Bad condition of Hospital Elio Fiallo Pedernales, endangers patients, staff and visitors work
By: Baez Odalis

Pedernales, (Rep. Dom) .- The indifference of the authorities has to do with solving problems that concern the Dominican State is not concerned that the physical structure of the hospital Dr. Elio Fiallo here is falling apart, which full of fear to anyone who is inside.

Look up when patients go to hospital has become a concern, fearing that at any moment another  piece of concrete fall on you, and cause more damage than the disease ..

The consulting rooms, as roofs that are in the hospital corridors put fear among patients, nurses, doctors and paramedics, who sometimes have pieces of concrete falling from the roofs, building that has been repaired several times, but not to their age for nothing.

The medical center was built over 50 years and its interior has been cracking, which are visible on the rods are oxidized, making it impossible to support safety of their roofs.

In days past, Dr. Leslie Perez, an internist in cardiology, was falling into the consulting room a piece of concrete, which hurts a little bit patient who was treated at that moment, thank God nothing happened.

Hospital only thing that works in this province with capacity to serve patients, but he needs a change of its infrastructure, and logistics specialists necessary to prevent referrals to other central provinces.

Patients and community have appealed to President Leonel Fernandez, to order the demolition of the hospital and proceed to build a more secure.

Dominican Republic. El Peñon flooding

The ordeal of rainwater for El Peñon
By: Dr. Thomas Vinicio Lopez Feliz

Nobody in their right mind can dispute the undoubted benefits that produce rain, but in the municipality of El Peñon these effects are accompanied by undesirable accumulation of water end in most of the courtyards and inside the residences The big problem is the result of several years ago when the streets were paved raised the level of the same substantially, without taking into account that the interior of the residences and their peripheral areas were lower than what was previously normal Worse was no drainage system installed that allows the normal flow of water.

Because of this harsh reality every time it rains there are small gaps, and there is despair in the helpless people have to live under those conditions. The lucky ones use small pumps to vent the streets of standing water. In addition to the flooding of the Yaque del Sur River rises the water level in the subsoil, causing among other things the overflow of toilets and latrines.

As it is easy to understand, these conditions favor the development of mosquitoes that could cause outbreaks of malaria and skin diseases as a result of their annoying bites. Just as cholera outbreaks could be developed and any other type of diarrhea caused by contamination of water with feces. The worst thing about this is that in my humble opinion I see no possible solution, perhaps other people, especially engineers, can make effective contributions. Meanwhile we do not consider individual viable solutions because they are out of the investment capabilities of almost all people. These individual solutions include raising the level of the houses and courtyards, which deserves great investments that could include the rebuilding of homes to retrofit their spaces to the development of normal household activities.

The community of El Peñon infinitely grateful to any person or institution concerned to review and / or contribute to resolving this desperate situation of discomfort and unsanitary currently living in most of its inhabitants in consequence of heavy rains in recent days, and in the future are to be produced
