WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.
Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.
Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.
He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.
Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.
Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.
The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."
"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."
She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.
"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.
With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.
The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.
It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.
What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

CHIKKAMAGALURU: A biker had a narrow escape after the Malinganadu bridge, Mudigere taluk, collapsed following heavy rains, at 10 am on Monday. The area has been experiencing heavy rains since Sunday evening.
The biker, Tamminakudige Pradeep, sustained serious injuries owing to the fall.Pradeep was given first aid at Kalasa Hospital and then shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment.
The bridge is situated on the Koove-Hirebail connect road linking Aramane Talaguru, Bilagali Malinganadu, Taminakodige, Hemmakki, Idakani, Neranki and other villages. Following the collapse of the bridge, the villages have lost connectivity to the outside world.
Revenue officer Mahesh, Village Accountant Girish , PWD EE Manjunath visited the spot on Monday and studied the situation.
Manjunath later said that the process of constructing a temporary bridge in the adjoining coffee estate after convincing the owner has commenced. For the construction of a permanent bridge, a proposal will be submitted to the government, he said.

A towering arch bridge over a bay in eastern Taiwan has collapsed, sending a burning oil tanker truck falling on to boats in the water below.
An air force helicopter, fishing vessels and more than 60 military personnel including divers are searching for possible victims.
Six people, all foreigners, are missing and believed trapped on one of the fishing boats, the National Fire Agency said.
Interior minister Hsu Kuo-yung told reporters that five people were feared to have been on the bridge when it collapsed. Ten people were taken to hospital, six of them with serious injuries.
The 460ft-long bridge collapsed in Nanfangao, a tiny but often-crowded Pacific coast fishing village.
The weather at the time was sunny, but the collapse occurred hours after a typhoon swept by the island.
Disaster relief officials would not say if the storm had weakened the bridge or give other details on the cause. The government-run Central News Agency said a bridge pier may have collapsed.

When that happened, it also damaged one of the water mains and Irish Water say that there are now interruptions to the supply around Ardattin, Ballynoe, Knocknatubrid and the surrounds.
Local councillor, John Murphy has been down to see the damage this afternoon:
“The workers are there at the moment and hopefully the water [supply] will be back to houses that are cut off in the next couple of hours.
“There’s not a massive amount of damage. If it was on the bridge it would be a much bigger problem but it’s not.
“It’s between the bridge and the entrance into a private house. It’ll take a bit of work but it’s not something that can’t be repaired.”
Meanwhile, in Kilkenny the Bleach Road is once again flooded.
Local Gardaí say it’s impassable at the moment.

Authorities are now seeking to create an alternative route to facilitate motor-vehicle traffic after the bridge at Hampstead collapsed on Tuesday.
According to information reaching Dominica News Online (DNO), structural damage to the bridge has made it impassable to vehicular traffic. DNO understands that a temporary by-pass has been created for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, motorists are being urged to proceed with caution in the area.
DNO contacted the Public Works Ministry but we we were unable to obtain any official information about the incident.

DURHAMVILLE N.Y. — State and county officials in Oneida County have closed off a bridge over the Erie Canal due to “an imminent bridge collapse.”
The bridge in Durhamville, a hamlet in Oneida County east of Sylvan Beach, is on Higginsville Rd. It's also called County Road 50A. The NYS DOT says the bridge had been under construction since June, but something shifted Thursday and they believe the bridge could collapse at any time.
According to a post on Facebook from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the NYS Department of Transportation and Canal Corp asked them for help making sure boats do not go under the bridge.
Oneida County Marine Patrol and the Sylvan Beach Fire Department shut down canal traffic. They say all boaters should stay away from this area until it is deemed safe.

QUINCY, Fla. (WTXL) — A collapsed road on the Florida-Georgia line has people in one Quincy neighborhood feeling trapped.
Neighbors say that now that this road here on Hutchinson Ferry Road is closed and another road nearby closed, they're wondering what the county will do to make sure that they are able to leave their houses quickly.
Concern began for those in the area after a raised, bridge-like structure collapsed Wednesday morning on Hutchinson Ferry Road. The Gadsden County Administrator says the collapse came from excessive rain and more traffic due to utility trucks responding to Hurricane Michael recovery.
People who live nearby say the road always seemed unstable to them. One neighbor tells us that the county patched up parts of the road a couple of times this year. But the real cause for concern is that an intersecting road less than a mile away is also shut down. With two streets blocked off, people say it's becoming a hassle.
"Can't get out there and walk like I'm supposed to. And as long as I sit there and I try to do what I'm supposed to do, what the doctor told me to do, and then you've got people that lives on this road that works in Bainbridge or goes into Quincy, they can't even get through the bridges," said one person.
The Gadsden County Administrator tells us that the road is kept up by the county, but F-DOT is assisting with these repairs. The Gadsden County Administrator tells me he has no idea when the road will be repaired.
Authorities say the bridge on Hutchinson Ferry Road in Quincy collapsed, sending two drivers to the hospital Wednesday morning.
The Decatur County Sheriff's office and Decatur County Fire Rescue says that the bridge on Hutchinson Ferry Road at the Florida-Georgia Line in Quincy has collapsed, prompting a road closure.
They say all local traffic has been detoured and rerouted due to the collapse.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two different cars went airborne over the collapse around 5:10 a.m. Wednesday morning.
FHP says the two vehicles were traveling south on Hutchinson Ferry Road just south of Lewis Lane.
The first vehicle, a Chevy Silverado, became airborne over a gap in the road caused by a collapsed bridge on Hutchinson Ferry Road. When the truck hit the road, troopers say it overturned onto it's roof before coming to a final stop.
Approximately 30 minutes later, FHP says a Ford Taurus also flew over the gap in the road. As a result, the front of the Ford Taurus was damaged, along with the undercarriage.
The family of the first driver says he was hospitalized with serious injuries and is awaiting surgery. FHP says the person who was driving the second car was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare with minor injuries.
As of 12 p.m., crews were on scene evaluating the damage and lowering boats into the water below the collapse.
Deputies are asking everyone traveling in that area keep your eyes open and watch for road hazards.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Sunday, confirmed that no casualty was recorded when a section of a pedestrian bridge was damaged at Yaba on Saturday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Director-General of the Agency, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said that no life was lost during the incident, adding that the agency carried out prompt recovery operations to ensure free flow of traffic in the area.
“An empty truck with registration number AAA 364 XS crashed onto the pedestrian bridge at the bus stop as a result of brake failure, thereby damaging the bridge railings.
“However, no loss of life nor injury was sustained at the scene,” the LASEMA boss said.
He said that one of the affected bridge railings was successfully recovered off the road with the aid of the agency’s truck and placed at a lay-by to ensure free vehicular movement.
The entrance to the pedestrian bridge is however closed for public use.
