In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

At least three killed as Argentine fishing boat sinks off Chubut

The Mar del Plata-based “Repunte” had taken to sea from Puerto Madryn on June 13.

Argentine Coast Guard found Sunday the dead body of two of the nine crew members missing after Saturday's sinking of a fishing vessel off the coast of Argentina's southern province of Chubut, it was reported, while one more sailor whose body is yet to be retrieved is also feared dead and seven more are still missing.

The fishing vessel Repunte sank about 80 kilometers north of the coast of Rawson, in the Patagonian province of Chubut, it was reported. On Saturday, the Coast Guard managed to

rescue two survivors and detected the lifeless body of another sailor, shortly before stopping the search due to the weather that hit the area since the beginning of the weekend and for which the provincial government declared a state of emergency.

An airplane, a helicopter and the Coast Guard ship Prefecto Derbes are taking part in the search amidst waves of up to ten metres.

It all began Saturday morning, when the captain of the Argentine-flagged Repunte signaled the Maria Liliana, which sailed 16 nautical miles (about 32 kilometers) apart, that they were abandoning the ship in the middle of a strong storm.

The latter contacted the coastal station in Comodoro Rivadavia to request assistance, after which the search and rescue operation was launched. Once at the scene, the Coast Guard found an empty liferaft and was able to rescue one person alive. Another survivor was rescued by the helicopter's crew as well as one dead body.

The Mar del Plata-based Repunte had taken to sea from Puerto Madryn on June 13.

Federal authorites from Chubut's capital, Rawson, are in charge of investigating the incident.

IT might look like fiction from a script of a boxoffice movie, but for two Comorians it was a matter of life and death.

The two fishermen in a bizarre incident survived for 17 days on the sea, without food and clean water, after their boat capsized while on a fishing mission.

The fishermen, who were trawling in the Indian Ocean, held onto dear life when their boat capsized at an unknown area in the sea and ended up being washed onto the shores of Malindi Beach in Zanzibar, on June 13, this year.

The two lucky men also have well-wishers to thank after they quickly informed the police when they were discovered unconscious along the beach.

The Urban West Regional Police Commander (RPC), Hassan Nassir, confirmed the incident and elaborated that the police rushed the survivors to Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar where they underwent special treatment for four days.

He went on to name the two Comorian fishermen as Mohamed Ali Rashid (35) and Mohamed Said Swalim (37) and revealed that they were discharged from hospital on Friday.

He said that the fishermen were thankful to hard work and brilliant services from the Mnazi Mmoja Hospital doctors and nurses, who spent sleepless nights to save their lives. According to the fishermen’s account from the hospital bed, they met the near death experience when they were fishing in the deep seas.

Their boat was hit by strong waves and despite drawing all their experience and expertise to try and save the situation; their efforts were futile as the boat succumbed to waves and capsized. The fishermen then began a long journey to uncertainty when they started to swim hoping to reach the shores.

The fishermen swam for 13 days while eating raw fish and drinking sea water. They went on to explain that when tired, they just floated on water and resume their journey when after resting. But, in a sudden turn of events that almost claimed their lives, the fishermen ran out of food something that made the last four days of the journey difficult.

They started starving and were powerless to continue swimming and it is when they decided to float on water, until the waves washed them along the shores at Malindi Beach.

Speaking with the ‘Sunday News’ a doctor at the hospital who preferred anonymity because he was not the spokesperson, said that the ‘miracle’ fishermen survivors were in critical condition when they arrived, suffering from Hypernatremia, a situation whereby one has excess sodium in the body. According to the doctor, the problem was caused by eating fresh fish and sea water in large amounts.

“They had no food and water so the only way they could survive was by eating fresh fish and drinking ‘salty’ sea water and that is why they had Hypernatremia. We managed to help them gain consciousness first and then continued with other treatments.

Hypernatremia patients feel dizziness or even lose consciousness after blood sodium levels are significantly elevated,” said the anonymous doctor.

He added; “We came to understand what really happened to them after one of our team members who speaks their language translated to us that their boat capsized and they survived on sea water all the days.”

Expounding further, he said the victims had less chances of being found alive if they had spent two to three more days without being discovered, commending doctors on duty that day saying they offered a ‘heroic’ service.

