A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.

Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.

The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.

The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.

Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.

It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.

The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.

When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Crane falls at Mich. construction site; 3 hurt

A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.

The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.

Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.

Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.

Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.

The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.

The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Service on the No. 7 subway line was interrupted for hours Saturday after a crane apparently gave way, causing debris to fall onto the tracks in Queens.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Serviceresumed on the 7 line around 4:25 p.m.

The MTA told CBS2 a crane being used on a construction site adjacent to the tracks dropped a steel beam, causing damage to the eastbound tracks.

Crews worked through the afternoon to remove debris that was scattered on the tracks at College Point Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue.

The MTA said the crane was not being used for any MTA project, but instead was from a commercial structure nearby.

No injuries were reported. Con Edison also responded to the scene.

A construction worker was killed and three people injured when a crane collapsed in Qatar today.

The incident happened near the old Airforce Roundabout around 10am. According to local news reports, the man was an employee of a construction company and was working on the installation of a crane owned by MedGulf.

The crane came crashing down across both sides of the road, causing huge traffic delays in the area. Conditions were windy at the time.

An ambulance was called to the scene and medical staff treated injured people.

Images of the scene on social media channels show what appears to be a body covered in a blue sheet near the wreckage. The crane operator's cab appears to be covered in traces of blood.

Worker killed in crane collapse in Brampton

FIRST POSTED: TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2015 03:55 PM EDT | UPDATED: TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2015 04:27 PM EDT

A man is dead after a crane collapse in Brampton on Tuesday.

Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said Peel Regional Police were notified about an incident around noon at a construction site behind the Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library. A man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene at 10150 Gore Rd.

“Reports are that there was a large crane at the construction site that either tipped over or collapsed, striking a male worker who was on the ground,” Fitzpatrick said.

“At this point we don’t have any information as to what caused the crane to flip over or collapse.”

The Ministry of Labour has taken over the investigation and dispatched inspectors and an engineer to the scene, spokesman William Lin said.

Bondfield Limited is working at the construction site, but the worker was employed by Forma-Con Construction, Lin said.

Crane comes down in Moscow

January 15, 2015 | Comments (0)

Exceptionally strong winds are blamed for the collapse of a tower crane in central Moscow yesterday.

The crane looks like a fairly dated bottom slewing luffing tower crane, its triangular section tower and jib blew over the back of the machine base, with part of it apparently striking the rear end of a passing car. However no one was injured in the incident, which occurred in Testovskaya Ulitsa in the business district. More modern top slewers nearby were unaffected by the winds.

Crane collapses (again) over Emporium expansion on Sukhumvit Road

November 6, 2014 / 14:08 ICT

Workers this afternoon sought to secure a crane which collapsed at the site of new shopping mall on Sukhumvit Road, the second such accident there in two months.

The crane collapsed at around [time] morning while workers at EmsQuartier were trying to lift concrete slabs for installation. The crane collapsed and the cascading planks reportedly damaged electric transformers and water pipes.

It's unknown if anyone was hurt or killed in the accident.

EmQuartier is part of The Mall Group’s massive expansion to Emporium called “The Epicenter of Sukhumvit.”

In September a similar accident occurred raising planks at the project. At the time workers sealed off the building after the accident and did not allow rescue volunteers or reporters into the site, according to BangkokBizNews. They said no one was injured at that time
