"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.
"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Massive Mudslide Next to Minnesota Hospital - June 20
On Thursday evening, massive mudslide on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis occurred nearly impacting the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Fairview. Minneapolis firefighters said no one was injured and the hospital buildings are safe, but the slide, which occurred at about 7 p.m. local time, caused plenty of tense moments as the 100-yard swath of trees, brush and more tumbled down onto a road below and into the river.

This was the scene which greeted police rescue workers when a train was derailed during a landslide, filling the carriages with mud.
The train was pushed off the tracks as it passed Qingyuan city in southern China's Guangdong Province this morning, and into the path of a rain-triggered landslide.
Some twelve carriages were derailed, as mud poured into the train - coating the walls of the train and passengers in a thick layer of dirt and silt.

Rail authorities said that five passengers were injured in the derailment, which happened at around 5am on the T171 Nanchang-Guangzhou train.
The Guangzhou Railway Group Corporation immediately suspended service on the railway line in the aftermath of the accident, as rescue workers raced to help passengers on board.
Passengers were transferred onto other trains, while the affected carriages were taken to a nearby railway station to be cleaned up and repaired.
Services on the line were back up and running again by around midday.

Landslides destroy farmlands, houses in North Cotabato amid continuing rains
COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- A series of landslides since the weekend has destroyed up to 156 hectares of farmland and at least five houses in the town of Arakan, North Cotabato even as continuous heavy rains stoke fears of more incidents.
At least 35 families from Sitio Tinago in Barangay Napaliko, where the houses were destroyed, have sought shelter in the town center, Arakan Mayor Rene Rubino said.
The provincial government has sent relief to the evacuees while local authorities continue to monitor six other barangays known to be landslide-prone.

Extreme floods cause landslide in Brazilian city Natal days before World Cup game
WHILE the USA battled it out with Ghana in their World Cup match in the Brazilian city of Natal, just across the city landslides have destroyed roads and homes.
Two days of near non-stop rain have dumped a month’s worth of precipitation on Natal.
At least 25 homes are reported to be destroyed after flash flooding. The downpour, which began in the north-eastern Brazilian city early Friday, and abated only on Sunday, dumped as much rain in 50 hours as is usually seen during the entire month of June. There are no injuries confirmed.
Incredible drone footage has captured the extent of the devastation.
Natal’s City Hall declared a flood alert on Saturday, and evacuated dozens of residents as a precaution in the Mae Luiza neighbourhood in the city’s west. News reports showed images of residents wading through knee-deep waters as others pushed cars submerged up to the door handles. Additional reports showed a huge crater cutting across a street in a residential neighbourhood.
Floods can often be deadly in Brazil, where intense rains, chaotic urban planning and garbage-filled drainage pipes sometimes result in landslides that bury entire neighbourhoods.
Poor neighbourhoods, often built up steep hillsides, tend to be hit worst by such flooding.
The southern Brazilian regions of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul have also been hit by recent floods.

A luxury $800,000 (U.S.) Texas home perched on a lakeside bluff was poised to plunge into the water below on Wednesday after the ground under its foundation eroded and left it precariously balanced on a decaying cliff.
The house on Lake Whitney, about 120 kilometers southwest of Dallas, is perched about 23 meters in the air and being circled by a local TV news helicopter waiting to record its plunge into the water below.
A massive piece of land under the house fell into the lake on Tuesday night, neighbors told local media. Video footage shows about half of the house on the ground and half in the air, with a dangling air conditioning unit tethered to the structure.
The land started to give way in February, and since then about 50 meters of territory that separated it from the water’s edge has eroded, said Mark Wilson, the chief deputy for the Hill County Sheriff’s Department.
The owners, who use it as a second home, have abandoned the property while people are being kept away from it on land and in the lake below.
“When they built the house, it looked like a safe area, away from the bluff. There is just a lot of the bluff that gave way,” Wilson said.

Over 119,000 people affected by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka

June 06, Colombo: More than 119,000 people have been affected by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said on Friday.
At least 23 people have been killed so far and one more is missing after torrential rains lashed the island for five days causing floods and landslides, mostly in Western and Southern Provinces.
According to the DMC, 119,546 people belong to 29,209 families have been affected while 18,285 people from 4,493 families have been housed in shelters.
The government has deployed security forces and relief workers to distribute food parcels and clear the affected areas.
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) in coordination with district authorities is assessing the early recovery needs of the people affected by floods in several districts.
The SLRCS has identified providing access to safe drinking water, cleaning public places and ensuring living conditions are brought back to normalcy as most important areas to focus on.
SLRCS Branches in the affected areas are mobilizing volunteers to do the needful, the SLRCS said.
Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Kegalle, Colombo, Matara, Kurunegala and Nuwara-Eliya are the districts affected.
The Red Cross has expressed concern with regard to the possible rise of vector-borne and diarrheal disease soon after a flood situation.
The DMC expects the flood situation to get worse closer to the southern coastal areas as the rivers, which flow into the sea from these areas are rising.

National Office for Disaster Reduction director Alejandro Maldonado said a landslide set off by rain killed five members of a family over the weekend in the province of Huehuetenango.
He said the family's neighbors and rescue crews saved the family's dog after the animal was partially buried for more than 18 hours.
Several rivers have burst their banks and the drainage systems in at least four western provinces have collapsed. So far, authorities haven't reported any major flooding, Maldonado said.
The Education Department suspended classes in nine provinces for two days because of the rain coming from a weather system that became a tropical depression Monday.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system centered about 210 miles (340 kilometers) south-southeast of the coastal city of Salina Cruz, Mexico, was likely to become a tropical storm between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Mexican state of Chiapas, which neighbors Guatemala, had seen light to moderate rains for 24 hours and some landslides were cleared from roads in the state's mountainous areas, state Civil Protection spokesman Jose Aragon said. He said authorities would begin evacuating people Monday evening from coastal and low-lying areas next to rivers that are prone to flooding.
