WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.
Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.
Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.
He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.
Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.
Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.
The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."
"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."
She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.
"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.
With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING
http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm
We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.
What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

MOSCOW (AP) — A motorway bridge over the Trans-Siberian Railway has collapsed, injuring a truck driver and nearly missing a train that was passing underneath.
Russian officials said the driver of a truck who was crossing the bridge as it collapsed on Tuesday was hospitalized with injuries. They said the accident happened in the city of Svobodny in Russia's far-eastern Amur region, near the border with China.
The collapse halted traffic on a segment of the 7,000-kilometer-long (4,350-mile) Trans-Siberian Railway, the world's longest railroad line. The railway links Moscow with Vladivostok

The people of Amamba, Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State have cried out to the Federal and state governments to come to save them from suffering which results from the sorry state of the 34-year-old Usumani Bridge. They are unhappy that they could not have access to their farms as a result of the circumstances.
It was gathered that the bridge which was built in 1984, brought relief to the community when one of their benevolent sons, Chief Kalu M. Okoronkwo, singlehandedly constructed the bridge.
Members of the community reminded President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration of an attempt by the last administration of Ex-president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to acquire 500 hectares of land in the Southeast for cassava production project; even as they said the project was abandoned.
According to a member of the community, Mr. Orji, part of the bridge collapsed after a torrential rain on August 18.
According to Orji, the community, through self-help efforts have been carrying out remedial work on the bridge in order to ensure that farmers have access to their farmlands, but they expressed the fear that the bridge would collapse totally if nothing concrete was done before another torrential rain falls.
Orji, who said the lives of members of the community, would be at risk if they continue to use the bridge at its present condition.
He, however, called on the local, state and Federal Government to come to the aid of the community.
“In the yesteryear, the fast-flowing Usumani River was a great obstacle to Amanna farmers until 1984 when a son of the community, Chief Okoronkwo Maurine built the bridge to the great relief of the people.
“The Amamba Farm Road is the site of the vast Akpaka farmland which the Federal Government acquired and cleared 500 hectares for Southeast zonal cassava production project which was abandoned.
“The same road has historically been the starting point of business in Abiriba as it was the road through which our pioneer entrepreneurs launched out on foot to Uzuakoli thence to Umuahia, Aba and Port Harcourt on business concerns. It is still very likely to be the site of an alternative Abiriba regional market and industrial cluster.
“Kamalu Ozuaelu (the god of thunder deity), the Isimokoto static green lake and our own uncompleted version of the Parisian Arch of Triumph, three monuments that have potential value for tourism are all located on this farm road.
“These days when cattle have invaded almost all farm lands in Abiriba, the entire Abiriba people have shifted their farming activities to the Amamba Farm Road because it is fertile and a bit hidden from the highways. So, the collapsed bridge does not affect only Amamba indigenes, but also the entire Abiriba community.
“We, therefore, call on government at all levels and public-spirited individuals to join hands in ensuring that a standard bridge is built over the river to enable our people to evacuate their farm produce to other parts of the state and beyond.
“The third tier of government where our natural resources are derived from is deliberately incapacitated as if rural dwellers are not Nigerians.
“As both the Federal and state governments can ill-afford to neglect a road of economic importance as that of Amamba Farm Road, we call on the relevant authorities to come to our aid by constructing the 25-kilometer Amamba community Road.
“Amamba people are presently in great distress as they have lost their Usumani Bridge to torrential rainfall of August 18. This bridge is the only link between the community and their farmlands,” Orji said.

A rural politician in eastern Saskatchewan is at a loss to explain why a newly built bridge collapsed just hours after opening.
Reeve Duane Hicks said the Dyck Memorial Bridge in the Rural Municipality of Clayton looked good on Friday morning when it opened to traffic.
But by 4:30 p.m. the same day, part of bridge deck had collapsed into the Swan River below.
“The company did not build a bridge to fall over. We sure didn’t buy a bridge to fall over,” Hicks said.
“Nobody expected this.”
No one was injured and the builder, Can-Struct Systems Inc., has hired an independent firm to perform tests. Both the company and municipality met on Saturday night to discuss the issue.
Greg Anderson, a bridge inspector with Can-Struct, did not respond to requests for comment.
Hicks was in Yorkton, Sask., when he received a call around 2 p.m. Friday from the town’s foreman who said the bridge wasn’t looking right. So Hicks picked up a local counsellor and went to inspect the bridge himself and noticed that it had a compression in it.
He received a call from the fire department soon after saying that the bridge went down.

Hicks suspects there may have been something under the bridge that let go which caused the collapse. He said he’s not blaming anyone, because he doesn’t know what happened.
“It’s an unknown fact at this time so we cannot point fingers at anybody,” he said.
The previous bridge had been in place for more than 50 years and Hicks estimates that 50 to 60 cars pass over it each day.
The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities inspected the bridge earlier this year and told the RM that it would need to be replaced as it was rotting and dangerous.
The bridge is mostly used by farmers, so Hicks said the municipality wanted the bridge completed in time for harvest.
The municipality put out a tender and selected Can-Struct, who had been working on the project for the last four or five weeks.

