A landslide injured 25 people and destroyed the dwellings of 100 residents of two remote communities in Pampa Hermosa, a district in the central Peruvian region of Junin, media reports said.

The landslide hit San Dionisio and Santa Viviana, located in Satipo province, destroying dozens of dwellings and covering about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of highway, El Comercio newspaper reported on its Web site.

Five villages in Satipo were cut off by the landslide, which was triggered on Tuesday by the torrential rains in the area.

The landslide affected the communities of San Dionisio, Santa Viviana, Santa Rosa, Monte Olivo and Santa Ana, Satipo Mayor Teodulo Santos Arana said.

An army helicopter is being used to search for victims and ferry supplies to residents.

Emergency management office personnel are using heavy equipment to clear roads, while the army is evacuating victims, RPP Noticias reported. EFE
