In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

The TSB has sent a team of investigators to interview the crew in order to determine what happened to the Don Cadegan.

Three fishermen were rescued after their vessel ran aground and sank Monday off Pubnico on Nova Scotia's south shore.

"All crew members, there were three, were rescued by other fishing vessels in the area," said Julie Leroux, a spokeswoman at the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Leroux said she didn't know the condition of the crew members of the Don Cadegan.

The TSB has sent a team of investigators to interview the crew in order to determine what happened.

Information is limited at this time, but Leroux said she hopes for an update later today or Wednesday.

Online ship tracking service marinetraffic.com shows the vessel just off Murder Island, one of the Tusket Islands. According to the website, the Don Cadegan left Lower West Pubnico shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday and ran aground about three hours later.

Local lore attributes Murder Island's name to the number of human remains found on the island, possibly due to fighting between Europeans and First Nations people, or fighting between two warring tribes in the 1700s.

14 MISSING AS CARGO VESSEL SINKS OFF PAPUA

Jayapura. At least 14 people are missing after a cargo vessel sank off the coast of Papua near Asmat, local authorities reported on Monday (15/02) afternoon.

“We received a report on Saturday afternoon at around 10 p.m. local, saying KM Azula sank off the coast,” Muhammad, spokesperson of Mimika Search And Rescue (SAR), said as reported by Antara news agency.

The SAR team located the half-capsized boat in the water off Muara Agats, some 20 kilometers from Asmat, but no rescues were made.

Muhammad said KM Azula, a cargo vessel carrying building materials from Surabaya, likely sank due to its heavy load and poor weather. The vessel has transited at Timika Port in Papua before heading to Asmat.

“We are still searching 14 passengers and crews of the KM Azula,” Muhammad said.

At least three SAR boats have been deployed in the search for missing victims, with police and Navy officers joining the search.

Horrified passengers aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise endure hurricane-force winds and are forced to stay in their rooms as the ship nauseatingly rocks through giant swells

  • Passengers aboard the Anthem of the Seas cruise ship were forced to endure stomach-churning swells as the ship navigated a winter storm
  • Hurricane-force winds of 150mph caused travelers to be trapped in their room for hours as furniture flew around the lobbies and lounges
  • People took to social media to post pictures of the damages and express how 'horrendous' the night of constant rocking on board the ship was
  • The cruise left New Jersey heading to Florida and the Bahamas in a week-long round-trip vacation
  • Royal Caribbean's twitter said four people sustained minor injuries
  • Anthem of the Seas is carrying 4,529 passengers and 1,616 crew
  • The ship will dock mid-day on Monday in Port Canaveral in central Florida

  • Massive: The Anthem of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean, is the third largest cruise ship ever built

Travelers aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship were forced to endure a 'horrendous' night of stomach-churning rocking as the ship made its way through a storm with hurricane-force winds.

The Anthem of the Seas spent hours of the late afternoon into the evening yesterday rocking in huge storm swells, which caused the ship to lean as much as 45 degree off center.

The ship experienced 'extreme wind and sea conditions' that were not expected as it made its way from New Jersey heading to Florida and the Bahamas in a week-long round-trip vacation.

Passengers were told to stay in their rooms starting around 3pm yesterday as furniture slammed about the ship's main halls.

In its statement, Royal Caribbean said four people were injured but not seriously and the damage to public areas and cabins 'in no way affect the sea worthiness of the ship.'

'I'm not being over dramatic by saying it was the scariest moments of my life - having no control in hurricane-like winds for hours on end with baby on board, not being able to leave our cabins.

'Royal Caribbean should be ashamed of themselves for continuing on a course Mother Nature deemed unfit,' angry passenger Shara Strand wrote on Facebook.

The ship is carrying 4,529 passengers and 1,616 crew, according to a spokeswoman.

In a video showing the ominous rain and climbing waves, those on board begin to panic as items can be heard crashing to the floor and sliding across the room.

'Oh, my god. This is all bad. All bad. I'm so nervous.

'Look at this wave! We're going to go flying. I told you! What did I say? If it gets bad enough we're going to go flying like in those videos on YouTUbe,' a woman can be heard saying in a video posted by Ryan Milburn.

Another passenger, Leanne Petrone, documented the ship's frightening journey on social media.

'Crazy day on board the Anthem of the Seas.

'We've been stuck in our cabins since 3pm, with winds reaching 150 mph.

'Apparently the storm is dying down but the ship is certainly still rocking.

People sent photos to every kind of social media, including Snap Chat, to document the stomach-churning night aboard the Anthem of the Seas

'I couldn't keep a single item on a dresser or counter, everything went flying.

'I can't wait for this to be over. I just want to get to the warm weather and calm seas,' she wrote on Instagram.

Passengers posted video on social media of bottles flying off their shelves as the cruise ship heaved back and forth in the nauseating waves.

Jacob Ibrag, who was on board the Anthem of the Sea, tweeted about his fears from his cabin room, which he was forced to stay in.

'Hungry, tired and seeking prayer from all of you tonight. The #anthemoftheseas has been rocking with no end in sight.

'Don't think I've ever missed land this much. In other news, wish I took those swimming lessons.

'Mother nature decided to take us all for a ride. Just wonder if this storm system could've been avoided,' he wrote.

One picture showed a man who was 'standing straight up' as the room around him appeared tilted.

The ship hit the storm off the coast of North Carolina as it made its way down south.

According to Royal Caribbean, the ship 'encountered some high winds and seas during its transit to Port Canaveral, Florida. In an abundance of caution, the Captain asked all guests to stay in their staterooms until the weather improved.

'There has been no damage to the ship due to the weather. The ship is currently sailing to Port Canaveral.'

Some passengers reported waves as high as the Deck 5 promenade with water leaking into the ship's doorways before watertight doors were closed.

They also said a large white structure broke off the top of the vessel and landed in a pool.

The Coast Guard told CBS News the ship 'diverted course as a precautionary measure' but wasn't in distress, adding that it was in touch with the Royal Caribbean every hour, and that the weather was improving.

The ship is due in Port Canaveral mid-day Monday.

Capsized cargo ship tossed by rough seas off French coast (1/29/16)

A cargo ship listing nearly 90 degrees in the water was being tossed by rough seas Friday off the coast of France, forcing rescue workers to postpone efforts to tow it to shore.

The captain of the capsized Modern Express, sailing with a load of wood in the Bay of Biscay, 300 kilometers (180 miles) off the coast of France, sent out a distress call on Tuesday and its crew of 22 was evacuated by Spanish helicopters.

France's coastal authority said a team of four experts boarded the listing vessel Friday afternoon but the towing operation failed because of waves that were up to 5 meters (16 feet) high. One expert was slightly injured in the operation and the team was withdrawn from the ship, with its deck nearly in the water, before twilight.

A new towing attempt will be made Saturday morning, the coastal authority said.