Hicks, who has been the reeve for two years, said the bridge was built to Canadian standards and the municipality has been told it won’t be on the hook for the cost of repairs.
“Obviously they have to find out what happened,” Hicks said.
“We want a bridge, they want to find out what happened to the bridge.”
Counsellors met for several hours on Monday to discuss their options. Hicks said the job will get done.
“That’s the bottom line. It’s going to get fixed.”

An eleven year old boy was confirmed dead and fifteen others in critical condition after a church building collapsed in Adagbrasa community, Okpe council area of Delta on Sunday.
The only deceased in the accident; the 11-year old Jeffrey Jackson, was said to have been trapped down while trying to escape from the collapsing walls.
NE gathered that the Sunday morning Mass of the St. Paul Catholic Church, Adagbrasa Ugolo, was on when the walls of the church building came crashing on parishioners.
According to eyewitnesses, the service was just picking off, although the officiating priest, who was to come from the headquarters of the council area, Orerokpe, was yet to arrive, worshippers had already assembled and were conducting initial service rituals when the building collapsed.
It was also gathered that no church member was still left trapped under the rubble of the collapsed walls as all those inside escaped unhurt, except for the deceased and the five injured persons.
Describing the horrifying moment to our source on the site of the incident, a parishioner, Miss Elohor Amerotoraine, said members were holding initial service rituals, awaiting the arrival of the officiating priest, when they started observing cracks and collapse of walls around them.
“I was inside the church when it happened, it was around 7:30 to 8:00am. We were having service when it happened. We are under Orerokpe so they posted a seminarian to us, but the seminarian was yet to come when it happened so we just finished sharing the rosary and were singing some hymns when we suddenly started hearing the wall cracking and falling.
“At that point everybody started running out to escape the falling walls. Before long the entire church had collapsed, it even killed someone; a boy of about 11 years of age. The five persons who got injured have been taken to the hospital. I don’t think anybody was trapped inside because we have all come out” Amerotoraine said.
Confirming the incident, the Delta state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, said the dead and the wounded had been evacuated from the scene.
“Yes, a Catholic church. There’s only one death; an 11-year old boy, the other victims are in different hospitals now receiving treatment. I can’t confirm how many of them are injured now, they are scattered in different hospitals. There’s nobody still trapped under the rubbles”, the police chief confirmed.
The Delta state Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, who visited the scene of the collapse said the state government would investigate the cause, adding that the state would pick up the cost of treating the wounded persons.

Many were left with broken arms and legs during the freak accident during the 'O Marisquiño' festival in the city of Vigo. Were you there?
HUNDREDS of concertgoers have been left injured after a pier collapsed into the sea during a Spanish pop festival.
Two children were among the 313 people left with broken arms, legs and other injuries in the freak accident during the "O Marisquiño" festival in the city of Vigo.
Five people are believed to be in a serious condition, but there were no fatalities as a result of the incident.
Spanish newspaper Faro de Vigo said the wooden pier collapsed during the first song of the concert, just after the singer Rels B told the crowd to jump.
There were scenes of panic as revellers plummeted into the sea and were unable to get out just after midnight.
More than 300 people were injured when it collapsed after a rapper told the crowd to jump, it was reported
Festival-goer Aitana Alonso told local paper Diario de Vigo: "The floor gave way beneath us as if we were in a lift. It was a question of five seconds.
"The platform broke and we all fell. People landed on top of me. I tried to get out and couldn’t. My foot ended up stuck in the water but I managed to free it before a boy gave me his hand and pulled me out.
“There were people underneath me, shouting they couldn’t get out. I didn’t think I would.”
A friend described the scene as “horrible, chaos, panic”, adding: “I saw a family and the little girl was saying to her dad, ‘If we die here, I love you.
"It was the worst moment of my life," said one of the concert goers who reported seeing people screaming and running around.
Another 16-year-old said: "We were on the walkway when it opened up. I fell on people and people fell on me. I was hit on the head and then some sort of container fell as well. I tried to get out and someone helped me."
Cops and paramedics rushed to help those injured with ambulances whisking revellers to nearby hospitals.
The head of the Galician region's health authority, Jesus Vazquez Almuina, told Antena 3 television that 313 people required treatment.
Organisers set up an information point for worried relatives who couldn't initially find their loved ones.
In a tweet, rap artist Rels B wished "strength" to the injured and advised anyone worried about friends or relatives to contact an emergency information point set up by festival organisers.
City mayor Abel Caballero has announced an investigation will now be launched to determine why the wooden platform collapsed.
Vigo’s Port Authority president Enrique Lopez Veiga said he thought it was due to “excess weight.”
There were no immediate report of any Brits or Irish among the casualties, although the nationalities of those hurt has not yet been revealed.
O Marisquino bills itself as an urban, culture and action sports festival. The drama happened at the start of the last day of the three-day festival, which is in its 18th year.
Visitors number around 160,000 and come to see events including BMX, skateboarding and break dancing.
An article published in the local press before the start of this year’s festival featured interviews with visitors from all over the world, including Portugal, Venezuela, the States and Germany.
