Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Indonesia, Anak Krakatau volcano - Volcano still producing white smoke

Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) in the Sunda Strait was still producing white smoke on Wednesday (23/11/2011) The Disaster Mitigation Center Vulkanalogi and Geology (PVMBG) still sets the status of the mountain level III or Standby.

"In the past two days, GAK continuously produced white smoke, "said the Head of the Rural Post Pasauran Monitor GAK, Sub Cinangka, Serang Regency, Banten Province, Anton Tripambudi. He explained that the smoke from the stomach of a white GAK and leads to the high seas . "Cloud of smoke as usual, the wind carried it to the sea," he said.

With such condition, the mountain is still undergoing an eruption and seismic activity, yet interesting PVMBG recommendation of evacutaion is just 2 mile radios around GAK.."We are still prohibited anyone approaching the seismic location up to a radius of two miles, because it is still dangerous, "he said.

PVMBG prohibition made by the date of 30 September 2011, performed for the common good, because the material released by GAK are still dangerous due to seismic activity. However, he announced to the fishermen and local people to keep doing normal activities, like fishing.

Chile, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex - Chile volcanic ash halts flights

Flights were cancelled for several hours in Uruguay and Argentina Tuesday due to volcanic ash from the four-month-long eruption of the Puyehue volcano in Chile, airport authorities said.

Laura Vanoli, Uruguay's chief aeronautic meteorologist, said the country was almost entirely covered by an ash cloud.

"It's remnants of ash," she said, adding that there will be a risk of disruption as long as the volcano remains active.

About a dozen flights by airlines including Aerolineas Argentinas, American, Iberia and TACA were suspended in Uruguay, while other flights were delayed, the website of the Carrasco International Airport serving Montevideo said.

In Buenos Aires, airport authorities said some 20 flights were cancelled, and said other flights were delayed because of poor visibility due to the ash.

However by the afternoon air traffic was returning to normal in both Uruguay and Argentina, though with delays due to the postponed flights.

Since the volcano's eruption on June 4, air travel in much of the southern cone of South America, and as far away as Australia, has been periodically disrupted by ash clouds streaming east out of the Chilean Andes.

Chile's National Geology and Mining Service said that ashes from the Puyehue -- which continues belching, though at a lower intensity -- could affect air travel for months.

The decision to delay or cancel flights is taken by the airlines over concern about how the fine ash would affect airplane engines.

EL HIERRO - CANARIAS

Scientists confirm the emergence of a new eruptive mouth Tuesday November 22, 2011

Scientists at the Institute of the Canaries have confirmed new gas discharge that occurred on Monday at 200 meters from the usual focus
Scientists from INVOLCAN have confirmed the observation of a new sudden release of volcanic gases by the Unit Guard Helicopter civil Canary at 11:40 hours on Monday November 21, as published by this organization in his Facebook page. This visible emission of volcanic gases was located about 200 meters east of the main zone of gas emissions and volcanic material that occurs south of the Restinga from mid-October 2011.

Upon returning to the area with scientists from INVOLCAN , the intensity of the fumes disappeared, as has happened on some occasions as the November 4, 2011, so that the second helicopter GES could not take pictures of the event. The observations confirm the existence of shock or sudden pulses of gas by submarine eruptive activity south of the Restinga then disappear but are of great use to detect and locate new or mouths emission sources associated with this eruptive volcanic process.

The geographic coordinates of this new sudden release of gases has been North 27 º 607547 - 991288 -17 º West.

Mexico on Alert over Popocatepetl Volcano Eruption

Mexico's largest active volcano Popocatepetl continued to spew smoke and ashes on Monday near the capital, the National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) said.

Popocatepetl, located some 60 km southeast of the Mexico City, had a total of four low-intensity exhalations after a powerful explosion around midday on Sunday, Carlos Gutierrez, head of research at Cenapred, said.

The smoke was clearly visible from the capital with some 20 million inhabitants as well as nearby cities in the central provinces of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico.

Cenapred maintained a yellow alert for the area, Gutierrez said

Access to the volcano has been restricted to a radius of 12 km around the crater after Sunday's explosion, which was reported to happen at 12:05 p.m. local time (1805 GMT) and ejected smoke and ash over 7 km high into the air.

