produced an ash plume that rose to flight level 370, i.e. 37,000 ft (11 km) altitude, Tokyo VAAC reported.

Aviation color code is red. Aircraft on the N-America - Japan routes are advised to avoid the area.

On 28 Feb, a series of explosions and collapses produced tall plumes >10 km altitude and large pyroclastic flows up to approx. 4 km distance.

More on the powerful volcanic eruption in Chile today.

Chile's Villarica Volcano Sends Lava 3,000ft High (Mar 3)

Chile's Villarica volcano has erupted, sending lava 3,000ft into the air and cascading down the hillsides, and forcing the evacuation of over 3,000 people

The Villarica volcano in Chile has erupted after weeks of rumbling, shooting a column of lava 3,000ft into the sky in the early hours of Tuesday.

The 3am eruption forced more than 3,000 people from their homes and sent streams of lava down the mountain. One of the world's most active volcanoes, the 9,000-foot mountain is located in Chile's central valley about 400 miles south of the capital, Santiago.

Rodrigo Peñailillo, the Chilean interior minister, said: "We are continuing to evacuate people who are affected by the red alert zones.

"The National Geology and Mines Service (ONEMI) is evaluating possible flooding, which could be caused by melting on the volcanic cone."

The symmetrical volcano is situated on the shores of Lake Villarica, by the town of the same name. The region is a tourist hotspot, attracting thousands of people annually to climb the nearby hills and hike in the surrounding forests.

According to ONEMI, 2,100 people have been evacuated from the town of Pucon - one of the most popular tourist towns in Chile, and a centre for outdoor sports.

In the Villarica district, 20 people have been evacuated, while a further thousand people have left the "comuna" - district - of Panguipulli.

Red alert eruption of Villarrica- CHILE is maintained at least until 09:00 hours

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

So said the head of the ministry, Rodrigo Peñailillo. The authority urged people to remain calm and insisted that the evacuation is maintained because of the risk of landslides.

SANTIAGO Interior Minister Rodrigo Peñailillo, said this morning that until this morning a total of 3,385 people evacuated due to the eruption produced was recorded in the Villarrica volcano this morning. At the same time, confirmed that Red Alert status determined by the increased activity of the solid will remain at least until 09:00 am this morning, due to the risk of floods caused by melting snow in the mountains . The alert applies in the communes of Villarrica, Pucón and Curarrehue in the Araucania Region, and the Panguipulli, in Los Ríos.

The authority confirmed the suspension of classes in the three communes cited in La Araucanía and the Coñaripe, Los Rios. The same applies in the five colleges established as shelters in the latter region. Peñailillo said that evacuees, some 2,100 people were in safe areas in Pucon, and 265 people were in the same situation Licanray. In Coñaripe, Los Rios, 1,000 people also moved to safe areas...

The Secretary of State referred to the condition generated by the phenomenon after a meeting of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE). Following the report delivered about 6:18 pm, the head of the Interior moved to La Moneda to participate in a cabinet meeting convened by President Michelle Bachelet.

The eruption occurred at 03:00 when the volcano lava and smoke emitted at altitudes of about 3 km. The phenomenon caused residents of Pucón and other nearby towns began to evacuate their homes spontaneously. The risk of generating lahars, water flows and sediment that slide from volcanic cones eruptions experience, is one of the greatest dangers associated with such phenomena.

Alaska flights canceled over ash from Russian volcano

Updated 0712 GMT (1512 HKT) March 1, 2015

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/01/us/alaska-volcano-flights-cancele...

(CNN)A volcano in Russia led to the cancellation of flights in Alaska over the weekend.

"We canceled two roundtrip flights between Anchorage and Bethel, and Anchorage and Nome after an advisory of low visibility," Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Halley Knigge said.

Ash from Russia's Shiveluch volcano was the culprit behind the flight disruptions Saturday, said Jeff Freymueller, a scientist at the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The volcano erupted Friday, shooting ash into the atmosphere some 30,000 feet. Winds blew the ash cloud across the Bering Sea and into western Alaska, Freymueller said.

Shiveluch, which has been erupting consistently, caused a similar incident in January, he said.

The airline will only operate flights when it's safe to do so and will not fly into areas of reported ash.

Alaska Airlines was uncertain if additional flights would be canceled, but said it's monitoring the situation.

Three volcanoes are erupting on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula: Shiveluch, Klyuchevskoy and Karymsky.

Mexico's Popocatepetl Volcano Spews Ash, Cancels Flights (Feb 25)

A series of explosions at  Popocatepetl volcano tossed hot rocks 700 metres down the volcano's cone and sent a column of ash nearly 4 kilometres into the sky.

It was the second time in 10 days the Popocatepetl volcano east of Mexico City spewed ash into the sky, forcing cancellation of flights at the nearby Puebla International Airport.

A statement from the government's airport oversight agency Wednesday said operations in Puebla were suspended at 6:30 a.m. (7:30 a.m. EST) to allow airport personnel to clean runways and other areas covered in ash.

On February 15, a similar eruption caused the cancellation of flights at the airport.

Elevated volcanic activity reported in Sumatra and Kamchatka.

Sinabung (Sumatra)

A high-level eruption at 15:22 UTC with an ash plume rising to 45,000 ft (15 km) altitude was reported a short time ago.

On Feb 19, Mt. Sinabung spewed volcanic material the farthest since 2010, burning houses in two villages in a 3-to-5-kilometer radius to the volcano’s south.

Fortunately, no victims were reported as residents had been permanently relocated.

Temburun villager Nelsi Singarimbun said he had not seen a lava flow reach as far as it did on Wednesday since the volcano erupted in 2010.

“Usually, the Mount Sinabung lava flow never reaches that far, but this time it reached Suka Meriah and Gurukinayan villages. This is the farthest I’ve ever seen,” Nelsi told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Nelsi said he witnessed the enormous molten lava flow from his home located 4.5 km west of the volcano.

He added that the lava flow felled trees and razed homes in Suka Meriah and Gurukinayan from 7:20 p.m. until 8:10 p.m.

“The lava flow, which lasted for around 50 minutes, burned trees and some homes there.”

Nelsi added that the incident had caused fear among residents living around Sinabung as the lava flow had reached settlements.

Payung villager Alfinus Ginting also expressed fear about the increased volcanic activities of late.

“Residents have been on the alert at home from last night until this afternoon. They are afraid because Sinabung has continued to erupt lately.”

The crater lake of Mt Ruapehu, located on North Island / New Zealand has passed since the beginning of December 2014 from 15 ° C to over 40 ° C, according to the report of the GNS of January 30, 2015.

Measurements carried out in mid-January show changes in lake chemistry, particularly increased volcanic gas discharge, convection currents and discoloration: it went from blue-green to pale gray. All these changes indicate a new warming of the hydrothermal system beneath the summit lake.
