WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

The bridge was restricted to 9-ton axles and 21 tons gross vehicle weight. While Walcker was crossing the bridge, the decking gave out and collapsed.

China News Service, October 4th. According to the European Network of Italy, citing EUN News Agency, on October 3, local time, due to severe weather and rapid river water surges, a bridge on the SS45 National Road in the province of Piacenza in northern Italy was out of repair due to age , Suddenly collapsed under the impact of the swelling river, fortunately no casualties were caused.

At present, the Piacenza City Procuratorate and relevant authorities have been involved in the investigation.

According to reports, at around 3:30 pm local time on the 3rd, Corte Brugnatella, Piacenza Province (Corte Brugnatella) SS45 national highway connected Marsaglia and Ottone , The Lenzino Bridge on the upper reaches of the Fiume Trebbia suddenly collapsed.

Fortunately, there were no passing vehicles on the bridge at that time.

Some local witnesses said that less than a minute before the collapse of the Renzino Bridge, a couple had just drove across the bridge.

Before rescuers arrived, residents on both sides of the river quickly set up road barriers to prevent vehicles from driving onto the bridge.

When the bridge collapsed, it was extremely rare that there were no passing vehicles on the bridge, otherwise the consequences would be disastrous.

After the collapse of the Renzino Bridge, local government officials, prosecutors, civil defense departments, road management companies, fire police, and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene of the accident to organize rescue and understand the situation.

The investigation confirmed that the accident caused no casualties.

Corte Brunateira Mayor Mauro Guarnieri (Mauro Guarnieri) said that the Renzino Bridge is a historic bridge, and the road management company inspects and repairs the bridge every year.

The last safety check was 5 months ago.

The technicians believed that the bridge complied with safety standards, but five months later, the bridge suddenly collapsed.

Guarneri emphasized that the Renzino Bridge usually has thousands of vehicles passing on weekends and is an important land transportation lifeline in the region.

The collapse of the bridge has not only severely affected the travel of tens of thousands of local people, but also the circulation of people and materials on both sides of the Trebbia River will need to detour more than 70 kilometers in the future, which will seriously affect the local economic development.

It is hoped that the relevant authorities will rebuild the Renzino Bridge as soon as possible and resume cross-strait traffic.

British-era bridge in Shivamogga partially collapses after cracks develop

Commuters from Shivamogga, Davangere and Chitradurga travel via the bridge to reach the coastal Udupi district.

 SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 - 10:59

A bridge partially collapsed at Ranjadakatte near Thirthahalli in Shivamogga on Thursday. Traffic was disrupted between Shivamogga and Udupi after cracks developed on Thursday, which then led to the partial collapse. By the time it collapsed, district officials cordoned off the bridge and stopped vehicular movement.

Heavy rainfall in the region led to cracks developing on the bridge. Commuters from Shivamogga, Davangere and Chitradurga travel via the bridge to reach the coastal Udupi district. It is one of the routes connecting Shivamogga and Udupi with other routes, including those via Masthikatte and Agumbe.

"This was one of the main routes linking Shivamogga and Udupi and it was frequented by a large number of commuters every day. The route is now closed and the public works department is carrying out repair work there," said Prakash, an official in the Shivamogga DC office, had told TNM earlier.

The bridge built in the British era was closed down on Thursday. There is another new bridge being built alongside the old bridge.

In particular, the route is frequented by people travelling for medical emergencies from central Karnataka to hospitals like Kasturba Hospital Manipal for treatment.

A police official from the Thirthahalli police station told TNM earlier that cracks had been seen along and underneath the bridge. “It was damaged due to the heavy rains in Shivamogga over the past week," the official told TNM

The development comes a week after floods were reported in neighboring Udupi district after it received a heavy spell of rainfall on Sunday morning

Agra-Gurugram bridge caves in near Badoli

Not in use for 2 years; new one under construction

Faridabad, September 21

A bridge built in 1960 on the Gurugram and Agra canals passing near the Badoli village in the city collapsed today. As it was not being used, the incident did not result in any injury or damage.

Maintained by the irrigation departments of Haryana and UP, the 10-foot-wide bridge made of bricks was the main connecting point between Badoli and adjacent villages in eastern (Neharpar) area till about two years ago. Though it was officially closed around two years ago, pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders had been using it often.

“We completely stopped any movement on the bridge this morning as we noticed signs of collapse,” said an employee of the contractor engaged in construction of an alternative bridge adjacent to it.

He said as barricades had been put to halt the movement, the bridge collapsed around 11.30 am with no loss of life or property.

Virender Rawat, Executive Engineer, Irrigation Department, said: “As the department took up the construction of a new double-lane bridge in 2018, the old one had been closed for all.”

Claiming that the part of the new bridge on the Gurugram canal had already been constructed, he said the UP Government was still working on the remaining portion on the Agra canal flowing parallel and adjacent to the Gurugram canal.

“The piling work done near the bridge perhaps led to its collapse,” he said, adding that it had to be removed any way as it was not being used.
