In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

13 people rescued after boat capsizes on Kamloops Lake

The Canadian Press Posted: Jul 15, 2016 7:01 AM PT

Thirteen out-of-province vacationers had to be rescued in B.C.'s southern Interior Thursday evening when their pleasure boat was swamped during a thunderstorm.

Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Michel Grondin says the five adults and eight youths, aged 12 to 15, were in a six-metre boat on Kamloops Lake, west of Kamloops, when the sudden storm kicked up strong winds and high waves.

Grondin says several RCMP units, the fire department and the RCMP helicopter rushed to the lake.

He says by the time crews arrived, nine of the 13 had already made it to shore. Rescuers were able to quickly pluck the remaining two adults and two children from the water and reunite the group.

Police could not provide the home towns of the vacationers, but say all 13 are unhurt.

Hopewell mother, daughter die during York River fishing trip

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. -- A mother and daughter from Hopewell died fishing in the York River Tuesday afternoon. State officials identified the mother as 35-year-old Kimberly Marie Privette, of Hopewell.  Her nine-year-old daughter's name was not released due to her age.

The mother and daughter were with other family members on a 20-foot fishing boat in the York River halfway between Croaker Landing and West Point when it began to take on water over the bow, investigators said.

"The boat started to bog down and they plugged in a secondary bilge pump. It was unable pump out the incoming water. They were able to get the motor started and tried to get the boat on plane to push out the water," a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries investigators said. "When they got on plane the water from the bow came rushing back and causing the boat to capsize ejecting three of the occupants. Two of which became trapped under the boat."

The child's father, grandfather, cousin, and a family friend were all in the boat when it capsized.

"It is believed the subjects were in the water from 12:30 until 2:38 p.m. until a passerby boat was able to rescue them and call for help," the investigator said. "The six people were pulled from the water, two of whom were unconscious and required CPR."

All six people were taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Hospital where Privette and her daughter were pronounced dead.

Investigators said both Privette and her daughter were wearing life jackets.

"The initial investigation indicates the two were trapped under the boat when it capsized," the investigator said. "The four other individuals who were also taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Hospital were released and did not accept medical assistance."

New Jersey State Police
State Police say none of the people on the boat were wearing life jackets.

State troopers and a tow boat crew rescued 11 people and a dog from a capsized boat on the Point Pleasant Canal Sunday, authorities say.

The Point Pleasant Marine Station got a call about a sinking 21-foot boat in the canal near the Loveland Bridge shortly after 5:30 p.m. The emergency call indicated the people in the water, along with the animal, were in distress.

18 tourists, locals stranded after boat capsizes off Sabah

Photo: The Star/ Asia News Network

KOTA KINABALU - The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is racing against time to locate 18 people after their catamaran capsized at about 8pm off Pulau Mantanani on Thursday.

Twelve of the 18, who are currently clinging onto the catamaran that capsized, are tourists from China, while four are crew.

Two locals had also hitched a ride on the boat.

Three MMEA vessels are in the area and are communicating with the crew of the catamaran.

All 18 are currently together.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Sabah and Labuan regional director First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som said that their patrol boats were already in the area but were finding it difficult to locate the capsized boat.

"We were in telephone communication with the crew and we advised them to put on their life jackets and tie themselves to each other with ropes so they do not drift apart," he said when contacted at 11pm.

He declined to comment further on the incident, as rescue operations are ongoing.

It is learned that the catamaran originally carried 34 people when it left the Mantanani island resort at 3pm on Thursday before it sprung a leak at 4pm.

Sixteen tourists were taken back to the resort by other boats before weather conditions worsened, making it difficult for smaller boats to operate in the area.

Pulau Mantanani is about an hour's boat ride from Kota Belud, which is about 90km from Kota Kinabalu.

The island is a popular snorkelling and swimming spot for tourists.

'It was flat calm … the wave came from nowhere'

Seven people rescued after boat started to sink off Kangaroo Island

June 14, 2016 5:09am

CHRIS Kennedy is a lucky man after surviving his third boat capsize on Kangaroo Island.

What started out as a beautiful, calm fishing day was met with panic as a freak wave hit a charter carrying its skipper and six people onboard and the boat flipped sideways.

The boat ran into trouble about 1.30pm at North Page Island near American River, between Penneshaw and Kingscote.

Mr Kennedy, 59, of Littlehampton, was on a fishing trip with his son and other work mates and they decided to stop at an island to take photos of seals.

“It was flat calm, and the wave just came from nowhere,” Mr Szczepanik said.

“It lifted us up and threw us front on and then sideways.

“The skipper, Alan, tried to reverse out then it hit us again and then we went sideways in the rocks.”

Luckily the passengers and the skipper managed to get into the life raft before they were thrown into the water.

“We had to paddle away from the rocks and slowly towards the island,” Mr Kennedy said.

“It was pretty scary ...(but) we were calm and we had a plan.”

Water had seized the motor and the boat was on its nose from the impact of the waves.

The survivors waited for up to an hour before another passing boat from Cape Jervis responded to their distress call and came to the rescue.

A Sealink boat also responded to the call for help and, with the skipper, returned to the capsized boat — but the damage was done.

Mr Kennedy said the boat owner was planning his retirement on running charter services but his livelihood was now on hold.

“They had to sink the boat,” he said.

All seven survivors were being brought back to Wirrina Cove, south of Normanville, where they had started their journey earlier on Tuesday.
