WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Four killed, six injured as building collpases in Imo

August 13
14:31 2017

Four persons were killed and six injured on Sunday when a three-storey building collapsed in Owerri, Imo state.

The incident occurred at 9 Egbu road, by fire service junction in the state capital.

Although state emergency management agency is yet to issue an official statement on the incident, reports have it that a “structural defect” led to the collapse.

The landlord, whom the state police command said is currently at large, allegedly added two more floors to the initial structure without approval from relevant agencies.

Chris Ezike, the state commissioner of police, said no arrest has been made.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing at the scene of the incident.

MUMBAI, India — A five-story building came crashing down Tuesday in Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment capital, killing at least six people and injuring nine others, a state official said. About two dozen people were feared trapped under the rubble.

The cause of the collapse of the building, which housed 15 families, was not immediately known, officials said.

Rescuers were digging through the rubble in search of more victims, said Tanaji Kamble, a spokesman for the Mumbai Municipal Corp.

The injured people were taken to a hospital, he said.

A resident said the building was 35 years old.

Also Tuesday, a portion of a 100-year-old building collapsed in the eastern city of Kolkata. There were no reports of casualties but some people were feared trapped, police said.

Most residents left the building after noticing pieces of concrete falling, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Building collapses are common in India during the monsoon season from June to September. High demand and lax regulations encourage some builders to cut corners, use substandard materials or add unauthorized extra floors.

In 2013, a building being constructed illegally in Mumbai caved in, killing 74 people in the country’s worst building collapse in decades.

EXCLUSIVE: Three dead, several trapped as three-story residential building collapses in Liaqatabad

KARACHI: At least three people, including two children and a woman, were killed and several others trapped as a three-story residential building on Monday late night collapsed at Liaqatabad No, 9 in Karachi.

According to details, a three-story residential building comprised of several flats collapsed in the wee hours of Tuesday, where three dead bodies were reportedly recovered from the rubble while several others  have trapped under debris.

Rescue workers and rangers rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operation with locals and trying their best to bring the trapped people out of rubble to save their lives.

The collapse was blamed on substandard building material. The impact of the collapse also affected nearby houses which were later evacuated.

It is a much populated and congested area of the metropolis, where now heavy machinery and other emergency management under the supervision of deputy mayor Arshad Vohra have reached on the spot to properly start the rescue operation.

“I was in my home when my friend called to alert me that the building near my house had collapsed. “On my arrival, I discovered that only three the victims were so far rescued. We are hoping that others will be rescued alive from the rubble." a local resident of the area said.

Other residents of the area told that at least four families resided in the ill-fated building and a hotel and other shops were also established on the first floor of the building.

Manipur cut off as crucial Barak Bridge collapses

Imphal, July 17, 2017 11:52 IST

Updated: July 17, 2017 13:59 IST

The highway, considered as the second lifeline of the border state, assumed greater importance after a massive landslide at Viswema in neighbouring Nagaland cut off the major Imphal-Dimapur national highway.

The crucial Barak bridge located along the National Highway-102 collapsed on Monday morning, cutting off land-locked Manipur from rest of the country, an official said.

The bridge collapsed when a 10-wheeler goods-laden truck was passing through it, a transport department official said, adding that the structure was in a fragile condition since last night.

This has left around 200 goods-laden trucks coming from Jiribam town to Imphal stranded. Repairing works are being carried out on war-footing, the official said. The Barak bridge is located along the Imphal-Jiribam highway and passes through the hill district of Tamenglong.
