A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.

Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.

The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.

The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.

Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.

It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.

The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.

When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Crane falls at Mich. construction site; 3 hurt

A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.

The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.

Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.

Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.

Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.

The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.

The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

Givataayim: Crane Collapses Near Preschool

A disaster was averted today (Wednesday) in Givataayim when part of a crane collapsed adjacent to a preschool, while children were on the premises.

May 28, 2014, 03:13PM

The frightening incident took place on Jabotinsky street, where, for unknown reasons, the crane collapsed, causing panic at the nearby “Chavazelet” preschool. Children were immediately evacuated to a nearby school.

For a few long minutes, the children waited until parents arrived. Rescue workers arrived at the scene, along with officials from the Givataayim Municipality, including engineers, who attempted to diagnose the catalyst for the incident.

"With luck, no one was hurt" Scene of the collapse

“We arrived in the morning hours to Jabotinsky Street in Givaatayim, and immediately realized that an appendage of the crane became dislodged and crashed to the ground,” recounted David Bar, a paramedic, and among the first to arrive at the scene.

“The appendage stopped, and somehow didn’t continue to fall onto the preschool, which is located directly beneath the building site,” said the paramedic.  “When we arrived at the scene, there was panic and the children were evacuated to a nearby school, until parents arrived, with a lot of luck, this incident ended without injuries.”

Adam Tamburin, atamburin@tennessean.com11:51 a.m. CDT May 5, 2014

A crane collapsed at Joelton Middle School this morning. Three “very minor injuries” were reported, according to Metro Schools spokesman Joe Bass.

The crane was lifting beams this morning at the Old Clarksville Pike campus when a leg gave way, sending the crane crashing into a wall.

Construction has been underway at Joelton Middle all year. Students have been going to school at a temporary satellite campus on West Trinity Lane during construction.

Bass said the accident was “not as bad as it could been.”

“Everybody’s walked away,” he said.

Work has been halted for the day.

A crane toppled over in Stratford Saturday morning, punching a hole in a nearby building.
The accident happened around 9 a.m., at the Moses Wheeler Construction Site, near the Dock Shopping Center on the north side of I-95.

The crane crashed into the office building of the 42nd Boardwalk Marina.
The crane operator was the only person injured in the accident. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The construction site is located near a busy shopping center, and many say it's quite fortunate that only one person was injured.
"It went right through the building and thank God it didn't happen during the week," said Laurie Popadic. "There are normally two guys that are in there. Thank God nobody was seriously, seriously hurt."
"It's making a lot of noise, they are getting a lot of dust on the boats, it's making a mess really," said Mike Evanchik, "but I guess we gotta build a new highway, so you have to put up with it."
The clean-up will continue around the site and the marina for a few days.
The marina is without electricity and does not expect to regain power until Monday at the earliest.

Two crushed to death in crane collapse in Sharjah

Afkar Abdullah / 24 March 2014

The workers were standing under the crane, directing its driver to lift up the concrete, when all of sudden the crane collapsed due to a technical fault.

Two Asian workers died on the spot when a crane lifting a container full of wet cement collapsed at an under-construction building in Sharjah Industrial Area No 2 on Saturday evening.

The two workers were not wearing their helmets at the time of the incident, the police said.

The police operation room received the call at about 4.30pm and an ambulance, rescue unit, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team and patrols were dispatched to the site.

The deceased, identified as R.T.A., a 33-year-old Bangladeshi and N.H.F., a 41-year-old Pakisitani, were employed with a Sharjah-based contracting company.

The co-workers who witnessed the incident said they were standing under the crane, directing its driver to lift up the concrete, when all of sudden the crane collapsed due to a technical fault and hit their heads.

The police shifted the bodies to Al Kuwaiti Hospital. They have registered a case under relevant sections and are trying to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.

The police are also investigating if there was any negligence on the  part of the company in observing safety and protection procedures for its workers.

Metro Crane Crash Kills 1

Published: 12th January 2014 07:55 AM

Last Updated: 12th January 2014 07:55 AM

A Metro Rail worker died and a labourer was injured when a crane came crashing down at the Saidapet station here in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjith Biswal from Odisha. Injured Tira Nayak, also from Odisha, is undergoing treatment at the GH, while Biswal’s body has been moved to the Royapettah Hospital. Metro Rail officials and workers at the site said the incident happened after the night shift ended and the next shift personnel took over.

The person operating the crane loaded materials when the crane swung and collapsed. In the impact, Biswal and Nayak were hit by the edge of the boom, 80 metres from the equipment. “The workers were caught unaware. The boom hit Biswal on his head and he died immediately, while Nayak suffered a leg fracture.

The work at the site, which is being undertaken by Gammon India Ltd. was stopped and would resume after general consultants give a safety clearance. A safety audit is being undertaken, a Metro Rail official said. Interestingly, when the incident happened, work at the underground station was not on.