The Fitzgerald was struck at 2:30 am on June 16, off the East Coast of Japan, when the Sun is rising over the Pacific and Nibiru’s magnetic N Pole is shoving the Earth’s magnetic N Pole as it looms up over the horizon. Japan is shoved violently northward during this Polar Push, creating a void in the bay area so  sloshing and wave action offshore along the Pacific occurred. Water seeks its level, and seeks to fill the void. Boats find themselves suddenly displaced, and thrown together.  

The Lake Champlain Ticonderoga collision occurred 12 hours later on May 9, in the afternoon when the Earth is doing a bounce back from the daily Polar Push against the Earth’s magnetic N Pole. Here S Korea was suddenly moved southward, again creating a void along its northern coastline, which results in the sloshing and wave action that can suddenly displace boats. Small boats in particular are unable to resist being carried by such wave action, which moves a LARGE amount of water en mass.

7 U.S. Navy sailors missing off Japan’s coast after destroyer collides with container ship

TOKYO — Seven U.S. Navy sailors are missing off the coast of Japan after an Aegis guided-missile destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald, collided with a container ship early Saturday, causing significant damage and flooding.

Three of the Fitzgerald’s crew members, including its commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, were evacuated from the damaged vessel and are being treated at the U.S. naval hospital at Yokosuka, the home of the Navy’s Seventh Fleet.

Benson was reported to be in stable condition in the hospital, while the other two were still having their injuries assessed. The Seventh Fleet had set up an information center for families of sailors serving on the ship.

The cause of the collision was not yet clear.

“Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the sailors,” said Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The USS Dewey, another destroyer, and two naval tugboats were at the scene, about 12 miles from the Izu Peninsula and 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, searching for the missing sailors on Saturday. Two Japanese coast guard cutters with helicopters were helping. The Fitzgerald returned to Yokosuka Naval Base.

The USS Lake Champlain Ticonderoga-class cruiser has collided with a South Korean fishing vessel during drills in the Sea of Japan. The vessels crashed during a training mission in Japanese waters, 70 miles (112km) east of Gyeongbuk Province. No casualties have been reported so far. The cause of the accident remains unclear and is to be investigated. The boat suddenly appeared near the warship, which at the time was involved in drills along with another vessel.

MMEA searches for two sailors after cargo ship sinks off Melaka

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has launched a search and rescue operation for two missing individuals after an Indonesian cargo vessel sank off Tanjung Keling in Melaka, near here.

MMEA director-general Maritime Admiral Datuk Zulkifli Abu Bakar said they received a report from the Marine Department at about 9.25am on Wednesday that the container vessel KM Avatar was partially submerged about 11 nautical miles from Tanjung Keling.

Admiral Zulkifli said the 57m-long KM Avatar, which was registered in Indonesia, was fully submerged at about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

He said that through information that MMEA obtained, 13 sailors were rescued by MV Undine, which was nearby at the time of the incident.

"Based on information from one of the rescued sailors, two individuals are missing. They are the ship's captain and the ship's cook," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added that the MMEA's search and rescue operation began at 10am on Wednesday using Guard Boat 49 from the Maritime District 5 Linggi and an AW139 helicopter from the Maritime Malaysia air station in Subang.

"The search and rescue operation is being carried out currently despite bad weather with winds of up to 40-50kph and waves that are 2.5 to 3.5 metres high," he said.

Admiral Zulkifli added that the 13 sailors who were rescued were brought to the Parameswara Jetty at Bandar Hilir in Melaka by Guard Boat 49 and will be brought to the Maritime District 5 Linggi office for further action.

He said the cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Ferry with 50 passengers sinks off Philippines, 7 die

MANILA: A passenger ferry with more than 50 people on board including its crew capsized and sank when it was battered by big waves and strong winds in Romblon province in the Visayas, killing seven passengers with three others missing, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

Commander Armand Balilio, the PCG spokesman, said the ill-fated vessel Alad Express 2 was bound for the capital city of Romblon in Romblon when the tragedy struck.

Citing initial reports, Balilio said the ferry with more than  50 passengers and crewmen on board left on Friday afternoon from Sibuyan island to the Romblon City port.

