A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.

Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.

The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.

The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.

Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.

It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.

The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.

When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Crane falls at Mich. construction site; 3 hurt

A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.

The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.

Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.

Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.

Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.

The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.

The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

  • A construction crane at a condominium site in Bangkok fell to the ground on Saturday and crushed two workers to death.

The crane fell from the fifth floor of the Supalai Park condominium in Soi Phetkasem 25/3 opposite Siam University in Phasicharoen district.

Workers were using the crane to complete work on a swimming pool and a garden for the 36-storey building, police said.

The crane had been brought in to lift sandbags from the ground to use in the area around the pool. It fell over around noon while it was moving sandbags weighting about one tonne each, killing two workers identified only as Mub and Bin, police said.

The two men were believed to have been Cambodian nationals working for the contractor.

The high-rise condominium building is still under with about 80% of the work completed.

Tower Crane Topples in Russia, Crashes Through Apartment Building (May 27)

Dramatic video footage of a tower crane being used for nearby building construction falling into a nine-storey apartment block home to around 300 people.

Balconies were damaged, as were several cars which were parked outside the building, but no casualties were reported.

Terrified people told how they ran for their lives as the construction crane toppled over and tore through several floors of the nine-storey building.

Olga Bykova, who filmed the moment of collapse from the window of a nearby flat, said she was "shocked" by what she saw.
Incredibly nobody was injured in the complex

One resident said: "We were in the kitchen and heard a loud rattle.

"Later in the window ... a nearby construction crane bent down and began to fall directly on us, on the balcony. We ran to hide in the hallway."

The reason for the crane's collapse remains unclear.

Sumner County Highway Reopened After Crane Collapse

Posted: May 21, 2013 2:53 PM EDT Updated: May 22, 2013 6:21 AM EDT

GALLATIN, Tenn. – Highway 109 in Gallatin reopened Tuesday night after a construction crane collapsed on a vehicle and closed the road for several hours.

Officials with the Gallatin Police Department said a crane fell off a barge on the Highway 109 bridge between Wilson and Sumner Counties just before 1:30 p.m.

The crane landed on top of a sedan, smashing the front of the vehicle.

Police said the driver of the car, Carroll Williams, 60, from Lebanon was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.  The passenger in the car, John Vargas, 61, from Gallatin was not injured.  Police said it was a close call.

"Most of the damage was actually on the hood and motor part of the car," said Officer Bill Storment with the Gallatin Police Department. "The inside passenger part of the car did not sustain much damage."

Witnesses still described the loud sound that accompanied the crane collapse, and said it was a scary sight.

"It was coming down real slow," said Joe Spivey, who witnessed the crash. "When it hit the top of the fence, it snapped and hit the car.  It hit the car like a ton of bricks."

"I just heard a loud crash," said Matt Brinley, who was boating on the river when the crane collapsed. "I didn't know what happened."

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 109 were closed for several hours while crews worked to repair the road. After the crane was removed, Tennessee Department of Transportation officials worked to fill the three foot deep hole in the highway caused by the crane.

The cranes were being used in a construction project to build a new bridge spanning the Cumberland River between Gallatin and Lebanon.

Gallatin Police said it is still unknown what caused the crane to collapse; however, there were some strong wind gusts in the area when it happened. The incident remains under investigation.

Bellevue Fire Department Responds to Crane Collapse at Highway 34 – Missouri River Bridge

Bellevue Fire Department Responds to Crane Collapse at Highway 34 – Missouri River Bridge Construction Site

On Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at approximately 0924 hours, the Bellevue Fire Department responded to a report of a crane collapse at the work site of Highway 34 Bridge Project over the Missouri River just east of La Platte Road.

Initial reports indicated that two parties were atop the 100 foot crane at the time the crane rolled over on its top. The two parties fell into the Missouri River approximately 20-30 feet from the bank of the river and swam to shore. The crane was operating on the Nebraska side of the river at the time of the accident.

The operator was trapped in the operator’s compartment of the crane and was freed by other bridge workers who used cutting torches to extricate the operator. The operator was out of the crane by the time medical personnel arrived on location.

Earth Wobble Watch......as yet another crane collapses in NYC

NYC Crane Collapses; 7 People Hurt, 3 Seriously

A 200-foot crane collapsed onto a building under construction near the East River waterfront Wednesday, injuring seven people, three of them seriously.

A two-story framework for the residential building in the New York City borough of Queens had been erected when the red crane toppled and went sprawling across it around 2:30 p.m. behind a big neon "Pepsi Cola" sign, a local landmark.

The three people who were seriously injured were in stable condition.

One person appeared to have a broken bone. Three people had to be extricated from underneath the crane, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Ferran said.

Preston White, 48, a carpenter from the Bronx, was on his first day on the job at the site in the Long Island City neighborhood.

He had turned to speak to a friend when he heard a popping sound and turned back around.

At that moment, "I saw the cable whipping toward the deck. ... You could just hear it buckling," White said.

The impact shook the scaffolding he was on.

The crane cut down the framework of the building "like a hot knife in butter," White said, because there was no plaster on it yet.

A fellow worker, Russell Roberson, 32, of Brooklyn, said the crane had been up about four days — and went down really fast.

City officials went up in a cherry picker while investigating the accident.

Construction cranes have been a source of safety worries in the city since two giant rigs collapsed within two months of each other in Manhattan in 2008, killing a total of nine people.

Those accidents spurred the resignation of the city's buildings commissioner and fueled new safety measures, including hiring more inspectors and expanding training requirements and inspection checklists.

Another crane fell and killed a worker in April at a construction site for a new subway line. That rig was exempt from most city construction safety rules because it was working for a state-overseen agency that runs the subway system.

During Superstorm Sandy, a construction crane atop a $1.5 billion luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan collapsed in high winds and danged precariously for several days until it could be tethered.

A construction worker is dead and another seriously injured after a crane collapsed Thursday morning on the Butte des Morts Bridge in Winnebago County.

Winnebago County Coroner Barry Busby said the worker died at the scene and the crane operator was taken to a Fond du Lac hospital. Joseph R. Bidler, 35, of Green Bay, died when the crane collapsed around 9 a.m. He was employed by Spancrete Inc. for more than 11 years, according to a news release from Spancrete. The Waukesha-based company is performing subcontractor work for Lunda Construction Co., Black River Falls, on the Highway 41 project.

A second person operating the crane also was injured. Lunda employs that individual and the extent of his injuries is unknown, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

WisDOT spokesman Kris Schuller said the crane was trying to lift a beam on the Butte Des Morts Bridge when it collapsed.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, all lanes of traffic were reopened.

On April 20, another crane being used on the Highway 41 project collapsed in the De Pere area. Raymond Ashenbrenner, 58, of Black River Falls, was killed while unloading a crane in a work area in Brown County. He worked for Lunda, a subcontractor to Brownsville-based Michels Corp.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the cause of that accident. An agency official said its report might not be released until October.

Lunda is building the $54 million project for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Tim Brown, with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s Appleton office, confirmed Thursday an OSHA employee is on the scene investigating the accident. He declined further comment until OSHA has more information.

The ambulance service said they had received emergency calls from witnesses that reported the man had become trapped after the collapse of a crane working on the building.

Strathclyde Police said they were dealing with an "industrial accident" at the site, after receiving 999 calls at around 12.20pm on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the force said the building had been evacuated as a precaution.

Emergency services remain at the office block, which is currently under refurbishment. Network Rail and Transport Scotland are among the organisations based at the building.