January has been an unlucky month for Chennai Metro Rail. Last year also a Metro Rail worker was killed in a girder collapse between the Alandur and St Thomas Mount stations. “We will be compensating the worker,” an official said.

The family of Biswal was informed and other formalities will be conducted once the autopsy is completed.

The incident also comes in the wake of safety audit of cranes being conducted after the accident near Pachaiyappa’s College resulted in the death of a migrant labourer and injuries to six others. A Gammon official said the crane complied with all safety norms.

Meanwhile, based on the site engineer’s, Vivek,  complaint, a case was registered against the crane operator, Kadirvan (34), was registered under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Kadirvan was later arrested.

Reports: World Cup stadium suffers collapse

Local media claim that the roof at the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo suffered damage following an accident on Wednesday, believed to have involved a crane working on the construction.

Initial reports claimed that up to three people had been killed, although they are yet to be confirmed.

A statement from Brazilian club Corinthians, who are due to move into the stadium, read: "The board of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista deeply regret the accident earlier in Corinthians Arena."

Crane collapse at World Cup stadium kills at least 3: Report

A crane collapsed on Wednesday at the construction site of a future World Cup soccer stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing at least three people and causing damage to the structure, local media said.

SAO PAULO- A crane collapsed on Wednesday at the construction site of a future World Cup soccer stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing at least three people and causing damage to the structure, local media said.

Newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo said on its website that three people died in the accident. A spokesman for the city fire department told Reuters there were three victims but declined to confirm any deaths.

The newspaper Globo also reported three dead, quoting the fire chief, but said there could be more casualties.

“Awful scenes,” British soccer writer Jack Lang reported on Twitter from the scene.

“Crane was putting final truss of east stand into place. Tiny silver lining: accident occurred at lunch time so fewer workers in the vicinity.”

Lang quoted military police as saying the crane collapsed because the soil beneath it gave way.

His picture of it showed a twisted crane crumbled on top of stadium bleachers.

The stadium, which was scheduled to be finished in the next month or so, is to be the site of the opening game when Brazil hosts the 2014 soccer World Cup in June and July.

“The board of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista deeply regret the accident earlier in Corinthians Arena,” the soccer club said in a brief statement.

Arena Corinthians, one of the stadiums being built in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, was due to open in December, a soccer stadium website said.

Its seating capacity of 48,000 would be augmented with 20,000 removable seats for the opening match of the World Cup. It is located about 17 kilometres from downtown Sao Paulo.

Building started in May 2011, and was 93 per cent completed on Nov. 13, the builder Odebrecht SA reported.

Brazil has struggled to deliver stadiums, public transportation improvements and other World Cup-related projects within the timelines specified by world soccer body FIFA, Reuters reported.

Some construction sites, such as a new terminal at Sao Paulo's international airport, are being built around the clock to try to finish them before the Cup.

  • A crane collapsed on Saturday at a construction site in Downtown Dubai.

Dubai: A survivor of a fatal construction crane collapse in Downtown Dubai said the crane’s ladder had snapped, sending a worker crashing down.

The survivor, an Asian worker who did not wish to be named, told Gulf News the incident occurred between 6.30pm and 7pm on Saturday.

Three workers were killed in the incident, police said, which occurred at an under-construction luxury hotel.

“The ladder of the crane malfunctioned and broke. The worker on top fell to the level I was working at – five metres above the ground – breaking my right leg. I was operated at 1am on Sunday,” the survivor said.

It was not immediately clear what happened to the worker who fell.

Police said the crane operator had “lost control” leading to the collapse. Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, director of Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigations Department, said the operator was taken in to face charges of criminal negligence.

Al Mansouri said the crane had hit five Asian workers, killing three, when it lost balance.

The mangled remains of the crane were clearly visible on Sunday, slanted against the scaffolding and unfinished floors of the construction site. There were no obvious signs of extensive damage to the under-construction property, being developed by a major Dubai real estate company.

The Asian labourers were reportedly killed on the spot. Sources told Gulf News four others – two Filipinos and an Indian – were hospitalised following the accident. One of the injured is reportedly in coma.

Gulf News sources allege that a mechanical malfunction involving the ladder of the tower crane is being investigated as the cause. However, this could not be independently confirmed.

A source from the construction company, who did not want to be named, told Gulf News that three workers were treated at Rashid Hospital and one at Al Baraha Hospital. The source claimed that a survivor at Al Baraha Hospital is in coma.

“The three who died, died on the spot. They were hired workers. The site is currently cordoned off,” he said.

The construction site has no indication of any activity and appears closed. When contacted on Sunday, a manager of the contracting company was “unable to provide a statement at this time”.

Meanwhile at Rashid Hospital the two Filipino workers have undergone surgery.

According to sources, the workers were killed after the “15-tonne” crane crashed. An engineer said on condition of anonymity that “we usually rely on third parties to fix these cranes; they should be specialised and ensure all safety measures”.

Police and ambulance responders had rushed to the scene, evacuating the site and tending to the casualties.

Officials are investigating the incident.