“While at sea, we were battered by big waves and strong winds which forced the ferry to crash into the rocks where it capsized and sank,” Balilio quoted one of the survivors as saying.

He added the PCG immediately sent a vessel to the area where it was assisted by fishermen in rescuing 45 passengers and crew as  it continued to search for the three missing people.

Also on Friday, police reported that two fishermen were missing when a cargo ship rammed into their boat off the town of Naujan in Mindoro Oriental province in Southern Luzon.

Police said the ship crewmen apparently were not aware of the ramming as it was seen proceeding towards the north.

Because of its archipelagic character of more than 7,000 islands, passenger ferries and motorbancas have become one of the most popular and cheapest forms of sea transports for people to go from one island to another.

But maritime experts warned that lax enforcement and aging vessels have been responsible for past maritime disasters until the government took the necessary steps by preventing, among others, ferries from leaving ports at the height of typhoons or storms.

Tug Crosby Commander Sinks in Gulf of Mexico; One Missing, Three Rescued

One person is missing and three others have been rescued after a Crosby Tugs tugboat sank in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana on Monday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it was searching along with good Samaritan vessels for a person in the water approximately 30 nautical miles south of Marsh Island.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at approximately 5 a.m. of the tug vessel Crosby Commander taking on water with four people aboard. Three people were able to evacuate to a life raft before the vessel sank.

One crewmember is missing.

The survivors in the life raft were rescued by the good Samaritan motor vessel Andi Nicole.

The survivors were rescued in good condition with no medical concerns.

The 85-foot Crosby Commander was built in 1978 and belongs to Crosby Tugs, LLC headquartered in Galliano, Louisiana.

The cause of the incident is under investigation

PCG comes to rescue capsized boat’s passengers

Five passengers were rescued after the boat they were riding in capsized in the waters off Panabo City Sunday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)said.

The PCG reported Tuesday that the passengers were onboard a fiber glass boat, and were on their way to Carmen, Davao Del Norte when the boat was suddenly hit by big waves, causing it to capsize.

Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Panabo immediately launched a search and rescue operation in the area after receiving the information from Coast Guard Station Davao.

Men from CGSS Panabo, together with personnel of 1103rd Maritime Police Station, conducted the successful operation. No one was reported injured.

The boat was towed to the shoreline of Barangay San Pedro, Panabo City.

Cargo ship sinks off Cebu

A cargo vessel sank early Sunday morning, May 7, about a kilometer from the shoreline of Talisay City, southern Cebu, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.

None of the 22 crewmembers of the MV Fortuner was hurt in the incident, the PCG said.
Sam Shipping Company Inc., based in Cebu City, owns the ship.

Commander Dionlett Ampil of PCG Cebu Station said that the cause of the sinking was still unknown.

“We will call the ship captain and the crew to identify the reasons. We only have initial data as of now,” he said on Monday.

The Fortuner, which had a gross tonnage of 1,474 metric tons, suffered a crack at the middle of its hull about 4:30 a.m., the report said.

All the vessel’s crewmembers were transferred to a sister ship, MTUG 38, at about 6:10 a.m., 20 minutes before the Fortuner finally sank, it added.

The ship owner, Benson Go, informed the PCG about the mishap, Ampil said.

“Immediately, this station deployed personnel and aluminum boat to verify the report. At 7:30 a.m., oil spill boom was prepared for deployment,” the report said.

The report added that the PCG personnel deployed the oil boom to contain a small surface spill of oil or fuel in the area where the vessel sank.

Two Alberta men dead after boat sinks off Vancouver Island near Tofino

The RCMP says two Alberta men died when a sport-fishing vessel overturned and sank off the west coast of Vancouver Island on Sunday.

The Mounties say the men are 32 and 42 years old, but their names and hometowns haven’t yet be released.

Staff Sgt. Annie Linteau says Tofino RCMP is investigating the capsizing of the 8.4-metre sport fishing vessel in waters northwest of Bartlett Island near Tofino.

She says three of the five men who were on board the vessel when it took on water and capsized were treated and released from hospital.

Linteau says other sport fishing vessels in the area helped rescue the men from the water, and Canadian Coast Guard personnel provided lifesaving measures.

