In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? Authorities have raised the alert for a volcano in eastern Indonesia and told hundreds of residents to evacuate following increased activity.Mount Egon in East Nusa Tenggara province had rumbled since Tuesday morning as its magma pressure increased, said Sutopo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency on Wednesday.
About 600 residents living in a village near the peak have been advised to evacuate, as the exclusion zone has been extended from 1.5 kilometres to 3 kilometres, he said.
The alert was raised to the second-highest level.
The 1703-metre volcano last erupted in 2008, forcing more than 10,000 people to flee.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is noted for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and the country is home to 127 active volcanoes.

Bromo Erupts; Spews Volcanic Materials Up to 4,000 Meters

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bromo eruption is reported to have resulted in spews of volcanic ash to a height of more than 4,000 meters above sea levels on Tuesday, January 12.
The Bromo Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in Cemoro Lawang hamlet, Probolinggo, said that smoke and volcanic ash erupted from the crater with strong pressure up to 1,800 meters above the summit crater, or 4,129 meters above sea level.
From Tuesday past midnight until morning, three eruption quakes occurred with duration between 9.44s to 17.89s and a maximum amplitude of 35-36 millimeters. Rumbles continued to be heard from the crater, while vague firelight can be seen from the active crater.
According to the observation post, from this morning until 12.00 pm, four eruption quakes occurred with durations between 10.69 and 14.72s with a maximum amplitude of 25-35 millimeters.
The current status of Bromo's activity still remains at level III or standby.

Shiveluch volcano in Russia's Kamchatka erupted once again on Sunday, as the volcano's activity continues to grow, potentially leading to a major eruption.
The Shiveluch volcano in Russia's Kamchatka territory woke up on Sunday morning local time, releasing a plume seven kilometers up in the atmosphere, the Kamchatka Branch of the Russian Academy of Science's Geophysical Service said.
According to satellite data, an ash plume 31 km wide, extended for about 121 km to the west-northwest of the volcano.
The Shiveluch volcano released ash plumes throughout 2015, at times releasing enough ash to carpet nearby towns. The new eruption led the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) to issue an orange warning, meaning that while a major eruption is not imminent, it is nevertheless a danger to aircraft.
The volcano continues to erupt, according to the response team. Seismologists have previously predicted that the volcano's activity would continue to rise over time.
"Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) [above sea level] could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft," the KVERT warning also sai.

Soputan Eruption Victims Face Dire Water Shortage (Jan 5)
Victims of Mount Soputan's recent eruption in Southeast Minahasa, North Sulawesi province, are facing dire water shortages. "Residents of the villages of Pangu, Pangu Satu, and Pangu Tiga, are particularly affected," said an official of Southeast Minahasa's Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Erick Manaroisong in Ratahan on Wednesday.
According to Erick, the areas' main water supply have been tainted by volcanic ash released by the volcano, which has continued to erupt. "Furthermore, most residents' water reservoirs are not covered - which allows loose volcanic ash to pollute the water, turning it murky brown and rendering it unsafe for human consumption," he said.
Residents are still scrambling for clean water, which is getting harder to get as the eruption continues. "The villages' tap waters have been polluted by the ash, so we can't use it to cook, or even to wash," said Rina Saweho, a resident of Pangu.
Local wells, continued Rina, are no different, as most are left open and exposed to the elements. "The eruption happened so suddenly that we had no time to cover our wells," she said.
Pangu village chief, Jafry Kawulusan said that all three villages are faced with the same problem, because the main water supply comes from the same source - a spring in Rangkuli Forest. "We welcome any aid from whomever's willing to help," he said
The regent of Southeast Minahasa, James Sumendap, who visited the villages to inspect the local water supply, advises residents to refrain from using the tainted water - both from wells as well as the local tap water supply. "It is unsafe for human consumption - we will ship out clean water to affected villages, and we will continue to do so until water quality across all villages returns to normal," he said.
It is known that BPBD has dispatched one 5,000 litre water tanks for each villages. "These are aids given by South Minahasa BPBD, Tomohon BPBD, and North Sulawesi Provincial BPBD," said the Head of Southeast Minahasa's BPBD, Joppie Mokodaser.
A powerful explosive eruption occurred at the volcano during 4-6 January. It began with a series of at least 4 powerful explosions between 20:50 on 4 Jan and up to the next morning, producing tall ash plumes that rose 4-6 km above the volcano and drifted north.
At least some of the explosions also triggered pyroclastic flows reaching the southern base of the summit cone. Moderately strong ash fall of 1-2 cm occurred in villages about 10 km to the NE of the volcano.
Apart from significant damage to farmland because of the ash cover, no injuries or damage to infrastructure were reported. The airport of Manado had to be closed for 2 days.
In the course of the second day (5 Jan), the activity at the volcano changed to violent lava fountaining from a fissure vent at the summit of the cone, producing lava flows that descended the cone.

