In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Several boats capsize in Lake Ontario off Burlington

BURLINGTON — Halton Police say all passengers were accounted for after a sudden wind Sunday afternoon capsized four catamarans near Spencer Smith Park in Lake Ontario.

The catamarans were 500 to 600 metres offshore at 2:40 p.m. when they overturned throwing at least four people in the water who were all wearing life jackets.

Halton, Hamilton and Peel Police marine units as well as the volunteer rescue group TOWARF and the Burlington Fire Department responded. Halton Police Staff Sgt. Gerard Kelly said three people were plucked from the water with a fourth person making it to shore by swimming.

"As it stands now everyone is accounted for and there were no real injuries in regard to this," he said.

Police learned of the incident after receiving numerous calls from people onshore who saw the boats overturn.

"A quick storm came through south Burlington with high winds and we were told at least four catamarans went over on their sides," said Kelly.

As of 4:30 p.m. Sunday "two of the boats had been righted and they are trying to right the other two."

The winds also put an early end to the Appleby Line Street Festival. Gusting winds lifted tents and blew bouncy castles into nearby trees.

The annual festival was halted shortly before 3 p.m. Several people were treated for cuts and scrapes and Halton EMS transported one male to hospital.

The City of Burlington confirmed that the festival was closed about an hour earlier than usual due to safety concerns. Burlington Hydro also responded to the area due to the reports of power outages.

Good Samaritan rescues 22 people, including schoolchildren, after b...

June 2, 2016 | 9:30 PM

Twenty-two people, including more than a dozen school-aged children who were on a field trip researching wildlife, were rescued Wednesday evening from a sinking boat in a remote part of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.

The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. when the U.S. Coast Guard received a mayday call after the 40-foot boat struck an unidentified object near Bloodsworth Island, an area north of the town of Crisfield in Dorchester County.

Aboard the boat, which belonged to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, was a group of fourth-grade students, parents and teacher chaperones from the private Kent School in Chestertown, Maryland, which said it has done a similar trip annually for the past 10 years to allow students to learn about the bay and species that live in it.

But on Wednesday, the boat ran into trouble and immediately began “taking on water” and started sinking, according to officials with the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

The 14 fourth-graders, five adult chaperones and three crew members had on life jackets or immediately put them on, according to police officials. Kent School officials said the students also put on a second life jacket on the boat.

Those aboard were quickly rescued by a waterman who was either fishing or crabbing nearby, police officials said. The man maneuvered his boat close enough to the sinking one so that he and his crew members could help the parents, kids and crew get on board and to safety.

“They were hanging on top of the boat,” said Candy Thomson, a spokeswoman with Maryland’s Natural Resources Police. “The boat was sinking slowly enough that it gave everyone a chance to put their life jackets on, and that was a godsend.”

She said the good Samaritan likely heard the mayday call on the marine radio or saw the boat sinking.

By the time rescuers from local police and fire units, along with the state’s natural resources police, arrived, the waterman had rescued everyone, officials said.

“It is always hard to say what the outcome would have been,” Thomson said of the efforts of the waterman. “In a vessel with 14 children aboard that goes down in a remote area, that’s trouble.”

“We were lucky in two respects – one, everybody was in life jackets and two, that waterman was nearby.”

The waterman took those he rescued to Wingate, a small town along the Honga River, officials said. The captain of the boat was airlifted to an area hospital. His condition was not known but was said not to be life-threatening.

The others who had been on the boat were taken to area hospitals for checkups and were treated for minor injuries and released, according to authorities.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.

Boat capsize: Rescuers battle rough seas

Boat with 32 tourists plus four crew capsized in Thailand

Thai rescue workers battled rough seas Saturday as they resumed the search for a British man missing after a speedboat accident that left three foreign women dead, police said.

The boat, which was carrying 32 tourists plus four crew, capsized Thursday afternoon after it was slammed by a wave near a rocky stretch of coast on Koh Samui, a popular island in the Gulf of Thailand.

Thai officials say three women -- from the United Kingdom, Germany and Hong Kong --  died in the accident, which threw all of the passengers overboard, trapping some under the ship's hull.

Forty rescue workers continued searching Saturday for a missing British man, said an officer from the island's tourist police force.

"The obstacle for today is the rough seas, but we will try our best," Thanakorn Pattananun told AFP.

The tourist was travelling with his wife, who survived the accident, he added.

The boats that ferry tourists around Thailand's popular beaches are notoriously reckless and life vests are often in short supply.

Police have charged the Thai captain who drove the tour boat with negligence leading to deaths and injuries, a crime that carries up to 10 years in prison.

Britain's Foreign Office said Saturday it was in touch with Thai authorities and the victims' families.

Nine anglers rescued after boat capsizes

KOTA KINABALU: Nine anglers, including seven tourists from Hong Kong, were rescued after their boat, lashed by large waves, capsized in the waters in front of Sutera Harbour yesterday evening.

The victims comprised seven tourists from Hong Kong, aged 42 and 60, and two local men, including the boat skipper, in their 30s.

They were plucked from the waters by marine police who came in three patrol boats around 4pm after they had held on to the 28-foot fiberglass boat for about 20 minutes.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said only two men, both Hong Kong tourists, were injured.

“They are reported to be in stable condition after being treated by paramedics.

“None of them were admitted to hospital as they only sustained minor injuries,” he said yesterday.

According to Chandra, investigation revealed that the group left Sembulan jetty at 8am for Pulau Tiga for a fishing trip.

“Around 2pm, the group decided to move to Pulau Mamutic to continue their fishing trip.

“Around 3.30pm, they decided to call it a day and return back to Kota Kinabalu. While on their way back, it started to rain heavily with strong winds, causing the boat to capsize.

