NEW DELHI — An eight-story building in Bangladesh that housed several garment factories collapsed on Wednesday morning, killing at least 70 people, injuring hundreds of others, and leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble, according to Bangladeshi officials and media outlets.... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/world/asia/bangladesh-building-co...

So much happening under our feet.  Daily collapses of roadways due to the severe bow stretch, severe rains, crunching and land subduction all predicted in Zetatalk and all happening now.  Last week in Utah a fatal road collapse killed a 14 year old girl and injured 2.  It's painful to watch the planet crumble but we all knew it was coming.

Buildings collapsing.........a daily happening too.  With responses about what's causing all these happenings ranging from, rain, human error, poorly constructed, yada yada.....BUT, that's not going to fly with people much longer.  As soon as Planet X peers out at us from the sky, people will remember all the things that have happened up to this point and finally somehow, they will connect the dots.  Some will be in extreme denial, others will be so afraid and look for someone to take care of them, and still others will stand up and be counted and prepare as best we could.  There's no wishing this away, there's only pushing forward to a better tomorrow.  While our infrastructure crumbles around us we need to learn to be more careful, tread softly, kiss your kids, love with all your heart.  We are IN IT NOW.

I live in a house built in 1850 and it isn't falling down.  Age does not mean collapse.

100-year-old building partially collapses in Malone

By: Rachael Paradis

A building in Malone that has been standing for more than a century will no longer be a sight in the town. The building on Route 11, well known to many in the community, collapsed overnight. While no one was injured, our Rachael Paradis tells us why the town is in a rush to tear it down.

MALONE, N.Y. -- Neighbors in Malone stood in surprise, took pictures and even shared stories of a once popular tavern that started to crumble early Monday morning.

County Legislator Billy Jones said, "It's an old structure, it was a structure that was obviously unsafe."

The tavern/hotel was built in the early 1900'. It has been closed to the public for about 15 years and was condemned six months ago.

Franklin County Emergency Services Director Rick Provost, "We're unsure what occurred last night at 3 a.m. What we do know is this building has been on our list of buildings with issues."

Jones said, "Old things fall down."

Police closed off part off Route 11 to traffic and to people, out of concern the rest of the building could fall down. Some in the community voiced concern over why this building, along with others like it in the area that haven't already been demolished. Officials say it comes down to money.

Provost said, "The high cost of abatement for these buildings really makes it tough for the county or the village to take those burdens on."

Jones, "We just have to come up with a plan to start taking some of these building down so we don't run into this problem going forward."

The demolition is only expected to take hours, but cleaning up the area is a different issue. Officials say it could be weeks before the site is completely cleared.

LAKE ELSINORE: Water leak causes street collapse

10:00 PM PDT on Friday, July 22, 2011

By GENE GHIOTTO
The Press-Enterprise

Temporary repairs to a section of Joy Street in Lake Elsinore are in place today after a 1-inch water line gave way, causing 80 feet of the roadway to collapse and the asphalt to buckle.

The leak, caused by a 6 to 8-inch diameter tree root, was reported late Thursday in a line that leads to several duplexes on Joy between Machado Street and Riverside Drive, and behind Machado Elementary School.

Water service was restored to the 34 customers early Friday morning, said Greg Morrison, spokesman for the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District.

Water district and contractor crews spent much of Friday removing the damaged asphalt on the southbound side of Joy and laying down a temporary patch. The road was opened in both directions by late afternoon.

"That way the road will be open completely for the entire weekend," Morrison said.

Crews will return Monday and trench from curb to curb to permanently repair the 1-inch line.

On Tuesday, a paving company will remove the patch, put down new base and repave one side of Joy, Morrison said. Work on the other side will take place on Wednesday.

"That way on Tuesday and Wednesday we'll be able to keep on

Windhorst, Parsons Roadway Collapse: Cautious Testing Continues

County workers are testing for sinkholes but the work is proceeding methodically because of utility lines at the intersection, according to a Hillsborough County spokesman.

Several lanes at the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon remained closed for the indefinite future as county workers tread carefully in determining what caused a section of the roadway to collapse July 19.

“We have to be really careful at that intersection because there are lots of utility lines in the area,” said Hillsborough County spokesman Patrick Murray. "We have a sewer line and a water line there and we have to make sure there are no other utilities, so we have to be careful drilling.”

