The violent rise and collapse of an underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean is captured in startling clarity for the first time.
Researchers studying the Monowai volcano, near Tonga, recorded huge changes in height in just two weeks.
The images, gathered by sonar from a research ship, shed new light on the turbulent fate of submarine mountains.
Published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the findings were made during a seabed survey last year.
Underwater wonder
Lead author Tony Watts of Oxford University told the BBC that the revelation was "a wake-up call that the sea-floor may be more dynamic than we previously thought."
"I've spent my career studying the seabed and have generally thought it pretty stable so it's stunning to see so much change in such a short space of time."
As many as 32,000 underwater mountains have been identified around the world and the majority are believed to be volcanic in origin. Several thousand of these may be active but a combination of ocean depth and remoteness means that very few have been studied.

Comment by Planet Twelve on May 15, 2012 at 11:33am No surprise there are lots of undersea mountains, and the above reported unexpectedly voluminous extrusions of lava from Monowai is obviously symptomatic of 7 of 10 plate movement. As predicted, and described in ZT posted below by Evelyn.
Agree @Evelyn, there is obvious disinfo dissemination occurring here, pushing their latest Lie. Ramp up the idea that warming is being caused by all these undersea volcanoes , as usual trying to obfuscate the truth of what is causing all this. That is, the return of the wanderer, Planet X.

SOZT: [...] What role do undersea volcanoes have in the melting of the polar ice? We have often mentioned the role of the roiling core in warming the oceans and the land so that the ground is warming from the bottom up, melting glaciers and permafrost and the poles alike. The cover-up over the presence of Planet X was of course desperate to explain all this in terms that fit in with warmer air and until recently the cover-up advocates prevented alternate explanations for the melting. If they cannot grasp at warmer air, what to do? The cover-up has thus grasped at undersea volcanism as an explanation, but this theory falters on several fronts. Where the Arctic has a plate border running directly through it, from Japan to Iceland, Antarctica sits in the middle of a plate and has no volcanism beneath the ice. Volcanism may warm the water that the wobble sloshes to and fro, but other than this has slight relationship to the melting poles. It will, however, be grasped by the desperate cover-up and loudly touted as the cause of the melting poles. EOZT

@Carrie, I don't know where your quoted number of 7,000 is coming from, but I would suggest it is highly speculative, at best. Man has little idea of what is going on down there.
Comment by Evelyn on May 15, 2012 at 9:48am Something wrong with the amount of so called "Active Volcanoes" on the ocean floor. If we have a Folding Pacific, how could any oceanographer or scientist be able to keep abreast of all the Geological changes? Not only that, how could they ever possibly be able to give exacting data on the current state of play unlike our friends the Zetas.
http://www.zetatalk.com/newsletr/issue248.htm Pacific Compression, South America is now rolling which means the Pacific is currently Compressing / Folding.
I do suspect the Active Ocean Volcanoes is to give weight to their LIES about these heating the North & South Poles.

Comment by Corey Young on May 14, 2012 at 5:58pm Amazing...And I agree with Rob, pretty scary as well. I could only bet that the scientists are thinking the same thing.
