Have you experienced service disruptions for lengthy times in your area?
It seems over the last few months my own cell phone service has really been erratic. 
I have been unable to call out for hours on end. I thought it was just my own phone when it happened.
A recent outage in Nevada happened and I was stunned to find out I was not the only one. My own cell phone was not calling anywhere. Land phone lines and credit card processors were not working either for certain transactions most the day, shops I went to were using manual hand-written invoices or cash only and so on. Internet services were also down for hours. This experience was totally disruptive.
Here are some explanations that seem a bit sketchy at best:
Cut line affects phone service

ELKO — Northeastern Nevada communities lost telephone, Internet and cellphone service in a spotty outage that was the result of a cut in a fiber optic cable between Reno and Elko.
“It was a fiber cut in the Verizon territory,” said Karen Miller, a spokeswoman for Frontier, which has traffic riding on the cable.
She said service was down from 10:40 a.m. Tuesday to 8:54 p.m. for Frontier customers who lost long-distance service and in some cases all services.
Tonopah lost high-speed Internet service only, Miller said.
Jarryd Gonzales of Verizon said he had no reports of any outages in Nevada, and he thought the cut line is Frontier’s now that Verizon sold land lines in Nevada to Frontier.
There were reports the line was cut near Lovelock, but Miller didn’t have confirmation.

An as yet unexplained outage left much of rural Nevada without telephone or internet service for much of Tuesday.
Roughly corresponding to AT& T’s service area, phone and internet service was off for most of the vast Nevada outback from Winnemucca to Ely and as far south as Caliente and Pahrump according to reports.
Some if not most cel phone service was also interrupted.
“Service was cut,” said a spokesman from the White Pine county Sheriff’s Department. “We were not given an explanation.”
Telephone and internet service in most of elko county serviced by Frontier Communications was not affected nor was service in Wendover, Utah with service provided by Centracom.

Customers Back Online After Power Outage in Reno

RENO, NV - NV Energy officials say birds started a fire on a power line in Reno, causing that line to lose power, affecting about 1800 customers.
It started around 3:30pm Wednesday in the area of Wells and Kuenzli, even affecting the VA hospital on Locust Street, which has backup generators. All the power has been restored. Around midnight most of the customers except 10 had their power restored, the final 10 customers got power back around 2 a.m.

Now there's a first...since when do BIRDS cause power outages on major power lines???? Must have been a bird the size of a pterodactyl chewing on the lines...!
Around Oct 16th my own cell phone would not make a single call to anywhere for about 4-5 hours. Here is another discussion about it as it was happening East to West coast US:

International Outage causes havoc:
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) – The BlackBerry outage that began on Monday started out as an inconvenience. Three days and five continents later, it’s a disaster that has hit the Bay Area.
The outage, which knocked out e-mail and BlackBerry messaging service, initially affected customers starting Monday in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of South America. Wednesday, customers in Asia as well as in the U.S. and Canada also started to see delays in e-mails and BBM messages.