Mt. Soputan Alert III, Official: No Evacuation Needed Yet

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Soputan in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, began showing volcanic activity. On January 4, the Center for Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status to Alert III.
Spokesman for PVMBG, Sutopo Puwo Nugroho, said that Soputan has erupted and propelled dark pyroclastic clouds. “Bright lava can also be seen flowing down the east side of the mount,” he said.
Sutopo said that evacuation is not yet necessary, although ashes have been spotted in some areas.
Soputan volcanic activity adds more threat to Indonesia, as Bromo, Karangetang, and Lokon are also in Alert III status. Out of 127 volcanoes in Indonesia, 20 of which have been on Alert status, with Sinabung topping other mounts.

Nicaragua: Momotombo spews gas and lava for 2nd time in a month after series of quakes on Christmas Day

Managua (AFP) - A volcano in Nicaragua that has been dormant for 110 years spewed gas and lava Sunday (3rd January) for the second time in a month.
The volcano known as Momotombo in the west of the Central American country rumbled into activity before dawn, but then calmed down again, the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies said.
No one living near the mountain was hurt, it said.
Momotombo stands 1,297 meters (4,255 feet) high, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital Managua, separated by a large lake called Lago Xolotlan.
On December 1 the volcano belched gas and ash and then lava that poured onto uninhabited areas on the slopes of the mountain.
Then on Christmas Day the volcano was rattled by some 20 small earthquakes of up to 3.0 on the Richter scale, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).
Its last big eruption dates back to 1905.

Another double eruption has sent clouds of dust and ash pouring two kilometres into the Mexican sky from theColima volcano.
Mexico has over 3000 volcanos but only 14 are active. Colima has been bubbling nearly all year. It last exploded in 1986.
Colima is one of Mexico’s most active volcanos, so the level of activity is not in itself unusual, although seismologists worry it could be indicative of a major release somewhere else along the Pacific-Andean seismic “Ring of Fire” coming soon.
Of course it is also providing local tour operators with a bonanza of tourists wanting to get safely closer to the spectacular light show.

Kanlaon Volcano spews ash anew
Mount Kanlaon in Negros Oriental province spewed ash anew on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
Citing seismic records, Phivolcs said the eruption which started at around 1:29 p.m. from the volcano’s active crater lasted five minutes.
“The event was accompanied by a rumbling sound heard in Brgy. Cabagnaan, La Castellana, Sitio Guintubdan, Brgy. Ara-al and Brgy. Yubo, La Carlota City. From the southeastern side of the volcano, the eruption plume was observed through cloud cover to have reached 1000m above the active crater, although it may have lofted as high as 4500m above the summit based in pilot reports,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.
“Traces of light ashfall were reported in Sitio Guintubdan, Brgy. Ara-al, and Brgy. La Granja, La Carlota City and reached as far as the Municipality of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental,” it added.
Phivolcs said Kanlaon, one of the most active volcanoes in central Philippines, exploded for about 30 minutes last Nov. 25, which prompted Phivolcs to raise alert level 1 over the volcano. A minor eruption was also reported last Dec. 12.

Mexico's Colima volcano spews towering ash column

The Colima volcano in western Mexico spewed ash to a height of 2 kilometers (6,550 feet) above its crater on Thursday morning, the emergency management office in Jalisco state said.
The first ash column was emitted at 7:17 a.m. (1317 GMT), while the second was ejected at 11:25 a.m. (1725 GMT), both in a northeasterly direction.
The volcanic alert remains on yellow, although the emergency management office urged people to be aware of the possibility of falling ash and to follow recommendations such as covering doors and windows with wet towels and blocking sewers and storm drains.
The Colima volcano has an elevation of 3,860 meters (12,655 feet) above sea level and straddles the border between the western states of Jalisco and Colima.
Along with Popocatepetl in central Mexico, it is considered one of the country's most active volcanoes. EFE
