In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Cargo ship carrying 43 crew and thousands of cows is missing off Japan after typhoon

Sept 3 2020

TOKYO —A cargo ship carrying 43 crew members and about 5,800 cows has gone missing after running into stormy seas off Japan caused by a typhoon, with one of the crew later rescued, Japan's coast guard and defense ministry said on Thursday.

The 11,947-ton Gulf Livestock 1 sent a distress call around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, 115 miles west of the Japanese island of Amami-Oshima in the East China Sea, as Typhoon Maysak caused powerful winds, torrential rain and turbulent seas in the area.

A naval P-3C surveillance aircraft spotted a Filipino crew member wearing a life vest and waving while bobbing up and down in the water on Wednesday night, the Defense Ministry said. The crew member was picked up by a coast guard patrol boat. He is now able to walk and his condition is not life-threatening, the coast guard said.

But the rest of the crew, 38 Filipinos, two Australians and two New Zealanders, remain missing, with bad weather hampering rescue efforts.

Typhoon Maysak barreled through South Korea’s southern and eastern coasts on Thursday, flooding streams, cutting power to thousands of homes and leaving at least one person dead.

Maysak is just the sixth Category 2 or greater storm to hit South Korea since reliable records began in 1951, but it is the fourth typhoon to hit the Korean Peninsula during this year’s western Pacific typhoon season. It struck just a week after Typhoon Bavi affected the country on its way to a rare landfall in North Korea.

North Korea’s state television news aired real-time footage on Thursday of flooding in port city of Wonsan in the country’s east. State media has not reported any fatalities.

In South Korea’s port city of Busan, a woman died after getting hit by shattered glass, the country’s semiofficial Yonhap news agency reported Thursday.

Nuclear power reactors in path of the storm were automatically turned off early Thursday. Seoul’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the shutdown of four nuclear reactors near Busan was due to electricity supply issues and no radiation leak was detected.

Forecasters expect another powerful storm, Typhoon Haishen, to threaten southwestern Japan and the Korean Peninsula in coming days.

Crusing boat sinks off Haiti killing no less than 17

Crusing boats making the journey to Tortuga island are sometimes overloaded with passengers

Not less than 17 folks, together with two kids, died off Haiti when the crusing boat they had been on sank between Tortuga island and the fishing port of Saint-Louis-du-Nord.

Officers say these on board lived on Tortuga and had been to the principle market in Saint-Louis-du-Nord.

9 folks have been rescued and the search continues for attainable survivors.

About 30 individuals are believed to have been on board when the boat sank.

“It sank due to excessive winds,” the top of the Haitian Maritime and Navigation Service (Semanah), Eric Prévost Junior, stated.

He additionally stated the boat, the Ancelita, was overloaded and had not been granted permission to sail.

Mr Prévost stated that as there was no police presence within the port, the captain of the Ancelita had set sail regardless.

The Haitian President Jovenel Moïse tweeted his condolences, saying he shared the sorrow of the bereaved.

Two people die as boat capsizes in Moreton Bay off Brisbane

Published: 19/08/2020

Two people have died after a boat capsized in Moreton Bay, off Brisbane, despite a dramatic rescue attempt involving a boat carrying children.

Emergency services including a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene just after 1pm on Wednesday, with police divers entering the water.

Earlier, the Queensland Ambulance Service said one person was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have since confirmed that two people have died.

Authorities are unable to confirm how many people were onboard when the boat capsized near Green Island between Manly and North Stradbroke Island.

A boat, with children aboard as part of a school excursion, was first to respond to the overturned vessel as it passed by.

“It’s believed that a boat passing by had observed the boat overturned,” Acting Inspector David Candale said.

“They immediately stopped and rendered assistance to one of the males, and pulled that person from the water.

“Call for assistance was put out via radio.

“As you can imagine, certainly witnessing an event like this is distressing for any person, and I would imagine that would be a similar situation for those persons on the boat.”

It is believed the deceased persons were on the water fishing.

Ferry capsizes in Tanzania, 10 feared dead

Strong winds forced boat carrying 97 passengers to sink, police say

31.07.2020

At least 10 people are feared dead in a ferry accident in a lake in western Tanzania, police said Friday.

James Manyama, a local police officer, said strong winds forced the boat to capsize and sink in the Lake Tanganyika.

A total of 87 people have been rescued so far, he said.

Initial reports suggest 97 passengers were aboard the ferry.

The country's Met Office in mid-July warned of strong winds and high tides in the lake, which is among the deepest in the world.

Good Samaritans help Coast Guard, South Whatcom Fire make rescues after boats capsize

July 21 2020

Good Samaritans helped the U.S. Coast Guard Bellingham Station and the South Whatcom Fire Authority make a pair of rescues — one in the San Juan Islands and one on Lake Whatcom — after boats capsized in the past week.

The two rescues should serve as a reminder not only to the value of life jackets, but also that waters around Whatcom County remain dangerously cold despite the rising summer temperatures.

“Just a few minutes and you’ll be shivering uncontrollably,” South Whatcom Fire Authority Assistant Chief Mitch Nolze told The Bellingham Herald. “People need to be cognizant of water temperatures and how dangerous they can be.”

Four Labourers Dead, 15 Missing as Boat Sinks in Bangladesh

May 27 2020

At least four labourers were dead and 15 remained missing after a boat capsized in the river of Jamuna in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj district, a senior police official said on Wednesday.
The district’s police chief Hasibul Alam told Xinhua over phone that the boat carrying some 70 people, mostly day labourers, sank at about 11:30 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday amid inclement weather.
“The bodies of three labourers were recovered Tuesday night,” he said.
Masud Parvez, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj’s police station of Enayetpur where the accident happened, said: “The body of another ill fated labourer of the boat was recovered this (Wednesday) morning.”
He said divers of the fire service and civil defence and local people resumed search and rescue operations from Wednesday morning.
“At least 15 people are still missing,” he said.
Officials said at least 50 people swam to shore as the boat capsized in a strong current and choppy river waters.
They said rescuers have been struggling against a strong current and choppy waters of Jamuna, one of the three main rivers in Bangladesh.

Parvez said the boat has not been salvaged and brought to shore yet.

Cape Town boat capsizes – latest news and updates
The vessel itself has been dragged to shore, and as of 12:30, one person has made it back to land – they are now helping with the operation. The South African Air Force, the South African Police Service and various emergency service providers are providing assistance at the scene.
Weather warnings had been in place for high winds across the coastal regions of the Western Cape for most of the week, and there may be tragic consequences to these forecasts. The boat itself was discovered 3.7km away from Mouille Point.
Everything we know about the capsized boat
Earlier we spoke with Craig Lambinon, a spokesperson for the NSRI: Amidst the chaos of the rescue protocol, he was able to clarify a few things with us:

The team suspect that there are “nine people missing” – but they cannot be 100% sure of this number.
No fatalities have been confirmed at this stage, but there’s a possibility this will change later in the day.
The expedition was a fishing trip, and rumours of “abalone poaching” have not been verified.
NSRI and their co-operative groups are working establish what exactly caused the boat to capsize.
The search area ranges 4km from the shore from Robben Island to Oudekraal.
