What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

PHUKET: Workers from the Phuket Highways Office tomorrow will begin repairs to a gaping hole along the southbound lane on the bypass road left behind by the week of heavy downpours across the island.
“We have closed the outside lane and placed warning signs and cones to inform motorists of the hazard,” Phuket Highways Office Director Samak Luedwonghad told the Phuket Gazette today.
Flashing warning lamps have also been set up to prevent nighttime drivers from plunging into the sinkhole, he added.
“We will begin repairs tomorrow, as we have yet to set up the correct equipment at the site,” Mr Samak said.
Meanwhile, Kathu Municipality workers will begin clearing away a landslide that covered Luang Sua Road, which crosses the hills from Kathu to Wichit.
“We are aware of that hazard too, but that road is under Kathu Municipality’s responsibility,” Mr Samak explained.
“Both of these hazards were caused by the non-stop rain we’ve had for the past five days.”

A Ukrainian man miraculously managed to escape unharmed after the road collapsed underneath him as he was driving.
Gordey Efremov was travelling home in the city of Dnipropetrovsk in south-eastern Ukraine, when the ground suddenly vanished below.
Images from the accident show Mr Efremov's 4x4 lying on its side in a giant pothole, practically swallowed by the road.
Mr Efremov had been travelling in his Lada Niva when he suddenly found the ground vanishing underneath him.
He said: ‘Because of the rain, traffic was going slowly anyway and then when the car in front of me stopped I put on the brakes, and slow down.
‘Then I suddenly got this sinking feeling and before I knew it was disappearing into the road.
‘The car tipped onto its side and muddy waters started to flood in through the air vents and door.
‘I had to open the window above and climb out where some people helped me onto the street.
‘I escaped without a scratch but that's more than can be said from the car which was pretty badly broken up.’
Police said the broken drain had been leaking rainwater into the soil underneath the road, washing away the foundations and causing it to collapse when the car stopped.
Police spokesman Leonid Pokrovski said: ‘It was an accident waiting to happen.
‘As long as the cars were moving fast over the top it bore the weight, but once a motorist stopped it was too much and it gave way.’

Four adults and two children killed when their car falls into 26ft-wide sinkhole that appeared in Crimean road
Six people - including three-year-old twins - died after their car fell into a 26ft-wide sinkhole in the middle of a main road in Crimea.
Driver Ibrail Eskandarov, 34, was killed instantly along with his wife Eskandarova, 33, their twins, Asan and Muslim, and daughter, Aliye, 16, when their car suddenly plunged down six metres.
The car carrying eight passengers fell into the massive pit after the vehicle entered the unlit part of the road near the Crimean capital of Simferopol.
According to rescue workers the massive circular hole, which was at least six metres deep and eight metres wide, suddenly appeared in the middle-of-the-road in front of the car.When the earth caved in below the road, electricity cables were ripped out cutting off power supplies and making it impossible to see.
At least 43 rescue personnel and 16 vehicles were involved in the rescue effort.
The accident happened on the highway between the city of Simferopol in the disputed Southern Crimean Peninsula and the village of Nikolaevka.

Car falls into monster 8-meter-wide sinkhole in Crimean road, 6 dead (PHOTOS, VIDEO)
Six people, including two children died after their car fell into a monster sinkhole in the middle of the highway near the Crimean capital of Simferopol. The hole appeared to be 6 meters deep and 8 meters wide.
The accident happened on the highway between Simferopol and the village of Nikolaevka on Saturday night, said the Emergencies Ministry’s press service in Crimea. The car with eight passengers fell into the pit after the vehicle entered the unlit part of the road.
“A huge sinkhole six meters deep and eight meters wide was formed after the collapse,” said the statement.
According to the medics, six passengers “received injuries incompatible with life.” Among them were 3-year-old twins and a 16-year-old girl.
The rescue workers managed to save a one-year old boy and a 12-year old girl. The preliminary medics’ reports say that a boy has a traumatic brain injury and he is in coma, while the girl has multiple fractures. Both kids are currently receiving emergency treatment.
At least 43 rescue personnel and 16 vehicles were involved in the rescue effort.
The experts are investigating the reasons of the accident.

A major highway that opened in Henan province in April has caved in 14 times, causing a headache for drivers who have been warned to be on the alert for sudden collapses.
The latest hole appeared Friday, ironically opening up beneath a truck cleaning up debris following a previous collapse, mainland media reported.
The incidents have become so frequent that locals have taken to mocking the state of the highway in Zhengzhou city.
The city's construction committee on Friday warned the public about the the sinkholes, but failed to explain the reason for their appearance, the Beijing News reported.