All the men were taken to the marine police jetty where they were given medical treatment by paramedics.

At least 21 people including nine children died after a boat capsized in rough waters off the coast of Myanmar’s restive Rakhine state on Tuesday, a UN spokesman said.

The vessel was transporting around 60 passengers from a camp to a local market, according to the UN’s Pierre Peron in Myanmar, who said the majority were internally displaced people.

Rakhine state in western Myanmar is home to many IDP camps housing thousands of ethnic Rohingya, a largely stateless Muslim minority living in apartheid-like conditions after communal violence tore through the region in 2012.

Migrant Boat Sinks in Mediterranean, 400 Refugees Feared Dead

April 18 2016

Several hundred refugees are feared dead after a boat capsized attempting to reach the coast of Italy, the nation's president, Sergio Mattarella, said Monday, according to the Washington Post.

Mattarella told reporters in Rome "yet another tragedy in the Mediterranean in which, it seems, several hundred people have died," seemingly confirming reports on BBC Arabic that roughly 400 people traveling on four boats from Egypt perished after the vessels capsized. The victims are reportedly mainly from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. News of the disaster broke almost precisely one year after around 700 migrants died off the coast of Libya following the capsizing of an overloaded fishing ship.

"What is sure is that we are again with a tragedy in the Mediterranean, exactly one year after the tragedy we had ... in Libyan waters," Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni told Reuters.

The tragedy strikes close to where the migrant crisis, which saw 1 million people arrive in Europe seeking refuge from war and poverty throughout 2015, began. When the crisis was first beginning to attract international attention in 2014, National Geographic noted Italy is "uniquely exposed in Europe because of its long, meandering coastline and numerous islands, is often seafaring migrants' point of entry into Europe. The country leads the continent in arrivals by sea, which, in the first quarter of 2014 alone, increased by 823% over the same period in 2013."

In 2016, the migrant crisis set a disturbing January record of at least 244 dead, "nearly three times the 82 people who died last January, and overwhelmingly more than the 12 people who died in January 2014," Al-Jazeera reported. By Feb. 9, the tally had shot to 409, with arrivals up tenfold compared to a year before. According to Newsweek, efforts to slow migration by increasing border patrols may have simply forced migrants into more dangerous routes.

Five rescued from Kangaroo Island waters after boat capsizes

Updated earlier today at 6:53am

Five men have been rescued after their fishing boat capsized about one kilometre off the eastern part of Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

Police said the men let off an emergency flare off Cape Willoughby about 4:50pm.

Police Water Operations coordinated a response with Australian Search and Rescue who contacted a RAAF Orion aircraft flying in the area.

The plane's crew located the upturned boat with the men clinging to the hull of the vessel and relayed their position.

Meanwhile the Sea Link ferry, which had an off-duty police officer on board and had just left Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island heading back to Caper Jervis, was contacted and diverted to the area.

The five men, aged between 35 and 45, were taken on board a recreational fishing vessel that was also in the area and then transferred to the Sea Link vessel.

Police said there were no injuries from the incident.

The 6m upturned fishing vessel was capsized by a large wave and has been towed to shore.

PBSO Deputy, 9-Year-Old Son Among 3 Dead in Boating Accident

The group left in a 24-foot Sea Ray boat around 8 a.m. Sunday for a fishing trip

April 10, 2016

A Palm Beach sheriff's deputy and his 9-year-old son are among three family members killed in a boating accident Sunday near Stuart, Florida, according to authorities and family.

Relatives said the missing boaters included Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Fernandas Jones and his son, 9-year-old Jaden. Jones served as a Miami-Dade police officer for 20 years before joining the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, where he worked for a year and half, his wife said.

The first body was found on a beach around 7 a.m. Monday near the House of Refuge at 301 SE MacArthur Blvd., NBC affiliate WPTV in West Palm Beach reports, citing Martin County Fire Rescue. The sheriff's office later tweeted that two other bodies were found.

WPTV's Chopper 5 spotted a capsized boat south of the St. Lucie Inlet at 8:20 a.m., and an MCSO helicopter picking up a man nearby.

The group left in a 24-foot Sea Ray boat around 8 a.m. Sunday for a fishing trip, according to Jones' wife, Michelle, who called authorities around 10 p.m. to report them missing. She said the men usually fished offshore near Stuart or the Intracoastal Waterway.

A small craft advisory was in effect Sunday, meaning strong winds were capable of producing dangerous wave conditions.

Search crews from Lake Worth and Fort Pierce were sent out to search for the missing boaters, according to the Coast Guard.

The vessel went down with four crew on board, but one was rescued and taken to hospital by helicopter.

A lifeboat and helicopter remain at the scene so the search can continue.

A Maritime & Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said the vessel went down in relatively calm weather conditions.

She said: "In the early hours of April 9 a fishing vessel sank off the Western Isles, Scotland, with four crew on board.

Ship runs aground at decommissioned Swedish nuclear plant

April 8, 2016
The Associated Press

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A ship used to transport nuclear waste ran aground Friday at a decommissioned nuclear power in southern Sweden, authorities said.

The Swedish Maritime Administration says M/S Sigrid had no dangerous cargo aboard and was on its way into the harbor outside the Barseback nuclear plant whose reactors were closed in 1999 and 2005.

The government agency said the cause of the grounding was unclear. There were no reports of leakages from the ship, nor had the hull been damaged. A pilot was onboard the M/S Sigrid when it ran aground.

The agency later said a tugboat was on location and divers would investigate the hull later Friday

The entrance to the port is sensitive to winds, the administration said. The case was not considered as a rescue operation because the vessel has not sent out an emergency call, it added.

The plant is set to be dismantled starting in 2023. All nuclear fuel, which contained most of the radioactive substances, has already been removed, according to the plant's website.
