Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Mt Sinabung Eruptions Intensify, Over 26,000 Evacuated (Jan 14)

Sumatra's Sinabung volcano erupted more than 30 times on Tuesday spewing lava and ash clouds over a wider area than before, forcing now more than 26,000 people to flee their homes.

The eruption produced the largest pyroclastic flows to date, reaching more than 5-6 km in length, with ash plumes rising to approximately 25,000 ft (8 km) altitude and over a 4.5 km radius.

Enormous clouds rose from the mountain, as thick layers of grey ash blanketed plantations and nearby houses.

Hot lava, which has been spewing from the volcano for the past two weeks, has flowed into a river and filled up valleys with pyroclastic material.

With the volcano erupting regularly, many of those who have left their homes since Sinabung started erupting in September have fallen ill, a local government official said.

"Some refugees are sick, coughing mainly, and they are also in need of clean water," Robert Peranginangin,a spokesman for Karo district.

Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala: Conred´s Orange Alert declared

A strong increase in activity began last night at the volcano. Accompanied by steeply rising tremor, the so-far mild strombolian activity picked up to become intense enough to produce pulsating lava fountains that eject glowing material to several hundred meters height and is visible from tens of kilometers distance (e.g. the Pacific coast at 50 km to the west).

Lava flowing down the flanks of Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano prompted the evacuation of people threatened by the eruption.

The country’s National Disaster Reduction Commission said residents of Villa Canales, El Chupadero and Pacaya were relocated to San Vicente Pacaya, a town at a safer distance from Pacaya, one of the country’s most active volcanoes.

Lava flows were said to be nearly 2,000 feet wide and 2 miles long just south of Guatemala City.

As a response, CONRED has closed access to the park and civil aviation authority has limited the number of flights in and out of Guatemala airport because of the presence of ash plumes.

Sinabung Volcano Erupts 24 Times, 25,000 Evacuated (Jan 10)
Mt Sinabung erupted 24 times on Friday - 220 times in the past week - shooting a column of ash about 4,000 meters into the sky and forcing further evacuations, official said.

Powerful burst of ash spread from the crater of rumbling the volcano, located in Karo district, and the hot ash slid off to the southeast, scaling up the number of people fleeing the eruption to 24,949 on Friday from 22,708 just days before, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency.

"It is expected that the volcano is going to persist eruption in days to come," he told Xinhua over phone.

Evacuation zone has been declared at 7 km from the crater of the volcano, Sutopo said, adding the authorities will proceed to send emergency relief aids to affected-areas.

A national emergency hasn't yet been declared, but the government is prepared for the "worst case scenario."

Mt. Sinabung Erupts 77 Times in 24 Hours, Danger Zone Grows (Jan 5)
Authorities extended a danger zone around a rumbling volcano in western Indonesia on Sunday after it spewed blistering gas farther than expected, sending panicked residents streaming down the sides of the mountain.

Mount Sinabung’s booming explosion just after midnight triggered a panicked evacuation. Men with ash-covered faces streamed down the scorched slopes on motorcycles, followed by truckloads of women and children, many crying. Officials barked out orders on bullhorns as rocks and debris rained from the sky.

The volcano erupted at least 77 times over the weekend, sending lava and searing gas tumbling down the southeastern slopes up to five kilometres (three miles) away.

The volcano was still spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) in several eruptions Sunday.

Mr. Nugroho, the disaster agency spokesman, said the evacuation zone, which has stood at a five-kilometer radius around the volcano's peak, has been extended to seven kilometers in the southeast, where volcanic activity is greatest. Residents of more than two dozen villages have been living in temporary shelters outside that zone, some for months. Many of their homes are caked with ash and their small farms left unattended.

If the no-go zone were the increase to 10 kilometers, the number of displaced persons would reach nearly 60,000, Mr. Nugroho said. The disaster agency cannot predict the mountain's activity but has extended a period of extra caution to Jan. 18, he said.

Soldiers joined the rescue operation in two villages of Jewara and Pintu Besi, about seven kilometres (four miles) from the crater, where homes and farms were caked in grey dust.

More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from villages around the crater into several temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.

“We were tired here … we’ve lost everything. We wonder about our lives after this disaster,” said Anton Sitepu, a father of four who is among the villagers in a cramped shelter in Telagah village.

Threat level for Aleutians volcano raised again (Jan 2)

— Scientists have increased the threat level of Alaska's Cleveland Volcano from yellow to orange.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory says the volcano appears to have kicked up to an elevated unrest. In the past six days, three brief explosions from Cleveland Volcano were detected.

The color designation indicates that sudden explosions could send ash above 20,000 feet, threatening international air carriers.

Sumatra's Mount Sinabung Erupts 9 Times, 19,000 Forced To Evacuate (Dec 31)
Mt Sinabung let out a new, powerful burst Tuesday, prompting warnings for airplanes and triggering panic among villagers.

Nine eruptions Tuesday sent lava and searing gas tumbling out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province, The volcano started spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the air late Monday, but no casualties were reported.

More than 19,000 people have been evacuated from villages in a danger zone 5 kilometers (3 miles) around the crater to temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.

Gray ash covered villages, farms and trees as far as 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of the mountain.

The 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) Mount Sinabung has caught scientists off guard because the volcano had been quiet for four centuries.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said airlines had been notified to avoid routes near the mountain.

Authorities in El Salvador have started to evacuate the municipality of San Miguel after the Chaparrastique volcano erupted on Sunday, shooting a giant ash cloud into the sky.

The government has issued a yellow alert and is expected to evacuate families within 3 kilometers (approximately 2 miles) of the volcano to emergency shelters. More than 5,000 people live near the volcano according to civil protection officials.

Civil defence director Jorge Melendez said: "We have implemented emergency measures to evacuate villages located within 3 kilometres of the volcano."

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, although two people are being treated for respiratory problems.

Health authorities recommend breathing through moist handkerchiefs and avoid drinking water from local sources.

The eruption began at 10:30 am local time on Sunday morning and shot a column of gas and ash 5 kilometres (approximately 3 miles) high into the sky, according to El Salvador's ministry of environment and natural resources.

The government is monitoring the situation and searching for traces of fresh lava.

President Mauricio Funes said in a television address: "We are not certain there will be new eruptions, but we can't rule out that possibility either."

The Chaparrastique volcano, which is about 140 kilometres (86 miles) to the east of the capital, last erupted in 1976.

The volcano, which is about 86 miles to the east of the capital, spewed ash over a wide area and the smell of sulfur hung over surrounding towns, according to reports on social media. Authorities recommended breathing through moist handkerchiefs.

Santos Osorio, a member of a local coffee growers union, said heavy ash was falling in the area and local coffee plantations would be checked for damage.

El Salvador's crop has already been blighted by an outbreak of leaf rust that has reduced output in all five of Central America's coffee producers.

El Salvador has 23 active volcanoes and the Chaparrastique volcano is considered one of the most active, with 26 eruptions in the last 500 years, the environment ministry said. In a 1976 eruption, lava gushed from the volcano and it shook violently in another event in 2010.