The explosion startled nearby residents, but officials said no damage or injuries had been reported so far....

Mexico, Popocatepetl volcano - Popocatepetl volcano has spewed a burst of ash 3 miles (5 kilometers) into the air after breaking through a dome of lava

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano has spewed a burst of ash 3 miles (5 kilometers) into the air after breaking through a dome of lava.

The Popocatepetl volcano erupted with a plume of ash after shaking for several minutes early on Friday. The volcano’s activity has been reported as stable and there is no threat to populated areas. However, authorities have urged people to stay at least seven miles from the area and to await further information from Mexico’s national disaster prevention agency.

Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center says Sunday’s explosion continues a series of moderate eruptions from the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano 40 miles (65 kilometers) southeast of the Mexican capital. Mexico City Civil Protection Director Elias Moreno told Foro Television that there were no reports of danger or of ash falling on nearby communities....

El Hierro volcano - Six earthquakes recorded in one day,  harmonic tremor remains very strong

Six earthquakes have been recorded in just one day on the turbulent island of El Hierro in the Canaries. According to the National Geographical Institute (IGN), these earth movements took place on Saturday morning between midnight and around lunchtime. None of them exceeded 2.8 on the Richter scale, which is just enough to be felt but not to cause damage. All of these were found to have their epicentre in the village of Frontera and occurred at a depth of 16 to 22 kilometres below the surface. The strongest earthquake occurred at 09.20hrs on Saturday morning and measured 2.8 on the Richter scale, whilst the others were mainly in the early hours of the morning with two at 1.9, and three more at 1.6, 2.4 and 2.7. A spokesperson from the IGN said that on Thursday there was an 'abrupt and noticeable' drop in the volcanic energy from the ongoing subaquatic eruption off the coast of the island.

El Hierro volcano - IGN recorded 14 seismic movements in El Hierro

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded 14 seismic movements in El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, during the early hours of this morning, all of them to the north east of the town of Frontera and all below 2.5 on the Richter scale. The first of today's earthquakes was recorded at 00.14 hours and had a magnitude of 1.7 and occurred 19 kilometres below sea level to the north east of Frontera, on the island's northen side. The biggest of all, measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale, happened at 02.30 hours and 20 kilometres down below the earth's surface. Scientists working in the area yesterday also recorded greatly increased quanities of helium and carbon dioxide dissolved in the sea water to the south of La Restinga, right next to the area where the biggest bubble of volcanic gases is constantly bursting. The helium level in the water has reached levels of between 4,000 and 35,000 times greater than normal levels for sea water.

El Hierro volcano - The volcanic tremor measured at El Hierro remains at very high levels, beaches from Puerto Naos until La Restinga will be closed to the public because of  an accumulation of toxic gases

The volcanic tremor measured at El Hierro remains at very high levels and in sharp contrast to visible activity, feeding speculations and fear about new volcanic vents opening up somewhere on or near the island. Some fear such a new vent could be located in the El Golfo Bay, near Frontera, since most of the (deep) earthquakes in recent days are concentrated beneath the northern sector of the island. However, so far, these earthquakes are very deep (ca. 20 km) and do not point towards an immediate eruption in this area, rather are intrusions of dykes in the upper mantle beneath the island. At La Restinga at the southern tip of the island, we could observe a slight increase in activity from the submarine vent ca. 1 km off the coast today: every 15-30 minutes, brownish plumes of water could be seen upwelling, flattening the ocean surface and somtimes producing dark stretches of floating mud(?) and foam (not steam!) in a circular area around the vents. The Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) has been recording highly elevated levels of Helium and CO2 gas dissolved in the water around La Restinga, another sign that the submarine eruption is still in progress.

PEVOLCA, the committee of Emergency services, Scientists and Authorities has decided that the beaches from Puerto Naos until La Restinga will be closed to the public because of  an accumulation of toxic gases. La Restinga has no problem as it is more an open space according to the scientists. We regularly display the La Restinga air quality, which was indeed good this morning.
PEVOLCA also said that the 4 km radius in the Las Calmas see remains closed to navigation. Only the Guardia Civil and both Oceanographic ships are allowed in the eruption waters.