At the scene, late afternoon July 22, barricades were seen at the intersection, with drilling under way.

Crew workers first believed a 16-inch sewage pipeline beneath the intersection might have caused the collapse of the 6-foot-square section of roadway on July 19, according to a county report.

But the sewer line was dug up and found to be intact.  Now the county is testing the intersection for sinkholes — but carefully, as Murray noted.

Additional detours and lane closures are possible as crews dig up the line for inspection and any necessary repairs.

Motorists who must travel through the intersection are warned to expect delays.

Sewer collapse closes part of Lexington Road

At least one eastbound lane of Road near Etley Avenue and Cave Hill Cemetery will be closed during Thursday morning’s rush hour after a 48-inch brick sewer collapsed Wednesday evening.

Crews noticed a depression in the road before discovering the sewer had collapsed, and the area will be excavated Thursday morning, said Metropolitan Sewer District Executive   Bud Schardein.

He said it was too early to tell what caused the collapse, but age was a likely factor. That part of the sewer was built in the 1880s and could have been weakened from an unusually wet spring.

“With all the wet weather we’ve had this past spring, that has a tendency to undermine the mortar,” Schardein said.

Road collapse might have killed Colorado family

(2011-07-20)

(wpr) - Engineers say a large section of Wyoming highway where four Colorado family members plunged to their deaths might have totally collapsed in a matter of minutes.

It had been raining for hours Monday night when local authorities warned the Constantinides family, among others, about potential flood conditions near North Brush Creek Campground around midnight.

Not long afterward, the family's van drove into a washed-out portion of Wyoming highway 130 and was swept about 75 yards down Brush Creek. Laurel Constantindies and her three daughters died.

The husband and father, Alex Constantindies, who had grown up in Laramie, survived and escape the vehicle. He and a passerby later rescued Carbon County Emergency management Coordinator John Ziegler, whose car washed out while he was trying to assist in flood protection efforts.

Ziegler said he was "very fortunate" to have survived.

Bruce Burrows of the Wyoming Transportation Department says engineers are studying what happened to the roadway early Tuesday morning. He says preliminary assessments indicate the creek swollen with rain and snowmelt may have undermined the roadway over some hours and then gouged a 25-foot-wide, 9-foot-deep hole in a matter of minutes.

Road Collapse Sends Several Cars Onto Rail Tracks In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WNEW/AP) — Officials say a block-long sinkhole opened up in a residential neighborhood in northeast Baltimore, sucking in several cars and forcing the evacuation of several houses.

The fire department tweeted on its official Twitter account that a sinkhole opened up Wednesday afternoon in the first block of 26th Street between Charles and St. Paul streets. The sinkhole opened next to railroad tracks used by CSX.

The block of rowhouses was being evacuated and a building inspector has been called. The fire department said no injuries had been reported.

CSX has suspended rail traffic, according to a fire department tweet. Transportation officials were said to be conducting an analysis of the street.

According to one witness, the site looks like a landslide had occurred.

Rain has drenched central Maryland for more than 24 hours.

St. Paul Street is closed between 28th and 25th streets, and Charles Street is closed between 25th and 26th streets.

Road Problems in Mobile County

BLB FLOODED STREET

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. -  The overnight rains created headaches for folks throughout Mobile County.
Many were left dodging sinkholes and flooded roads Wednesday morning.

Fox Ten News found a deceptively dangerous situation on Hamilton Blvd near San Marino Drive.

Hamilton was closed after someone reported a crack across the road, and water flowing under the highway.

A county worker who came out to inspect the situation fell waist deep into the ground when a sinkhole opened beneath him.

The worker was standing on the dirt just off the road when it happened.
Another worker helped the man out. Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt.

Just about every yard on San Marino was flooded but residents were more worried about the heavy traffic that was being detoured onto to their street from Hamilton.

“They’re diverting all the 18-wheelers with all the heavy stuff on them down our road. This is swamp land to start with. We’re worried about it cracking, then we’re going to be stranded,” Sandy Artry said.

The folks on San Marino won’t have to worry about one 18 wheeler. The driver, Kenneth Weaver couldn’t make the sharp turn. Weaver said he would have to come up with a different strategy.

“It’s too sharp of a turn to make with this long trailer here,” Weaver said.

