In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

5 rescued when 1 boat sinks, another strands off Sakonnet

Posted Oct. 14, 2015 at 9:31 AM

LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. -- Five men were rescued from two boats that became disabled, with one eventually sinking, in the water off Sakonnet Point Wednesday night.
Two men on board a 17-foot boat called friends for help when the vessel began taking on water in choppy seas between the Sakonnet Lighthouse and West Island shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, said Middletown Fire Capt. Adam Westman.
The three friends arrived to help in a 16-foot boat, but their engine failed.
While the two men in the sinking 17-foot boat were trying to board the 16-foot boat, one cut his head, Westman said.
A 45-foot motor life boat from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill in Newport responded to help, but could not reach the stranded vessels because of the shallow water and rocks.
The Middletown Fire Department's smaller boat did reach the stranded boaters and took them to shore at the Sakonnet Yacht club while the Coast Guard provided light flares, Westman said.
The 17-foot boat sank and the 16-foot was anchored where the rescue took place.

Massive shipload of cattle sinks in piranha-infested Amazon

A Lebanese-flagged ship carrying 5,000 cows sank in the Amazon River this week, spilling 700 tons of diesel fuel into the hemisphere’s longest waterway.

The “Haidar” sank on Tuesday near the Brazilian city of Belem, on the mouth of the Amazon. Brazilian officials are working around the clock to contain a 2 mile long slick of diesel that’s making its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

The cause of the wreck is still unknown. A cellphone video shows the boat capsizing in front of a local port.

Local residents managed to save some of the boat’s bovine cargo, but most of the cows reportedly drowned in the flooded hull of the ship. Others managed to swim out of the boat, but were dragged down by the current of the piranha-infested waters.

Environmental authorities are collecting and burning hundreds of cattle carcasses that have washed up on shore down river, according to Brazilian website UOL.

The Haidar’s tragedy is not only a Brazilian problem. The large load of cattle, owned by Brazilian beef company Minerva, was headed to Venezuela, a country that has been struggling with food shortages -and long lines at supermarkets- for months.

With price controls, expropriations and economic mismanagement decimating Venezuela’s local cattle industry, the South American country has become increasingly dependent on food imports and gets much of its beef from Brazil.

Venezuelan cattle ranchers estimate that the sunken load was worth around $50 million, but the losses should be covered by the shipping company, according to Minerva.

12 missing after boat sinks in Bohai Sea

10-09-2015 11:00 BJT

Four people were rescued and another twelve are missing after a fishing boat sank off the coast of Tangshan in north China's Hebei Province.

A local maritime search and rescue center said the boat sank at about 2am in the Bohai Sea. There were 16 people on board. The cause of the accident is being investigated, and rescue work is under way.

Local authorities have mobilized about 80 rescue ships and 6 helicopters to search the area of more than 600 square kilometres, but strong sea winds are adding extra difficulties to the rescue operation.

"Today, we are expanding the maritime search and rescue. Here is where the boat capsized. Inside here is the scope of our maritime search with rescue ships reaching as far as 528 square kilometres. Outside this area, up to 686 square kilometres will be searched by helicopter," said Wang Xiaolei, Maritime Search and Rescue Center of Tangshan

USCG Mobilizes After Cargo Ship Sinks Off Haiti

Cutter_Northland

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of a cargo ship with 12 crew members aboard reportedly sinking, 51 nautical miles northwest of Haiti, Thursday night.

The 212-foot cargo ship reportedly started sinking earlier in the evening due to the severe weather conditions from Hurricane Joaquin.

Coast Guard 7th District Command Center watchstanders received a relay message from Her Majesty’s Coast Guard after they received an Inmarsat satellite message stating the Bolivian-flagged cargo ship Minouche, listing 30 degrees to port and all 12 crew members aboard were making preparations to abandon ship.

The Coast Guard immediately diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Northland and launched a helicopter crew forward deployed in Great Inagua, Bahamas.

A good Samaritan vessel and member of the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System, commonly referred to as AMVER, has also been diverted to the vessels last known position.