Linteau says the RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of accident.

Someone on the boat made a distress call around 1:20 p.m., said Sub-Lt. Melissa Kia with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.

“We were able to talk with the vessel, live, to confirm that the five passengers were abandoning into the water. While the boat was attempting to get in a better position to speak with us via cellphone, it lost communications with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre,” she said.

Coast guard rescue boats, a Royal Canadian Air Forces helicopter and a plane from CFB Comox were all dispatched to look for the passengers, and a broadcast was put out asking marine vessels in the area to search the area.

Two commercial float planes also responded to the call for help, Kia said, and one of them spotted the people in the water and directed rescuers to the location.

“All five people were recovered from the water by two vessels of opportunity (non-coast guard boats) that were very close to the position,” Kia said.

Jason Bertin said a float plane from his Tofino company, Atleo River Air Service, spotted the vessel and was able to pinpoint its location for rescuers.

“We got called by a local who asked us to go look, so we dispatched a float plane and we dispatched a helicopter out of the airport,” he said.

Bertin said he was in the helicopter but turned back after the vessel was spotted by the other aircraft.

All five people were taken to emergency health services in Tofino. A spokeswoman for Island Health said Sunday that the survivors were treated and released.

What caused the vessel to take on water remains unclear.

Kia said the sea was about two to three metres high Sunday afternoon and lighting conditions in the area were good. She said the water temperature off the west coast of Vancouver Island is between about eight and 10 degrees at this time of year.

Bertin said the vessel was located in waters “very close” to where the whale watching vessel Leviathan II capsized in October 2015 with 27 people on board. Six people died in that incident.

The Transportation Safety Board has yet to complete its investigation into the cause of the tragedy. In the days immediately following the sinking, investigators said Leviathan II passengers had been standing on one side of the top deck when a wave hit the opposite side of the vessel.

Three injured when boat overturns in Moreton Bay with 11 onboard

TWO crew and nine passengers aboard a charter fishing boat that overturned on the South Passage Bar have been returned safely to the mainland.

Paramedics met three passengers, one with a badly lacerated head, at Volunteer Rescue Marine headquarters at Cleveland after the men were returned from Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island.

The bedraggled men declined to talk about their early morning experience.

Senior police praised the brave actions of a police officer who dived into the water to help save those on board who could not reach life jackets, saying it was lucky everyone was accounted for.

Water police were called to the bar between North Stradbroke and Moreton islands just after 6am.

Bayside Patrol Group Acting Inspector Steve Hollands said there were potentially dire consequences when those on board were thrown into the water.

"The information that we've received is that a water police vessel was the first on scene and one of the officers entered the water to assist in extracting all of the persons on to the vessel," he said.

"My understanding was the actions of the officer was very brave.

"With any maritime situation, there's obviously a delay in getting resources out to them, which heightens the risk, so we're very grateful that all persons were able to be saved."

One person was flown to hospital and nine others have received medical treatment.

The vessel is being towed back to the mainland and investigations continue.

​A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said one man was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with spinal precautions, while the other 10 were taken to the Dunwich Health Service Centre for further assessment.

Some passengers from 10-metre Moreton Island Fishing Charters vessel Firebird appeared to be suffering hypothermia, according to police.

Boat owner Mat Hubbard declined to comment.

Inspector Hollands said the vessel itself, the Firebird, was resting on the sand bar and would hopefully be retrieved later in the day.

Initial reports to police said nine passengers and two crew were on board when the vessel overturned between Moreton and North Stradbroke islands about 6am on Wednesday.

A police spokeswoman said all passengers and crew had been accounted for but one man had a serious back injury while another had taken in a large amount of water.

The Rescue 500 helicopter had been dispatched to meet water police as they headed to Dunwich, on North Stradbroke Island.

Queensland Ambulance Service acting operations supervisor Logan Smith said the charter fishing vessel capsized on the South Passage Bar.

Water police and emergency services were sent to the scene after an emergency beacon was activated.

Two people were flown to Brisbane by chopper and the other nine taken to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island for medical assessment.

Supt Logan said one patient had a substantial scalp injury that needed treatment.
