Buoys 21401 (Kuril Islands), 43413 and 46419 in event mode - M7.9 Guerrero, Mexico

21401, 250 NM Southeast of Iturup Island now in tsunami event mode.

Iturup is the northernmost island in the southern Kuril/Chishima islands.

In 1963, the area experienced a M8.5 eq, in 2006 a M8.3 and in 2007 a M8.1.

Per Wikipedia, "The Kuril Islands form part of the island arc formed above the subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate is being subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate. This convergent boundary has been the site of many large megathrust earthquakes."

March 20, 2012 — A major earthquake has hit Oaxaca, Mexico.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca, Mexico, about 200 km east of Acapulco.

The quake was originally thought to be a 7.9 but has since been downgraded. It struck the area at 18:02 GMT.

Current activity and from 25 Feb to present AND a Google Earth screen shot of the buoy's location on a plate boundary.  The yellow dots represent EQs in the past week.

While the buoy has been in near continuous tsunami event mode since 25 February, we have not seen activity like this...

"..National Data Buoy Center You are correct, it is instrument problems. The pressure sensor used on those systems is particularly sensitive to pick up the millimeter changes in the water column height. When this problem frequently occurs on the tsunami system, it is usually due to some sort of noise being introduced into the system..."
