Children are being abandoned on Greece's streets by their poverty-stricken families who cannot afford to look after them any more.

Youngsters are being dumped by their parents who are struggling to make ends meet in what is fast becoming the most tragic human consequence of the Euro crisis.

It comes as pharmacists revealed the country had almost run out of aspirin, as multi-billion euro austerity measures filter their way through society.

Sadly, this does not surprise me. My baby was "allegedly" shaken by his former sitter three months ago (miraculously he has made a full recovery), and in the ONE month following his release from the hospital, the county sheriff department here in my area told me there were 6 OTHER reports of abuse besides my son's that were filed. This was Dec 2011.  And those 6 reports were only for our rural county- imagine multiplying that by each county in each state in the US, and there is surely a depression happening. :(  Let's all keep those children (and ours!) in our prayers as these transitions come.

@Arto - I agree, I get tears in my eyes every time I hear of even one child hurt or abandoned... now more than ever.

Zetas right again! thanks  Beenthdonedat.  As shocking as this news report is, it is only just the beginning of what will be coming.

Thanks very much for this blog.   The evidence of the Second Great Depression is overwhelming, but an admission of that would be Zetas right again!

I have tears in my eyes reading this. I do not know if I should be angry to the parents? I don't have any children of my own, but dumping children to streets should be the LAST resort. Is this the  STS way to deal with kids when illusion of money and fast life comes to an end? No matter how bad the life gets, you should not turn your back to your family. The children need their parents and you need your children. The worst thing is that this is only the start..