Our crew couldn’t get to Jessica Breland’s house on Davenport in Bayou LaBatre because her road was flooded. She may have been stranded, but we did spot several people who were willing to drive through the water.

Jyssica Stagner was one of them. Just moments after telling Fox Ten News she felt safe driving through the water covered street she ended up stuck in the middle of the road.

She had to call a friend to get her car out. She said she learned a tough lesson.

“I’m going to say right now, if you don’t got a truck, don’t come through here. It ain’t worth it. It’s not worth losing your vehicle over,” Stagner said.

The rain is gone, but it may take awhile to repair all the road damage.

Fortunately, there haven’t been any reports of serious injuries as a result of the road problems in Mobile County.

Eight-storey building collapses in Surat, injures six

 April 29, 2014

Surat (Gujarat), Apr. 29 (ANI): The collapse of an eight-storey building in Gujarat’s Surat has injured six people on Tuesday.

Fire brigade and rescue teams reached the site of the collapse and freed the injured people stuck under the debris as well as the residents stuck on the floors.

“A message was received in the fire emergency control room at 12:55 that the slab of a building in Kanhaiya apartment at Ghod dod road has collapsed. Fire brigade reached the site but the inner compartment of the building from its sixth floor had fallen completely. Six-seven people were stuck in the building. The fire brigade has rescued six people and sent them to the hospital. The work to remove debris is on,” said fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation, Pankaj Patel.

The building crumpled from its inner portion, thus giving a chance to the residents to escape from the balconies.

Reasons for the collapse are as yet unknown and being investigated but according to primary report, the building might have collapsed due to drill work taking place on the sixth floor.

“Renovation work was being carried out at some flat. And they were removing a part with the help of a drill machine which caused vibrations and the building collapsed. This is according to the preliminary information . But the final report of the engineer will reveal the real cause of the collapse,” said city Mayor, Niranjan Zanzmera.

Three people are reported dead but the news has not been confirmed by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) authorities.

Meanwhile, an investigation is underway. (ANI)

Alaskan Ferry Dock Mysteriously Collapses (Apr 24)

The state ferry dock in Skagway, Alaska remains underwater and is closed indefinitely after it sank on early Thursday morning.

"Nobody's really sure what happened... but it was a surprise," says Skagway resident Gary Heger, who was one of the first to see the dock submerged on Thursday morning.

By about 9:30 a.m., the dock was fully submerged and the passenger walkway had collapsed.

The dock, about 40 by 50 metres in size and made up of 24 concrete chambers, is normally used to load passengers and vehicles onto Alaska Marine Highway System ferries.

It's now fully submerged at high tide and partially submerged during low tide.

State transportation engineers and a diver have been on site and are still assessing the damage and what could have caused the dock to give way.

"The word that the engineer used is he's perplexed," says Jeremy Woodrow, a spokesman with the Alaska Department of Transportation, who says the dock is resting on the seafloor.

"We actually have inspected every one of those individual chambers [in the dock] in the last year and there was no indication of any wear."

Yesterday, yellow absorbent boom was laid around the structure.

The Alaska Marine Highway System has cancelled all sailings for the next two weeks.

Woodrow says if the dock can be salvaged, it will take some time before it will be ready to accept ferry traffic.

"We're working with the municipality of Skagway and other marine facilities to see if there's a temporary solution that we can put in place with our ferry system," he says, "or maybe we need to bring in a temporary floating dock so we can restore ferry service."

1 killed, 1 missing in Vienna building collapse

VIENNA (AP) — A residential building in Austria's capital partially collapsed after an apparent explosion Saturday, killing one person and leaving another missing, officials said. Five others were injured.

Witnesses heard a dull thud before the top two floors of the building collapsed, raining debris onto the street in Vienna's 15th district shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday (0800 GMT; 4 a.m. EDT).

"There was a cloud of dust, and lots of people screaming and running," Ted Knops, a 32-year-old resident, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It was like a science-fiction movie when something comes bursting through the wall."

Police spokeswoman Adina Mircioane said a 19-year-old man who was rescued from the rubble died on his way to a hospital.

"We are looking for a woman in her 50s who is still missing," Mircioane said, adding that the five other people had been treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the explosion was still being investigated, she said.

A video taken by Knops showed a vast plume of dust enveloping the street moments after the incident. The video was reviewed by the AP and along with Knops' description appeared consistent with the police.
